Jalopy Fest returns to Grundy fairgrounds

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Car enthusiasts can step back in time and check out cars from a bygone era this weekend at Jalopy Fest.

Bernie Myers and his wife, Marcia, of Morris are hosting the fifth annual festival, which celebrates simpler times, Saturday and Sunday at the Grundy County Fairgrounds.

“This car show is a lot different than your typical cruise night,” Myers said.

“You won’t see cars newer than 1964.”

Jalopy Fest is billed as a way to celebrate a more traditional era of automobiles.

You won’t find a 2013 Challenger at this event.

In addition to cars from the 1950s and early 1960s, attendees will find people dressed as if they’d come from a sock hop or the drive-in.

“We’ll have a pin-up contest on Saturday for the ladies, and a little miss pin-up contest on Sunday for the little ladies,” Myers said.

To be shown at Jalopy Fest, custom cars must have a custom of 1972 or older; hot rods must be 1964 or older.

This is the fifth year for the two-day event, which has grown each year, Myers said.

Throughout the weekend, rock a billy bands will play in the pavilion. There will be a bonfire Saturday night, along with a DJ. Food vendors and swap meets also will be on hand.

Resident selected as Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Like a ray of sunshine, Joe Figueroa, of Coal City, spreads warmth to everyone he touches as an Engineering Technician at Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers.

Throughout the organization, he has a reputation for being kind, respectful, professional, honest and trustworthy, according to a news release from the hospital.

These qualities, along with his trademark smile, make Figueroa the kind of guy everyone loves working with.

For these reasons, Figueroa was selected as Morris Hospital August Fire Starter of the Month.

Having worked as a medic in the military for eight years, Figueroa said he was familiar with the hospital setting.

While he has become the Morris Hospital Facility department’s data line specialist, he is considered a jack-of-alltrades and responds to a wide range of requests. As a result, he gets to interact with staff in just about every department and every Morris Hospital facility.

Morris Hospital Facilities Supervisor Mike Strnad said Figueroa is a good ambassador for the department.

For Figueroa, the secret to his success is treating his co-workers like customers and keeping a smile on his face.

He takes time to listen and observe, and when he doesn’t know the answer, he gets one.

He said his work with Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers gives him much satisfaction in return.

NFL finally gets it right If there’s a right time to take a stand on domestic violence and sexual assault, it’s now. Colleges are changing policies, survivors are speaking up and the NFL has finally imposed a new set of rules regarding domestic violence and assault.

Last Thursday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted he had mishandled the case, in which Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was accused of assaulting his fiancee. Rice was let off the hook in July when the league suspended him for only two games.

After that, the NFL faced an uproar from not only advocacy groups but also fans who wanted a harsher punishment. Goodell responded last week with a promise to take a tougher stance on future infractions. He said any NFL employee – not just a player – who engages in assault, battery, domestic violence or sexual assault with physical force will be suspended. In the case of players, the suspension will be without pay for six games after the first offense. For a second offense, the employee will face expulsion from the league for at least one year.

Goodell issued a statement saying his disciplinary decision in the Rice case “led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families.”

“I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn’t get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will.”

If colleges around the country, both large and small, can step up and impose stricter rules regarding sexual assault and violence, a league with as much clout as the NFL surely can – and must.

Many children idolize pro athletes.

High school football players dream of making the NFL. It’s only right that league employees set a good example, on and off the field.

Goodell should be applauded for his decision to treat domestic abuse seriously. His tough approach deserves to be emulated across the professional sports world.

Awake in the face of evil How many times have we heard the phrase “Never again”? How often have we trotted out that old chestnut: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”?

“I don’t want to have on my conscience that I was complicit in something as horrendous as this simply by being quiet,” is how Washington, D.C., Cardinal Donald Wuerl felt about the persecution being wielded against Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq and Syria.

As we applaud Miley Cyrus for not twerking on MTV’s Video Music Awards and Beyonce for her ode to feminism, and argue over whether the Emmys are sexist or not, a moment of silent reflection is in order, to recollect our consciences, choices and priorities.

