Seneca student completes two summer experiences

BRIEFS Olivet Nazarene dean’s list announced Olivet Nazarene University announces that the following area students were named to the dean’s list during the spring 2014 semester: Jacqueline Deslauriers of Morris; Jennifer Druse of Coal City; Lauren Hausken of Morris.

To qualify for inclusion, a student must have been enrolled as a full-time undergraduate and must have attained a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale.

Area resident accepted to Illinois veterinary college Chaney Tambling, daughter of Mr. Mike and Mrs. Shari Tambling of Dwight, has been accepted to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana.

Admission to the college, which is one of only 30 veterinary schools in the nation, is highly competitive. Criteria for acceptance include grade point average, admission test scores, background and experience, and personal interviews. Tambling is one of 126 members entering the Class of 2018.

Tambling’s class will participate in an innovative new curriculum taught only at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Illinois, called the Illinois Integrated Veterinary Professional Curriculum.

Tambling graduated from Dwight Township High School in 2010. She then attended Augustana College in Rock Island, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology and Spanish in 2014.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD Saint Mary’s College senior Kaitlin Maierhofer of Seneca was kept busy with two very different jobs this summer.

At the beginning of summer, she worked at the Kendall County Treasurer’s Office in Illinois to help process property taxes, according to a news release from the college. She then returned to Saint Mary’s campus in Notre Dame in July to work as a fine arts camp counselor. Maierhofer is a math major with minors in secondary education and intercultural studies.

Work piles up for absent Congress Even for this do-nothing Congress, this is appalling. After a five-week summer vacation, the honorables spent barely a week at work before heading home again – this time until after the November election.

From their perspective, that may be their most important task – to get re-elected, however, most are running for relatively safe seats. That makes it even more important for constituents to show up at town halls to ask tough questions and hold members of Congress accountable. Too often, these events become promotional campaign appearances.

For many members of Congress, if they tell voters how hard they’re working, they’ll be stretching the truth, to put it charitably.

The current recess means that between Aug. 1 and Nov. 12, the Republican-led House will be in session a grand total of 10 days. That’s shameful given the state of our nation and world.

Before wrapping up Sept. 18, the House did the bare essentials – approving President Barack Obama’s request to arm Syrian rebels to help fight the Islamic State and passing a funding resolution to avoid another damaging federal government shutdown.

The Democratic-majority Senate followed suit in skipping town. The two parties’ leaders blame each other for blocking measures passed by the other chamber. What Americans see is partisan gridlock getting in the way of help they need.

The 113th Congress is on track to be the least productive in 60 years, with barely 160 pieces of legislation enacted so far – about 120 fewer than the previous Congress at the same point and 220 fewer than the one before that. It’s not a perfect measure – it’s worse for Congress to pass bad laws than none at all – but it’s an indicator of how historically lax our lawmakers have been.

While it’s no surprise that Congress hasn’t taken up immigration reform, there’s a long list of other pressing issues put off until after the election: tax reform, domestic surveillance, minimum wage, defense policy, foreign trade, and the care of mentally ill people, just to name a few.

Is it any wonder that Obama has resorted to executive actions to get things done? House Republicans, of course, did find the time and energy to sue the president.

Indeed, the stalemate in Washington, D.C., is fine with many Republicans, who hope to take control of the Senate and keep a majority in the House on Nov. 4.

The only potential upside is that in a lame-duck session – without re-election to worry about – members of Congress might do what’s best for the country.

Given their recent track record, however, that’s probably too much to ask.

Parade should include all communities March might be a bit far off, but a St. Patrick’s Day brawl has come early. No one seems happy by the recent decision to include OUT@NBCUniversal, an LGBT activist group in New York’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

For the sake of clarity: St. Patrick is the patron saint of the archdiocese of New York; and although Catholics always have been a big part of the parade, the parade is not run by the church.

“We believe that love is our mission, and that this mission is the only way we can be fully alive and be who we were created to be,” said a church text published in preparation for the pope’s expected visit to America next fall, when he’s scheduled to attend a conference on the family. “We believe that this love should be taught, shared and communicated in and through the family, the domestic church.”

