“I don’t do voice changes, but I change the tone. I build up anticipation as I point out the pictures, and how I turn the page,” she said. “It gets them excited about reading.

When they get excited, then I get excited.”

The library trustees sent out a news release Tuesday announcing the retirement, which is effective as of Feb. 11.

“On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, we respectfully accept Carol’s retirement request and wish her the best.

She has shared the joy of reading with the children of Morris and the surrounding communities for the past 37 years and has become a town fixture.

We are grateful for her accom-

plishments and years of service,” Steven Larson, library board president, said in the news release.

In July, Hutchings was terminated by Director Lorene Kennard. At an August library board meeting, the public came out in support of Hutchings and she was reinstated.

The reason for the termination was never given publicly.

Kennard was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon for comment.

Hutchings said she is grateful for the support she has received.

She said she has no plans for her retirement and hopes that God’s plan for her will become clear.

“I’m excited to see what is out there for me,” she said.

There will be an open house reception to celebrate Hutchings’ retirement Jan. 24 at the library.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A historical document was found on the second floor of the Coal City police station as the department prepared to remodel an old meeting room into an evidence room.

“History is all around us, but sometimes it hides in a closet,” Charlie Brown, commander of Coal City VFW St. Juvin Post 1336, said in an email.

The email was referring to a document found by police officer Kevin Jones.

The long-forgotten framed document is an “honor roll” with hand-lettered names of 40 members of the United Mine Workers Local 1147 who served during World War II. Where the current police station is located once sat the Village Hall, fire station, library, jail and meeting room that was used by various local organizations, including the mine workers union, Brown said.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The county board voted, 13-0, Tuesday to fill the county board vacancy created by the resignation of John Galloway with Grundy County Republican Central Committee nomination Mireya Martin of Minooka.

“We’re very excited to welcome Mireya to the board,” County Board Chairman David Welter said. “Her education and experience will be an asset to the board.”

Martin is a graduate of Stanford University in California and the University of Illinois Law School. She holds an Illinois law license but is taking time away from practicing the law to raise her family, according to a news release issued by the Republican Committee.

Martin said she is excited to join the county board to represent District 2.

“I really want to be a part of the fiscal responsibility of the board,” she said before the meeting. “I want to help the county to continue to maxi-

Shared busing saves Morris D-101 money Hundreds of thousands of dollars saved across Morris-area districts

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Savings are happening for Morris High School District 101 in its shared busing services agreement with District 60C and District 54.

District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran on Monday night updated the District 101 school board on how much is being saved by sharing busing services with the Morris-area districts compared with using an outside contractor.

District 101 formerly used Illinois Central School Bus for its busing.

On regular education transportation, District 101

saved about $132,799 in 2013-14 and $135,476 in 2014-15, according to a cost sheet provided with the latest board meeting agenda. Early estimates have the 2015-16 cost savings at $143,164.

District 101 was estimated to spend about $400,000 a year, but expenditures for regular busing are down to $267,201 in 2013-14, $271,724 in 2014-15 and $263,833 in 2015-16, according to the cost sheet.

“It’s a positive indicator of some of the efficiencies provided by shared services agreements,” Halloran said.

“After reviewing the numbers, it’s validation that we’re achieving the results we an-

ticipated.”

After several steps in recent years to become one busing operation, services for all three districts were consolidated physically and financially at the start of this school year into one service based out of Saratoga Elementary School District 60C. An agreement was made in March 2015 to transfer special education busing from Morris Elementary District 54 to District 60C, marking the final step in consolidation.

Halloran thanked those in charge of the operation, including District 60C Superintendent Kathy Perry, dispatcher Tracy Gonzalez and maintenance director Don Tondini, along with their staff and bus drivers, for making it a success. District 101 board Secretary Judie Roth thanked them as well.

“[The savings] are to be applauded,” Roth said. “It’s so good to hear.”

The districts have shared special education busing services since the 2002-03 school year.

The savings are even more substantial in this category, Halloran said, because special education students need to travel greater distances to be in schools that offer programs ideal for each student.

He said many special education students travel about an hour each day both to and from schools that offer these programs.

The cost sheet estimates

the three districts will have saved almost $4.5 million combined between 2002 and 2016 in shared special education busing services. District 101 is expected to save $277,536 in special education busing this school year thanks to shared services, while District 54 is at $222,891 and District 60C is at $110,901.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Representatives from Morris Community High School and Yorkville High School are working to ease tensions and promote positivity between the rival schools at future sporting events.