The execution of American journalist James Foley at the hands of the terrorist group ISIL obligates us to take notice. In a letter a fellow prisoner memorized for

Before he was killed, Bhatti talked about the threats he received for his work against blasphemy laws: “I want to share that I believe in Jesus Christ, who has given his own life for us.

I know what is the meaning of cross, and I am following of the cross, and I am ready to die for a cause.”

That’s real faith. “[T]he spectacle of tragedy has always filled men, not with despair but with a sense of hope and exaltation,” writes Whittaker Chambers, whom National Review founder William F. Buckley Jr. described as “the most important American defector from Communism.”

Chambers asserts: “Trag-

edy occurs when a human soul awakes and seeks, in suffering and pain, to free itself from crime, violence, infamy, even at the cost of life. The struggle is the tragedy – not defeat or death.”

Do we hear the screams?

Will we respond with prayer and action? Will we recognize the truth about the dignity of every man and woman, of whatever or no faith? Will we never again be silent as evil is happening? Or will we be complicit by our silence, distracted rather than living the truth that men and women of our day are dying for? Will we sinners strive to be saints and heralds of truth by the very way we live, by what we choose to do and say?

MINOOKA – It’s been a few years since Minooka’s girls volleyball team has beaten Joliet Catholic Academy.

That helps explain why the Indians and their fans were celebrating on the court after they captured a 25-16, 25-23 nonconference win over the Angels on Wednesday.

Minooka came out of the gates with a strong hitting attack in the opening set and then weathered a determined JCA effort in the second set to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Ginger Perinar led the way for the Indians with 17 kills, four blocks and four digs while Allison Papesh had five kills and Cynthia Ley added five aces and four kills.

“We’ve got a great group of kids that is very focused,” Indians coach Chris Hoelscher said.

“We did some team-building things during the summer, and we asked them to commit to defense. The kids really followed the game plan and we focused a lot on serving, and after having some early errors but when we found our rhythm, then we took over.

“I told Ginger this summer that this would be her coming-out party. She struggled a lot as a freshman and last year a little bit, too. She looks so confident and strong right now.

Nerves showed at the beginning, but you expect that. But we had a great crowd and our Indian Nation takeover group was our seventh or eighth person today, they were fabulous.”

In the opener, things were still close midway through but then the Indians gradually started to pull away. Two kills

by Perinar kicked off a 7-0 run, which featured three aces from Ley as well as another Perinar kill to give the hosts a 23-14 lead.

After the Angels (1-2) were able to get a couple of points back, Perinar closed out the initial set with another kill and a block.

“We wanted to come in hard, and I think that we did well,” Ley said. “I don’t even know that last time that we’d beat JCA so beating them today was really big. This makes our team believe that we’ll be tough to

I like how we’re very good at coming back together after a bad point and get super-excited after a kill.”

The second set was much more competitive after JCA jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage. The Angels held the lead or were tied for it until Minooka grabbed a 16-15 advantage.

After kills by Ley and Perinar, Minooka went up, 18-16 but JCA responded with two kills from Megan Cladis (five kills) to grab a 19-18 lead. Then the hosts used two Perinar kills and another from Emily Hise (three blocks) to move ahead by a 21-19 score.

JCA tied it at 21 and went up 23-22 after a kill by Maddie Naal (four kills) and a long hit. But Minooka responded with a kills

“This definitely was a good win for us,” Diamond said. “Ev-

ery year we really want this one, even though it’s nonconference. It also gives us a good view of how well we might do in the future. We’ve been working re-

The first scoring drive for the Redskins was set up by a screen pass from Ricky Delfavero to Michael Gerischer.

Gerischer that was called down at the four-yard line.

Three plays later, Gerischer found the endzone on a twoyard run. The second touchdown for Morris was a 10-yard run by Michael Feeney.

LAKE FOREST – If it puts any Bears fans at ease after a less-than-inspiring preseason, Bills coach Doug Marrone said he has seen a “much-improved [Bears] defense” this summer compared to last year.

Then again, he is supposed to say that, but Marrone and Bills quarterback EJ Manuel do have the tricky task of preparing for a Bears defense without a ton of tape to go off, if we’re to assume this group truly is “much-improved.”

