JOLIET – Joliet Junior College is seeking nominations from the community for its annual J.D. Ross Extraordinary Service Award.

Established 10 years ago by the JJC Board of Trustees in honor of President Emeritus J.D. Ross, the award recognizes outstanding community service performed in Illinois Community College District 525 in the areas of humanitarian service, distinguished public service, scholarly service, and/or creative attainment, according to a news release from JJC. The ESA is the highest award bestowed by JJC. In 1975, JJC began honoring community members with the Distinguished Service Award to recognize individuals for their volunteerism and service to the district. In 2004, the award was renamed the J.D. Lucille Pelton 100 Years Young

Seneca ’80s reunion to be held SENECA – An all-’80s reunion has been planned for the weekend of Oct. 3 by a committee of Seneca High School alumni for classes from 1980-89.

Activities will begin with the Seneca Homecoming football game Friday and continue through Saturday night, with an ice breaker, options for a golf outing, bean bag tournament or school tour, afternoon social event and culminating with a hog roast and live entertainment.

Raymond Marshall Taylor and Ila Maxine Taylor of South Pasadena, Florida celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 10, 2014. A family dinner was held at Bern’s Steak House in Tampa, Florida.

Raymond Marshall Taylor and the former Ila Maxine Ryder, were united in marriage on September 10, 1949, at Immaculate Conception Parish in Morris. After they were united in marriage, Raymond was accepted to the University of Illinois and the couple moved to Champaign, Illinois, where Ila worked at the phone company. Raymond was employed with the American Lung Association and retired from the Gulf Coast Lung Association in July 1992. Ila, a native of Morris, was a homemaker.

Raymond and Ila live at Harbourside Condominiums, where they are active in the community. Ila enjoys water aerobics and exercise classes and Raymond serves as vice president of his condominium association. The couple enjoys traveling, especially cruises as of late.

Get involved politically Election season began Tuesday.

Not for the upcoming November election, though you should be paying close attention to that one, too. County offices are on that ballot, as are statewide and congressional seats.

But for this editorial’s purposes, we’re talking about the April 2015 election.

Candidates for all local governmental bodies, as of Tuesday, could begin collecting signatures for candidacy in the April 2015 election.

These are offices like school board, city or village boards and township offices. These are the elections you need to pay attention to the most. They matter more than any state or national election.

Better yet, if you feel like you can do more, run for a local office.

Don’t believe us on the importance of these April elections? School districts get the largest share of your property taxes; you should care who sits on your district’s board. City and village councils control the budgets for the fire, police and public works departments that provide vital services. People tend to have more interest in voting in presidential elections, but the fact is, local offices have the potential to affect your life more than a president ever could.

Generally, those who run for a position must be a registered voter in the municipality and have been a resident of the area for at least a year. For information on the election process, visit www.elections.il.gov or check with the local governmental unit.

People can file their completed petitions from Dec. 15 until Dec. 22, which is the official deadline for all local offices. Those are important dates because elected races need competition to raise awareness of local issues. The dearth of interested participants in civic activities is troubling, and it needs to change.

April’s election is as good as any to start. Participate. Get involved.

Stay interested. Your community deserves it.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Gov. Walker’s race crucial for GOP Of course it’s important which party controls the House and Senate. But for Republicans concerned about the party’s 2016 presidential prospects, one key race this November isn’t for control of Capitol Hill. It is, somewhat improbably, the fight for governor of Wisconsin.

Democrats have been gunning for incumbent Gov. Scott Walker since he and the Republican-controlled state legislature passed Act 10 – a measure curbing the collective bargaining powers of some public workers – forcing them to contribute more for their health care and pensions, and ending the automatic collection of union dues.

It’s hard to remember the incredible intensity that surrounded passage of Act 10 three years ago. Democratic lawmakers fled the state rather than allow a vote on it. Protesters took over the state capitol. There was an ugly Supreme Court fight.

But it became the law.

In the years since, Act 10 has been good for the state

VIEWS Byron York budget. The measure has saved the state somewhere between $2 billion and $3 billion, mostly in pension costs.

