Jessica Lynn Bennett, 25, of Morris, passed away unexpectedly on September 5, 2014, as the result of a traffic crash. Her family and fianc were by her bedside at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Born on January 25, 1989, in St. Charles, Illinois, Jessica is the daughter of James and Nancy (Wilder) Bennett.

Jessica was raised and educated in Morris, attended Rainbow Preschool; ICS grades K-8, and graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 2007. She graduated

in 2011 from Millikin University in Decatur, IL, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and also singing with the Women’s Choir for four years.

After college, she began her teaching career as a preschool teacher for two years at Gardner Grade School. She was presently teaching at-risk preschool students at Reed Custer Primary School. Jessica loved and cared greatly for her students, faculty and fellow staff.

Jessica was a member and served as a cantor at Immaculate Conception Church in Morris.

Music was an integral part of her life. She enjoyed fashion, but her love was for animals, especially her dogs, Kringle, Mickey, and her beloved dog, Flash, whom she rescued.

Jessica always had a smile. She was kind-hearted, happy-go-lucky, with a unique sense of humor.

Survived by her parents, James and Nancy; brothers, Andrew Bennett of Aurora and Sam Bennett of Morris; fianc , Kyle Komperda; fianc ‘s father, David Komperda of Morris; fianc s mother, Morinne Komperda of Ottawa, and fianc ‘s brothers, Jeff, Corey and Jacob Komperda, all of Morris. Also survived by maternal grandmother, Marilyn Wilder of Morris; paternal grandparents, George and Joan Bennett of Bloomingdale; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, the Honorable Judge Richard Wilder.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Morris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the

Immaculate Conception Church with Father Edward J. Howe, CR as Presider. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Cremation rites will be accorded.

Memorials may be made in Jessica’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Animal Humane Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

jbourque@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A sharper memory, more energy, a better night’s sleep – Janet Sirvoy has noticed some positive changes since she made early-morning exercise a part of her daily routine.

Last year, Sirvoy began attending the free senior workout classes offered four times a week at the Coal City Public Library. The classes are provided with collaboration from Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

Almost every morning, Sirvoy and more than 20 other seniors from throughout the area pack the meeting room at the Coal City PublicLibrary, 85 N. Garfield St., as they spend a full hour stretching and stepping along with the instructor’s directions.

Sirvoy drives from Wilmington for the 9 a.m. sessions.

Her classmate Donna Avon comes from Braceville.

“It’s better for me to come here than to do it at home, because I’m more dedicated here. I think it’s wonderful that this class is offered for the seniors,” Avon said. “It’s free of charge. That’s a big plus to seniors who are on a fixed income.”

Most of the workout equipment – including dumbells, elastic bands, chairs and balls – are provided through the hospital, library or community donations.

Thursday’s class as a substitute instructor, which she often does.

McGuinn said she keeps the exercises low-impact and encourages each person to work at his or her own comfort level. All first-time attendees must bring a doctor’s consent to ensure everyone’s safety.

Although dubbed “Senior Exercise,” the classes are suitable for those in their early 50s or anyone recovering from a recent surgery, she said.

“It increases range of motion. It helps with balance and coordination, and it can also help ward off memory loss,” McGuinn said.

For Sirvoy, Avon and other women in the class, the morning gatherings are as much about friendship as physical fitness.

“Sometimes, we sneak out and go out for coffee after,” Avon said.

Some of the women also have formed a walking group that meets on the days the class isn’t offered, Avon said.

The class has helped Sirvoy meet new people since her husband died about five years ago, she said.

“They’re used to being home with their spouse, but when their spouse passes away, they can get very lonely, so it’s really nice for them meet other people doing the same thing they are,” McGuinn said.

“Not only is it physically good, it’s mentally good too,” Avon said.

Reed-Custer teacher killed in Route 47 crash

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Jessica Bennett was known for her “angelic voice” and love of others, especially the children she taught at Reed-Custer Primary School where she was a Pre-K teacher.

“She touched a lot of families,” Superintendent Mark Mitchell said. “She was an amazing young teacher.”

He said the district is heartbroken over the loss of Bennett, who was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove after she was Jessica involved in a Bennett two-vehicle collision Thursday night at Routes 47 and 113.

