All traffic will exit at the Brisbin Road interchange (exit 116), and will be directed to travel south to Route 6, then east on Route 6 to Interstate 55, then north on I-55 to I-80.

IDOT encourages motorists to use “extreme caution when traveling along the detour and are advised to be alert for flaggers and all other workers,” the agency said in the news release.

Fellow pinstripe artist Famous Dave Waters of Joliet agreed that the custom lines and detailed designs offer vehicles an artistic enhancement.

“It personalizes the vehicle and makes it their own,” said Waters, who has pinstriped for 36 years. “It takes practice, practice, practice to get it right.”

For Jack Dunn of Kinsman, Jalopy Fest provided an opportunity to show off the final results of his dream, a 1930 Model A Tudor.

“It was built by a group of people in Seneca,” Dunn said.

“It was my idea. I talked them into building it.”

Dunn enjoys going to car shows where he can show the vehicle off. He’s only had it for two years and this year was his first at Jalopy Fest.

“I always wanted to make a hot rod out of a two-door sedan.

I found this car and built one,” Dunn said.

Jalopy Fest also offered a flea market, where fair-goers could find anything that existed before 1970, including Tupperware tumblers and steering columns.

County Highway 36 (Dupont Road) in Seneca will be closed for one-third of a mile east of Route 170 starting Thursday for road work. The project is expected to take about 10 days to complete.

A detour will not be posted.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes around the construction site.

Updates on community foundation

By DEVAN GAGLIARDO Community Foundation of Grundy County As a child, I always felt like time stood still just to keep me from another birthday, another Christmas, or another summer vacation. My grandma would always say, “Wait until you get older, the days will fly by.”

As an adult I now understand the truth to that statement. I’d like to give a middle-of-the year update on the program side of the Community Foundation of Grundy County, but this year I’m a little late because I blinked and summer was over.

Our grants program has assisted several 501c3 organizations this year. Through our grant program, we give two ways: 1) To organizations that complete a grant application, which are reviewed monthly

by our Grants and Programs Committee.

2) And through our Who Wants to be a Grant Maker program during monthly Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours events.

These grants are given in $100 increments to a charity of the winning individual’s choice.

We have provided grants to the following organizations in 2014: Grundy County Health Department, Morris High School Drama Department, Grundy Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, We Care of Grundy County, Angels of Hope, YARN Foundation, American Cancer Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will-Grundy.

There are still funds available in the 2014 budget. If your organization is interested in applying for a grant, an application (available at www. cfgrundycounty.com) must be completed.

BRIEF Morris Kiwanis Club will host its first Trivia Night MORRIS – The Morris Kiwanis Club has scheduled its first Trivia Night Contest fundraiser for 6 p.m. Oct. 18. The event will be at the Moose Lodge in Morris.

The Grundy Partnership for Children has spent 2014 bringing information about healthy child development to parents and child care providers. Early in the year, a workshop focusing on childhood trauma was held for local providers. In the spring, GPC members attended the Family Wellness Night at Coal City High School to provide parents with information.

During the summer months, a website, www.grundypartnershipforchildren.org, was developed so information about healthy child development could be accessed by anyone at any time.

GPC members are working on putting together a one-day workshop for local professionals, so stay tuned.

The Business Education Council is a group comprised of educators and professionals whose purpose is to bridge the education world with

the business world. Because of this collaboration, local schools have become aware of internships and other career exploration opportunities – which means students have received hands-on experience in careers they are interested in.

The Business Education Council is working to bring an eighth-grade Career Expo to Grundy County, which would allow students an opportunity to learn more about the careers available to them in and around Grundy County.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County is involved with several networks focusing on issues ranging from the young child to behavioral health. However, we realized there were no efforts we were aware of focusing on those age 65 and older.

So this summer, the foundation called together several local organizations that

work with seniors to discuss what resources are available in Grundy and what gaps exist. The Senior Network is scheduled to meet again Sept.

18, and organization providing services to seniors are welcome to attend.

Along those lines, the foundation’s next Challenges of the Future event – Is Grundy County A Retirement-Friendly Community?

– will discuss amenities and services Grundy needs for our senior citizens to lead full, productive lives. The event is scheduled for Oct. 1 at Living Water Church. For information on the Senior Network or the Challenges of the Future Event, call at 815-941-0852.

SENECA – A lot of the concern about the Seneca football team heading into the season was how the Irish were going to replace the offensive production they lost due to graduation from last season’s 10-2 team.

While the exact answer to that question still remains up in the air, one thing is for certain.

If Seneca’s defense keeps playing the way it has in the first two weeks, then offense is going to be far less of an issue.

