WIB brings pro women together MORRIS – The Grundy County Chamber’s Women In Business program is approaching two years this winter and a look back shows that we have featured presentations from networking techniques to fighting the pay gap between professional men and women.

The WIB group is a cohesive, strong group of professional business women. It is open to anyone looking to connect with other women, network their business or just need a place to have a couple of hours of “me time” each month. Last week, about 15 women in business met for a more relaxed program where our professional women got to do a lighthearted, fun project for this month’s event.

The ladies of the Grundy County Historical Society’s Festival of Trees walked us through making our own fall wreaths and centerpieces as a social activity for the group.

Sue Cunnea, Sandi Dransfeldt, Jan Hibler, Jo Ellyn Johnson and Karen Zelko of the Festival of Trees were patient teachers as they assisted us in tying ribbons and encouraging our creativity.

In addition to the wreath-making lesson, the participants were able to get an up-close view of the Histor-

COMMUNITY PULSE Christina Van Yperen ical Society’s museum and a chance to learn more about the upcoming Festival of Trees, which is a fundraiser for the Historical Society where beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces are auctioned off. The Festival of Trees will be held during Morris’ annual Home for the Holidays events starting the day after Thanksgiving. The trees can be viewed at the museum, 510 Illinois Ave. in Morris.

Our next WIB event is in conjunction with the Morris-Herald News’ Women of Distinction awards luncheon on Oct. 7. WIB is proud to be celebrating this year’s three winners – Lori Cora, Sandi Dransfeldt and Janine Petric.

Attendees enjoy 67th annual Corn Festival parade Sunday in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The 67th annual Grundy County Corn Festival ended in its typical grand fashion by “Putting on the Ritz” on Sunday afternoon with more than 125 entries taking a long-traveled journey through town to the delight of paradegoers.

“The parade is the best part [of Corn Festival],” said Kenzie Alonzo, 7, while watching a marching band go by. “The cheerleaders are the best part.”

The parade started out with local police and veterans spanning several decades of service.

They were followed by local Boy Scouts carrying an American flag.

The crowd clapped as they passed.

“I love seeing both young and old showing their patriotic spirit,” parade attendee Ellen Olson said.

Up the street came twirling flags and school bands playing catchy tunes, while kids lining Washington and Liberty streets danced to the music.

“We have over 125 entries this year, and it’s truly been a great turnout,” said John Sparrow, president of the Corn Festival board, while watching the entries line up. “I’ve not heard any complaints.”

There were four girls on the court but one was unable to attend the parade.

Parade participants waved from their floats decorated for this year’s theme of “Putting on the Ritz” with gold beads and headbands as well as bow ties and sparkly hats.

While candy can’t be thrown during the Corn Festival parade for safety reasons, that didn’t keep kids and some

Residents buy meals for Grundy responders

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Police throughout Grundy County and personnel with the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District were invited to dinner Friday night as a way to say “Thank you.”

“Are they a group of people who protect our lives? Do they risk their lives? We could give them dinner 50 times a year and it still wouldn’t be enough thanks,” Grundy County Housing Authority Board President John Hanson said Friday night as he scooped beans onto plates for fire district personnel grabbing a quick dinner during their shift.

At the authority’s pork chop dinner fundraiser held Friday night during the Grundy County Corn Festival at the First Midwest Bank farm tent there was a free dinner available for any police officer and his or her guest.

Housing Authority CEO Brent Newman said the community rallied around its

“Chops for Cops” promotion and donated money to purchase the meal for police working in Morris, Coal City, Minooka and for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.

One community member who purchased meals even offered to deliver them to officers who were working and couldn’t make it to the dinner.

“As a housing authority, they keep our residents safe.

As a community, they help keep all of us safe,” Newman said.

The Resident Council at the Housing Authority, which represents the residents at Saratoga Tower, wanted to help, too, and decided to pay for fire district personnel working during the Corn Festival to attend the dinner for free.

“The council said it is important to recognize the firefighters as well as the officers,” Newman said.

Fire Capt. Jeff Wilson, who was enjoying a meal under the tent, said the thanks from the residents was unexpected.

AKC dog show coming to Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Participants from as far away as California, Washington and even other countries will be in Morris on Oct. 3 and 4 to showcase their dogs in the 2015 Stone City Kennel Club Dog Show.

