Minooka-area crash Grundy Crime Stoppers causes blocked lanes seeks new information SHAW MEDIA

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Two people were charged and a third was injured in an early morning crash Tuesday near Minooka that blocked traffic for hours.

About 5:21 a.m. Tuesday at Interstate 80 milepost 119, the driver of a semitrailer was resting while parked on the right shoulder.

Then, a driver of a three-axle box truck traveling east fell asleep and drove into the semitrailer, according to Illinois State Police District 5 Master Sgt. Wilfredo Rivera.

The semitrailer was car-

rying milk products, which spilled onto the interstate, Rivera said.

The box truck flipped on its side, blocking multiple lanes.

All lanes were closed for several hours, according to Rivera, and traffic was redirected to the left shoulder.

Partial lane closures continued until 9:05 a.m.

The driver of the semitrailer was charged with improper parking, Rivera said, and the driver of the box truck was charged with driving while fatigued and improper lane use.

The semitrailer’s co-driver was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

• A hit-and-run crash or criminal damage to property – the incident occurred between 7 p.m. Sept. 13 and 7:15 a.m. Sept. 14. The suspect left the roadway in the 900 block of West Sucker Road in rural Mazon and struck some shrub trees on the front of the property.

• Theft – the incident occurred between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in the 2500 block of South Carbon Hill Road. The suspects stole an ATV that was near the garage of a home.

Callers providing information to Crime Stoppers at 815-942-9667 will remain anonymous.

Rewards of up to $5,000 are eligible for information that leads to an arrest and filing of criminal charges on crimes occurring in Grundy County.

Ray Grossi wins 2 awards at Corn Festival art show, helps form future nonprofit center

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Ray Grossi sold his first drawings to neighbors while he was still in grade school.

He later took his talent and love for art and went on to create a sign business in Morris, where he has been hand-painting signs for years. As technology has changed the industry, he found he was doing more digital work, so he started painting more at home.

This year he entered three of his oil paintings in the Grundy County Corn Festival art show, where he took home a Best of Show ribbon for his oil painting of his dog, Spencer, and the People’s Choice Award for his painting of his two horses as viewed out the back door of his home.

“Typically we are busy at Corn Fest time and I don’t take the time to enter,” Grossi said.

“The biggest thing pushing me this year is that we are starting a not-for-profit arts center, and I figured I need to make an effort to be involved in the community and stay involved.”

Grossi, along with his wife, Rose Grossi, joined local artists Art Ashcraft, Ed Cepiel and Mark and Diana Daggett, to work on Exibit Fine Arts Center and Gallery, a nonprofit group that plans to provide space to showcase art, as well as offer learning opportunities for the public. They hope to open the gallery next spring.

“We want to provide an opportunity for people, toddlers through seniors in the community, who have an interest in learning, [and] a place to meet with other local artists and learn,” Rose said.

Ray Grossi said when he took his three oil paintings to the art show he didn’t know what to expect, but was pleased two of his recent favorites were chosen for high honors.

The piece only took four hours to paint from beginning to end – quick compared to the time he spends on many of his paintings.

The People’s Choice painting of their two horses took 12 hours and was created at the prodding of Rose.

“I was looking for something to paint and Rose said, ‘You never paint anything around the house,’ ” Ray Grossi said. “So out the back door of our house are our horses, Angel and Dance, so I sat down to paint them.”

He said he is honored that those attending the art show took the time to vote for his painting, and he thinks he understands why they chose the large painting of two horses grazing in the snowy pasture.

“Someone said it looks like a Hallmark card,” he said. “So I see why they voted for it. It’s art that people connect with.”

Suspect wanted on multiple warrants allegedly resists arrest, hides in couch

By MIKE MALLORY VERONA – A man wanted by several law enforcement agencies on charges related to alleged home repair fraud was arrested Sunday at his Verona residence.

Steven M. Ellis, 41, was wanted on multiple warrants when a neighbor called the Grundy County S h e r i f f ’ s D e - Steven M. partment to re- Ellis port a domestic disturbance between Ellis and his wife, Natania J. Jaffrey, 44, at their home.

According to the arrest report from Grundy County, officers knocked on the door and were greeted by Jaffrey, who denied Ellis was present and said she was unaware of what they were talking about, even though neighbors said they were arguing in the front yard.

While a deputy attempted to get a search warrant from the Grundy County state’s attorney, a Seneca police officer saw a man fitting Ellis’ description in the kitchen as he stood at the rear of the home.

The man exited a storm door and the officer ordered him to show his hands. The man then ran into the house and unleashed about 10 dogs as officers pursued him, causing them to retreat, the report stated.

