County burglaries charged MORRIS HERALD–NEWS GRUNDY COUNTY – A woman has been charged in a series of daytime residential burglaries that Grundy County sheriff’s deputies have been investigating, according to a news release from the sher- Gretchen iff’s office.

L. Franc Gretchen L. Franc, 39, of Manteno, was arrested Friday in Willowbrook driving a white Jeep Wran-

gler. Grundy County deputies were conducting surveillance on Franc after identifying her as a suspect in the burglaries.

Deputies followed her to Willowbrook, where they observed activities consistent with a possible residential burglary. After confirming a home was burglarized, the Jeep Wrangler was stopped and Franc was taken into custody, the news release stated.

Franc is being held in the DuPage County jail on one count of residential burglary in connection to burglaries that occurred in Grundy, DuP-

D-54 to discuss idea of combining two schools

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris School District 54 is looking at ways to save money, and one of the options up for discussion is combining White Oak Elementary and Shabbona Middle School into one building.

Board President Jerry White said Monday night the board is looking to the financial future of the district while considering combining all 1,200 students to the White Oak Elementary School.

“We’re looking at ways to save money because of our finances,” White said. “White Oak is designed to hold 1,500 students, and the district currently has 1,200 students between the two campuses.”

White said the idea is just that – an idea – but the board is looking into the option.

“We have lot of empty classrooms, and we have the space for it,” White said.

White said the board previously had gotten bids on upgrading and fixing the Shabbona Middle School building, but

he’d prefer to spend the $2 million estimated cost elsewhere if combining the school campuses makes more sense. He said he’s hoping someone would be interested in renting out the middle school, but even the cost savings by cutting operating costs from combining the two schools would make a difference.

The board will seek community input on the combining of the schools and it is set to be discussed at the school board meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at 2001 DuPont Ave.

MORRIS – Morris police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred Sunday afternoon at Citgo in Morris.

Deputy Chief John Severson said police were called at 3:08 p.m. to the Citgo at 303 E. Washington St., where a man produced a handgun and robbed the store of an undetermined amount of cash.

“He made efforts to hide his identity,” Severson said Monday. “They have been actively working the case since the call came in and they are following up on leads today.”

No one was hurt in the robbery and the offender is still at large.

• Nicholas A. Arias, 21, of Diamond, was arrested Sunday by Morris police on a charge of possession of 2.5 to 10 grams of marijuana.

He was given a Feb. 22 court date.

• Darius M. Bolela, 27, of Florida, was arrested Friday

by Morris police on a Duval County, Florida warrant for a charge of domestic battery by strangulation. While Bolela’s semitrailer was stuck in the mud at 7700 N. Ashley Road, a computer check showed the warrant from Florida. He was processed at the Morris Police Department, then transported to the Grundy County Jail to await extradition to Florida.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan credits the arrest to assistance from the public, which provided tips to detectives, and the cooperation of law enforcement, including the Willowbrook, Manteno and Braidwood police departments.

Morris family nears move-in day for Habitat home

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When her now 8-year-old son Bryson was born, Shanna Enger – a lifelong Morris resident – thought it might be in her family’s best interest to pursue home ownership.

About a year ago, Bryson put the process in motion as he came home from White Oak Elementary School with a flier about Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership program. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing organization that seeks to eliminate poverty by providing simple homes for low-income fami-

lies.

The Engers applied for the Grundy-Three Rivers program, which was seeking to build its 12th home overall and its fourth of five at the Hancock Page subdivision in the 900 block of East North Street in Morris.

The hope for a new home grew as the family drove past the neighborhood during the application process, each of them noticing how nice the houses looked.

After an informational meeting, a stack of paperwork and several in-person interviews, Shanna Enger said the family learned last spring they had been approved for the home. They broke ground in

May 2015 and hope to close by the end of the month.

Shanna Enger, who has worked for 17 years at R-Place Restaurant, said it was surprising how everything has come full circle. Until now, she has raised her two children – Bridget, 12, and Bryson – in a second-floor, two-bedroom apartment where Bridget and Bryson share a bedroom.