This “love is our mission” stuff might sound trite, but it is exactly that kind of basic renewal – and what it could bring for men, women and families – that so concerns the church as of this moment. It’s about people who live their faith in the world and thus serve as beacons

Groups such as Courage, which serves and supports men and women attracted to members of the same gender who choose to live chastely – joyfully, but by no means in a Pollyannaish or all-problemssolved way.

In explaining his decision to be grand marshal of the parade even with the OUT group, Cardinal Dolan said “people with same-sex attraction are God’s children, deserving dignity and respect, never to be treated with discrimination or injustice.”

This is in the catechism of the Catholic Church. It’s been said again and again – even by a

pope – but it sometimes takes a media circus for it to be heard.

Probably the best-known contemporary exemplar of practical faith, hope and love was Mother Teresa. “Her love was concrete and enterprising,” Pope John Paul II said of her shortly after her death.

The Missionaries of Charities, which Mother Teresa founded, serve the “poorest of the poor,” reaching out to the most forgotten and even feared. “It spurred her to go where few had the courage to go, wherever poverty was so great as to be frightening,” JP II said. According to him, Mother Teresa “incarnated that love which Jesus indicated as the distinctive mark of his disciples.”

Whether over green beer or after Mass, nothing about Church teaching is going to resonate if the love that Mother Teresa radiated is missing.

Let’s keep it in the parade.

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Karl Hoinkes was the football coach at Oswego, his Panthers and Morris usually were the two teams battling for the conference title, whether it was the Little Seven, the Southwest Prairie or the Suburban Prairie. And, two more things could be counted on from Hoinkes. His teams were going to be physical, and they were going to run their offense from the I formation.

Hoinkes since has moved his office from Oswego to Yorkville, but not much else has changed. He has brought the Foxes to the upper echelon of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, his team still plays a physical brand of football and his offense still runs the I. Friday night, Yorkville brings a 4-0 record into Morris to take on the 2-2 Redskins in what may not be a “mustwin” game for the home squad to start the NIB 12 East schedule, but it certainly is a “sure-could-use-a-win” game.

Yorkville used 310 yards and four touchdowns rushing from running back Nick Kurtz to hand Kaneland a 41-25 defeat last week, while Morris saw a 21-7 lead fall by the wayside in a heartbreaking 28-27 overtime loss to Sterling.

Although the Redskins can expect to see a steady diet of Kurtz, Morris’ offense has become a more balanced attack in the past few weeks. With Jake Walker healing from an ankle injury, the running load has been shared by Keagan Sobol (321 yards on 44 carries), Griffin Sobol (244 yards on 33

carries) and Matt Feiden (97 yards on 15 carries). When he has been able to get on the field, Walker has turned in 120 yards on 31 attempts. Through the air, Griffin Sobol has completed 32 of 56 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns against only one interception.

The Redskins suffered a pair of losses from the defensive unit last week, as safety Tyler Post broke his ankle in practice and Mark Lincoln suffered a season-ending arm injury during Friday night’s loss to Sterling. Walker, on the other hand, appears to be fully mended and is expected to see action.

“Walker is going to play, and that’s going to help,” Thorson said. “Plus, the quarterback running the ball has been a big part of the offense

since I took over. We did it with Austin Feeney and we did it with Zach Cinnamon.

This year, Griffin is showing that he can do it, plus his throwing accuracy keeps getting better.

“We are at a part of the season where we control our own destiny. We had a great practice [Tuesday] and we hope we

can carry that through this week and into Friday night’s game. We need to put last week behind us, move ahead and cut down on some of the mistakes we have been making. Some of them are mistakes that we shouldn’t have at this point of the season. If we can do that and remain relatively healthy, I think we will be fine.”

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears generally have been waiting until the last minute to rule out players publicly, but coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday linebacker Shea McClellin will not play Sunday against the Packers.

McClellin injured his hand in practice last week and missed the Jets game Monday.

In Week 10 last season, he had

three sacks in Green Bay and was named the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week. Jon Bostic started for McClellin against the Jets and will continue to do so from the strongside linebacker position.