For the second week in a row Saturday, the Irish held an opponent to just one touchdown as they defeated Nokomis, 27-7, to move to 2-0 on the young season.

“A lot of the credit goes to [assistant] coach [Don] Brown and what he has done with the defense,” Seneca coach Ted O’Boyle said. “We knew, especially early in the season, that we be a work on progress on offense to make up for losing guys like Bo [Taylor] and Tommy [Lovett] from last year.

“But, these guys have bought into what coach Brown is doing and giving up only seven points a game really takes a lot of pressure off the offense. We are going to have to win games differently than we did last year, and it’s nice to have two games where we have been able to do that.”

Seneca, which visits ReedCuster on Friday night, held Nokomis to 182 total yards, most of which were gained after the Irish had already built a 20-0 lead.

Offensively, Alex Thornley stepped to the forefront, as did Arik Applebee and Baley Lejawa. Thornley scored twice, on runs of six and 13 yards, while Applebee took over at quarterback briefly when Zach Russell got dinged up and ran for a 35yard touchdown. Lejawa caught a 38-yard screen pass on which he reversed field and followed the block of Russell around the corner to set up fullback Alex Mann’s three-yard TD run.

“It felt real good to get into the end zone twice,” Thornley said. “Nokomis’ defense was pretty tough early, but we were able to wear them down as the

game went on. You could tell that all the work we did in the off season and during practice in our sprints and conditioning paid off because we were in better shape than they were.

“That stuff [conditioning] isn’t fun when you are doing it, but it’s nice when you come out here on the field and see that it’s working when the other team has their hands on their knees and you don’t.”

Russell completed 8 of 14 passes for 95 yards, while Applebee ran for 47 yards while he took snaps from behind center. Seneca gained 153 of its 206

yards after halftime.

“We didn’t change much after halftime,” O’Boyle said. “We were able to get Zach going a little bit with some quick passes to give him some confidence, and it was nice to see Arik take advantage of his opportunity when he got in there. It is very nice to have two guys we can put at quarterback and feel very comfortable with.

“To be 2-0 right now is great, but it doesn’t get any easier.

Reed-Custer is going to give us a challange next week. They have a lot of nice players so we are going to have to be ready.”

Record: 0-1 It means: Of all the matchups on the Bears’ schedule, none looked easier than this – on paper – but that’s why they play the games. There is a lot of things for the staff to sort out this week.

Bears unprepared for Buffalo? Matt Forte leaves lasting impression

CHICAGO – Don’t jump! Please!

The Buffalo Bills aren’t that bad of a football team. That was 2013’s secondranked running game the Bears saw Sunday, and the Bills boast one of the league’s best defensive lines.

But the Bears’ 23-20 overtime loss to the Bills never should have happened.

Either the Bears once again are going to be the worst run defense in the NFL, in which case general manager Phil Emery has some explaining to do, or coach Marc Trestman and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker didn’t have their Bears ready for Week 1.

We’ll talk about Jay Cutler in a minute.

Hold the opposition to 167 yards passing, one touchdown and pick off one pass in a game in the NFL today and you’re going to win, unless you allow 193 yards rushing.

Through one week of the 2014 season, nothing has been fixed on defense.

I recall being stunned after the preseason game with the Seattle Seahawks to hear Tucker looking for bright spots and pointing out his guys had eliminated the big plays, not allowing Seattle to rip anything off in chunks.

We have to assume Trestman was pleased, too, as he never sent his starters back out in the second half in Seattle and didn’t even dress any of them for their final preseason game against Cleveland.

Welcome to Week 1, fellas. When you give up 360 yards of offense but only 15 first downs, it’s pretty clear you’re giving

I wonder what they’re thinking now after the Bills ripped off runs of 47, 38, 13 and 11 yards and pass plays of 32, 25, 25 and 20 yards?

Is this Bears defense as bad as last year’s personnel-wise? If it is, Emery better break out his flak jacket.

I doubt, however, they are that bad, and I think we have to wait a few weeks to really get our arms around what we’ve got here.

That leaves us with the explanation that the Bears just weren’t ready for Buffalo, and although that arrow has to point at Trestman, it’s wrong to expect him to stand in front of the firing squad on his own.

Thirty-somethings Jared Allen, Jeremiah Ratliff, Lance Briggs, D.J. Williams, Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman have talked for months now about the talent in their ranks, and suggested great things could be in the offing.

At this stage of their careers, to solely blame the coaches for their mediocre showing is a cop-out. Those veteran Bears defenders did not earn their paychecks against the Bills.

They also didn’t get nearly enough help from the offense. Matt Forte might be the only guy on the team who deserved

to sleep soundly after the game.

