To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

Morris. The Foxes went for the win and Kurtz swept left to score, but Yorkville was called for holding, moving the ball back 10 yards. From there, Jonathan DeVries made the kick and the score was tied with 36.9 seconds left.

Morris took over at its own 32 and Griffin Sobol (12 carries, 89 yards, 17-of-30, 175 yards passing) ran for a gain of 18 to midfield. After two incompletions, he broke free on a 40-yard run to the 10. As time ran out in regulation, a fieldgoal attempt to win the game from 30 yards out fell short.

Morris got the ball first in overtime and, on fourth down, Sobol hit Chase Hansen for a 7-yard touchdown and Luis Luna’s extra point gave Morris a 28-21 lead. Kurtz then went 10 yards for a score on Yorkville’s first play in overtime, and he ran in the conversion for the winning points.

“I can’t say enough about the fight our kids have,” said Morris coach Alan Thorson, whose team suffered its second straight one-point OT loss (28-27 last week to Sterling).

“They kept fighting all four quarters and overtime.

“You can say what you

want about the officiating, but we have to put ourselves in the position where it won’t make a difference. We did so many things well tonight.

Our offense played well and I couldn’t be happier with our defense, especially being without three starters. Their kid (Kurtz) is a good back, but we gang tackled well all night and made him fight for all his yards.”

Morris got on the board early when Jacob Webb returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.

Yorkville answered later in the first quarter on a threeyard keeper by Scott and took a 7-6 lead, which they held at halftime. The Foxes’ Henry Imbrugia scored on a 58-yard run in the third quarter, but Morris answered when Sobol hit Hansen for a 26-yard touchdown on fourth-and-10 on the ensuing drive. Sobol ran in the conversion to make it tied at 14. In the fourth quarter, Jake Walker (eight carries, 67 yards, nine catches, 97 yards) scored from two yards out with 2:44 left to give Morris a 21-14 lead and setting up the thrilling final minutes.

MORRIS – In a football season, all losses hurt. Some, however, hurt more than others.

Consider Morris’ 29-28 overtime defeat at the hands of Yorkville on Friday night as one that might hurt the Redskins the most. Not only does it put them with a 2-3 record with games against Northern Illinois Big 12 East foes DeKalb, Sycamore and Kaneland coming up, but this was a game in which Morris outplayed its opposition in all facets except the final score.

The Redskins (2-3, 0-1) held Yorkville’s Michael Kurtz, who had run for 253 and 310 yards in his past two games, to 113 rushing yards and just 31 in the second half. Meanwhile, Morris collected 183 yards on the ground and 175 through the air to amass a 358-222 advantage in total yards over the Foxes (5-0, 1-0). Morris had 15 first downs to Yorkville’s eight. The Redskins returned an interception for a touchdown and scored TDs twice on fourth-down plays. Twice, Morris pinned the Yorkville offense inside the 5 on punts.

Everything pointed toward a Redskins victory.

However, Morris led in another category. They had nine penalties for 91 yards against two for 15 for Yorkville. The timing of the last Morris penalty was the hardest to take.

With Morris leading 21-14 and Yorkville facing fourthand-8 from their own 44-yard line and 1:48 to play, the Morris defense knocked down a pass, seemingly taking over possession. The official directly in front of the play called it incomplete, but the flag came in from the back judge.

Little things make a big difference

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Bears tight end Martellus Bennett didn’t just think he got in the end zone on the final play of the first half. He knows he did.

“Yeah, I did score,” he said with certainty when asked about the pass he caught at the goal line as the final seconds elapsed in the first half and the Bears trailing the Packers, 21-17.

“I stuck the ball across the goal line – which is the first time I ever tried to do that – but the referee told me on the replay they couldn’t see it because the [Packers player] blocked [their view].”

And likewise, receiver Josh Morgan thought he had scored when he caught a short pass from Jay Cutler inside the 10 and headed for the pylon in the first quarter. After he was ruled out at the 1-yard line, the offense sputtered and the Bears settled for a field goal. If only he had tried to stick the ball over the goal line …

“I actually thought I was in the end zone,” Morgan said. “It was a misjudgment on my part. If I knew I was that close, I would have probably have tried to run [the defender] over or did more. But I was running and I thought

I had a good angle to the pylon. Even if he pushed me out, I was still running past the pylon with the ball.”

