When I think of newspapers, I always think of my grandpa.

Well, not just newspapers, really anything in print – books, magazines, brochures.

I picture him every morning sitting on the couch, leaning on the armrest, paper spread out on his lap. It’s a peaceful image until I remember how this most often was followed by grumblings and complaints about whoever was in office at the time.

I call this a memory, but really, at any given time to this day, you can witness him doing this.

This is his ritual – and as it is for many, a morning ritual.

And it was a ritual our Grundy County readers were missing out on – reading the day’s paper in the morning, over coffee, grumbling, before your busy day begins.

And lastly, what I’m most excited about is this right here – “Community Pulse,” a dedicated space in our paper for our local nonprofits, schools, organizations and sometimes staff members to write a column sharing news and information about their organization in their own words.

With change often comes reluctance, but we hope our readers will see all the benefits that come with it – even if it’s just reading your paper with your morning coffee.

Grundy-area teams join businesses in fundraiser for children

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – From saddle shoes to platforms to stilettos, then bowling shoes, community members bowled Saturday through the “Dances of the Decades” Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser.

This year’s Morris event housed seven groups from surrounding areas, raising more than $6,500 between business sponsors and organization/ team fundraising.

Lisa Morel Las, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, said this event is a thank you for those who raised money to support the children in the program.

“This is the 10th year we have had the bowling event in Morris. The people who register raise all of the money beforehand, and this is our thank you to them,” Morel Las said.

Keeping with the “Dances of the Decades” theme, the Grundy Bank team all dressed in ’50s attire. The group had the highest organization/team fundraising amount out of five other teams in its category.

Sara Grieff, assistant to Grundy Bank President and CEO Kevin L. Olson, said the bank has a charitable committee and staff try to support different area events.

Cassie Connor, loan processor for Grundy Bank, has been involved with Bowl for Kids Sake for four years.

“We participate because it is for a good cause and a fun time. We love knowing that we are helping to put a smile on another child’s face,” Connor said.

A group from the Grundy County Health Department was a first-time participant and exceeded its goal, with two larger donations from friends and family.

Girl Scouts put creative skills on display at first Powder Puff Derby

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Underneath Brooke Majchrowski’s Girl Scout vest, she sported a T-shirt of her favorite race car driver, Danica Patrick.

Majchrowski loves racing, so having a car in the first council-wide Girl Scout Powder Puff Derby on Saturday was exciting for her.

Along with friend Madison Cyranek, both of Troop 947 in Bolingbrook, she was having a blast. Cyranek already had raced her red derby car with a gold stripe. She came in third.

The Powder Puff Derby, held at the Joliet Girl Scout Gathering Place in Joliet, was a first for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, Program Director Candice Schmidt said.

Grundy County-area troops are part of that council.

The event is not only fun, but the girls had a chance to use their science, technology, engineering and math skills to develop the cars, she said.

The Powder Puff Derby is like the Boy Scouts’ long-established Pinewood Derby, but with a bit more flair. Cars of all colors, shapes and themes were lined up in the “pits.”

Lauren Bowlds, Troop 42142 in Wheaton, designed her car to look like a hot dog.

She eventually won an award for the best paint job.

“Because I just like hot dogs,” she said.

Like many of the girls, preparing the car for race day was a father/daughter project.

Dad Kenneth Bowlds helped shape the car, which comes as a block of wood. Together they oiled the wheels, hoping for extra speed, added weights and painted it.

The car kits come with weights, but it’s up to the car’s designers to decide where to strategically place them for the best outcome. The shape of the car could make all the difference in its speed, as could any add-ons, which add to the weight.

Elly Cervera, Troop 50325 in Elmhurst, believed it was

important to have a driver for her car, so she chose a squeaky rubber dog.

“She wouldn’t budge on that even though it slowed the car down,” said her father, Carlos Cervera.

Elly did everything on her car except cut out the shape.

Whatever the two did to Elly’s car, it worked. She came in first place in her heat race.

Girl Scouts from all over Illinois and Indiana came, 191 Scouts and 400 people total, Schmidt said.

An awards ceremony was held at the end of the event, with first, second and third place winners in each of the four Scout levels. Awards also went to best paint job, spectators’ choice, judges choice and best STEM design for aerodynamics and physics of design.

The event went great for the first year, Schmidt said.

Every Scout showed up with a car, ready to go.

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The DuPage River rushing over the dam at Channahon’s state park was a perfect setting last week for staging a mock swift water rescue.