Sure, Jay Cutler’s 34 of 49, 349 yards passing, two TDs and two interceptions is a decent stat line, but it still is just an 86.9 passer rating that leaves him among some of the decent second-tier quarterbacks in the league.

His second interception to Kyle Williams was Cutler-esque, a ball that never should have been thrown. It wasn’t the reason they lost the game, but it was the reason it continues to be silly to talk about this team as anything more than average for now.

The fact that he was the “Old Jay” in his postgame news conference should bother no one but the media who are paid to deal with him, unless he also continued to be the “Old Jay” with his teammates in the locker room behind closed doors.

All we can do is wait and watch.

The problem now is as I wrote in my game preview, this was almost a mustwin game for the Bears.

There’s a ton of time for them to get better, but if this was the best they had to offer against Buffalo, what’s going to happen in San Francisco next weekend, New York against the Jets the week after or when Green Bay comes to town the week after that?

Those veterans on defense and their coaches have got some soul searching to do now.

Forte slipped on his wedding ring and then his watch before sliding his billfold into his front pocket. A black personalized White Sox jersey that hung in his stall was the finishing touch before Forte slowly turned, ready face a line of questioning.

Throughout Sunday’s 23-20 seasonopening overtime loss to the Bills, Forte had been one of the lone silver linings. He ran for 82 yards on 17 carries, grinding out 4.8 yards an attempt while also leading the Bears with eight catches for 87 yards.

Forte did so without the luxury of two of his offensive linemen – center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson – both of whom left the game with ankle injuries. Both will undergo MRIs on Monday.

Despite that, Forte was among the Bears’ most productive offensive players, accounting for all but one of the Bears’ 18 rushing attempts while being targeted nine times by Cutler. Asked after Sunday’s loss if he wished he had more help in the backfield, Forte just smiled.

“I don’t hope for help,” Forte said. “I go out there and work hard and what I can get out there is what I get. The offensive line does a great job for me and

More times than not Sunday, Forte did. Among his biggest admirers came from the offensive line that had to regroup after Garza and Slauson departed with injuries. With Michael Ola filling in for Slauson and Brian de la Puenta stepping in at center, the Bears managed to move the ball, finishing with 427 yards of total offense.

And yet, the Bears couldn’t manage to finish drives with touchdowns. After stringing together an eight-play drive

and reaching the Bills 34-yard line with the game tied at 17, Cutler was intercepted, leading to a go-ahead field goal.

The Bears then marched to the Bills’ 19-yard with a chance to win, but had to settle instead for a game-tying Robbie Gould field goal.

“We had lots of chances,” Forte said.

“We came out fast ... but then kind of killed ourselves after that with penalties of other mistakes in the passing game or whatever and in the run game.”

Regardless of the disappointment that permeated the Bears locker room, it didn’t take away from the impression Forte left on his teammates. It’s one of the things the Bears will look to build on as they prepare for next week’s difficult road test against the 49ers.

Morris sophomores claim win over Metamora

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – The Morris sophomore football team defeated Metamora, 26-6, on Friday night.

Metamora scored first to make the score, 6-0, but Merrick Hairapetian found the end zone for the Redskins late in the second quarter after a fumble recovery by Alonzo Enriques. Michael Gerischer punched in the two-point conversion to make the score, 8-6, at halftime. The Redskins dominated the second half, as Gerischer had touchdown runs of 6 and 38 yards, and Ricky Delfavero threw a 20yard touchdown pass to Michael Feeney.

The Morris defense shut the Redbirds out in the second half. Kenny Graman led Morris with a big hit and a fumble recovery. Morris, now 1-1 on the season, will play next Friday at home against Dundee-Crown.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Geneva Tournament: Morris went 3-2 over the weekend to move its record to 5-2 on the year. The Redskins lost to Burlington Central, 25-20, 1825, 15-12, as Kaylin Korte led with 17 kills and had 9 digs.

Taya Torkelson had 10 digs and 17 assists, while Janelle Brehm had nine points. The Redskins also lost to Geneva, 25-17, 25-14, as Brehm had four kills and five points. Addison Polite had five assists, while Korte had three kills, two blocks and four digs. Morris picked up a 25-12, 25-14 win over IMSA as Brehm had six aces, four digs and four kills.

Calleen Soper added two kills and Korte had four. In a 25-17, 25-23 win over Aurora Central Catholic, Korte amassed 12 kills and four digs, while Torkelson had nine assists and Polite had eight. Morris then beat the Geneva JV

Those passes, along with a pair of runs by Jake Walker, got Morris to the Metamora 29-yard line, where they faced third-and-7 and called timeout.