Additional Grundy County deputies, as well as an officer from Morris police and one from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, arrived and a perimeter was set up around the house. A search of the home was conducted, as Ellis was informed he was under arrest, but did not show himself, according to the report.

Officers then told Ellis to show himself again, but he didn’t, the report stated. They picked up the couch, pulled Ellis out of it and placed him under arrest.

Later Jaffrey stated without being provoked that the two did have an argument in the front yard, according to the report. He was arrested on warrants out of Grundy, Will and Livingston counties, as well as a new charge of resisting arrest. He was booked into the Grundy County jail and given a bond of $31,225.

Jaffrey was arrested by Grundy County deputies on a charge of obstruction of justice. She was booked into the Grundy County jail. Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said deputies made daily checks at the residence to arrest Ellis on the warrants, but didn’t have authority to enter without probable cause.

Callahan said the neighbor knew Ellis was wanted and that the dogs were aggressive but small.

Restaurant hopes for March opening

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If winter weather isn’t too severe and construction goes as planned, a Buffalo Wild Wings could open in Morris just in time for the NCAA March Madness 2016 basketball tournament.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said all things, especially weather, should be taken into consideration, but contractors have told him the goal is to be open by March Madness, which begins March 15.

“March Madness is a big thing for them,” Kopczick said. “I’m hoping everything works out well and we’ll get a ribbon-cutting ceremony in.

It’s a great thing for the community.”

Developers presented plans in July to the Development Review Committee to remodel the former Aldi building at

2685 Sycamore Drive, on the same lot as Big R. The building, which has been vacant for several years, covers about 12,500 square feet, but the reconversion would downsize it to about 5,200 square feet.

The downsize will provide more green space on the property. Work will be done to the inside and outside to give the space the traditional Buffalo Wild Wings look.

To do this, the roof will have to be removed and raised 4 feet, Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said, adding that developers have received all neces-

sary permits.

As of Tuesday, concrete was being removed from areas of the parking lot, which also is being redone.

Cheshareck said contractors are hoping to get all exterior work done in about 45 days before focusing on the interior. The property is owned and being redeveloped by Net3 Real Estate, of Oak Brook, which will lease the property to Buffalo Wild Wings, Cheshareck said.

He said the nationwide chicken wing chain often uses property without outright ownership, and said March Madness is a realistic target date, assuming the restaurant is aggressive in remodeling the property.

The nearest Buffalo Wild Wings is in Shorewood.

The tall, lanky cowboy epitomized the western South Dakota rancher, Mickelson said, and Miller almost never appeared in public without his cowboy boots. A toothpick often dangled from Miller’s mouth, and when he ventured outside he completed the look with a western-style sport coat and a cowboy hat.

After attending the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Miller ran the

7,000-acre family ranch and was president of Dakota National Life Insurance Co. from 1970 to 1985.

Miller was a prominent Republican member of the state House of Representatives from 1967 through 1986, and he’s the only person in state history to serve as speaker, speaker pro tempore, majority leader, assistant majority leader and majority whip. Mickelson said the House was in good hands with Miller and Joe Barnett from Aberdeen at the helm.

“They were institutions and they ran the House,” he

said. “And it worked well.”

Attorney General Marty Jackley, a fellow Meade County native who had served as Miller’s business lawyer, described Miller as a strong, passionate leader who was honest and direct.

“He said what he meant, and meant what he said,” he said.

Miller was instrumental in Jackley’s decision to go into public service, and Jackley continued to seek Miller’s counsel when he took on the role of state attorney general for advice on how to navigate the waters of running for statewide office, meeting key players and attending Republican conventions.

“That was what his leadership quality was,” Jackley said. “He would give you advice, and then irrespective of your decision he would help you achieve that.”

When George Mickelson won the 1986 gubernatorial race, he made Miller the state’s first full-time lieutenant governor and appointed him chairman of a number of task forces. Miller at that time said he had no political ambitions and only wanted to help make the Mickelson administration a success.

Speakers will include Sasha Grabenstetter, consumer economics educator; and Katie McInerney, estate planning attorney from Hynds, Rooks, Yohnka & Bzdill. The estate planning

workshop will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at University of Illinois, Grundy County Extension office in the basement of the Farm Bureau Building, 4004 N. Division St., Morris.

By DIRK LAMMERS The Associated Press SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Former South Dakota Gov. Walter Dale Miller, who stepped in as the state’s leader in 1993 after a plane crash killed his predecessor, died Monday night. He was 89.

