Summer camp concerns also discussed

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Several residents showed up to Tuesday’s Village of Diamond board meeting to support Elijah Martinez and his idea to start a summer day camp for area children.

Mayor Terry Kernc, along with an investigator from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Lisa Morel Las, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, met with Martinez last week after it was brought to their attention that Martinez was operating a kids’ summer camp at no cost to residents that used the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo on the advertising. Martinez is not affiliated with Big Broth-

ers Big Sisters.

Kernc said Friday she told Martinez he couldn’t operate the camp on village property without appropriate safeguards in place.

Martinez was invited to the board meeting, where the board discussed licensing and permit regulations and fees in order for a summer camp to exist in the village.

During public comment, a parent spoke in favor of having a day camp. She said not every child has two parents in the home, and she felt such a program would benefit the area kids.

“Several of us are here to find out what we need to do to have a program for the children,” she said. “We’d like to see the kids safe and have something to do.”

Board members voted unanimously to pass an ordinance establishing comprehensive park rules and regulations.

“You identified a need the village has,” Kernc told Martinez. “Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I feel much better knowing we will have this in place.”

The ordinance outlines some general rules regarding hours of operation, restricted areas, and use of playground equipment. In addition, it prohibits alcoholic beverages, weapons, fireworks, smoking, public indecency, disorderly conduct, gambling, controlled substances, battery and posting of printed or written material without prior consent.

To receive a permit to use the village property for programs, such as a day camp, the person or organization will need to file a written applica-

tion, sign an indemnification and reimbursement agreement, and show proof of insurance.

Programs must be provided by adults over the age of 21, who must agree to a background check. If the permit is denied, the village must provide a notice of denial stating why the permit was denied.

Jeff Johnson, a parent of one of the children who participated, said he agreed that the village needs more programming for children, but asked Martinez why he lied about so many things.

“I can appreciate Elijah and all the kids had a good time,” he said during the meeting.

“He might have a good heart to help others, but I want to know why he lied about Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

Martinez said he has publicly apologized, but offered no answers.

Morris girl will be honored at Crohn’s walk Saturday, also will tell her story

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – On Saturday, 8-year-old Ayla Phillips of Morris and her family will make the hour journey to Montrose Harbor in Chicago where Ayla will be recognized as the Local Honored Hero at the 2015 Chicago Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis walk. The walk is sponsored by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Illinois Chapter.

Ayla, along with her mother, Kim, her father, Jeremey, and her two brothers, Gage and Quaid Phillips, will walk 2.5 miles and hope to raise more than $3,000 for Crohn’s and colitis awareness. Ayla will give a speech, sharing the journey she has had since her diagnosis four years ago with Crohn’s disease.

Four years ago, Ayla was experiencing a childhood far away from the typical preschool days of running, playing and being carefree.

“Ayla was tired, her arms and legs were heavy, her stomach hurt, the only thing she wanted to do was color a picture or lie down and watch a movie,” Kim said. “She was also having stroke-like symptoms and facial paralysis, and visual and auditory hallucinations.”

Kim said at first doctors thought it was a ruse from an attention-seeking middle child, and labeled her as so on her chart, making it difficult for the family to get a doctor to take them seriously.

“I felt horrible. I had bad stomach aches, tired and when I would try to run my legs and arms were weak,” Ayla remembered.

After appointments at several Chicago-based children’s hospitals, one doctor found part of Ayla’s problem.

“They did find she was anemic and the low iron was

Survey: Looming statewide nursing shortage As baby boomers prepare to retire, many older nurses plan to as well

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A new survey suggests Illinois may soon face a shortage of registered nurses as more baby boomers in an aging workforce prepare to retire.

Nearly 53,000 registered nurses, or about 31 percent of the state’s RN population, were surveyed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

According to the survey, about one-third of RNs ages 55 to 65 or older intend to retire within the next five years, leaving voids in specialties such as psychiatric, school, home health and community care, according to the state agency.