When the head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback all agree it’s time to call a certain play, you have an idea it might work. That was the case with the quarterback draw that Redskins called, as coach Alan Thorson, offensive coordinator Bill Lauer and Sobol all thought the play would work. And not only did it work, it worked to perfection, as Sobol tucked the ball away after dropping back and again went untouched through the Metamora defense for a touchdown with 4:04 remaining.

Then, it was up to the defense. T.J. Layne got them off to a good start with a sack, but Metamora countered with a 26-yard gain on third-and-20.

Later in the drive, Ryan Niewinski sacked Metamora’s Nick Holman, setting up fourthand-8. Holman was again under pressure and heaved the ball forward. Near the Morris 5-yard line, a tangle of Morris and Metamora players went for the ball, and Morris was whistled for pass interference, giving the Redbirds new life.

A pass into the end zone fell incomplete, Holman’s attempt to spike the ball to stop the clock was ruled a fumble that the Redskins recovered to end the game.

Just another nailbiter in a series that has produced more than its share of them over the years.

MORRIS – It’s almost as certain as death and taxes.

If you want to watch a hard-fought high school football game between two nearly identical programs, then a Morris-Metamora game is not going to disappoint you.

Friday night was more of the same as the two teams staged an instant classic, a game with an outcome that was not decided until the final buzzer sounded and Morris came away with a 12-8 victory.

For Morris, it was a definite improvement on the defensive side of the ball. A week after allowing Minooka to rack up more than 400 yards of offense, the Redskins limited Metamora to 211.

There was no single player or group of players that stood apart from the rest for the Redskins on defense. Just a unit that knew it needed to buckle down and get the job done or face an 0-2 start to the season, especially after giving up a 46-yard gain on third-and-16 and a 19-yard touchdown pass on fourthand-9 during Metamora’s lone touchdown drive.

The special teams turned in a big play immediately after Metamora’s touchdown, as Joey Webb returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to the Redbirds’ 27-yard line. A play later, Griffin Sobol kept the ball on the read option and sprinted through the middle of the Metamora defense for a 28-yard touchdown. A two-point pass attempt failed and left Morris trailing, 8-6, but the idea that Sobol could run against this defense had planted, and it came in handy later.

The Morris defense stiffened considerably after allowing the Metamora touchdown, forcing Redbird punts and flipping field position.

Twice, the Redskins entered the Redbirds’ red zone, only to see field goal attempts sail wide, one to the right and one to the left.

Grundy County felony dispositions announced MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

The State’s Attorney’s Office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a careful consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history, and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

The State’s Attorney’s Office makes no representation as to the accuracy of such information. In all cases, the official records of the court clerk should be consulted for confirmation.

• Dave Donegan, 20, pleaded guilty to theft of more than $500 but less than $10,000, a Class 3 felony, and was placed on second chance probation for 24 months. Donegan must pay court costs of $357, a $250 DNA fee, and was ordered to serve four days in the county jail. Donegan must perform 30 hours of public service work, complete substance abuse counseling and submit to periodic drug testing.

• Christopher Gillette, 28, of Dwight, pleaded guilty to two

counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, both Class 2 felonies, and was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The sentence is stayed and will be imposed if Gillette fails to complete the Grundy County Drug Court program.

• Jerilyn Green, 64, of Sebastol, California, pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of more than 2,000 but less than 5,000 grams of cannabis with the intent to deliver, a Class 1 felony, and was placed on conditional discharge for four years. Green paid a $20,783 fine, court costs of $357, a $100 Illinois State Police lab fee and a mandatory $2,000 drug assessment.

Green had no criminal history.

• Jason Maple, 22, of Godley, pleaded guilty to bringing contraband into a penal institution, a Class 1 felony, and was sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Maple also pled guilty to delivery of a lookalike substance, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections to run consecutive with the Class 1 felony. The sentence is stayed and will be imposed if Maple fails to complete the Grundy County Drug Court program.

OPINION Endorsement puzzling, but makes some sense The Illinois Education Association always has leaned more Republican than its Illinois Federation of Teachers counterpart, but at least one of the IEA’s endorsements raised a few eyebrows this year.

Conservative state Rep. Dwight Kay, R-Glen Carbon, was endorsed by the IEA last month. The Illinois AFL-CIO assigns the Metro East legislator a rating of only 36 percent so far this session. The Illinois Federation of Teachers, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, endorsed Kay’s Democratic opponent Cullen L. Cullen.

The IEA is not an AFL-CIO union.