It was one of those days at Soldier Field. The Bears’ defense deserves most of the blame for a 38-17 loss to the Packers that dropped them to 2-2 on the season. But an inefficient offense against a defense that does not rank among the best in the NFL left a lot of room to wonder just how close are the Bears and Cutler are to realizing their potential.

The Bears gained 496 yards and scored 17 points against the Packers.

That’s tied for the most yards gained by the Bears in a loss since 1947. The Packers and Aaron Rodgers gave the Bears and Cutler an expensive lesson in how to get the job done. The Packers scored five touchdowns and 38 points on only 47 plays against the Bears. It’s either the difference between Mike McCarthy and Marc Trestman or Rodgers and Cutler – you make the call.

The Bears leave themselves such a small margin for error, they need fortuitous calls (like the gift Alshon Jeffery got on a deep ball against the Jets last week) and short fields (like the two Kyle Fuller gave them against the 49ers two weeks ago) to win

games. They didn’t get the calls or the takeaways against the Packers and the result was predictable.

The Cutler-to-Bennett play at the end of the half typified the Bears’ plight. After Rodgers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb for a 21-17 lead with 1:03 left in the half, Cutler hit Bennett for completions of 26 and 27 yards to drive the Bears to the Packers’ 9 with 14 seconds left.

Cutler missed Brandon Marshall on first down. With nine seconds left and four receivers running vertical routes, Cutler threw to Bennett over the middle at the goal line. Bennett’s leg broke the plane, but NFL rules stipulate the ball must do so for a touchdown.

Whether or not Bennett actually scored, it was a risky play for an offense that aspires to be as good as the Packers and Saints. “I liked the call.

I liked the throw,” Cutler said. “The defender made a heck of a play.”

That’s the problem. In a mature offense, Cutler throws to a wideopen Bennett all alone in the actual end zone, where the defender has no chance to make a heckuva play. But the Bears aren’t there yet. After this game, the question is: How long before they get there?

The Bears didn’t register a hit on Aaron Rodgers, much less record a sack, in a vintage performance by the Packers’ franchise QB, who was barely moved from his spot while throwing almost as many touchdowns (four) as incompletions (six) in a 38-17 victory Sunday at Soldier Field.

“We didn’t get the kind of pass rush we needed today,” said Trestman, whose plan to generate pressure primarily with four rushers failed. “When Aaron was in the pocket, he was able to … get done what he needed to.”

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent LISLE – With homecoming festivities prompting a move to Benedectine University, Seneca took on the Lisle on Friday night.

The Fighting Irish were able to get out to a lead on the turf when Seneca tailback Alex Thornley took a toss and got the edge on the Lisle defense, scoring from 19 yards out. An extra point by Peter Hogue gave Seneca the 7-0 lead with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter.

“We felt like we didn’t

give our best effort last week against a good Herscher team, and the kids were disappointed,” Seneca coach Ted O’Boyle said. “I thought we rebounded, and I actually thought that was probably our best offensive output of the season. So I’m proud of that effort. I thought our offensive lineman made some strides tonight and with who we have left on our schedule we’ve got to keep improving.”

However, turnovers eventually allowed Lisle to knot up the score, as Seneca fumbled twice (with Lisle also fumbling once) in a seven-play span.

The second of those fumbles gave Lisle the ball on Seneca’s 2-yard line, and on the first play of the drive, Grant Haen took the plunge for the score and tie the score.

The score remained tied at 7, as the half ended and homecoming festivities began.

When play resumed, Seneca jumped back ahead when Bryce Coyle took a handoff and found a crease and gashed the Lions for a 37-yard touchdown.

The extra point gave the Irish a 14-7 lead.

Micetich, Dibble key in Coaler rout of Indians

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SANDWICH – This summer, Coal City football fans might not have expected Jack Dibble and Nick Micetich to occupy the roles they did Friday night.

Those fans must be happy that Dibble and Micetich were the Coalers’ primary running back and quarterback, respectively, in a 49-14 romp past Sandwich.

