By JON RINGER Special to the Morris Herald-News In 1870 The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad began to build a line through the Allegheny Mountains, An early challenge was building the Big Bend Tunnel. They hired men to hammer drill bits into the stone. Then, they would remove the drill bits, fill the holes with explosives, and blast the stone to prepare the right of way, Also, in 1870, the steam drill was invented. Eventually the time arrived for the drill to replace the “steel drivin’ men”. And the Legend of John Henry was born. The story tells us that John Henry was the “best of the best” steel drivers, and a contest was arranged between him and the steam drill. In the short run, John was the better. But the tireless steam drill eventually won. John Henry died trying, and technology conquered. In 1968, ten of us were with a field artillery unit in the jungle near the Cambodian border. We had two shifts of five and worked “8 hours on, 8 hours off “ around the clock and around the calendar. 84 hours a week in good times. More when necessary. While five slept in one bunker, the other five worked in the Fire Direction Control bunker. In July, a helicopter landed at our remote base, and two soldiers brought a sturdy table to the work bunker. Then they brought in a heavy box. Inside was a large computer.... it was about 4 cubic feet in size. And it weighed as much as an 8” artilery shell. Think about a computer. 54 years ago. In the jungle. That’s like Ben Franklin wearing a Rolex or Abe Lincoln on Tik Tok.. It was hooked up to the generator, and we received a crash course on its operation. In the past, we had used 2 guys to plot the target, one guy to man the radio to the target observer and to the big guns, and 2 more to do the calculation of data. Now the calculations would be done by one man’s brain and one guy operating the computer. When the two matched numbers, we were ready to load a 200 pound shell and let it rip. We needed to be very accurate because the shell was guaranteed to kill anything within a 100 meter radius of impact. “Give us a call and watch the rounds fall... from a safe distance.” The computer had a name. FADAC (an acronym for Field Artillery Digital Automatic Computer). FADAC was very good. It came up with the same answers we did. Or close enough. It would calculate the general compass direction to the target (azmuth), the specilfic correction (deflection), the elevation of the barrel (quadrant), the amount of powder needed to hurl the shell there (charge), the fuse on the shell (impact, height of burst, or concrete piercing), and the effect weather had on the shell every thousand feet going up and every thousand feet coming down (the metro). And... it could do it in
a minute or less! The only problem was that we could do the same things manually in about 30 seconds. So, the five of us would pour a cup of coffee and tell jokes while we waited for FADAC to take his sweet time. Sometimes this was not a huge problem. Sometimes. But in August of 1968, the VC and

Grundy County Veteran Service Organizations By Allison Selk The Grundy County Veteran’s Assistance Commission in Morris has seen growth in veterans served over the past year from 1,300 to 1,446 assisted out of nearly 3,000 registered veterans in the county. Ken Buck, GCVAC Superintendent said pre-Covid the office saw 10 to 15 new veterans monthly, currently its 5 to 10, which has picked up since last year as well. Grundy County holds 10 active veteran organizations and Buck and assistant superintendent Sarah Fisher work at the center to care for the veterans in Grundy County. These 10 service organizations include AMVETS Post 53, Chief Shabbona DAV Post 86, Danner-Madsen American Legion Post 663, John Martin Steele VFW Post 6049, La Societe de 40 Hommes et 8 Cheveaux Voiture 1195, Marine Corp League Grundy County Detachment 1372, Mazon American Legion Post 352, Minooka American Legion Post 1188, Morris American Legion Post 294 and Saint Juvin VFW Post 1336. Buck said, “The various veteran service organizations have a variety of programs and services, and Illinois statue also allows the veterans
service organizations to provide certain services to veterans, in order to be more effective they are allowed to merge the financial assistance and VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) claims services into a central office, the VAC. The structure of the VAC is delegates from the veteran service organizations forming the governing board of the commission. Veterans helping veterans.” For instance, “A good example of this is the need for veterans to get to VA health care facilities in Joliet and Hines, IL. The Grundy County VAC has developed a transportation program to meet this need,” Buck explained. Saint Juvin VFW Post 1336 Commander Jim Phillips said these 10 organizations offer a band of camaraderie, all have been in some military service and had similar experiences, which creates an immediate bond of brothers and sisters. In each of the 10 groups, they can be the eyes and ears in the community and understand the needs of the veterans and bring those concerns to the Grundy County VAC meetings, as each group brings delegates to make up the board. “When we are in the meeting, if something has come up, we have the open forum to discuss it, we share our information,” Phillips said. “And we
do get questions, so send them over to Ken and Sarah, they are the experts since they deal with that all of the time.” Buck said these groups are important to the community and to join because they not only help locally with community outreach to veterans, scholarships, youth sports and club sponsorship, but help veterans on a national level in the nation’s capital to fight for rights for veterans. Just this year, the PACT Act was passed which allows veterans exposed to burn pits and toxic substances more VA healthcare and benefits. Buck said these local groups send people out to form national groups to lobby and advocate in Washington D.C. in hopes to get laws passed to aid the veterans. If veterans in Grundy County need specific help with VA navigation or benefits, Buck or Fisher can be contacted for an appointment. The veteran needs to bring discharge information, DD214 forms, and they can work on assistance to the veteran-even surviving spouses may be eligible for benefits with the DD214 paperwork. “We help recent returnees all the way up to World War II veterans-all generations,” Buck said.
