bid for storm sewer plan Project will extend current pipes to run through city’s center

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Nearly four years ago, the Morris City Council voted to begin the first phase of a state-required, longterm control plan designed to improve the storm sewer system.

The council voted, 7-0, Tuesday night to approve a bid from “D” Construction for the second phase of the plan.

Alderman Sid Nelson was absent.

Seven bids came in for the project, ranging from $4.8 million on the high end to the council-approved $3.3 million from “D” Construction. The bid came in about $343,000 higher than estimated.

The plan is based on the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s unfunded mandate to eliminate any overflow from heavy rains going into rivers or creeks.

• Michael S. McCarty II, 26, of Joliet, was arrested

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a Grundy County failure to appear warrant for a charge of domestic battery. He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Cory L. Watts, 36, of Diamond, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Thursday on a DuPage County warrant for charges of obstructing, battery and driving under the influence.

term control plan calls for the planting of a deep, large pipe from the west end of Washington Street downtown north to the intersection of Pleasant and Lisbon streets. The pipe will cross Nettle Creek twice and require three borings.

Alderman Don Matteson said in the meeting he was concerned about safety with such deep digging required, but Kopczick attempted to reassure him about the process.

“I hope we hit coal,” Matteson said jokingly .

Matteson also asked what would be done with the extra materials gathered from digging. City Engineer Guy Christensen said the bid by “D” Construction states the company will be responsible for relocating the excess material.

Kopczick said Wednesday that the city hopes to start the second phase in the spring and with accommodating weather, finish by the end of the year.

There are four phases to the project, with the final one extending pipe north to George Street.

Morris Rotary awards Joe Schmitz with status as a Paul Harris Fellow

MORRIS – Joe Schmitz was just 7 when he accompanied his father as he handed out baskets of food in Streator days before Christmas in 1949.

It’s that day that Schmitz said the spirit of Christmas became real to him. And it’s a spirit he has spent much of his life sharing with others.

Schmitz was honored Wednesday night at the regular meeting of the Morris Rotary Club. The local club donated $1,000 in Schmitz’s honor to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, awarding him status has a Paul Harris Fellow.

The recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

According to the Rotary International website, the Paul Harris Fellow recognition “was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.”

“We’ve honored several people over the years,” Rotary President John Carr said. “In our 100th year in Morris, we decided we would honor two people, Joan Sereno and Joe Schmitz.”

Carr said that as members of the largest humanitarian organization in the world, the Morris Rotary looks for those who give back to the community in a humanitarian way, exemplifying the spirit of Rotary.

“It doesn’t get much more humanitarian than Operation St. Nick,” Carr said.

Schmitz started Operation St. Nick (officially) 33 years ago after helping in a grass-roots effort for three years with his wife, Carol. The idea behind the mission was to share the spirit of Christmas to those in the

“Gosh, we had no idea it would get this big. We just wanted to make a holiday happy for as many kids as possible by providing one gift like St. Nick did,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz joins a long list of more than 1 million Paul Harris Fellow recipients. Some of the more notable recipients are Mother Teresa, entertainer Pearl Bailey, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and U.S. astronaut James Lovell.

Locally, recipients include Joan Sereno, executive director of Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, who received her certificate in November, and teacher Barb Rath, who has

overseen National Honor Society and student council at Morris Community High School.

Schmitz said it was humbling to be honored and join a list that included those recipients.

“I don’t belong with that list,” Schmitz said. “God has been good to me. He gave me two arms: one to receive his gifts and one to return them to others.”

Schmitz said he was happy that the money donated in his honor will help children around the world through the Rotary Foundation.

“You can’t get any better than that,” Schmitz said. “God has to smile down whether we are helping globally or locally.”

mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – They won’t be able to have their own credit cards for eight to 10 years, but Coal City area fourth- and fifth-graders learned Wednesday the ins and outs, as well as the ups and downs, of credit.

Coal City Library’s Money Sense for Tweens class meets once a month at the library.