Dibble is filling the role the Coalers coaching staff hoped he would occupy, but given his history, it was tough to know that he would be able to do so into the second half of the season. In 2012, the now-senior tore his right aACL in the fourth game of the season. He came back as a junior in 2013 and tore his left ACL on opening night.

On Friday, Dibble looked the part of a workhorse, carrying the ball 24 times for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

He did not play in the fourth quarter – but only because he was not needed in a blowout.

“It is awesome,” Dibble said. “I haven’t played a full season since my freshman year. All of the hard work and everything that I put into it to come back, it’s all 100 percent worth it. Coming off two ACLs … I can’t explain it. It makes me, I guess, cherish every mo-

ment a little bit more because I know what it’s like to be on the sideline, not being able to play.”

Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said that Dibble’s past made watching his big night all the more special.

“I could get very emotional just because of the kid, how hard he’s worked,” Onsen said. “From the first game at Reed-Custer, when he broke through for 180-something yards. … To miss two whole seasons like he has and now have some success, I mean, if I’m sitting on the Sandwich side, you gotta cheer for a kid like that.”

During the long road back, Dibble sometimes imagined himself returning to a starring role such as the one he held Friday.

“There were some days where I would get discouraged or something,” Dibble said, “and then I would just have to think, ‘I got teammates that are counting on me, and I’m counting on them, so I gotta go out and work so that we can have nights like these.’ ” Micetich’s road to having a 7-for-9, 82-yard, one-touchdown and no-interception night at Sandwich does not feature the injuries that Dibble’s does, but it is similarly unconventional. He never had played organized football before joining the Coalers’ freshman team

in 2012, and although he was made a quarterback right away, he was not the starter.

“I didn’t play much at all,” Micetich said.

When they both were sophomores in 2013, Brad Littleton was promoted to the varsity, which created an opportunity for Micetich to start under center for the sophomore team.

But the starting job for the varsity Coalers appeared to be Littleton’s at the beginning of the season. Micetich has since supplanted him, making his third start Friday night.

One of the Coalers’ biggest passing plays involved both Micetich and Littleton, with the former finding the latter in stride for a 24-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter.

It was part of a game that was easily Micetich’s best as a varsity passer.

“This game, I felt a lot more comfortable than I did the first two,” Micetich said. “[The touchdown] was an audible play, out of that formation.

To Onsen, Micetich looked like a much more composed quarterback Friday than he did in his first two starts.

“I could just see the confidence is growing,” Onsen said.

“When the game starts slowing down for them, you become a lot better football player, and I think it’s starting to work that way for him.”

to have injured his shoulder at some point in the first half. In that half of play, Coyle carried the ball 10 times for 91 yards and the aforementioned touchdown.

“I’m proud of Bryce, because we’ve thrown a lot of positions at him and we’ve asked him to be the guy that gets thrown in whenever we need him and he’s taken to that role well. Tonight he comes in and runs the ball well,” O’Boyle said.

“The line was blocking really good and our running backs were also blocking really well,” Coyle said. “I (as barely getting

touched. [On the touchdown) I had maybe one guy get one hand on me.”

Lisle managed to threaten to tie the score after a third Seneca lost fumble, but the Irish defense held strong, ultimately shutting down the Lions and holding onto their 14-7 lead.

“That was kind of how we played (defensively) the first few weeks of the season,” O’Boyle said. “We took a step backwards last week, but tonight I thought we did a great job.”

The win propelled the Irish to 4-1, while Lisle dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Saratoga pitcher Jacob Overbeck allowed only three hits in a 12-0 win over Joliet St. Ray’s that advanced the Hawks to the IESA Class 2A State Tournament in Peoria.

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – With a perfect season on the line Saturday in the IESA Class 2A Sectional against Joliet St. Ray’s, the Saratoga Middle School baseball team did what it had done all year.

The Hawks relied on pitching, defense and timely hitting, and came away with a 12-0 victory in five innings to advance to the state tournament for the second time in the past three seasons. The 2012 team also reached the state finals. This year, Saratoga (20-0) will take on Staunton at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Peoria’s Eastside Center.

Jacob Overbeck went the distance on the mound for Saratoga, striking out four and allowing just three hits.

Offensively, the Hawks were persistent, getting a run in the second inning, two in the third and one in the fourth before erupting for eight in the top of the fifth.