According to a story published by the fiscally hardright Illinois Policy Institute, Kay attended one of its press conferences last year with a handful of other Republican legislators who “showed their support” for the group’s budget legislation, including a proposal to move all current teachers and government workers into 401(k)-style pension plans. Kay, however, did not co-sponsor that plan and it never was brought to the House floor for a vote. The IEA, of course, was and still is dead-set against the Illinois Policy Institute’s plan.

Kay and Cullen, I’m told, had identical answers to questions posed by the union.

Kay voted against the state pension reform bill, which the teachers appreciated because they fought so hard against the bill’s passage. And, according to folks at the IEA, Kay clearly went out of his way to obtain their endorsement this year. So, after rejecting him three elections in a row, the union awarded it to the Republican.

The IEA is understandably worried about what could happen if Bruce Rauner is elected.

Rauner has howled about the evils of teachers unions

VIEWS Rich Miller for years. The IEA will need allies in both parties to fend off Rauner’s expected attacks on their collective bargaining rights and tenure. A friendly voice in the House Republican caucus probably wouldn’t hurt when a Gov. Rauner is pushing those legislators to fall into lock step.

Also, I’m told, the IEA rank and file has quite a few members who really don’t care for House Speaker Michael Madigan, particularly downstate, but also in some parts of suburbia.

Madigan, of course, also has been known to try and “flip” a member whenever he deems it necessary. So, a candidate beholden to Madigan might not always be considered trustworthy.

Kay, on the other hand, could never be confused with being a Madigan ally, and also has an independent streak when it comes to his own party.

And there are those beneath the statehouse dome who figure that Madigan, despite his anti-Rauner campaign rhetoric these days, might eventually decide to work with the Republican against the teachers unions just like he did a few years ago. So why give Madigan another “duckling” such as Cullen when a Republican might very well turn out to be far more trustworthy?

In other words, the IEA’s endorsement of Kay makes perfect sense – at least as far as anything makes sense at the Illinois statehouse.

That’s not a good answer. And why you’re thinking this is a good answer, I don’t know, but let’s talk about that for a minute. That’s never been done on a (game) show, where the host questions the person’s response. And I brought that to a game show business and I turned that into a really, really fun time. I’m not mean to any of the contestants. I’m only repeating back what you said, so if you said it, you can’t get mad at me for repeating it over and over and over.

By EMILY YAHR The Washington Post Steve Harvey? Yeah, he’s having a pretty good year.

His daytime talk show, which kicked off its third season Sept. 8, has thrived in an era in which similar ventures crash and burn (Katie Couric, Bethenny Frankel, Anderson Cooper and too many others to name). He won two Daytime Emmy awards, one for his talk show and another as Outstanding Game Show Host for the syndicated “Family Feud,” a franchise he’s largely credited with saving. “Think Like a Man Too,” the second movie in a franchise based on his best-selling relationship advice book, was a hit at the box office. He’s got a radio program, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show.” Plus, there’s another book coming out this fall, “Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success,” which he calls a “game-changer.”

He’s matter-of-fact about his impressive list of accomplishments, and why shouldn’t he be? Women follow his candid dating advice so closely that they frequently approach him on the street and ask, “Steve, can you find me a man?”

We got him on the phone a few weeks ago shortly after he landed in Chicago (he films his talk and radio shows there) and asked him about what’s left to conquer in the entertainment world.

Emily Yahr: So many daytime talk shows struggle and get canceled almost immediately. What sets yours apart?

Steve Harvey: I think the authenticity resonates with people for the most part, because I have opinions and I’m not afraid to say them and I don’t care if it’s politically correct or not. My thoughts on child-rearing, on dating, on relationships, on your boss, on your attitude about money, whatever it is. I’m not afraid to say it.

Yahr: The daytime talk show audience is mainly geared toward women, so what’s the most common thing you hear from women about why they like your show?

Harvey: The honesty resonates with them – a lot of times I hear that from women.

They’re interested in my take on a lot of different things. Because they know I’m going to be very honest, and they know that I speak from a position of realness, that I don’t give them canned answers. I don’t give them the answer that my publicist told me I should say, or my marketing guy told me I should say. I give it to them straight. I think that they enjoy smiling during the middle of the day.

Yahr: You cover such serious topics sometimes – people looking for missing loved ones, for example.

How do you walk that line between also making it funny?

Harvey: It’s tough because you gotta stay serious when it’s time to stay serious – I shed a couple tears on the show I wasn’t really looking for. Because some of it affects me, you know, I’m looking at

the person sitting here and I can feel their energy and they’re being very genuine and they’re really trying to pull it together. Or they’re really looking for somebody that they missed in their life, and I can relate to a person wanting something so badly and it’s not happening. ... But at the same time, I try to interject a little bit of humor when I can so we can keep everybody OK.

