By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Leaders at Morris Community High School are excited about a charitable contribution coming to life that has the potential to save lives.

District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran on Monday informed the District 101 school board that come fall 2016, the school will team with Morris Hospital to provide free and confidential electrocardiograms for any student who has a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.

The Rhythm of Our Youth program was started in large part because of the Morris Hospital Auxiliary, which in December raised more than $158,000 for the screening program at one of the most successful charity galas in the program’s 47-year history.

Morris students aren’t the only ones who will benefit from the program. There will be a rotation among the four high schools in Grundy County, Halloran said, and possibly Dwight and Seneca high schools. The rotation will allow screenings to take place at each school every other year, if it continues. Halloran estimated Morris High School’s cost at $15,000 a year. The program is modeled after Young Hearts for Life, founded by Dr. Joseph Marek in 2006. Marek’s program is well-known for its unique model that uses trained community volunteers to deliver a low-cost, efficient screening program.

Coal City kids use activities to connect with library book club material

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Bluestem Book Club at Coal City Public Library is more than just a group of avid readers.

On Tuesday afternoon, the group – composed of third- to fifth-grade students – met for an hour after school at the library. When the group members headed home at 4:30 p.m., they did so with a bagel covered in lard and birdseed, and

a new appreciation for bird beaks.

Things such as this are the norm for the Bluestem Book Club, a group focused on Illinois authors, which meets the second Tuesday of each month from September to March for book discussions, book-reading and related activities.

Grundy employees recognized for service

The county annually recognizes employees at service marks in five-year increments beginning at five years of service.

“Consistency is often the key to success, but change is what keeps us current. We’ve seen many changes in the last few years both in leadership and technology,” Vicki Geiger, personnel chairwoman, said at the Grundy County Board meeting Tuesday night. “The employees we are honoring today through your longevity have been and still are a huge part of Grundy County’s success.”

Each employee was recognized and introduced by someone from his or her department or by the board committee representative who oversaw that portion of county government.

Members with five and 10 years of service were given a pin and certificate; those with 15 years of service were given a pin, certificate and $25 gift card; and those with 20 years of service were given a pin, certificate and $50 gift card.

MORRIS – While a 2015 fiscal audit still shows significant deficiencies, it also shows improvement by Grundy County.

“While there are still significant deficiencies, there has been a significant improvement even from the beginning of the year,” Tawnya Mack with Mack & Associates CPA told the board at its Tuesday meeting.

Mack & Associates found the county had four significant deficiencies and no material weakness compared with last year when the county had two significant deficiencies and two material weaknesses.

Lallos Mexican Bar and Grill relocates Lone Star status still up in the air

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – One longtime Channahon restaurant is preparing to open next week in a new location. However, another business in Channahon is working out issues to get back up and running.

Lallos Mexican Bar and Grill moved from the old Rittof building on Fryer Street in Channahon, where it has been for nine years, to the plaza just behind Lone Star Restaurant and Lounge.

The restaurant’s lease on Fryer Street expired in November, and Casey and Lallos Gallegos decided it would be more beneficial to find a newer facility than to put money into the old building, Casey Gallegos said.

“The building is 100-andsome years old. It needed a lot of work,” she said.

The Gallegos took two units on Reed Street, knocked down and replaced walls, moved bathrooms, built a bar and remodeled the kitchen. They now have about 600 more square feet.

There also is an outside patio where food can be served.

They are hoping to get an outdoor alcohol license in the future.

While the menu will remain the same when they open back for business, hours will be expanded to include daily breakfast starting at 7 a.m. instead of just the weekends.

With final inspections completed this past Monday, Casey Gallegos said, doors are scheduled to open Jan. 18.

Gallegos has no problem moving in just behind Lone Star.

There were limited facilities that met their specific needs, and without a downtown area, Route 6 and Reed Street is a good area to be in, she said.

She’s also confident regular customers will follow them to the new location, particularly those who come for the $1 tacos and chef Lallos Gallegos’ special cream of carrot soup with jalapenos.

Northern Illinois Farm Show hits DeKalb Presentation on extreme weather in the past year among the exhibits BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The tornado that destroyed Fairdale on April 9 was what Candice King, chief meteorologist with WTVO-TV in Rockford called a “perfect storm,” and said it was one of the most-documented weather phenomena the National Weather Service has seen.

The tornadoes that touched down in the region last year were the subject of a presentation at the Northern Illinois Farm Show, which opened Wednesday at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center in DeKalb.