Mitchell said Bennett, of Morris, will be deeply missed by the Reed-Custer School District.

“Just to know her, you know she had a heart of gold,” Mitchell said. “She was getting married, and loved people.

We are heartbroken over the whole thing.”

Bennett, the daughter of James and Nancy Bennett, previously taught preschool at Gardner Grade School.

“Jessica always had a smile. She was kind-hearted, happy-go-lucky, with a unique sense of humor,” her obituary reads.

Bennett was a 2007 graduate of Morris Community High School, where she participated in the theater program.

“Jessica’s talent and beauty graced our stage many times,” said MCHS Drama Club sponsor Andrea Gustafson.

“Redskins Drama has a heavy heart today as we learned of the loss of one of our own.”

She said Jessica’s most memorable part was as Shelby in “Steel Magnolias.”

The DuPage County Coroner’s office said Bennett was

pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove due to multiple injuries sustained in the motor vehicle accident.

Emergency responders were called at 9:10 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Routes 47 and 113 for a report of a collision.

“She was westbound on 113 and came to a stop at the stop sign and then proceeded where she was hit by a tractor-trailer,” Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Friday morning.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said his agency responded to the call for a car versus semitrailer accident.

“We called the Lifestar helicopter before we left for the scene,” Steffes said. “They were able to get the driver free quickly and we diverted the helicopter to the Morris Hospital, where the ambulance met them.”

Bennett was then flown to Good Samaritan Hospital. Her family and fiancé were by her bedside at the hospital, accord-

ing to her obituary.

Investigation of the accident has been handed over to Illinois State Police because a tractor-trailer was involved, Callahan said. He said ISP would be performing a reconstruction of the accident.

Visitation for Bennett has been scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.

Search has started for new principal

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The search for a new principal to replace Darcie Kubinski, who resigned this summer, has begun at Minooka Community High School.

Interim superintendent Jim Blanche told the school board Thursday evening the district has already received several applications through AppliTrack, a web-based human resource recruitment site the school board chose to use for free with an existing membership, rather than hire a search firm.

The deadline for applicants to file for the position is Sept.

19, after which the board and a panel of staff and community members will begin the process of sorting and selecting candidates to interview. Blanche has stated a new principal could be appointed as soon as the spring 2015 semester, although a summer appointment is more likely.

In the meantime, former assistant principal Matt Wikoff is serving as principal, and instructional leader Bert Kooi is interim assistant principal.

The board this week approved appointing Hillary Holden as interim instructional leader to replace Kooi.

In action after closed session, the board also approved allowing fellow school board member Jennifer Miney to substitute teach at the high school.

Also at the board meeting, it

was announced anyone wanting to run for the spring 2015 school board election may begin circulating petitions Sept.

23, and must submit them to the county clerk by Dec. 22.

Miney also reported to members that the boiler for Central Campus would need to be replaced over winter break. The costs for the unit, which was new in 1978, and installation could amount to an estimated $40,000. Miney also said the Building and Grounds Committee had approved adding security gates to an area of South Campus for a total cost of $12,000.

Board member Chris Kobe also told the board that the technology committee had decided to hire an outside technology consultant to take a “fresh look” at several technology problems South Campus has been having.

The board also met and congratulated seniors Kaitlin Schutzius, Anna Shackley, Valeria Yanez, Isabel Ortega, and, in absentia, Halie Hugenberg, for their work on the senior mural, which is now on display in the science hallway of Central Campus.

This year, students were asked to make a mural that represented how the class had worked together to make a difference in the community and all across the globe.

BRIEF State providing money for construction project

The state is providing funding for construction projects in Grundy and Will counties.

More than $4.3 million is being provided for the projects, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation, which will manage the projects.

In Grundy and Will counties, Interstate 80 will receive delineators and guardrail improvements from the Grundy/Will county line to east

of Houbolt Road. The project received $182,617, and will be done by GFS Construction LLC of Libertyville, the lower of two bidders.

In Will County: • Route 6 will be resurfaced from 140 feet east of Interstate 55 eastward in Channahon and Troy Township; $654,574 will be provided for D Construction of Coal City, the lowest of four bidders.

• Route 102 will receive 0.56 miles of resurfacing from south of Ryan Street to north of Route

53 in Wilmington; $464,686 will be provided for D Construction of Coal City, the lowest of four bidders.

