20.

This event will be held in the Morris Community High School auditorium.

The times this year will be from noon to 4 p.m., according to a news release from the Corn Festival office.

Entries are $5, cash only, for each show and are being taken at the Corn Festival office, 909 N. Liberty St., Morris.

The office is in the train depot that also houses the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, and office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Corn Festival office entrance is at the east side (back) of the building.

Deadline for entry is 5 p.m.

Sept. 16. No entries will be accepted by phone, fax or mail.

All entries must be made by the deadline; no entries will be accepted on the day of the show.

Entries for children under 6 months of age will not be accepted.

Categories for the show are: 6 to 12 months, 13 to 23 months, 2 years, 3 years, and 4 to 5 years.

Boys and girls are judged separately. There also is a category for twins and/or triplets.

Please note that all photos will not be mailed back to owners. Photos must be picked up at the Corn Festival office between Sept. 23 and Oct. 30.

Lisbon Labor Day celebration draws children, family alike to parade and games

“It’s a fun thing for the family,” she said. “They have a good time.”

Kaleb Carlson, 8, of Lisbon pushed 1-year-old Bryce Friestad around on a pedal tractor, stopping only to hand over the tractor so the official tractor pull could get under way.

“Labor day is my favorite holiday,” Carlson said. “They have bouncy houses, and we get to see the animals.”

The animals were housed in John Moore Park at a petting zoo where kids could see, pet and feed a few of them.

Kaleb Carlson said his favorite animal was the donkey.

LISBON – Lisbon Labor Day annual celebration drew a crowd of families despite a downpour that started after the annual parade.

Lisbon Mayor Jay Benckendorf said the event continues to draw people because it reminds them of a simpler time.

“It almost went away eight years ago, but a committee stepped up and they’ve done a good job of keeping it going,” Benckendorf said. “It reminds you of the old days, when it was a lot simpler. Everyone knows everyone here and it’s almost like a reunion.”

While the rain came down, the kids at the fire department didn’t seem to notice. They were ready to get soaked as they competed against one another in the kiddie water fights.

In fact, splashing about is Minooka 6-year-old Avery Selk’s favorite part of the day.

“The hardest part is getting the hose on the can,” she said with water dripping from her nose. “This is my second year and I like it because you get wet.”

Evie Sherman, 11, of Minooka said the rain doesn’t bother it at all either, she was just there to enjoy her first Lisbon Days. However, the day isn’t only fun and games.

Under a pavilion Mackenzie Fletcher and Savanna Flowers, both 17, of Lisbon worked alongside 16-year-old Kyle Eike of Newark to make sno-cones and cotton candy to raise money for the Newark Cheerleaders.

The girls said money raised would be used to help buy items needed like uniforms and T-shirts. The three haven’t always worked the Labor Day festivities, however, and they laughed as they discussed past Labor Day events they’ve enjoyed.

County OKs admin center repair bids

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The county is going forward with some repair and maintenance work for the roof of the Grundy County Administration Building.

During a Thursday night meeting, the Grundy County Facilities Committee gave the go-ahead for the work.

County Administrator Doug Pryor said Friday he and maintenance director Tony Arnold had gone up on the roof to see what repairs may need to be done.

“The roof is in pretty good

condition actually,” Pryor said. “We just need to perform the maintenance to keep it in good condition.”

Arnold told the committee the county had received two bids on the roof despite asking four contractors for bids.

The low bid, which was approved by the committee, was from R.B. Crowther Company for $7,855.

Arnold said the only other bid was for $19,985.

Pryor said the county has been anticipating the roof repair and had the money set aside in the 2015 capital fund.

Arnold also updated the committee and asked for a

positive recommendation to the Finance Committee for the removal of a fuel tank that was used with the old generator that was replaced this year.

Pryor said the county already had the fuel removed from the bottom of the tank and is ready to move forward with the removal of the tank.

Because of Environmental Protection Agency laws, the county also will have to do a mandatory environmental engineering study to make sure the tank isn’t leaking.

“We’re very confident that it’s not leaking,” Pryor said.

“The level of the fuel that was

in there hasn’t changed since they stopped using it.”