Yahr: When people see you on the street, do they corner you and try to ask for advice?

Harvey: The majority of things I get from women is, “Steve, can you find me a man?” That’s my number one request. I say, “Well, you know, I can help you out, but I don’t know if I can find him.

He’s going to find you.”

Yahr: You’re credited with saving “Family Feud” from cancellation in 2010. How do you inject your own personality into that show while still keeping the game running smoothly? Can you do it in your sleep at this point or is it challenging?

Harvey: It’s not a challenge at all, I’m doing the thing I was born to do. So, I think it was really, really important for me to interject more humor into the show. Every answer a person gives is not going to be on the board – I don’t care how hard the family is clapping, saying, “Good answer, good

Harvey: (Laughs.) I wish I could say that I did – that was the plan, but nah. (The publisher) told me that a huge literary book is 250,000 copies.

I told them I would sell 750,000 books. They laughed.

I heard them, they were saying, “Yeah, that’s really nice, Steve, yeah, sure. If we sell 100,000 copies we’re going to be very happy 200,000 copies and we’re bananas.”

Well what is it now? At 3.8 million copies, a movie, two movies?

Yahr: And this new book will take the same approach, just not about relationships?

Harvey: This new book, let me tell you something: This book right here, it’s gonna be a game-changer. This book right here will transform so many lives because I’m talking to where the average person is.

And you know how I know that? Because I’ve been there.

See, I’ve fallen and thought I couldn’t get back up. I’ve been written off and told I wasn’t going to ever be nothing. I jumped and took a chance, a leap of faith. I’ve been homeless. I’ve been dead broke and I’ve been well off.

The pickings are just as slim on our side of the fence. My hints to the “fairer sex”: 1. Don’t overdo your makeup and hair in your photos. While some makeup can enhance a lady’s look, we aren’t seeking someone who looks ready to go trick-or-treating.

2. Decent men don’t want to see ALL of your physical attributes on these sites. Dress appropriately for your age.

3. Don’t start your first conversation with, “What do you do and how much money do you make?”

4. You don’t have to speak perfectly, but the teen lingo and

Weight gain from taking antidepressant is usually small Dear Doctor K: My doctor thinks I could benefit from an antidepressant. But I’ve heard that antidepressants cause weight gain and I’m already overweight. Do any antidepressants cause less weight gain than others?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients have asked me that question. Like you, they were hesitating to take antidepressants because of the possibility they would gain weight.

And they’re right: Many antidepressants do cause weight gain in some people. The question has been how much weight gain they cause. A new study may calm those concerns. This large and long-term study shows that weight gain is usually small and differs little from one antidepressant to another.

The study was led by researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. It included more than 19,000 people and lasted for one year.

The men and women in the study took an antidepressant for at least three months. The types of antidepressants they took varied. They included tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa); and serotonin and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor). The researchers checked each person’s weight every three months for a year.

People taking citalopram gained the most weight in the study – an average of one to two pounds. Weight gain linked to other antidepressants was even smaller. Tricyclic antidepressants caused the least weight gain, but these older drugs are no longer prescribed as frequently.

It’s also worth noting that not everyone taking an antidepressant gained weight. Some people actually lost a few pounds. Why is that? My guess is that some people eat more when they’re depressed – just as some people drink more. Some people “drown their sorrows” in food rather than drink. For such folks, lifting their depression with antidepressants leads them to eat less.

Some antidepressants, such as bupropion, are more likely to cause weight loss than weight gain. However, these antidepressants are not the best treatment for all people with depression.

Don’t let worries about weight gain affect your decision to take an antidepressant – or which one to choose. If you do start taking an antidepressant and notice some weight gain, try lifestyle changes. Eating a healthier diet and exercising regularly will not only get your weight back under control, but will have positive effects on your mood as well.

In fact, I have occasionally recommended a daily exercise program for several months as the first type of treatment for depression -- before I prescribe antidepressants. There now is very strong evidence that regular exercise can, in some people, greatly improve depression. That may not sound plausible, but we’re learning that regular exercise can affect brain chemistry in a way that protects the brain not only from depression but also from dementia.

Finally, don’t expect to see a major improvement right away.

It often takes six to eight weeks to see a response. And don’t give up if the first antidepressant doesn’t work. Trying a different one may do the trick.

Teens: What’s in a tattoo? Is it more than just ink and needle marks on the skin? Is it also an announcement that the wearer is a teenager at risk?

Maybe so. A study by the University of Rochester shows that teens with tattoos are more likely to drink, be sexually active, get into fights and engage in other risky behavior.