On the other hand, Act 10 has been bad for public-sector unions. “We’ve lost 70 percent of our membership in the state,” Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, told The Washington Post recently. Teachers’ unions also have been hit hard.

The rhetoric around the Wisconsin campaign reflects its intensity. During a visit to Milwaukee earlier this month, Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said: “Scott Walker has given women the back of his hand. ... What Republican tea party extremists like Scott Walker are doing is they are grabbing us by the hair and pulling us back.”

Apart from politics – or rather, in a different arena of politics — Walker has been the target of two investigations by state prosecutors who seem determined to bring him down.

So Walker has a lot of fights on a lot of fronts. But the biggest by far is re-election.

The race is important to the national GOP for two reasons. One is that a Walker victory would validate and solidify Act 10, while a loss would undermine it. The second reason is that Walker might well be a contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination – but only if he wins re-election first.

Walker already is admired in GOP circles for his stand against the unions.

A victory could further strengthen his appeal in early-voting Iowa. “If Scott Walker, for a third time, puts up a GOP victory in a blue state, it will be a selling point that would be difficult for other candidates to match,” says David Kochel, a veteran Iowa Republican

strategist.

While not exactly a secret, the race hasn’t gotten the attention of some of the big Senate showdowns. “The race may be flying under the radar because folks assumed Walker would be re-elected, given his success in the recall,” said Charlie Sykes, a local radio host. But Sykes reminds us that President Obama won Wisconsin twice, and the governor still faces “the persistence of Walker Derangement Syndrome and the commitment of national unions to take him out.”

Polls show the race essentially tied. A recent Marquette University survey showed Walker ahead by three percentage points among likely voters, which is within the poll’s margin of error. Republicans are right to be nervous.

Of course, despite all he has faced, Walker has prevailed before. The GOP needs him to do it again.

The Redskins welcomed back captain Jake Walker, who sat out last week with an ankle injury. Walker ran just twice for 10 yards, but caught six passes for 59 yards.

Morris received the second-half kickoff, and punted after three downs. Yorkville

took over on its own 42 and Henry Imburgia took a counter handoff and burst 58 yards for a touchdown. DeVries’ kick made it, 14-6.

The Redskins took over on their own 20-yard line and got a 52-yard run by Walker to reach the Yorkville 26. Morris faced fourth-and-10, and Sobol con-

nected with Chase Hansen for a 26-yard touchdown, with the 5-foot-10, 210-pound tight end bulling over a Yorkville defender at the goal line. Griffin Sobol ran in the conversion, and the game was tied at 22 with 22 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

Morris kept Yorkville pinned in its own end for the

rest of the third quarter, and took over at its own 46 with 1:05 left in the third quarter.

The Redskins faced third-and-9 when the quarter ended and, on the first play of the fourth, Sobol’s pass to brother Keagan was incomplete, forcing a punt.

COAL CITY 49, SANDWICH 14

Despite a few rough spots, Coalers up big on Sandwich

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SANDWICH – The Coal City Coalers faced a few more tough spots than might be expected of a team that beat Sandwich, 49-14, Friday night.

But although previously winless Indians occasionally made it difficult on the Coalers, stopping them was another story. Each of the Coalers’ four first-half drives produced touchdowns.

Coal City, which entered 3-1 overall, found itself in ap-

parent trouble right off the bat when a fumble on the opening kickoff forced the Coalers to start at the 2-yard line. They piled up five first downs, with a 38-yard Parker Czaja run to the Sandwich 12-yard line, the biggest play, to set up a 12-yard Jack Dibble touchdown run.

Dibble went off tackle left, bounced wide of the defensive end and coasted into the end zone. The drive covered 98 yards and spanned 10 plays.

After a Sandwich threeand-out, the Coalers got into a third-and-19 situation on their

second drive, only to have Dibble break off a 24-yard run for a first down.

They ran into another thirdand-long later in the drive, but Nick Micetich hit Brad Littleton in stride in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown.

Sandwich picked up two first downs on its next series, only to turn the ball over on downs when a second straight fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

A 27-yard pass from Micetich to a wide-open D.J. Budde and a Micetich sneak for

a fourth-down conversion highlighted the third Coal City drive, which produced a 13-yard Brad Churnovic touchdown run.