Patrick McCabe highlighted the big fifth with an RBI triple, while Alex Cameron, Michael Feiden and Chatten Dryfhout each had an RBI in the frame, as well. Other RBIs went to Cody Bledsoe and Ethan Heap in the third inning.

“Jacob is our horse,” Saratoga coach Matt Blaine said.

“He has been all year long. He knows if it’s a big game, he’s getting the ball. He’s getting it Friday, and we will go from there.”

Not only did Overbeck pitch well and the offense take advantage of opportunities, but the Saratoga defense, highlighted by second baseman Matt Lopez, played flawlessly. The Hawks committed no errors.

“We didn’t hit the ball all around the lot, but we got timely hitting,” Blaine said.

“We made them make plays, and we made the plays we had to make. That’s the name of the game, especially at this level.”

As a procession of horses, tractors, emergency response vehicles and public figures filed the street, members of the Morris Poms and Mueller’s School of Dance twirled and exhibited their skills and routines for the festival’s patrons.

As the parade wound down, visitors and local residents alike followed the tail of the parade, making a mass exodus of the downtown area.

Katlyn Eisenbeis and Hanna Lauterbach brought home second place for the second year in a row, and were happy to partner for the third time.

“It’s fun. I like doing it,” Lauterbach said.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Deputy Chief Bob Wills said they put on the water fights every year because they love seeing the kids have fun.

“Kids love firemen,” Wills said. “They have a ball.”

Firefighter Jake Bulthuis said 48 children participated, down a little from other years.

The Kiddie Parade lined up right after the water fights at Chapin Park, with 18 entries ready to walk and roll down Liberty Street.

“This is one of the biggest Kiddie Parades in the years I’ve been here,” Corn Festival Board Member Colleen Donahue said.

Four-year-old Mark Brookman III said he likes riding in the parade. His entry fit this year’s Corn Festival theme, “Coming Together to Help Our Neighbors,” by honoring Habitat for Humanity.

are Dr. Lisa Hollis-Sawyer, Gerontology program coordinator for Northeastern Illinois University, and Lucia Jones, executive director of the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Both speakers are experts on “Age in Place” and can help us better understand what services and amenities are needed in a community so that retirees can live a full life locally.

The mission of the Gerontology Program at Northeastern Illinois University is to contribute to the quality of life of older adults through education, research and community service.

To that end, the program seeks to train practitioners through a broad education in the histo-

ry, characteristics, and circumstances of this older population and prepare them to make a contribution to direct service, advocacy, and research.

The Agency on Aging was founded in 1974 and is a nonprofit agency dedicated to combining resources, leadership and expertise on aging in DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

The Agency on Aging works closely with the U.S. Administration on Aging, Illinois Department on Aging and many other agencies to address both the immediate and long range needs of our region’s seniors.

They are one of more than 600 such agencies throughout the country, created by Congress, to implement the Older Americans Act and coordinate a wide variety of services for persons 60 years old and older.

The mission of the Agency on Aging is to strive to make aging easier through the de-

velopment and promotion of a network of services for older persons designed to optimize the quality of their lives.

In addition to these guest speakers, members of our local Senior Network will be available to contribute to the conversation and provide local answers.

To date, senior transportation to this event has been arranged through the City of Morris. We haven’t yet secured transportation for seniors outside Morris, but we are working on it.

We invite seniors, their families, agencies, business, elected officials, our faith community, and the public in general to this event. It will be exciting to get tips from experts in order to improve our quality of life in Grundy County.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County has convened and co-convened a number of networks over the years – agencies and organizations who provide services for a particular population in our county – in order to partner for solutions.

What’s been missing is a network of agencies that provide services to our county’s seniors.

Therefore, we began convening this Senior Network in July.

The goal of this network is to assemble a list of existing services and amenities, identify gaps in services, and strategize and collaborate solutions.

But before we get too far into it, it would be nice to know what a community needs to be senior-friendly. Therefore, we are excited to invite the community to “Challenges of the Future: Is Grundy County a Retirement-Friendly Community?”

Proud great-grandmother of Kennedy and Landon Walker.

Dear sister-in-law of Leota (Merlin) Hummel of Montgomery, IL and Aletha (late Paul) Collins of Newark, IL. Several nieces, nephews and cousins, including special cousin, Ann Burgess of Morris, also survive.