In each meeting, the students learn about a different topic within the broad subject of money. The class spends the first half-hour taking in a lesson on money, and the second half-hour using hands-on learning manipulatives and games bought with grant money from the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

“It’s really cool that this program came from grants through the Community Foundation of Grundy County,” children’s services librarian Sue Zitella said. “We’ve been doing it for about two years now. We hope the kids are learning a bit about money.”

The class usually has about 20 children in it, Zitella said, but attendance was low this time due to students’ conflicting schedules full of practices for plays and basketball.

Those who attended underwent some banking lessons in cartoon form at handsonbanking.org. One example aiding in the explanation of interest featured an imaginary credit card purchase of $100 worth of video games with a 5 percent sales tax, raising the cost to $105.

“The sites we use really connect with the kids,” Zitella said.

The class then budgeted a minimum payment of $20 a month for six months to pay off the games. Using addition, they calculated that it would cost an additional $3.83 if they pay $20

Zitella asked the students why banks issue credit cards.

They answered that banks can profit off interest. But a couple wondered aloud a few moments later why people would pay to have a credit card.

They learned how bad credit can accumulate and keep a person from owning a home.

That prompted one student to say, “You don’t want to end up living in your mom’s basement.” The group spent the last half-hour playing “ATM Action! Money Game.” Students navigated the board by earning money and keeping track of it on write and wipe game cards.

In past sessions, the class has learned about concepts such as savings, allowance, budgeting and now credit cards.

“We took it to another level today, by learning how to use credit cards wisely,” Zitella said.

The next meeting is Feb. 17.

Sages Meat Market moving from Morris to Oswego

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com OSWEGO – Sages Meat Market, which has operated in Morris for more than a decade, is scheduled to relocate in April to the Route 34 corridor in Oswego.

On Tuesday, the Oswego Village Board approved a $55,000 economic development loan sought by meat market owners Tom and Ann Dobbels.

The funds, which will come from the village’s Revolving Loan Fund, will help the business get off the ground.

Ann, a former first-grade teacher, had dreams of selling homemade soups, sandwiches and salads from the family’s Morris location, but with no kitchen, the dream would never come to fruition.

When they went in search of a new location, they said Oswego’s loan incentive and tight-knit community drew them to town.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Sages will be missed because it had great meats and helped shoppers avoid crowds at larger stores. But, he added, the move is out of the city’s control.

“Moves like these are made by business owners after much deliberation, in the interest of making the best business decision,” he said.

Oswego Finance Director Mark Horton said, the village’s Revolving Loan Fund was established to provide financial assistance to new or expanding businesses within the municipality and to develop a stronger economic base and expanded job opportunities.

“Payments go back into that fund, interest goes back into that fund, and are used for projects that can’t typically get financing from a bank,” Oswego Economic Development Director Vijay Gadde said.

Interest on loans is about 3 percent, which is lower than a typical bank loan, he said.

The Dobbels said, the estimated total cost for the project is $111,000. They are seeking $55,000 from the fund for the purchase of kitchen equipment and to pay for the interior build-out of the leased space.

The couple, who will locate their business at 4538 Route 71 in the old Genoa Pizza space, said they are thrilled about the move and are excited to bring their products to Oswego residents, although they anticipate their old customers will make the drive to their new location.

“We’re hoping to bring more customers to Oswego and to see the downtown as well,” Tom Dobbels told the

board during a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

Tom Dobbels said he plans to cross-sell with existing businesses, including Sage Spice Shop and Ace Hardware, who they hope will sell more grills as a result of the new meat market location.

“We are huge supporters of community organizations through donations and discounts,” the couple wrote in a memo to the board.

The business currently provides meat for Yorkville and Minooka football cookouts.

Tom Dobbles, who grew up on a livestock farm, said he hopes to bring his years of butcher experience to new clientele. He said his family plans on reaching out to residents to see what they’d like at the new location.

The menu, which includes gourmet burgers, such as bacon jalapeno cheddar and mushroom Swiss, is vast.