Pryor said the county had set aside money in the contingency fund on the 2015 budget to have the tank removed, and the total cost came in below what was budgeted.

The environmental engineering study bid will go to EnMarc and Associates for $2,850; and the removal and filling in of the tank will go to the low bidder, Fatlan Trucking & Excavating, in the amount of $8,000.

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The annual “Home for the Holidays” weekend will be celebrated in Morris from Nov. 27 to 29.

This holiday tradition offers something special for every member of the family who attends the Christmas House Walk and complimentary tea, as well as a variety of other holiday activities.

Among the activities are Breakfast with Santa, Festival of Trees, Children’s Lantern Making, Santa and his Reindeer and a lighted holiday parade welcoming Saint Nick to historical downtown Morris, according to a news release from the Home for the Holidays Committee.

The House Walk will return Saturday to accommodate the busy holiday weekend.

After years of competing with Black Friday sales, the decision was made to keep the House Walk on Saturday.

Arnold also told the committee they are seeking to hire one part-time maintenance worker and one fulltime maintenance employee.

The full-time position pays $13.81 an hour and is based on a 40-hour work week, and the part-time position pays $9.28 an hour and is based on a 19hour work week.

Job postings have been made for both positions, and the county will be accepting applicants through next week.

Aeromodelers show returns to Morris Model jet, helicopters to perform

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Dancing Giants Air Show is coming back to Morris.

After a successful event in September 2012, show director and announcer Dave Scoggin said anticipation has built over the last few years as people involved in the hobby of radio-controlled flying keep asking him to put on another show.

The time has come for the Grundy Area Aeromodelers to perform a Morris show again, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 5240 Airport Road in rural Morris.

“I decided we should give it a shot this year,” Scoggin said.

“Everyone seems really excited about it, and we’re glad to do it again.”

The seven-hour show will have three- to five-minute performances by 10 people throughout the day.

The group of 10 includes both a performance with a turbine jet and an aerobatic helicopter.

“Rather than flying high, they will be doing a lot of what we call ‘3D maneuvers’, which means the aircraft will be tumbling almost on top of itself quite a bit,” Scoggin said.

The hobby has grown considerably in the last few years, Scoggin said. Most of the performers are adults. But the youngest is 10 years old. The second-youngest is 15-year-old Brandon Sobolewski of Lake in the Hills.

His father, Steve Sobolewski, said they both picked up the hobby about six years ago because a friend of his urged him to do it.

When his son saw what the radio-controlled planes could do, he was immediately interested.

“Now, he tries to fly [the plane] every day,” Steve Sobolewski said on his way Friday to Muncie, Indiana, for an air show. “From April to October we travel at least once a month to a show.”

The sea of blue and black that overtook Antioch Community High School represented the thousands who came to pay tribute to Gliniewicz during a visitation, funeral and procession.

The desire to say a final goodbye to Gliniewicz, who was shot and killed Sept.1, was widespread throughout the state and the country.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner was among those who attended, Lake County Det. Chris Covelli confirmed, as well as out-of-state family, friends, strangers and countless law enforcement personnel, some from as far as New York.

“We are with you, Joe,”

said Officer Rachel Smithberg, of the Joliet Police Department during the funeral.

“And we know you will always be with us.”

Gliniewicz, 52, died Sept.

1 after he went to investigate

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Just months after completing interior renovation work, UC Davis-Callahan Funeral Home has added a new service to help families share memories.

The funeral home, which has been in the community for more than 130 years, is located in a historical building at 301 W. Washington St. in downtown Morris.

It offers electronic photo displays on five, 37- to 47-inch televisions mounted throughout the home, according to a news release from the funeral home.

“It’s heartwarming to see the families gather around with multiple grandchildren and share their memories while watching the photos of their loved one,” funeral director and owner John Callahan said in the release.

UC Davis-Callahan is a 10,000-square-foot funeral home that is handicap-accessible and includes a chapel.

In a home that size, it is important to make sure those saying goodbye are able to see the photos everywhere, so a television is in every public room. Families can provide photos electronically to be downloaded to the software or bring in physical photos to be scanned.

