WEEK IN REVIEW Residents weigh in on Fisk apartment plan

kfinlon@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Preliminary plans by a developer to renovate the long-vacant former St. Mary’s hospital on Fisk Avenue into a 32-unit apartment building received positive feedback last week from DeKalb residents.

Early feedback related to the plans to build one- and two-bedroom apartments inside the existing 145 Fisk Ave., vacant for 30 years, included questions on housing need, capacity and how it would fit into the neighborhood. Developer Jon Sauser was on hand during the April 4 City of DeKalb Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to address questions related to his plan.

Commissioners did not vote on any formal plans, but offered a first-round, largely supportive look at the proposal.

Sauser said the idea is to maintain the character of the neighborhood and to bring life back into the building, built in 1922, which sits near the corner of Fisk Avenue and First Street neighboring homes and other rental units.

“The goal is the keep it quiet ... and in line with the neighborhood,” Sauser said.

Longtime DeKalb resident Clifford Cleland, who lives in the 500 block of South Second Street, said he’s in favor of the proposed project. He posed several questions to Sauser, however, including whether the city had a large enough market for the type of apartments Sauser was proposing.

It’s an inquiry that’s come up before in relation to apartment housing projects in DeKalb. In January, another prominent DeKalb developer, Pappas Development, won city approval to begin building a $6 million, 61-unit apartment complex at

1381 Barber Greene Road near the corner of Sycamore Road.

In response, Sauser and DeKalb city staff confirmed one-bedroom apartment projects like ones from Pappas Development are fully occupied.

The four-story, 24,000-square-foot property sits on about 1.3 acres blocks from downtown DeKalb. According to city documents, the proposal was put forth by Sauser for the building, which was most recently used by DeKalb School District 428 until 1992, and has sat vacant since.

Under Sauser’s Fisk Avenue proposal, the development would renovate the existing building and construct 23 one-bedroom units about 650 square feet in size, and nine two-bedroom units that will be about 900 square feet. The leases would be at “market rate,” according to project plans.

County home expansion still unfinished

And if officials decide to move forward with the expansion, which first went out to bid in 2018, it could cost a facility already struggling with dwindling resident numbers and cost increases thousands more to complete.

mission on April 5 that there is additional work to be done on the expansion, including more painting and flooring plans.

In August 2020, the county sold $13 million in bonds for the nursing home’s expansion project, said DeKalb County Administrator Brian Gregory, who joined county government in mid-2021. Gregory said a 30-year repayment plan was outlined for the county to pay back the bonds from its operating revenues.

“So between now and 2030 with interest, it ends up being about $16.26 million,” Gregory said.

Gregory said the county recently tried to put some finishing touches for the expansion out for bid on a $90,000 line of

credit. However, county officials decided against pursuing the $330,000 bid they got back.

The expansion included additional rooms, an activity center, an upgraded fire alarm system, a nursing call system, a larger chiller and a new boiler system. A 15,400-square-foot transitional care unit added 18 rooms to the 83,000-square-foot facility, which is 22 years old, and the project included renovating 13 rooms in existing wings.

County officials now have to decide whether pursuing more construction work on the expansion is worth the money, especially as financial constraints continue to plague the facility.

DeKalb Corn Fest ’22 band lineup announced Shaw Local News Network DeKALB – Corn Fest has its 2022 band lineup raring to go, according to a recent announcement by event organizers.

Corn Fest will be held Aug. 26 to 28 in downtown DeKalb. Corn Fest is one of the last remaining free music festivals among Illinois music festivals and summer festivals and the biggest downtown event of the summer.

This year, headliners on Saturday night will be The Voices of Classic Rock, which features the former lead singers of Chicago, Boston and Asia.

Attending Corn Fest and concerts is free, but tickets are required to enter into the beer garden and sound stage area that is in front of the stage. A weekend pass to the sound stage costs $25 and a daily pass costs $10. Passes can be bought online on the DeKalb Corn Fest website.

On Friday, Aug. 26, Six Pack will perform from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Renegade Wildflower from 7 to 8 p.m., and 7th Heaven from 9 to 11 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 27, the lineup includes Austin Hopkins, a solo acoustic act, from noon to 1 p.m.; Mary & Brian, an acoustic act, from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.; Rockin’ Moxie from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; American English from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; Hi Infidelity from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; and The Voices of Classic Rock from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com DeKALB – Randy Caspersen doesn’t describe himself as religious, but every time he visits the garden behind Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore, he becomes inspired spiritually.

