MORRIS – I would like to tell the readers about something new that took place at Saratoga this year and something new that will take place at Saratoga next year.

Last summer one of the social workers at Saratoga formed a Character Committee that met during the summer to plan a yearlong series of events that would focus the entire school, both students and staff, on the importance of good character traits. On the first day of school the committee kicked off its program by performing a song and dance parody to a popular tune focusing on character.

Both staff and students thoroughly enjoyed watching this group of teachers sing and dance about character traits.

Every hallway in the school was named after a certain character trait with signs and decorations. Each month the entire school focused on a certain character trait. At the end of the month, each homeroom selected a character winner and a school-wide assembly was held to recognize two overall winners from each grade level and staff members who were selected by the staff.

COMMUNITY PULSE KATHY PERRY The assemblies also provided an opportunity for students and staff to further celebrate by sharing creative displays of that month’s character trait.

The student winners were then given the opportunity to attend a school board meeting. Both board members and administration thoroughly enjoyed watching the students get recognized at the meeting while their proud parents sat in the audience.

One of the most enjoyable aspects for me was listening to Mr. Zweeres read what the teachers had written about how each student displayed that month’s character trait.

The finale of the program involved the entire school participating in the “Character Shuffle.”

Each grade “shuffled” by singing or chanting a description of a character trait to the tune of the Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle.” All of this took place while the

Now I want to tell you about something new that will take place next year at Saratoga.

This year the leadership team spent a lot of time examining the entire school schedule.

One of my and many others’ favorite things about Saratoga is that it is a pre-K through eighth-grade building.

Although we love that aspect of Saratoga, it presents many obstacles when it comes to the school schedule. We basically run an elementary school schedule and a junior high school schedule with both “schools” needing to have access to music, art and physical education. After completely dissecting the schedule, we arrived at a more student-focused schedule for next year.

Junior high teachers will have more time with their students to allow for a more student-centered approach to their teaching. We had a meeting with our junior high teachers this week to talk about the advantages of the new schedule and the

enthusiasm in the room felt contagious! The teachers were excited about how they plan to use the extended instruction time with their students.

The junior high schedule also allows for students to take some exploratory classes such as Movies that Teach, Careers and Keyboarding. The elementary grades also have longer blocks of uninterrupted instruction time. Another advantage of the revised schedule is that there will be more time for all grades to incorporate enrichment and intervention time.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about some of the new things that are going on at Saratoga School. We are proud of the work our leadership team, staff, students and families do in an effort to continually improve Saratoga School.

Morris High School Class of 2015 gathers on field for last time as students

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As the sun was setting Friday night in Morris, the 2015 senior class walked onto the football field for the last time as students of Morris Community High School.

The realization that they were leaving behind some of the greatest memories of their childhood seemed to radiate around the gym as they lined up to make that final walk.

“I’m going to miss all of my teachers and all of my friends here,” Hannah Cabada said.

Others will carry with them treasured memories of their extracurricular activities and the championships they won.

“Winning regional in soccer was the highlight of my time here,” Justin Crowther said.

His teammate Ricardo Del Toro said he too will remember that regional soccer game and the goal he made, but there was far more to his high school career.

“I’ll miss the childhood friendships I’ve made throughout the years,” he said.

In addition to the winning goal, a highlight of his high school years was getting into the National Honor Society,

After Principal Kelly Hussey lined the students up to take that final walk, he

grabbed a microphone and spoke to them.

“You characterize one of the best classes for being open, friendly and interacting with each other,” Hussey told the students. “Because relationships and communication are

very powerful in this world, there is no doubt in my mind you are off on the right foot.”

He said the Class of 2015 was diverse from athletics to the classroom, noting each student was great in his or her own way, whether it was

on the stage in the fall play or musical, or marching onto the field as a member of the Marching Redskins.

The student was disciplined per school policy and is required to complete a threat assessment before returning to school, according to the news release from last week. The news release that followed Monday stated the student would not be back to school this year.

Administrators contacted each student involved, as well as their parents, to inform them of the situation. On Friday afternoon, a note was sent home with all students regarding the incident.

MORRIS – The cloud of worry emanating from a leakprone 450-gallon hot water tank at the top of Saratoga Tower in Morris is no more.

On Friday, after months of planning and fundraising, the Grundy County Housing Authority replaced the domestic hot water storage tank, which sits atop resident apartments on the seventh floor.

GCHA CEO Brent Newman said the system was designed in 1975 and in desperate need of replacement.

“We are relieved,” Newman said. “We needed to avoid a chance of the storage tank failing. It could’ve been really bad.”

