Born: Nov. 11, 1950; in Harriman, TN Died: Feb. 9, 2015; in Dwight, IL Mary Gaddis, age 64, of Coal City, passed away Monday morning February 9, 2015, at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Born November 11, 1950, in Harriman, TN, Mary was a daughter of the late William and Merta (Brown) Wallace. She was raised and educated in Harriman and on February 14, 1978, Mary married Dennis M. Gaddis in New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City.

She was employed by National Fiberglass in Romeoville for 32 years. Mary will be remembered for her love of camping, reading and garage sales.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis; daughter and son-inlaw, Mindy and Stan Daigger of Coal City; two granddaughters, Kristyn and Lexi Daigger; three sisters, Sue (Joe) Foster and Linda Decker, both of Smithville, TN and Sarah Uerkwitz of Godley; one brother, Robert Wallace of Smithville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Muriel Wallace of Smithville, Fred (Mary) Gaddis of Coal City, Rita (Dominic) Quigley of Godley and Victor (Monica) Gaddis of Mainz, Germany; numerous nieces and nephews, including, Joey (Dana) Foster, Jamie (Matt) Baranski, Courtney Decker, Wayne, Holly and Mike Uerkwitz, Jason Gaddis, Erin and Brad Hoffmeyer, Nicole (Craig) Foley, Ryne and Taylor Quigley, Mike Gaddis and Andy Gumb.

Also not to forget all her adopted camping family, Eddy and Cathy Jett, Troy and Michelle Scholes, Steve and Barb Schneider, Tammy and Kevin Turner, Mary Schmidberger, Tom and Danielle Schmidberger, Ruth and Bruce Seplak and Jim and Barb McCauley; very special lifelong friends, Birdie and Carson Stephenson; and a special caretaker that took care of “Fred” (which was a nickname given to Mary) for her many months - Teresa Olvera.

Her care was admired and will be cherished forever.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill, Stanley, John and Carl Wallace; one niece, Sonya Foster; and her mother and father-in-law, James and Dorothy Gaddis.

TOM WISE

Born: Aug. 8, 1946; in Streator, IL Died: Feb. 8, 2015; in Hinsdale, IL Tom Wise, age 68, of Gardner, passed away Sunday evening, February 8, 2015, at Manor Care in Hinsdale.

Born August 8, 1946, in Streator, Tom was a son of the late Glenn and Rosalie (Crandall) Wise. He was raised in Gardner and graduated from Gardner South Wilmington High School with the Class of 1965. Tom has been affiliated with the Ford Dealership in Gardner his entire life, owning and operating Tom Wise Ford until 1988, and retiring from Rub Ford in 2012. Tom was

a member of the Gardner Fire Department, served as a former trustee with the Church of Hope and was active with the Gardner Beautification Committee and the Route 66 Corridor Committee. Tom served as a Gardner Commissioner for several years and was currently the Mayor of the Village of Gardner, since being elected in 1999. He enjoyed antique Ford cars and trucks and was a great Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include three children, Lori (Brad) Patten and Scott (Melanie) Wise, both of Gardner and Tony (Kristen) Wise of Herscher; grandchildren, Austin, Madelyn, Michael, Cole, Nathan and Noah, with another expected; one sister, Carol McElroy of Lakeland, Florida; his father-in-law, Bill Hollmeyer of Dwight; brother-in-law, John (Renee) Hollmeyer of Gardner; and sister-in-law, Ruth (Frank) Lardi of South Wilmington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane (nee Hollmeyer) on December 17, 1987; grandson, DJ; and motherin-law, Theresa Hollmeyer.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 12, 2015, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty Street in Gardner. Funeral services will follow Friday morning, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Jan Chandler from Church of Hope officiating. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Tom will be laid to rest with his late wife Mary Jane.

Pallbearers will be: Dean Christensen, Jim Bozue, Ray Rub, Mike Serena, Dean Rankovich and John Corneglio.

Area felony dispositions announced MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

The state’s attorney’s office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim and a review of the offender’s criminal history, and after weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

The state’s attorney’s office makes no representation as to the accuracy of such information, according to the news release.

• Marshall Brown, 43, of Joliet pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to four and a half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

• Joseph Lovera, 45, of Wilmington pleaded guilty to the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, and the unlawful delivery of more than 15 grams of heroin, a Class X felony, and was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

• Ryne Wallace, 28, of Minooka pleaded guilty to the

ORRIS – Phylicia Malone of Plainfield has always loved helping people.