“We fit what they were looking for, but when you consider how many people apply I wondered if we would be picked,” she said.

According to a Grundy-Three Rivers news release, Habitat partner families must present a need for adequate housing and earn 30 to 60

percent of the area’s median income. Credit checks are performed. Partner families contribute 400 hours of “sweat equity” toward the construction of their home and Habitat fundraising events. The homes are then sold with a no-interest mortgage, making home ownership affordable.

Mortgage payments help fund future Habitat homes.

Grundy-Three Rivers Executive Director Sarah Peterson said the work done by each family is a great contribution, especially in this case, because Bridget and Bryson were old enough to understand the importance of it.

MORRIS – Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity has scheduled informational meetings for families interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner.

A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 at Morris Hospital in Whitman Room 1, 150 W. High St. in Morris Another meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 6 at the Coal City Library, 85 N. Garfield St. in Coal City.

Volunteers will give a one-hour presentation on the Habitat for Humanity program and application process.

Attendance at one of the meetings is required to obtain an application.

To be chosen for a home, families must meet a minimum of three criteria: 1) Need for a permanent home, such as living with a family member or renting a crowded or unsafe apartment 2) Ability to pay a no-interest mortgage, earning 30 to 60 percent of the median income for Grundy County

“I’ve always acted in the taxpayers’ best interest,” Halpin said. “Whether it’s Law and Justice or any other committee, I can handle the position of vice chairman with the knowledge needed to make decisions that are in the best interest of the county.”

Geiger, who also spoke out at the meeting, said Friday her concerns are that when a chairman is not present, the vice chairman runs the meeting, and although there still is a grievance, she isn’t sure it is the best ethical decision to place Halpin in that role.

“I understand innocent until proven guilty and I stand behind the board’s decision, but I question if the public will have concerns when we still have unresolved issues with Mr. Halpin,” Geiger said.

Welter said Monday he stands by his decision to place Halpin in the role of vice chairman.

“Before the committee re-

structure in December, Frank was sitting as vice chairman and no one brought concerns to me,” Welter said. “I understand the board members’ concerns.”

He said there has been nothing filed with the Ethics Committee that oversees the board and there has been no finding in the civil case.

“He will be treated like any other board member with the same amount of seniority,” Welter said.

Halpin has been on the board since 1994. He is a resident of Gardner and represents District 3. The new structure will add Martin to three committees: Health/Education, Legislative/VAC and Technology/Elections.

CHANNAHON – Just a couple years ago, a half-dozen dilapidated old homes and outbuildings along the DuPage River in Channahon Township were all that was left of a once-vibrant summer resort.

The obscure little road named Chanooka Lane starts behind Channahon’s Three Rivers School on Ford Road, winds by the river and merges with Timberwood Lane.

Now all the homes are gone – some destroyed by fires or ravaged by flooding – and the short gravel lane overgrown with grass looks like it has always been just a walking path.

The few homes and outbuildings that remained until recently were purchased by the Will County Land Use Department as part of a $5.1 million grant designed to aid areas hit hard by the 2008

MORRIS – The Grundy County Board has made changes to its 10 committees because of the resignation of board member John Galloway.

Galloway was assigned to three committees and was vice chairman of the Finance Committee.

After his replacement, Mireya Martin, was voted in Jan. 12, changes to the committees also needed to take place, according to board Chairman David Welter.

“I had to evaluate where to best put the new board member,” Welter said. “Galloway had been with the board a long time, and held a more senior position. I had to move people around to make it fair. I wouldn’t put a new member in the position of chairman or vice chairman.”

The recommended changes sparked comments from board members Debra Warning and

Vicki Geiger during the meeting. The concern was placing board member Frank Halpin in the position of vice chairman of the Law and Justice/ EMA Committee.

Warning, who voiced the first concern, said Monday she spoke up because she doesn’t believe Halpin always acts in the best interest of the voters.

“It strikes me as ironic that the vice chairman is someone the County Board is suing,” Warning said. “He doesn’t act in the best interest of the board when he accepts pay he’s not entitled to.”