Caspersen said the garden and monarch waystation is “a peaceful place of respite, contemplation and relaxation for all of us.”

Caspersen is an assistant professor of media studies at Northern Illinois University. He filmed the documentary “Plants, Pollinators & Prayers” at the church’s garden during 53 visits over several years.

Caspersen is the director, producer and editor of the documentary, and he was assisted by graduate students from NIU’s Department of Communication.

The documentary was inspired by the decline of monarch butterflies in the Midwestern prairie, and follows a gardener, educator and pastor as they transform the rural church’s backyard into a sanctuary for pollinating animals, an educational garden for the community and a sacred space for spiritual contemplation.

There will be a free screening of “Plants, Pollinators & Prayers” at 6:30

during the past two years of the pandemic, this will be the first in-person screening of the documentary.

Caspersen spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about the documentary and upcoming screening.

Milton: What is your role with the documentary?

Caspersen: I am the director, producer and editor of “Plants, Pollinators & Prayers.” It is an environmental documentary film. It is a short documentary, 40 minutes long. … I filmed over 50 times over multiple years, from 2015 to 2019. Three NIU graduate students helped me film with drone footage, interviewing subjects and capturing extra event footage.

Milton: What was your inspiration for the documentary?

Caspersen: My inspiration began after a Friday night open house in 2015. I was told about the garden and was invited to see the land and planting. I spent all summer visiting and capturing footage. I saw how the garden grew, and I was inspired to tell the story of the struggle to plant a large garden and of the importance of insects, of butterflies and bees.

Milton: Tell me more about the garden.

Caspersen: The garden is located behind the Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore. I do not follow any religion and I’m not Christian, I’m agnostic, but I believe in the overall spiritual mission of the garden.

The garden began as a small area of land behind the church’s parsonage, which is the house where the pastor lives.

Milton: How did the garden get started?

Caspersen: Gardener Diana Swanson and [University of Illinois Extension] environmental educator Peggy Doty are members of the church, and they made it their mission to create the garden and make it a welcoming space for insects and all people. Then the church’s pastor got on board with that mission to make the project part of the church’s service to the community. The garden design was to plant native plants in order to attract monarch butterflies, birds, bees and other pollinating animals. The garden is also meant to be a peaceful place of respite, contemplation and relaxation for all of us.

Milton: How did the documentary process begin?

Caspersen: I began to film the process of them transforming a patch of grass next to a cornfield into a beautiful garden. The film follows that process. They first had to kill grass to form the garden’s spiral design, it follows them designing the garden, the planting and the weeding, while the church members and community members increasingly join in the process of this land transformation.

Milton: Why did you decide to make a documentary?

Caspersen: I thought the creation of a butterfly waystation was a cool story that was happening locally, and I wanted to be a part of it, similar to how I got involved and filmed the documentary “Go! Penguins,” which came out in 2017. That documentary follows [Children’s Community Theatre’s] Penguin Project and their theater productions over multiple years. How I get involved and become part of what’s happening in the community is by using my camera. My filmmaking is how I get to share stories, like the compelling stories happening around the northern Illinois area, with the world.

DeKALB – The next Northern Illinois University STEM Café will feature a panel of NIU experts who will discuss recent labor shortages.

The event will be held online at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. The public is invited.

The panel will include Kathryn Cady, associate professor of communication and faculty associate in the NIU Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality; Mahesh Subramony, management professor; Michael Oswalt, associate professor in the NIU College of Law; and Carl Campbell III, chair of the economics department.

The program will explore the current labor shortage through legal, gender, economic and management perspectives. The panel will discuss why there is a labor shortage now and how the nature of work changes during turbulent times.

Northern Illinois University STEM Cafés are part of NIU STEAM and are designed to help increase public awareness of the critical role that STEM fields

play in everyday lives.

DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre to host comedian Drew Lynch DeKALB – The Egyptian Theatre will welcome stand-up comedian Drew Lynch to the stage at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.

Friends work to create a more eco-friendly DeKalb

eKALB – At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marc Montgomery was looking for a fun and creative way to spend time with his daughter Harper.