The little sister of a person with a disability, she knows what it takes to care for those who need help.

“The special-needs population is near and dear to my heart,” Malone said. “I have a special-needs sister, and with her being part of my life, all my life I found it easy to interact with the patient and their family. I lived it. I loved it.”

That dedication to caring led Malone to receive the African-American History Month Public Health Champion Award on Feb. 4.

“I love to help people,” Malone said Tuesday. “Being in public health gives me the chance to empower a population that is often overlooked and underserved.”

Malone, a registered nurse, was nominated along with others from the Northern Illinois Public Health Region, which consists of Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties.

Omayra Giachello from the Illinois Department of Public Health attended a Grundy health department staff meeting to present Malone with the award.

Malone was nominated by her supervisor, Nursing Director Judy Bailey, who said she was an obvious choice.

“Phylicia’s strongest attribute is the caring and compassion she has for her clients,” Bailey wrote in the nomination letter. “She always strives to have them leave with more confidence and feeling empowered to make good choices. She consistently goes the extra mile and has been named employ-

Malone’s position at the health department has her wearing many hats, according to Bailey’s nomination letter.

She works as a communicable disease nurse, carries a WIC and Family Case Management caseload, performs immunizations, and is the point of contact for all of the county’s Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Reporting System cases.

She also helps clients complete applications for Medicaid and follows up with the Department of Human Services to make sure the process gets completed.

“Grundy County Health Department is a small health department,” according to Bailey’s letter. “As anyone who works in a small health department knows, versatility, team work and the wearing of many hats is standard operating procedure.”

Bailey said she is surprised Malone won, with so many counties involved, many of them larger.

But she was certain Malone deserved the award.

Grundy County to contract County SWCD tree, human resources assistant fish sales coming up MORRIS DAILY HERALD

Will provide aid for HR director on part-time basis

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board approved Tuesday a resolution to hire an independent contractor to provide assistance to the new human resources director.

The decision came in a 12-0 vote, with board members Ann Gill, Ken Iverson, Vicki Geiger and Doug Boresi absent and vice chairman David Nelson as acting chairman with County Board Chairman David Welter absent.

Deborah Jankiewicz began her position as human resources director on Jan. 4, and a position for an assistant has been put on hold while job descriptions and pay are worked out in committee.

Finance chairman John Galloway said the recommen-

dation to approve came out of Monday night’s finance committee because an assistant is needed in the interim.

“We went this route because the new HR director is getting the feel for her position and instead of speeding up the hiring process, we felt it would be better to hire an independent contractor who has previously worked for the county to help during the transition,” Galloway said at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

Jankiewicz said the contract is for a part-time assistant to work 12 to 16 hours a week at a rate of $20 per hour, to assist with special project work that needs to be done.

“Linda Ragan has worked with the county previously and retired, [so] she will be able to show me some things that are specific to the Grundy County human resource position as well as help train the new assistant once one is hired,” Jankiewicz said.

The director said she had some concerns when looking

at the previous job description, such as it didn’t have minimum requirements she felt the position requires.

“Once we get the job description finalized in committee we will start the search to fill the position permanently,” she said.

The independent contractor agreement states the position is to provide outside bookkeeping and related record creation, which includes but is not limited to quarterly reports, quarterly sick time payouts, $50 health care payouts and records retention, and provide a historical background as to the past practice and procedure for the HR director position.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Soil & Water Conservation District is holding its semiannual tree and fish sales.

The trees, shrubs and plants that are available come in a variety of sizes and species, according to a news release from the district.

There are one-gallon evergreens, maples, and oaks to burning bushes, dogwoods and viburnums.

The district also offers a selection of groundcovers and perennials to choose from, such as black-eyed Susans, purple coneflowers and daylilies.

For the fish sale, there is an assortment to choose from

and in different lengths, including 4- to 6-inch channel catfish and 5- to 8-inch largemouth bass and an albino catfish that is 6 to 8 inches long.

The tree order forms are due April 16 and will be delivered April 23.

Fish orders for the triploid grass carp orders are due March 16 and all other orders are due by noon March 26; they will be delivered April 2.

Open houses set for Enbridge pipeline Pre-construction meetings open to affected residents

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com CRETE – Open houses will be held next week on the pre-construction phase of a pipeline that will run through Grundy and Will counties.

Enbridge plans to construct the Line 78 pipeline from the Flanagan Terminal near Pontiac to its terminal near Griffith, Indiana. The 79-mile, 36-inch diameter crude oil pipeline will cross Livingston, Grundy, Kankakee, Will and Cook counties in Illinois, as well as Lake County in Indiana.