Warning was referring to a civil case the county filed in September 2013 against Halpin that alleges Halpin misappropriated from the county at least $40,000, and seeks the recoupment of all wages and benefits Halpin received during his breach of duties from 2008 to 2013, at least $200,000.

Lions Club sponsors first We Care expansion truck How to help

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Lions Club came Jan. 15 to We Care of Grundy County for the first Fill-the-Pantry of the new year.

The Morris Lions Club is one of several local businesses, churches and organizations that have joined We Care in an effort to increase the monthly food truck deliveries to the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

We Care has increased the delivery schedule from one truck a month to two since announcing the opening of the pantry to anyone in Grundy County who is in need of food and whose income meets the guideline of being 200 percent of poverty level or below.

We Care relies on help and support from Grundy County businesses, churches and

what it does.

Many of the Fill-the-Pantry slots are filled for 2016, though there are still openings available in the fall.

The cost to sponsor a Fill-the-Pantry is $750 and We Care requests five volunteers come the day of the delivery and help stock the shelves.

In addition to increasing the number of food deliveries, We Care would like to add more shelves to the pantry itself, and is seeking donations to help in the purchase of those shelves.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include Morris Hospital, the First Presbyterian Church of Morris and LyondellBasell.

How can this be?

The discovery in 1928 of an accidental mold contamination in one of scientist Alexander Fleming’s petri dish bacterial cultures led to decades of lives saved by antibiotics.

Fleming discovered penicillin, a chemical produced by the mold Penicillium notatum that saved generations from being overcome by bacterial infections and led to the discovery of dozens more antimicrobial agents.

However Fleming, in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize, warned of bacterial resistance.

“Then there is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself,” Fleming wrote, “and by exposing his microbes to non-lethal quantities of the drug make them resistant.”

They normally go away on their own, Bolden said.

But doctors still are prescribing antibiotics without taking cultures to determine if an infection is truly a bacterial one, and patients still are demanding them.

“Physicians feel they’re

According to the CDC, bacterial resistance comes about through natural selection.

Bacteria do not “design” ways to get around an antibiotic.

When a patient doesn’t take a full dose of the medicine or quits it early, the weak bacteria are killed, and the strong ones survive, creating generations of super-bacteria.

So when their bacterial competitors in the gut are killed off, according to the CDC, these super-bacteria have the perfect environment to thrive, and further treatment with that particular antibiotic won’t harm them.

Another major contributor to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Bolden said, is improper use of antibiotics in animals.

Poultry, beef and other meats that come from animals treated with antibiotics, he explained, may be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant germs.

“That increases your risk of getting an antibiotic-resistant infection down the road,” Bolden said.

“It was really cool,” Bridget said. “We got to see what it takes to build a house. You have to really pay attention.”

Not many children can say they’ve helped build their own home, but Bridget and Bryson can look back for the rest of their lives on the hard work needed to make home ownership a reality. Habitat for Humanity construction leaders provided guidance and taught the family how to do certain projects on their own, Shanna Enger said. Other volunteers contributed heavily, as happens with all Habitat homes.

The Engers worked on their house whenever they could.

“It was a lot of fun to help build our house,” Shanna Enger said. “I’d work on the house on my off days and bring the kids at night sometimes.”

Now they enjoy things many families may take for granted.

Shanna Enger is glad to have her own washer and dryer.

“I’m so glad we don’t have to go to the laundromat anymore,” she said. “Every week we go, I’m counting down one less week.”

Born: March 15, 1968; in Joliet, IL Died: Jan. 8, 2016; in New Port Richey, FL Jenada L. Kambic (nee Vilt), 47, of New Port Richey, Florida passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at the Hernando-Pasco Hospice Care Center in New Port Richey, Florida with her husband, sisters, and brother at her side.

Jenada was born in Joliet, Illinois on March 15, 1968. She was the fourth child, and third daughter, of Carol (Fudge) and Donald (Puggy)

Vilt. She grew up in Braceville, Illinois, attending Braceville schools, graduated from Gardner-South Wilmington High School in 1986, and attended Joliet Junior College.

