But the term is particularly fitting this week as temperatures dropped to their lowest point this winter. Young area sluggers dodged the bitter cold Wednesday night for the Frozen Ropes Hitting Clinic, where Dave Wiers, of Wiers Baseball Academy, gave tips for the sport that occupies much of their time in the heat of summer.

It’s the 17th year for Wiers Baseball Academy and the seventh year of the offseason hitting clinic, held inside Logoworks at 824 Liberty St. in Morris. Wiers said although he gives individual tips here and there for the attendees, the main focus of the camp is repetition.

“We’re in here to get the rust off,” he said. “Because in the Midwest, we sometimes don’t know when we’ll get outside to play ball again.”

The group ranged in ages from 9- to 16-year-olds, with two students each in high school, middle school and elementary school. The three pairs rotated every 10 minutes between four batting scenarios.

Four Helping Hands buys coats for American Legion

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – The men of Mazon American Legion Post 352 will stay a bit warmer and drier as they attend military funerals and perform other veterans duties thanks to four people.

Jim and Cherie Hintze and Tim and Chris Harty formed Four Helping Hands 10 years ago to raise money for Special Olympics to help support fellow athletes of Jim and Cherie Hintze’s son, Zackory Hintze, who has been a Special Olympics athlete for more than a decade.

The group raised money by selling steaks and pizza, among other dinner items, to Mazon Dungeon of Terror attendees and the community.

“We started doing it as a way to raise money for Special Olympics,” Jim Hintze said.

“After five years we started using the money for other or-

ganizations and families in need.”

Tim Harty said since they’ve always used the American Legion Post to serve the meals, it only made sense that they give back a little extra to the organization.

“Since we use their kitchen, we’ve always donated something back to them,” Jim Hintze said. “This year we found out they all had mismatched coats and they wanted matching ones.”

Ron Clavey, American Legion Post’s chief finance officer, said it was important to the group of men who often attend military funerals in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery that they match when they are there together.

“The military is always about uniform. When we go to do last rites, we wanted to be uniform,” Clavey said. “In the summer it doesn’t matter because we have matching shirts, but when it’s cold or

Grundy County, new union work out first contract After nearly 2 years, county and employees reach agreement

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County has entered into its first contract with the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, Grundy County Civilian Chapter 693 union.

In August 2013 the state recognized the workers as a unit, and in May 2014 they sat down to negotiations with the county.

On Tuesday, the County Board voted, 15-0, with board members David Nelson and Frank Halpin absent, to accept the collective bargaining agreement presented.

“I would like to think it’s a contract that is fair to both sides,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said Thursday.

“Neither side got everything they wanted.”

Debbie Hauschild, a union member who works in the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the union members felt it was fair and a good start for a first agreement.

“It wasn’t able to solve every issue, like discrepancy in pay, but it did give everyone an increase in pay,” Hauschild said.

The agreement made wage increases retroactive to Dec. 1, 2014, for employees who were already employed by the county and had passed their probationary period before the Dec. 1 date.

Those hired after Dec. 1, 2014, or who were on probation at that time, will receive their first wage increase retroactive to Dec. 1, 2015.

Pryor said the wage increase was weighted so that those who made the least amount of money received the highest percentage increase.

According to the contract included in Tuesday night’s board packet: • Those who made under $11

an hour would see a 10.25 percent increase for 2014 and a 5 percent increases for 2015 and 2016.

• Those who made between $11 and $14 an hour would see a 6.75 percent increase for 2014 and a 2 percent increase for 2015 and 2016.

• Those who made between $14 and $19 an hour would see a 6.5 percent increase for 2014 with a 2 percent increase for 2015 and 2016.

• Those who made between $19 and $24 an hour would see a 5 percent increase for 2014 and a 2 percent increase for 2015 and 2016.

• Those who made more than $24 an hour would see a 2 percent increase for 2014 and a 1.5 percent increase for 2015 and 2016.

Pryor said the 53 employees who unionized had not been given a pay increase for several years as a cost-saving measure.

Hauschild said of the about 250 employees of the county, this group of 53 were the ones to experience the pay freezes, because most of the other employees were already unionized.

The contract also will have employees paying a little more for their insurance. Hauschild said the union agreed to pay 3 percent more in insurance premiums.