• Other projects in Will County include: resurfacing of Division Street in Crest Hill; resurfacing of Route 1 at the East Will County Line; and guardrail and rumble strip improvements on I-80 between Route 30 and Interstate 204; and Route 53 will receive milling and resurfacing from Canton Road to Renwick Road.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District has teamed up with Lifestar helicopter rescue service to save response time in potentially fatal crashes. minutes before the helicopter arrives on scene because before it takes off, the helicopter needs to pass through an inspection checklist.

The HELO program calls for dispatch programs that come across incidents with the words “extrication” or “entrapment” to directly request a helicopter on standby. This allows Lifestar to clear the helicopter for takeoff while paramedics are arriving on scene and assessing trauma victims.

The overlap cuts down the time it takes Lifestar to get to the scene. And if the helicopter is not needed, officials at the scene can cancel the order.

Lifestar helicopters fly out from several locations, including OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria and out

of Joliet.

Hagemann said the HELO program on average sees five to eight requests for helicopters a month. From May to Dec. 31 in 2013, there were 56 HELO requests to areas in Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties.

The program isn’t just used for those involved in vehicle collisions: Steffes said it has been used for burn patients and gunshot victims. And the quicker response time helps paramedics at the scene, too.

“When they hear those rotors of the helicopter, it’s a major relief to first responders,” he said, adding the next step could be joint training sessions with firefighters and Lifestar teams. “This is a very good working relationship.”

MORRIS – The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District has been teaming up with helicopter rescue service Lifestar to shave valuable minutes off response times in potentially fatal crashes.

The “Golden Hour” is the crucial period for a trauma patient to be transported to a level one facility and surgeon.

And Chief Tracy Steffes said a relatively new program with Lifestar is sending helicopters to airlift victims of crashes and other incidents quicker.

“This has absolutely saved lives,” Steffes said.

The program, called Helicopter Early Launch Opportunity, or HELO, was proposed to the fire department by Lifestar Business Development Manager Scott Hagemann 18 months ago. HELO was started by Hagemann as a way to lessen the time it took for rescue helicopters to fly out to the scene.

“It saves seven to 10 minutes off a request for a helicopter,” Hagemann said. “We could be on the scene in six minutes not just in the Morris area. We’ve introduced this program with the Kankakee area and are working with Channahon, Minooka, Braidwood, Troy and Elwood,” among others.

The program changes the protocol for calling in an airlift at the scene of a crash.

In the past, fire officials on scene would call a service like Lifestar during or after extricating victims in critical condition.

District 1 budget shows savings

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The budget for next year for Coal City Community Unit School District shows a deficit budget, which is different than the tentative budget presented last month. The difference is because of teacher negotiations and subsequent signing of teachers contracts.

The preliminary budget saw a savings of $400,000, however, the official budget unanimously approved Wednesday shows a deficit of $264,190.

“We’ve made reductions in line items that aren’t as obvious” Jason Smith, Coal City Unit School District 1 director of business services, said Friday.

Because of a decrease in revenues, the district has scaled back on capital projects this year.

“Each year we look at capital projects and prioritize the urgency,” Smith said. “With the revenue decreasing this year we aren’t going to be as aggressive as we were last year.”

“Moving forward based on the board’s directive we will work to reduce our budget by $250,000 each year until we reach goal.”

Superintendent Kent Bugg said the board knew last year there was more funding then, so members were more aggressive on projects that needed to be completed.

Declining property values prompted the district to implement a $1 million reduction goal beginning next school year.

“Moving forward based on the board’s directive we will work to reduce our budget by $250,000 each year until we reach goal,” Smith said.

District 1 will experience a sharp decline in revenue from Dresden Generating Sta-

tion, the district’s largest tax contributor, which accounts for about 70 percent of the entire school district’s budget.

Last tax year, the plant was given an equalized assessed value of $567 million, but Dresden’s EAV has dropped to $510 million this year.

The decrease was anticipated as the district approved a five-year agreement with Dresden Station about five months ago, which established the station’s property values moving forward.

“We budget for the worstcase scenario, but I’m confident by the end of the year we will be in a surplus budget,” Bugg said.

Despite the revenue reductions, Coal City School District taxpayers will not see their tax rate increase next year as the district keeps the rate at about 3.12 percent, according Bugg.