Jenada was married to her husband of nearly 19 years, Daniel Kambic, on March 8, 1997, at the Little Chapel of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jenada was an amazing person, with a great sense of humor, who loved her family, her pets, music, and most of all life. She enjoyed spending time adventuring at theme parks, zoos, or anywhere the day led, as long as she was together with her family. Even when faced with adversity, her resolve remained strong, driven by

her love of family and life. Jenada touched all those she encountered in her journey with her victories, strength, kindness, humor, and always with a positive outlook and a smile, regardless of challenges at hand. Countless family members, friends, and people who crossed paths with Jenada have said she is the strongest and bravest person they had ever met.

Jenada is survived by her husband, Daniel Kambic; two sons, Blake (17) and Maxwell (14) Kambic; her parents, Donald and Carol Vilt of Braceville, IL; her siblings, Terry Dailey of Cookville, TX, Donald Vilt Jr (Sue) of Plainfield, IL, and Gina Clover (Bill) of Coal City, IL; her grandmother in-law, Carlene Kam-

bic of Joliet, IL; and nephews and nieces, Ryan Clover, Kristy Gerrish, Ross Clover, Carol Jean Klegman, Shane Lundberg, Jessica Vilt, Zachary Vilt, and Anthony Cabrera. Also survived by her many pets, Sammy, Nacho, Tyson, and Jeffery to name a few. Champion sprinter Gulch, Drummer Dale sire of Thunder Gulch, dies Griffin dies at 67 The ASSOCIATED PRESS GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Gulch, a sprint champion in the late 1980s and sire of 1995 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Thunder Gulch, has died at 32.

The horse died Sunday at Old Friends farm in Georgetown, Kentucky. Michael Blowen, president of Old

Friends, says the cause was complications from cancer.

Gulch won the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and earned the Eclipse Award for top sprinter. Gulch won 13 of 32 starts and earned more than $3 million. Among his wins were the Hopeful Stakes as a 2-yearold, the Wood Memorial as a 3-year-old and the Metropolitan Mile two years in a row.

He was trained by Hall of Famers D. Wayne Lukas and LeRoy Jolley.

A son of Mr. Prospector, his offspring earned more than $91 million. After his breeding days, Gulch was pensioned in 2009 because of declining health and was sent to Old Friends, a home for retired racehorses that draws visitors from around the country.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Dale Griffin, a drummer for British glamrock stalwarts Mott the Hoople, has died at age 67.

He died Sunday, Peter Purnell, of Mott’s label Angel Air Records, told the BBC. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a decade ago.

A native of Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, he was a founding member of the group, which took its name from a British novel of the 1960s and featured singer Ian Hunter and guitarist Mick Ralphs.

In 1972, they scored their biggest hit with the David B o w i e - p e n n e d a n d - p r oduced raucous anthem “All

the Young Dudes.”

The group’s songs also included “All the Way From Memphis” and “Roll Away the Stone.”

The band split by the mid-70s, and Griffin later worked as a producer for BBC live music sessions, with artists including Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins and Pulp.

Mott the Hoople reformed in 2009, but Griffin was already ill and appeared only during encores, his place otherwise taken by Martin Chambers, of the Pretenders.

His death comes a week after the death of Bowie, who was 69.

Foundation grants help Grundy nonprofits As I reflect on 2015, I am proud of the impact the Community Foundation of Grundy County’s grant-making has had on the local community.

The Community Foundation’s unrestricted or competitive grant program saw an increase in the number of requests for funding this year.

With so many worthy causes, it becomes difficult for our grants committee to decide which requests received funding, and which did not.

However, I believe the grants committee was able to make a huge impact in Grundy County this year with the choices made.

Our unrestricted grants program was able to provide grants to several deserving organizations serving Grundy County. Through our grant-making, the Coal City Public Library was able to purchase new furniture for its teen area and Small Town Theatrics was able to pur-

chase costumes for the “Mary Poppins” musical.

A Community Foundation grant allowed Gardner Grade School to bring Rachel’s Challenge to Gardner, South Wilmington and Braceville students and communities.