The Grundy County Fairgrounds is once again the host of an American Kennel Club conformation show, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Show Chairperson Patty Volz said the Stone City Kennel Club has been active for more than 60 years and the show itself has been in Morris several times.

“It’s a big deal to have it in Grundy County,” Volz said.

“We hope to attract the people of Morris and surrounding areas.”

Staff often set up shop in a block of rooms at a nearby Morris hotel. Volz said she’s fond of Morris and looks forward to bringing the show to town each year.

More than 500 dogs are registered for each day of the show. Registration has closed for 2015, but those who made the deadline will compete for Best in Show, Groups and Junior Sportsmanship categories, where young up-and-coming handlers can show off their dogs.

“This is a perfect event where members of the community, and especially families, can go to enjoy seeing many

different breeds of dogs,” Stone City Kennel Club member Eve Zurawski said.

Some competing dogs are finished champions, hoping to collect points to go to the Westminster Dog Show, Volz said.

Stone City Kennel Club also is sponsoring AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day by offering helpful information about owning and caring for your pet. The club is a 501(c)(7) nonprofit looking to promote dogs and responsible dog ownership, Volz said.

Blackbird’s Bowl, a natural and holistic pet food store in downtown Morris, will be showcasing delicious all-natural pet treats, Zurawski said, along with other vendors. A certified S.M.A.R.T. (Scissor Mechanics And Related Trades) sharpener will be on hand both days. Attendees can get scissors and clipper blades sharpened while they shop, eat and enjoy the show, Volz said.

Zurawski said the show will have a huge raffle each day that will include great products for dogs and a wireless printer.

Admission to the show itself is free but parking at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, 8890 N IL Route 47, Morris, is $5 each day.

For those who didn’t get enough of the Corn Festival fun this week, there were several events to go to before the parade.

The Corn, Grain and Flower Show, along with the Hobby and Handicraft Exhibit, was open to the public at 11 a.m at the First Presbyterian Church, and the Photography Show was open from noon to 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Cindy Fahlstrom and her grandson Cody, 10, were checking out this year’s winners at the photo show, hosted by the Morris Camera Club.

She said her grandson won last year, but didn’t enter this year. However, they still

wanted to come see the photographs.

“My favorite things at Corn Festival are the rides, I like them, and I like the food,” Cody said. “Sweet corn is the best, I can always eat corn.”

He said his favorite thing in the parade is the little cars driven by the Shriners.

On Liberty and Washington streets, those who got to their seats early had their choice of entertainment as dancers from Pam’s Academy of Dance, Donna Mueller’s School of Dance, TNT Dance Studio and the Broadway Dance Center performed in costume.

“We’ve had another awesome year with beautiful weather,” said Jim Maskel, Corn Festival board member. “Tradition is what keeps bringing everyone out year after year.”

Sheri Goldhirsch, playwright mentor, dies

The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The founder and president of the left-leaning Constitutional Accountability Center, Doug Kendall, has died at the age of 51.

The Washington-based think tank and public interest law firm says in a statement that Kendall died Saturday after a bout with colon cancer.

Kendall founded the center in 2008 to provide a counterweight to conservative inter-

pretations of the Constitution and the history behind it. He argued that the Constitution was a progressive document.

Kendall was a New Jersey native who earned undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia.

He was an associate at the law firm of Crowell and Moring before doing public interest work at the National Environmental Trust.

Kendall is survived by his wife and daughter.

The Coal City football team showed that balance Friday night in a 36-14 win over Sandwich.

When the Coalers needed to grind it out and keep the clock running, the running game was called upon and did its job.

Joe Starkey led the charge on the ground with 113 yards as the Coalers finished with 177 rushing yards.

Meanwhile, when the team needed to pick up yards in chunks, the passing game came through, with Nick Micetich being on target all night.

He completed 11 of 16 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once, but not because he threw a bad pass. That ball went off his receiver’s hands and bounced to a Sandwich defender.

So far this season, the Coalers’ main target in the passing game has been receiver Brad Littleton, who is

On Coal City’s first drive, Micetich hit A.J. Miller with a short pass, and he turned it into a seven-yard gain that set up the first of Starkey’s two

touchdown runs. On the next Coaler scoring drive, Miller caught a pass in the flat for an 11-yard gain that helped pave the way for a 23-yard score from Micetich to Cal Smolik.