The Fairdale tornado was one of 11 that touched down in Illinois that day. At its strongest, the twister was an EF4, which means winds reached speeds from 166 to 200 mph.

It was an EF3 storm when it hit Fairdale, with winds between 136 and 165 mph, and it was more than halfa-mile wide at its base, she said. The disaster left two dead, many injured and a rural community nearly leveled in its wake.

It’s rare to see such extreme weather, but April 9 was a day when all the factors clicked to make it happen, King said.

“These thunderstorms, as

they started to develop, kind of crossed over the boundary of the warm front,” King said. “Because there is spin already going on in the atmosphere … that’s what you need to get a wall cloud and eventually a tornado. ... It just had a lot of wind shear and a lot of moisture to work with.”

The annual farm show brings visitors from around the Midwest and vendors from around the country.

There are nearly 200 booths at the show and barely any sat empty Wednesday.

The show is put on by IDEAg group, which also hosts trade shows in Texas, Florida, Minnesota and South Dakota, according to its website.

“So far, its been a good show,” IDEAg rep Rebekah Brennan said. “There were some empty booths, but turnout-wise, it’s been good.”

Brennan said she didn’t have an estimate of how many visitors came through the doors on Wednesday. The show is a good opportunity for farmers to network and see what’s new in the industry, she said.

“There’s so much going on,” she said. “This is such a good way to see new products, what’s going on in the [agriculture] world and meet new people.”

Cameras mounted on the flying machines can help farmers monitor their crops for signs of disease or other problems.

Use of drones is a growing trend, and the company provides services to farmers around the nation, Gan said.

“There are a lot of farmers that are stepping into drones nowadays,” she said. “It’s been great.”

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet state lawmaker is seeking to reimburse colleges and universities that fronted $168 million to help students pay for classes last fall because their grant funding is tied up in state budget disputes. Pat McGuire State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, filed Senate Bill 2226 on Wednesday, which would appropriate $168 million to the Sue Rezin Illinois Student Assistance Commission from the General Revenue Fund for grant awards to students eligible for the Monetary Award Program.

The bill would cover money fronted by institutions last fall semester.

The legislation represents the third attempt to provide state funding for MAP, McGuire said. House Bill 4146 proposed appropriations of about $397 million before Rauner vetoed it.

reading Nov. 10 in the House.

McGuire said Rauner has shown his appreciation for preschool and K-12 education. “[This] will give him a chance to show his appreciation for post-secondary education,” he said.

A recent survey from ISAC showed that out of 84 colleges and universities, 41 schools reported they would not carry the MAP load for students once more this spring and about a dozen more haven’t decided.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said college officials are happy to hear the news of McGuire’s bill and thankful the Senate Higher Education Committee – which McGuire chairs – took testimonies during a hearing at JJC on MAP seriously.

“We think this is a definite step in the right direction,” she said.

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said she supports MAP grants, as it is important for students and families to afford college, but opposes the approach of approving legislation for funding.

“This piecemeal approach to paying our expenses is not healthy for local municipalities, for families, it’s not healthy for the state. That’s why it’s important we get a budget compromise,” she said.

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, had similar criticism of McGuire’s proposal.

She also said universities need to tighten their own belts before receiving state aid, citing a Wednesday memo from Rauner’s office that was critical of public university spending.

According to the memo, Illinois public universities raised tuition rates by more than 200 percent in the past 14 years and six of them employ eight lobbying firms to lobby the state.

“Somebody needs to pay attention to how [universities] are paying taxpayer money. …

Because it’s not going to students and it’s not going to teachers,” McDermed said.

ESPN, NBC sportscaster Jim Simpson dies at 88 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BRISTOL, Conn. – Sportscaster Jim Simpson has died.

He was 88.

ESPN says he died Wednesday in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a short illness. Simpson worked for NBC, ABC, CBS and TNT, and when he joined ESPN in 1979, he gave the fledgling cable sports network instant credibility.

In 1998, Simpson received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sports Emmy Awards.

ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen calls him “a television legend.”

Simpson called 14 Olympics, 16 Major League Baseball All-Star games, six Super Bowls and six World Series for TV or radio.

He worked for NBC from 1964-79, handling AFL and later NFL broadcasts.

His TV career started in 1949, when he left a Maryland radio station for a job at the new Channel 9 in Washington.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Crowley Jones, a son, four daughters, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

at Stratford over 47 seasons, appearing in everything from “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” to “Henry VI.” “The Stratford Festival has lost one of its pioneers, a gifted actor and a favorite uncle.