There’s been tension in the rivalry at sporting events for at least 10 years, MCHS Principal Kelly Hussey said. In recent years, students from both schools have had less-thanpleasant exchanges with each other on social media in addition to both sides singling out individual athletes with inappropriate chants at games, he said.

To move toward building a more positive relationship between fan bases, MCHS administrators and 20 student pride leaders traveled north on Route 47 one day in December to Yorkville High for a threehour spirit summit with their counterparts from Yorkville.

Morris administrators selected seniors and juniors who they felt might help the situation as pride leaders. Yorkville High did the same.

“You could feel the tension in the air as we walked into their lobby,” Hussey said.

But Morris administrators pushed their students to introduce themselves and soon enough, Yorkville students did the same. They then took part in an ice-breaking activity before splitting into groups of eight, each composed of four Morris students and four Yorkville students.

The groups brainstormed, and each came up with different guidelines for fans at sporting events. Main themes were then turned into rules to follow.

One they agreed to, Hussey said, is to have pride leaders from each school meet before every game to shake hands and promote good sportsmanship.

This is scheduled to take place Feb. 6 at the next basketball game between the schools.

The groups agreed on five “spirit student decisions.”

Second, they agreed to meet and greet each other before competition. Third, they’d like Morris students to introduce their friends to counterparts from Yorkville and vice versa.

Fourth, they want to set a good example on social media. Last but not least, the golden rule is to act toward others how you would want to be acted toward.

Hussey said that before they knew it, each school’s students

learned they had a lot more in common with their rivals than they initially thought.

“Aside from our schools, our colors, our mascots and all of that, we find that as people, we’re more alike than we are different,” he said. “We hope this is a good first step in creating a positive environment.”

Rauner reflects on first year of budget impasse

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – One year into Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s term, the state doesn’t have a budget, and he hasn’t gotten the structural reforms he’s been pushing as part of his “Turnaround Agenda.”

Rauner said in an interview Monday with Shaw Media that he isn’t surprised, but he is frustrated by the situation, although he added that the state’s problems took years to create and will take time to fix.

But Rauner also pointed to Gov. Question: Is this where you expected to be one year in?

Rauner: Well, I’m not totally surprised. I’m obviously a bit disappointed we haven’t been able to get major structural reforms that are so badly needed, but it was a good year in many regards. We made some major strides in the right direction, and we’ll just stay persistent and strong, trying to get the structural reforms to grow the economy and get more value for taxpayers.

We’ll stay the course.

Question: When you were running for office, you said you were going to run Illinois like a CEO runs a business. How has that worked out for you?

Rauner: Mostly very well.

The parallels between leading in government and leading

in business are very similar.

It’s about assembling a very talented team of executives, leaders. It’s about team building. It’s about setting a vision and a plan, laying it out. And then it’s about managing to implement that plan. It’s all very similar. It’s negotiating.

It’s selling. It’s all very similar skills to business.

Obviously, the big difference is major structural change is hard. It’s hard in business, but in business, the constituents that have to be convinced or persuaded – the scale is just fundamentally different. Democracy is designed to change slowly. It’s just built that way, and to get major change just takes awhile. I’m not totally surprised. I’m frustrated, but I’m not surprised.

Rauner: I think that’s goofy spin from some of my opponents. We’ve taken many things off the table. The state needs many reforms. We’ve taken most of them off the table.

One of the biggest is we’ve taken right to work off the table. We’ve taken empowerment zones off the table.

That’s a huge issue because we’re bleeding out our manufacturing base. Manufacturers are leaving Illinois in droves.

Thousands of manufacturing jobs are leaving. Those are good-paying, high-quality jobs. They’re going to more labor flexible states. They’re going to right-to-work states.

It would be hugely powerful for our state if we could have some counties compete with Texas and Tennessee and South Carolina and Indiana.

But I’ve taken it off the table.

And there are other things I’ve taken off the table, and I’ve been willing to add things too that Democrats want on education funding or minimum wage. I’ve been willing to put that on the table. But so far the speaker has been just unwilling to negotiate any compromises – nothing. He’s just focused on the election and posturing for the next election and fundraising for the next election.

Question: The other structural change you mentioned is the pensions. Can you talk about what you’d like to see happen in that area?

Rauner: I’m cautiously optimistic that that’s an exciting area that we can improve.

We’ve had a breakthrough I think in recent weeks. One of the big things we’ve agreed on is in pensions. We’ve agreed on the basic concept of how to change the pensions in a constitutional way. That’s a big breakthrough.