The study was based on data from a national sample of 6,072 people ages 11 through 20. Of the sample, 4.5 percent reported having at least one tattoo. The members of this group were twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse and three times as likely to have smoked marijuana in the past month. They were also more likely to have done binge drinking; used tobacco products; belonged to a gang; skipped school; gotten poor grades; and been in serious fights, in which either they or their opponents sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

The study also found that teens with tattoos generally have parents with lower levels of education and tend to be from single-parent families. Also, family income is likely to be lower among teens with tattoos. Gender and race were not a major factor.

States have different laws about tattooing. In some states, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to get a tattoo without permission from a parent.

This seems to be most reasonable.

My mother agrees with me, but all she can say is, “When it involves money, your father is the boss.”

All he said was, “I don’t care what the good doctor thinks; you owe me $20 interest.” Whose side are you on? – Brenda, Jackson, Mississippi Dear Brenda: Your father should not receive interest because he did not discuss this with you at the time he agreed to loan you the $500. But if he continues to demand the $20, pay it to him. Family harmony is worth a whole lot more.

Also, remind Dad that if you do wind up paying him interest, you can deduct that amount if you file an income tax return – AND – he must add it to his income!

You will occasionally get too high, but maybe the defense will be imperfect. (The tournament world uses a responder’s rebid of fourth suit or two no-trump, whichever is the cheaper, as a signal that the responder’s hand is very weak.

But that is complicated.) North’s three-heart continuation, a variation of fourth-suit forcing, asked South to bid three no-trump with a heart stopper.

South has seven top tricks: two spades, one heart, one diamond and three clubs. He gets that total up to at least nine if either clubs are 3-2 or the diamond finesse works.

Yesterday, with the spade king in the dummy, declarer had to choose between the two. But now he can try both. He wins with his heart ace and tries dummy’s top clubs. When they split badly, South crosses back to his hand with a spade and runs the diamond queen. The odds of success have risen to 83.9 percent.

MORRIS – Entering the Grundy County Fairgrounds gates for Jalopy Fest this past weekend was like taking a step back in time.

In addition to the vintage cars filling the parking area Saturday and Sunday, the event carried a retro vibe.

On Sunday, young guys and gals showed up in their best vintage attire to compete for Lil’ Miss Jalopy Fest and Mr. Ledfoot.

“It’s gotten bigger every year,” said Casey “Red” Grillo, Jalopy Fest planning committee member. “We had to put in a junior category because the teenagers saw how much fun their little sisters were having.”

The kids gathered under the pavilion, waiting for judges to decide on this year’s winners.

Seven-year-old Molly Brown of Joliet showed up in her custom-made dress – black with white polka dots and an underskirt of red to match the cherry buttons attached to her dress.

That dress, her victory rolls and a glowing smile were enough to get her crowned Lil’ Miss Jalopy Fest 2014.

Six-year-old Henry Frost of Crown Point, Indiana, got off his vintage bicycle long enough to enter the contest, where he was named Little Mr. Ledfoot 2014.

Elephant wash down Morris firefighters offer services as circus visits town

Perhaps that skill set helped firefighters and paramedics with the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District take on the daunting task Monday of washing Wimpy and Del Rita, the two circus elephants that came to town with the Carson & Barnes Circus.

Nikki Benematti and Tommy Doran, formerly of Morris, were united in marriage May 20, 2014, on Bavaro Beach, Dominican Republic.

The bride is the daughter of Mike and Michelle Benematti of Springfield, MO. The groom is the son of Tom and Roberta Doran of Morris.

She is employed as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Tommy is a 2008 graduate of Morris Community High School. He graduated in 2013 from the University of Illinois, College of Aviation. He is employed at St. Louis University as a flight instructor. Construction to start on Rt. 47 over I-80 bridge MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Construction work is scheduled to start, weather permitting, on Monday on Route 47 in Morris over the interstate bridge.

A $451,591 contract was awarded to D Construction of Coal City for the work, which includes concrete patching on Route 47 from just north of Interstate 80 to just south of I-80

JJC capital projects discussed at presentations

Budget finally settled for 2015

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Weeks-long discussion about funding the health department came to a close Monday evening.

After much back and forth, the Grundy County Health Department and the Finance Committee compromised on a 2015 budget of $475,000 for the department, after it made multiple revisions to its numbers.

When the budget process began months ago, the depart-

ment sought to almost double the subsidy it received from the county’s general fund.

This year, the department was allotted $300,000, but officials wanted close to $600,000 for next year’s budget.

They were met with much opposition from the Finance Committee, which ultimately organizes and approves the budget before sending it to the full board in October.

