SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The second installment of Grundy County real estate taxes is due Tuesday.

The first installment was due June 8 and has a 3 percent late charge, which is calculated at 1½ percent a month – with partial months counting as whole months – and is noted on the tax bill stub, according to a news release from the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office.

Payments may be made at the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office, local banks listed on the reverse side of the tax bill, with a credit card or bank withdrawal at www. grundyco.org.

There is a 2.7 percent fee added to the amount charged and applicable late fees for the use of credit cards or debit cards, while a bank electronic check is an additional $2.95 convenience fee.

Local banks will collect Grundy County taxes and applicable late charges through Tuesday.

The website will accept payments through Sept. 30.

Grundy County real estate tax payments can be made at www. grundyco.org.

A taxpayers guide also is available on the website as well as at the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office.

The website accepts payments through Sept. 30.

No personal checks will be accepted at the Treasurer’s Office after Sept. 30. Payments must then be made by cash or a bank cashier’s check or money order.

After the deadline dates for online and local bank payment options, all payments must be directed to the Grundy County Collector at 111 E. Washington St. Room 33, PO Box 689, Morris, IL 60450.

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic will offer a Diabetes Prevention Program that starts Sept. 15. WGMC is screening participants to determine whether they fall within the prediabetic range. The Clinic was awarded a two-year grant through the American Medical Association’s Healthy Communities/Healthy America program to implement a lifestyle change program. It uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program which meets for 16 consecutive weeks, followed by eight monthly visits.

The portion of the tax bill “Grundy County Itemized Statement” offers detailed information on the tax districts’ extensions for the current and last years taxes.

Unpaid real estate taxes, special assessments, penalties and additional fees will be offered to registered tax buyers at the Nov. 12 tax sale.

Interested tax buyers must be registered by Oct. 30. Include a $75 check to cover the delinquent list and $250 registration fee.

At the Nov. 12 tax sale, buyers pay delinquent taxes to the collector and then place a line on the property until redeemed.

The interest rate can be as high as 18 percent for a sixmonth period.

Seneca teacher offers Holocaust-themed English class elective

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SENECA – Marilee Applebee has been teaching English at Seneca Township High School for 24 years – and for the past 20, her English students also have learned a little history while sitting in her classroom.

Applebee used to assign the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, a story of Holocaust survival, to her AP English classes. Today, she has an entire semester of the Holocaust in literature and film as a class offering for students.

“When I started we would just read the book and write about it. Then I added projects, and before long it was a whole unit,” she said. “When the state changed and required four years of English for high school students, I thought it was the perfect time to submit my request to teach the semester-long class.”

This year is her fourth year teaching the class, and she said it has been well received by students.

Six years ago, she spent five days at the Skokie Holocaust Museum at a teacher’s workshop. This past summer, she completed 26.5 hours of training on the subject along with

The three-day workshop for teachers is hosted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. “In the face of rising anti-semitism and Holocaust denial, educating students

about this history is becoming increasingly urgent,” Peter Fredlake, director of the museum’s teacher education and special programs, said in a news release. “As the global leader in Holocaust education, the museum works to ensure teachers have the training and resources they need to introduce their students to this im-

portant and complex history – and show them how its lessons remain relevant to all citizens today.”

The conference is part of the museum’s ongoing effort to equip educators throughout the country with the knowledge and skills to effectively bring Holocaust education into their classrooms. Apple-

bee said the program is free of charge to educators who teach in either language arts or history.

“The workshop is free and they give us free books and movies. I was so excited to go,” Applebee said. “I brought back a lot of activities and guidelines to present the students with information.”

She said a key component she learned at the workshop was the museum wants educators across the country to be teaching in the same manner by giving students accurate information that isn’t romanticized.

“They not only gave us the items, they taught us how to utilize what we were given,” she said.

Seneca Principal Marty Voiles said he is happy students are given the opportunity to learn about an important part of history.

“I think it brings worldly experience to our kids,” Voiles said. “That time period and event itself should never be forgotten.”

He said when he was hired by the district, Applebee was already teaching the class, and he is happy with the pride she takes in the class.

Parks committee alters Deer Ridge Park plan Dirt maneuvering in near future

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There’s been a change in the immediate plan for Phase III of development at Deer Ridge Park.

After a lengthy discussion during its meeting Thursday, the City of Morris’ Parks and Annexation Committee decided to seek an estimate for the cost of seeding and adding an erosion blanket to the grounds at the park, which is part of the Deer Ridge Homes subdivision.

The plan as of two weeks ago was to install more playground equipment this fall and do earthwork next year.