The Bears did not practice Wednesday after Monday night’s game. Instead, they had a 90-minute closed walkthrough but still had to release a hypothetical injury report.

Neither was Detroit’s before its unprecedented Week 3 victory, the Lions’ first against the Packers when Aaron Rodgers went the distance.

But the NFL’s co-receiving leader, Jordy Nelson, said Wednesday his team isn’t panicking despite one of the worst offensive outings of the Rodgers era in Week 3. The reason?

“Just knowing that we’ve been through it before,” Nelson

said. “We’ve been 1-2 the last two years, so it’s early. Every year is different, every team is different, so we just got to figure out what’s going to work for this team, this year, and ride with that.”

Green Bay’s recent success at Soldier Field, Nelson said, might give the Packers confidence, but he knows history guarantees nothing, especially with all the changes both teams have undergone. One such change is the arrival of outstanding rookie Kyle Fuller, who should see plenty of action Sunday lined up across from Nelson.

“He’s doing a great job,” Nelson said. “He’s attacking, and that’s what Chicago has always done. You can tell they teach it and preach it there. …

Patience pays for Tyler Baran in STARS win SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Patience is a key for any younger sibling.

They have to watch their older brother or sister reach all the milestone ages before they do. In Saturday night’s D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget feature at Grundy County Speedway, it was time for the little brother to finally make his own mark.

Just seven weeks after his older brother, Nick, captured his first career D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget feature victory, Plainfield’s Tyler Baran added his name to the record book as the latest firsttime winner in the series after his triumph during Saturday night’s ’70s and ’80s Night” event.

Coming into the night’s event, Kyle Hamilton had won three consecutive STARS races at the 1⁄ 3-mile paved oval.

From the start, Hamilton proved once again he was the man to beat. His 14.474 second lap during qualifying earned him his seventh fast qualifying time of the year and the 11th in his career in only 16 starts. Hamilton then easily picked his way through the field to win the heat. A draw of three would mean he would have a favorable position for the 30-lap feature from the inside of the second row.

Tyler Baran and Kyle O’Gara led the field down to the green flag in the penultimate race of the STARS season. At the start, Baran was able to get the jump on O’Gara to lead the first lap. Baran set a torrid pace early on, setting the quickest lap of the race on lap six. Remarkably, his quick lap of 14.552 in the feature was quicker than his qualifying run.

Nobody was able to give Baran a serious challenge for

the win as he led all 30 laps and cruised to a comfortable victory over O’Gara, Jim Anderson, series point leader Austin Prock and Hamilton. It was Tyler’s 19th career STARS feature start, just one more start than Nick had when he earned his initial feature win in August.

In that race, Nick was driving Tyler’s familiar yellow BBOYZ No. 11 because his car was out of commission because of engine problems.

Tyler didn’t put any added pressure on himself to win after Nick finally broke through for a win. Instead, it made him

feel more confident that he was going to pull into victory lane soon.

Throughout the feature, Tyler’s mind was focused on hitting his marks and not worrying about the cars around him.

With the advantage of starting up front, he planned to run his own race, pull away from the field, and never look back.

Indeed, that’s what he did and the feeling of victory was something that he couldn’t put into words.

SANDWICH – In an annual race that has a bit of a different format, the Morris cross country team defeated Sandwich to win the Chief Trophy on Tuesday. It was the third straight year that the Redskins have earned the hardware.

All times from each school are counted and averaged. The team with the lower team average wins the traveling trophy, known as The Chief.

Morris’ Jacob Wantland won the boys race in 16:33, while freshman Mya Shannon was first in the girls race in 19:35. The top five Morris boys finishers were Wantland, Zach Chapman (second, 17:29), Jake Hesslau (third 17:53), Al Alvarez (fourth, 17:58) and Tristan DeGrush (seventh, 18:12). In the girls race, it was Shannon for the Redskins, followed by Meghan Smith (22:22), Maria Blanco (23:37), Katherine Gallick (23:41) and Sophie Tibbott (23:42).

The Morris team average was 22:43, while the Sandwich average was 23:16.

“Our average was significantly higher this year,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said.

“It was 21-flat two years ago and 20:59 last year. But, our top times and our varsity times are faster, so there’s good with the bad. It’s a fun meet, a different meet, and every single runner matters.