Coal City’s fourth drive was set up by a Junior Arias interception of Sandwich quarterback Kyle Rogers. Czaja capped it with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:03 left in the first half.

Sandwich finally made a stop on the Coalers’ first series of the third quarter. Coal City gained two first downs before Micetich came up short on fourth down.

Sandwich went backward on its next drive, and Dibble broke off a 53-yard touchdown run on Coal City’s very next play.

A 55-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Dabbert to Zac Dabbert got Sandwich on the board on the next series.

MORRIS – It didnt take long for the Morris defense to make a statement Friday night.

On Yorkville’s second play from scrimmage, Redskins defensive back Jacob Webb read the play perfectly and jumped in front of Foxes receiver Tynan Leachman to snare a pass from Nathan Scott and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. Morris owned a 6-0 lead as the extra point kick sailed wide.

For most of the rest of the first half, Morris held Yorkville tailback Michael Kurtz in check after he ran for 310 yards against Kaneland last week.

Kurtz did gain 82 yards on 15 carries, but the Foxes were only able to sustain one drive. Unfortunately for Morris, it found the end zone as Scott snuck in from three yards out and Jonathan DeVries’ extra point kick gave the Foxes a 7-6 lead with 3:52 to play in the first quarter.

Morris fell to Yorkville in overtime, 29-28.

The second quarter was scoreless, as Morris was able to move the ball through the air enough to notch a few first downs and keep the ball out of Yorkville’s hands. Griffin Sobol finished the first half with nine completions on 16 attempts for

Minooka football had difficulty penetrating Plainfield Central’s defense in Friday night’s Southwest Prairie battle, so the Indians turned to Nate Gunn. The standout tailback answered the challenge.

With 2:47 left at press time, Minooka led Plainfield Central, 16-12. Gunn had carried 37 times for 180 yards. That effort did not put a lot of points on the board, but kept the ball away from Central’s offense.

Gunn finally hit pay dirt when he scored from 5 yards out with 3:31 left to give the Indians a 16-6 lead.

Minutes earlier, a bad snap on a Central punt resulted in a safety, giving Minooka a 9-6 lead, and Ellis Fairley returned the ensuing kickoff to the Wildcats’ 22-yard line to set up the insurance touchdown.

Central had only three first downs on the night at that point, but came right back. Marcus Yaes hit Matt Gurke with a 47-yard strike with 2:47 left. The

Wildcats missed the two-point conversion pass attempt, leaving it, 16-12 Minooka.

Both sides had difficulty mounting a consistent offensive attack in the first half, and both scored on a long pass play.

Plainfield Central took a 6-0 lead with 9:49 left in the second quarter when Hayes hit Gurke, who also is the backup quarterback, in stride down the right side for a 64-yard score. Jarod Petrovic’s extra point attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back.

Earlier, Andrew Baranski shot around the right side and deflected Petrovic’s 23-yard field goal attempt, causing it to misfire. Andrew Black’s 57-yard run to the Minooka 7-yard line set up the scoring chance, but the Indians’ defense stiffened.

Minooka had a good drive going late in the first half, but a fumble by Gunn was recovered by the Wildcats’ Issiah Dunson at the Central 31.

Minooka defensive end Blake Parzych was a thorn in the Wildcats’ side in the opening half. He laid a huge hit on Hayes to force an incompletion, had one-and-a-half sacks and added another tackle for loss.

Minooka held on for a 16-12 win.

Fighting Irish overcome turnovers for win over Lisle

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent LISLE – With homecoming festivities prompting a move to Benedectine University, the Seneca Fighting Irish took on the Lisle Lions on Friday.

The Irish got out to a lead on the turf when Seneca tailback Alex Thornley took a toss and got the edge on the Lisle defense, scoring from 19 yards out.

An extra point by Peter Hogue gave Seneca a 7-0 lead with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter.

However, turnovers allowed Lisle to knot up the score at 7, as Seneca fumbled twice, and Lisle fumbled once, in a seven-play span. The second of those fumbles gave Lisle the

ball on Seneca’s 2-yard line, and on the first play of the drive, Grant Haen took the plunge and scored to tie the game.

