Rotary President John Carr said the organization is collecting men’s and women’s coats of all sizes, but is in desperate need of bigger men’s coats.

“They layer to keep warm in the winter, so they want bigger coats they can wear over other items,” Carr said.

Carr said those wishing to donate coats can drop them off

by Oct. 30 at the Morris Hospital main entrance or at the Morris Building & Loan.

Morris Rotary, along with other rotarians from Rotary International District 6450, will be part of the Chicago Standdown, a volunteer-driven effort to help homeless veterans.

The goals of the Chicago Standdown, according to its website, are “to provide a respite from the rigors of life on the street, help veterans obtain housing and establish a source of income, and stabilize medical conditions. However, just as important as these is the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution veterans have made for all of us.”

Carr said homeless veterans from throughout District 6450 are eligible for services, including those in Grundy County.

“When you drive into Chicago and you see people under bridges and along the road, 85 percent of them are Vietnam veterans, the younger ones are veterans of the last two wars,” Carr said. “There are a lot of people hurting. Somehow, the government won’t even give them a coat to stay warm.”

He said Morris Rotary has been involved for the past four years, and the experience has been humbling.

For homeless veterans in need of services, this year the Chicago Winter Standdown will be Nov. 10 at the Illinois National Guard Northwest Armory, 1551 N. Kedzie Ave., Chicago.

Services will include: lunch, flu shots, housing information/ applications, VA benefit information, review of possible discharge upgrades, Department of Human Services and Social Security information/applications, employment opportunities, legal assistance, haircuts, women’s services and winter gear.

“These men and women are taken through one at a time with an escort, they are always super grateful,” Carr said. “You’d think you gave them $1,000 in gold, when all you gave them was a used coat.

MINOOKA – It started with a summer visit just like any other.

John, Jeff and James Crawford were staying with their grandparents, Dave and Lee Ann Deahl, during summer 2010 in Minooka.

But this time, they were without their father, John Crawford, who died in 2009.

Shortly after the boys returned to their mother in Michigan, the Deahls received a phone call from Child Protective Services, telling them to pick the boys up or they would be placed in foster care.

“I said, ‘Do not put them in foster care.’ It will take five hours, but I will be there,” Lee Ann said.

Within two weeks, Lee Ann was diagnosed with throat cancer, and Dave with prostate cancer. They won both battles, and the Deahls have raised their grandsons ever since.

The adoption became official in January 2011.

Since adopting the boys, Lee Ann has attended meetings of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, a support group at the Grundy County Health Department. She said it’s been helpful as the boys have transitioned into their teen years.

“You think it’s just your kids who are crazy, but they all are,” Lee Ann said. “We sit and talk about a problem we may have and support each other.”

The group meets the first Thursday of each month during the school year. Tania Schwer, director of senior programs, said the September meeting was aimed at finding the proper direction and structure of the group going forward. It was Schwer’s first meeting leading the group.

Members were given a homework assignment to write a letter to themselves. When they meet in October, the group will look at how to respond to

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com SENECA – The Seneca Park and Recreation Board is seeking name suggestions through Oct. 5 from the public for the village’s new 15.69-acre park. The board could have thrown its own suggestions in the mix, but chose not to.

“The park belongs to the community,” park board Chairman Fran Kasten said.

“We thought we should have the community be a part of the decision-making process.”

Building the park has been a goal for several years, dating back to previous boards, because of a lack of open park space, Kasten said. There is a large demand to use sports fields at schools in the village.

When various organizations try to host an event, there is often a waiting list.

“We depend on the school facilities and have limited recreation space,” he said.

It’s also difficult to find park-worthy property in a valley, but the village was fortunate to acquire the land, Kasten said. The location of the park is at the west end of Williams Street and adjacent to Illinois Department of Natural Resources property and downtown Seneca. It’s within walking distance of Seneca Township High School.

There are plans for a baseball field, softball field and soccer field at the park, with a half-mile fitness trail around the parcel. There also would be space for a playground, a shelter with restrooms and possibly a splash pad.

Lee Ann is excited about Schwer taking over, adding that with her background in psychology, Schwer will be able to look at problems and find solutions to get a better result out of a parenting situation. The Deahl’s grandsons already have come a long way.

They’re each active in school band, with John, 14, and Jeff, 13, performing over the weekend during the Grundy County Corn Festival.

John is considering trying out for the football team next year, his sophomore year at Minooka Central High School.