“I still think they’ve always done a good job, obviously, of creating turnovers,” Marrone said Wednesday on a conference call. “They do a good job, obviously, of cover-

ing. I think they’ve upgraded themselves on the inside with depth with the two young guys on the inside that are playing well.”

Manuel said they are looking at film from last year and this preseason to get ready for Sunday.

“They have great players,” said the second-year quarterback. “Lance Briggs is obviously one of the best linebackers in the league and we know he’s going to come out there and have high energy and great leadership in that position for their defense.”

Marrone referred to his time playing the Bears when he was on the Saints’ offensive staff and also highlighted Briggs. He is not going to come to Soldier Field expecting last year’s Bears defense.

MORRIS – The season-ending Lee Schuler Memorial at Grundy County Speedway is a special race no matter what the year or who comes away with the trophy.

But when a Schuler wins it...

“Well, I’ve been doing this a long time and first is certainly better than second,” Larry Schuler said after capturing the 38th running Sunday. “But for it to be this race to do it in means all the world to me. It really does.”

The 61-lap event, held in honor of Larry Schuler’s legendary father, brought to a close a 2014 season that saw Ricky Baker emerge as a back-to-back late-model champion.

Schuler and Baker ran 1-2 in the feature, which saw a breath-holding final two laps in which the leaders had to negotiate through some oil that had been spilled from the middle of the back straightaway into Turn 4.

Schuler, leading Baker by three car-lengths and with the lapped car of Jeremy Spoonmore just ahead, saw his No. 30 careen crazily through the turn.

Baker’s second-place finish clinched the season championship over Eddie Hoffman, who finished third in the race.

Schuler took the lead from Hoffman with a move on the bottom on Lap 6. For much of the race, he was comfortably in front. Hoffman maintained second place until Lap 23, when Baker zoomed by.

Behind the top three, Anthony Danta finished fourth, ahead of Brandon Clubb, Chris Cooling, John Nutley, James Gregait, David Einhaus and Chuck Sottosanti.

Joe Vinachi closed the Mid-American division season strong by winning his second feature event of the weekend.

Vinachi took the lead from track champion Tommy Knippenberg and held Knippenberg at bay the rest of the way. John Ventrello, Jim Kachel, Chuck Yuris and Luke Baldwin followed.

Born: Feb. 1, 1939; in Aurora, IL Died: Aug. 29, 2014; in Trinidad, CO Joyce Rae Hage, age 75, died with family and dearest friends by her side, in her mountain home outside of Trinidad, Colorado. In the recent years she battled, with great elegance and strength, many illnesses. Her Lord and savior Jesus Christ called her home on August 29, 2014. As a previous long time resident of Yorkville, Joyce will be laid to rest in Cross Lutheran Cemetery next to her beloved husband.

Joyce was born February 1, 1939, in Aurora, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Albert and Pearl (Neubauer) Greenacre.

In 1955, Joyce married what would be her lifelong mate, Joel Edward Hage. Together, they raised five children in the Midwestern farm tradition, eventually settling in on Walker Road in Yorkville, where Joyce thrived creating a beautiful home and garden for her family.

From perennial flowers, fresh garden veggies to the simple overwhelming large lush crop of green lawn, Joyce was the Master Gardner we all strive to be. Helping Joel with the farm animals was a daily event. Her special talent was nanny to the tender piglets that needed just that extra care.

Her sewing craft brought joy to others in the way of reupholstered family heirlooms and tag sale finds, stylish clothing, Barbie clothes and quilts to be treasured long into the future. Her hours of canning and preserving were a way of life but are now remembered as sweet treasures of the past.

Throughout her life, Joyce worked outside of the home in the local pharmacy, hardware

and nursing home. The skills she learned outside the home only strengthened her ability to care for others throughout her life. In her final times, she related to those that cared for her with detailed remembrances of her days as a caregiver.

In 2001, Joyce and Joel moved to Trinidad, Colorado, to start the last great adventure of their life.