The score remained 7-7 at halftime in an Interstate Eight Small game. and homecoming festivities began.

When the second half resumed, Seneca jumped back ahead when Bryce Coyle took a handoff and found a crease, gashing the Lions for a 37-yard touchdown. The extra point gave the Irish a 14-7 lead.

Lisle threatened to tie the score after a third Seneca lost fumble, but the Irish defense held strong, ultimately shutting down the Lions and holding on to a 14-7 lead.

You know the expression: These aren’t your father’s Green Bay Packers or Chicago Bears.

Actually, these might be more your father’s Packers than what we’ve come to expect from Green Bay in recent years, and in my 37 years on the NFL beat, I’ve never seen a Bears team like this.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Packers through three weeks this season are 28th in the NFL in total offense, 26th running the ball, just 22nd throwing it and only 27th in points scored.

I know what you’re thinking. But no, Aaron Rodgers still is there and he hasn’t exactly played poorly with a 95.1 passer rating, five touchdowns and only one pick.

Not Rodgers-esque, but better than 28th in total offense, right?

In addition to Rodgers, Jordy Nelson is the second-most productive wideout in the NFL with 23 catches for 351 yards and a touchdown.

Unfortunately for the Packers, that’s pretty much where it stops.

Although Randall Cobb does have three touchdowns, he’s caught 14 passes and is averaging only 9.0 yards a pop.

The biggest problem for Rodgers might be the total of eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown he’s gotten out of the tight end position in the person of Andrew Quarless.

Jermichael Finley might never have lived up to his athletic potential with the Packers, but he was so explosive from the tight end position, defenses always had to account for him on the field.

That dimension is gone from the Packers’ offense.

The fact that the offensive line has been mediocre to poor – Rodgers already has been on the ground nine times for 65 yards in losses, and Eddie Lacy has been reduced to a nonfactor rushing the ball only 12 times a game – has been the pin in the Packers’ offensive balloon.

Green Bay has been almost as ineffective on defense. It is very good against the pass,

sixth in the NFL, but actually worse than the Bears stopping the run, just 30th through three weeks and 20th in total defense and 27th in points allowed.

A lot of the Packers’ defensive problems start up front, where they are nowhere near recovered from the loss of B.J. Raji on the nose.

Mike Daniels actually has been pretty good from one five-technique, but last year’s No. 1 pick, Datone Jones is just a guy on the other end.

By ALYSSA ROSENBERG The Washington Post “There’s been the diffusion of black culture to everyone else,” Kenya Barris, the creator of the family sitcom “Blackish,” which premiered Wednesday night on ABC, “and there’s been a diffusion of black culture from black culture.”

His collaborator, writer Larry Wilmore, took the idea further when the three of us spoke about the show in Los Angeles in July.

“One of my favorite lines that Kenya wrote in the pilot, is the white kid is at (the black family’s house), and he’s looking for grape soda, and it’s like ‘Why would you assume _’ and he’s like ‘Found it!’” Wilmore explained.

“That’s kind of our relationship with appropriation. ‘How come white people can’t appreciate our thing?’ ‘Oh, they’re appreciating our thing. How dare they take it away?’”

The tensions the two men are describing are what made “Black-ish” the best new comedy pilot of the fall television season, and what have the potential to make it a show with an importance beyond pure entertainment value.

The series focuses on an upwardly mobile black Los Angeles family, headed

by Andre (Anthony Anderson), an advertising executive, his doctor wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), Andre’s father (Laurence Fishburne) and their four children. Andre appreciates the opportunities that are open to him, including a nice home and a possible promotion at his firm, but when “Blackish” begins, he is also gravely concerned that his kids are drifting from his own sense of what it means to be black, in part because they have grown up in such relative comfort.

“Early America was your immigrants assimilating into what was thought of as American, but really was Anglo-American. They didn’t want anything to do with Eastern Europeans, so you had to be Anglo-American to be considered a real American,” Wilmore, who is working on the first 12 episodes of “Blackish” before turning his attention to his upcoming Comedy Central show, “The Minority Report,” which will fill the slot vacated by Stephen Colbert. “So it’s funny how every group, everybody’s had that type of thing where there’s something gained, something lost.”