Together, they built birdhouses and fairy gardens to help pass the time.

“It all started as a way to spend time with my 6-year-old daughter Harper, who is 7 now,” Montgomery said. “I used to build houses, so I thought teaching her how to build birdhouses and fairy gardens would be fun and educational while she was home during e-learning. She’s even taken what she learned and taught an online workshop for her Girl Scout troop.”

Inspired by his creations with his daughter, Montgomery decided to start a business called The Driven Heart with his longtime friend Devin Costa Rica. The two make and sell custom eco-friendly habitats for birds and bats, fairy gardens and winged and mystical crafts and objects. The birdhouses are for nesting birds, including bluebirds, woodpeckers, wrens, nuthatches, warblers and titmice. They also sell bird feeders for migratory birds such as orioles.

Montgomery and Costa Rica also are replacing and donating bluebird houses, two bat houses and a wood duck house along the Kishwaukee River Trail in DeKalb. They have made about 25 bluebird habitats so far in the hopes of repopulating the species in the area. They will make a total of 40 bluebird habitats: 20 new and 20 restored.

In all of their creations, Montgomery and Costa Rica use materials that would otherwise go into a landfill.

“We’ve used cedar fence pickets, old reclaimed barn wood, cigar boxes, tables, pallets and telephone poles,” Montgomery said. “We also use scrap wood from Lowes and Menards.”

Costa Rica said making the bird habitats are his way of helping the environment.

“We have to take care of nature,” Costa Rica said. “We keep building and building and there are more and more people and less and less nature.

We have to do what we can to preserve nature and wildlife.”

Marc Montomery and Devin Costa Rica will make, install and donate 40 bluebird habitats, two bat houses and a wood duck house along the Kishwaukee River Trail.

Montgomery and Costa Rica are also organizing a collection and donation drive called “Wheels Go Round,” which they plan to host with North-

ern Illinois University Outdoor Adventures and DeKalb Township.

Wheels Go Round is seeking donations of bicycles, roller skates, inline skates, skateboards, scooters and helmets. Montgomery and Costa Rica will perform mild repairs on the items and get them into safe and usable condition. The project’s goal is to provide 100 donated items to children in the community before the last day of the school year; 32 bicycles already have been collected.

Montgomery and community volunteers plan to host workshops throughout the summer where residents can have their items repaired free of charge. During the workshops, basic maintenance and tool skills will be taught as well.

“It’s hopefully a way to curb bike theft throughout town and find new homes for bikes and other items that

are just sitting around and are not being used,” Montgomery said. “It’s for every child in the community.

We’re looking for donations and children interested in receiving the items. … I, as well as many others, feel that it gives people a sense of pride in ownership, and teaching others how to maintain and upkeep their belongings, if nothing else.”

Montgomery said The Driven Heart and the project goal of Wheels Go Round is to “help kids and the community reconnect and enjoy nature again.”

“DeKalb County has an awesome trail system, and there’s plenty to see and do outdoors,” Montgomery said.

“We just want people to get outside and spend time in nature.”

The Northern Illinois University Art Museum is holding a silent auction of some of its artwork to help raise funds to buy pieces from the Brandywine Print Workshop, a diversity-driven printmaking studio selling underrepresented artists’ work.

NIU Art Museum hosts silent auction of work Shaw Local News Network DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Art Museum is holding a silent benefit auction of small art pieces during regular gallery hours until May 6.

The auction will help raise funds to buy artwork from the Brandywine Print Workshop, a diversity-driven printmaking studio selling underrepresented artists’ work, according to a news release. The intention of the auction is to reflect the changing demographics of the university and region more accurately with the artwork.

Artwork up for bidding includes photographs, paintings, sculpture and prints by contemporary local artists including Jay Ryan and David Driesbach, as well as historical master draftspersons such as Honoré Daumier and Françisco Goya.

In support of diversification of the collection, several artists from the NIU School of Art and Design faculty and teaching staff, staff of the NIU Art Museum and anonymous members of the Friends of the NIU Art Museum have donated pieces of their own artwork or from their personal collections to auction.

Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The NIU Art Museum is located in Altgeld Hall, 595 College Ave. in DeKalb.