Miller served as the state’s 29th governor through 1995, taking the oath of office on April 20, 1993, a day after the plane carrying Gov. George Mickelson and seven others went down in eastern Iowa.

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard said Miller was a friend who assumed the governorship at a time of tragedy and sorrow.

“He provided a steady hand as our state mourned the loss of Gov. Mickelson,” Daugaard said in a statement. “Through his long career in public office, Walt worked hard and put South Dakota first.”

Mickelson’s son, state Rep. Mark Mickelson, said the 20year veteran of the legislature was a strong leader and the perfect man to take over from his father.

“Walter was a steady hand during a very difficult time,” Mickelson said Tuesday.

Frankie Ford, who sang ‘Sea Cruise,’ dies at age 76

By JANET McCONNAUGHEY The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS – Rock and roll and rhythm and blues singer Frankie Ford, whose 1959 hit “Sea Cruise” brought him international fame, is dead at the age of 76.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office says Ford died Monday of natural causes.

Mike Shepherd, head of the Louisiana music Hall of Fame, says Ford had been ill for some time.

Ford had sung since childhood.

His adopted parents, Vincent and Anna Guzzo of Gretna, brought him to New York when he was 5 to perform on the “Ted Mack Amateur Hour.”

Shepherd says Ford was among three white singers called to Cosimo Matassa’s New Orleans studio in the late 1950s to cover songs by local black musicians whose records got less airtime because of racial discrimination.

Channahon District 17 on target to pay off bond debt

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon School District 17 Board learned Monday the district has “healthy fund balances” when accountant Scott Duenser, of Klein Hall CPAs, gave the board its 2014-15 audit report.

The district is on target to pay off the remainder of its bond debt in the near future.

The bonds were used to finance Channahon Junior High School. Becoming debt free, Duenser said, “is great for you and uncommon for a district. ... It’s great for all involved.”

The board also approved adding a project to the construction of the new lunchroom at N.B. Galloway Elementary School planned for next year.

According to Superintendent Nick Henkle, the lunchroom will take up more than 50 percent of the asphalt play area at the south side of the school. The site is heavily used by students at recess, ac-

cording to Galloway Principal Mary Kelly, who said 115 to 120 children are out on the area at any given time.

Architectural renderings for the site proposed an extension of additional asphalt along the grassy area about 10 feet from the wall of the school, but some board members felt the grass should remain.

The board suggested new renderings of added asphalt a little to the south of what was proposed, with a pathway to the playground. Currently, that pathway is crushed limestone, which board member Dee Foreman said is difficult to traverse with a wheelchair.

With the remaining playground asphalt in poor shape, the board approved adding the project of repairing the existing surface drive and expanding the play area to the bids it will seek for the lunchroom addition in mid-October. The extra costs are estimated at $100,000.

The board also approved hiring Dawn McMillin as a homebound tutor at $31.02 an

hour; Kelly Davis as a cafeteria server at $9 an hour and Demitra Gobert as a substitute cafeteria worker at $8.50 an hour. Extra duty was approved for Kiley Sommers as assistant sponsor for Beta Club at a stipend of $1,026, and for Dan Nyalka as sixth-grade girls assistant basketball coach at a stipend of $2,765.

Retirement was approved for Three Rivers School secretary Kay Thompson beginning Jan. 3, 2016. The board also approved a request by the superintendent to let Thompson’s replacement begin before Thompson leaves to allow the replacement to learn the position. The board approved allowing the two secretaries to overlap by a week or two.

Board member Joan Ferguson was absent Monday. There will be a 5 p.m. work-study session before the board’s next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 26. The subject of the session will be school consolidation.

The district has been considering consolidating its four schools into three.

Fire Prevention Week starts with pancake breakfast

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Minooka Fire Protection District will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a pancake breakfast Sunday.

In addition to all-you-caneat pancakes, first- and second-grade students at Minooka Elementary School and Aux Sable Elementary School in Minooka will find out how they did on their fire escape plan. The students were given papers to design a fire escape plan for their home. During the breakfast, they will find out if they placed in the top five for each grade.

“We have three pancake breakfasts a year, this one is special because it kicks off Fire Prevention Week,” said Cindy Wilson, fire and life safety education coordinator for Minooka and Channahon fire protection districts.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4 to 10, and has the theme “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep,” promoting a smoke detector in every bedroom.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Even though the Morris boys soccer team trailed Rochelle, 1-0, at halftime Tuesday night, the Redskins had a secret weapon that the Hubs hadn’t planned for.