But the tension Andre is feeling does not simply play out in his own family, where he and Rainbow — who is mixed-race — have radically different perspectives on everything from their own children’s choice of sports and

Simpson is actually guilty. Instead, the great insight of “Black-ish” is that everyone has a relationship to black culture now, as well as to issues of class and gender, and that there is great comedy and great insight to be mined in looking at the fine-grained differences in the perspectives everyone brings to blackness (and whiteness), family life and money.

Or, as Barris put it: “Culture and class are our themes, but it’s really about having a family show that’s talking about something ... So much of that has been lost to zaniness. But true comedy does come from having a point of view and a perspective.”

For Andre, class may prove to be as significant as race. In a bitingly funny scene in the pilot, a Hollywood tour guide conducts a group past Andre’s house, telling her customers “if you look to your left, you’ll see the mythical and majestic black family, out of their natural habitat, and yet still thriving!”

Having money “makes him feel conspicuous,” explained Wilmore, offering up his own experience as an example.

“During the (1992) riots, I happened to be moving from Brentwood to Hancock

Park. I was just starting in television. I had my old Celica, this like, 1979 Celica, and I had boxes of my stuff, camcorder, stuff like that, as if I had been looting ... This is my stuff, and I started feeling guilty ... I thought, what if somebody stops me! It’s this weird feeling, it was very bizarre.”

“You look around right now, and it’s us, it’s me and Larry,” Barris agreed, pointing out the whiteness of the hotel bar where we were talking. “I got a head nod from the brother working here,” Wilmore joked.

“That premise is a great starting point for a lot of different conversations,” Barris suggested, pointing out that the combination of race and class in a single perspective can produce new comedic insights about both. “We are a culture that came from, in this country, nothing. We were enslaved. There is a sort of part of us, within some of us, that wants to makes sure you know we’re not. And that’s where the flashiness comes from. I know for myself, I want to make sure you know this is who I am.”

Quinn talks minimum wage, education, development during visit to region

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gov. Pat Quinn emphasized support Friday for more investments in early childhood education, raising the minimum wage and several regional developments.

The Democratic incumbent, who faces Republican challenger Bruce Rauner in November, came to Joliet’s Patrick Haley Mansion to speak about his vision for Illinois to local business and political leaders during an event put on by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Among the many issues Quinn covered were stronger investments in education and raising the minimum wage as ways to grow the state economy. He also expressed support for the Illiana Expressway and South Suburban Airport developments in what he said was the “fastest growing county” in the state.

Initiatives Quinn called for more investment in early childhood education, saying there were 1 million children from birth to age 5 who need it. Quinn has proposed a five-year, $1.5 billion initiative to expand prenatal care, early care and learning opportunities.

“When you invest in early childhood education, it pays dividends in a lifetime,” he said.

He also called for more financial investment in scholarships for higher education.

Fresh or frozen, produce offers nutritional benefits Dear Doctor K: I’m trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, but I don’t have time to go to the grocery store every week. So, I stock up on frozen produce. Am I missing out on any nutritional benefits by eating frozen instead of fresh?

Dear Reader: For taste, variety and quality of nutrients, recently picked local produce is the way to go. But if fresh produce is inconvenient or beyond your budget, frozen fruits and vegetables provide plenty of nutrition.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are indeed more nutritious, but the difference between fresh and frozen produce may not be as stark as you think. Researchers at the University of California-Davis found that: • Fresh and frozen produce are similar in terms of carbohydrate, protein, fiber and mineral content.

• Fresh produce can lose half of its vitamins and beneficial plant-derived chemicals during storage or cooking.

• More water-soluble vitamins such as C are lost during the frozen packaging process than

But if the produce is labeled as locally grown, it probably is fresh. If you ask a farm stand clerk if the produce was picked today, you will usually get an honest answer.

As my wife would be the first to tell you, I’m not a “foodie.”