Bill Needles was the embodiment of grace and generosity. His humor, humanity and sense of fun infused his work on and off the stage,” Stratford’s artistic director Antoni Cimolino said.

raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Needles studied at the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago before joining the Stratford Festival in its inaugural season in 1953.

He made his Stratford debut in “Richard III,” under the direction of Tyrone Guthrie.

His last performance at the Festival stage was as Castruchio in 2006’s “The Duchess of Malfi.”

Theater guild begins winter rehearsals SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Theatre Guild Inc. has begun rehearsals and is taking reservations for its winter world-premiere production of “Judgment Days,” a drama written by guild member Dennis Fisher.

The story: The Holy Bible says to judge not, lest ye be judged.

As people stagger drunk in the streets of a small Illinois town at the height of the

Great Depression, judgments are made and judgments are received.

The repercussions have mortal consequences for a young family.

The cast consists of both veteran and new guild members, including Julie Buck, Rick Gaska, Jenna Stinson, Brian Stroup, and Jim Welch, all of Morris, and Kelli Montgomery of Ottawa.

“Judgment Days” opens Feb. 19. The production continues Feb. 20, 21, 26, 27 and

closes Feb. 28.

All Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., and both Sunday matinee performances will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Ticket prices for adults are $12 each if reserved by email, phone or bought online, and $15 each if bought at the door.

Newark boys flex muscles in rout of Seneca

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Newark’s boys basketball team has used several formulas to win 16 games this season. All of them may have been displayed during an 84-49 rout of Seneca on Tuesday night.

There were stretches dominated by the standout Newark brothers Jack and Will Clausel, and other stretches where the Norsemen, who had five players in double figures, had others take the offensive reins. A trapping defense that generated 12 steals was complemented by a rebounding collective that won the board battle, 32-20.

“We have a lot of weapons.

We can score from a lot of places,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “We missed a lot of layups tonight and got out of sorts defensively a few times, but then Seneca runs their offense real well … Things are looking good.”

It was another episode of the Jack Clausel show for the Norsemen early. The center had a four-point play as part of his 3-for-3 showing from 3-point land during a 12-point opening quarter.

His efforts, along with six Evan Schomer points, allowed the Norsemen to overcome 3s from Sean Baker and Ross McCormick and lead, 24-12, at quarter’s end.

Clausel was up to 15 points when he was assessed his third foul at the 3:59 mark of the second quarter, prompting his removal for the remainder of the half. All the Norsemen did in his absence was outscore the Irish, 11-0, concluding a 20-0 run that followed Seneca scoring the quarter’s first five points.

Cameron Myre hit a pair of 3s and Mitchell Schmidt hit another with Clausel benched.

Newark advanced to a sectional championship with Clausel sidelined because of injury in 2014-15, so the Norsemen know they do not always have to rely on him – a reality that was reinforced Tuesday.

We don’t like [Clausel having foul trouble] to happen, but it’s not that big a deal. Again, it comes back to that confidence thing – other players stepping up when they need to.”

Jack Clausel and Schomer shared the team lead in points with 18 for Newark (16-2), the latter’s total putting him at more than 1,000 for his career.

They were followed closely by Myre with 16, Schmidt with 14 and Will Clausel with 10. Dylan Patrick shared the team lead in rebounds with Schomer with seven, and the Clausels, Patrick, Myre and Schmidt all had multiple assists.

In a statistical anomaly, the 6-foot-6-inch Jack Clau-

sel and the 6-foot-5-inch Myre were a combined 8-for-11 from 3-point land.

“I wouldn’t like guarding it, to be honest,” Myre said.

“It’s not something we rely on, necessarily, but if they go

in, it helps.”

Kole Gallick scored 11 points to lead Seneca (5-11), which received 10 from McCormick, nine from Hunter Greve and eight from Devin Bryant.

“I thought we tried to compete, then their size got to us a little bit,” Seneca coach Russell Witte said.

“It’s one of those games. It is what it is. They’re a very good team.”

STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – The early part of the 2015-16 season has been marked by injuries and getting to know each other on the court for the Morris girls basketball team. With injured point guard Mya Shannon back in the lineup, though, the Redskins won their third straight game Tuesday night, beating Coal City, 42-33. Shannon led the Redskins (6-12) with 21 points, while Meghan Smith scored nine and Alissa Bojovic added five.