The staff then can design the photo displays with different backgrounds, frames and scrapbook themes. Background music can be added.

The new display is included with all types of services offered. The new electronic photo displays are played through the computer system, and a DVD is created for the family to take home.

If you like exciting high school football, this was the week for you. Three of the four area teams – Morris, Minooka and Coal City – had games decided in their final minutes.

The fourth team, Seneca, got into the win column.

Let’s start in Wilmington, where Coal City and the defending Class 3A state champion Wildcats, coached by Morris graduate Jeff Reents, renewed their rivalry.

There’s something about a Coal City versus Wilmington game that is special. Even though it’s early in the season, the anticipation for that matchup is huge.

The crowd was more than the stands on either side could handle, and fans lined the fence outside the track by the time the sophomore game reached its fourth quarter.

Then there’s the introduction of the Wilmington team, heralded by cannon fire, two flanks of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the Wildcats making their entrance through the woods beyond the south end zone.

After all that pomp and circumstance, it was time for the game between teams that won big in the season’s first week.

Wilmington recorded a 48-13 win over Sandwich, and Coal City routed Reed-Custer, 47-0.

Things looked good for Coal City when the Coalers forced a fumble on Wilmington’s first offensive play and Mike Pampuch recovered it. The Wildcats returned the favor when Coal City fumbled on its first play, with Wilmington’s Robert Van Duyne recovering the ball. It set the tone for a game that would be an emotional roller coaster for both sides.

Wilmington struck first, with Nick Hawkins going 44 yards for a touchdown. Coal City answered with a 1-yard TD run by Brad Churnovic, followed by a 29-yard field goal by Brad Littleton and a 65-yard TD pass from Nick Micetich to Littleton to make it 16-7 Coal City at halftime.

The Lady Irish began play with a 25-20, 27-25 win over Prairie Central, then cruised past Hinckley-Big Rock, 25-8, 25-14. Seneca then defeated host Somonauk, 27-25, 25-23, before outlasting Dwight, 3331, 25-20, and then concluded action with a 25-8, 25-14 win over Earlville-Leland.

Karlie Cade and Emily Woods dominated the stat sheet for Seneca, as Cade had 62 service points, including 13 aces, 31 assists and 17 digs in five matches. Woods had 17

Jones-Quartey brings small school mentality locker room

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – If coming from a tiny Division II school with an enrollment less than 4000 is a detriment to Harold Jones-Quartey, he won’t say it.

Instead, the Bears’ undrafted rookie safety from University of Findlay thinks his humble beginnings gives him an upper hand.

“I think it’s an advantage. ... I have the biggest chip on my shoulder,” he said after Monday’s practice, his first in a Bears uniform. “Coaches told me that’s what they like about me – the chip that I play with. Coming from D-2, I’m not angry, but I’m always

on edge on the field.”

The Bears claimed Jones-Quartey off waivers from the Cardinals on Saturday, and he was, “basically learning the plays out on the field” at Halas Hall six days before the season begins.

Jones-Quartey joins a safety group that has one experienced starter – threetime Pro Bowler Antrel Rolle – and three safeties with six combined NFL starts – Adrian Amos, Brock Vereen and Demontre Hurst.

Amos, a fellow rookie, has started alongside Rolle since the second preseason game, but competition should be heated at a green position.

Jones-Quartey’s focus is learning the defense, then

connecting the verbiage, all while helping in any way possible on special teams.

“I’m ready to do whatever coach needs me to do [on special teams]. Eventually work my way up to the top,” he said. “But it’s a business and I have to perform to stay here. So I’m excited to be here but also sort of anxious to get on the field to show them what I can do.”

Physicality, he said, is his calling card, and Jones-Quartey was quick to explain he sees a lot of similarities between the Cardinals’ defense and what Vic Fangio runs.

“We have the same fire zones here – it’s just called something else. Nickel blitzes, it’s all very similar,”

The Cardinals’ coaches came away impressed with Jones-Quartey’s camp, he said, but it was a “numbers game” in a deep secondary.