Ensuring there are enough

nurses to meet the state’s health care needs is a priority for both the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers and area universities, said Janet Long, spokeswoman for hospital.

Morris hospital has historically offered scholarships, not only to students pursuing nursing degrees, but to those entering the health care industry in general, Long added.

“We try to encourage more people into this field,” shesaid.

Long said the Morris hospital remains aware of specialties at the hospital – critical care and surgery – where there’s a significant percentage of nurses nearing retirement age.

The goal is to prevent critical shortages, she said.

The state agency that con-

ducted the survey noted there will be fewer RNs ages 25 to 35 in the doctoral education pipeline to replace the retirees as specialties see an increase of retirements.

A strong partnership with universities and community organizations is key to preventing that shortage, Long said.

Jane Trainor, assistant professor and coordinator of one of Lewis University’s accelerated nursing degree programs, said Lewis offers a wide range of options for nursing degrees, with rolling enrollment.

Trainor said the university offers an accelerated bachelor’s-to-BSN program designed for students with a bachelor’s degree considering a career change.

Students can obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing in as little as 18 months, Trainor said.

Jackie Medland, RN, regional chief nursing officer with Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, noted that despite the looming shortage, there’s more registered nurses in today’s workforce than in past years.

According to IDFPD data, the number of licensed RNs statewide increased from 142,644 in 2001 to 177,614 in 2015.

Medland said the expected shortage will likely have a greater effect on areas of the state with smaller populations and fewer education offerings.

“It’s not a universal truth that all hospitals will struggle,” Medland said.

MORRIS – Bicycle enthusiasts are invited to ride in Morris’s first Tour de Corn.

The Morris Rotary Club and the Morris Kiwanis Club have teamed up to offer what is believed to be their first joint fundraiser, a scenic ride scheduled for Sunday that offers 28-, 40- and 62-mile routes.

“We both said, ‘Let’s try to bring money into the county instead of circulating money around the county,’ ” Rotary President Jim Bianchetta said.

The proceeds from the event will be split between the clubs, which are each providing volunteers for the event, and will be used for the clubs’ charities that contribute to the county.

By hosting a ride, the event will attract people from throughout the state, as well as around the country, bringing in new dollars, Bianchetta said.

The clubs are expecting 400 to 500 riders. In addition to bringing in funds for the clubs, the hope is the riders will spend some time at local businesses and perhaps return to Morris for later visits after seeing the town, said Scott Shannon, past president of the Kiwanis Club.

“It’s a great way to give back to the community and to give back to the businesses that support us,” Shannon said.

The hope is to make the ride an annual event. As a member of the Joliet Bicycle Club, Bianchetta has experience with planning large rides, some that have attracted more than 10,000 riders.

“It’s going to be an event we can grow, so we want to get it off the ground and continue to hold it in the future,” Bianchetta said.

Sunday’s ride is open for same-day registrations. Registration is from 7 to 10 a.m. and the day will wrap up at 4 p.m.

It begins at Ritchie Brothers, 2400 Ritchie Road, Morris, and marked routes as well as stocked rest stops will be provided. T-shirts for the riders include all of the ride’s sponsors, the largest being Black & Black law firm in Morris, Advantage Realty of Morris and E-Z Auto

12th annual outing, the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s “NotSo-Classic� Golf Tournament returns in June to Morris. “There are a lot of golf events in the area, but we try to make ours about networking,� said Caroline Portlock, executive director of the Grundy County Chamber.

Clubs will cut through the grass at Nettle Creek Country Club in Morris at 9 a.m. June 19, with sign-in registration and breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.

The course will feature activities on certain holes and a marshmallow-driving contest, incorporating teamwork to help build business relationships, Portlock said.

As usual, golfers are welcome to wear their most obnoxious shirts, Portlock said.

It’s become tradition to give a prize for the standout obnoxious shirt.

