The future looks bright for Grundy County business and industry. Last year, the region saw its unemployment drop to the lowest rate in seven years, existing companies made significant new investments in their facilities, and the education and business community partnered to bring new opportunities to local students. These investments in Grundy County will pay dividends for years to come.

Many times going unnoticed, local companies made significant investments in their facilities and employees in 2015. LyondellBasell, located in Grundy County since 1969, invested approximately $60 million in its facility on Route 6 in 2015. Thanks to the low cost of natural gas, Lyondell’s primary feedstock, they are planning for an even larger investment this year of nearly $150 million.

In the same neighborhood, Aux Sable Liquid Products is currently constructing a $130 million plant expansion, and Akzo Nobel is in the midst of

In two years’ time, these three facilities are investing more than $420 million. Not only do the current employees benefit from this type of re-investment but it is also a tremendous boom for our local, skilled construction workers doing this work.

Consider that during Exelon Dresden’s refueling, approximately 1,200 contractors were on site. The economic impact felt throughout the county is dramatic.

The new year also brings new members of our business community. Going online this month, Airgas will start shipping product at its state-ofthe-art air-separating facility located in Minooka. The $40 million manufacturing plant anticipates hiring approx-

imately 50 new employees.

Also in Minooka, Hampton Inn opened for customers just last month. The new $12 million hotel anticipates providing 25 new jobs and extra amenities for its guests.

This year hopefully will see the new $110 million Costco meat processing facility begin construction. The project won’t be online until 2017, but it plans to hire in excess of 80 people to run its facility.

Highly skilled and trained workforce is more important than ever. The Grundy County workforce is up to the challenge, and the pipeline is created for future employees.

The Grundy County Summer Internship Program is in its fourth year and has grown dramatically each year. The program was born to match the county’s best and brightest kids with good-paying job opportunities. Too often, our children go away to college or post-high school programs and never return because they are unaware of the opportunities right here in

their own backyard. Thankfully, that is being remedied with 18 companies/agencies hosting 40 paid internships this summer. Joliet Junior College, in partnership with local industry leaders, began an Operations Engineering and Technician degree to also provide a skilled workforce for local businesses.

In this world of 24-hour news, it seems that too often the reports are always negative. However, take a look around what is happening in Grundy County and you’ll see there is much to look forward to and many reasons to be grateful.

Morris Area Public Library children’s librarian retires after 37 years

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – The stories were plentiful, the thank-yous heartfelt, and the tears and laughter were seen and heard throughout the Morris Area Public Library on Saturday afternoon as board members, staff and Friends of the Library threw a retirement party for Children’s Library Director Carol Hutchings.

“We’ve appreciated her so much,” Morris resident Donna Thorson said of Hutchings.

“Her friendliness, her smiles, her expertise and knowledge and just the helpfulness.”

“She used to help me with reading and school,” said Jacub Vota, 18, of Morris. “Everybody knows Mrs. Hutchings.”

Pam McCabe of Morris said she took her daughter, now Margaret Russo, to Hutchings’ very first story time years ago.

“My kids adored her,” McCabe said. “We have lots of good memories.”

McCabe came to wish Hutchings the best and thank her for her years at the library. She brought her daughter, Russo of Naperville, and granddaughters Isabella and Daniella.

Russo said the girls always would travel back home during the Thanksgiving holiday to attend Breakfast with Santa, which Hutchings always organized.

“My children and my grandchildren and all of the children I babysat for, they all loved her,” said library board member Jo Dergo. “I think she was the pillar of this library.”

Dergo said she felt sad to see Hutchings go. In addition to all the children she touched at the library, Hutchings’ outreach to schools, preschools and the community instilled a love of reading in many children who might have not otherwise experienced that exposure.

Hutchings retired after serving more than 37 years in the library. The past year was somewhat turbulent, however, coming to a head last July when she was fired by Director Lorene Kennard. The library board reinstated her shortly thereafter, but Hutchings put in her notice of retirement just a few months later.

Board member Carol Anderson said Hutchings would be

greatly missed.

“She is just the heart and soul of the library,” Anderson said. “She’s just a treasure.”

Longtime Friend of the Library Sue Morse agreed.

“Every kid who ever came to her, she learned their name,” Morse said, “and after that, she called them by name. She had a mind like a bear trap.”

Betty Cartar of Morris attended to wish Hutchings the best and to remind her of a time when Cartar brought two lines

from a favorite poem and asked Hutchings to help figure out what the poem was. It was for Cartar’s daughter.

Hutchings found that poem online, Cartar said, and gave it to her.