Mary Pat, a retired educator, taught at Cryder School, Dresden Hill and Channahon Schools. A lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Minooka where she was an active volunteer, a former director and teacher of the RE program, CCW member as well as a member of the Minooka Womens Club. She traveled extensively in her lifetime and enjoyed playing cards-bridge, pinnochle and euchre to name a few. The Lunch Bunch was another favorite social gathering she looked forward to.

The Collins family will always remember the excellent care and compassion provided by the staff of Park Pointe and Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Mary was preceded by her parents; husband, George; brother, Thomas Berta, sister, Eleanor (Sam) Fulton, sister-in-law, Marie (Leroy) Hill; and grand nephew, Mark Fulton.

Visitation will be held at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 80 N. Garfield St. (at First St.) in Coal City on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow Thursday, October 2nd at 10:00 a.m. in the church with Rev. OPINION Rauner needs to get facts straight Just a quick note to Bruce Rauner: The next time you try to claim that Gov. Pat Quinn is “personally” under federal investigation (an allegation that, as far as anyone can tell, is not true), it’s probably best not to say it while standing next to a different governor who actually is “personally” under federal investigation.

Rauner held a relatively brief news conference last week to talk about Chicago’s violence problem with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at his side. Rauner attempted to claim that Quinn was somehow responsible for the murder of a 9-year-old boy by a convict on probation – even though it appears right now that all state laws and procedures were followed. And not mentioned, of course, is that Newark, New Jersey, has a murder rate almost twice that of Chicago, which sort of undercut Christie’s contention that Quinn had “failed” to protect Illinois’ public safety.

Rauner was then asked about the growing scandal of an alleged nursing home “bust-out” scheme, which includes the bizarrely sordid story of how the troubled company was sold off to a pathetic old man who thought he was buying computer parts and instead wound up with an empty shell corporation that ended up being responsible for about a billion dollars in wrongful death judgments.

The gubernatorial contender then attempted to turn the tables on Quinn by claiming the governor is personally under federal investigation for that 2010 anti-violence initiative. But Rauner’s campaign has

VIEWS Rich Miller repeatedly pointed to the fact that their candidate was never even deposed in the nursing home bankruptcy proceeding as “proof” that he has no responsibility. Using Rauner’s very own standard, since Quinn’s emails haven’t been directly subpoenaed by the feds he can also legitimately claim to be innocent.

And that’s when a reporter pointed out that Christie (whom Rauner referred to last week as “one of the greatest public servants in America”) is personally under federal investigation for that bridge closing scandal thing. It’s hardly the next Watergate, and appears freakishly overblown to my eyes, but a federal probe is a federal probe, I suppose, so it was a fair point.

Not all, but most Chicago reporters don’t know much about state governance, and they know even less about state budgeting. So, Rauner has been able to avoid tough questions about things like his “business reforms” that he refuses to detail, or his proposed massive spending hikes coupled with even bigger tax cuts that will produce budget holes in the billions, etc. That’s where his highly polished, tried and true talking points do him the most good – with reporters who don’t understand the details and, for the most part, don’t care anyway.

We have been looking at deals with two potential trump suits, not three.

By far the best analysis of the subject was written by Albert Morehead for his book, “Morehead on Bidding.” This was updated by Alan Truscott and your Present Author under the title “On Bidding.” It was an easy job because it was such a good book.

Sadly, it has been out of print for years, but maybe you can find a copy online.

In today’s deal, the problem is not locating the best trump fit, but landing in a game contract that can be made.

North-South have only one eight-card fit. Five diamonds, though, can be defeated if East establishes his club trick quickly.

Then the defenders will take two hearts and one club.

Reaching a 4-3-fit contract is always difficult. Here, South’s three-heart cue-bid asks North to bid three no-trump with a heart stopper. When North cannot oblige, he shows three-card spade support. (With four spades, he would have raised on the previous round.) Then South, with such strong spades, goes with the 4-3 fit, the only game that cannot be defeated.

West leads the heart three.

East takes two tricks in the suit and – best – plays a third round.

Ruffing this trick will be fatal unless the trumps are breaking 3-3. Instead, South discards a club.