Moving near their oldest daughter, Rhonda, who later became her caretaker, they built a treasured mountain home with a new kind of yard that included high mountain plants, wildlife, rocks and vistas.

They made new friends and had new experiences. Now together again Joel and Joyce are on to the ultimate adventure.

Joyce’s love, endless strength, enduring elegance and wry wit will be remembered by all that survive her, including children, Rhonda Olin, Joel (Renate) Hage, Shelly (Michael) Geers, Michael (Sharyn) Hage, and Missy (Eric Hufstetler) Hage; her grandchildren, Derik (Trish) Olin, Nichole (fianc , Dean Tambling) Russell, Josh Ewing, Jason Ewing, Casey Jo Hage, Ryan Geers, Adam (Erica) Geers, Heather (John) Delgado, Jessica (Bob) Diaz, Simone Hage, Brittany Hage, Jamie Hage, Trent Hufstetler, Laryssa Hufstetler, and Macayla Hufstetler; also 14 great-grandchildren; special friends, Mona Borrego, Dan Veverka, Mike and Rhonda Taillon.

Larry was raised and educated in Lincoln, where he graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1958. He would go on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in 1965. On June 30, 1963, Larry married his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Cochran, in Elkville, Illinois. They would go on to make a home in Morris, where he was employed by Shabbona Middle School for seven years as a teacher. Following teaching, Larry would go on to become self-employed doing automotive interior repair for 15 years. He will be remembered as a life-long Saint Louis Cardinals fan.

Just like people, all animals need three things to survive: food, water and shelter.

I am a brown pelican—the state bird of Louisiana. Not too many years ago, all of the brown pelicans in Louisiana died out.

Why? Our food, mostly fish, became poisoned by pesticides.

Fortunately farmers no longer use these poisons and brown pelicans were brought from Florida to start new colonies in Louisiana.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now New Orleans native Harry Connick Jr. was already well into his acting career when it got a boost with his role as genial aquarium honcho Dr. David Haskett in the mostly based-on-fact 2011 film “Dolphin Tale.”

Among Connick’s earlier credits were voicing the hipster Dean in “The Iron Giant,” playing Leo Markus on “Will & Grace,” and the bartender Daniel in “P.S. I Love You.” But it was the dolphin movie that gained him many new young viewers, most of whom had no idea that Connick had already reached veteran status in his pop-jazz singing career.

At a recent interview session for “Dolphin Tale 2,” the always-gracious Connick, still carrying that Louisiana accent, spoke about working in both of those worlds.

Ed Symkus: Is it easier to step back into the shoes of a character you’ve already played?

Harry Connick Jr.: I did a pretty considerable amount of research the first time around because I really wanted to know who this guy was. The second one was obviously much easier because I had done it before.

What was really strange is that it was the exact same set of circumstances as the first one: same city, same set, same cast, so it was very easy to kind of remind myself who he was.

But the first time I went and interviewed marine biologists and marine veterinarians, and I paid attention to how they looked.

I remember my wife saying, “Do you really want to wear those clothes and wear your hair like that?” And I said, “Yeah, I do, because that’s who these people are. They’re scientists, and they’re not really interested in anything but learning about these marine creatures.”

Symkus: How much were you trying to remain accurate and how much room did you have to embellish and make the role your own?

Connick: That was really [director] Charles Martin Smith’s area. Every single nuance of what happened in real life was thoroughly considered with regard to how it would be dramatized in the film.

So, that part was all about him. As a character, you’re working within the realm of what’s on the page. Was I able to sort of manipulate things and do things?

Sure.

As an actor you need to understand everything, so I would say to Charles, “Did this happen?”

And he might say, “Yeah, that happened, and that’s a person who actually did what you’re doing.”

Sometimes you’d be on the set and you wouldn’t know who was hired as an extra or a cast member, and who was actually on the scene when the real story went down. It was a weird kind of altered reality.

Symkus: Have you found your acting work and your singing work crossing over much?

Connick: What’s interesting to me is as you go through your career in the entertainment business, new people are being born and growing up, and becoming teenagers and young adults, and a lot of the people that came to know me through “Dolphin Tale” have no idea that I do anything else.