A certificate of service has been awarded to the District No. 103 School at DeKalb for the contribution from the teacher and pupils of the school, toward saving the lives of thousands of helpless orphan children in the Near East.

Material for the high school addition is arriving daily and during this week, many of the stone pieces have arrived. This material comes shipped in gondolas and the transfer men have considerable trouble in unloading the heavy stone from the cars onto the wagons. The work carries a certain risk, as the large stones are apt to slip. The unloading takes considerable time and the transfer men are hoping the next consignment will come in any kind of car than that used for coal.

The two corner lots in Cortland known as the William Dee property on East Main Street across from the Post Office was purchased by H. E. Myers. The owner has begun hauling material for a garage and will start the building at once. Carl O’Neil will take charge of the automobile repairing.

Train No. 20, of the North Western, stopping here at 2:26 in the afternoon, was derailed yesterday at Watkins, Iowa, due to a broken rail. Several Chicagoans were on the train at the time of the accident and some were injured, although none seriously. No. 26 is one of the all steel crack trains of the North Western system.

Garden plowing seems to be a popular pastime in DeKalb right at this time and many people are getting the old hoe and spading fork at work. The ground seems to be heavy in some places due to the heavy rains but with a few more sunshiny days like today, it will be in good condition to work.

Joe Wingert, 15 years old, of Chicago, wanted in Maywood for burglarizing a store there, was taken to the Aurora police station Saturday night by Special Agent O. H. Abbott of the Burlington railroad, charged with trying to wreck one of the “Q’s” crack passenger trains. The lad had piled three heavy ties on the tracks about two miles west of Somonauk, but they were discovered in time to prevent any damage.

1947 – 75 YEARS AGO

Construction of the new bridge across the Kishwaukee River on West Lincoln Highway has been slowed by the recent heavy rains and consequent high water in the river. Considerable excavation remains to be done before the new piers can be erected and the water has covered much of the space which has to be dug up. The old stone piers must be removed before the piers for the new bridge can be placed.

The auto of Elmer Strack of 1105 Somonauk St., which was reported stolen on April 9 has been recovered on Perry Peterson’s farm about seven miles southeast of Sycamore. The auto was badly damaged.

dows, dashboard and other parts of the vehicle. When found, the automobile, a 1946 Ford Tudor, had gone through four fences. The police are working on clues found at the scene of the crime.

The City of Genoa will go on daylight saving time, starting Sunday, April 27. The city council voted the okay on the change of time at the meeting held last Friday. The vote was three to two in favor of adopting the measure.

Arthur Byro and Robert Arndt, both of Malta, are among the 75 Future Farmers in Illinois chosen to play in the Illinois State Future Farmers band. The young men are members of the Malta chapter of Future Farmers of America and were chosen from among many nominated as being outstanding performers. Both play clarinets.

Bob Collins of Somonauk feels his lucky star was with him Saturday night when he returned home from work. He regrets the damage to his recently purchased auto, but is thankful to be alive. As he pulled onto the tracks, a Santa Fe train, re-routed from the Joliet tracks due to the high water, struck the auto front, taking radiator, lights and pumper from the car, but not otherwise damaging car or occupant. The crew stopped the train as soon as possible, coming back expecting anything but what they did find, a perfectly well man, too dazed to move out of the seat of the car.

The two pandas sent from China as gifts to President Nixon, will keep cool in the Washington, D.C., zoo where they have taken up residence. Ronald Smith, who owns and operates an air conditioning company in the nation’s capital, has got the contract to air condition the two bear-like animals’ cage. Pandas are adapted to the cold temperatures of northern China. Smith is the son of Mrs. Laura Smith, New York, a native of Maple Park.

The long talked about Kishwaukee River Parkway, which has been discussed by city, park district, school and civic groups for years, is about to become a reality as the DeKalb-Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club has adopted it as a major project. The club has announced the formation of a committee to spearhead the project which will provide for a walkway, horse path and bike trail running parallel to the Kishwaukee River from Lions Park at the southern edge of DeKalb to the Buena Vista golf course up north.

Police are crediting the quick action of a Sycamore resident with possibly saving the life of a 3-year-old who had wandered away from his home yesterday morning. Bob McMillan, an employee of Illini Security Systems, was just heading to an assignment shortly after 9 a.m. when he saw a small child attempting to cross DeKalb Avenue, near Fair Street, as rush hour traffic sped by from both directions.