The board also approved a contract extension and a memorandum of understanding for AFSCME Local 3903 workers in the Grundy County Health Department with a 15-0 vote, with board members Nelson and Halpin again absent. The agreement will give an annual wage increase of 2 percent retroactive to Dec. 1, 2015 and extends the current contract to Dec. 1, 2017. Pryor said the agreement was a wage reopener that was previously scheduled to take place.

City Council to discuss various choices

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two city of Morris committees made recommendations for approval this week ahead of a City Council meeting set for Monday.

The Morris Finance Committee met Wednesday evening and discussed several topics.

The committee recommended the council approve a $2 million cyber insurance policy at a cost of $7,183 for the year.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said Thursday if the city were ever to be hacked, it would be required to notify residents three times through both the radio and newspaper of a security breach, in addition to sending them letters. The city would spend $150,000 to $200,000 on fixing the situation, not including potential lawsuits, he said.

The committee also recommended the council adopt an ordinance that would allow the city to use a certified electrical inspector for future building inspections. This would bump

the city’s inspection staff from two to three people, with the electrical inspector being paid through costs incurred by a builder or developer.

“The city doesn’t make any money on it, nor does it spend any money on it,” Kopczick said.

In other news, out of the Airport Committee, Alderman Julian Houston made a chairman’s recommendation Thursday morning that the council approve a renewal of the Morris Airport’s insurance plan with Northern Insurance Group and Global Aerospace, a provider of aircraft insurance and aviation risk management solutions.

Houston made the recommendation because the full committee was not in attendance.

The renewal would cost $13,776 for the next year – the same as last year. Kopczick said the plan includes $20 million in liability insurance and $5 million in hangar insurance.

All recommendations made in the meetings will be on the council agenda for Monday.

Born Dec. 4, 1931, in Morris, to the late Robert and Rhaddah (nee Sinclair) Bleifield.

Veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #704 A.F. & A.M. in Braidwood, IL and also a member of the Prairie States Leather Guild.

Surviving are three sons, Mark (Mal Sun) Bleifield of Black River, New York, Vincent (Coral) Bleifield of Verona, Illinois, and Eric (Justine) Bleifield of DeKalb, Illinois; two daughters, Barbara Bleifield of Everett, Washington, and Brenda (Rod) Jobe of Florissant, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Justin Jobe, Hailey Jobe, Jaylin Jobe, Daniel (Sasha) Bleifield, Timothy Bleifield, Jessica (Justin) Finefield, Stephen (Jessica) Bleifield, and Lindsay Bleifield; and one brother, Robert Bleifield of Coal City. Preceding him in death was his wife, Charlene Bleifield; and sister, Elaine Bleifield.

Alan Rickman, star of stage and ‘Harry Potter,’ dies at 69

By JILL LAWLESS The Associated Press LONDON – British actor Alan Rickman, a classically trained stage star and sensual screen villain in the “Harry Potter” saga and other films, has died.

He was 69.

Rickman’s family said that the actor died early Thursday in London after a battle with cancer.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played opposite Rickman in eight “Harry Potter” films, said Rickman was “undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with.”

Born to a working-class London family in 1946 and trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Rickman was often cast as the bad guy; with his rich, languid voice he could invest evil with wicked, irresistible relish.

His breakout role was as scheming French aristocrat the Vicomte de Valmont in an acclaimed 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Christopher Hampton’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”

Film roles included Hans Gruber, the psychopathic villain who tormented Bruce Willis in “Die Hard” in 1988; a deceased lover who consoles his bereaved partner in 1990’s “Truly Madly Deeply”; the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” in 1991; and a wayward husband in 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually.”

Millions know him from the Potter films, in which he played Hogwarts teacher Severus Snape, who was either a nemesis or an ally – possibly both – to the titular teenage wizard.

Radcliffe, who played Harry, said Rickman “was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career.”

Rowling tweeted that “there are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor (and) a wonderful man.”

Emma Thompson, who starred alongside Rickman in films including “Sense and Sensibility” and “Love Actually,” praised Rickman’s “humor, intelligence, wisdom and kindness” and called him “the finest of actors and directors.”

“I couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do with his face next,” she told Newsweek.

Mohammed Saghir, the present-day Sheriff of Nottingham — now a ceremonial role in the English Midlands city – paid tribute to Rickman’s version of Robin Hood’s famous foe.

“His sheriff was a gloriously nasty character who it was easy to love to hate and who he appeared to have great fun playing,” Saghir said.