Now, that’s not a BAD thing. It’s cool!

I’m still making records and touring and stuff. And I’m not doing any more acting than I was doing 20 years ago. It all kind of ebbs and flows.

Symkus: What exactly is the status of your singing right now?

Connick: I’m working on a new record.

But we haven’t even gone in the studio yet. We’re just kind of putting the ideas together. As you know, there’s a lot of

downtime on a film set, and you can get a lot of stuff done in the trailer and the hotel. I’ve written entire records on a movie set, and then when the movie’s done you go in the studio and record it. Then when you finish that it’s time to promote the movie and then it’s time to tour. So, it all kind of works together.

Symkus: You also landed a nice spot as a judge on “American Idol.” Was that a good time for you?

Connick: That was great! I think no matter what genre of music you play, when you rack up a couple of years of experience, and you have your own point of view, no matter who comes in front of you, whether it’s a pop artist or a country artist, it’s not difficult to critique and help shape the young performers.

I mean, let’s face it, I’ve been here for a while, I’ve done it for a while, and I have a lot of experience. I’ve always been a big fan of the show, and it was a great opportunity.

Basically the job is sitting there, listening to music and telling people what you think about it. What’s not to like? I loved it.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips care, and has visitation with the ex’s stepsister, who got the right to grant visitation. Recently we had a birthday party for them. All the grandparents, aunts and uncles were invited. It was a kiddie party, of course, and I jumped into the pool and played with the children.

Study on TV’s health effects not conclusive Dear Doctor K: Is watching TV worse for your health than any other activities that keep you from being active?

Dear Reader: We know that exercise is good for our health, and that too much inactivity is bad for our health. But does it make sense that watching TV is worse than other sedentary activities?

Actually, it may. My colleague Dr. Robert Shmerling is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He noted that a recent study shows watching a lot of TV is worse for your health than other activities that involve long periods of sitting.

The study Dr. Shmerling referred to enrolled more than 13,000 young and middle-aged adults. Researchers asked the study subjects how much time they spent watching TV, using a computer and driving.

During the study: • People who reported watching three or more hours of TV each day had twice the risk of death as those who watched less than an hour each day.

• People who spent the most time driving or using a computer did not have higher rates of death

This study only showed a link between TV and early death. It was not designed to prove whether watching TV actually caused the higher risk of death. People who watch a lot of TV might also do a lot of other things that put their health at risk. They might be under a lot more stress, and TV might be an escape. They might be having trouble sleeping, or are sleep-deprived, and watching TV to try to go to sleep.

And what were the people eating while they watched TV? The study did not say. Three or more hours a day of eating a lot of cheese and nachos might not be the best thing for your health, regardless of what you were doing while you ate.

There were other limitations to this study. For example, people were asked about their activities only once, yet the study lasted years. The study participants’

activity level could have changed dramatically over the years of the study.

What’s more, this study looked at the impact of physical activity, body mass index and smoking on early death. But it did not take into account other factors (like blood pressure) that could have affected the results.

So, I’m not convinced that watching TV is itself hazardous to your health. To put it simply, I don’t plan to cut back on the time I spend with my shows! But just as there are some foods full of empty calories, there are some programs that are “empty TV.” There’s no doubt that substituting physical activity for empty TV would be good for your health.

Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise most days of the week, plus some muscle-strengthening exercises, will get you further down the road to good health than even the most heart-pounding TV drama.

Dr. Wallace: I’m wondering why many companies direct their advertising toward teens. Why do you think they do this since teens do not usually have a whole lot of cash to buy things? I know that I don’t, even though I get a small allowance. – Sara, Portage, Indiana Dear Sara: You are correct. Advertisers aim at teens because they have a certain amount of influence on family purchases. Teenage Research Unlimited found that 71 percent of all teens do some family shopping, with 4 percent doing almost all of it (with their parents’ money). And only 13 percent were told exactly what brand to buy.

This means that about 87 percent of the teens made a decision about which specific brand or label was going home with them.