Later, in the second quarter, Miller had a 10-yard reception on 2nd-and-9 for a first down before Micetich finally called on Littleton. On 3rd-and-13,

Littleton went deep and Micetich put it up for him. Littleton caught the ball in stride and outran the defense for a 48yard touchdown.

MIcetich completed 11 passes to five receivers, which included Christian Johnson and Dillon Seijka in the performance.

“It was a good night to throw,” Micetich said about his accurate performance.

“There was no wind. We were able to get a lot of guys involved tonight, and that helped out. A.J. Miller and Brad Littleton had great nights, and Joe Starkey did a great job of running the ball. The offensive

line played great, too.”

Late in the third quarter, Micetich took matters into his own hands to help a drive along. On 3rd-and-11, he faked a pitch to Starkey and ran a bootleg around the right side, turning the corner and running for a 30-yard gain that set up the Coalers’ final score.

“Nick had a great game,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said. “We were able to get the short passing game going, and that helped by keeping the defense honest. They had to respect that we may throw short, and that helped Brad get deep.”

Meanwhile, the Coal City defense was busy bottling up the Sandwich offense. Aside from a 76-yard run by Zac Dabbert, Sandwich only managed 75 rushing yards, and Alec Leasure gave the Coalers a safety when he sacked Justin Sartori in the end zone.

“The defense gave us some chances,” Onsen said. “I was interested to see how we would react after last week [a 56-13 loss to Plano]. We did some good things, but we still have some work to do.”

Seneca offense still looking for right mix after loss to Lisle

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – The first play of Seneca’s first full game without Arik Applebee as its starting quarterback in 2015 was a success, to say the least.

With Applebee on crutches on the sideline after suffering a season-ending injury during a Week 4 loss to Herscher, the Fighting Irish took over at their 9 after forcing a Lisle punt Friday night. Sophomore Hunter Greve took the snap and handed the ball to running back Casey Pifer.

Instead of running, Pifer threw the ball toward Mason Mitchell, who was wide open near the right sideline. Mitchell made the catch and beat the defense down the field for a 91-yard touchdown.

“That’s something we worked on all week. We planned on running that

play,” Seneca head coach and offensive play-caller Ted O’Boyle said. “It wasn’t real pretty or executed real well, but the outcome was good. I thought our guys needed kind of a jolt. I hoped we’d kind of ride that from there, but when you come out and lay an egg in the second half, that’s disappointing.”

Highlight-type plays were rare after that for the Seneca offense. As the game wore on, simply moving the chains became a challenge.

The only Irish first down in the second half came on a 7-yard Colt Aldrich run when both teams had pulled many of their starters in what ended up being a 44-14 Lisle win.

After averaging nearly 9.8 yards per play in the first half – a total skewed by the big opening play, but an impressive total nonetheless – the Irish (2-3, 1-2) averaged 1.6

“Right now, we gotta figure out how to continuously be able to move the ball on people and grind out some first downs,” O’Boyle said.

Greve had a solid, if unspectacular first half throwing the ball, completing two of his four attempts for 25 yards. His first attempt of the third quarter was intercepted, however, for the first of three picks made by the Lisle (3-2, 2-1) defense.

Midway through the third quarter, the Irish abandoned the wishbone look it used until then, with Greve under center and Bryce Coyle, Pifer and Hunter Simon in the backfield. Coyle moved from fullback to quarterback in a shotgun-spread look, which is something O’Boyle said had been prepared for leading up to the game.

Schematically, the offense

resembled that of the 2013 Irish, who would alternate between wishbone groupings with Zach Russell at quarterback and Bo Taylor as a running back and spread setups with Taylor taking the shot-

gun snaps. Unfortunately for the Irish, the results are nowhere near what they were in 2013’s 9-3 season.

“It’s about trying to find something that clicks for us,” O’Boyle said.

Lockett’s return for score starts poor second half

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com SEATTLE – In Week 1, the Packers followed up a 46-yard kickoff return to go 59 yards in six plays for the go-ahead touchdown.

In Week 2, coming off Jay Cutler’s injury, the Cardinals picked off Jimmy Clausen and then got a touchdown pass on a flea flicker to go up 15 and put the game away.

On Sunday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, it was Tyler Lockett’s 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that changed the tide for the Bears, helping send them to their first 0-3 start since 2003 and first shutout loss since 2002.