His father used to coach him, and although he found it difficult to pick up the pigskin since his passing, he’s decided it’s time.

“Soccer is the backup plan,” John said. “Depends on how much I get hurt playing football.”

Born July 18, 1921, in Mazon, Haydn was the son of the late Charles and Alice (Fox) Dewey.

He married Letty May Donahue on August 28, 1943, in Morris, who preceded him in death on July 29, 1996.

Haydn farmed his entire life in rural Mazon until retiring in 1992. He loved spending time with his family, watching sports and game shows, and helping to plant gardens.

Survived are his two children, Jane (Dale) Bilsborough of Morris and Mission, TX and Charles “Chuck” (Karen) Dewey of Destin, FL; four grandchildren, Debra

Philanthropist Richard Rainwater dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT WORTH, Texas – Richard Rainwater, the son of a North Texas grocer who went on to amass a fortune as an investment manager before becoming a billionaire investor and philanthropist in his own right, has died, according to his charitable foundation.

He was 71.

A statement issued by the Rainwater Charitable Foundation said Rainwater died Sunday morning at his Fort Worth, Texas, home after a long battle with a rare neurological disease.

He had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy since 2009 and had pumped millions into a campaign to finding a cure.

Melissa Parrish, president of Rainwater Inc., also confirmed the death.

Among Rainwater’s career achievements was conducting billionaire investor Sid Bass’ acquisition of a major stake in the Walt Disney Co. and partnering with future President George W. Bush in the 1989 purchase of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

The Bass family, heirs to Texas oil wildcatter Sid Richardson’s fortune, hired the Stanford Business School graduate from Goldman Sachs to manage its investments when Rainwater was 26, the

statement said. In 1984, Richardson and Sid Bass invested $478 million in a struggling Walt Disney Co. and helped to install then-Paramount Pictures President Michael Eisner as Disney’s chief executive officer.

In 1986, when he turned 42, Rainwater went into business for himself and later helped to engineer Bush’s purchase

of the Rangers, foundation of Bush’s personal fortune.

“I was so saddened to learn that my friend Richard Rainwater died this weekend. Richard had a brilliant mind and a generous heart. He was a lot of fun, inspiring to be around, and generous and courageous to the very end,” Bush said in a statement issued by his office Sunday.

Rainwater also mentored other investors such as David Bonderman, another Bass family employee who went on to become founding partner of TPG Capital.

The firm has helped to recapitalize such businesses as Neiman Marcus department stores, Continental Airlines and Burger King.

Former Oregonian publisher dies at 93 The ASSOCIATED PRESS PORTLAND, Ore. – Fred Stickel, who turned The Oregonian into one of the country’s best regional newspapers during his long stint as its publisher, has died. The Oregonian reported the death Sunday.

The paper won five Pulitzer Prizes during Stickel’s 34-year tenure, which ended with his retirement in 2009.

He also hired the newspaper’s first African-American editor and later hired its first female editor.

“I miss him,” said Patrick Stickel, who worked under his father at the newspaper for 22 years. “I loved working for him. He was my father, my boss and my best friend.”

Stickel is survived by six children. His wife, the former Margaret Ann “Peggy” Dunne, died in 2008.

Chamber golf outing raises program funds SUBMITTED REPORT CHANNAHON – Beautiful scenery, networking and a great day for golf at Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club attracted 60 golfers to the Channahon-Minooka Chamber’s annual golf outing Sept. 16.

Proceeds from the outing will support programs and services provided by the Channahon-Minooka Chamber, a division of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the chamber’s scholarship fund and its building fund.

VIEWS Rob Oesterle About 10 days ago, the Morris football team played Sterling on Sept. 19 after the game was postponed the night before because of thunderstorms. As a result, the planned 10-year reunion of the 2005 Class 6A state championship team also was postponed.

The rain delayed the festivities, but it didn’t dampen the memories.

At halftime of the Redskins’ 38-21 win Sept. 19, George Dergo, Morris’ 2005 athletic director and coach, announced the members of the team in attendance, but not before taking time to remember two players from that squad.

“An inevitable part of life is passing away,” Dergo said.

“This becomes part of celebrating life. Our 2005 state championship team would like to recognize two of our teammates who have tragically passed away: Abe Black and Sean Valentine.”

On hand from that championship team were three of the four captains – John Dergo, Alex Perry and Dane Zumbahlen.