Our grant-making also allowed We Care of Grundy County to purchase a new van and Peace Lutheran Church to purchase an AED. The AED was much needed as Peace Lutheran hosts many community events and activities, including the overnight PADS shelter.

Joliet Area Hospice replaced its outdated two-way radios with new ones to enhance employee communication, efficiency and security.

Because of our grant-making the Minooka Citizen’s Police was able to purchase an AED for the Community Room within Minooka Village Hall, and Channahon Police Cadets now have bullet-resis-

tant vests to help them better serve the community.

Our grant-making also will allow Community Nutrition Network to continue to provide hot meals to senior citizens in Grundy County.

Lastly, we were able to help a new nonprofit organization, The EXibit Fine Arts Center and Gallery, with marketing costs to help spread the word that they exist. Keep your ears and eyes open for more information on The EXibit.

In addition to our unrestricted grants, the foundation has made a countless number of grants to nonprofit organizations from donor advised funds. The Community Foundation also has a Who Wants to be a Grant Maker program during monthly Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours events.

These grants are given in $100 increments to a charity of the winning individual’s choice.

This year, these $100 grants

were given to Just Animals, Grundy Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, We Care of Grundy County, Illinois Valley Industries, Living Alternative, Patriots 4 Heroes, Grundy County Historical Society, Angels of Hope and Community Nutrition Network.

At the beginning of 2015, a youth philanthropy group was created to not only educate youth on the importance of giving, but to also provide them with an opportunity to do so.

Between January and May, a group of 13 students from Seneca High School learned about several area nonprofits, then had the daunting task of deciding who would receive a grant. In the end, they gave out a total of $5,000 to four organizations: We Care of Grundy County, Seneca Food Pantry, Pet Project Inc., and Youth Service Bureau of LaSalle County.

The youth philanthropy group continues to meet the third Sunday of each month at 6 p.m. in Morris. The group is open to any high school student from Grundy County.

The Community Foundation began a new grant year with the start of 2016 and will again have $30,000 to grant to 501c3 organizations serving Grundy County residents. The Grants and Programs Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month to review grant requests.

SPORTS COLUMN Rob Oesterle More and more these days, it seems like area high school athletes are moving toward specializing in one sport or another. The proliferation of club sports and travel programs has a lot to do with this, as does the desire to earn some sort of scholarship to offset the ever-increasing cost of attending college.

Don’t get me wrong. There are still plenty of multi-sport athletes around, but the one-sport specialization has increased. And yet the funny thing is, last year, when Ohio State won the national football championship, it was shown that 42 of the 46 players in the Buckeyes’ recruiting class were multi-sport athletes.

The point I am trying to make is that playing more than one sport can definitely help an athlete, no matter what their best sport is.

Case in point, the Minooka boys basketball team.

On Friday night, the Indians took over sole possession of first place in the Southwest Prairie Conference with a convincing 65-50 win over Oswego.

Minooka is a Class 4A team – the largest classification – and coach Scott Tanaka made a telling comment while talking after the game. He said senior guard Larry Roberts is the only player on the team that will be going on to play college basketball next season.

In this day and age, you would expect a team battling for a conference title in a pretty good Class 4A league like the Southwest Prairie to be filled with guys who concentrate on basketball. That’s not the case in Minooka. They are a team full of athletes who happen to play basketball during the winter season.

Look at the starting five.

There’s Joe Butler, whom Tanaka feels is the best player in the conference and, after watching him play, it’s hard to argue. He’s going to play baseball for Illinois State next year. Center Blake Parzych

Point guard Jonny Butler is only a junior, but he also excels at football as a defensive back and will be one of the better outfielders in the area in baseball this spring.

Roberts will be taking his basketball talents to Benedictine University in Lisle, and Keegan Graebner’s future also seems to be on the hardwood, but he’s only a sophomore.

Now, take away Parzych and the two Butlers, and the Indians’ record would most likely not be 14-7 and they probably wouldn’t be leading their conference.