Newman said the replacement was forced into action Friday morning when a water heater failed.

Plumbing companies recommended to go ahead with replacement of the whole system, as it is designed to work in unison. Luckily for GCHA, funds were in place.

The hot water tank in the building had been leaking, but funding cuts have made it difficult for the organization to address the matter, according to a news release from the GCHA. GCHA was able to raise about $20,000 from donors in the past year.

Newman said about $14,000 to $15,000 was raised through the First Midwest Bank Draw Down during the Grundy County Corn Festival, Thrivent Financial Services and the Morris Rotary Club.

The rest came from individual donors.

Although the housing authority fell short of the estimated $24,000 required to replace the tank, it will be able to use funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to make up the difference.

Those funds were an nounced in February, but because of regulatory requirements, were not released until recently.

The new domestic hot water system, installed by Countywide Plumbing, ultimately provides a more stable source of hot water and saves money in energy costs, Newman said.

The seven-story public housing building provides federally subsidized homes for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

MORRIS – If you asked veteran Carter Corsello 30 years ago if he planned to return to Grundy County and raise his family, he might have quoted you a line from a classic movie.

“I perhaps would have said like George Bailey in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ that I wanted to see the world,” he told the crowd at the Morris Memorial Day ceremony Monday held in Morris Community High School due to rain. John Martin Steele VFW Post #6049 hosted the ceremony.

Corsello, of Morris, was the event’s keynote speaker and spoke of 22 and a half years of active duty in the army. Major Corsello served more than 10 years overseas, including three combat deployments, three regular tours and an operational deployment with the United Nations.

“The U.S. government allowed me to see far more of the world than I thought possible.

Veterans of all the services, during peace and in times of conflict, also saw the world.

And though this is not the day to memorialize living veterans, it is a day to memorialize a special kind of veteran, all of those veterans that gave their last full measure,” he said.

Corsello encouraged the audience to take notice of the memorials all around the county as they go about their days. He noted the ones that sit on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn, those inside the courthouse, Veteran’s Park in Minooka and the memorials at Coal City Intermediate School.

Gile addressed the students and family members who filled the stands and stood four and five deep around the fence to witness their loved one graduate.

“We survived many struggles together,” she said. “Remember when we first entered high school together and had to figure out where everything was, who everyone was, and how on Earth the building only had two stories but also a

third floor.”

Her witty speech made reference to things only her class would understand, but drew laughter from the crowd.

Before the diplomas were handed out and the tassels turned, the administration recognized many of the students, including 12 who were asked to stand before they head off into the armed forces.

The class consisted of nine

students who were undetermined as to their next step, but also two who were headed to a trade or technical school, 39 who were headed directly into the work force and 159 who were headed to a two or four year college.

Morris Community High School seniors received $1.2 million in scholarships to move them forward. Superintendent Pat Halloran said this included local scholarships as well as students who received full-ride scholarships directly from institutions.

He is survived two daughters,

Kristen (Kirby) Woods, Washington IL and Kelly Kruger, Ransom; one son, Kurt (Kelly) Kruger, Kinsman; four grandchildren, Grant and Kate Woods and Bailey and Kenley Kruger; and his father, William Kruger Sr. rural Ransom. Siblings, include four sisters, Sandy (Richard) Roenfeldt, Ottawa, Linda Bookout, Kinsman, Karen (Jim) Hopp, Dayton OH and Pam (Jim) Siedentop, Ransom. Bill was a loved and respected uncle to 27 nieces and nephews. By BRUCE SHIPKOWSKI The Associated Press TRENTON, N.J. – Born to an electrical engineer, and later a precocious and dashing young man who attained an Ivy League education, John Nash seemed destined for a life of stunning success. That he achieved, winning a Nobel Prize in 1994, but not without a struggle with mental illness that would make him a household name even more so than his achievements in mathematics.

Nash had read the classic “Men of Mathematics”

by E.T. Bell by the time he was in high school.

He planned to John Nash follow in his father’s footsteps and studied for three years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh – now Carnegie Mellon University – but instead followed his passion for math.

He then went to Princeton, where he worked on his equilibrium theory and, in 1950, received his doctorate with a dissertation on noncooperative games.

The thesis contained the definition and properties of what would later be called the Nash equilibrium.

But it was while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959, when his wife, Alicia, was pregnant with their son, that schizophrenia began to emerge, a yearslong fight that was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning blockbuster “A Beautiful Mind.”

The Nashes died in a car accident late Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86; she was 82.

“John’s remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges,” Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement.