I’m more of a gourmand than a gourmet. So I asked a colleague for some advice.

and a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School. She explains that grocery store produce may be picked unripe so it can be stored for months. Then it may be artificially speed-ripened on its way to the grocery shelf. As a result, it may be less nutritious than naturally matured fruits and vegetables.

Produce destined for the freezer aisle is picked when ripe.

It may be briefly cooked in hot water and then frozen in or near the fields. This helps to preserve its nutritional value.

So, the bottom line for me is: Don’t worry too much about whether your produce is fresh or frozen. If stocking up on frozen fruits and vegetables helps you get your five-to-nine daily servings, stick with it.

But if you pass a farmers market, make a quick stop for some fresh peaches or apples. Your taste buds will thank you.

These young victims suffer from anorexia nervosa.

Boys who become anorexic are not trying to be slim. They are generally pressured by their families to succeed.

Guys want to gain muscle and strength, not lose weight.

I had the good fortune to be able to work with teens at a psychiatric hospital in Santa Ana, California, a while back and counseled a number of young adults who suffered from anorexia nervosa.

In the four years I counseled anorexic teens, only one was a young man. It took several years for him to eat a normal meal.

Dr. Wallace: I am 19, have a full-time job and live at home with my parents and two younger sisters. My dad is a great dad and is a good provider for his family.

I love my parents very much, but sometimes my mom makes this a very difficult chore. She is a very poor household manager. She rarely drives, so she depends on me to take her to the doctor, to the cleaners, to the grocery store and everywhere else she wants to go. She constantly reminds me that she “couldn’t function”

To end this week’s look at various suit fits, a wild deal in which each side has a double fit.

A double fit (almost always) produces more tricks than the point-count would suggest.

And if one side has a double fit, so does the other. The usual guideline in these deals is to declare.

First, though, look only at the West hand. What would you lead against six hearts doubled after that exciting sequence?

Once you have decided, study the full layout. What do you think of the auction? What is par – the result when both sides do as well as possible?

If this deal were played at 10 tables, you would surely have 10 different auctions.

First, East might jump straight to four spades. Although this risks missing a slam, it does make South’s life much harder.

Here, if East did bid four spades, I guess South would compete with five diamonds.

That would go back to East, who might suddenly be inconsistent, bidding six clubs. One minute, he is happy with game; the next, he is forcing to slam.

In the given sequence, it is vital for South to bid five diamonds. When you know of a double fit, tell partner. North’s six-heart bid might turn a plus into a minus, but it avoids the risk of a big minus.

Six hearts doubled is defeated by three tricks if East receives a diamond ruff and the defenders correctly cash their three black-suit tricks.

Six spades will make if East guesses clubs correctly.

The par result is seven diamonds doubled down three.

MORRIS – Bright smiles and sequins took over downtown Morris on Friday night as the Grundy County Corn Festival queen candidates paraded down Liberty Street.

This year’s title went to Devin Fisher of Gardner South Wilmington High School.

Before Fisher was chosen, last year’s queen Peighton Shannon doled out advice to the new queen, telling her to be prepared for “a lot of parades and a lot of girls telling you you’re pretty.”

The 12 contestants represented every local high school except for Minooka High School, which had its Homecoming dance Friday and could not attend.

The pool of 12 was narrowed down to Fisher, Isabela Garcia of Morris Community High School and Skyler Hibbard of Coal City High School.

The three girls were selected by their respective schools in advance, but were announced on stage.

Following tradition, Shannon selected this year’s queen from the three contestants by drawing their names at random.

Fisher is the daughter of Brian and Jennifer Fisher, and she is a junior at Gardner South Wilmington High School.

Morris High School principal Coloring inside the lines pleased with test performance

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School Principal Kelly Hussey is pleased with results of the school’s ACT college benchmark scores.

On Friday, he said the Class of 2014 results show students were above both state and national benchmark scores.

“Our ACT scores are stronger than our PSAE [Prairie State Achievement Examination] scores,” Hussey said.

“I feel very, very good about carrying 0.5 over the national composite score, with everyone taking the ACT.” The ACT test assesses readiness for college. The Class of 2014 had a composite ACT score of 21.5, while

the state composite score was 20.7. The national composite was 21; the highest possible score is a 36.

