By JON RINGER Special to the Morris Herald-News

It was a red and black plaid jacket. And it had a history in my family. My dad bought it when he returned from the war in 1945. He wore it for a long time. After that, he hung it in the closet by the back door.

OCS Prep was incredibly cool. 48 of us. All college grads with 12 masters and one Phd from Oxford of all places. Athletes, scholars, and really great people. Mostly classroom stuff and weekends at Norman to hang around with the Sooners.

My mom decided it was good for yard work in the autumn or a quick run to the store. It was far too big for her, but she rolled up the sleeves and wore it for several more years.

At the end, we had a choice: Continue with Officers School or drop out and take the next assignment. 24 went to OCS and 24 of us dropped. Of the latter, one went to Korea and 23 went to Vietnam. We had built great friendships in the 10 weeks together. Possibly (excluding me) the very best of American youth. Lean, mean, smart, witty, and ready for whatever was next. But…it was still not my “real life”. I took a 22-hour plane ride to Bien Hoa Airbase in the Republic of Vietnam.

When I came home after my sophomore year at college, she was about to give it to Goodwill. I asked if I could have it and wore it almost everyday for two more years at school. It became my identity, the “lumberjack jacket”, wheat jeans and penny loafers. Since the lady at the Draft Board had a feud with my family (and made it a project to draft me), I got my draft notice the very day I graduated. “No more student deferment. You are mine, chump”. The government gave me 35 days to get my affairs in order. Since I was only having one affair, I kissed her goodbye and went to New York for a month. One last 30-day party. It was a good idea to be careful in New York in the late 1960’s. We weren’t. When I got home, I put on my penny loafers, wheat jeans and plaid jacket and got on the Greyhound bus to get inducted in Des Moines. Raised my hand and took that step forward. They put us on a puddle jumper. Flew us from Des Moines to Omaha, Omaha to Denver, Denver to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake to Seattle-Tacoma. Then we bussed to Fort Lewis. The next morning they gave us two uniforms and a box. “Gentlemen, put your civilian clothing into the box. Everything. Write your home address on the box”. I also put in a note to my mother: Keep this stuff in one place. I’ll need it in two years. My plan was simple. The Army would not change me. I’d do those two years (like the movie gangsters used to say) “standin’ on my head”. When I got out, I’d put on those same clothes, wipe my memory clean, and go back to life. For a long time, it was a pretty good plan. Basic Training was with a bunch of guys from Minnesota…many from the Boundary Waters who had never “been to the big city or seen the elephant” so to speak. Naïve was too generous of a word. Nice guys, but I built few relationships. Just 9 weeks of small talk and transformation from a college punk into a “pretty good” (not great, but OK) soldier. Then it was off to Oklahoma and Officers Preparatory training. “I told them, I ain’t no officer” but they convinced me to try.

Artillery at a remote firebase. 10 to 12 hours of us in the section. We worked 8 hours on and 8 hours off (plus overtime) around the clock calculating fire data. Lived in an underground bunker with rats as big as dogs. Never left the tiny fort unless you went on R&R for a week, went home after a year, or…or…were on the wrong end of a mortar round. We ate a lot of C Rations and Tropical Hershey Bars, stayed dirty for long stretches, and counted the days. But those were the most unselfish guys I ever knew. No one had a personal agenda when it came to the war. We found things to laugh about, learned about each other’s civilian lives and truly celebrated when someone’s year was up…ushering them to a chopper for the goodbye ceremony.

for reclassification. I pretended to have handled everything with ease. She pretended to be happy I wasn’t dead. Then I packed some clothes, put on the red and black plaid jacket and headed for the left coast to see an Officer’s Prep buddy. We had a couple months. From Spokane to Tahoe to Frisco and L.A. we had a trip that put bookends on the Army adventure. New York before and Lala Land after. I came back to the Midwest and took a job. 40 years of real life. 40 years of not talking much about it because that war had not been a popular subject at first or a crisp memory later. But that was about to change. I found my Vietnam guys by accident. They had gone to Vegas in 2006 for a reunion. When they called a number of a guy with my name in Iowa, the kid said, “That was my dad. He’s dead.” So we had another Vegas reunion. I got the prize for having come the farthest…back from the grave. But, more importantly, it was emotional. I found out why I respected them so much in those days. They were the same funny, unselfish people who would still be my friends if we were cast together again. They were from all over the country, but we had an incredible bond and the commonality of combat.

I saw how genuine they were in conversation, how absolutely confident and cool they were during combat, and how much we all cared for each other. The guys at Officers Prep had been great friends. But my boys in Vietnam were brothers.

Somewhere along the way I lost the lumberjack jacket. Literally and figuratively. I realized that I could no more have held my breath for two years than I could have not changed. Their perspective on doing the job, their ability to focus on the mission under duress, and their talent for communication, patience and being concerned about each other was remarkable. Even I had gathered some of their traits and used them without knowing it.

I did my 365, came home and kept in contact with a few for awhile. I still had 5 months at Fort Hood in Texas and ran into some guys down there I knew; guys who had gone on to Officers School and were now just being sent to Vietnam. I felt I had made the right decision.

November 11 is a very special day for me. It’s the day I held my wife’s hand as our daughter was born. And it’s the reason I tear up a bit during a Medal of Honor presentation or a fly over…or just a memory of their bravery and humor during dire times.