Channahon Fire Protection District’s swift water rescue team held a training course at the park all day Thursday, culminating with the water rescue scenario Friday morning.

Firefighters from as far away as Wisconsin and as close as Minooka participated in the course that certified more than a dozen swift water technicians.

The scenario, said Channahon rescue team captain Kurt Lieberman, was that two boats came too close to the dam. The boaters panicked and went into the DuPage River. Eight victims – four manikins and four people – were either in the water or stranded on a small island, on both sides of the dam.

Lieberman, who has been on the water rescue team for eight years, said the rescuers used small boats and a boogie board or swam out to the victims. The first step is to get the victim calmed down so the rescuers can assess the situation and the person.

With rescue team members on either side of the dam, they called out information and instructions to one another.

They used ropes to bring people in and the boogie board as a flotation device for others.

“It went really smooth,” Lieberman said. “The guys used the knowledge from the last two days of class and put it to good use. They used proper techniques, good strategies and good teamwork.”

Last year Channahon Fire Protection District responded to 13 calls for water rescues as part of the multi-area Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. One resulted in a drowning.

As part of MABAS, Channahon responds not only to water rescues in its own district, but adjacent towns such as Shorewood, Coal City, Braidwood, Wilmington and Morris.

When a water rescue call goes out and escalates to a certain point, MABAS team 15 – Channahon – gets called.

“We have a pretty big span, we have a lot of water in the

area,” Lieberman said.

After the rescue scenario, the firefighters, under the direction of Instructor Emily Kane of Dive Rescue International, critiqued their work.

Each person had an assigned role to play, but how the rescue actually played out was not planned. Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis was one of the rescuers in the scenario. It was a learning experience for him, he told the group, because he’s typically on the other side of things. Rezin ready to get back to work in Springfield

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said she is excited about some of the advances she’s helped bring to fruition and she looks forward to returning to Springfield to address more community needs.

The opportunity she’s had to work on curriculum with Joliet Junior College will provide a two-year degree for students who want to work for the chemical corridor along Route 6 in Morris or for Exelon.

“The companies have worked together with JJC to create a degree for operating engineer or operating technician that will give them the education they need to work locally,” Rezin said.

She said the industry is looking at large turnover in the next few years, as those who have worked for the past 20 to 30 years prepare to retire.

“Not only is a diversion program cheaper, but it’s also morally the right thing to do.”

State Sen. Sue Rezin R-Morris She said the industry indicated there was a need for the two-year-degree and she is happy to see those interested in pursuing a career in that field can get those degrees locally.

“These are good-paying jobs,” she said. “An operations engineer makes over $90,000 and an operations technician makes over $70,000. They will go from high school to technical school and straight into the industry.”

Rezin said she also recently took two tours of Cook County Jail and wants to work toward juvenile justice reform.

“It’s important to understand it better,” she said. “Not only is a diversion program cheaper, but it’s also morally the right thing to do.”

She said she would like to see reform through Springfield.

“Cook County Jail is the largest mental health institution in the state,” Rezin said.

She said she would like to see the state proactively address mental health and drugs instead of just sticking people in the penal system, which she said is not the answer.

She said Grundy County instituting a Mental Health Court in addition to Drug Court is a step in the right direction.

Philanthropist, shopping mall developer Taubman dies at 91 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – A. Alfred Taubman, the self-made Michigan billionaire whose philanthropy and business success – including weaving the enclosed shopping mall into American culture – was clouded by a criminal conviction late in his career, has died. He was 91.

Taubman, who donated hundreds of millions of dollars to universities, hospitals and museums, died Friday night at his home of a heart attack, according to son Robert S. Taubman, president and CEO of Taubman Centers Inc. “This company and all that you stand for were among the greatest joys of his life,” Robert S. Taubman wrote in a message to the company’s employees. “He was so proud of what this wonderful company he founded 65 years ago has accomplished.”

cess spanned from real estate and art houses to the hot dog-serving A&W restaurant chain, for which he traveled to Hungary to figure out why the country’s sausage was so good.

He also became a major backer of stem cell research. But it was his rearrangement of how people shop – parking lot in front, several stores in one stop close to home – that left a mark on American culture.

Taubman Centers, a subsidiary of his Taubman Co., founded in 1950, currently owns and manages 19 regional shopping centers nationwide.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Pontiac, Michigan, to German-Jewish immigrants, Taubman worked at a department store after school near his family’s home, which was among the custom houses and commercial buildings developed in the area by his father.