Some companies already have lined up exclusive hole sponsorships, but Portlock said two hospitality carts that carry snacks and refreshments are open for sponsorship.

The chamber hopes to land a photo sponsor, because foursomes will have their pictures taken.

Proceeds from the golf outing support programs and services provided by the Grundy County Chamber, and the chamber’s scholarship fund, which gives out two scholarships a year.

One scholarship is awarded to a student on a traditional educational path, meaning they have or will transition to college after high school, preferably majoring in business.

One nontraditional student also is selected, meaning they either are going back to school in the interest of switching

A new scoreboard was dedicated Friday in Gardner in honor of its late mayor, Tom Wise.

Scoreboard dedicated in honor of late mayor GARDNER – Friday night the Gardner community celebrated the scoreboard dedication at the Gardner Grade School baseball field in honor of the late Mayor Tom Wise.

The idea was driven by Jamie Wilkey, who asked for donations to fund the project, according to a news release from the village of Gardner. The Gardner Village Board unanimously agreed to pay for the scoreboard, D Construction donated the manpower and materials to install it, and the coaches did the final electrical hook up.

At the dedication, Kurt Kociss spoke on behalf of Wise’s accomplishments and lifelong dedication to Gardner. With the Gardner-South Wilmington youth baseball players lining the first and third base

lines, the ceremony began with the presentation of the American flag on the pitchers mound by the Boy Scout Troop 463 of Gardner, followed by the playing of the National Anthem, according to the release.

Gardner Grade School Superintendent Tony Whiston, Pastor Jan Chandler of the Church of Hope in Gardner and Gardner Mayor Mike Serena spoke at the event. Wise’s three children, Scott Wise, Lori (Wise) Patten and Tony Wise took turns throwing a ceremonial first pitch, and, shortly after, were joined by their families on the pitcher’s mound for a release of red, white and blue balloons.

“This was also a very fitting tribute to our service men and women for Memorial Day,” Serena said in the release.

About 75 people attended the event.

Mary L. Cacia (nee Staver), age 84. At rest Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, TX. Born January 17, 1931, in Joliet, IL to the late Louis and Evangeline (nee Tsqikisoglu) Staver.

Robert E. Dumbauld, 87, of Morris passed away Friday, May 22, 2015, in Morris.

Born February 28, 1928, in Hannibal, MO he was the son of the late Robert E. and Lillian (Young) Dumbauld.

At the age of 2, Bob moved to Seneca with his mother and step-father Fred West.

Bob was raised and educated in Seneca and remained close to his father visiting him and his family farm near Paris, MO. He joined the United States Army in March of 1946 where he would specialize in truck mechanics. Bob received an honorable discharge in November of 1947. After his military service, he attended school in St. Louis, MO majoring in diesel mechanics. After receiving his degree, he returned to Seneca and became employed as an engineer on the barge “A.L. Nash”.

On October 4, 1952, he married Beverly Anderson and they made their home in Morris. Shortly after their marriage, he began working as an auto mechanic for the Oldsmobile dealership. In 1967, Bob went into business for himself and opened Midwest Auto Service. He operated the auto shop until 1988 when he sold the business and opened up Bob’s Muffler Shop. In 1997, he retired from business but continued to work on “projects” in his garage.

Bob was featured in the Morris Herald in August of 2014 as “jack of all trades”. Bob loved to build anything mechanical from building his own cabin cruiser, kit cars to ultra-light airplanes, which he taught ROBERT W. CAMPBELL himself to fly. Bob enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and spending time with his wife Beverly and their Robert W. Campbell, age 67, of daughter in their cabin in Wisconsin Marseilles, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Illinois Valley Com- and Michigan.

He then became President of a packaging company in Geneva, Illinois, which he ran until his retirement in 1987.

A life-long golfer, Pete was a member of the Morris Country Club for 68 years and was Club Champion 13 times. During his tenure as President of the Club, he designed and oversaw the construction of the Club’s second nine. He remained an active golfer until last year, shooting his age many times over the years.