The Class of 2016 will be the last class mandated to have all students take the ACT. The mandate started with the Class of 2002. Before then, only college-bound students took the test.

There was an initial drop in scores as the school switched to 100 percent participation. MCHS experienced lows of 19.3 and 19.5 with the graduating classes of 2003 and 2004, respectively.

“Eight of the 14 years since we switched to 100 percent participation, we’ve been at or above a 20, which is where we were prior when only college-bound students were taking the ACT,” Hussey said.

He said he views the ACT as a motivator to push students.

This year will be the last year the state will pay to have all students take the test, and he’s uncertain of what lies ahead.

“What will disappoint me going forward is if 100 percent can no longer take the test,” Hussey said. “I will encourage all students to take it, and learn about their strengths and aptitude.”

Superintendent Pat Halloran said the district is looking at ways to continue having 100 percent of students take the ACT. “We don’t know how or what ability we will have to do this,” Halloran said. “We’ve certainly seen the positives from the trend data.”

Illiana tollway project receives clearance

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The Federal Highway Administration gave the green light Friday to the Illiana Expressway project, meaning transportation officials can move forward with the proposed $1.5 billion, 47-mile tollway linking Interstate 55 near Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana.

The federal agency Friday announced the completion of the Illiana Corridor project’s tier two environmental impact study, which expands on an earlier tier one study outlining the need for transportation improvements for east-west travel in the 952 square-mile corridor.

The tier two environmental impact study details a more specific route, noting that the design provides the least environmental harm to the area.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Friday he’s pleased with the announcement.

“It’s another piece in a longterm puzzle,” Walsh Jr. said.

“It’s a much-needed piece of infrastructure that will help the growth of Will County.”

The tollway’s proposed path would skirt the south edge of the planned South Suburban Airport, connecting it with nearby trucking intermodal yards in Joliet and Elwood, Walsh Jr. said.

The study also includes detailed engineering and environmental analysis that refine the project’s features, impacts, and right-of-way footprint within the preferred route. Some of the engineering work also included interchange locations and layout, drainage studies and overpass and underpass opportunities.

Illinois Department of Transportation’s acting secretary Erica Borggren called the FHA’s recommendation and release of the study a “significant milestone,” in a statement released Friday.

While the federal agency recommended that the project move forward, it noted “major unresolved issues with other agencies” that the project leaders will have to resolve. Those issues includes resolving the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s concerns about some endangered species located along the route.

Another issue, though not noted in the study, is the pushback the project has received from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, which controls federal funding for major projects in the region. The agency could vote to remove the project from its GO TO 2040 plan at its upcoming Oct. 8 meeting, effectively putting a stop to the state’s plan for the expressway.

With the release of the tier two study on Friday, the federal agency will now consider additional comments for a 30-day public comment period. An official record of decision – which would allow the project to proceed – is expected by IDOT later this year. Once state officials get federal approval, land acquisition can began.

If approved, construction on the Illiana could start in late summer or fall of 2015.

SPRINGFIELD – Pam Roth packed her bags and moved to Texas last year.

That in itself isn’t unusual.

Illinois ranked second in the nation for people leaving for other states in 2013, according to a United Van Lines migration study. And Texas ranked seventh in the nation for people moving in, according to the same study.

What makes Roth’s case unusual is she was a sitting Illinois state representative when she left. Roth, formerly of Morris, served as a Republican for the 75th District in the Illinois House from 2011 to 2013.

“My husband was offered an opportunity to transfer to Texas and get a bump up in pay – and we took it,” she said. “I’m amazed by how prosperous it is down here. Everywhere you look, there are cranes and buildings going up. This is very much what happens when you live in a business friendly state with low taxes.”

Texas does not have an income tax, while Illinois has a 5 percent tax rate.

“Property taxes are a little bit lower here in Fort Bend County [Texas] than they were back in Morris,” she said.

“And sales taxes are about the same – like you’re shopping in Joliet.”

Between 1994 and 2011, Illinois lost more than $2.4 billion in household income to Texas, said Travis H. Brown, a St. Louis researcher who has studied Internal Revenue Service data and wrote the book, “How Money Walks.”