Hutchings’ mother, Dorothy Christenson of Dwight, was at the party with her son, Tom, and said she was proud of her daughter. She remembers Hutchings being a fan of her hometown library since she was a young girl.

“I’m overwhelmed,” Hutchings said midway through the reception. “Their support and their love is phenomenal.”

Hutchings said she will miss sharing reading with the children and getting to know their families. At this point, Hutchings doesn’t have set plans for her retirement.

“Quilting,” Hutchings said.

“I have some fabric stashed away. And spend time with my grandkids.”

Morris District 54 holds fun fair MORRIS – Parents had no problem getting their kids to go to School on Saturday.

Bowling, bingo and a bounce house were just some of the fun times awaiting the community at the District 54 PTO annual fun fair held at White Oak School.

The annual fundraiser gives students and their families the opportunity to get out of the house each January to do something fun locally.

Bison have a growing fan club at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie 7 WILMINGTON – The number of visitors to the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has increased significantly following the reintroduction of American bison in late October.

Midewin staff recorded between 400 and 500 visitors during pleasant weather days at the Iron Bridge Trailhead, designated as the public access point closest to the bison’s pasture areas.

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Supervisor Wade Spang said that’s exceptionally higher than in previous years. About 17,000 people visited the nationally operated grassland prairie in 2013, the last time Midewin conducted an in-depth visitor survey, according to a Midewin news release. Surveys are conducted every five years with the next one due in 2018.

The bison appear to have a growing fan base.

“There are a lot of folks who enjoy coming out and seeing the bison. Some are coming back again and again,” Spang said. “And [the bison] have acclimated quite well since they arrived. They seem to be enjoying their location.”

Visitors are encouraged to call or stop by the Welcome Center to learn more about opportunities to see the bison roaming on any given day.

Because of the vast size of the pasture system and the rolling hills, spotting bison may be difficult depending on the herd’s location and weather.

“With a little patience, and maybe some binoculars, you can see them,” Spang said.

Staff has noticed some of the bison cows are beginning to expand in their rib cage, indicating they will be baby calves that arrive in the spring, according to the news

release. Spang said it’s an exciting time for Midewin.

A public event is being planned for May, Spang said, although he couldn’t offer additional details.

Rich Short, landscape architect at Midewin, said the bison herd has the potential to

raise Midewin’s profile “tremendously” and attract more people to the national tallgrass prairie.

“I think we have to wait and see what the effect will be, but I think the potential is here for it to be a big draw for the people to Midewin,” Short said.

To see bison roam at Midewin has been a long-sought dream of the U.S. Forest Service site since it was established in 1996. The bison reintroduction is part of an experimental long-term project to see how the herd’s grazing habits can benefit the habitat.

Grief workshops to help broken-hearted cope with loss

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The range of emotions one can experience following a significant loss can be described as a grief rollercoaster, according to Kathy Cherven.

There’s also a misconception that you can just “get over” a loss, said Cherven, a licensed clinical professional counselor and registered nurse. That loss doesn’t need to be the death of a family member or friend, either, for the seemingly inexplicable changes in feelings to occur, she said.

“Some nondeath losses can be just as intense as death losses,” Cherven said.

For the next three Wednesdays, she will host from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in her office at 103 E. Jefferson St. in Morris workshops for broken-hearted adults.

In the first workshop, held last Wednesday, participants learned about all facets of grief, Cherven said. People in the first meeting had experienced a variety of loss types. She had par-

ticipants draw their own “grief rollercoaster” as a way of mapping out the range of emotions they’ve experienced.

“It is a very powerful exercise,” she said.

This Wednesday, the group will learn about specific emotions associated with grief and what the emotions really mean.

In the third meeting, Feb. 3, she plans to get into adjusting and coping skills.

“The hope is to grieve through doing [things] and expression,” Cherven said. “I want to help empower them.”

She said she uses techniques such as journaling or painting to help people open up. Cherven explained that with post-traumatic stress, communication shuts down in the narrative half of the brain. When there are no words to explain what

you feel, everything gets stuck in non-narrative part of brain, which creates anxiety and flashbacks, she said.

Cherven said she is trained in post-traumatic stress disorder matters and has dealt with many cases as a result of the EF3 tornado that struck the Coal City area in June 2015. Though thankfully no one died because of the tornado, Cherven said many people still experienced terrible losses. More than 800 properties were damaged while family keepsakes and traditions were scattered into thin air.

“People lost more than just material possessions,” she said.

Regardless of how or why someone is grieving over a loss, Cherven said folks need to know it’s alright to grieve – even if it’s not death-related. Often, grief comes out in behaviors and affects one’s quality of life.