Specialty items – ranging from cheese-stuffed portabella mushrooms to stuffed green peppers – accompany dozens of different beef, chicken and pork cuts.

Sausages, bison, elk, venison and fish also are featured.

The Dobbles will even cut deer to order and make fresh sausages or smoked products out of hunters’ kills. The business also will accept LINK cards.

Saratoga school board votes yes for cost-saving bond refinancing

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C Board of Education met Tuesday night and voted to refinance the district’s 2007 bonds because of lower interest rate options.

All members present voted for the refinancing. Member Scott Thorson and President Mark Overbeck were absent.

Jamie Rachlin, managing director of municipal finance for RBC Capital Markets LLC, spoke via phone to the board about the deal.

Rachlin said the interest rates came down from 4 percent to 2.61 percent, which saves the district $807,000.

Superintendent Kathy Perry said the first-year savings are $340,000, and then $46,000 each year until fiscal 2027.

“The reason I chose to receive more savings in year one was to protect the district in case Senate Bill 318 passes, but we don’t know when that will happen,” Perry said.

According to the Illinois General Assembly website, SB 318 amends the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law in the property tax code.

The bill makes changes concerning the definitions of “taxing district” and “extension limitation” to provide that, for the 2016 and 2017 levy years, the law applies to all home rule and non-home rule taxing districts outside of Cook County, and the extension limitation for those districts in those levy years is zero percent.

The law allows a taxing district to receive a limited inflationary increase in tax extensions on existing property, plus an additional amount for new construction.

The new deadline for action on SB 318 is Jan. 29, but Perry said she was frustrated because the bill deadline has moved several times, making it difficult to budget for the district.

In the principal reports, Saratoga Principal Joe Zweeres said Saratoga PTO fundraiser Luck of the Irish Draw Down is scheduled for March 12 at the Morris VFW. Tickets are $50, and include entry, dinner for two and a chance to win a grand prize of $1,500. There also will be a 50-50 raffle and a raffle for themed gift baskets.

“New this year, the extracurricular and music boosters joined the athletic boosters as one big group to raise money for Saratoga,” Zweeres said.

Custom trays are fabricated that fit to your teeth and you are given strong bleach material to use in the trays. Typical results occur after two weeks.

The other method is in-office bleaching, where teeth are bleached in an hour. Patients go home with whiter teeth. Sensitivity is highest with the in-office bleaching. For the best results, a combination of the in-office bleaching and bleaching trays is the way to go.

There is a history of macular degeneration in my family and I am wondering whether I should take a vitamin for my eyes?

The largest studies on vitamin supplementation for macular degeneration were funded by the National Institutes of Health.They were referred to as Age Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS) and there were two specific studies, the AREDS 1 and AREDS 2. These studies showed that using a combination of vitamins slowed the progression of macular degeneration in people who had category 3 and 4 macular degeneration, but did not prevent a person from developing macular degeneration or help people that had early macular degeneration.

By GREGORY KATZ The Associated Press LONDON – Publisher and philanthropist George Weidenfeld, who in his later years devoted himself to improving understanding between faiths and peoples, died Wednesday in London at 96.

His office said Weidenfeld died in his sleep after a brief illness.

Weidenfeld was a member of the House of Lords who had recently launched an initiative to help save Christians facing persecution at the hands of Islamic State extremists in the Middle East.

He established a “safe havens” fund that made it possible for Christians to relocate.

Born in Vienna, Weidenfeld studied at the University of Vienna before fleeing his native country in 1938, ahead of the start of World War II, to avoid Nazi persecution of

Jews. He said his work on behalf of threatened Christians was an effort to thank British Quakers for helping him when he first arrived in Britain.

He told the Jewish Chronicle in a 2009 interview that he had fought a duel with a Nazi student in 1937. He said it ended in a draw – and that he looked his opponent up after the war and they shared a salami sandwich.

Weidenfeld worked for the BBC as a political commentator and also wrote newspaper columns before he and British writer Nigel Nicolson in 1949 founded a publishing house, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, that eventually became quite successful.