Instead of raising the tax rate, the district has trimmed its budget by delaying some capital improvements projects, not filling certain vacant personnel positions, and changing some of the district’s bus routes.

Mosquitoes found in Morris test positive for West Nile MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Mosquitoes collected in the city of Morris have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Grundy County Health Department.

This pool of mosquitoes is the second confirmed detection of the virus in Grundy County this year, with the first collected in Braceville in late August, according to a news release from the health department.

Last year, 24 mosquito pools tested positive in the county for West Nile virus.

The health department anticipates increased frequency of West Nile found in mosquitoes as the area enters late summer, which raises the risk of disease transmission to the public. The health department is encouraging residents to take steps to prevent becoming infected with West Nile.

To minimize risks, follow the Illinois Department of Public Health recommended practices: • Reduce: exposure by avoiding the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially

between dusk and dawn. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens and repair or replace those with tears or openings.

• Repel: mosquitoes when outdoors by wearing shoes and socks, long pants and a longsleeved shirt. Apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions.

• Report: to whomever handles mosquito control activities in your area areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations.

Mild cases of West Nile can cause a slight fever or headache, according to the IDPH. More severe infections have a “rapid onset of a high fever with head and body aches, disorientation, tremors, convulsions and, in the most severe cases, paralysis or death,” according to the IDPH. Lisbon track star named Labor Day parade grand marshal MORRIS DAILY HERALD

LISBON – Connor Swanson, 13, from Lisbon, was honored as Grand Marshal for the 2014 Lisbon Labor Day Parade.

Connor attends Lisbon Grade School and is in eighth grade. He is the son of Brian and Amy Swanson and brother of Taryn Swanson. The family has resided in Lisbon since 2004, according to a news release from parade organizers.

Connor brought home two state championship titles this past spring during the IESA track meet held in Peoria.

To qualify for state, sectional participants must either win first place or receive a qualifying time during the sectional track meet. Connor won first place in all four of his sectional events: long jump, 1,600 meter, 800 meter and the 110 meter hurdles. He and his

Air passengers, airlines need to clean up their act In just over a week, three U.S. flights have made unscheduled landings due to passenger conflicts, all of them involving reclining seatbacks, and objections on the part of the already cramped reclinees behind them.

These are people who knew, or should have known, the conditions they were accepting when they bought tickets and boarded the planes, and they should have known better than to let themselves get so exasperated with each other.

That said, the American airline industry is doing little to prevent such incidents; indeed, it seems to be doing everything its bean-counters can think of to make them inevitable. For all except the few who can afford the gold-plated price of first class, commercial air travel in the United States has become a miserable, stressful and claustrophobic experience.

Cramming (and that is not a figurative term in this context) a few more passengers into a cabin to get a few hundred more bucks into the airlines’ coffers clearly trumps even minimal consideration of passenger comfort; and customers are coming up against the limits of their patience with a level of abuse for which they are paying hefty sums of their hard-earned money.

According to Associated Press air industry reporter Scott Mayerowitz, United and Southwest took away an inch of space from each row in some of their jets to squeeze in six more seats; JetBlue did the same ... to make room in the first-class cabin for lie-flat beds. On some of its Boeing jets, American is adding 10 more seats.

It’s not just passengers who are concerned; so are airline service people, for obvious reasons.

“Seats are getting closer together,” Association of Flight Attendants President Sara Nelson told the AP. “We have to de-escalate conflict all the time. ... We haven’t hit the end of it. The conditions continue to march in a direction that will lead to more and more conflict.”

Air travel is already a stressful experience for reasons that aren’t the airlines’ fault. In a post 9/11 world, flight security means long, slow lines and sometimes intrusive screening; travelers have to add hours to a travel day to account for the delays. But most of the money-driven stress of flying is eminently avoidable and frankly, inexcusable.

Southerners who are old enough might remember the old Southern Airways TV ad that satirized Haves/Have-Nots air travel by depicting the “other” cabin as a kind of airborne ghetto, with chickens pecking at the floor and peasants huddled over a bucket of gruel.

That is, we think it was satire.

The only problem is, well-connected Republicans insist it’s not going to happen.