He was a freshman at the University of Michigan when he left to serve in World War

II, around the time he stopped using his first name, Adolph.

When he returned to Ann Arbor to study art and architecture, he created small on-campus businesses to cover expenses, then transferred to Lawrence Technological University near Detroit to take night classes while working at an architectural firm as a junior draftsman.

Recognizing the booming post-war growth of the middle class, particularly in the Motor City, he launched A. Alfred his first real Taubman estate development company in 1950. His first project was a freestanding bridal shop in Detroit – but he had his eyes on something bigger. He’d noticed shoppers responding to the convenience of “one-stop comparison shopping opportu-

nity,” he wrote in his autobiography.

So when a friend suggested a shopping plaza in Flint, Taubman’s company did something radical for the time: stores were pushed to the back of the lot and parking spaces were put up front. It was a success and his young company took on larger-scale developments in Michigan, California and elsewhere in the 1950s and early ’60s.

Taubman served as chairman of Sotheby’s Holdings, Inc., parent company of Sotheby’s art auction house, from 1983 to 2000, and was a partner in international real estate firm The Athena Group before he was tangled in a price-fixing scheme. He was convicted in 2001 of conspiring with Anthony Tennant, former chairman of Christie’s International, to fix the commissions the auction giants charged. Prosecutors alleged sellers were bilked of as much as $400 million in

commissions.

He had pledged $100 million to the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute and its stem-cell research by 2011. He also financed public policy programs at Harvard, Brown University and the University of Michigan, which received several large donations.

Taubman donated millions and spoke passionately in support of the 2008 ballot initiative in Michigan that eased restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and enabled his namesake institute to conduct major research for diseases – including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, which claimed the life of his good friend, New York Sen. Jacob Javits, in 1986.

Actor Ben Powers, known for ‘Good Times’ TV role, dies at 64 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW BEDFORD, Mass.

– Actor Alton “Ben” Powers, known for his role in the 1970s CBS TV series “Good Times,” has died at age 64.

Powers died April 6 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, according to the Auclair Funeral Home, which is handling ar-

rangements. Details were not released.

Powers played football player Keith Anderson, the husband of Thelma Evans, played by Bern Nadette Stanis, in “Good Times.” The show was a Norman Lear hit about a black family in inner-city Chicago.

Powers also appeared as

Moochie in the 1980s CBS series “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer” with Stacey Keach, and had guest roles on other TV shows including “Gimmie a Break,” “Flamingo Road,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “The New Odd Couple,” and “Laverne & Shirley.”

Powers also acted in several 1980s movies includ-

ing “Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie,” “Things Are Tough All Over” and “The Man Who Loved Women.” His first TV roles were on NBC’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in.”

The Brooklyn, New York, native, was brought up by his grandparents in Providence, Rhode Island. He sang in the choir and was cantor at the

First Tabernacle Pentecostal church, according to his family. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and began his acting career at the Trinity Repertory Theater in Providence, his family said.

Powers is survived by his mother, two sisters, two uncles, two aunts, four nephews and three nieces.

Seneca places fourth in Teen Safe Driving program MORRIS HERALD NEWS SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation, Ford Motor Company Fund, Allstate Foundation, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois State Police announced recently the winning schools from each of the seven regions of the 2014-15 Operation Teen Safe Driving program.

In Region 2, Seneca High School placed fourth, according to a news release from the state.

OTSD began in 2007 in Tazewell County and expanded to a statewide program in 2008.

Since the onset of the program the teen fatalities have dropped by 54.2 percent percent. The program lets teens

create their own safe driving campaigns and share them with their peers, in an effort to promote safe driving habits among a traditionally highrisk age group.

A total of 102 schools completed this year’s OTSD program, modeled after the Ford Motor Company Fund’s nationally recognized Ford Driving Skills for Life teen safety program. These schools each received $2,000 to implement their safe driving programs.

Final judging was held in Springfield in March. The top five winning schools from each OTSD region receive prizes ranging from $500 to $2,500 to host a post-prom event, and an invitation to the Ford Driving Skills for Life “Ride and Drive” events.

Seneca cheered Reagan on all day, as well as making donations to the cause. In the second game of the day Somonauk edged Putnam County 5-4.

“Reagan said her favorite part was playing with all the girls,” Jessica Kuehn said.