For anyone unsure if he or she would be comfortable with a group setting, Cherven said to call her at 815-416-9036 for a free consultation. She may recommend beginning with individual meetings, or reassure someone it’s alright to meet in a group. She said people often come in silent, but wind up expressing themselves.

“To see complete strangers hugging is a very powerful thing,” Cherven said.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Some homeowners in northeastern Illinois, including those who live in Grundy County, are eligible to apply for home repair grants and low interest home improvement loans, thanks to a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development program.

A Rural Development repair loan is similar to a home improvement loan. The money must be used to improve or modernize homes, make them safer and more sanitary, or remove health and safety hazards.

Examples of eligible repairs include roofing, siding, windows, foundation repairs, kitchen cabinets, septic system, furnace/air conditioning. The maximum loan amount is $20,000. Loans can be made for a term of 20 years at 1 percent interest.

The applicant needs to own and occupy the home, have acceptable credit, be able to repay the loan, and meet very low income guidelines. For example, a family of four in Grundy County can earn up to $40,650 and still qualify.

A limited number of home repair grants are also available to applicants who meet very low income guidelines, are 62 years of age or older and demonstrate an inability to make loan payments.

There is a $7,500 lifetime limit on repair grant funds.

Grant funds can only be used to address health, safety or accessibility issues for the home. Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. Grants are frequently made in conjunction with small loans.

OBITUARIES WESLEY J. CHAPMAN Born: July 17, 1926 Died: Jan. 23, 2016

Wesley J. Chapman, 89, of Marseilles, formerly of Seneca, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles with Rev. Duane Kaufman officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles with military honors by the Marseilles Honor Guard.

He was born July 17, 1926, in Manlius Township, to Hiram and Ella (Hetelle) Chapman. In 1959, he married Norma McDermott of Seneca who preceded him in death in 2003.

Morris boys fall to Sterling in NIB 12 play Saturday / 15

STAFF REPORTS STERLING – On Friday night, the Morris boys basketball team came out of the locker room and had a strong first quarter, scoring 17 points and taking a 17-15 lead over Sycamore. Unfortunately. that strong start didn’t last and the Redskins scored just 21 more points in the final three quarters en route to a 54-38 defeat.

Saturday night was nearly identical.

Morris stormed out of the gate early, hitting five 3-pointers in the first quarter and taking a 15-14 lead over Sterling.

However, a 24-0 Sterling run to start the second quarter, highlighted by the play of sophomore Sean Gingrich, was too much for the Redskins to overcome. Morris (8-12 ;1-7 Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division) scored just 18 points in the final three quarters and dropped a 67-33 NI Big 12 crossover decision.

Gingrich got his first start of the season on Saturday, and made the most of his opportunity. The sophomore guard made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points in the Golden Warriors’ 67-33 win over the visiting Redskins in a NI Big 12 crossover game.

Gingrich has been used sparingly this season, averaging about 3 minutes a game in a reserve role off the bench. During Tuesday’s practice however, Warriors coach Ryan Vasquez shuffled the lineup and told the team Gingrich would start against the Redskins.

As a sophomore playing on varsity for the first time, Gingrich figured his minutes would be limited, but he never let that stop him from preparing like a starter during practice. His work ethic throughout the season didn’t escape the coaches, and it made for an easy decision for Vasquez.

“It was just Sean’s time,” Vasquez said following the win.

“He earned it. He put in the work and the results showed [Saturday].”

Gingrich wasn’t over whelmed by the moment and started off hot. He found himself with the ball behind the 3-point line early in the first quarter

His three was followed by a 3-pointer from teammate Ryan Blackburn, and Sterling (13-5, 3-2) was able to stay with Morris after the Redskins took a 15-14 lead into the second quarter after making five 3s of their own.

Junior guard Matt Shaw connected on four 3-pointers in the quarter for 12 points, which ended up as the team-leading total for the Redskins, but didn’t score again.

The Warriors’ 24-0 run to open the second quarter was aided by eight Redskins turnovers and hot shooting from all over the floor. Gingrich went 4 for 5 in the quarter, including two more 3-pointers, and added two steals during the run.

On one play late in the first half, Gingrich shuffled into the corner and drained a 3-pointer as Morris was late in rotating.

The shot forced Morris coach Joe Blumberg to call a timeout. Blumberg told his players during the stoppage they had to be aware of Gingrich at all

times, and instructed them to not allow Gingrich a clean look.