House Speaker John Boehner appeared to settle the impeachment question last month when he called all the talk a “Democratic scam” and added, “We have no plans to impeach the president. We have no future plans.”

So the subject changed to a shutdown. It’s a more substantial accusation; after all, House Republicans have never impeached Obama, but they have shut down the government. But it appears there’s little or nothing to the shutdown talk, either.

Morris holds off Metamora’s last minute charge

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Nearly everyone expected a close, hard-fought game when Morris and Metamora kicked off Friday night.

They got what they expected, in a close Redskins victory, 12-8.

Metamora scored first on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Nick Holman to Jacob Mitchell on a fourth-and-9 play in the second quarter. A two-point conversion run by Zach Rohrback made it, 8-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Morris’ Joey Webb picked up the ball at his own 20 and broke through a seam in the middle before finally being brought down at the Metamora 27. A play later, Morris quarterback Griffin Sobol kept the ball on an option and burst 28 yards through the middle for a touchdown. The Redskins’ two-point conversion failed, and Metamora kept an 8-6 lead, which it took into halftime.

The two teams were nearly equal in yardage in the first half, with Metamora holding a slight edge, 164-105.

Morris was able to reach the red zone late in the third quarter, but a 26-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. The Morris defense held tough and forced a Metamora punt, taking over the its own 46. Griffin Sobol then hit Keagan Sobol with a 31-yard pass to the Metamora 23, and Morris eventually got first-and-goal from the 10.

The drive stalled again, however, and the Redskins missed another field goal, this one from 25 yards out with 8:28 to play.

Linebacker Keagan Sobol highlighted the defense for the Redskins, making plays from sideline to sideline to help stifle the Redbirds’ running game.

When Jacob Web broke up a deep pass and forced a punt, Morris took over at its own 42 with 7:03 to play.

Facing third-and-7 from the Metamora 29 yard line, Griffin Sobol perfectly executed a quarterback draw and again sprinted through the middle of the field for a touchdown, giving the Redskins a 12-8 lead with 4:04 to play. The two-point conversion failed.

After Metamora picked up a first down, Morris’ T.J. Layne sacked Holman for a 10-yard loss. However, a personal foul on the Redskins on the next play gave Metamora those yards back, making it second and 6. After Holman ran for no gain, Metamora was called for holding, making it thirdand-20. However, Holman threw to Brady Fiarfield for a 26-yard gain to the Morris 40 with 1:44 to play. A pass from Holman to Fairfield moved it to the Morris 18, then another went to the Redskins’ 10 yard line. An incompletion made it third-and-3 from the Morris 10.

Holman was sacked by Layne for a loss of four to make it fourth-and-7 from the 14 with 41 seconds left. A pass interference penalty was called on Morris on a ball thrown up for grabs near the goal line, which gave Metamora the ball on the Redskins’ 5 yard line.

NEW LENOX – Minooka’s defense, particularly the secondary, went to school Friday night.

It was no fun at all, at least not in the first half.

With the start of the game pushed to 8:40 p.m. because of storms that delayed the sophomore game for about 75 minutes, the Indians had fallen behind Providence, 42-7, by the end of the first half. Final results were not available as of press time.

The Celtics’ vaunted passing attack was too much, as quarterback Justin Hunniford played pitch-and-catch with his two Division I receivers, Miles Boykin and Nate Vejvoda.

Hunniford was 13 of 15 passing for 215 yards just before the half. Boykin caught seven for 146 yards and three touchdowns, including a 60yard slant-and-run. Vejvoda grabbed four passes for 68 yards and two scores.

Minooka generated some offense and did get on the board late in the second quarter on Nate Gunn’s 3-yard run, after Providence built a 35-0 lead. Sophomore quarterback John Carnagio found Quintin Duro deep down the left sideline, and he broke free to the 3-yard line to complete a 41-yard play.

Lightning delays Coal City, Wilmington matchup Wilmington on verge of big lead when play stopped

cherron@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City’s football team managed to grab the early advantage during Friday’s nonconference game against rival Wilmington.

But the Wildcats responded to that Coaler touchdown with 17 points of their own before the break and maintained that 17-7 lead when play was suspended by lightning in the third quarter.

Wilmington took the second half kickoff and marched down to inside of Coal City’s 20 when the game was halted by the officials with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats (2-0) used a pair of big plays to help them grab the 10-point halftime advantage.