The open houses regarding the pre-construction phase of the project will be Feb. 19 in

capacity to transport crude oil, according to Enbridge.

The project will “expand Enbridge’s capacity to transport growing supplies of crude oil produced in the Williston Sauk Village and Feb. 26 in Basin region around North Dakota and light and heavy crude Crete.

Crete Mayor Michael Einhorn said the Line 78 Pipeline Project is “really an innocuous” project. Other pipelines have passed through Crete without issues, he said.

“Historically, they have not caused problems. I don’t anticipate any problems with Enbridge, quite frankly,” Ein-

horn said. “They’ve been more than forthright in their dealings with the village with concerns about the routing early on. But we were able to resolve those with communication and cooperation.”

Einhorn said he attended the 2012 open houses.

An open house for the pipeline also will be held Feb. 17 in Schererville, Indiana, and another in Kankakee County at a later, unspecified date.

Park district gets $400,000 grant MORRIS DAILY HERALD GODLEY – The Godley Park District has been awarded its first OSLAD grant in the amount of $400,000.

This grant is for park improvements including a multipurpose athletic field overlay, ball field renovations, a bandshell, multiuse trail to connect to a boardwalk with a fishing station, a shoreline with edging of natural plantings, a recycled water themed splash pad with water play zones, shade structure with sitting area, a new prefabri-

cated restroom building, and a new playground with play structures for 2-to-5-year-olds and 5-to-12-year-olds, according to a news release from the Park District.

“The overall improvements will serve our community and surrounding areas in numerous capacities and give them new and additional opportunities in passive and active outdoor recreation for many years to come,” the Godley Park District said in the news release.

Godley is in both Grundy and Will counties.

The board Monday night voted 6-0, with Delores Robinson absent, to approve a job description for the position.

The position will be filled internally and will not create a need for additional staff, Superintendent Pat Halloran told the board.

“The reading specialist has been talked about quite a while at Rising Star,” Halloran said.

Principal Kelly Hussey said the specialist will provide instruction in best practices in reading for teachers and

students. The specialist will coach within the classroom, conferencing with teachers, co-teaching and modeling within classes.

“The goal is to improve student literacy,” Halloran said.

The position will help develop training and curriculum, evaluate student progress, and monitor implementation and effectiveness of any instruc-

tional interventions put in place. The specialist also will teach individual students and small student groups, focusing on those in need of additional reading support.

Halloran said the position will be staffed much like the dean of special populations position filled a year ago by Lori Dite. The teacher remains in the classroom for a portion of

the day and does other duties for assigned periods each day.

The position will report to the principal and the requirements include a valid state teaching certification. A master’s degree in reading is preferred.

Halloran said the district will look to fill the position now that the job description is approved.

Parents encouraged to take web survey on high school

“We’ve had 80 parents start the survey but not finish it,” Hussey said. “If just half of those who have started it would finish it, we would reach our 20 percent goal.”

He said more than 90 percent of students already have taken the survey, and nearly 90 percent of the staff, but parent input is equally important.

Participants are asked to answer questions such as: • “How often does staff invite you to school events?”

• “To what extent do you feel that this school is preparing your child for college?”

• “Overall, how satisfied are you with the education your child is receiving at this school?”

It also asks participants to answer to what degree they agree or disagree with statements such as: • “Offer opportunities to participate in making decisions that affect the school community.”

• “Your voice is valued at the school.”

Superintendent Pat Halloran said he believes the district has successfully implemented ideas based on the last two surveys.

“It’s a valuable tool for us,” Halloran said.

Parents who do not have access to a computer or the Internet can contact Morris Community High School at 815-9421294 to schedule computer lab time to complete the survey.

MORRIS – Morris Community High School has joined the third statewide 5 Essentials survey to learn what students, staff and the community think about the school climate and learning conditions.

Principal Kelly Hussey said the survey is not mandatory, but the school has found the information gathered through it useful. He hopes parents

will go to the school’s website, www.morrishs.org, and click on the survey link.

“We use the data to see the area of our strengths and our weaknesses,” Hussey said. “It allows us to implement ways to improve our weaknesses and complement our strengths.”

The survey started Jan. 12 and will end March 13. The district needs at least 20 percent of parents to respond in order to get results, and as of Monday, it had 12 percent.