Upstaging named Sycamore Business of the Year

SYCAMORE – John Huddleston and Upstaging Inc.’s nearly 500 employees are usually behind the scenes, but on April 7, the business was front and center.

Upstaging Inc. was named the 2021 Outstanding Business of the Year during the 105th annual meeting of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce. The meeting, which recognized and awarded outstanding businesses, was held during a luncheon at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall in Sycamore.

Upstaging Inc., which is celebrating its 50th year in business, provides event production, creative structured solutions, signage and graphics, custom displays, corporate events and concert tours for artists including Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam and Paul McCartney.

During the height of the pandemic in recent years, Upstaging pivoted its business operations to help in emergency relief efforts. Upstaging began to make personal protective equipment, including face shields, plastic room dividers, counter shields and desk shields.

Huddleston said that Upstaging has 130 employees at its Sycamore location every day and about 400 more out in the field as technicians and drivers.

Upstaging does stage lighting, special effects and scenery for large productions, concerts and events, including 2022’s Wrestlemania. The company also transports all required equipment and gear for the shows.

“I’d also like to thank the community for their outpouring of support on social media,” Huddleston said. “It was really very positive. It helped open doors to us selling our products nationwide.”

RoseMarie Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, described the meeting as a way to recognize outstanding businesses in the community. The event also celebrated the chamber’s successes. In 2021, 110 businesses joined the Sycamore Chamber and 91% of its members renewed memberships.

“I want to let others know how proud I am of this community,” Treml said.

“We came together and helped each other get through two very difficult years in the midst of the pandemic.”

Communities by Grainger received the Community Diamond Award, which recognizes a chamber member that has made significant improvement or development to their business or enhancement to the community. Communities by Grainger has built more than 400 homes in DeKalb County. Three recent communities in Sycamore designed and developed by Communities by Grainger include Somerset Farms, Hickory Terrace and Old Mill Park, which are all for people age 55 and older.

Brian Grainger said he was honored to accept the award on behalf of his business.

“It is due to years of hard work by everyone involved, hundreds and hundreds of people that brought the communities to fruition,” Grainger said. “So in a sense, it is an award for everyone.”

Swedberg Electric received the Chamber Champion Award, which recognizes a chamber member that has demonstrated outstanding partnership with the chamber and contributes to the community. Swedberg Electric has played a role in the suc-

cess of the chamber’s two largest and longest-running community events: the Sycamore Pumpkin 10K Run and the holiday tree-lighting in preparation for Santa’s arrival on the DeKalb County Courthouse lawn.

Jim Swedberg expressed gratitude while accepting the award.

OLT Marketing Inc. received the Spirit of Small Business Award, which recognizes a chamber member small business that shows community spirit and pride in Sycamore.

Jim Doherty, owner of OLT Marketing, said he was humbled and excited for his business to receive the award. OLT Marketing provides apparel and promotional items to companies and nonprofit organizations. He said he had his sights set on the award since he attended his first chamber annual meeting eight years ago.

“The letters ‘OLT’ refer to something my dad said about giving people ‘One less thing to worry about’,” Doherty said. “We’re happy to be a small part of so many people’s lives, their businesses, organizations and events. It means a lot to receive the award and be recognized for all that we do.”

In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

DeKalb firm doubles Paint-A-Plug incentive Shaw Local News Network DeKALB – A DeKalb business is doubling an incentive for community members who want to help beautify the city by taking part in the Paint-APlug program.

The DeKalb Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission recently announced another year of the PaintA-Plug initiative, where the community is encouraged to adopt a fire hydrant and turn it into a work of art.

There is no specific theme for the fire hydrants, but artists are encouraged to incorporate elements of the community or their neighborhood into their art. Previous creations have included an ear of corn, a Northern Illinois University Huskie and a pharaoh across from the Egyptian Theatre.

While no fee is required to participate in the Paint-A-Plug program, approved artists are responsible for providing their own materials for painting, and that’s where OC Creative comes in.

OC Creative has pledged to donate $100 to this year’s Paint-A-Plug artists to help defray some of the cost of materials.

“For the first 25 people who finish a Paint-A-Plug this year, improving their neighborhoods and expanding the art scene of our community, we would be delighted to provide a stipend to each one,” OC Creative President and Creative Director Brian Oster said in a news release.