Before receiving word he’d been claimed by Chicago, Jones-Quartey heard from the Giants, another team unsettled at safety, but two slots behind the Bears for waiver priority.

Jones-Quartey relished his chance to work with the Cardinals, but he admitted being in the same locker room with Rolle, whom he admired growing up, is surreal.

“I’ve got my eye on him, watching everything he does

because he’s one of those safeties that I actually look up to,” he said. “It’s just awesome to be around guys like that. Just get that energy and be able to learn so much from them.”

Unlike Rolle, the former Hurricane and eighth overall player selected in 2005, Jones-Quartey has taken the road less traveled to Chicago.

It’s something he’s cognizant of every time he steps on the field.

“I can’t take any plays off because I don’t have the luxury of being a drafted player,” he said. “So every single play I have an edge, I want to prove to that guy standing across from me that it’s going to be a long day for them.”

Look at the North hand in today’s diagram. It has 6-4 distribution. After opening one heart and hearing partner respond one spade, would you rebid two diamonds or two hearts?

Some columnists recommend that with a minimum 6-4, you bid the six-card suit twice, then (if there is another round) show the four-card suit. But with extra values, you bid six, four, six.

This is definitely wrong with six spades and four hearts; show those majors.

At least rebidding the six-card suit limits the hand to 12-14 points, when rebidding in a new suit shows some 1217 points. But it risks missing a much better fit in the second suit.

In this auction, South should have passed out two hearts. His two-notrump rebid promised a maximum pass. True, North might have continued with three diamonds, backing into the best contract. Two hearts and three diamonds would surely have made.

Two no-trump was another story.

West led his fourth-highest club, East put in the nine, and South won with his king. Now declarer should have started to establish dummy’s heart suit. With East holding the spade ace, the contract could have been made. But South erred by finessing dummy’s diamond jack and running that suit, ending in his hand. Then he led the spade king to East’s ace. The play continued: heart to the ace, club to the queen and ace, two more clubs, heart to East’s king, spade to South’s queen, and a spade to West for down two.

Mom’s surprise pregnancy not pleasant one for her girls Dear Abby: I am 44 and my husband of 20 years is 48. On a recent second honeymoon trip to Sweden, I became pregnant.

We already have two beautiful, intelligent daughters, 17 and 14. One started university this fall while the other’s a high school sophomore.

My problem is not so much the high-risk pregnancy, but rather that both of my girls strongly oppose the idea of us keeping the baby. Not only were they not thrilled when I broke the news to them, but they also cried.

My younger daughter is now giving me the cold shoulder. She doesn’t like change and thinks having a sibling will disrupt our life. My older girl said she is glad she will be at the university so she won’t

Teenagers don’t like to consider their parents as sexual beings, which may be part of the reason for their reaction.

Not knowing your girls, I’m not sure what they need to

hear other than you love them and hope at some point they will become mature enough to accept the situation. But do not allow them to put you on the defensive. You don’t owe them an apology. As a matter of fact, they owe you and their father one.

Dear Abby: My mother-inlaw was in a car accident a few months ago and her car was totaled. Since then, my husband takes her food shopping and wherever else she has to go. She has made no effort to buy a new car. She’s content with calling him for every need.

She wasn’t injured and she isn’t disabled. If she doesn’t want to do something, her excuse is, “I’m an old lady.

I can’t do it.” It’s annoying.

She doesn’t come visit or call to check on us. She makes us feel like our family has to do everything for her -- while she claims she’s “independent.”

This has been an issue for a while and I’m sick of it. I suggested she do her grocery shopping online and have it delivered to her house. Once again, she gave the same excuse.

I think she needs a man so I can have my husband back.

Philadelphia has a very large transit system. Surely there is alternate transpor-

tation for her -- buses, taxis, Uber and Lyft come to mind.

If she was so traumatized by the accident that she’s afraid to get behind the wheel again, she may need a therapist to overcome it.

Whatever the reason, this won’t stop until you and your husband quit enabling her. Give her a list of what’s available and “suggest” she use it the next time she calls wanting a ride. If she needs groceries, offer to order them online for her yourself if she isn’t computer literate. And your husband should also offer to help her find a new car.