The theme in the locker room after the 26-0 loss was an inability to put together two good halves of football, and it has wiped away any positives the Bears have built before halftime – they’ve been outscored 61-13 in the second half through three games.

“We come out and the opening kickoff, I don’t know how far it was, but I know the guy wasn’t touched. The ball was put where it needed to,” John Fox said. “… I wasn’t really a great way to start the second half. Then we just

couldn’t generate anything.”

Fox said he tells his players to “keep swinging” and that it’s only seven points, and while the Bears may have had that mentality, it didn’t reflect on the scoreboard.

“It’s always discouraging when you give up a play on special teams, but that doesn’t define us. Even though they got that play on special teams, we still had two more quarters to go,” said Jarvis Jenkins, who had two sacks in the loss. “We could’ve stopped the run a little better.

They got their run going and opened up their play action, opened up their quick passes.

That was the main thing from the first half to second half.”

On defense, the Bears had a sound plan up front, holding Seattle to 38 yards rushing and six points in the first half.

Then came news that Marshawn Lynch was out of the game with a hamstring injury, yet the entire defense gave up 98 rushing yards to Thomas Rawls.

The offense managed one first down in the second half and didn’t get past midfield.

“It was tough,” Matt Slauson said of the return score, “but one of the things that we’re really talking about

Jake Arrieta is giving manager Joe Maddon a lot to think about.

No, those thoughts aren’t bad or negative. Arrieta’s had a season to remember and been one of baseball’s best pitchers and could be on his way to one of the top years in Cubs history. But that success has produced a couple dilemmas for a team about to enter the postseason.

With a week left in the regular season, Maddon’s task is figuring out how to keep Arrieta rolling into the playoffs but making sure he’s rested and ready for the Oct. 7 wild-card game likely against the Pittsburgh Pirates. There’s also the matter of the National League Cy Young Award, which Arrieta hasn’t locked up despite entering Sunday with a 20-6 record, 1.88 earned-run average and a host of other numbers that would make his case.

Arrieta entered Sunday’s game having thrown 216 innings, which was by far his career high. For the Cubs to get as far as they’d like in the playoffs, they’ll need him to stay sharp and powerful through October despite getting into uncharted territory of usage.

Pulling Arrieta early, however, could lessen his chances to rack up more numbers.

Despite a season that includes his no-hitter against the Dodgers and a second half among

“We have a lot of talent, we have a lot of ability. We’re playing physical, we’re playing hard. It’s just execution falls apart. We just need to do a better job finishing.”

Arrieta’s greatness has given the Cubs reason to use him as much as they can. On Tuesday, Arrieta threw 123 pitches on his way to shutting out the Brewers for his 20th victory while getting the chance to finish the night, something he relished.

Entering Sunday, Arrieta had thrown at least 100 pitches in every start since tossing only 97 July 30 against Milwaukee. That workload is something that Arrieta hasn’t shied away from, but it’s also something the Cubs will watch as they wind down the season.

Because as well as Arrieta’s pitched, his most important throws are still coming up.

Maddon, who confirmed Arrieta wouldn’t throw 125 pitches Sunday, doesn’t want to mess with Arrieta’s head by giving him a concrete limit.

Public policy meets with private pain Sometimes, it’s easy to forget public policy can collide with private pain. I saw that pain recently while chatting with state Sen. Kyle McCarter.

McCarter, a Republican from downstate Lebanon, was one of only 11 senators who opposed a $60 million plan to provide taxpayer-funded treatment to heroin addicts. What makes his situation unusual is he lost his 21-year-old daughter to a heroin overdose.

“My daughter, Amber, was absolutely beautiful and so smart and so headstrong. I can’t imagine where she got that last trait. But it wasn’t from her mother,” he said with sad smile.

Amber, who became involved with drugs as a teenager, was found dead in 2006 along railroad tracks in Brooklyn, a hard-luck village near East St. Louis.

His daughter had just left drug rehabilitation.

“She had been off drugs for 45 days and she was doing great and then for some reason decided to use again. The dose of heroin she used was mixed with fentanyl, and her body just couldn’t take it,” McCarter said as tears welled in his eyes.

McCarter is a man who cares about the addicted.

He and his wife open their home to recovering addicts and others facing serious challenges as part of their support of Mercy Ministries, a faithbased recovery program.