Sterling made nine 3s in all, four coming from Gingrich, three more from Blackburn, and two from Zach Springman. Young, a junior, scored 10 points and was effective in transition. Young scored four points during Sterling’s 10-2 run to open the third quarter that pushed the Warriors’ lead to 48-19.

Morris had trouble stopping the scoring runs because of 24 turnovers. Sterling, meanwhile, committed nine turn-

overs, and shot 60 percent (26 of 43), effectively burying Morris.

Morris led Sycamore, 33-31, entering the fourth quarter and pulled away with a 12-4 run in the fourth. Nathan Wantland led the Redskins (9-9, 2-5) with 18 points, while Kameron Dransfeldt scored nine and Tyler Dunne added seven.

Morris girls ride defense to win over Sterling STAFF REPORTS STERLING – With a couple of key players out of the lineup, Sterling figured to possibly sputter a bit during Saturday’s game against NIB-12 crossover opponent Morris.

Unfortunately for the Golden Warriors, they did just that in a 30-27 loss to the Redskins at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

One of the team’s top inside threats, Kaylee Martin, is no longer playing as she dedicates more time to volleyball. Also, point guard Jailyn Borum missed Saturday’s game for a volleyball function.

It led to a game in which the Golden Warriors (10-13, 4-3 NIB-12 West) were within striking distance the entire game, but unable to seize control against the Redskins.

“We have enough seniors that we needed somebody to step up tonight and take care of things when things started going south,” Sterling coach Casey Carbaugh said, “and we didn’t have that.”

Sterling’s main undoing was in the turnover department, where they racked up 26. Ten of those came via Morris steals, but the other 16 were on the Golden Warriors.

“I talked to the girls in the locker room. The worst part about it was they were lazy turnovers, and they were unforced,” Carbaugh said.

Coal City rallied late, outscoring the Irish 33-20 in the second half, but fell just short. Nick Micetich led the Coalers with 24 points, while Keegan Clampitt scored eight and Christian Johnson added seven.

Minooka Invitational: Minooka finished seventh at the 16-team event held at Channahon Lanes on Saturday, while Morris took 15th. West Aurora won the event with a six-game total of 5,631. Minooka hs a 4,891 score while Morris recorded a pinfall of 4,055.

Gina Russell led Minooka by placing 28th with a total of 1,027, followed by Kristina Sickler (35th, 985), Nora Russell (37th, 979) and Carmella Russell (41st, 944). Morris’ top performer was Cadenz Fitzgerald, who finished 38th with a total of 970. She was backed up by Amy Waldron (42nd, 942), Corrinne Day (52nd, 897) and Allison Kukman (69th, 690).

​Gov. Bruce Rauner blew a perfect opportunity last week to finally drive a public wedge between Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan, clearly put Madigan on the defensive and maybe finally make progress on an important issue which might save the state a billion dollars a year.

But he badly bungled the rollout of a deal with Cullerton on pension reform. Instead of describing the agreement for what it really was, Rauner greatly exaggerated its scope and portrayed it as a big defeat for AFSCME and other unions.

In reality, the deal with Cullerton (and there still is a deal with Cullerton, despite what you may be reading elsewhere) is narrow in scope and elegantly designed to put Madigan in a truly tough position.

The plan, negotiated over months, is to use most of Cullerton’s bill to offer employees a choice. If they want to keep their compounded 3 percent annual cost of living increase, then their pay hikes going forward won’t be pensionable. If they want their raises to be pensionable going forward, then those raises would be subjected to the “Tier 2” pension law – annual simple interest pension increases which are either half the Consumer Price Index or 3 percent, whichever is less.

Cullerton has long maintained that if employees are offered a legitimate choice then the state’s constitutional pension contract language would be satisfied. Others note that the constitution also declares that pension benefits cannot be diminished or impaired.

To maybe make this work, however, the law would have to be changed to forbid public employee unions from negotiating on this particular, narrow topic. Pension rights are individual legal rights, so only individuals can make the choice about whether to apply their pay raises to their pensions or not.

And in a brilliant move, the Cullerton and Rauner negotiators deliberately included some important language from Speaker Madigan’s own pension proposal on this very topic: “Employers shall not be required to bargain over matters affected by the changes, the impact of changes, and the implementation of changes” made to state pension law.

So, Rauner had Cullerton on board and Madigan in a tight box. Not a bad day’s work.

But when he explained it to reporters, Rauner went way over his skis. To be constitutional, he said, “Salary increases have to be taken out of collective bargaining.”

“This is a key point,” Rauner wrongly continued. “Salary increases come out of collective bargaining. So the union has nothing

That’s just not even close to being true.