2001’s “A Beautiful Mind” was based on an unauthorized biography by Sylvia Nasar, who wrote that Nash’s contemporaries found him “immensely strange” and “slightly cold, a bit superior, somewhat secretive.” Much of his demeanor likely stemmed from mental illness. “A Beautiful Mind” won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, and generated interest in John Nash’s life story.

LOS ANGELES – Anne Meara, the loopy, lovable comedian who launched a standup career with husband Jerry Stiller in the 1950s and found success as an actress in films, on TV and the stage, has died.

Jerry Stiller and son Ben Stiller say Meara died Saturday.

She was 85. No other details were provided.

The Stiller family released a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday describing Jerry Stiller as Meara’s “husband and partner in life.”

“The two were married for 61 years and worked together almost as long,” the statement said.

Born in Brooklyn on Sept.

20, 1929, she was a red-haired, Irish-Catholic girl who struck a vivid contrast to Stiller, a Jewish guy from Manhattan’s Lower East Side who was two years older and four inches shorter.

As Stiller and Meara, they appeared in comedy routines that joked about married life and their respective ethnic backgrounds.

They logged 36 appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and were a successful team in Las Vegas, major nightclubs, on records and in commercials (scoring big for Blue Nun wine with their sketches

They were beloved New Yorkers, well known to their Upper West Side neighbors.

The marriage lasted, but the act was dissolved in the 1970s as Meara resumed the acting career she had originally sought.

She appeared in such films as “The Out-of-Towners,” ‘’Fame,” ‘’Awakenings” and, directed by her son, “Reality Bites.”

Meara was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for her supporting role on “Archie Bunker’s Place,” along with two other Emmy nods, most recently in 1997 for her guest-starring role on “Homicide.”

She won a Writers Guild Award for co-writing the 1983 TV movie “The Other Wom-

She also appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including a longtime role on “All My Children” and appearances on “Rhoda,” “Alf” and “The King of Queens.”

She shared the screen with her son in 2006’s “Night at the Museum.”

Meara also had a recurring role on CBS’ “Murphy Brown” and on HBO’s “Sex and the City.” In 1975, she starred in CBS’ “Kate McShane,” which, though short-lived, had the distinction of being the first network drama to feature a woman lawyer.

Despite her theater background, Meara, with her bright eyes and cheeky smile, was a quick study as a comedian when she and Stiller performed in improv groups.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Less than a week ago, the Minooka boys volleyball team clinched the Southwest Prairie Conference title with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 win over Plainfield Central.

On Monday, the two teams met again in the quarterfinals of the Minooka Regional, with the berth against top-seeded Joliet Catholic Academy at stake.

On their home floor, the Indians (22-13) got off to a strong start, racing to a 15-5 lead in the opening set en route to a 25-12 win.

Plainfield Central rebounded and won the second set 25-22 before claiming victory in the final set 27-25 to advance to the next round.

“We lost to them last Wednesday by two points in the third set,” Plainfield Central coach Alex Hurlburt said. “All week in practice, we were analysing everything we could, trying to figure out how we could make up those two points.

“After we lost the first set, I told the guys that any team can lose a first set. The key is how you adjust to it in the next set. We might not be the biggest or fastest team, but we are one of the smartest. I credit our guys with being able to make the adjustments that we needed to.”

Minooka got a bulk of its offensive firepower from Brandon Baranski (21 kills) and Danny Beaudin (8 kills), while Gage Wuestenfeld (14 kills) and Wes Rogman (6 kills) were the go-to hitters for Plainfield Central.

Minooka’s Shane Chetney went on an excluded service point run in the first set after a Baranski kill got the Indians the serve with the set tied 5-5.

By the time Chetney was done, he had two aces and Minooka led 16-5.

In the run were kills by Grant Ooms, a block by Luke Hermann and a kill and a block

by Baranski. Armed with the big lead, the Indians cruised to the victory.

At first glance, you may think these hard-shelled reptiles are lost, they in fact know exactly what they are doing. These migrations are often to nesting sites that are near water.

While making their way across the dangerous asphalt, these creatures are extremely susceptible to oncoming traffic.

In fact, I have unfortunately even witnessed cold-hearted individuals deliberately veer to crush the helpless creatures. It sickens me.

Turtles of many species nest in locations a distance from their watery habitats.

These instincts are strong so the terrapins often venture through areas where they are not normally seen and often pay the ultimate consequence for their efforts.

At first this may not seem a big deal, but many experts believe that the overall and continuing decline in turtle populations is greatly impacted from vehicle mortality.

You have to remember, if that female doesn’t make it to her nesting site, not only is she lost, but also none of her off-

First off, be sure to never put yourself in danger. If the roadway is too hazardous, it is not worth putting yourself or your family in harm’s way.