“I wish we would have utilized our pack mentality a little more to push each other, but we ran hard, and that’s important. Now we go to work at practice for a week, hope to stay healthy and watch times drop as October nears.”

Jim proudly served with the United States Navy from December 8, 1952, until August 19, 1955, when he was honorably discharged.

He married Janice R. Dock on June 11, 1955. She preceded him in death on July 1, 2009.

Jim worked at Caterpillar for many years as a welder and was a self-employed refrigeration/appliance repairman.

He enjoyed reading, walking, and volunteering his time for the Morris Hospital Transportation Bus. Jim was an avid Morris Redskins fan for over 28 years and never missed a

game. He also enjoyed the races at the Grundy County Speedway.

Survived by his daughter, Laurie Johann, of Mesa, AZ; and son, Jamie Gilbert; grandson, Paul (Erin) Kindelspire of Morris; two great-granddaughters, Kaelyn and Kiley; and great-grandson, Kaden Kindelspire, all of Morris; sisters, Jessie Flueher, Sally (Joe) Mulay, and Diana (Ed) Leifheit; and brother-in-law, Ron Perrson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; sisters, Nancy Gilbert, Delores Mahaffey, Kathy Lambert, and Linda Perrson.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. ome years the Great Plains swarm with grasshoppers.

But this was not a problem for Febold Feboldson! He brought in a prairie schooner full of flying fish. Those flying fish swooped over the plains, eating grasshoppers until there were none left!

About 150 years ago, thousands of pioneers began heading for rich farmland in Oregon and later, for gold in California.

After crossing the Mississippi River they came to the wide, flat prairie we now call the Great Plains. From these Great Plains have come tales of a giant Swedish farmer called Febold Feboldson.

he first year Febold Feboldson settled on the Great Plains it was hot. And it got hotter every day: hotter and drier, drier and hotter. It was so hot that iron pots melted!

When the streams dried up and Febold Feboldson couldn’t go fishing, he said, “Enough!”

Febold sat down and cupped his jaw in his giant hand, and thought and thought — until suddenly he came up with a plan.

First he splashed some water on a hot and tired frog and whispered in its ear, “It’s raining!”

The happy frog croaked the news to his frog friends.

Soon more frogs joined in the song. They got so loud that it sounded like thunder!

Some clouds heard the noise and hurried to join the storm. Seeing there was no storm when they got to the Great Plains, the clouds went ahead and started their own, giving Febold Feboldson a rainstorm and a chance to get back to fishing.

‘The Notebook’: More strange than startling

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post As with “The Tin Drum,” Volker Schlöndorff’s surreally allegorical 1979 film based on Günter Grass’s book about a strangely ageless German boy, it’s hard to interpret the events depicted in “The Notebook” – another book making the leap to the big screen – as anything other than metaphors. But for what, it’s not entirely clear. This adaptation of Agota Kristof’s 1986 novel is impossible to take literally, yet too obscure to read between the lines.

On the most superficial level, the film shows how war hardens the human heart.

Set in Hungary during the final months of World War II, “The Notebook” centers around twin boys (played by real-life brothers András and László Gyémánt) who become twisted into sociopaths by their experience of brutality.

After being left by their moth-

er (Gyöngyvér Bognár) with their grandmother (Piroska Molnár), an abusive alcoholic who lives in a hovel near a German concentration camp, the children gradually turn into monsters.

The boys beat each other with belts and hurl insults at each other, hoping to inure themselves to physical pain and insult. They forgo food, roll in the snow and walk in the open during air raids in an attempt to become impervious to hunger, cold and fear.

At first, these seem like understandable reactions to abandonment, compounded by the mistreatment they receive at the hands of the grandmother, who smacks them around, treats them like slave labor, withholds food from them and steals the care packages mailed to them by their mother. The old woman is a thoroughly nasty person, and it’s no wonder that she’s known to the locals as the “witch.”

But the boys quickly begin to evince behavior that goes well beyond what one might expect from children in similar straits. They compulsively kill insects and then – in a shocking and, quite frankly, implausible series of escalations – do much, much worse.