A $50 incentive was offered by the business last year. That supported several projects including a design dedicated to Northwestern Medicine nurses and two by the Basics DeKalb

DeKALB – Bob Myers of DeKalb has heard plenty of loud noises during his time in military service.

On April 3, Myers heard what he describes as the loudest sound in his life, a sound that even jet plane engines couldn’t compare with: a crowd of 19,869 people screaming, cheering and clapping for him.

Myers was recognized for his military service while on the ice at the United Center in Chicago before the national anthem at a Chicago Blackhawks hockey game. The Blackhawks played the Arizona Coyotes, losing, 3-2, in overtime.

Myers first contacted the United Service Organizations five or six years ago after watching a Blackhawks game on TV. “I thought it was nice how they saluted veterans at the beginning of the game, so I reached out to the Illinois USO,” Myers said. “I filled out an application and forgot about it.”

About a month and a half ago, Myers received an email from the USO, asking if he still was interested in being recognized for his military service during a game. As part of his recognition, he received two free tickets to the game and free VIP parking.

Myers was born in Sycamore and raised in DeKalb. When he graduated from DeKalb High School in 1976 at age 16, he was the youngest student to graduate from the school. He needed his parents’ permission to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in October 1976, because he was only 17 years old.

Myers served in the Air Force from 1976 to 1988.

He served four years as an aircraft weapons technician and eight years as a weapons systems operator.

While serving as a weapon systems operator, a position commonly called “Wizzo,” Myers was on a rapid deployment force, capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 24 hours. As a “Wizzo,” Myers launched missiles, dropped bombs and helped with

plane navigation and communication. The group of planes he flew with was nicknamed “The Wolf Pack.”

Myers, who has been interested in aerial photography since his military service, is an FAA-certified drone operator and takes photographs with his drone professionally.

Myers and another veteran were brought onto the ice and recognized for their military service before the national anthem. Halfway through the game, they were recognized again during the Boeing Military Salute. The two veterans appeared on the jumbotron and on TV. “It takes a lot to impress me, and that did it,” Myers said. “It was amazing. Everyone was turned toward me. They were all cheering and clapping.”

Myers’ wife, Sue Breese, also attended the Blackhawks game. She said that seeing her husband being recognized by so many people was “heartwarming and inspiring.”

“It meant so much to him,” Breese said. “It was a happy, emotional evening.”

Myers credits the Illinois USO and the Blackhawks for giving him what he describes as “an experience of a lifetime.” He also is grateful to Jim Cornelison for his gift of a commemorative coin.

Cornelison is the professional singer who sings “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “O Canada” at the beginning of Blackhawks home games.

“The entire experience was pretty cool,” Myers said. “I’ve watched plenty of games on TV, but I think that this definitely beats those. It made me feel really good. It is always nice for veterans to be appreciated for our service.”

DeKalb dad to raise $5K, plans to skateboard from Somonauk to Genoa

DeKALB – Ron Adamson of DeKalb is on a mission to raise $5,000 and show the community that a skateboard is a viable – and fun – mode of transportation by riding 40 miles across DeKalb County.

Adamson, founder and president of Pushing Together NFP, is raising $5,000 for the nonprofit organization. Founded in summer 2020, the organization provides high-quality gear, including skateboards and helmets, to youth in the area interested in skateboarding. “[Pushing Together NFP’s] goal is to provide gear for all young people who want to take part in skateboarding and to provide a supportive and encouraging community,” Adamson said.

The DeKalb dad also volunteers as a skateboarding teacher every Saturday at Fargo Skateboarding in downtown DeKalb.

Adamson is raising $5,000 now through Thursday, May 5, which is Give DeKalb County, a 24-hour day of giving. For every $125 raised, Adamson will skateboard 1 mile.

He said he was inspired to create an organization to help DeKalb area youth fulfill their skateboarding passions because of the number of families in the area who struggle financially and might not be able to afford gear.

“They are left unfulfilled and unenriched,” he said. “We should support and encourage them if that is what they’re interested in.”

On May 7, Adamson will skateboard from downtown Somonauk to downtown Genoa, about 40 miles in total.