Manufacturers are aware of teen buying power, and they also know that teens soon become adults, and if they buy Brand X as a teen, they will probably also buy it as an adult.

Dr. Wallace: Last night my boyfriend and I had a disagreement and he got really mad at me and slapped me really hard on the side of my face.

I was totally shocked and started to cry and he apologized and said it would never happen again.

Dear Nameless: Instead of a credit card, why not find out if dad will allow you to have a debit card. But instead of borrowing money, a debit card will let you spend money put into a separate account.

As long as there is money in the account, you can use the card up to the amount available.

Regardless, East should have played his eight at trick one, not the king. West would not have been underleading (leading low away from) the ace. East should have assumed that West had the heart jack.

The rest of the play was fine except that declarer should have drawn the second round of trumps a tad quicker.

Light goes out after 87 years

Originally, the beacon and tower were located near Wedron, in LaSalle County, and were used to guide air mail carriers on their route from Chicago to St. Louis.

In 1926, Charles Lindbergh searched for the Wedron beacon before running out of gas and crashing about 5 miles from where it was located.

More than 20 years ago, the beacon was moved to the Morris airport, according to Vogen, who is still unsure of the exact date of arrival. Records from neither the Grundy nor LaSalle County historical societies had the exact date it was transported.

Before decommissioning the 87-year-old beacon, Vogen said he and the city’s Airport Committee discussed having the light repaired, but discovered the parts needed are no longer being manufactured.

The committee decided to purchase a new light. The replacement project is estimated to cost roughly $8,500, Kopczick

said.

In the meantime, Vogen said he is continuing his research into the beacon’s origins, so he can create a display at the airport.

“As our airport grows into the future, why would we want to lost something like that? It is a point of aeronautic history that we are blessed as a city to be able to have,” Kopczick said. “It’s an important thing for people to see and understand, it wasn’t always like it is today.”

MORRIS – Charles Lindbergh crashed near it; U.S. mail carriers relied on it; and up until recently, the Morris airport used it every night.

The Morris airport beacon had a historic stint illuminating the night sky for close to 87 years before it finally broke last week.

Now, Morris Municipal Airport manager Jeff Vogen is researching the light’s history with plans of eventually putting it on display at the airport.

“The original airway beacons in general, because of their age, are getting rarer and rarer,” Vogen said.

Before radio navigation and global positioning systems, pilots relied on the airway beacons to guide them. They would fly across the country, from Los Angeles to New York, using the beacons as their only point of reference in navigating the night skies.

“This beacon was part of a nationwide, criss-crossing array of routes that were put into place and maintained by the United States Post Office,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

“Think about it – how gutsy were these guys, flying through the dark of night with no radio communication, and the only thing they had were these lights on the ground to show them the way.”

Once the technology advanced, many of the old beacons and their towers were retired from use and either destroyed or recycled, according to Vogen and information from the Federal Aviation Administration.

“They started decommissioning them in the [1940s]. Back then, a lot of them were used for scrap metal in the war effort. The towers were scrapped.

Anything made of metal was reused,” Vogen said.

County could abate Akzo We Care fall fundraiser shifts to Sunday Nobel expansion project

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A proposed upgrade to the Akzo Nobel Chemical plant located on Tabler Road could bring as much as $138.7 million of investment to Grundy County and other taxing districts.

The company is seeking a 5-year tax abatement for its proposed plant expansion, and it received preliminary approval from the Grundy County Tax Committee during Wednesday’s meeting.

“They would like to make this plant the flagship plant and they would like to invest here to go another 30, 40 years,” tax committee chairman Chris Balkema said Wednesday.

“That’s a huge investment for this area, and I think we’re blessed,” he continued.

The committee-approved abatement will go before the full County Board next Tuesday at the September meeting.

If approved by the full board and other taxing bodies, the property tax abatement would rebate 50 percent of taxes every year for every phase of the expansion project.

The tax revenue generated from the upgrades could be anywhere from $1.8 million to $3 million, after the abatement is factored.

Existing tax revenue from the plant is about $555,000, so the expansion has the potential to more than double revenues for taxing bodies.