Pete was preceded in death by Fern, his wife of 64 years; his brother, Armand of Culver City, CA; and his parents, Batista and Olivia Trucano.

He is survived by his children, Peter (Louise) of Downers Grove, Mike (Doreen) of North Oaks, MN, John (Maria Henly) of Minneapolis, MN, Anne (Charles) Sincerbeaux of Weston, MA; daughter-in-law, Judy of Orono, MN; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Pete’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service that will be held at the Morris Country Club at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30th.

Ayla is in remission from her Crohn’s, a sign the medication is working. She also is in remission from a six-year battle with lung issues since taking the 6mp, which may have been related to her Crohn’s.

She is moving on from that stage in her life and is enjoying being an active kid.

But those same enzymes can work wonders in marinades. That is, so long as you don’t let the meat linger too long in the pineapple juice.

About 20 minutes is plenty for most meats.

The problem with pineapple (not counting loose gelatin) is that we routinely toss about 25 percent of our fruit when we throw out the core.

Admittedly, the core is more fibrous than the rest of the pineapple. But as an avid snacker of the pineapple core, I think this issue is minor.

Solving for the extra fiber is quite simple: Cut the core down to smaller pieces (think tiny dice or thin slices), or cook it to soften.

For example, you could slice the core thinly into coins for easy snacking.

And since pineapples run a few bucks a pop, buying them frequently translates into considerable savings when compared to an actual trip to Hawaii, particularly when you’re carting along four girls, as I would be.

Admittedly, the pineapple is a tad less exotic.

Still, it’s a great sweet summer treat. Pineapple gets its unmistakable sweetness from natural sugars, of course, but this tropical fruit also is a fantastic source of vitamin C and fiber.

But here’s another thing to get excited about: Pineapples are packed with protein-tenderizing enzymes that can do very cool things in the kitchen.

You also could grill the coins and drizzle them with honey. Or dice the core, saute it in just a splash of oil, then spoon over Greek yogurt for a dessert.

Or pickle cubes of the core with hot water, vinegar, sugar and maybe a pinch of red pepper flakes.

In this recipe, I take the core of a pineapple and pair it with citrus juice and shrimp to make a summertime classic – ceviche.

The acid and enzymes in the pineapple essentially “cook” the raw shrimp, but you also can use cooked shrimp or fish, if you prefer.

If so, you can reduce the marinating time to about 15 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the shrimp, lime juice and orange juice.

Toss well, then refrigerate. For a tender ceviche, marinate for 30 minutes.

For a firmer texture, let marinate for 1 to 2 hours.

Once the shrimp has marinated, drain and discard the juice. Return the shrimp to the bowl and add the chopped pineapple core, onion, chilies, ginger (if using), avocado and cilantro.

Toss well, then season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with butter lettuce leaves (to use as wraps and cups). Offer sliced radishes and lime wedges on the side as toppings.

The dish can be prepared ahead.

To do so, cover tightly after draining and tossing with the onion and pepper, then refrigerate.

About 30 minutes before serving, add the avocado and cilantro.

Wantland continues on comeback trail

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com At the start of the spring season, Morris’ Jake Wantland had overcome two hip surgeries in two years to qualify for the Illinois Top Times meet at Illinois Wesleyan University in the 800 run.

He continued to run during the outdoor season, taking part in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200, as well as some relay events, in different meets throughout the year. He broke the school record in the 3,200 at a meet in Plano.

On Friday, Wantland won the championship in the 800 at the Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Sectional, finishing in a school-record time of 1:56.33.

The finish qualified him for the Class 2A state meet on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this weekend. His time at the sectional was the second-best in the state in 2A, trailing only Stanford Olympia’s Connor Stine.

“If anyone is deserving of this, it’s him,” Morris coach Bill Lauer said about Wantand.