Most bizarrely, they befriend both the Nazi commander of the concentration camp (Ulrich Thomsen), a creepy pedophile who admires their Spartan regimen, and a kindly old Jewish shoemaker (János Derzsi) who gives them free boots.

To all appearances, they are motivated neither by ideology nor human feeling.

Rather, their actions seem dictated by the necessities of the fiction, the point of which is never clear.

It would be unfair to expect verisimilitude from a tale like this. Like Oskar from “The Tin Drum,” the unnamed twins aren’t real people so much as, I don’t know,

manifestations of the schizoid post-war Hungarian national psyche, or something.

Inseparable throughout the film, they agree to do something at the end of the movie that is utterly preposterous, even given the bizarre occurrences that have already taken place. (As in “Drum,” there is a scene of sex with an older woman that seems a gratuitous attempt to shock, as well as other odd episodes that lend “The Notebook” the flavor of magic realism.) Yet the ending of the film is not just bizarre, but emotionally unsupported. That would be fine, if only I could figure out what all this was meant to stand for.

• “The Notebook” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains violence, nudity, sexuality, obscenity and mature thematic material. It is in Hungarian and German with subtitles and runs 112 minutes.

No single test can diagnose Alzheimer’s Dear Doctor K: My husband’s doctor suspects that he has Alzheimer’s disease and wants him to have neuropsychological testing.

What will these tests involve?

Dear Reader: There is no single test that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, a doctor cannot make the diagnosis with absolute confidence without studying the brain under the microscope, which is rarely done except in an autopsy.

Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed presumptively by a combination of different types of evidence. The disease typically has a slowly progressive onset. Sudden confusion or speech problems, for example, are not caused by Alzheimer’s.

Indeed, a very important part of making a presumptive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is first ruling out many other causes of thinking problems. Other conditions, such as a brain tumor, can impair a person’s thinking. So can certain medicines.

When doctors suspect that a person may be developing Alzheimer’s disease, they often perform multiple tests to evaluate different aspects of thinking. The tests may involve paper and pencil, or may be administered by interacting with a computer: • Attention. A major reason people fail to remember new in-

There are many tests to assess attention. For example, the doctor might read a sequence of numbers, then ask the person to repeat back as many as he can remember.

• Memory. Memory testing usually requires that a person listen to or look at some information and then answer questions about it. Or the person may be asked to repeat it back immediately, and then again 10 to 30 minutes later. The doctor might also test long-term memory, things that almost everyone knows that happened long ago.

For example, your husband might be asked to name his birthplace, or who was the president of the United States during World War II. • Executive function. This is an umbrella term for high-level thinking skills. These include reasoning, problem solving, planning, inhibiting impulses and resisting distraction in order to stay focused on a task. These abilities often become impaired in early Alzheimer’s disease.

• Language. Language functions include being able to ex-

press yourself through speaking and writing. They also involve understanding what another person is saying or what you are reading. The doctor may ask the person to name common objects.

For example, the doctor may hold up a pencil and ask your husband what it’s called. Problems with naming and word finding can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Your husband may be asked to follow instructions or describe a picture in writing.

• Spatial ability. This involves analyzing visual information – shapes, faces, and routes between locations on a map, for example.

Tests may include drawing and copying designs, solving maze puzzles, and putting blocks together to construct a specific pattern.

Neuropsych testing cannot, alone, definitively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. However, the testing results, along with the medical history, brain-imaging studies and other evidence, can give the doctor pretty strong evidence for or against Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Wallace: I am the 14-year-old boy who wrote to you some time ago and told you that I hated school and was thinking about running away, or even worse, because a boy at school was picking on me every day. He demanded my lunch money, and if I didn’t give it to him he used me as a punching bag. I had gone to my school counselor and even the principal, but they didn’t do anything.

Even though I was fairly big, I was known as a sissy. I would just take it and never fight back.

You told me to stand up for myself and to defend myself the next time I was bullied. The next time was the next day. I refused to give him my lunch money and he started punching me. I then jumped on him, knocking him down and getting a few good punches in. I wound up with a bloody nose, but he had a lump on his head the size of an egg.