Not only does he provide a home, but he also offers job opportunities in his business for those in recovery. From a strictly political point of view, it’s hard to discern why McCarter would vote the way he did.

Drug treatment programs are popular with voters, and even the harshest opponent would be hard-pressed to criticize the father of a child who died of a heroin overdose for

But McCarter voted just the opposite.

“I voted against the program because the state is broke and doesn’t have $60 million for a new program.

But, more importantly, I don’t think these government-sponsored programs work.”

More than 90 percent of heroin addicts who go through rehabilitation use again.

“Some people voted for this because they wanted to show they care. But you can’t just throw money at a problem and expect it to be solved. We all care. Young people need to know they are loved, they are valued, and they are important to God. And they need to hear it from their peers,” he said.

“And that needs to be shared in the way they communicate – social media.”

McCarter believes the solution to the heroin epidemic lies with peer-based preventative programs and faith-based treatment. And when it comes to helping addicts, McCarter said the solution lies outside of government with individuals and religious institutions providing funding for treatment.

He wishes such a program had been available for his daughter.

While one may debate the most effective way to treat heroin addiction, it’s impossible to question the sincerity of McCarter’s beliefs.

We have several coups in bridge.

Let’s start this week’s columns with two defensive coups.

How can East-West defeat South’s contract of three no-trump after West leads the heart jack, and the defenders take the first three tricks in the suit ending in the East hand?

North should have opened two notrump. He should have given himself an extra point for his good five-card diamond suit and credit for all of those aces and kings. Then this contract would have been played from the preferable – and making – side.

West is known to have two heart winners, but how can East get West on lead?

West needs one other honor card, and the only useful one is the spade king. If he does have that card, how does it become an entry?

At trick four, East must lead the spade queen.

If declarer ducks, East plays another spade. Or, if South takes the queen with dummy’s ace, cashes his clubs, and takes the diamond finesse, East wins and leads another spade.

You will have noticed that East’s leading a low spade at trick four is not good enough.

This play of leading an unsupported honor to create an entry in partner’s hand is called the Deschapelles Coup, after Alexandre Louis Honore Lebreton Deschapelles, who was born in 1780 and died in 1847.

Regular eye examinations can catch glaucoma early Dear Dr. K: My mother has open-angle glaucoma. This increases my risk for glaucoma.

Can I do anything to reduce that risk?

Dear Reader: You’re right to think that your risk is increased. Because your mother has the condition, your chance of getting it is at least double that of most people you know. That doesn’t mean you definitely will get glaucoma; it just means you inherit a risk, and therefore need to be particularly careful.

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve. The optic nerve relays visual information from the eye to the brain.

In order to see, we need all

Normally, a liquid called aqueous humor fills the front part of the eye. From there, the liquid passes through a sieve-like system of tissues and drains out of the eye to be absorbed into surrounding blood vessels. As more aqueous humor is produced, excess fluid is eliminated. This keeps a healthy balance of pressure in the eye. (I’ve put an illustration of this process

on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

In glaucoma, the drainage system breaks down, slowing or blocking fluid flowing out of the eye. The fluid backs up in the eye and internal pressure rises. This, in turn, stresses the optic nerve.

If the pressure continues, nerve fibers begin to die and vision starts to fade. The pressure also can slow the flow of blood through tiny blood vessels that feed the retina and optic nerve. This can cause further vision loss.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma. In it, the angle through which fluid drains from the eye remains open, but the aqueous humor

drains out too slowly. This leads to fluid backup and rising pressure.

There is no way to prevent glaucoma, and early glaucoma typically causes no noticeable symptoms. But comprehensive eye exams can catch glaucoma early. This provides an opportunity to begin treatment before it causes irreversible vision loss that can lead to blindness.

Anyone at high risk for glaucoma – as you are because of your family history – should have regular eye exams. That means every one to three years between the ages of 40 and 54; every one to two years between the ages of 55 and 64; and every six to 12 months from age 65 onward.

Drugs to lower pressure in the eye are the main treatment. If medication is not effective, your eye doctor may recommend laser treatment or eye surgery to improve the eye’s natural drainage or to create a new route for fluid to drain.

Once you have glaucoma, your best bet for preventing vision loss is taking medications as directed.

Even if a person’s eye pressure is still in the normal range, further lowering it can prevent optic nerve damage from getting worse.