Morris, which visits DeKalb on Friday night, led with 11-10 after the first quarter, but the defense stifled Coal City in a 9-2 second quarter that led to a 20-12 halftime lead. Morris outscored Coal City (8-10), 10-9, in the third quarter and each team scored 12 in the fourth.

“We did a pretty good job,” Morris coach Kate Carey said.

“It’s nice to have a winning streak going. With Mya back, we are getting the other girls back to where they are more comfortable and it’s showing.”

Mackenna Emerson led Coal City with 13 points, while Taylor Meents added nine.

Morris sophomores 34, Coal City 33: Morris (6-11) overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter for the win. Coal City’s Makenna Crater led all scorers with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Amanda Schmidt led Morris with 10 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Madi Mayberry scored nine

points to go with 10 rebounds, while Alisson Bojovic scored six points.

Seneca 57, Wilmington 42:

Cora Wilkinson led Seneca (6-14, 4-4) to the Interstate Eight Conference win with 20 points, five rebounds and five steals, while Paige Hacker had 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Claudia Paulson added nine points and seven boards for the Irish.

The grand aim of all bridge players is to find the winning line after drawing logical deductions from the auction – both bids and passes – and cards played. This deal is a good example.

It occurred during a junior match between the Czech Republic and England.

South was in four hearts after West had pre-empted in spades. West led the diamond seven to East’s jack and declarer’s ace. How did declarer analyze the play?

West drew in one notch (not bidding three spades) because he had a relatively weak suit and was vulnerable – but that was uncharacteristically cautious for a junior.

Frederick Illingworth (South) was threatened with five losers: three clubs and two hearts. The first problem was in the trump suit.

Typically, a pre-emptive overcall suggests shortness in the opener’s suit, but in this case, declarer felt that if West had been short in hearts, he would have considered sacrificing in four spades; instead, he had passed in tempo over four hearts.

So, South played a heart to the king and ace, won the next diamond in his hand, and cashed the heart queen.

Then he took his spade ace, played a diamond to the queen, ruffed the spade queen in his hand, discarded a club on the diamond 10, and led a trump to dummy. Illingworth completed a well-played deal by leading dummy’s club jack.

As the cards lay, the defenders could not take three tricks in the suit.

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-lasting inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, warmth, redness and swelling in joints.

Over time, the affected joints may become misshapen, misaligned and damaged.

For many people with RA, drug treatment slows down the damaging effects of the disease. But non-drug treatments – including heat therapy – play an important role in pain relief, improved range of motion and enhanced strength.

Heat helps by reducing pain and relaxing muscles.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff You can try some heat-related techniques at home: • Warm bath or shower.

Soaking for 15 to 20 minutes in a warm bath exposes the body to warmth and allows the weight-bearing muscles to relax.

A warm shower also can help reduce stiffness. Dress warmly after a shower or bath to prolong the benefit.

• A heating pad is another good idea, but keep in mind moist heat penetrates more deeply. You can buy hot packs and moist/dry heating pads.

Or create a homemade hot pack by heating a damp folded towel in a microwave oven for 20 to 60 seconds, or in an oven set to 300 degrees F for five to 10 minutes. To prevent burns, test the heated towel on the inside of your arm before applying to a joint: It should feel comfortably warm, not hot.

Heat-based treatments also are a standard part of physical therapy: • Ultrasound produces heat in deep body tissues. Physical therapists may use it to reduce inflammation and relieve pain and stiffness in joints affected by RA. The physical therapist first will apply a gel on the skin over the affected joint.

He or she then will rub a

wand-like instrument over the area to transmit the ultrasonic waves.

• Diathermy uses electromagnetic waves to deliver heat deep into the tissues.

Diathermy should not be used on actively inflamed joints.

• Paraffin bath. In this technique, you dip your hands or feet into wax melted in an electric appliance that maintains a safe temperature.

After the wax hardens, the therapist wraps the treated area in a plastic sheet and blanket to retain the heat.

Treatments generally take about 20 minutes, after which the wax is peeled off. Paraffin bath kits also are available for home use.

In the past 25 years, pow-

erful new medicines made possible by breakthroughs in immunology research have become available to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

A patient of mine had a lot of joint damage before the treatments were available, but has had no further damage since. She once told me: “I’m very grateful for these new drugs that science has made possible. I can see how much they have helped.

But if you ask me which treatments I like the most, it’s the paraffin baths. They give me such relief.”
