By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – District 54 interim Superintendent Al Gegenheimer on Tuesday night during the regular school board meeting discussed the idea of consolidating students from Shabbona Middle School and White Oak Elementary School into one building.

He presented information to the board, staff and public, who had seen the information at a Committee of the Whole meeting earlier this month.

“There has been some discussion in the community, so I wanted to share with the community what we’ve been discussing,” Gegenheimer said.

“To be honest, the board has been exploring this even before this current board was seated.”

He said the first thing the district needed to do was look at the feasibility of consolidating Shabbona Middle and White Oak Elementary into a single building – at this point, discussion has been centered on the idea of moving them all to White Oak – that served students in pre-K through eighth grade.

He said questions that need to be answered include what enrollment projections are, would there be enough classroom space, and would it cost money

Gegenheimer said the district can expect to enroll about 1,200 students annually, a number it’s been at or around for 25 years.

The two buildings the district owns and operates can hold 2,100 students. White Oak Elementary was built to hold between 1,400 to 1,500 students.

Gegenheimer said a building consolidation study was presented to the district in November that showed there is room to hold pre-kindergarten through fifth grade on the first floor, while sixth through eighth

He warned that the issue is how to arrange for 1,200 students to get in the gym for physical education and how to feed that many students in one building.

“We don’t want students eating from 9:30 in the morning until 2:30,” Gegenheimer said.

“That is a deal-breaker.”

Gegenheimer showed those in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting the financial projections that require the district to look at ways to save money.

He said 80 percent to 90 percent of the district’s expenses are tied to salaries and benefits,

and the remaining 10 percent to 20 percent is spent on everything from Band-Aids to paper clips.

Gegenheimer said the district’s revenue source is primarily property taxes, and with bonds coming due that were used to pay for the White Oak School, the district will be operating at a deficit, which will push property rates up.

He pointed out that the tax rate in 2008 was $3.01 for each $100 of owned property. In 2014 the tax rate was at $3.46, it’s projected that with debts owed the tax rate will be at $4.22 by 2018.

Public comment was reopened after his presentation.

Arthur Hornsby thanked the board for taking a hard look at the numbers.

Parents in attendance shared concerns about why they were just finding out about the issues.

They also asked if the district could be ready to consolidate by the 2016-17 school year.

“We are bound and determined to make it feasible by next year,” Gegenheimer said.

“It will not be ideal.”

One parent asked whether they were all on board with the consolidation.

Flutterby Gourmet Popcorn moves to Morris after fire at Utica store

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Becki Serrato and John Kabelis didn’t have an elaborate plan to bring their successful Flutterby Gourmet Popcorn shop, formerly based in Utica, to Morris.

But a couple of things pointed them 34 miles east on Interstate 80.

The first was a residential move to Morris, and the second was a fire in the building next to their Utica store that caused enough damage that they no longer could operate there.

“I think [the fire] might have been a blessing in disguise,” Serrato said.

At the time of the fire, the small Utica store was filled completely, and they had just discussed the prospects of selling their popcorn wholesale.

There was a stretch after the fire when they considered not opening a new store at all, but when they received significant positive feedback online and in person, they decided to pursue a store in Morris.

The Morris shop was open for business by September, meeting the co-owners’ goal of opening before the Grundy County Corn Festival.

“We had a great turnout at Corn Festival and during the holidays,” Kabelis said.

Tuesday was the official grand opening and ribbon-cutting for the new store at 621 Liberty St. in downtown Morris. The Grundy County Chamber of Commerce was on hand, as was Mayor Richard Kopczick, who cut both the ribbon and a cake commemorating the day.

Serrato said she knew downtown Morris was vibrant, and about four months later the couple have grown to love their new location. They said they’re part of a diverse group of businesses.

Morris to up cybersecurity defenses Plans include security policy that costs $7,183 for $2 million insurance

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris and its residents will be protected through cybersecurity insurance.

Morris City Council voted, 7-0, Tuesday night to approve the purchase of a $2 million cybersecurity policy from HCC Insurance Group at an annual cost of $7,183. Alderman Sid Nelson was absent.

asked the Finance Committee how the $2 million was decided on and what it entails.

Alderman Bill Martin said that the committee discussed a $1 million policy, but decided that for only $1,800 more, it was better to have twice the coverage.

If the city’s information were ever to be hacked into, it would be required to notify residents three times through both the radio and newspaper of a security breach, in addi-

tion to sending them letters, Mayor Richard Kopczick said last week. Martin said it would cost around $250,000 to notify all residents through the required methods, not counting potential lawsuits.

“It’s a new coverage in the industry, but it’s becoming more apparent that it’s necessary,” HCC Insurance Group’s Doug Bruyn said.

Larson asked whether the city could be sued if its information were to be hacked.