Now it’s just a question of which items of compensation get included in consideration to either tie people to choosing

tier one pension or tier two pension or tier three pension, [options that under previous proposals have included less generous pension benefits in exchange for higher salaries, vacation and a switching bonus]. If we do it right, we can save over $2 billion for the taxpayers of Illinois. I’m cautiously optimistic. Maybe this year we can do some pension reform.

Question: And you’re confident that it’s constitutional because that’s been one of the big roadblocks?

Rauner: We are. Until the Supreme Court rules, nobody will know 100 percent, but I think we’ve all agreed that it’s extremely likely that it’s constitutional.

Question: How do you expect the next three years to go? Much the same?

Rauner: [Laughs]. Change will always be hard, and we’re going to try to drive change every year, so we’ll have challenges every year. That said, I believe we’ll begin to make some breakthroughs. You know, we did have some big breakthroughs. We agreed on unemployment insurance reform. That was a big deal. We agreed on public safety reform.

That was a big deal. We agreed on how to fix the unbalanced $1.6 billion deficit from last year. That was a big deal.

We have gotten things done.

We will get things done. It’s just the structural change is hard.

Last survivor of 1906 San Francisco earthquake dies

By KRISTIN J. BENDER The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – The last survivor of the devastating San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 has died, a relative confirmed Monday.

William A. “Bill” Del Monte died at a retirement home in nearby Marin County on Monday.

He was 11 days shy of his 110th birthday. His niece, Janette Barroca of San Francisco, confirmed his death of natural causes.

He’d been doing “great for 109 years old,” Barroca said Monday.

Del Monte was just three months old when the quake struck, forcing his family into the streets to escape in a horsedrawn buck board with fire burning on both sides, Barroca said.

The family crossed the bay to Alameda County but eventually came back to the city after the home was rebuilt, Barroca said.

Hall of Fame baseball player Monte Irvin dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – Hall of Famer Monte Irvin, a power-hitting outfielder who starred for the New York Giants in the 1950s in a career abbreviated by Major League Baseball’s exclusion of black players, has died.

He was 96.

The Hall of Fame said Irvin died Monday night of natural causes at his Houston home.

Irvin was 30 when he joined the Giants in 1949, two years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Irvin spent seven of his eight big league seasons with the Giants and one year with the Chicago Cubs in 1956. A native of Haleburg, Alabama, Irvin played in the Negro, Mexican and Puerto Rican leagues during his 20s.

Irvin batted .300 or more

three times with a high of .329 in 1953. He finished with a career average of .293 with 99 homers and 443 RBIs, numbers that would have surely been far higher if not for the game’s racial segregation.

“Today is a sad, sad day for me,” said Hall of Famer Willie Mays, a teammate of Irvin’s with the Giants. “I lost someone I cared about and admired very, very much; someone who was like a second father to me. Monte was a kind of guy that you had to be around to get to know. But once you became friends, he always had your back. You had a friend for life.

“Monte Irvin was a great left-fielder. Monte Irvin was a great man. I will miss him.

There are no words for how I feel today. I could say so much more about Monte, but this is not so easy to do right now.”

By RELISH MAGAZINE The 2009 movie “Julie and Julia” was a shot in the arm not only for Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” but for her classic Beef Bourguignon recipe as well.

“Carefully done, and perfectly flavored, it is one of the most delicious beef dishes concocted by man,” Child wrote in the cookbook that jumpstarted her culinary career and which became the focal point of Julie Powell’s culinary blogging adventure. To put a healthy spin on the recipe, we cut down on the beef, used lean beef and increased the veggies. To capture the richness of the original, the recipe uses a beurre manié, a mixture of butter and flour that thickens the sauce so that it, in Child’s words, “enrobes” the other ingredients.

The sauce is velvety and smooth, the vegetables are sweet, and the beef is perfectly seasoned and tender.

BEEF BOURGUIGNON Serves 8

1½ tsp olive oil

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A big part of a fourth-quarter comeback in basketball is playing stingy defense and forcing turnovers when your team is on defense.

To that end, the Morris boys basketball team did that Tuesday night in a 54-39 nonconference loss to Pontiac.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, they were unable to convert that into the other important part of a comeback: scoring points. Morris misfired on 11 of its 13 shots in the fourth quarter, which resulted in only eight points in the fourth.

Morris, which falls to 8-9 on the season, got a team-leading 17 points from sophomore Tyler Spiezio, while senior point guard Tommy Balentine chipped in with 10. The Redskins, though, were colder than the weather from 3-point land, missing on all of their 11 3-point attempts.