Under this proposal, the unions can still negotiate salary increases, they just can’t negotiate over what part of those salary increases are pensionable.

And Rauner just couldn’t resist taking another shot. “What we’d like to do in the future is to take other things out of collective bargaining at the state and at the city levels.”

As if things aren’t already on edge during this aggravating months-long impasse, Rauner let his longtime hatred of unions get in the way of what could’ve been a triumphant day. Everything quickly blew up, with Speaker Madigan shooting down the whole idea and a confused Cullerton (who had prepared a supportive, bipartisan press release in advance) claiming “It’s not my plan.”

The problem here is that trust is almost nonexistent. Nobody at the top trusts anybody else. So, Cullerton immediately assumed that Rauner had double-crossed him.

Later, staff members from the governor’s office explained what the governor actually meant, and Cullerton’s people said they were still backing the deal they had made with Rauner – but only that deal.

If the governor had quickly corrected his obvious error, this whole thing would’ve been easily cleared up.

But no way would Rauner’s people even consider admitting a problem with what the boss said, instead blaming it all on Cullerton and claiming the press coverage was clearly going their way.

And then late in the evening, with the media coverage going against them, Rauner’s office finally, grudgingly admitted that, “Perhaps the governor was not as precise in his word selection as the Democrats would have liked.”

Even so, last week marked an important turning point.

Rauner finally got Cullerton to triangulate Madigan. Once the craziness dies down a bit, Madigan will be forced to take sides.

Will he back language his own staff wrote for another bill, or will he just say “No” and begin fighting with Cullerton?

Forget the temporary blowup. That’s the real thing to watch here.

It is often best to go with your first thought. It is especially galling to stop, analyze, then make a mistake, when if you had acted instantaneously, you would have been successful.

However, there are deals in which the converse is true: The first thought is wrong, and a different approach needs to be chosen.

Which applies in this deal? Against four hearts, West leads his fourth-highest club. After East wins with the ace, what would be his immediate reaction? Is it right here? If not, what is?

South opened with a textbook weak two-bid: a decent six-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North bid what he hoped his partner could make.

East’s immediate reaction will be to return a club – lead back partner’s suit. If it were a no-trump contract, that would usually be best. But when there is a trump suit, third hand should pause to consider the alternatives.

In particular, he should wonder from where four defensive tricks might come.

Given the dummy, East can see two: his club ace and heart king.

Assuming West has the club king, that is a third. The fourth will have to come from spades, and there isn’t a moment to lose because dummy’s diamonds are threatening to provide discards.

At trick two, East must shift to the spade eight, the high card denying an honor in the suit. Then the contract will fail. But note that if East leads a club at trick two, South will take one spade, five hearts and four diamonds.

Husband worried about wife’s cheating needs reality check Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married seven years and have two beautiful children. Overall, the time we have been together has been wonderful, although we do sometimes argue.

On more than one occasion, my husband has shared his concern that I am cheating on him. I have never been unfaithful, nor have I ever given him any reason to think I would be. He’s worried because he knows my father was unfaithful to my mother many years ago. We both learned about it because my mother shared it while discussing my brother and his wife.

Having had no prior knowledge of this period in my parents’ lives, I was shocked.

I didn’t grow up around it

husband “read” that adultery is hereditary, but it’s time you asked to see the source of his misinformation because it’s wrong. You are not responsible for your father’s behavior, and for your husband to imply that because your father strayed you will is, frankly, insulting.

If you are accused of infidelity any time there’s a disagreement, you two aren’t getting to the root of what’s really wrong in your marriage, and it’s time to get professional marriage counseling.

My brother-in-law’s girlfriend of many years was on her cellphone during the cocktail hour, the entire dessert course

and the gift exchange. When I mentioned to my husband how rude she was, he told me she had been checking football scores and cheering/commenting while my daughter was playing the violin song her ensemble had played for the holiday concert.

I never answer my phone when I’m entertaining guests because they are where my attention should be. My daughters have been taught that it’s rude to be on the phone during dinner and when guests are over.

How can I nip this in the bud without causing a rift with my brother-in-law, whom I love dearly? If “Pseudo Auntie” does not want to socialize with the people she has been invited to be with, she should

you that “Pseudo Auntie’s” behavior was rude, and I don’t blame you for feeling upset about it. I do not think it should cause a rift if you were to tell your brother-inlaw and his girlfriend that using her cellphone during the dinner you worked so hard to prepare, and during your daughter’s violin recital, caused hurt feelings. And tell them that in the future you would like her to leave her phone elsewhere during family gatherings in your home.