“It’s a big change in plans,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Council votes on whether to go out for bid on the rental of equipment to do the work. To save money, the city intends to use Public Works employees to perform the work.

Two weeks ago, the city was looking at the possibility of using donated dirt and the transportation of it from the land beneath upcoming industrial development to construct an exercise hill at the park next year.

What shifted the earthwork to the forefront is that Debbie Donato of Deer Ridge Homes informed the committee the company elected to match an agreement the city hoped to reach with industrial developers.

This includes supplying the dirt and movement of it.

“That $30,000 keeps stretching farther,” Alderman Duane Wolfe said.

Kopczick said fall is the ideal time to plant seed and let it germinate. If it doesn’t grow enough, it will in March when winter breaks.

The committee hopes to squeeze playground equipment installations into the budget in March or April, but Kopczick said the city won’t go over the budgeted dollars to do so.

Before this project, there was no park in the Deer Ridge neighborhood.

In November 2011, Deer Ridge subdivision developers came before the committee requesting a park be developed on the land it dedicated to the city when the subdivision originally was platted.

District to start bids for athletic fields, admin center

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City Community Unit School District 1 board members this week were given plans and estimates to repair and rebuild fields at the high school and a timeline for a new administration office.

The estimations were given by Healy, Bender & Associates Inc. at Wednesday night’s school board meeting.

Scott Rihel, who works for the firm, went over preliminary estimates of the repairs needed at the fields, as well as options the district might want to look at upgrading while it rebuilds.

“The original press boxes were stick-built buildings, with storage below and the press box on top,” Rihel said.

“We can’t do it that way due to code changes.”

Superintendent Kent Bugg said after the meeting that because the buildings were destroyed in the June 22 EF3 tornado, the replacements now

have to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements that require a lift to get a person with a disability into the press box, or they have to be accessible in another way.

Rihel gave the district estimates for both with a lift and storage or as a prefabricated press box and grandstand combo that would allow access via a ramp.

Bugg said the insurance company will cover the least-expensive option, but the board may want to consider other options if they are a better choice and pay for the difference now. He said the new administration building has been discussed for at least 10 years, and the board feels now is the time to go ahead with it.

The board is expected to approve going out to bid on the administration building in October. There will be a special board meeting to go out to bid on the athletic fields so the district can get construction underway and have it prepared for the spring season.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Employees from the LyondellBasell Morris Complex recently hosted a visit from state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield.

LyondellBasell is one of the one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, with manufacturing operations at 55 sites in 18 countries, according to a news release from the company.

Before speaking with employees, Anthony got an upclose look at the plant’s operations.

Richard L. (Dick) and Carol Sereno Walker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, August 21, 2015.

They were married on August 21, 1965, at Park Street Congregational Church in Mazon.

Carol is the daughter of Frank and the late Phyllis Sereno. She developed the Social Service program for Morris Hospital and she also had a private counseling practice. Dick is the son of Leonora and the late Ollie Walker, Jr. He worked for Hyster Company, and later owned Walker Sales, Inc., the local John Deere dealership.

Dick and Carol have lived in Peoria, IL; Portland, Ore; and Sulligent, AL. They have resided in Morris since 1973 where they raised their two children, Kelli Walker, Chicago, and Brian (Jamie) Walker, Somonauk. They have two grandchildren, Kayla Walker (11), and Kyle Walker (8). They have two step-grandchildren, Kelsie Parks (21), and Jensen Parks (16).

The couple celebrated with a private, family only, blessing of their marriage at Park Street Church, at 4:00 pm, on August 21, the same hour they were married in 1965. Carol’s father sang The Lord’s Prayer as he did 50 years ago. A family dinner followed at the Oscar Swann Inn in Geneva.

SBA offers disaster assistance to residents SUBMITTED REPORT The residents and businesses of Coal City who were affected by the June 22 EF3 tornado have the opportunity to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

In addition, residents and businesses affected by other severe storms and flooding between June 7 and July 31 also can apply, according to a news release from the SBA. “Any time you can get help to come in, it’s good news,” Grundy Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Schroeder said. “The tornado didn’t meet the requirement for the presidential disaster declaration for FEMA, but it met this requirement.”

Schroeder said it’s hard to predict if people will take advantage of it, but it’s important to let them know the opportunity is there. He said whether residents pursue it can depend where they are in their recovery process, but the hope is to get the word out.

EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates are as low as 4 percent for businesses, 2.625 percent for nonprofit organizations and 1.688 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amount and terms are set by

Jon Michael Bryant, age 66, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at his home in Odell.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Sept. 4, 2015 at St. Paul?s Catholic Church in Odell. Jon body was donated to science.