As proposed, the expansion and upgrade would be finished in three or four phases and take roughly three years to complete.

would created a limited number of new jobs but the plant’s current workforce would be retained, according to information from the Grundy Economic Development Council.

There is a strong likelihood of creating local construction jobs, as the plant expansion will require years of work.

“That would be good for our industry here, from a trades perspective,” Balkema said.

According to GEDC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Norton Ammer, the company is interested in expanding because it wants to stay competitive with other throughout the country.

Akzo’s Morris facility was originally constructed in the early 1970s, according to information from the GEDC. “They’re really at the point where they need to reinvest,” Ammer told the committee.

The company does not anticipate an increase in sound pollution once the plant is modernized. It also pledged to manage any pollution by complying with the Environmental Protection Agency standards, as it has done in previous years.

“The fair will be on the smaller scale, but will give those who like to shop something to look at,” Gaska said.

No family event is complete without the family pet, so a pet pageant will be held, with animals judged in two categories: beauty and brains.

“The dogs will be able to strut their stuff,” Gaska said.

BRIEFS Construction work to start on Route 47 MORRIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation will, weather permitting, start work Thursday on Route 47 in Morris and north of Morris.

A $304,459 contract has been awarded to “D” Construction Inc. of Coal City for the work, which includes intermittent milling and resurfacing on Route 47 from Route 71 in Yorkville to Caton Farm Road, and also from south of Interstate 80 to Benton Street in Morris, according to a news release from IDOT. Specific areas of work are scattered throughout the project limits with only significant surface deterioration and other problem areas being addressed.

Work is expected to be complete

by the end of September.

Motorists are encourage to use extreme caution when traveling along the detour and are advised to be alert for flaggers and all other workers.

CHANNAHON – The Channahon Village Board on Tuesday approved a letter of intent with the Illinois Department of Transportation for road work at the Route 6/Interstate 55 interchange.

Also Tuesday, trustees appointed two new members of the Fire and Police Commission, and set future dates for board meeting and staff holidays.

The letter of intent concerning the interchange project establishes that Channahon agrees with the costs of the project, which will begin at the interchange next year.

The village’s costs will be about $500,000 to rehabilitate the overpass and reconstruct the southwest, southeast and northeast I-55 ramps; widen Route 6 with a barrier median; place emergency vehicle preemption devices on new traffic signals; construct bicycle paths and put up lighting.

State to hold unclaimed property auction SPRINGFIELD – Broaches, jewelry and stamp collections are just some of the items that Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is offering in the next Illinois Treasurer’s Online Unclaimed Property Auction.

The auction starts at 10 a.m.

Monday and closes at 10 a.m.

Sept. 12. Those interested in previewing the items up for

All items for sale in this auction have been appraised by an outside vendor. The sale price of each lot must reach at least 75 percent of the appraised value.

MORRIS – What amenities and services does Grundy County need for our senior citizens to lead full and productive retirements? What would you as a senior like to see in our community?

Two “Age in Place” experts will be in Morris on Oct. 1 to help answer these questions and give guidance to our community’s leaders, according to a news release from the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

The event is “Challenges of the Future: Is Grundy County a Retirement-Friendly Community?” It will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Living Water Church, 118 E. Jefferson, Morris. The event is being organized by the Community Foundation.

Guest speakers will be Dr. Lisa Hollis-Sawyer, Gerontology Program coordinator at Northeastern Illinois University, and Lucia Jones, executive director of the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

“We have a number of top-

ic- and age-specific networks in Grundy County [children, business and education, planning officials, nonprofits] but we’re missing a network of agencies who serve our county’s senior citizens, so we’ve begun convening one,” Julie Buck, executive director for the Community Foundation, said in the news release. “We first met in July. Now we’ll meet again Sept. 18 and then host this event Oct. 1 to jumpstart the brainstorming part of the network with the goal of building partnerships to identify existing resources and strategies to fill service gaps. Convening stakeholders like this helps us be strategic about our grantmaking to improve our county’s quality of life.”

The next meeting of the Grundy Senior Network is at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Grundy County Administration Center, 1320 Union St. in Morris.