“All the girls were excellent with her. Not just the Seneca team, but all of the teams. She just had a ball, and she slept very well that night.”

Next up, Seneca took on Putnam County. Following a trend, the Irish scored early to take the lead. Irish slugger Jenni Nugent roped an RBI double to knock in Robinson.

In the third inning, Nugent added another RBI double, this one scoring two. The Irish scored four in the inning to take a 5-2 lead, which they held through the conclusion of the six-inning time limit game.

Sangston went the distance for the Irish, striking out four and scattering six hits. Nugent was the big hitter with the pair of run-scoring doubles.

After the game ended, Reagan stepped to the plate to Swing for the Cause. She ran the bases, assisted by Irish speedster Karlie Cade.

SENECA – On April 11, Reagan Kuehn of Streator thought she was going to see a softball game or two. Kuehn and her mother, Jessica, traveled to Seneca to take in a round-robin tournament involving Seneca, Mendota, Somonauk and Putnam County that was being held to raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Cancer Research.

What Reagan didn’t know was that she was to be the guest of honor at the annual “Swing for the Cure” event.

Five-year-old Reagan had been diagnosed with leukemia Oct. 31, 2012 and has been receiving treatment at St. Jude’s.

“I didn’t tell her she was going to be the focus of the day,” Jessica Kuehn said. “I let her know when we got there. She was so surprised, and she just had the time of her life. She still talks about it all the time.”

Reagan’s mother’s family and friends have bonded together to “Fight for Reagan” in events throughout LaSalle County, in Streator, Long Point, and in other events.

“In discussing our annual tournament this spring in our preseason, I presented the opportunity to our softball team to not only give back to St. Jude’s and the Seneca community, but also for one special family, an event bigger than softball and more powerful than a simple Saturday tournament,” Stecken said. “The girls exceeded any expectation possible, not only dedicating the tournament to Reagan, but also performing numerous acts of outreach in the community, throwing out a ceremonial first pitch, running the bases with Reagan, and also presenting Reagan with her own game ball, Irish Princess gift bag, and spending an entire day playing softball, playing with Reagan, and Swinging for a Cure.”

The day was magical for the young lady, as she was

“As a coach, it was a pretty special moment to watch your team do something so powerful for one little girl and her family,” Stecken said. “They made this day so special for someone else, for something bigger than the game. It gave the girls on the team a bit of perspective on things that at that age kids don’t always have.”

The tournament began with Seneca hosting Mendota in the first game. The game began with Seneca smashing the ball, erupting for a five-run first inning, the big blow being a two-out, two-run double by Michaela Coughlin.

The Irish added four more in the fourth inning, two scoring on a home run off the bat of Lexi Trompeter. Rachel Sangston added an RBI double and left the mound after two scoreless innings. Becca Towne pitched the next two, with Taylor Bushman throwing the final three innings in scoreless relief, striking out three and earning the win as Seneca won 9-2.

After the first game, Reagan threw out the ceremonial first pitch, with the help of Towne, to Irish catcher Lyda Robinson.

In the tournament championship game, host Seneca took on Illinois Coaches Association Class 1A third-ranked Somonauk. Winning the coin flip, Somonauk sent its ace Nicole Krupp to the mound as the home team.

There’s an emerging conventional wisdom that the 2016 presidential race, once predicted to be mostly about economic issues, will instead be dominated by foreign policy.

“This is going to be a foreign policy election,” National Journal’s Ron Fournier said recently.

“A foreign policy election [more or less] is upon us,” declared “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd.

“We are likely to have a foreign policy election in 2016,” said the Weekly Standard’s William Kristol.

The argument is that the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, an ongoing crisis in Syria, the Iranian nuclear negotiations, Russian aggression and other international issues have elevated foreign policy and national security to a higher position in the presidential debate than seemed likely, say, a year ago. At the same time, with the unemployment rate down to 5.5 percent and job creation improving, economic concerns that dominated the 2008 and 2012 presidential races won’t be as critical in 2016.

But some newly released figures from the Labor Department are a reminder that economic anxieties underlie everything else – and the economy will likely remain the biggest factor in the next presidential race.

On April 2, the department reported that the average American household’s pre-tax income went down from mid2013 to mid-2014. That was on top of a similar decrease the previous year. Amid all the happy talk about the nation’s economic recovery and a falling unemployment rate, Americans are earning less and less.

VIEWS Byron York divided earners into five levels, and income went down for four of the five. Only in the highest fifth did income increase, from $164,647 to $166,048 – a 0.9 percent rise.