One 3-point attempt went in the basket, but it was a 3 ⁄4 -court heave at the end of the third quarter by Spiezio that was ruled to have been released after the buzzer and did not count.

Meanwhile, Pontiac’s Cam Brown was a one-man wrecking crew from beyond the arc, sinking eight 3-pointers on his own en route to a game-high 27 points. His outside game complemented the inside attack of teammate Kye Comincioli, who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Pontiac scored the first four points of the game, but Morris answered with a 6-0 run on buckets by Balentine and Jordan Miracle, followed by a steal and layup by Aurelius Lennon-Rios. Brown answered with his first 3-pointer, giving the Indians the lead for good.

Pontiac took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter and Brown hit three 3-pointers plus an old-fashioned threepoint play to help the Indians to a 27-15 halftime lead. Morris went only 1 of 9 from the floor in the second quarter and scored just three points.

CULLOM – Celia Barna had a breakout game Monday night for the Gardner-South Wilmington girls basketball team and it led the Lady Panthers to a 72-51 River Valley Conference win over Tri-Point.

Barna had a season-high 26 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals to lead G-SW (11-6, 5-1), which committed just eight turnovers in the contest. Jenni Price (8 points) had four assists, five rebounds and four steals, while Sydney Perkins (7 points) had four assists and four rebounds. Marlana Ferrari chipped in with

14 points.

“Celia Barna was just unstoppable and Marlana Ferrari also had a big game getting points on the board for us,” G-SW coach Adam Leigh said.

“Jenni Price gave us a lot of opportunities to score in the post as well. This is the most points we’ve scored in a game this season.”

Bears 2015 in review: Offensive line

By KEVIN FISHBAIN What worked: The two best players on the offensive line played like it, giving the offense two foundation blocks to continue building around, regardless of position. Matt Slauson played every snap in 2015 and proved to be the ultimate team and versatile player when he filled in at center, including a mid-game shift to the snapping role in a win over Oakland. Slauson was a consummate professional all season and rarely made a mistake in run- or pass-blocking.

Kyle Long had to take his two-time Pro Bowl pedigree at guard to right tackle, finding out the week of the first game of the season he’d have to make the shift. Even though Long had a few glaring mistakes, magnified because they resulted in strip-sacks, he also had strong performances against the league’s top pass rushers.

The other bright spot along the line came from an unlikely place – Charles Leno Jr., a seventh-round pick in Phil Emery’s last draft. Leno stepped in at left tackle when Jermon

Bushrod suffered a concussion in Week 3 and did well protecting Jay Cutler’s blind side throughout the season, earning high praise from Ryan Pace.

What didn’t: Like the skill positions, the O-line was ravaged by injuries and forced to trot out several different combinations. Long was the only player to start every game at the same spot up front. Bushrod’s injuries relegated him to a backup role, and his future with the Bears is very much in doubt. Will Montgomery, who was off to a nice start at center, suffered a season-ending broken fibula injury in Week 4.

The injuries exposed a few things, such as a weak point at right guard. Vladimir Ducasse had five holding penalties and four false starts, then lost his job to Patrick Omameh, who then gave it back to Ducasse for the final two games. Neither player showed enough to be a consistent starter in this league at a high level.

Hroniss Grasu’s NFL career began sooner than expected. He showed his athleticism in the screen game, handled the calls and impressed his teammates, but he needs to get stronger,

and appeared at fault for the botched two-point conversion at the end of the Broncos loss.

Grasu gained important experience, but has much to learn.

What’s to come: Is Long going to be a right tackle next season, with Leno at the blind side? That prevents Long from having to learn a third position in four NFL seasons, and gives the Bears quite the bargain at an expensive spot at left tackle – Leno is not a right tackle, although Long can play either.

Next for Dave Magazu and Pace is finding a starting right guard, whether it’s through the draft, free agency, or bringing back Omameh or Ducasse and hoping for improvement.

When camp begins, all eyes will be on Grasu. As a thirdround pick, Grasu will have the pressure to live up to his draft spot in his second season, with the benefit of a full offseason in the team’s strength and conditioning program. Work ethic and smarts are not an issue for Grasu; now he’ll need to show the abilities to make good on Pace’s selection. If so, the Bears could be set at four O-line spots for more than just 2016.

Frustrated mother takes out her anger on her children Dear Abby: I am the mother of four. My children are wonderful, but they really don’t listen. Instead of sitting down and talking to them, I scream and call them names. Then, after they go to sleep, I feel extremely guilty.

Every year, he takes a week off to go to another state and play golf.

When he returns, he compiles all the photos he has taken onto a disk.