Channahon discusses housing rule changes Village now prohibits building new homes smaller than 1,800 square feet

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – By all indications, the housing market is beginning to make strides again after a long recession, and Channahon trustees and commissioners plan to be ready for its rebirth.

The Village Board and the Planning and Zoning Commission held a joint meeting Monday to discuss housing issues that may arise with developers and residents in the future.

Channahon has 908 lots platted and without houses, but only 64 are available for individuals to purchase.

The rest are owned by parties seeking a developer to buy in bulk.

That could be a problem, Community Development Director Michael Petrick said, because if last year’s growth

continues, housing demand will exceed lots available during the first quarter of this year.

Most of the lots exist under homeowners’ covenants, which specify the minimum square footage of houses, during a time when smaller homes are more desirable to many.

The village is hosting a residential development summit in March, and staff asked trustees and commissioners for their thoughts on how to attract developers to a changed market.

“Smaller homes seem to be the trend in new housing right now,” Petrick said.

Village zoning prohibits houses from being smaller than 1,800 square feet. Trustee Debbie Militello said she thought it was imperative for Channahon to offer some smaller housing choices.

“Unless a community can provide for every stage of life, that community is doomed to fail,” she said. “We’re missing some of it. ... Every home doesn’t have to be a four-bedroom, two-story, and smaller doesn’t mean less quality.”

Militello said she has long believed the village should offer nice homes of varying sizes that could serve everyone, from recent college graduates to families and seniors wanting to downsize.

“I agree,” Planning and Zoning Chairwoman Karen Ciarlette said. “We need to cater to everybody.”

One problem, the boards discussed, is the homeowners’ covenants. Existing homeowners also do not usually want new houses built smaller. That situation occurred recently in the Wedgewood Heights subdivision, Ciarlette said.

Ordinances don’t allow for an increase in the height of a garage to allow for the storage of a recreational vehicle, according to Petrick.

“I think as a smaller community, we should hear it out,” Commissioner Jeff Simon said about homeowners who want to make requests regarding other variances.

“It’s a friendly neighborhood thing. Let them speak.”

“People need to be heard,” Trustee Missey Schumaker said, “then they’ve had their say.”

The Channahon village staff plan on surveying area municipalities for variance comparisons and bringing the results back to the boards.

“I think it would behoove us to broaden that spectrum up,” Cook said. “Nothing prohibits anyone from coming to a meeting and asking for something. ... We look at things on a case-by-case basis.”

1. Butter well a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Combine water, sugar, vanilla bean pod and seeds, condensed milk, corn syrup and butter in a heavy-bottomed 4-quart saucepan. Heat to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly with a heat-resistant rubber spatula. Continue stirring while cooking, lowering heat to medium-high or medium, to keep mixture at a gentle boil, until mixture reaches 245 degrees F on a candy thermometer.

A simple soft caramel from “Chocolates and Confections, at Home with the Culinary Institute of America” is the easiest way to go.

Caramel-making tips from author Martha Holmberg and the Tribune test kitchen: • Caramels tend to foam during cooking. Use a saucepan larger than you might think for the amount of ingredients (at least three times the volume) to prevent boil-overs.

• Do not use a pan with a nonstick surface; caramel temperatures are too hot for it.

• Avoid dark saucepans, it will be difficult to judge color.

• Use only heat-resistant utensils (spoons, spatulas, etc.)

• Caramels scorch easily. Stir constantly during cooking, if indicated in recipe; moderate the heat.

• Pay attention. Do not step away from the stove during cooking. The flavor can go from mellow to burned in an instant.

• Judge caramel color by using a metal teaspoon to dip a tiny amount onto a white plate.

Chocolate may be the go-to sweet for Valentine’s Day, but it’s time to show caramel a little love. It’s been relegated to a supporting role in beribboned boxes of candy for too long. So this year, we’re letting caramel star.

Golden brown caramel is versatile enough to hold its own as a candy, plain or embellished with sea salt or a dip in chocolate. Tuck a softer version of its buttery sweetness between cake layers or use it to sandwich cookies. As a sauce, it gilds so many desserts.

“Transforming cloying white sugar into nuanced teetering-on-the-edge-of-bitter caramel is an example of what I love most about cooking,” writes Martha Holmberg in “Modern Sauces” (Chronicle Books, $35). “You can start with one thing and you turn it into another, much better thing.”

Eau de jet: Airlines use mood-altering air fresheners For cats and dogs that don’t like to travel, pet owners can buy “calming” sprays to ramp down anxiety. Now airlines are doing the same thing to their passengers.