“Skateboarding is a viable, affordable source of transportation,” Adamson said. “You can go 3 or 4 miles per hour walking and can double or triple that number easily when skateboarding. It’s a fun form of exercise. You can go anywhere.”

The money raised will be used to purchase skateboarding gear for children. Pushing Together NFP also will launch a filming program this summer and will provide children with fisheye lenses for the program.

Art groups collaborate for exhibits in businesses

DeKALB – OC Creative and the Kishwaukee Valley Art League are collaborating on a new series of art exhibits that will be on display at local businesses and public spaces throughout DeKalb County.

KVAL’s Occupational Creativity Project, also known as the KVAL OC Project, will allow area businesses to display work by local artists in their space.

Every three months, the art will be swapped out for fresh pieces, creating seasonal interest year-round.

The KVAL OC Project began April 1. Artwork will be on display until the next quarter begins July 1.

The league’s president, Alec Rossiter, said the group has collaborated with OC Creative in the past.

The branding company created KVAL’s logo, brochure and gallery signage.

“The project was Brian Oster’s idea,” Rossiter said. “The project will start as a rotating art exhibit in their office building, and we’re planning on expanding to other businesses and organizations as well.”

Rossiter said there are more than 130 artists involved in KVAL. “This will allow our artists to have their art on display and exhibited around the community,” Rossiter said. “It will be a way for local artists’ artwork to be seen by everyone.”

For a donation of $100 per quarter to the art league, a business will receive four to six pieces of art to display. SYCAMORE – The Voluntary Action Center senior congregate luncheon sites are set to reopen for daily service after being closed for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beginning Monday, April 11, VAC will host daily luncheons, Monday through

In Sandwich, luncheons will be offered at Fox Valley Community Services, 1406 Suydam Road, beginning Wednesday, April 13, featuring an Easter Garden Party.

Libraries set book club events for SA Awareness Month

NIU Motor Behavior Laboratory looking for research participants

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Motor Behavior Laboratory is looking for research participants for a study at the NIU Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Anderson Hall.

According to a news release, the study will focus on the effects of kinesiotape on balance in people with multiple sclerosis.

Participants must call or email to schedule a day and time that fits them best.

Participants for the study must be age 18 or older, have definitive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, self-report balance problems, no exacerbation of the symptoms, relapse-free in the last 30 days, and the ability to walk with or without a cane.

Volunteers will be given either kinesio or sham tape and complete a balance assessment in the lab. The visit should last about 45 minutes. Participants will receive $80 in cash upon completing the study.

Support needed for pool slide at Chamberlain Park

Staylor@shawmedia.com GENOA – The Genoa Township Park Foundation is looking for community donations to help replace a 25-year-old water slide at Chamberlain Park.

Built in 1996, the mushroom pool slide at the pool at Chamberlain Park, 400 E. Second St., is in need of repair. The township foundation, a nonprofit, is overseeing its replacement and has turned to crowd-funding for support, according to a letter campaign sent out by foundation treasurer Judy Thompson. She also is on the Genoa Park District Board of Commissioners.

The foundation hopes to raise $38,000 to replace the slide, a fixture at the park, which was built in 1967. In its 50-year history, the pool itself has been upgraded, with two water slides installed, a diving well, pumps and filtration system, locker rooms, a concession stand and splash pad.

It’s time for the family-favorite water slide, Thompson said.

“It is really old and needs a lot of work done on it,” she said. “When you look at prices, it is really not worth fixing because the cost is so high.”

A new slide is in the works and will feature a playhouse.

Shaw Local News Network SYCAMORE – The Howard and Mildred Eychaner Fund, initially established through the DeKalb County Community Foundation in 2003 as a charitable remainder annuity trust, is available for grant-making.

The fund supports needs and opportunities in DeKalb Township, with priority to projects related to health care and affordable housing. The entire balance of more than $250,000 will be expended within the next 10 years, according to a news release.

The first use of the Eychaner Fund will be to increase the giving capacity of The Promise Fund – El Fondo de la Promesa, a grant to support the needs of underserved residents in DeKalb County.

Howard and Mildred Eychaner were members of the DeKalb community who spent their lives advocating and serving others. Both Howard and Mildred grew up on farms during the Great Depression. Mildred moved to DeKalb and 1937 and attended Northern Illinois University to study economics. Howard also attended NIU, but dropped out after one semester.