“He has worked very hard to come back from his two surgeries. He’s only going to have the 800 to run in the state meet.

If he runs the way he did in the sectional, I think he has a good chance to come home with a medal.

“It’s exciting. He’s had quite a battle in his career with Connor Hickey of LaSalle-Peru and he will be in that race. They have paced each other in previous races, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out this weekend. Jake broke two school records this year and he did quite a bit for us all year. I am happy for him.”

While we’re on the postseason front, Morris’ Leona Burton just missed getting on the stand in the long jump at the girls state meet over the weekend, finishing 10th. Teammate Madi Mayberry did not qualify for the finals.

The Redskins’ girls soccer team saw its two-year regional title streak snapped when it lost to Joliet Catholic Academy, 5-1, last week.

Still alive, however, are the Morris baseball and softball teams, and they could repeat last year’s feat of dual regional titles on the same site. Both teams play their Class 3A regionals at Ottawa Township High School. The softball team has the top seed and was scheduled to play its opening postseason game Tuesday, but the weather didn’t cooperate. As a result, the Redskins will play Plano at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The baseball team, meanwhile, is scheduled to play its regional semifinal game against LaSalle-Peru at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the neighboring Ottawa baseball field. If either or both teams win Wednesday, they will play for the regional title at 11 a.m.

Saturday.

At the girls track state meet last week, both Seneca in Class 1A and Minooka in 3A had quite a few participants.

Seneca placed 12th as a team in the 1A meet with 20 points, behind four individual performances and a relay.

The triple jumping sister combination of of Lexi and Cora Wilkinson placed second and ninth, respectively. Lexi, a senior, jumped 36 feet, 6 1⁄2 inches to place second, while sophomore Cora took ninth (35-61⁄2 inches) to also gain allstate honors. Cora Wilkinson, who also came back to finish eighth in the 300 hurdles (47.57 seconds), just started triple jumping this season.

Willow Stuedemann placed fourth in the 100 (12.54) and the Irish’s 3,200 relay placed seventh (9:53.93) with team members Sarah Virgo, Lexi Bogren, Carina Collet and Eva Bruno.

Minooka, meanwhile, received a second-place finish from senior Ashleigh Wilson in the 400, with a school record 55.54, and she also placed fifth in the 200 (25.35). Sophomore Ashley Tutt placed seventh in the 3,200 (10:54.55).

STAFF REPORTS SOUTH WILMINGTON – Emily Foley drove in two runs in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday’s Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Regional championship game, then made those two runs stand up as the Panthers downed Dwight, 2-1, to claim the title.

Foley allowed only three hits and a walk while striking out seven. The one run she allowed was unearned.

Her hit in the third drove in Julie Chambers and Kylie King, while Sydney Perkins also helped the offense for

“This was a classic regional championship between two real good teams and two real good pitchers battling,” G-SW coach Jon Posing said. “We were lucky enough to come out on top. It was well played by both teams. Unfortunately, someone had to lose.”

In boys track, Minooka junior Justin Wolz won Class 3A Plainfield North Sectional titles in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. He will be making his first trip to the state meet.

Wolz won the 110 hurdles in 14.53 and then took top honors in the 300 hurdles in 39.03.

Minooka’s Peter Andreano (first, high jump, 6-7), Kevin Lam (second, shot put, 53-11) and Ryan Pullara (fourth, pole vault, 13-9) qualified in field events.

Andreano is one of four athletes with the highest qualifying jump.

Minooka’s Soren Knudsen finished seventh in the 3,200 (9:25.1) but qualified on time.

The Indians also took third place in the 400 relay (42.29) with Colin Marchio, Maceo Findlay, Mitch Miller and Victor Turpin, and also third in the 800 relay (1:28.94) with Brandon Adams replacing Marchio in the same lineup.

Miller was on those two sixth-place relays last year while Turpin joined him in the 800 relay a year ago. Minooka placed second (3:19.76) in the 1,600 relay to qualify, as well.