Also in attendance were Kyle Kerr, Sal Evola, Justin Gordon, Billy Vanderveer, Mat Housman, Sam Garber, Michael Joneson, Adam DeBoard, Alex Clemmons and Nathan Ehrman. Dergo also noted that current Morris coaches Alan Thorson, John Wodziak and Keith Anderson also were on the coaching staff in 2005.

They recognized longtime athletic trainer John Mackinson in the stands.

I was lucky enough to spend some time talking with both Perry and Zumbahlen about that season and I asked them what they remembered most.

“There were a lot of meaningful games,” Perry said.

“But the thing about that season to me is the offseason leading up to it. We had lost

That really bonded us together. The Friday nights under the lights were fun, but the times I remember most are the practices and the bus rides to and from the games.

The time we spent together as a team.”

Zumbahlen echoed Perry’s sentiments.

“You look back at one game, and you have to say JCA,” he said. “But after all this time, I remember just being together with the guys.”

Indeed, the JCA game will live long in Morris history. A game between two traditional powers, finally played on the home field of the team that was perceived as the underdog.

“I had buddies telling me in third hour of school that day that they had already put a tree stand up in the trees on the visitors side so they could see,” Zumbahlen said. “That was crazy.”

“It seemed like it started in 1999,” Perry said. “Almost every year for a while, it

seemed like we played JCA and lost a tough game. That morning, the whole town was buzzing that we finally got them at our place. I know there were people showing up two or more hours before game time, and when we came out of the locker room and there were 10,000 or so people here, we had never

experienced something like that.

“You have to remember, that JCA team had won 30 or so straight games and they had some great players. Joe Benson went on to play major-league baseball and they had other real good players, too. But halftime of that game was probably the most confident we had ever been. We knew we would get it done.

But then we had two more tough games after that and we didn’t want the win over JCA to not mean anything.

Crystal Lake South was a big 6A team that we had to play in the semis and then Normal Community in the finals. It was almost a sense of relief when it was all over.”

YORKVILLE – The Minooka 12U Rivercats stormed to the title at the Northern Illinois Reds Fall Rumble over the weekend, posting a 4-0 record.

Minooka dominated the competition, averaging 12 runs a game, while the deep, eight-man pitching staff surrendered just two runs per contest.

Ivan Dahlberg was the leading hitter for the Rivercats throughout the tournament, delivering a .730 batting average with six RBIs and one shutout inning pitched.

Other top performers were Ryan Norman (.670, 6 RBIs, 5 shutout innings), Logan Crowther (.670, 2 RBIs, 4 shutout innings), Frankie Hummel (.670, 2 RBIs), Zac Monnett (.560, 3 RBIs), Tommy Kuhel (.500, 2 RBIs) and Dalton Reibel (.440, 6 RBIs).

In the championship game Sunday, Minooka pounded the Woodstock Avalanche, 15-0,

exploding for 10 runs in the top of the first inning. Dahlberg went 3 for 3 with a double and a triple, while Monnett had two hits and scored three runs.

Norman had two hits, four RBIs and scored three times, while Crowther had a double and a triple. Kuhel had two hits and Reibel had a double and two RBIs. Crowther and Ethan Hocking combined for a no-hitter on the mound.

In pool play, Seneca tied with Tinley Park, 17-21, 21-10; lost to Momence, 21-17, 21-19; and lost to eventual tourney champion Grant Park, 21-11, 21-4.

Yesterday, we looked at the Deschapelles Coup. Here is its cousin.

South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest spade. What happens after that?

North opened with a weak two-bid. South used the artificial two-no-trump inquiry and learned that his partner had a maximum with a feature (usually the ace or king) in hearts.

In no-trump, one typically returns partner’s lead as quickly as possible.

Here, though, if East wins with his spade ace and plays a second spade, South takes the trick, drives out the diamond ace, and has nine winners: two spades, one heart, five diamonds and one club.

East must get the heart ace off the board so that declarer cannot establish and run the diamonds. At trick two, East must shift to the heart king.

South wins with dummy’s ace and plays on diamonds. East just holds up his ace for two rounds. (West’s two is surely a singleton; with a doubleton, he would play high-low.) Then South has no resource.

This is called a Merrimac Coup, named after the American steamship Merrimac, which was sunk in the entrance to Santiago de Cuba harbor in 1898 during the Spanish-American War in an attempt to bottle up the Spanish fleet.

Finally, note that the coup works even if West had started with kingjack-fifth of spades.

All bills of claims against the County must be filed at least seven (7) days prior to the meeting to insure notice of the Board at the meeting.