Jon was born Jan. 14, 1949, in Mazon, Illinois to Allen and Ruth (Waters) Bryant. He married Susan Ann Sherman on Oct. 21, 1979 in Frankfort, Illinois. She survives in Odell.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Morris.

Leon Gorman, L.L. Bean’s grandson and company leader, dies

He was 80.

Gorman, who died in his Yarmouth home surrounded by family after battling cancer, led the Maine-based company as CEO or chairman for 46 years before retiring as chairman of the board in 2013.

Morris serves up an easy win over Ottawa

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A good serve can be a critical weapon in volleyball. Ideally, it results in an ace, with opponents unable to return it. Even if the serve gets returned, it puts the receiving team on the defensive and can lead to an easy point.

The Morris volleyball team used its serving strength to maximum effect Thursday night in turning back Ottawa, 25-14, 25-12, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover match.

Janelle Brehm led the barrage from the service line with four aces, including three in a five-point stretch where the Redskins widened the first-set lead from 10-8 to 15-8. Klaire Ferguson followed up with a four-point streak of her own, rocketing Morris to a 20-10 lead. In the second set, Ashley Hood took her turn dominating the serve with a six-point run that brought Morris back from a 5-6 deficit to an 11-6 lead.

“The tournament over the weekend definitely pushed us.

All those games were played at a much faster pace, so when we come back to a match like this, it really helps us.”

Stories and legends are a part of human nature. Mankind has perpetuated them throughout history. They captivate us, hold our imaginations hostage and make us always wonder what if. It never takes long and some sort of new “sighting” pops to the forefront on the news to keep the fever alive.

My latest issue of Bassmaster magazine showed up in the mailbox yesterday. Within the first few pages there was a small blurb about an angler on Table Rock Lake in Missouri who encountered Big Foot.

No, not the infamous monster truck, but the hairy, bipod, human-like figure that roams the wooded areas of this country.

Because I have spent countless hours on Table Rock Lake, naturally, I was curious.

Apparently this fisherman witnessed a large, mysterious, creature smashing branches and chucking rocks into the water. The article isn’t clear on whether or not the animal was angry at the angler or not, but he did decide to leave the area. Another sighting. Of course, most of us resort to our skeptical side whenever we hear this. I’m the same way, but deep down, I think there is a small part in many of us that hopes it is true.

To think of a creature that has been able to survive for thousands of years, virtually undetected, and live among us, is remarkable. Most would say

Thirty years ago I would have been more apt to believe the possibility existed, especially in the vast wilderness of the West. But around Table Rock Lake? I don’t know.

There are homes and resorts all over that place. And where there are large stretches of wooded Ozarks, hunters, hikers, birdwatchers and other outdoor enthusiasts abound.

Now throw in the fact that many hunters use trail cameras and all of a sudden, the stories become less plausible and more legend-like in nature.

Almost every part of the United States has its own bigfoot stories. We are no exception here in Grundy County.

Some of the ol’ timers around here surely have heard of the legendary DuPont Monster.

That is our Big Foot. It roams the woods West of Morris in the heavily wooded river valley.

Years ago, when I hunted some property that direction, I first heard of the story. The landowner even showed me a feature article from a Chicago newspaper on the creature.

We laughed, joked and talked about the impossibility of such a thing living around us. A

few days later, I went hunting on that property. As my truck pulled into the darkness of the woods, my overactive mind took off. I opened the driver’s door with more care than normal. My eyes swiveled from side to side. I told myself to get a reality check.

On my way to the stand, in the total black of night, I flinched and twitched at every sound. The pace of my steps quickened and sweat dripped.

The safety of my tree stand beckoned like a safe haven.

Once in place, I looked around.

The inky shadows played tricks. I imagined the DuPont Monster and the position I now found myself in. I was a sitting duck. What was I going to do with my bow? Make it mad and then watch helplessly as the creature scaled my tree and pounded me like a drum.

The sun finally inched upward and my nerves calmed. A once-in-a-lifetime buck could have marched right below my stand and I’m not sure I would have noticed. I laughed at myself and swore I would never admit my imagined fear.

I hunted another 30 minutes and scampered off to my truck.

Years passed since then and no big foot-type creature has been seen that I know of. If you plan a trip to Table Rock Lake, have a camera handy, just in case.

OPINION Budget crisis worsens with no end in sight The state fiscal crisis is only going to get worse, and the solution is becoming more difficult by the day.

As you probably know, the General Assembly and the governor have not yet agreed on a full state budget.

But because of various federal judicial orders, a signed education funding bill and several ongoing statutory “continuing appropriations” (debt service, pension payments, legislative salaries, etc.), the government is on pace to spend billions of dollars more than it will bring in this fiscal year.