Bruyn said yes and that not only does the policy protect the city, but also the people who reside in it.

“It’s really the fastest-growing insurance product out

there,” Bruyn said.

Martin said it’s not a matter of if there will be a cybersecurity breach, but when, according to the presentation HCC made to the committee. Bruyn noted examples of claims reaching close to $400,000.

In other insurance news, the council voted, 7-0, to approve Morris Airport Committee Chairman Alderman Julian Houston’s recommendation to buy liability

insurance for Morris Municipal Airport through Northern Insurance Group at an annual cost of $13,776.

Larson asked whether it was an increased price. Houston replied that it wasn’t and that if the city accepts the price, it can get the same price again next year.

Kopczick said the plan includes $20 million in liability insurance and $5 million in hangar insurance.

Progress in Bowers homicide cold case

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Significant progress has been made in the investigation into the homicide of 17-year-old Nicole L. Bowers, of Morris, according to Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

The case was reopened last year.

On the night of Aug. 2, 2000, Bowers was watching TV when her mother went to bed, but wasn’t home when she woke up the next morning at their apartment in the 1200 block of Alicia Drive.

Police said at the time the teen was a “habitual runaway” who regularly spent the night at a boyfriend’s house.

Investigators became suspicious after several days passed and Bowers, who had not taken any personal items, did not contact relatives.

On May 9, 2003, a surveyor found part of Bowers’ skull in a field near Bungalow and Gun Club roads in Channahon while the Utility Concrete facility was being con-

structed.

The site is about 2 miles from where Bowers lived.

Bowers’ identity was confirmed from dental records.

“This case for 14 years was stagnant,” Helland said.

“It was opened again last February when I asked Channahon Police Nicole Department to see the reports.

Bowers Once I looked at the reports I felt there were several leads that needed to be followed.”

He said when he spoke to Channahon police, they found several leads themselves that they thought should be followed up on.

Since that time, Helland said Channahon detectives have followed up on several leads and the investigation has gone nationwide.

“Witnesses have been interviewed outside of Illinois,” Helland said. “Additional witnesses outside of the state have yet to be interviewed but will be in the

coming months.”

Helland said detectives have been following cold case investigation protocol and believe they are close to solving the crime.

“Several new witnesses have been identified and interviewed for the first time resulting in relevant information,” Helland said. “This has helped us identify the targets of the investigation.

The targets of the investigation know who they are, this isn’t a surprise to them.”

Helland said witnesses are still being interviewed and he anticipates once all the leads are followed, there will be an arrest.

“There are still close friends and family members that we know have relevant information from the targets of the investigation in this case that have not yet come forward,” Helland said. “We are asking them to come forward at this time.”

Helland said he can not predict when an arrest will be made, but said detectives have never been closer to an arrest than they are today.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon police are now trained to use Narcan, a medication that can stop or reverse the effects of a heroin or other opioid overdose, and supplies of the drug are expected to be dispersed within the department by the end of the week.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold told village trustees at a meeting Monday that by working with Morris Hospital, the department was able to procure the Narcan doses earlier than expected.

Fatal drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury death in the United States, surpassing deaths from mo-

tor vehicle crashes, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

When Narcan is administered to someone who has overdosed on an opioid, it can counter the overdose effects within two minutes.

After the meeting, Wold said there is a need for the medicine, even though Channahon is not seeing great numbers of heroin overdoses.

When paramedics and police arrive at the scene of an overdose, the paramedics take the responsibility of treatment.

However, once or twice a year, an officer is the first to arrive.

Wold remembers one in-

cident a couple of years ago when an officer drove up to a car parked alongside the road and found a man passed out inside with a needle in his arm. He had overdosed on heroin.

Channahon officers have already trained to administer the medication, as Trustee Chantal Host reported in November. The Illinois State Police led a training session in Channahon, and the Morris Police Department trained the remaining Channahon officers who were not able to attend the initial session.

Wold said the department bought $350 of Narcan from Morris Hospital.

The medication has a three-year shelf life. It will be

distributed among the detective unit, the police station and every squad car on the road.

In other police business Monday, trustees approved continuing an intergovernmental agreement allowing the Will County Sheriff’s Office to handle warrant entry, service and transportation of prisoners for Channahon at an annual cost to the village of $3,369.

The term of the contract is three years.

Wold also told the Village Board that he would schedule a speaker to attend a board meeting in the near future to discuss the department possibly upgrading police radios from analog to digital.

The cost will be considerable, Wold said, but since the radio bandwidth was cut in half, reception has not been ideal.

Also Monday, the board approved creating an additional Class I liquor license for the village.

The license, which allows beer and wine sales, could be assigned to a business, Lacey’s Place, which wishes to locate at 27025 W. Eames St. Representatives from the business attended the meeting and said the beer and wine bar would also have deli sandwiches and a back room with five video gaming machines.