More specifically, the size of Lain’s shoes. The lanky junior needed every inch of his long legs and feet to reach a shot by teammate Alex Randall and kick it into the net with 5:17 remaining to break a tie at 1. Morris (6-9) held onto the lead and came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

“I was running side-byside with Alex Randall,” Lain said. “He sent in a shot, and I followed it in. I didn’t know it was going to happen that way.

I just stretched out as far as I could and got it. I guess the size 14 gets it done.”

The big shoe did indeed get it done, and the Redskins got a win very similar to an earlier victory over the Hubs.

“This was like our last game against them,” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“Except the last game, we were down 2-1 at halftime and ended up winning 3-2.

“We didn’t make a lot of adjustments in the second half.

We had plenty of chances in the first half, but nothing went in. We did have to get rid of the ball quicker and get it to someone else. We did a better job of that in the second half.”

With a strong wind at their backs, the Redskins had the ball in the Rochelle end for much of the first half. Lain had a pair of shots on goal that were saved, while Brian Haldorson and Conner Shaw each had shots that were saved as well. Rochelle scored the half’s only goal with 15:03 to play.

After halftime, the defense had to work a little harder, and they came through. Defenders Kaleb Hefford, Skyler Wills and Brian Pfaff, along with freshman Aydin Hefford, kept the Hubs at bay, and any time a shot got through, goalie Matt Borgstrom was there to make the save.

I always thought that the key stat about Zanzibar is that the whole population of the world could stand on it. However, for a bridge player, this should become: It is worth the while to count as much as you can on every deal.

The hard part, of course, is working out what’s critical to count.

South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest club two. How should East defend?

South’s two-heart rebid was a reverse, which promised a maximum opening and that his hearts were shorter than his diamonds: 17-20 points and at least 4-5 in the red suits.

East needs to count declarer’s hand distribution. West’s lead promised a four-card suit, so South is known to have started with three clubs. Ergo, South probably has 1-45-3 distribution.

This should point East in the right direction. At trick two, he should shift to the spade king, just in case declarer has a singleton queen. Since East has diamonds under control, his side should be able to win five tricks before South collects nine. Even if West has the club king-jack, that suit can wait.

With the given layout, that’s exactly how the deal works out.

Declarer ducks a couple of spades, wins the third round with dummy’s ace, and tries to run the diamonds.

When they don’t break, he has to dislodge the club king to get out for down one.

Low glycemic diets are good for your health Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally ran in June 2012.

Dear Dr. K: Diabetes runs in my family, and my mother says I should eat a “low glycemic index” diet. Can you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Carbohydrates (“carbs,” for short) are one of the main types of nutrients in food.

Common sources of carbs include bread, pasta, cereals, fruit, milk, vegetables and beans.

The carbs we eat are mostly too big for us to digest.

Carbs are long strings of a certain type of molecule.

Think of them as a string of pearls. When they hit the gut, digestive enzymes start to

As a result, the energy that is in those tiny pieces reaches every cell in our body.

Some of the carbs we eat are easy for our gut to reduce into tiny pieces. Other carbs take much longer to chop up. When carbs are easily converted into sugars, blood sugar levels rapidly rise to higher levels. When carbs are converted more slowly, blood

sugar levels rise slowly to relatively lower levels.

Carbs that are chopped up slowly are said to have a low glycemic index. Carbs that are easily digested and absorbed, and raise blood sugar levels rapidly, have a high glycemic index. Of course, we don’t eat pure carbs (except for table sugar). We eat foods that contain carbs, and some foods contain more carbs than others.

So the amount of sugar that enters our bloodstream after a meal depends both on how much carbohydrate they contain and how easily those carbs are absorbed (the glycemic index). Multiplying the amount of carbs in a food by the glycemic index of those carbs determines the “glyce-

mic load.”

For example, the glycemic index of a carrot is 131.

In comparison, a serving of mashed potatoes has a glycemic index of only 104.

However, a half-cup serving of carrots has only about 4 grams of carbohydrate.

The same quantity of mashed potatoes has more than 18 grams of carbohydrate.

That’s why the glycemic load for a serving of carrots is 11, while that of a serving of potatoes is 20.

In a study of tens of thousands of women over several decades, a research team at Harvard Medical School found that those who had low glycemic loads (mainly from eating whole grains) cut their

risk of weight gain in half.

On my website (AskDoctorK.com) there is a table that gives the glycemic index and glycemic load of common foods. You may well find that some of the foods you love have healthy glycemic loads.

Correction: Recently I wrote that the Mantoux skin test is the “only” way to diagnose an inactive TB infection. I should have said the “most common” way.

There also is a blood test, which has some advantages over the skin test. I regret the omission.