If you see a turtle making its way across a more manageable road, you can help it.

If possible, pull over, set your flashers, and let the turtle cross the road on its own. Whenever dealing with wild animals it is always best to handle them as little as possible.

There are times, however, when you may need to help the little gal along by moving it. If this is the case, grab the shell between the front and hind legs. Just be careful and

great sources on the Internet to check out. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources site has some great articles on this very topic.

I know it seems like a little thing. But we need to remember, even though turtles have survived and even thrived for many millennia, those years have all been in natural environments.

Miles of asphalt and cars ripping down highways are relatively new problems in the history of the species. If we can help out in a small way then we should.

Be careful this spring.

Keep watch for the creatures we share this world with and may you enjoy watching these most interesting reptiles the next time you head to the water.

“We made a lot of changes after the first set,” Hurlburt said. “In the first set, their

These two species are extremely aggressive. They also possess exceptionally long necks that can reach around and snap you if you grab the middle of their shells like you might with others turtles. You would be better to use a stick or something to help scoot those species along.

If you do help move the turtle, make sure to place it in the direction it was going.

Never turn it around and send it back the way it came. It will just reverse course and cross the road once more while attempting to make its way to its nesting grounds.

Their instincts to make it to their nesting site will prevail, so you always want to help them by moving them the proper direction.

Lawmakers still worlds apart I spent the better part of Wednesday asking folks around the Statehouse if they had anything positive to tell me. I went looking for anything that might indicate a silver lining to this increasingly nasty spring legislative session. Mostly, people just laughed at me.

Other than some individual personal developments, there just wasn’t much positivity around.

A gaming expansion bill appeared to be progressing.

But I’m told the governor is in no mood to sign it as long as his “Turnaround Agenda” is being ignored by the majority Democrats. The Senate Democrats, meanwhile, were expected to move legislation to help Chicago out of its horrific fiscal mess, but there’s still the problem with the governor’s refusal to do anything for the Democrats until he gets what he wants.

So, I came up with nothing.

The governor’s list of demands had been whittled down, but he still wasn’t backing off his insistence that the General Assembly give him at least some anti-union “right to work” local zones. He wanted a “causation” standard for workers’ compensation and a property tax freeze – which, even in watered-down forms, continued to be a nonstarter.

The list of demands went on and on. But in exchange, the governor was willing to support $3.5 billion in new revenues, which doesn’t sound too bad until you realize he also wanted the Democrats to agree to $3 billion in spending cuts. The governor’s folks thought they were being generous by offering more revenues than cuts, but the Democrats pointed out getting

VIEWS Rich Miller their people to vote for both tax hikes and huge spending cuts was pretty much impossible.

Instead, the Dems talked last week about sending the governor an unbalanced budget, telling him to cut as much as he could and then they’d come back and help provide the revenue to make the monster balance. They wanted to put the cuts on Rauner’s head, and his head only.

But it was more likely Rauner simply would veto the budget bill in its entirety and harangue the Democrats via a massive TV ad campaign for once again producing an “irresponsibly unbalanced budget.” And I’m hearing that when the clock strikes June 1, the governor’s list of 80 demands and concessions goes out the window and he will put his entire agenda back on the table and withdraw all the concessions, including (and especially) much-needed new revenues.

I got home Wednesday night and read Rauner’s op-ed in the State Journal-Register.

“If legislators are willing to reform how we do business, they will find me an eager partner,” the governor wrote.

“If they are not, then they should expect a very long extra session because I will keep fighting for major reforms.”

As I said, I got pretty much nothing in the way of good news. Sorry.

This is the same deal as in yesterday’s column, but in one of my classes, a woman holding the South cards made a very heavy weak jump overcall of three hearts. This understandably was passed out. How did the defense go against three hearts?

I had anticipated South’s intervening with two hearts, West’s raising to two spades, and East’s jumping to four spades. Then, as explained yesterday, East gets home by ruffing his low heart with dummy’s spade jack.

Against three hearts, West led her lowest spade. South saw four top losers (two hearts and two diamonds), so thought she would have to find the club queen to make her contract. However, after she won the first trick with dummy’s spade ace and led a trump, East went in with her king and shifted to her singleton club.

Declarer took that and played a high trump to East’s ace. Now East had to get West on lead to receive a club ruff. But did West hold the spade king or diamond ace?

West knew that her partner had led a singleton club. She had carefully dropped a suit-preference club three at trick three and also had played lowhigh in trumps.

So East, getting the message, led her diamond nine. West overtook and gave her partner the club ruff. Then East cashed the diamond king for down one. Pretty!