The facility would be for those ages 21 and up.

Grundy to survey on tobacco-free park idea

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department is asking residents their opinion on tobacco use in Morris parks as the department moves forward with tobacco-free initiatives.

“The Tobacco-Free Illinois Grant the Grundy County Health Department received requires us to look at initiatives like tobacco-free parks,” said Paula Goodwin of the No Tolerance Task Force. “We are doing the survey first to get data to see if people are interested.”

The survey, which is being hosted online at SurveyMonkey, also is available in a paper format at the Morris Area Public Library and consists of eight questions and one comment section asking people their thoughts on keeping tobacco products out of city parks.

Goodwin said a lot of parks in the northeastern Illinois region have already moved forward with tobacco-free initiatives and there are ordinances in place in some parts of the region that make it illegal to have tobacco products, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes and vaporizers in a park.

“Lake County is one of the first counties to go tobacco-free in their parks,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin has been working side-by-side with Laura Wells at the health department to determine what steps to take next.

“We are taking baby steps and we have to be careful how we move forward,” Goodwin said.

Wells, who checks on food service in the county to make sure codes are being followed, said keeping tobacco completely out of the parks may be hard to enforce. She said that when she is checking food booths

That is hard to enforce, but we try to nip it in the bud when we see it.”

She feels the same challenges may be faced at local parks.

Goodwin said what they’d like to see initially is no-smoking areas near stands or athletic fields, playground equipment and other areas frequented by children.

It already is illegal to smoke on school grounds in Illinois, and Goodwin said people have been complaining of smoking at school events.

The grant will provide money needed to post signs in areas determined to be tobacco free if the community shows enough interest, and could help provide places to dispose of cigarettes when they are extinguished.

As of Tuesday, the group had about 100 responses to the survey but they’d like to have at least 1,000 to have a clearer idea of the interests of residents.

When the semi overturned, it spilled a load of salt on the ramp, and some fuel leaked out of the saddle tanks, Vancine said, although not enough for the leak to classify as a hazardous material spill.

The ramp reopened at 1:25 p.m., Vancine said, and as of midafternoon Tuesday, no charges were pending and the investigation was ongoing.

No injuries were reported.

The disorder is experienced during late fall or early winter, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It wears off when the weather becomes sunnier in the spring and summer.

The symptoms of fall and winter SAD – people can experience it other seasons – include irritability, tiredness, oversleeping, weight gain and social problems.

Mental health experts in Will and Grundy counties cite several remedies and resources for people whose sensitivity to the winter season extends beyond cold temperatures.

If SAD symptoms are severe enough, people can benefit from antidepressant treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Hudson said that during winter, some don’t want to go out, and are isolated and experience reduced social contact with others.

The loneliness can cause depression, and she recommends those people either keep contact with friends and families or join a support group, which doesn’t have to be for SAD. They also can join online support groups, too, she said. If the support is not enough, she said they may need counseling.

For counseling, people can visit Catholic Charities, which serves Joliet and Morris, she said.

Eagles co-founder, ‘Take It Easy’ singer Glenn Frey dies

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Glenn Frey, a rock ’n’ roll rebel from Detroit who journeyed West, co-founded the Eagles and with Don Henley formed one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” has died.

Frey, 67, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said on its website.

He died Monday in New York. He had fought the ailments for the past several weeks, the band said.

“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide,” a statement on the band’s website said.

Frey’s health problems, including diverticulitis, dated to the 1980s.

Henley said crossing paths with Frey in 1970 “changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet.”

Their popularity well outlasted their breakup in 1980 and the 14-year hiatus that followed.

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan.

Add onion, carrot and bay leaf; cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.

Add garlic and cook, stirring, 1 to 2 minutes.

The road to state won’t involve a lot of travel if the Coalers are to return. They host their own 10-team regional in Class 1A on Saturday, Feb. 6, featuring Reed-Custer, Chicago Military Academy Bronzeville, Chicago Harper, Chicago Phillips, Chicago Richards, Chicago Robeson, Chicago TEAM Englewood, Plano and Wilmington and, should they move on as a team, will only have to travel to Wilmington for their sectional. The individual sectional will also be on a familiar site at Plano, an Interstate Eight Conference rival school where they won the team sectional last year.

Also in Class 1A, Seneca

hosts a nine-team regional including teams from Amboy, Ashton-Franklin Center, Mendota, Ottawa Marquette, St. Bede, Princeton, Rock Falls and Sterling Newman. The individual sectional will be at Princeton and the dual team sectional at Sterling Newman.

Minooka currently has 160-pounder Carson Oughton in the state rankings, although he wrestled at 170 at the Illini Classic at Lincoln-Way East and finished second and teammate Kenny Kirkland took second at 160.

