MATHEW SCHMITT
Born: June 17, 1940 in Waukesha, WI Died: October 28, 2021 in Genoa, IL

On Thursday, October 28, 2021, Mathew John Schmitt, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 81. Mathew (Matt) was born on June 17, 1940, to Mathew and Rose (Hollister) Schmitt in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the oldest of four children.
Matt grew up in Whitewater, Wisconsin, where he enjoyed an idyllic childhood spending days on the lake, growing watermelons in the summers, and picking fruit off the trees at harvest time, and generally having the best adventures a boy could hope for.
Matt married his high school sweetheart, Dolores (Dee) DiMaggio, in 1958. In their long and loving marriage, they raised three children, adding nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren to the family along the way. Matt loved and cherished his family. His greatest gift was the time and attention he gave to each family member, often with his signature megawatt smile and a warm, hearty chuckle. He will forever have the love of his family.
Matt was a voracious reader and could often be found examining the latest crime thriller. Matt also enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was restoring antique furniture, refurbishing lighting fixtures, perfecting his yard, or meticulously organizing his workspaces. A master tinkerer, Matt was endlessly creative and shared his many gifts with family and friends. Matt is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Dee; his three children: Lori (Keith) Benson, David (Judy) Schmitt, Kristen (Bradley) Quinn; nine grandchildren; Amanda (Dan), Jessica, Jaclyn (David), Katie (Alex), Ben (Manali), Rachel, Kyle, Matt, and Maya; and nine great-grandchildren: Makayla, Danny, Madison, Landon, Samuel, Carter, Amari, Connor, and Haley. Matt is also survived by his brother John (Linda), and sister Sandra. Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew and Rose, brother, Tom, and brotherin-law Fred Lohmeier. Per his wishes, Matt was cremated, and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charitable cause that Matt was passionate about: Samaritan’s Purse or Saint Jude Hospital.