Rickman’s villains were memorable, and included an Emmy-winning turn as “mad monk” Rasputin in a 1996 TV biopic.

But Rickman’s screen roles were remarkably varied, and included the upright Col. Brandon in Ang Lee’s 1995 film version of “Sense and Sensibility” and Irish politician Eamon de Valera in 1996 historical drama “Michael Collins.”

He had a sideline in comic sci-fi, bringing knowingness and fun to the spoof “Galaxy Quest” in 1999 and delivering existential ennui as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” in 2005.

He appeared frequently onstage, earning Tony Award nominations for “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” in 1987 and Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” in 2002.

“I so wish he’d played King Lear and a few other classical challenges but that’s to be greedy,” actor Ian McKellen wrote on Facebook. “He leaves a multitude of fans and friends.”

Rickman was also a filmmaker, directing and co-starring opposite Kate Winslet in 2014 costume drama “A Little Chaos.” Seventeen years earlier, he’d directed Emma Thompson and her mother

Phyllida Law in “The Winter Guest.”

In 2005, he directed “My Name is Rachel Corrie,” a play based on the diaries of an American pro-Palestinian activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer in the Gaza Strip.

Sigourney Weaver, who starred with Rickman in “Galaxy Quest” and the 2006 film “Snow Cake,” said the project was an example of the way Rickman “used his talent always to make a difference.”

Frequently charming in person, Rickman was, by his own account, uncompromising as an actor. During the filming of “Harry Potter,” he maintained Snape’s air of haughty disdain even off-camera.

“The animal in me takes over,” Rickman told The Associated Press in 2011 when he appeared on Broadway in Theresa Rebeck’s play “Seminar.”

“You’re as polite as possible, but it’s not always possible.”

Rickman is survived by his partner of 50 years, Rima Horton, whom he married in 2012. Funeral details weren’t immediately available.

Charles Butterfield Invitational celebrates milestone Saturday

In girls bowling circles, the Charles Butterfield Invitational is becoming one of those things.

The tournament at Morris’ Echo Lanes is being held for the 10th straight year under Redskin coach Harry Banks this Saturday. The first ball in the 14-team varsity and JV

event will be rolled at 9 a.m. and will consist of a morning and afternoon session of three games each.

The afternoon session should start between noon and 12:30 p.m., according to Banks, and will likely finish at around 2:30 to 3 p.m., with an awards ceremony after.

“It’s always fun to have this tournament,” he said. “It’s fun for our girls to have a big tournament like this in their own house.”

Jackpot dreams include an outdoor paradise By the time this column runs, we may have a new Powerball winner.

Or we may not. But I do think that it is safe to say that most people have at least fantasized about what it would be like to win that kind of cash.

I know we have talked about here at my house.

Work sites all across the country have office pools going. My workplace sure does.

People play out of fear that they will be the last employee left when everyone else wins.

What a nightmare that would be.

My family had a huge discussion about what they would do with the winnings.

Of course, the kids are thinking frivolous things like jet skis and new cars. My wife, on the other hand, worked out some interesting gifting options and the ability to help all kinds of people in need.

As the conversation continued, I drifted back in time

to think about the singular moment that told me what I would do if I ever came into big bucks.

Many years ago, I had the chance to take two brothers from New York City into the outdoors. Their father had been killed on 9/11. He was a firefighter who loved to hunt.

That fateful September day made sure he never had the chance to take his kids out and participate in the sport he loved.

I was fortunate to get that chance thanks to his uncle and a sponsor of mine.

On the way to a stand one night we crossed through a creek. I marched up the hill on the other side. I soon noticed those brothers were no longer following me. They both stopped in the middle of that stream and looked in awe.

Then it hit me, they have lived their entire lives in a concrete jungle. Something as simple as a babbling brook

At that moment, I knew that it would be amazing to own a place where you could take people who have never had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

I’m not talking a farm, or a family hunting plot. I’m talking a vast swath of land full of timber and fishing ponds.

A place so enormous that you could bring in hundreds of people a year and leave a lasting impact.

Remember, I’m dreaming here. I’m thinking of a $1.5 billion type of a place. Just imagine, there could endless fields of pristine upland game habitat. Acres upon acres of timber land for big game. I would have dove fields every-

where and waterfowl habitat that would make Ducks Unlimited proud. And then the fishing, oh man, the fishing.