I want to thank you for your advice. I was suspended from school for two days, but it was well worth it. The bully also got a two-day suspension. The great news is that this guy has never bothered me again. In fact, he now talks to me once in a while and I am totally civil toward him.

After you printed my letter and gave me your advice, I noticed the column where a lot of people did not like it that you told me to fight back. It’s easy for them to disagree with you and to say that fighting is never the best way to solve a problem. But they were not in my situation. At times, when I was being pounded and robbed, the thought of ending my life flashed

This is a frightening and complex situation that cannot be solved by a formulaic answer, even one as noble as “turn the other cheek,” which some interpret as meaning “avoid confrontation at all costs.”

This simply won’t work.

Sometimes you have to confront your tormentor – and sometimes doing so means throwing a punch or two.

I say this as a proponent of nonviolence.

But I also believe that when ignoring bullies does not work, you have to speak to bullies in a language they understand. You did so by fighting back.

I truly believe you defeated more than just one cowardly lunch-money extortionist. You defeated your own sense of helplessness in the face of life’s problems.

“Lana,” my wife of 14 years, and I had the perfect marriage. When I discovered she was having an affair, it hit me like a train wreck.

After many weeks of trying to discover who she really is, I found out she has had several affairs throughout our marriage.

Ann Landers said, “One out of four people in this country is mentally unbalanced. Think of your three closest friends; if they seem OK, then you’re the one.”

Earlier this week, we saw deals in which a balanced fit (both partners had the same number of cards in it) was a better trump suit than an unbalanced. And that will usually be the case. But one time when a 4-4 fit is not best occurs when the trump holding is weak, resulting in an inevitable loser or two, and there are discards available from the other two side suits for those losers if it is the third side suit. This is typically the case in a slam – as in this deal.

When North opens one no-trump, South, with only a five-loser hand, should immediately be thinking about a slam.

He uses Stayman and learns of the 4-4 spade fit. But rather than opt immediately for that suit as trumps, he sensibly shows his club suit first. North rebids three hearts to indicate values in that suit and, by inference, weak diamonds. After that, the auction gets a tad murky around the edges, but South should prefer his strong clubs to those pitiful spades.

In six spades, North must lose one spade and one heart (and would go down two if spades broke 4-1). However, six clubs has 12 tricks: two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs.

Finally, note that if NorthSouth play transfers into the minors, there would be a strong case for South’s ignoring the spade suit and immediately transferring into clubs.

For 43 years, area fire departments have converged on the Grundy County Corn Festival, where they battle one another to see who is the best water fighter. They use the skill they’ve learned on the job to aim a steady stream of water at a barrel suspended by a wire trying to force past the opposing team to win.

Mazon Fire Department Assistant Chief Thomas Sereno Jr. has competed in 32 of the 43 Corn Festival water fights, and this year he is hanging up his helmet, competing at Corn Festival for the last time.

“It’s fun, it’s a blast,” Sereno Jr. said. “We used to have a traveling team years ago.”

He said he enjoys getting together for the battle because it gives him a chance to see old friends.

In his many years of competing, he’s learned a few tricks, tricks that he has passed down to his daughter, Melissa Pumphrey, a firefighter and first responder with Mazon Fire Department.

“He always told me just

don’t fall down,” she said just before competing Wednesday night for her third year in a row.

Sereno Jr. said the real trick to winning is to keep the barrel away from the opponents stream of water.

He said he’ll miss competing, but he plans to come back and watch the competition every year.

Lt. Nick Doerfler with the Coal City Fire Protection District said, sometimes the best strategy is no strategy. His plans were just to go out, have fun and hit the barrel with the stream of water.

The firefighters consider themselves brothers and sisters regardless of which team they are on, and when one is missing, even when it’s been six years, they are still felt.

Morris firefighter Steve “Tiny” Kline was a man who never missed a water fight, hauling the barrel back into position after each battle.

Kline died in November 2008, but for those who have been coming each year, it seems like yesterday.

“It seems like everyone here was his partner at one time,” Doerfler said. “Tiny’s presence is felt not just in Morris, but throughout fire service.”