Delta infuses its planes with an aroma it calls “Calm.” It intends to create “a more relaxing environment” for passengers, The Wall Street Journal recently reported.

United is spritzing its lounges and boarding corridors with a scent it calls “Landing.” In this, aviation joins other industries practicing a new form of consumer manipulation called “scent marketing.”

It’s a dangerous business for any industry, given the number of Americans with allergies – or simply aversion – to chemical scents. For the airlines in particular, it’s wrong because their customers cannot easily escape.

Scent marketing is not new. Three years ago, a grocery store in New York was caught infusing its air with the scent of chocolate and fresh-baked bread, in hopes of stimulating sales.

A North Carolina company that sells smells promises, “These scents will make consumers spend more.” Ironically, the rise of “nebulization technology” – which distributes scent in a large space through fans or air-conditioning units – comes at a time when many companies are adopting fragrance-free policies.

Of particular concern are aromas meant to alter alertness and mood. A company called Nature’s Baby makes a spray for a baby’s crib that is marketed as a “special sleepy scent.”

Febreze hawks a lavender-based spray as an adult sleep aid. Consumer participation, however, is voluntary, unlike on a plane or in an airport terminal.

Presumably, Delta’s “Calm” is just a pleasant scent, not a poppy field at 40,000 feet.

But it sounds otherwise, and even without sinister implications and the health issues that inhaling chemicals suggests, many people just can’t abide perfume. If the airlines want to provide pleasing fragrances, they should bake cookies on board.

The college degree’s value?

SPRINGFIELD – Americans care too little about education and too much about diplomas.

Here in Springfield we extol the virtues of Abraham Lincoln, our native son, who despite having little formal schooling taught himself.

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Larry Ellison rose to be the titans of high tech. And none of them obtained college degrees.

But when it comes to politicians, Americans have a different standard. We haven’t had a president without a college diploma since Harry Truman.

The Washington Post reports that not one member of the U.S. Senate doesn’t have at least a bachelor’s degree.

In fact, our last three presidents all hold advanced degrees from Ivy League institutions. Is our nation better off for it? It’s debatable.

Unfortunately, a college di-

More than a few liberals are clicking their tongues and shaking their heads, because this presidential hopeful doesn’t have a college degree. He quit his senior year at Marquette University to take a job.

It doesn’t bother me one iota he doesn’t have a college degree.

I’m much more concerned about a person’s willingness to learn and their life experiences.

Look no further than the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois.

He never held a college degree and was able to found

the graduate program where I received my master’s degree.

He went on to found what is now the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. As a young man, he went into business for himself and eventually owned a chain of 14 newspapers.

Increasingly, colleges are pricing themselves out of reach of many families. Inevitably, the marketplace will create less costly learning alternatives.

And to evaluate the effectiveness of such programs, the question to be asked isn’t whether people have degrees but whether they are educated.

It’s already tourney time for some Don’t look now, but the IHSA basketball postseason is already upon us.

Girls action actually started Monday night, and a couple of area teams already have regional wins under their belts.

In the Class 1A Somonauk Regional, Gardner-South Wilmington upended Dwight, 49-17, while in the Class 2A Reed-Custer Regional, Seneca handed Wilmington a 46-22 thumping. Now comes the hard part for those two teams.

Seneca, the third seed in the six-team regional, was set to take on second-seeded Beecher at Reed-Custer at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Meanwhile, Gardner-South Wilmington, seeded fourth in the five-team event, takes on No. 1 Newark tonight at 6.

As far as the larger schools in the area go, let’s just say they weren’t done any favors.

Morris and Coal City, with 17 and 20 wins, respectively, are the bottom two seeds in the five-team Class 3A Providence Catholic Regional. They play each other at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 with the winner getting to face top seed Lincoln-Way West.

I have a feeling that Morris will have a little extra incentive against Coal City in the opener. Not only are the Coalers a local rival, but the Redskins were ousted by Lincoln-Way West in a tight game in last year’s regional, 56-53.

The two teams played again earlier this season at the Ottawa Tournament in a game that will definitely not make the Redskins’ season highlight reel. West beat them 66-36 and essentially had their way with Morris after the first quarter.

Coal City, meanwhile, recently won the championship of the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament for the second straight year. If Morris wants that rematch with Lincoln-Way West, the team would do well not to

The other two teams in the regional are Joliet Catholic Academy, which finished second in the state in Class 3A to Montini last year, and Providence Catholic. It’s nothing new, as the same five teams were together in the regional last year, as well. JCA and Providence played for the regional title, with the Angels coming away with a 50-30 win.