Let GOP straw poll expire Iowa Republicans made major changes for this year’s straw poll, eliminating the pay-to-play practices of auctioning space for exorbitant fees. But the reforms may be too little, too late.

Caucus candidates and prospects gathering in Des Moines for the GOP Lincoln Day Dinner earlier this month talked about everything but the straw poll. You’d think straw poll organizing would have been critical at the biggest gathering of Iowa Republicans yet this year. But none of the 11 presidential prospects who spoke referenced the Aug. 8 event.

According to the National Journal, only one, Dr. Ben Carson, has indicated he’ll participate. Presidential prospect Jeb Bush told Iowa City supporters Saturday he will purposely avoid the straw poll.

“I just don’t do straw polls,” he said. “It has nothing to do with the caucuses that will ultimately determine how people are going to be successful.”

For many Iowans, the straw poll can be a fun day with lively speeches and festivities. But the outcome always has been determined largely by outside donors.

Well-funded campaigns bused, housed and fed attendees, essentially paying for their straw poll turnout.

Inside Iowa, most astute voters were in on the ruse.

Outside the state, the straw poll results offered a brief, inaccurate glimpse of the campaign. Since 1980, the straw poll has picked the ultimate caucus winner half of the time. “For all the hullabaloo

that surrounds it, the Republican straw poll is actually a pretty unreliable predictor of the ultimate Iowa caucus winner,” the Des Moines Register reported in June.

Bush intends to be at a South Carolina issues forum on straw poll day.

“All the resources ought to go to the thing that matters, which is the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1,” he said. “What’s relevant is running a campaign, creating a strategy, building a good team toward success, which is in the primaries, and doing it in a way that makes it possible to actually win the general election, which is the whole objective.”

Seems a sound strategy.

But Iowa GOP chairman Jeff Kaufmann kept the pressure on.

“We hope Gov. Bush rethinks his decision and realizes that grassroots will only grow in Iowa if he waters them,” Kaufmann tweeted about Bush’s decision. “We don’t buy this excuse and neither will Iowans.”

Actually, we’re buying it.

So will our region’s independent-minded voters, who make up a plurality of Quad-City registered voters.

As of May 1, no-party or independent registered voters outnumbered Republicans or Democrats in Davenport, Bettendorf and Eldridge. Only LeClaire reports a plurality of registered Republican voters.

Kaufmann should keep in mind what all of the candidates already have figured out. The caucus winner – indeed the ultimate nominee – must be the one who draws new people to the party.

Height of hypocrisy for Madigan SPRINGFIELD – “We need taller interns,“ a statehouse wag told me my first year covering the Illinois Capitol.

I was a bit perplexed.

After all, at 6 foot, 4 inches, I’ve never considered myself too short.

But back in 1988, folks wanted someone tall enough to peer into a high window of the governor’s office and tell the assembled reporters what was going on during a meeting between Speaker Michael Madigan and then-Gov. Jim Thompson.

It’s a rite of May in Springfield that the legislative leaders hold private meetings and hammer out a budget and assorted other legislation. And Mike Madigan has always been a power broker in those.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has instituted “working groups” where a variety of legislators – not just the leaders – are included in private discussions.

That apparently doesn’t sit too well with Madigan or his counterpart Senate Presi-

“If the governor is serious about the changes he is proposing, the right thing to do now is for us to bring these issues into the open and have a constructive and open discussion, vote and see what steps need to be taken from there,” Madigan said.

Over the years, as a statehouse reporter, I’ve spent countless hours camped outside the governor’s office waiting for Madigan to emerge. I’m not particularly keen on the current working groups keeping out the press and the public. Pardon me, but public policy should be formulated in public.

Voters should know what sort of political horse trading is taking place – and be able to weigh in – before a deal takes place. That said, it is the height of hypocrisy for Madigan to condemn the

meetings for being private.

After all, he has been conducting secret negotiations with governors since before some members of the General Assembly were born.