Bear in mind, I am not knocking playing only one sport once an athlete knows which one is his or her favorite or if their chance of playing that sport in college is a legitimate one. Heck, I did that in

high school. After being on the football team for my freshman and sophomore years and the basketball team as a sophomore, it was clear to me that neither one of those sports was

going to get me to college, nor was either Redskins program going to miss my presence on the sidelines. I do sometimes I wish I had played varsity football just so I could have

played under Dan Darlington, but even he tells me that I did the right thing for me at the time, which was concentrate on baseball.

It worked out well, as I ended up landing a partial scholarship to play baseball at Purdue. Baseball had always been my favorite sport, but it wasn’t until I was halfway done with high school that I figured it all out.

I wanted to try everything, and I was encouraged to do so as well. It seems that more often these days, parents or kids want to set their sights on one goal way too early and they may miss out on other opportunities.

Minooka boys basketball falls to hosts in Galesburg tourney STAFF REPORTS GALESBURG – Last season, the Minooka boys basketball team went to the Galesburg Tournament and defeated the then-unbeaten Silver Streaks on their own floor.

This season, Galesburg had a loss on their record, but only one, as the Indians took them on again Monday afternoon.

Minooka (14-7) again threw a big scare into the tourney hosts, holding a 10-point lead in the third quarter before the Streaks clamped down on the Indians and scored a 46-37 win.

The Indians, who opened tourney play last week with a win over Maine South, held Galesburg (19-1) to just 6 of 21 shooting in the first half en route to a 17-14 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Joe Butler and Larry Roberts hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and Butler followed with an

old-fashioned three-point play to give Minooka a 26-16 lead with 3:12 to play in the third quarter.

From then on, though, it was all Galesburg as Minooka was able to score just 11 more points in the final 11:12 of the contest.

Joe Butler led Minooka with 22 points, while Roberts scored 11. Nick Clemmons and Jonny Butler each had two points.

GRADE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Seneca 7th Boys 41, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 32: The Il-

linois Valley Conference West third-place game was tied at 30 after three quarters, but Seneca outscored MVK, 11-2, in the fourth to claim the win.

Trey Hauch led MVK (11-6) with 12 points while Chase Hauch added 10.

Coal City Tournament: The 12th annual tournament to

benefit the Coal City baseball program will take place Sunday at Coal City High School.

The tournament is open to any boy or girl second grade or older, at a cost of $48 a team, or $6 a person on an eight-person team.

Teams will be limited to 20 a session.

Admission is $2 for both adults and students. To enter, the team manager will get a team of at least eight players and only the manager will need to send in the registration form and entry fee to Jerry McDowell, who can be reached for questions or further information at 815-7356387 or 815-634-5039, ext. 1943.

The high school and open divisions will use two gyms and will begin play at 10 a.m. At noon will be sixth, seventh and eighth-graders, with fourth and fifth graders at 2 p.m. and second and third-graders at 4 p.m.

Teams will have eight players maximum to start each

game.

Teams may have more than eight and use substitutes.

Players may only play on one team Players may play in an older division, but not younger. Games will be played just like P.E. classes. Teams can be co-ed. Three games of pool play will be played, and then a single elimination tournament.

Any all-girls teams will be paired against each other in pool play The manager needs to collect the insurance waivers for your team.

Van Riemsdyk raising some eyebrows on team

By SCOTT POWERS For the Chicago Sun-Times CHICAGO – Trevor van Riemsdyk has always impressed his older brother James van Riemsdyk, but Trevor especially showed him something through adversarial times the past few years.

James, who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, watched as Trevor, a Blackhawks defenseman, endured a season-ending ankle fracture in January 2014 at the University New Hampshire, a fractured patella with the Hawks in November of 2014 and a serious wrist injury with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs in March of 2015. As a result, Trevor underwent two

surgeries and played a total of 56 games over two seasons.

Despite all of that, James never witnessed Trevor become deterred by his unlucky fortune. The work ethic stayed in place. The smile never disappeared. His positive attitude kept pushing him forward.

Being away from hockey so often in recent years has made van Riemsdyk grateful to be on the ice consistently this season. He has remained healthy and has played in all 48 of the Hawks’ games this season.