After Parker Czaja scored on a 12-yard run that capped an eight-play drive to give the Coalers (1-1) a 7-0 lead with 4:15 left in the opening quarter, Wilmington answered with a score in just three plays.

Quarterback Mason Southall tossed a long pass to Alex Zlomie, who went up for the grab and then burst down the right side for a 54-yard score that tied things with 2:31 left in the first period.

Early in the second quarter, Wilmington went on an eight-play drive that took it to Coal City’s 16 yard line.

It went up, 10-7, when Jake Casillas kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4:26 left in the half.

Following a Coalers punt, the Wildcats went 56 yards in just three plays with Nick McWilliams sprinting 50 yards down the left side with 1:43 remaining in the opening half.

Fishbain: Well, Joe, we can finally stop talking in hypotheticals and get the actual games going. For the Bears, this will be the unveiling of a revamped defense after an awful 2013 cam-

paign. The biggest weakness of the Bears’ ‘D’ goes against a Bills strength when it comes to Buffalo’s rushing attack with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson.

What can the Bears expect from those two, and how will Doug Marrone’s offense take advantage of a Bears defense that may still be susceptible to the run?

Buscaglia: With the rather interesting and somewhat disheartening preseason that the Bills and EJ Manuel had, Marrone and offensive coordinator

Nathaniel Hackett are likely going to lean on the rushing attack to set the tone.

The key man to watch is Spiller due to his electric running style, full return to health and a better usage approach from Marrone and Hackett. Spiller (speed in space) and Jackson (balance between tackles) have differing running styles that the coaching staff has a fairly good handle on for 2014. They’ll utilize the read option, cutback runs and the screen game in an attempt to further the Bears’ de-

fensive problems.

OTTAWA – Junior Kaylin Korte and the rest of the Morris girls volleyball team had their way with Ottawa on Thursday night, as the Redskins defeated the Pirates, 25-18, 25-15 to win their second straight match.

Korte had team highs with 14 kills and 12 digs in the quick, two-game win for the Redskins (2-0), who host Geneseo on Tuesday in their home opener.

Sophomore Janelle Brehm was next in the offensive scheme with six kills for Morris, while seniors Taya Torkelson and Emma Thomas had five and four, respectively.

Torkelson also collected nine digs, with Brehm and Addison Polite adding five each.

Torkelson led the way with 13 assists and Polite had 11.

Polite led the team with three aces, while Korte had two and Amber Misek, Thomas, Brehm and Torkelson each had one.

Morris lost the sophomore match, 16-25, 25-23, 25-15 and freshman ‘A’ match, 25-15, 2325, 15-9 and won the freshman ‘B’ match, 25-25, 19-19.

Continued from page 17 from a Bears perspective, I am wondering how the Bills’ back seven – without Kiko Alonso and Nigel Bradham, plus some youth in that secondary – puts up with the Bears’ passing attack, whether it’s Matt Forte out of the backfield or the dynamic duo of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.

You can only rely so much on the front four, right?

Buscaglia : Right you are, Kevin. However, that’s exactly what new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will do.

The Bills are banking on Marcell Dareus to reach near the top of the mountain for defensive tackle output, and also on camp standout Jerry Hughes to recapture the form of last season.

The secondary, without the same unique blitzing structure that Mike Pettine provided to hide it, could struggle

mightily against an enhanced passing attack like the one Chicago trots out. Cornerback Leodis McKelvin and safety Da’Norris Searcy will be the two players that could be the most susceptible to being beat for big plays through the air.

The Bills do, however, boast an up-and-coming playmaker in the secondary in Aaron Williams. They want him to take over the Jairus Byrd role, but that is quite obviously easier said than done.

As you’ve pointed out, with the loss of Alonso and Bradham hurt this week, the Bills will look to rookie linebacker Preston Brown on an interim basis. He won’t have a huge role: that will likely go to former Giants and Bengals castoff Keith Rivers as the team’s every down linebacker. The Week 1 linebackers in coverage, though – most notably Rivers – are a complete mystery to this point.

Fishbain: Jim Schwartz’s defensive lines in Detroit did

a pretty good job rattling Jay Cutler, so that will be a nice chess match to see how the Bears combat what Schwartz and the Bills’ D-line have in store for them.