The firm gained notoriety in 1959 for publishing the British edition of Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita,” despite the threat of prosecution for obscenity. No legal action was taken. The book’s strong

sales put the publishers on a secure financial footing but the controversy damaged Nicolson’s political career.

Their company became part of Orion Publishing Group in 1992. Nicolson died in 2004, but Weidenfeld remained active with the company until the end of his life.

Weidenfeld & Nicolson was named “Imprint of the Year” at the Bookseller Awards in 2015, providing a fitting testament to his long career.

Weidenfeld also was a strong supporter of Israel who for a year served as a director of the Israeli Cabinet and senior adviser to the Israeli president. Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog praised Weidenfeld for his contributions to the “well-being, security and defense of Israel and the Jewish people.”

“As a bridge-builder, he devoted all of his energy toward issues that are still as topical as ever: the dialogue between the faiths to Europe’s relationship with Israel to European integration.

He fought for values and ideals even when he faced resistance,” Steinmeier said.

Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis, said Weidenfeld showed a strong commitment to community service.

“One of Lord Weidenfeld’s last acts – rescuing Christian families from Syria and Iraq and resettling them elsewhere – exemplifies the legacy of a man we should all endeavor to replicate,” the chief rabbi said.

Weidenfeld is survived by his wife, a daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

College Football Hall of Famer Lou Michaels dies at 80 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lou Michaels, a two-time All-America tackle at Kentucky and College Football Hall of Famer, has died.

He was 80.

Michaels’ daughter, Michele Grochocki, in Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, confirmed his death Tuesday.

Michaels had pancreatic cancer, she said.

Michaels was an Associated Press All-American first team selection in 1956 and ’57 during the era of one-platoon football. Besides playing on the offensive and defensive lines, he was also a placekicker and punter for the Wildcats.

Kentucky retired Michaels’ No. 79 jersey in 1990.

“UK Athletics has lost one of our all-time greats in the passing of Lou Michaels,” Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said in a release.

“He was an incredible competitor during a time

when players played both offense and defense.

“As a UK retired jersey honoree, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and an All-Pro player in the NFL, Lou was one of the most honored Wildcats in the history of UK football,” Barnhart said. “Our condolences go to his wife, Judy, and their children and family.”

Named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year by league coaches as a senior, Michaels finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. The No. 4 overall pick in the 1958 NFL draft played for the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Colts and Green Bay Packers in a 13-year pro career.

Michaels was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

He also was named AllPro in 1962 and 1963 while with the Steelers.

Italian director Ettore Scola dies at age 84 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROME – Ettore Scola, one of the last greats of Italian film, has died at age 84.

RAI state radio and the ANSA news agency say Scola died late Tuesday at a Rome hospital after falling ill on Sunday.

Scola, who started out as a screenwriter, Ettore Scola won best director in 1976 at the Cannes Film Festival for “Brutti, Sporchi, Cattivi” (“Ugly, Dirty and Bad”).

But he was perhaps best known for “We All Loved Each Other So Much,” his 1977 tableau about post-war Italy, and the Oscar-nominated “A Special Day” featuring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren as neighbors who meet during Hitler’s visit to Italy in 1938.

Premier Matteo Renzi said Scola had an incomparable way of reading Italian society and said in a tweet that his death “leaves an enormous hole in Italian culture.”

We Care’s first Grundy mobile pantry of 2016 SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The first Mobile Pantry of 2016 recently was hosted and sponsored

by First Christian Church of Morris at 455 W. Southmor Road in Morris.

It was a cold night for the mobile pantry, but the First Christian Church offered to move the pantry indoors to its gymnasium, where it set up tables and chairs so volunteers and guests could take shelter from the elements.

We Care members expressed thanks to the First Christian Church for its help and sponsorship as well as for providing use of its indoor space.

During the pantry event, 144 people were served from a delivery of 8,531 pounds of food.