Van Riemsdyk is still technically an NHL rookie, and that has been noticeable at times this season as his play has varied. His 49.8 Corsi percentage and minus-3 goal dif-

ferential in 5-on-5 play are indicators of that. He’s been put into more of an offensive role as of late which has helped his goal differential and increased his shot attempts. He has a plus-2 goal differential during the Hawks’ 11-game winning streak.

Van Riemsdyk has been striving to play a more consistent game.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville has shown confidence in van Riemsdyk by playing him significant minutes and giving him a role on the penalty kill. Van Riemsdyk has been fearless blocking shots and is first on the team and tied for 11th in the league with 97 blocked shots. He is also averaging 20:09 of ice time, which is just eight seconds less than

Johnny Oduya averaged last season.

Quenneville likes the direction van Riemsdyk has been heading this season.

“I think we’re using him in a lot of different situations,” Quenneville said. “Playing both sides helps our team, gets more ice time because of that. Got some assignments earlier in the year where he was against top lines or second lines, which a lot of nights you don’t know which is the best line. He gets responsibilities in our own end as well, and he’ll get better at killing plays as well. But we still like the way he handles the puck, moves it, sees plays.

And defending, with more experience he’ll only get better as he goes.”

What did she lead against six clubs after the given sequence?

The first two rounds of the bidding were fine. But over three diamonds, South should have bid three no-trump to show her heart stoppers.

If South had done that, North would have had an unenviable decision. Probably he would have insisted on a slam contract one way or another, but might have only invited with four no-trump; though that would have been cautious, despite the singleton club.

At the table, when South jumped a second time in clubs, North raised to six clubs.

From the auction, it sounded as if South did not have a heart control, because she had not bid three no-trump.

So, understandably, West led the heart seven.

Declarer won with her jack and planned to draw two rounds of trumps, then try to discard her diamond losers on dummy’s top spades.

When the club queen obligingly dropped under the ace, South claimed 13 tricks: seven clubs, three hearts and three spades.

If West had led a diamond, declarer would have had to avoid a trump loser.

The percentage play is a first-round finesse, which would have been fatal here.

That’s valuable because stress can take a toll on body and mind. Over time, stress can contribute to high blood pressure, depression, diabetes

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and other health problems. The good news is that by regularly practicing relaxation techniques such as breath focus, you can reduce the negative effects of stress.

When you breathe in, the muscles between your ribs pull them outward, which expands your lungs and causes your diaphragm to move downward.

The diaphragm is a strong sheet of muscle that divides the chest from the abdomen. When it drops downward, pressing against abdominal organs, this also expands your lungs and sucks air through your mouth and nose into your lungs. As

you breathe out, the diaphragm moves back upward, pressing against your lungs and helping to expel carbon dioxide waste from your body.

Deep abdominal breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.

In order to practice breath focus, you must first learn proper diaphragmatic breathing. Sit or lie down in a quiet, comfortable place. Close your eyes to remove visual distractions.

Relax your abdominal muscles. Take a slow, deep breath.

The air coming in through your nose should move downward into your lower belly.

That, in turn, should cause

your abdomen to expand. You should feel it. Now breathe out through your mouth. Your abdomen will get smaller.

Once you’re comfortable with diaphragmatic breathing, move on to breath focus. As you sit comfortably with your eyes closed, combine your breathing with helpful imagery and a focus phrase to help you relax. Imagine that the air you breathe in washes peace and calm into your body. Imagine that the air leaving your body carries tension and anxiety away.

As you inhale, think to yourself, “Breathing in peace and calm.” And as you exhale, think, “Breathing out tension and anxiety.” Start by doing 10 minutes of breath focus. Gradually work up to sessions that are about 15 to 20 minutes long.

There are other ways to trigger the relaxation response besides breath focus.

For example, there is a technique called progressive muscle relaxation, and one called autogenic training.

None has proven superior to the other. Most of my patients (and friends) who have tried to induce the relaxation response have used breath focus.

Does this sound a little weird, a little loosey-goosey?

Maybe it does, but it sure helps some of my patients and friends. And it’s simple -there’s no risk and it’s free. We can’t say that about tranquilizer medicines.