In other words, the top 20 percent did just a little better, while the bottom 80 percent did significantly worse.

On top of that, the damage done by the economic meltdown remains unrepaired.

Last year, the Russell Sage Foundation found that for households right in the middle of the American wealth distribution, net worth declined from nearly $88,000 in 2003 to about $56,000 in 2013.

Given that, how can 2016 be a foreign policy election?

Barring some Sept. 11-level catastrophe, how can foreign policy dominate a campaign when the incomes of 80 percent of Americans are going down, even during a so-called economic recovery?

There are a number of conservative thinkers who are working hard on just such plans, and potential candidates are interested. But right now, with campaigns still in the organizing phase, it’s too early to know who will embrace what proposal.

They’ll have to come up with something good. Yes, a strong foreign policy vision will be important.

But as critical as world events are today, Americans will likely be more concerned about other things when they go to the polls in November 2016.

What would he think about communications today?

At the bridge table, most nonexperts do not work out the distributions of the unseen hands; and, to be honest, often it does not matter. Checking winners, losers and high-card points is more fruitful. But occasionally a deal comes along in which hand distribution is important.

To test yourself, cover the South and West hands. South is in four hearts. West leads the club ace, under which East signals with the eight, starting a high-low (echo) with a doubleton. West cashes his club king and gives East a club ruff. What should East lead at trick four?

In the bidding, South rebid three hearts to show at least 5-5 in the majors. North understandably went with the 5-3 heart fit. (Three no-trump fails if the defenders attack diamonds early.)

West was tempted to lead a trump because he had such good spades, but that might not have worked well here. If South wins the trick, cashes the spade ace, ruffs a spade in the dummy, and draws trumps, West is squeezed in three suits.

Now back to East’s problem. He has seen declarer produce three clubs. So South’s initial hand distribution must have been 5-5-0-3. East must resist the temptation to try to cash the diamond ace, which is fatal.

Instead, he must exit with a trump.

Then the contract cannot be made.

Restore your sexual drive by changing dose or kind of SSRI Dear Dr. K: Last year I started taking an SSRI for depression. It has done wonders for my mood -- but it really has dampened my sex drive. Any suggestions?

Dear Reader: Since depression is so common, and since SSRIs are often used to treat depression, I’ve known many people who share your problem. Fortunately, there are several options that often help people restore their sexual desire and function.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. This group of drugs includes fluoxetine (Prozac), escitalopram (Lexapro), sertraline (Zoloft) and citalopram (Celexa).

SSRIs effectively relieve depressive symptoms in many

But SSRIs can have uncomfortable side effects. The best known of these are sexual.

SSRIs can reduce interest in sex. They also can make it difficult to become aroused, sustain arousal and reach orgasm.

Some people taking SSRIs aren’t able to have an orgasm at all.

Sexual side effects sometimes subside with time, so it’s worth waiting a while to see

if problems diminish. This is particularly true if the medication is easing your depression significantly, as it is in your case. If side effects persist, one or more of the following strategies may help: • Lower the dose. In my experience, lowering the dose sometimes still is effective for your mood, but eliminates sexual side effects.

• Schedule sex. Side effects may be more pronounced at particular times of the day.

They may be worse within a few hours of taking your medication, for example. If so, plan to have sex when side effects are least bothersome. If this is not feasible, take the drug at a different time.

• Switch to a different drug.

Other types of antidepressants are less likely to cause sexual

problems. These include bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

• Add a drug. For some men, taking sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) or vardenafil (Levitra) sometimes can alleviate SSRI-induced erectile dysfunction.

And men and women may both benefit from adding bupropion to their treatment. This medication has been found to counter SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and can boost sexual drive and arousal. It also can increase the intensity or duration of an orgasm. Another drug, buspirone (Buspar), sometimes can restore the ability to have an orgasm and increase libido.

• Meet with a therapist. Even when medication is at the root of sexual problems, psycholog-

ical issues often become interwoven. Try working with a sex therapist or general therapist.

A therapist can help couples explore their sexual concerns and learn to better communicate their needs.

Years ago, a patient of mine told me the SSRI he was taking greatly helped his mood, but had affected his sexual function. He said: “If this continues, this medicine is not going to help my depression. Because if I can’t get my sex drive back, I’m going to become really depressed.” I took his point.

Fortunately, adding another type of antidepressant solved the problem.