Guesstimates say the state could run out of money by March or maybe April if no formal budget agreement is reached. Last year’s budget was based on revenue from a 5 percent income tax that automatically fell to 3.75 percent in January.

On Aug. 18, Federal District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman gave the state three days to make July’s $120 million payment for services to developmentally disabled people.

Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger claimed there wasn’t enough money in the state’s “checking account” to meet state payroll, make required bond, pension and school payments, fund other federal consent decrees and comply with Coleman’s order.

A partial payment of $70 million was made earlier last week, and the rest was paid a few days later after Coleman threatened the state with a contempt of court citation.

The comptroller’s people said their office sets aside about $540 million a month for state pension payments. The comptroller’s office estimates that by November or December, the state will not have enough money in the bank to make its monthly pension payments. But they even can’t

Rauner essentially agreed in private months ago to a one percentage point income tax hike – from the current personal rate of 3.75 percent up to 4.75 percent – if, that is, they first can reach a deal on his Turnaround Agenda.

Let’s say a miracle happens and they come to terms by the first week of September.

In order to bring in the same amount of revenue as a fullyear one percentage point hike, the effective tax rate over the fiscal year’s remaining 10 months would have to be significantly higher than 4.75 percent. And now factor in candidate petition filing, which begins Sept. 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno said not long ago she didn’t see a resolution until December. But if they wait until December, when a threefifths majority still would be required to pass a new budget, why not wait until January, when only a simple majority would be required?

If that happens, then the income tax rate on Jan. 1 – halfway through the fiscal year – would have to be 5.75 percent to produce the same revenues as a 4.75 percent rate back on July 1. One option is to not raise taxes high and just postpone billions of dollars in state bill payments.

False leads a waste of time Law enforcement officers investigating the murder of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz have enough to do trying to track his killer.

They certainly shouldn’t have to waste their time chasing false leads.

But that’s exactly what happened Wednesday night, when a Vernon Hills woman claimed that two men tried to get into her locked car about five miles south of where Gliniewicz was killed.

Authorities say Kristin B. Kiefer, 30, initially told a 911 dispatcher that she had been driving north on Route 12 when she had car troubles and pulled to the side of the road near a cornfield.

She said that she then was approached by two men, one black and one white.

The suspects in the Gliniewicz murder are two white men and one black

man. She said she locked herself in her car, but the men tried to gain access. When she pulled out her cellphone, they fled into the cornfield, she told the dispatcher.

This led to an hourslong manhunt near Lakemoor and Volo involving about 100 officers and K-9 units.

But investigators questioning Kiefer eventually identified holes in her story.

She later admitted that she made it all up, and that she had picked the spot to call 911 because of the Fox Lake shooting.

A nanny, Kiefer said she fabricated the story to gain attention from the family she works for, police said. She was charged with falsifying a police report, and the search was discontinued.

Many officers have been working around the clock since Gliniewicz was killed.

Imagine the adrenaline those called in to chase the false lead must have been feeling thinking they might be close to capturing two cop killers, only to be let down after learning their time and efforts were wasted.

Police are seeking the public’s help identifying and locating Gliniewicz’s killers, and anyone with information that could possibly help should get in touch.

But actions such as Kiefer’s obviously are inexcusable.

At a Thursday bond hearing, a Lake County judge ordered Kiefer jailed, and rightfully so.

Stop the nonsense.

We continue to mourn with and pray for Gliniewicz’s loved ones.

And we continue to hope that his killers are brought to justice soon.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In bridge, bidding decisions can be tricky – as in this deal – and there are 13 tricks in the play.

What do you think of this auction?

How should the play go in five clubs after West leads the diamond 10? Did West have a more effective opening salvo?

The given auction occurred when the deal was originally played. South was a tad nervous in overcalling two clubs, for fear that it would be passed out. But he thought that unlikely given his heart void. West might have raised diamonds. Then North had a tricky decision. With 5-5 in the majors and the useful club king, she did not want to pass, but had only eight points. What would you have done?

I think North should have bid two spades, the higher-ranking of two five-card suits first. If she had, maybe she would have ended in four or more spades. Note that six spades fails if East, after cashing the diamond ace, shifts to a heart.

North, though, preferred to show her stronger suit. Then South bid what he hoped he could make.

East won the first trick with his diamond queen and shifted to a trump. Declarer won in the dummy, played a spade to his queen, trumped a diamond, ran the spade jack, ruffed a heart, drew trumps, and took 11 tricks, losing two diamonds.

West would have done better to lead a trump, which would have killed the contract – but that was tricky to find.