Brown said that equates to about 40,000 households. Texas is one of the fastest growing in the country, he said, generating 252,000 new jobs last year alone.

Roth said she believes Texas’ job growth is being fueled by the state’s economic and political climate.

“One other nice thing about Texas is the Legislature,” she said. “It’s truly a citizens’ Legislature. They meet every two years and get paid, I think,

$7,500 a year. By having a Legislature that is not paid a living salary and that doesn’t meet but every other year, you get a smaller government and less government intrusion.”

Illinois pays its lawmakers a base salary of $67,836 a year and an additional $10,327 to those chairing a committee or serving as a minority party spokesman. The Illinois Legislature meets from January until June most years.

Roth said she sees plenty of Illinois license plates in her community – a concern for Texans. They’re afraid that transplants from Illinois and California will bring their state’s political thinking with them, she said.

Roth added Illinois’ problems are well-known throughout Texas as more Illinoisans make the move.

“I’m a firm believer that the majority of people want to work. They want to be valued. … If you can’t do that because there are no jobs around and you are forced to leave your hometown then that’s what you do. I think people in Illinois are at that point.”

Brown said this reflects a long-term problem in Illinois.

He said many of the jobs moving from Illinois to Texas are corporate moves – like State Farm. It’s headquarters are considered to be in Bloomington, but he noted State Farm has an 183-acre campus, $1.5 billion project underway 11 miles northeast of Dallas.

Illinois’ fiscal woes and legacy of political corruption are well-known to Roth’s Texas neighbors – and she finds that frustrating. When people find out where she’s from, they often ask which Illinois governor is going to prison.

“But there is no reason Illinois should be the laughingstock,” Roth said. “I was so proud to be a part of the Legislature and to work bipartisanly. I miss it. Illinois should be doing well with a financial center like Chicago, a highly skilled workforce and a central location. There is no reason it should be the laughingstock.”

8 Log Home Festival offers artisans place to demonstrate their wares

Morris-based painter Jean Grommon has been a vendor at the Daggett family’s Log Cabin Festival for the past 18 years and said she has watched the event grow over the years.

Grommon does not sell her

work at the event, but paints decorative oil paintings most of the weekend.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to show the community what I do,” Grommon said.

Grommon said the Daggett’s carefully curated vendors and friendly atmosphere elevate the festival above other craft shows.

Woodworker Chris Yonker

of Palos Heights said its the only show he and his wife participate in all year.

“We love it,” he said. “We’re all like family two days out of the year.”

MORRIS – For 363 days, Ken and Judy Daggett’s home on Southmor Road is private property, but for two days every September, their residence is transformed into a favorite local attraction.

Thousands of visitors flock to the family’s remotely located house for the annual Log Home Festival, now entering its 24th year.

The Daggett’s large yard overflows with artisans of all types – blacksmith, woodworker, painter, jewelry maker, quilter, potter, photographer.

The list includes more than 50 unique vendors, each one personally selected by Judy and Ken. The artists not only sell their crafts, but many vendors also demonstrate their trade live for festival-goers, including one man who makes large wood sculptures using a chain saw.

Friday afternoon, a small crowd gathered around blacksmith Bud Harvey as he forged a tomahawk using coal-fed flames, a large hammer and an anvil.

“We normally go to shows about every weekend, but don’t do these live demonstrations very often,” Harvey said. “We love coming up here to Morris.

The Daggetts are wonderful.”

Bud and his wife, Janelle, drive from Chillicothe for the log home fest. They’ve been coming for about 10 years.

The first year, Janelle said she was skeptical after driving down winding country roads to reach the Daggett home, which is located in a rural part of Grundy County.

“I thought, ‘Nobody’s going to come out here,’ but we had about 2,500 people that first Saturday,” Janelle said. “Now, we don’t even care if we sell, really. We just love coming.”

The festival originated inside the Daggett home where the family would display a few crafts from local artists and sell their restored antique furniture.

The event became too big to keep inside, so they added a small outdoor tent to accommodate the growing demand.

“It just blossomed from there,” Judy said.