Each household received about 59 pounds of food, which included pudding mix, green beans, Uncle Ben’s rice cups, diced tomatoes, assorted meats and cheeses, Arby’s Jalapeno Hushpuppies, fresh baby carrots, fresh potatoes, Oscar Meyer chicken and ham and brioche buns.

“This is really a great program. The first year that it had started, Chuck Richardson stood at the pulpit and announced that he wanted to sponsor two trucks in the coming year,” said Margie Weber, of First Christian Church in Morris. “Through special offering, we ended up having enough money to do three or four trucks, and we have been doing it ever since.

It’s a wonderful idea and has been very successful.”

We Care of Grundy County provides a mobile pantry each month that is available for anyone who resides in Grundy County and is in need of food with no restrictions on household income.

Seneca wrestlers outlast Putnam County

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com SENECA – In a wrestling match that lasts for only three two-minute periods, every second and every point is important.

The Seneca wrestling team was a prime example of that Wednesday night in a 37-30 nonconference win over a Putnam County-Spring Valley Hall coop team.

“Our guys found out why we do conditioning drills,” Seneca coach Todd Yegge said.

“We had a lot of matches go pretty deep. I was proud of the way our guys kept working at scoring points.”

Late in the match, Seneca freshman Jace Casey, a firstyear wrestler, matched up with Putnam County’s Kyle Leitner in the 126-pound bout. Casey and Leitner were tied at 9-all late in the third period when Casey was able to escape Leitner and get to his feet, making the score 10-9 with about 15 seconds left. Casey then fought off Leitner’s best attempts at a takedown and held on for the win, making the score 37-24.

Those points proved to be important when, in the night’s final match, Seneca’s Kyle Sigmon was disqualified for slamming Putnam County’s Jimmy Hewitt, giving six points to Putnam County.

“That win by Jace Casey was huge for us,” Yegge said.

“First of all, he’s a first-year wrestler and has been working real hard for us. Then he got the winning point on the escape late and didn’t let his guy take him down in the final seconds. Those three team points that we got and they didn’t were huge when Kyle slammed his guy.

“That slam was just one of those things. He didn’t mean to do it, but he got his guy on a double-leg takedown and the guy got in an odd position. But Kyle knows he can’t let himself get in that position, so we have to learn from that and move on.”

6-0 Fighting Irish lead. Colt Aldrich then picked up a forfeit win for Seneca for a 12-0 advantage. Putnam County’s Luke McCook pinned Mason Dooley to make it 12-6 before Anthony Hasse scored a 12-1 major decision over Joe Berg at 170 to put Seneca ahead, 166.

Anthony Sams followed that up by notching a pin over Nick Bouxsein in 4:45 for a 22-6

lead after he held a 17-4 advantage early in the third period.

Hunter McAlpine led Putnam County’s Evan Kiphart, 4-0, after the first period of the 195-pound bout, but Kiphart escaped to start the second round, took down McAlpine and scored a pin in 3:02 to pull Putnam County to within 2212. Seneca then had to forfeit to Eric Cissell at 220 and Ellian Rivera at 285, allowing Putnam County to take a 24-22 lead.

Following double forfeits at both 106 and 113, Seneca’s Jackson Beene pinned Chris Enriquez at 120 to put the Irish ahead for good at 28-24. Tyler Draine then won by forfeit at 126, setting up Casey’s pivotal match.

“Our numbers are a little down this year, so we give up a few forfeits every match,” Yegge said. “It can be tough to behind an 18-point deficit every match. But the guys that are out there are doing a good job of scoring points.

“Anthony Sams had a good match and scored a lot of points before he wore his guy down and pinned him.

We preach for the guys to stay on the attack. That’s how you score points and they have done a good job of that.

“Now, we just need to work on finishing some of our attacks. We were a little sloppy on some tonight, but we will try to get that cleaned up these next couple of weeks before regionals.”

STAFF REPORTS LaSALLE – Beating an undefeated basketball team on its own floor is hard enough.

Sometimes it takes a miracle.