And he has promoted a legislative process about as transparent as a slab of concrete. Sure there are legislative committees and debates. But Madigan pulls the strings and decides if and when bills will be called for a vote. It’s hardly a transparent process.

But Madigan says he wants more transparency.

What next? Hugh Hefner condemns promiscuity? Michael Vick joins PETA? Rod Blagojevich calls for reform and renewal?

And Michael Madigan condemns secrecy?

Give me a break.

At the bridge table, if one side is laughing, the other is usually crying. Today’s deal occurred during a pairs event, where overtricks were important because each score was compared with the other pairs holding the same cards.

How should South try for the maximum in this deal? He is in four spades, and West leads the heart queen.

North used a transfer bid to show five-plus spades and at least zero points. South, with a maximum, fourcard spade support and a doubleton, jumped to three spades – this is known as a superaccept. North, who had been undecided between inviting and insisting on game, now had no qualms in bidding four spades.

South saw four losers: one spade and three clubs. If he had immediately led a trump, the defenders surely would have taken those tricks.

Instead, declarer had to try to jettison those club losers. He won the first trick, cashed dummy’s diamond queen (the honor from the shorter hand first), played a diamond to his ace, discarded a club on the diamond king, and, because it could not cost, pitched another club on the diamond jack.

If it had been ruffed with a low spade, South would have broken even. Here, though, East had to ruff with his spade ace, so the contract made with an overtrick for a tied top.

Behavioral techniques can treat premature ejaculation Dear Doctor K: I’ve been experiencing premature ejaculation. What is the most effective way to treat this?

Dear Reader: Premature ejaculation (PE) occurs when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates too quickly and without control. In other words, ejaculation occurs before a man wants it to happen.

Several factors may contribute to this problem. Diabetes, problems with the thyroid gland or inflammation of the prostate are common culprits. Stress, depression and other emotional factors can also play a role. But most men with PE are healthy.

Sometimes, PE goes away on its own. Finding ways to relieve stress or other psychological issues may help. If PE continues, treatment may in-

My colleague Dr. Harvey Simon recommends starting with behavioral therapy. It is safe and simple, and helps about 60 to 90 percent of men.

Here are three methods you can try, alone or in combination. Many people find that consulting an experienced sex therapist is helpful in learning the behavioral therapy techniques: (1) The “pause and squeeze” technique is the most effective method. When you feel an orgasm developing too early, stop sexual

activity. Then either you or your partner gently squeezes the shaft of the penis between the thumb and two fingers for about 20 seconds. You relax the squeeze and start sexual activity again. This technique somehow leads the body to learn how to delay ejaculation without the squeeze. Several of my patients say that this technique has also worked for them when the sexual activity is not actual sex with a partner, but self-stimulation.

(2) The “start-stop” method. Bring yourself close to orgasm with the aid of a partner or by self-stimulation. Before climaxing, stop, relax, and then begin again. Repeat the cycle until you can no longer prevent ejaculation. The goal is to recognize when orgasm is about to happen and to put

on the brakes.

(3) Kegel exercises. Women and men use these exercises to treat urinary incontinence.

They can also help men with PE. You can identify the pelvic muscles by stopping the flow of urine in midstream. Once you’ve learned to control these muscles, you practice tightening them while your bladder is empty.

You should hold each contraction for 10 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds, then repeat the cycle 10 times, three or four times a day.

As for medications, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are particularly effective. SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa) and fluoxetine (Prozac). Some men don’t respond to an SSRI alone. If this is the case, you may get good

results by also taking one of the medicines for erectile dysfunction medicine: sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis) and avanafil (Stendra).

Another option is to apply an anesthetic (numbing cream) to the head of the penis.

This decreases sensation and reduces the stimulation you experience during sex.

Some “climax control” or “extended performance” condoms apply a mild anesthetic to the penis.

It is likely that one or more of these treatments will work for you.