When September 16th arrived, the guy across the hall loudly played the Young Rascals singing “It’s a Beautiful Morning”. I dressed in my penny loafers, wheat jeans and lumberjack jacket and cleared post. At the last stoplight before leaving Fort Hood, a Corvette convertible pulled up beside me. It was a Captain I knew through another officer friend. “When you gettin’ out of this Army, trooper,” he asked. I replied, “When this light changes, I’ll get amnesia about these last 2 years.” The light turned green, he saluted me and I drove off to be the guy I was 730 days ago. I went home and visited the Draft Board Lady

And just one more thing…I love long-term relationships. I just returned from a weekend with my college fraternity guys who were there when I turned into me. My golf friends, with whom I have played 2000 rounds of golf. High school buddies, old work friends and the two pretty girls who are my family. I love my eclectic comrades with whom I shared a war. I am lucky to have them all. May God Bless all who interrupted and risked their lives throughout our 245-year history. May God Bless the guys from A Battery.

case and guide the veteran.

Out of 3,000 registered veterans in Grundy County, the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission has at one point helped 1,300 of them. The group continues to assist up to eight new veterans a month.

“We have guys who come into the marine league or legion and ask, ‘What about this?’” said Jeff Alexander of the Marine Corp League of Grundy County Detachment 1372 and Minooka American Legion Post 1188. “I tell them to go see Ken because he can give you the answers you are looking for.”

The GCVAC, led by superintendent Ken Buck and assistant superintendent Sarah Fisher, acts as a hub in the wheel of 10 active veteran service organizations within Grundy County, all geared to assist veterans. These service organizations offer members to serve on the commission board of the GCVAC, which meets monthly to discuss new information that has come down from Veterans Affairs and current needs the groups see with veterans, share fundraisers and activities, and brainstorm ways to better serve veterans in the county. “That’s who I work for,” Buck said. These 10 service organizations are AMVETS Post 53, Chief Shabbona DAV Post 86, Danner-Madsen American Legion Post 663, John Martin Steele VFW Post 6049, La Societe de 40 Hommes et 8 Cheveaux Voiture 1195, Marine Corp League Grundy County Detachment 1372, Mazon American Legion Post 352, Minooka American Legion Post 1188, Morris American Legion Post 294 and St. Juvin VFW Post 1336. Carter Corsello holds the title of GCVAC secretary but also works with various veteran organizations. He said he sees the benefit of a collaboration of the service organizations with the GCVAC when a veteran comes to him and asks for help. He can present information he has learned from being in the commission group to the veteran, and then suggest an appointment with Buck or Fisher, who can open a

Alexander said before he became involved with service organizations, he contacted Fisher, who helped him apply for hearing aids. He now uses that link to the GCVAC to be a delegate for veterans who come to him with questions. “I’m trying to do more for the veteran as far as outreach programs to help the guys in need and do things for the town,” Alexander said. Corsello said if the county did not have a veterans assistance commission, each service organization would need to have a well-trained, designated person to be the liaison, which may not be feasible. “These groups may not have the resources to commit to it or may not have the capability. Roles change within groups, it’s good to have one person designated by the county,” Corsello said. “If someone needs assistance, we can send them to Ken; he has the resources behind him.”

‘Taking care of our own’: Veteran employees give back through cemetery work By Allison Selk Of the 30 employees at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, 22 have served in the military and now give back to other veterans as a career. “The veterans who work here are an asset because they have served, they know what its like to have served and they continue to serve,” said Quincy McCall, director of the cemetery. “Because of their military service, most are very well disciplined, accustomed to challenges, hard workers and the list can go on.” McCall said the 22 employees serve in these positions: director, assistant director, director intern trainee, foreman, administrative officer, program specialist, budget analyst, cemetery representatives, interment work leader, grounds work leader, engineering equipment operators, equipment maintenance worker, gardener, facility maintenance worker and cemetery caretakers. After 11 years in the Army and six deployments, budget analyst Josh Polega applied to the cemetery in order to give back to the veteran community. “I’m able to work with veterans; I understand where they came from, it’s one team, one fight. I can understand their trials and tribulations of what they went through. Only a veteran can understand a veteran,” Polega said. Chris Lowe spent four years in the Marine Corps as a landing support specialist. When he returned home, he visited his best friend who was buried at the cemetery.

are taking care of our own veterans and families after death,” Wenner said of the importance of veteran employees at the cemetery. “We have compassion and can assist them better because we are veterans ourselves. One team, one fight.”

Lowe walked into the office on the cemetery grounds and asked if there were any positions open. He began as a caretaker and then made his way up to interment work leader, a job where he helps his staff plan out their day in the field and stresses the importance of grave and grounds management. He said he expects the staff to take care of the graves as if they were family. “Leave a grave as if it was your brother or sister because these are our brothers and sisters in arms,” Lowe said. He also felt his military background allowed him to not only connect with fellow veteran employees, but the fam-

“He said, ‘Coming out here and talking to you guys helps, you are all veterans and you can relate to what I’m saying,’” Lowe said. Cemetery representative David Wenner spent 25 years in the Army and three years in the reserves before he came to the cemetery two years ago. He escorts families to shelters for services, introduces the memorial squad and assists in the preparation of cases. He said it was important for him to work a job in this capacity so he could honor the veterans in their final resting places as well as be of service to the families. “We were veterans ourselves, now we

McCall said the veterans are assets as employees, “But this is also an opportunity for us to continue to service our brothers and sisters even in death by ensuring that they receive the dignified burial and that they rest in a place of honor because of their unselfish and honorable service to our nation. It’s an honor and a privilege to work at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.” Polega agreed. “There’s not a better way to help a veteran, and give back to the greatest generation than at their final resting place.”