If East either plays a fourth heart or shifts to the club king, declarer can win, draw trumps and claim.

She can barely care for herself, yet she must help him eat, get out of chairs – everything short of chew his food for him. I have tried telling her she deserves respite care of some kind, to no avail.

Have you any ideas how I can convince her she is literally killing herself and deserves some assistance?

Their three daughters are no help at all to them. They turn a blind eye from their parents’ situation. – RELATIVE WHO CARES IN OHIO Dear Relative: I can think of a few things you might do to help. The first would be to talk to the daughters and explain your concerns for their mother’s health – because if she doesn’t get some respite care, SHE could die before their father does. Be sure to point out that if that happens, their father’s care would become THEIR responsibility. When they realize the effect it would have on their own lives, it might motivate them to do something.

The second would be to do some research and see what options are available for part-time caregivers or senior day care centers where her husband would be safe and looked after while your sister-in-law has a few precious hours to herself. The man’s doctor could guide you.

Then have a frank talk with her and explain that for her to be as effective a caregiver as she obviously wants to be, she’s going to have to take better care of herself because the track she’s on right now could cost her her own health or even her life, and that’s no exaggeration.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Abby: I’m a 29-yearold single man who is hard of hearing. I have a steady job and plans for a good future, but I’m having trouble in the dating world.

I would love to have a special someone in my life, but I’m shy. I have a hard time talking with the girls who live in my area. I can hear people pretty well unless they mumble or talk quietly, or face away from me when they speak.

I have asked people to repeat what they say (I try not to do it often) if I missed something. They get frustrated and so do I, and then they say, “Never mind!”

I try so hard to hear people. But it seems the harder I try, the less it seems worth it to find a relationship. Any tips on dealing with impatient and non-understanding people?

– FRUSTRATED IN WISCONSIN Dear Frustrated: As people age, many of them encounter the problem you are trying to cope with now at your young age. Hearing loss is difficult because it is often subtle and can be extremely isolating for the person who has it.

My first tip would be to avoid noisy places for meeting women, if you can.

My second would be to be upfront about your hearing loss right off the bat. If a woman finds you attractive, she will find ways to accommodate the problem.

And if she doesn’t, then she wasn’t the right candidate for a relationship in the first place.

2014 Parade float winners

By GEORGE LAMBOLEY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – As the sun rose Sunday over downtown Morris, vendors and festival attendees of the Grundy County Corn Festival made last-minute adjustments and prepared for the oncoming day’s activities.

Pat Armstrong of Scooter’s Concessions, a central-Illinois vending company, prepared cotton candy on the corner of Jefferson Street in the early hours to accommodate the day’s crowds.

“It’s not too bad being out here early,” Armstrong said.

“The sun rising is a great view and the early work makes the day run much smoother.”

The 66th installment of the festival wrapped up Sunday with the parade. Residents were out early, staking their claim to sidewalk space along Liberty Street with blankets and chairs long before the 2 p.m. start of the parade.

Lori Townsend of Morris arranged several chairs along the street well before noon to ensure comfortable viewing.

“We have guests in town for the weekend and wanted to make sure the older members of the family could enjoy the parade in comfort,” Townsend said. “This has become my yearly tradition for Corn Fest.”

MORRIS – There is always plenty for kids to do at the Grundy County Corn Festival, and this year was no exception.

On Saturday, children participated in the Cracker Box Derby, Kiddie Water Fights and the Kiddie Parade. On Sunday, kids could be found pedaling with all their might in the Kiwanis Big Wheel Race.

“I just kept on going and going,” Hayden Hutchcraft said Sunday while clutching his first-place Big Wheel Race trophy. “The other guy wiped out, and I had the luck to win.”

As with most of the activities for children, the race was separated into age categories.

Hutchcraft took home first place for the 8- to 9-year-old di-

vision.

Camren Campbell took first place in the 4- to 5-year-old division, and Aiden Aldrich for the 6- to 7-year-old division.

“I had to turn around and pedal fast,” Campbell said after his win.

At the Kiddie Water Fights on Saturday morning, Morgan Mettille and Rachel Heap again took home first place.