The amount approved Monday still is a $175,000 increase for the department, but most committee members felt it was a fair compromise.

The committee previously set a goal of $450,000 for the department.

Finance Committee members Ken Iverson and Dick Joyce favored providing the department with $492,000, which would be enough to hire a part-time health educator.

“This is one of the most important things we can do with our money. I know things are tight, but it looks to me like they’ve made every possible cut they can find,” Iverson said.

“These are people’s lives we’re talking about,” he continued later.

According to board member Chris Balkema, this still would be the most-expensive budget ever approved for the health department, which did not sit well with some mem-

bers, even after approving the figure.

“My opinion is, we gave you a target number and you’re still significantly higher than that. I like the target number we established, and I think we need to build your program around it,” Finance Committee Chairman John Galloway said Monday.

County officials are nearly finished with the budgeting process for fiscal year 2015 – which begins Dec. 1 – and intend to place the proposed budget on file in October.

Once on file, residents can comment on the proposed budget.

The county will approve the finalized budget in November.

Financial Manager Michelle Bohacik said they were able to come down from $600,000 after they discovered additional revenue sources and scaled back some of the positions they wanted to fill.

In one example, the department wanted to hire a health educator who would work with local schools to educate parents and children on healthy eating habits.

The educator position was ultimately sacrificed to bring costs down.

• ELEPHANTS Continued from page 4 Morris Fire Department paramedic Caleb Dupes said he thought it was a joke when Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes told them they would be washing elephants Monday.

“There’s a first time for everything,” Dupes said. “We put a lot of faith in the trainer, and he did well.”

Andrew Meloun, 12, came to watch the elephants get their bath and said he’d be happy to do it.

“It was cool,” he said.

Steffes said the circus asks the department to help with the elephants whenever they come to town. He believes it’s a great chance for the community to see not only the elephants, but also his firefighters and paramedics doing something good.

“It’s good for the fire department and good for visitors to see how well the elephants behave,” Steffes said.

Alyssa See, 15, had never seen an elephant up close before.

“I really liked it,” she said.

“Zoos don’t always have them.”

She was surprised how small their ears were.

“I didn’t know they’d just lie down for their bath,” she said.

“It looked like they were smiling.”

Trainer Louie Del Moral has worked with 42-year-old Wimpy and 43-year-old Del Rita for several years. The elephants listen to his commands as they prepare for their bath.

When there isn’t a fire department to wash them, the circus uses a pressure washer and the 300 gallons of water it carries on its truck to clean them for their performance.

“We wash them every day and that gives us the opportunity to check their skin and make sure they don’t have bumps or abrasions,” Tabitha said. “They love water, they love to make mud, and they love to make a mess.”

KINSMAN – A fire caused about $200,000 in damages to a Kinsman home Sunday, but everyone inside escaped without injuries, fire officials said.

Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District and 10 other fire companies responded to the structure fire at about 10:51 p.m. Sunday at 120 W. Indian Trail Road in Kinsman.

Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a fire on the rear porch entrance had spread to the attic.

Until fire crews arrived, a Grundy County Sheriff’s deputy and the homeowner used

a garden hose to prevent the flames from spreading.

“They were able to squirt the water from the garden hose up into the attic area.

Believe it or not, that couple gallons per minute they were spraying really made a big difference on that house,” Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said Monday.

The home’s two occupants were woken up by the flickering of flames through their windows when the fire began.

They called emergency crews shortly thereafter. The occupants evacuated the house with no injuries, Steffes reported.

The Grundy County deputy was treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

Steffes said the house was saved and will likely only need repairs thanks to help from other departments and the cooperation of the homeowner and deputy.

The incident was investigated by MABAS Division 15 fire investigators, comprised of members from the Troy, Coal City, Mazon and Kinsman fire departments.

MABAS ruled the cause of fire to be undetermined, but not suspicious in nature.

Minooka, Coal City, Lisbon, Seneca, Gardner, Mazon, Wilmington, Braidwood, Channahon and Elwood Fire Units and Grundy County Emergency Management Agency also assisted at the scene.

MORRIS – Morris schools received a fitting gift from Morris officials this week.

The City of Morris donated a Midland weather alert radio to every school within city limits, just in time for National Preparedness Month.

All area elementary schools – Nettle Creek, Immaculate Conception, Saratoga, Shabonna and White Oak – as well as Morris Community High School and Grundy Area Vocational Center received the radios.

The National Weather Service-certified radio is programmed to broadcast local severe weather and emergency alerts directly from the weather service.

The schools will use the radio in conjunction with the school’s current alert system, which involves direct emails from the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency.