The last thing to touch on here is a big area of concern for Bears fans, and that’s special teams, which I think could be an X-factor in the Bills’ favor with dangerous returners Marquise Goodwin and Leodis McKelvin. The Bears gave up two long returns in the preseason. What’s one thing you’re watching for that could tilt the game in one team’s direction?

Buscaglia: Goodwin and McKelvin are both extremely confident and dangerous in the third phase of the game, but also keep an eye out for C.J. Spiller on kickoffs. The starting running back returned one kick in the preseason, and sneaked atop the team’s first unofficial depth chart for kickoff returns to start the year.

Outside of special teams, the one area to watch is with the Bills offensive line. Unless down by a wide margin, Buffalo will likely depend on its run game and take the ball out of EJ Manuel’s hands for the most part. To this point, the Bills still have more questions than answers with their starting front five. Bears fans should know Chris Williams well, and he’s the starting left guard.

The Bills just flipped Erik Pears inside to right guard two weeks ago and seventh-round rookie right tackle Seantrel Henderson has to prove himself in the regular season as well. If that trio isn’t up to the task, it could be a long day for the Bills on both sides of the ball. If they are, perhaps the Bills can make this game closer than most are expecting.

Fishbain: Despite the pessimism in Chicago after an awful preseason effort in Seattle, folks are pretty confident the Bears get off to a 1-0 start,

but maybe they’ll read what you have to say, Joe, and realize this game could be close.

I can’t let you get out of here without a prediction for the game. What do you got?

Buscaglia: The Bills just don’t have the firepower to keep up with Marc Trestman’s offense and the talent that exists on that side of the ball. If they can extend their drives and kill time off the clock with an overwhelming rushing attack, the Bills have somewhat of a chance. In the end I think it’s just going to be too much for the offense to overcome.

Fear not, Bears fans: I’ve got the Bills dropping the regular season opener, 28-17.

Fishbain: I’ve thought all along that the Bills are going to give the Bears a stiffer test than some think, and your analysis keeps me in that mindset, but I agree, this is still a game the Bears should win with that offense, and the home-field advantage.

••• When asked who had the biggest influence on Sedaris’s own character: I think my father. One thing you can say about my father is that he’s not a hypocrite. My father didn’t want us to smoke, so he quit smoking.

My father is the most disciplined person probably I’ve ever known. He would get up in the morning – we would laugh at him – he would get up and do these little exercises in the living room in his underpants. Every single morning. I don’t know if you can inherit discipline, but I never expected things to happen if you didn’t work every single day at them.

I think, too, perhaps, from going to art school and being around artsy people before then, you start noticing how many people talk about being an artist of one sort or another but you never see them actually doing anything. All they do is talk about it. I think those people made me think more about my dad — that it was better not to talk about it, but just to go into a room and do it.

••• On what influenced his well-known habit of taking a lot of time with readers at book signings and events: When I first moved to Chicago, there was a bookstore near me called the Unabridged Bookstore. I remember I went and saw

I waited in line and when I got up there she didn’t look at me, she didn’t talk to me. She was talking to her publicist about what she was going to do for dinner. And I felt so betrayed.

I just thought, I believed in you. And this was a lot of money. If it’s ever me at that table, things are going to be different.

So, I was at Harvard’s bookstore the night before last and I signed books for 8 hours and 45 minutes.

People were like, “Well, let me let you go.”

I keep them so long at the table that they’re just desperate to get away from me. I mean, it took that long because I talk to everybody.

I would never, ever say to anybody, “Well, there are a lot of people here,” or, “Thanks for coming.”

There have been a few times the bookstore has come in and said something to that effect, and I get upset.

I say, “Don’t! That person is probably burning with shame now. I don’t ever want to make someone feel that way. That’s

not how I want to be doing this.”

People always come and they’ll say, “This must be exhausting.”

And I think, what would possibly make you think that?

It’s people standing in line to say how much they love you.

It’s, like, all I ever dreamed of.

••• When asked if he thinks his humor has gotten better with age: If I look at books I wrote a long time ago, I can see myself trying too hard. It just fills me with shame.

You should never let people see you trying. Quite often young people will give me their writing, and I see them doing it. And they’re kids – they’ll grow out of it.