The Indians aren’t currently ranked as a team in Class 3A, but with the return of coach Bernie Ruettiger, no one will be surprised if they make some noise when the postseason begins. The Indians are in the nine-team Bradley-Bourbonnais Regional along with Bradley-Bourbonnais, East Moline United, Moline, Normal Community West, Normal Community, Plainfield South, Rock Island and Yorkville.

They feed into the Bolingbrook individual sectional and a dual team sectional site as yet to be determined.

Much of the talk during the winter sports season is focused on basketball, both boys and girls.

However, in recent years, many of the greatest success stories while the snow is on the ground has come from area wrestling teams. Minooka had a nice run a few years back by winning a state title and placing second a couple of times, while Coal City went to state and finished third last season.

There have also been state champions and medal winners from Morris, Minooka, Seneca and Coal City.

With that in mind, we take a look at the state of area wrestling as the postseason draws nearer.

In Morris, Cody Baldridge has emerged as one of the state’s top 182-pound wrestlers. Baldridge entered last weekend’s’ Illini Classic at Lincoln-Way East with a 22-4 record and finished second. He lost a 3-2 decision in the finals to Schaumburg’s Tony Vezzetti, who is currently ranked No. 7 in Class 3A by illinoismatmen. com. Baldridge and Morris will take part in the nine-team Lincoln-Way West Regional, along with Putnam County, Joliet Catholic Academy, LaSalle-Peru, Manteno, Lincoln-Way West, Ottawa, Sandwich and Streator. That regional feeds into the Washington individual sectional and LaSalle-Peru dual team sectional.

Coal City is currently ranked third in Class 1A with a 23-1 record, behind only defending state champion Dakota and unbeaten Byron. The Coalers have finished first at the Plano Tournament and the St. Thomas More Dual Tournament and finished second at the Princeton Invitational.

The Coal City lineup is loaded with ranked wrestlers, starting with defending state 106-pound champion Joey Rivera, who is currently second at 113. Freshman Alex Friddle, who won an IESA state title as an eighth-grader last season, is ranked sixth at 106 this year. aarkush@chicagofootball.com The Pro Football Writers of America 2015 All-Rookie team includes a pair of Bears in Eddie Goldman and Adrian Amos.

Goldman, the second-round nose guard from Florida State, tallied 4.5 sacks, which led the Bears defensive line and ranked third among all NFL rookies. Goldman made 12 starts, playing in 50.1 percent of Chicago’s defensive snaps, second among Bears D-linemen.

Amos, the fifth-round Penn State product, paced the Bears defense in tackles (108) and snaps (1,027), including playing every down since Week 4, according to coaches’ film review. Amos added four pass breakups, one tackle for loss and one sack.

Coal City girls use strong start to defeat Sandwich STAFF REPORTS SANDWICH – A 7-1 second quarter helped propel the Coal City girls basketball team into a 19-7 halftime lead Monday against Interstate Eight Conference rival Sandwich, and the Lady Coalers (9-11, 5-3) held off the Indians for a 40-31 victory.

Taylor Meents went 3 of 5 from the 3-point line and finished with a team-high 11 points to lead Coal City’s offense, while Mackenzie Bugg and Bridget Kauzlaric each scored eight points.

“We had a strong first half, and we were able to withstand a run by Sandwich in the second half,” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “I hope this helps us as we enter into the Interstate Eight Tournament.”

I always said to myself, ‘Taking this flight saves enough money to rescue six cats, or four dogs, or will let me make a difference to the one woman saving chimps in Cameroon.’”

Strangely, mine was that I did not realize dogs are more expensive pets than cats. But this column concerns opener’s bidding of a 6-4 hand, six in a major and four in a minor. In today’s deal, look at the South hand. You open one spade, and partner responds two clubs. Would you rebid two diamonds or two spades?

Some players advise rebidding in the six-card major with a minimum opening, but mentioning the fourcard minor with extra values. This is debatable.

Recently, I have seen two deals where the major-suit rebid resulted in an excellent club fit being missed.

Agreed, if you do not have an eightcard fit anywhere and partner is weak, rebidding in the six-card suit will be best, but why be so pessimistic?

In this deal, South should have rebid two diamonds. Then surely North-South would have reached six diamonds, in which South would have taken one spade, three hearts, two diamonds, four clubs and a ruff in each hand.

At the table, South rebid three spades, a bad overbid with the club void. North used Roman Key Card Blackwood, then signed off in five spades when two key cards (two aces, or one ace and the spade king) were missing. West led the diamond five, after which South had to lose one diamond and two spades.

When he is finally released from prison, one of the conditions may be that he must have no contact with minors.

And if by then your children are no longer minors, one can only hope that they have become mature enough to protect themselves emotionally – and physically, if necessary – from their father.