My dream property would have lakes and ponds scattered throughout it that would make grown men salivate with anticipation. Places where kids could almost guarantee they would catch something. A state-of-the-art stocking and feeding program would provide catches of both numbers and quality.

Of course, the dream property would be home to the most amazing log cabin lodge your mind could come up with. A roaring fireplace and gourmet meal would await our guests each and every night. Luxurious accommodations that would provide the perfect setting for tales of the outdoors.

Did I mention that all of this would be free? Of course it would be. My goal would be to provide a place for people to

come and try something they have never done before. A place where families can have a lifetime of memories at zero cost to them.

Maybe we would bring busloads of kids from the toughest inner city neighborhoods. Maybe we would provide a place for our wounded warriors that used to fish and hunt, but find it difficult now because of an injury.

Who knows? The possibilities would be endless.

To win that $1.5 billion would be life-changing for sure. I shared my crazy idea of what I would do with the money and I know you have thought about it too. Someone will eventually pull the winning number.

I just hope that they use it to make the world a better place. Good luck.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Area Public Library is participating in We Care of Grundy County’s Souper Bowl of Caring fundraiser. This year, the librarians have added a new element to generate interest in the fundraiser.

Rose Nowak, Teen Services coordinator and web master, created a display in the front of the library to promote the fundraiser, as well as to highlight cooking and food-related books for library patrons. The library has included a free recipe for “Winter Warmup Crock Pot Soup” as part of the display. Patrons to the library are encouraged to take the recipe home with them.

“My intent with this

display is to highlight the Souper Bowl of Caring and to try and raise more money for We Care and our community,” Nowak said. “We are a part of the community, so we take part in the community.”

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement that began on Super Bowl Sunday in 1988. Since then, communities across the country have collected more than $41 million through the Souper Bowl of Caring to feed the hungry through local charities.

We Care of Grundy County has been participating in the Souper Bowl since 2009.

The funds raised until the Super Bowl will be used by We Care to help Grundy residents in need.

Last year, more than $6,000 was collected to help We Care provide food to thousands of Grundy County residents through mobile food pantries and office pantry visits.

This year, the fundraiser highlights We Care’s expand-

nizations will be entered in a contest to win the Souper Bowl of Caring trophy for Grundy County. There will be a trophy for the business and for the youth organization or school that raises the most money for the Souper Bowl of Caring. We Care encourages participants to be creative with the fundraiser, like the Morris Area Public Library, which has used its display to help bring awareness to the Souper Bowl and create a spirit of fun and friendly competition among the participants.

Wiers outlined his key points at the start of the session before assigning players to their stations. When the youngest batters were at the stationary tee, Wiers stepped in to set up the proper swing.

“Your front foot needs to be even with the plate, and your back foot needs to be back farther so you have a wider stance,” Wiers said to the tandem.

He then guided the bat from the launch position through the strike zone and ball before finishing with a proper follow-through.

Wiers said the most serious players participate beginning in November, and the more

recreational ones come with the start of a new year. Many former campers have gone on to college baseball careers and been part of some very good teams, Wiers said.

The hitting clinic takes place each Wednesday from November through February.

Wiers said he recently had surgery and is recovering, and the clinic will be back to a weekly schedule in February. Player admission was cut in half for January because only half as many sessions were held.

That is a common form of humor: two apparently disconnected phrases do relate unexpectedly. But in this deal, “10” is key.

When in four of a major, ask yourself what 10 tricks you plan to win. For example, in this deal from the 2015 European Open Championships in Tromso, Norway, how would you play in four hearts after West leads a trump?

One declarer had lost one diamond and three clubs, and no doubt grumbled that he was unlucky. It is true that he was, but he did not need to be unlucky – he should have had his eye on one spade, four hearts, three diamonds and two spade ruffs in the dummy.

Declarer wins the first trick with his heart eight, cashes the spade ace, ruffs a spade in the dummy, and plays a diamond to his queen, which West ducks, realizing that winning the trick cannot defeat the contract.

South ruffs the spade queen, draws trumps, and continues diamonds. West takes the third round, apparently cutting declarer off from the last diamond, and leads his final spade. South ruffs and must broach the clubs.

Here, he must lead either the jack or king.

West takes the trick, but has to return a club, letting South’s king or jack be his 10th trick. If, instead, South exits with a low club, he will lose three club tricks.

Probably it is best to lead the king. One indication is West’s opening trump lead, which suggests dangerous holdings in the other suits, especially the minors.