I grew out of it too. The only problem is I had some books that were written before I grew out of it.

••• On what writing does for Sedaris: It defines my mood, it defines my day. I don’t know that it’s cathartic. But I write in my diary every morning and nothing quite makes

sense to me until I put it on paper. I’m often ashamed of myself. That’s the beauty of a diary, though. It’s not for anyone else, so you’re not being a phony in it.

I said to someone the other day – I don’t know who I was trying to kid – I said, “It’s not that hard being nice to people.” Which makes me sound like such a good guy.

Then I thought about it later. And I thought, “No, it’s not that hard to be nice to nice people. It’s really hard to be nice to people who aren’t nice.” That’s work right there.

••• The best piece of advice he received: When the time is right, things will happen. People will come to you.

Follow list of strategies to reduce belching Dear Doctor K: I burp constantly. What can I do to stop it?

Dear Reader: Occasional burping usually results when foods produce gas during the digestive process and that gas escapes through your mouth. But if you’re burping frequently, it is almost certainly the result of swallowing air. Many people swallow air when they breathe or speak without even realizing it.

You can probably reduce your belching by making lifestyle changes to decrease the amount of air you swallow. For example, don’t drink through a straw or chew gum. If you smoke, quit.

Getting properly fitted dentures can help too, since loose dentures can also cause you to swallow air.

One relatively common cause of burping and belching is lactose intolerance. Lactose is a type of sugar found in dairy products.

Many people, particularly of African or Asian background, have low levels of lactase, an enzyme that digests lactose. As a result, not all of the lactose can be digested. Burping and belching result, along with diarrhea and passing gas. If you think you may have lactose intolerance, talk to your doctor and see if reducing dairy products improves your

If you don’t think you’ve got lactose intolerance, try making some other changes to your diet.

For example, avoid carbonated drinks and whipped desserts, both of which trigger burping. On the other hand, some people include brown rice, barley broth, papaya and pineapple in their diets to reduce their belching. I’m not sure there is scientific evidence of the benefits of such remedies, but some of my patients swear by them. And, in any event, these are all healthy foods.

Whatever you eat, make sure to chew foods slowly. Avoid washing food down with liquids. And try to eat smaller meals.

Take a brisk stroll after eating.

Physical activity encourages food to move through your digestive tract, and it helps relieve bloating and discomfort. Sleep on your stomach or right side. These positions aid in the escape of gas and ease the feeling of fullness.

If belching remains a problem, talk to your doctor. He or she will

probably ask about habits I’ve already mentioned, such as drinking carbonated beverages and chewing gum. Your doctor may also ask about lactose intolerance or other conditions that may cause excess gas.

Your doctor will also want to know about anxiety and psychological problems, since they can contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms. He or she will review your medications. Some drugs – especially those that contain the sugar alcohol sorbitol – can produce gas and bloating.

Your doctor may also refer you to a speech and swallow therapist. This professional can help you modify the way you swallow so that you take in less air. If lifestyle changes aren’t effective, a muscle-relaxant drug can help.

Burping and belching may not be a life-threatening problem, but it sure is embarrassing. And I’ve had patients become less socially active because of this embarrassment. I hope the advice I’ve given leads to a solution for you.

This week, we have seen deals featuring errors by players who are not bridge geniuses, from which we can learn. And here is another. What do you think of the bidding and what should happen in four spades after West leads the heart three?

North’s jump to three spades showed four-card support but less than game-invitational values. With a stronger hand, North would have made a three-heart cue-bid raise. This is an excellent idea because it allows the advancer (or the responder, if South had opened and West overcalled) to show either a weak, distributional raise or a high-card raise.

Should East have rebid four hearts? Yes, perhaps that contract was making. No, because it was almost certain to push South into bidding four spades, which East could not be sure of defeating. Here, though, South was going to bid four spades regardless.

Since West had supported hearts, his low-heart lead guaranteed at least one honor in the suit.

East, hoping that honor was the king, took the first trick with his ace and returned a heart. However, South won with the king and cashed his two top trumps.

When the queen dropped, South claimed.

At trick two, East should have shifted to his singleton diamond.

Here, that would have worked perfectly. West would have won with his ace and given his partner a diamond ruff. East would then have cashed the club ace for down one.