In Class 4A, Minooka sports a 19-6 record, yet garnered just the fourth seed in the five-team Ottawa Regional. The Indians will play fifth-seeded Moline at 7 p.m. Monday, with the winner getting to face top-seeded Rock Island at 6 the next night. No. 2 East Moline and No. 3 Ottawa will play immediately after that game.

Wrestling tourneys

The wrestling postseason already is underway, as well. After taking second to Wilmington at the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament, Coal City rebounded to win the Class 1A regional title over the Wildcats at Chicago Agricultural Science. After the individual tournament is over, the Coalers will take part in the Plano Dual Team Sectional.

Individuals who qualified for sectionals will wrestle this weekend. In Class 1A, Coal City wrestlers will be at Wilmington and Seneca wrestlers will be at Oregon. In Class 2A, Morris wrestlers will be at Sterling. Minooka’s Class 3A advancers will wrestle at Normal Community.

So many questions to answer at linebacker

With a new general manager and coach, and plenty of questions about which players are returning, the Bears’ organization is difficult to gauge when it comes to adding free agents, and how much the team will be willing to spend.

We know GM Ryan Pace believes in building through the draft, but you can count on some free-agent additions when it all begins on March 10.

We’ll go position-by-position breaking down where the Bears stand, who their options are and who they could target next month. Today, we analyze the linebacker position.

Note: We will do our best to look at linebackers who fit in a 3-4 defense, even though the Bears have not announced a base scheme. Regardless, we should expect several different fronts.

A man who had scored 474 goals in his productive 1,142game career had managed only two goals in 15 games since Jan. 1. When a player is 36 years old, that raises eyebrows.

“Maybe it’s because of age,” he said, joking about turning 36 on Jan. 12, then dashing that theory. “I feel good. Lots of chances. The puck just doesn’t want to go in.”

Fast-forward through Sunday and Monday. In 1,144 games, Hossa now has 478 goals, another stride toward the 500-goal club. After scoring four goals against the Blues and Coyotes, the 12-time AllStar was explaining his hot hand – to a Czech TV crew and then, to Chicago media.

“Sometimes you’re getting great chances and great opportunities, but the puck doesn’t go in,” Hossa said. “Then you just go around the net, shoot two times and there’s two goals.

You just have to keep working hard and good things happen.”

At inside linebacker, if the Bears want a one-year, stopgap run-stopper (aside from Briggs) who could help the younger players, longtime Jet David Harris is hitting free agency. Harris hasn’t missed a game since 2008 and has 120plus tackles in five of his eight NFL seasons.

Colin McCarthy, who turns 27 in May, missed all of last year with a shoulder injury. If he could stay healthy, Darryl Sharpton returning to the Bears to compete for an inside linebacker role would make sense, a spot he racked up the tackles in with the Texans.

The worst symptom of pancreatitis is pain in the abdomen. Early in the disease, the pain comes in attacks,

separated by pain-free periods. Later in the disease, the pain can be present almost constantly.

Most often, the pain is high in the middle of the abdomen, just above the belly button.

The pain often spreads to the middle of the back. Nausea and vomiting often accompany the pain. Attacks are often triggered by meals and by drinking alcoholic beverages.

Some people can reduce the pain by sitting up and leaning forward.

Most cases of chronic pancreatitis are caused by ongoing overuse of alcohol.

People who continue to drink after one or more episodes of alcohol-related acute pancreatitis are more likely to develop chronic pancreatitis.

Anyone who has had an acute

episode should stop drinking entirely. This will help to lower the chances of developing chronic pancreatitis.

In my experience, people who quit drinking alcohol entirely often have only mild or occasional symptoms. Those who continue to drink alcohol can have disabling, daily pain, requiring frequent hospitalizations.

Chronic pancreatitis cannot be cured. However, the various problems it causes can be treated. For milder pain, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may help. But many people need stronger, narcotic medications. Pain management can be very challenging, and it may help to see a pain specialist. In rare cases, surgery may be done to relieve pain.

Digestive enzymes can help with problems digesting food and the resulting vitamin deficiencies. They come in pill or capsule form. Your doctor also may suggest that you follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that restricts some types of fats.

Diabetes caused by chronic pancreatitis usually requires treatment with insulin.

You can do more to protect yourself from future suffering than your doctor can do for you. The most important thing is to find help to stop drinking.