There were no miracles for the Morris boys basketball team Tuesday night, as senior guard Jordan Miracle was out due to illness as the Redskins took on Northern Illinois Big 12 rival LaSalle-Peru.

Despite 15 points from junior Matt Shaw and 10 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Tyler Spiezio, Morris suffered a 48-34 defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers, who remained unbeaten on the season.

Morris (8-10, 1-5) returns to action Friday night with a NIB 12 home game against Sycamore.

LaSalle-Peru sophomores 42, Morris 37: Kameron Dransfeldt led Morris (8-9, 1-5) with 15 points, while Jared Lines scored seven and Payton Voitik added six.

Seneca 65, Plano 64: The Fighting Irish had their biggest offensive output of the year, and needed every bit of it to hold off Plano for the Interstate Eight Conference win. In bridge, solving a bidding problem will give you a goal, the number of tricks needed to make or break the contract.

In this deal, South is in four spades.

West leads the club ace, and East correctly drops the queen to show the queen and jack. (It could not be a singleton queen here.) When West continues with a low club, East wins with his 10 and shifts to the heart nine.

How should South try to attain his goal of 10 tricks?

This deal features a secondary problem. If you were North, what would you respond after partner opens one spade, and West makes a takeout double?

Over West’s double, North might jump to four spades. This is a slight underbid, but it could keep the opponents out of the auction, and a slam is unlikely given West’s double. North’s alternative is to respond two no-trump, which shows at least game-invitational values with four or more trumps. Here, South would rebid four spades.

At first glance, declarer needs to take a winning heart finesse or to find the diamond queen.

But actually the contract is guaranteed. South should win the third trick with the heart ace, draw trumps, and exit with a heart. Whichever defender takes the trick (here, West) must either lead a diamond, finding the queen for declarer; or concede a ruff-and-sluff, allowing South to ruff on the board and discard a diamond from his hand. Problem solved and goal achieved.

Research lacking on health advantages of organic foods Dear Dr. K: Many of my friends buy only organic foods.

But are they really healthier than non-organic?

Dear Reader: Organic crops are grown without most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic animal products are free of antibiotics and hormones. Many people believe these foods are better for them. But we really don’t know they are.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture regulates the organic industry with strict standards. The soil where crops are grown must be inspected and shown to be free of most manmade pesticides and fertilizers. The crops cannot be genetically modified. Animals raised on organic farms receive no antibiotics or growth

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff hormones. They are given feed that has been grown organically. And they are able to roam around outside. Processed organic foods cannot contain synthetic additives. Only foods that are 95 percent organic are certified with a “USDA Organic” seal.

There have been several studies comparing the nutritional content of organic and non-organic foods. They have found foods grown either way are quite similar in terms of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates.

According to the USDA,

organic foods have fewer pesticide residues than conventionally grown foods. But the amounts of pesticide residues in non-organic food fall within the level for safe consumption.

Similarly, we don’t have enough information yet for a verdict on animal products.

Does the lack of hormones and antibiotics in organic animal products make them healthier? We don’t know.

I spoke with registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

If you do want to go organic, McManus suggests starting with produce. Try buying organic versions of foods on the “Dirty Dozen” list. This

annual list reveals which conventionally grown foods are most likely to contain pesticide residues. This year’s list includes apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, snap peas, spinach, strawberries and sweet bell peppers. All of these should be washed before you consume them, even if they are organically grown.

Fruits and vegetables that typically do not appear on the Dirty Dozen list are those that have a thick skin that is removed before eating. By removing the skin or peel, you also remove most of the pesticide residue. As a result, it’s less important it be organic.

Examples of the “Clean 15” include bananas, avocados,

grapefruit and eggplant.

Why don’t we know if organic foods are healthier?

Such a study would be very hard to conduct. The research team would have to recruit thousands of people. Those people would be assigned at random to either eat organic foods or not. They would have to follow their assignment every day, for many years.

Then there’s the expense.

Such a study would cost tens of millions of dollars. And, in my opinion, the U.S. government already is not providing sufficient funding for medical research.