The duo has completed as partners in the water fights for six years and believe their bright pink ponchos bring them luck, so they wear them every year. This year marked the second time they’ve taken first place. The pair also has a second place trophy at home.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The new rule prohibiting public drinking during Corn Festival resulted in just eight public drinking citations, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Monday.

The city came down on public drinking this year, announcing it would ticket those with open alcohol in public areas.

“We have to commend the bar owners, first and foremost,” Dite said. “They properly staffed their estab-

lishments and had personnel at the entrances and exits reminding people.”

Chicago Pizza Department owner Tom Hosek was among the many downtown bar owners who hired extra security for their doors.

Hosek said it appeared the new rule actually helped his business this year because more people stayed inside his bar for longer, since they could not take their drinks outside.

“It actually seemed like our north end of town – and usually we’re kind of slower – was

really good this year,” Hosek said. “I haven’t gone through all of the numbers, but to me, it seemed better.”

Hosek’s bar and most others located downtown had temporary outdoor patio areas in place for the festival. The areas were approved by the city’s Judiciary and License Committee before the festival.

Those areas worked as planned, ensuring the bars did not have over-capacity issues inside their buildings, Dite said.

“It allowed additional space so people could mingle and not

believed Friday night’s crowd was more “sparse” than usual, but added that he saw “nice crowds at many of the outdoor lots.”

The majority of feedback Sparrow received from vendors and entertainers was positive.

Two of the food trucks left before Sunday because their inventories were already depleted, he said.

“We had really beautiful weather and I haven’t heard of any problems,” Sparrow said.

“Overall, I think it was a tremendous success.”

Typically, the Morris police respond to 10 or more disturbance calls a night during Corn Festival, but this year, the department received about 10 calls throughout the entire week, Dite said.

Draw Down to benefit housing authority building

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The hot water tank in Saratoga Tower – which is on the seventh floor, directly above resident’s apartments – sprung a leak earlier this year, causing officials with the Grundy County Housing Authority to fear residents’ homes could be in danger if it worsens.

The agency had raised just over $5,400 from various fundraising efforts, before becoming the benefactor of the First Midwest Bank Draw Down Saturday night during the Grundy County Corn Festival.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea, and a great way to involve the community if raising funds for a community project,” GCHA CEO Brent Newman said.

Tickets were sold for 250 chances at the Draw Down, with each ticket allowing two guests to come and dine on pork chops and pork burgers.

The fear is if the tank starts to leak more or completely gives way, the hundreds of gallons of water it holds will flood down into the apartments below.

The leak is on the underside of the large glass-lined metal tank, which sits just inches off the floor, making it inaccessible to try to fix.

Replacement of the custom-built tank is estimated at $24,000, money the GCHA does not have.

MORRIS – With a face covered in chocolate and whipped cream, Tyler Semlar grinned from ear to ear as his family cheered Saturday at the annual Grundy County Corn Festival Pie eating contest.

This year was Semlar’s year. After placing second three years in a row, he finally took home first place.

“Flipping over the tin and shoving it in your mouth as much as you can,” is how 8-year-old Semlar said you win the contest.

“The pie tastes good,” he said.

While he’s not keen on chocolate – he said he’d much prefer vanilla or apple pie – the young eater had no problem finishing his chocolate pie for the contest.

The first place prize was $5, which Semlar said he’d probably save.

Eight-year-old Ben Holliday took fourth, but he isn’t discouraged.

“I’ll probably be back next year,” he said. “This was my first year, and chocolate pie sounded good.”

BRIEF MINOOKA – A fire caused major damage on the second floor, attic and roof of a residence in Minooka early Monday morning, according to a news release from the fire department.

At 2:28 a.m. Monday, the Minooka Fire Protection District responded to calls on a residential structure fire at 255 Switchgrass Drive, according to the news release.

The firefighters found a fire on both floors of the 2.5-story home and in the attic.

Both residents of the house were outside, but they told firefighters they were concerned

Fire strikes Minooka house

their cat still was inside the house. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 45 minutes.

Firefighters extinguished the fire on the outside of the building and in the attic. They also extinguished the fire in the interior of the second floor.

Damage estimates were not available, according to the news release. The two residences next to the house did not have any visible damage.

Fire officials still were determining the cause of the fire as of noon on Monday. Officials were not immediately available Monday for further comment.