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Drivers should be prepared to slow down and stop at the Route 47 intersection where the new Pilot Travel Center is located.

The Illinois Department of Transportation finally flipped the switch on the temporary traffic light hanging above the intersection, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday.

Despite hanging above the

intersection for more than a year, the light was off until Wednesday.

Kopczick said the light is needed to control the increased traffic coming from the Pilot station. He urged caution to residents accustomed to driving through the intersection without looking at the light.

“For a lot of us locals, we are used to just blowing through that intersection without stopping,” Kopczick said. “We want to make everyone aware

that’s not the case anymore.”

The temporary light is managed by IDOT while it makes improvements on the north end of Route 47. Once the roadwork is complete, Kopczick said the city will gain control of the traffic device.

The city intends to upgrade the temporary light to a permanent, aluminum fixture after the city has control, Kopczick added.

“These are cable-strung and considered temporary. They will be replaced,” he said.

Morris man pleads guilty to aggravated robbery

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris man accused of robbing a downtown store at knifepoint has pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony.

Michael Mueller, 18, of Morris was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for robbing Le Mouton Rouge Knittery, 407 Liberty St., on Jan. 31.

According to court records, Mueller threatened a store clerk with a knife and took an

undisclosed amount of cash and an iPod touch.

The judge found the robbery resulted from Mueller’s drug or alcohol use.

Mueller was arrested Feb. 4

by Morris police after a post on the police department’s social media page generated multiple tips.

At the time of the arrest, Mueller was charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said the charge was reduced to a Class 1

felony because Mueller lacked a criminal history, and because Mueller was recommended to receive drug and alcohol treatment.

Those convicted of a Class 1 felony remain eligible for drug and alcohol treatment while incarcerated, Helland said.

“Our main goal here is to protect the downtown business district,” Helland said. “We feel the Morris downtown is an asset to the community. ... We’ve got to protect the downtown community to make sure it remains a safe place to be.”

MORRIS – District 54 officials have added money to the district’s education fund balance despite four years of declining revenue.

The annual audit by Mack and Associates showed the district’s education fund had an ending balance that increased by more than $200,000.

The board voted unanimously to approve both the annual audit and the fiscal 2015 budget at its regular board meeting last week.

“Our goal has been to keep as many teachers in front of the children as possible,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said Wednesday. “We’ve been able to do this by saving money in other areas, like decentralizing from the Grundy County Co-op, sharing transportation and moving to a district principal model.”

Last year, the district dealt with a 7.1 percent decline in property tax revenues. The two previous years, it experienced decreases of 5 percent

and 3.8 percent. The district is experiencing a decrease of 3.95 percent from the 2013 local levy, which funds fiscal 2015.

Local industrial values have remained flat, and there has been a steady decline in the value of the market, affecting property tax revenues, said Dave Henderson, former Grundy County assessor who was responsible for assessments during the years experiencing decline.

School districts rely heavily on property tax revenues to operate.

The district continues to operate on a deficit budget, just as it has since 1988. In 1989, it issued working cash bonds and cut programs to make up the difference when the first of 11 failed referendums was voted down.

Despite the deficit budget, the board is moving forward with it’s transition to 1:1 technology. This will require the board to purchase Chromebooks for students in sixth through eighth grade this spring, for implementation in the 2015-16 school year.

Ricardo Del Toro had a hat trick as Morris tied with Geneseo 3-3 on Thursday in Morris. and put it in the empty net to tie the game. He had an open shot with 10:43 remaining, but it went over the goal and, with 3:30 remaining, a shot from the right wing by Del Toro went off the tire of the lower left corner of the goal.

Meanwhile, the Morris defense and goalie Matt Borgstrom turned the Geneseo attack away at every turn, resulting in a tie.

“A tie isn’t a win, but it isn’t a loss, either,” Del Toro said.

“After being behind 3-1 in the first half, we will take a tie. The penalty kick at the end of the first half helped us get some momentum for the second half and we played better in the second half.

“It was a pretty physical game, but it was tough on both sides. It wasn’t out of control or anything. Geneseo played aggressive, but they weren’t dirty.”

“This wasn’t the prettiest game for us,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “We have some injuries [Nick Borgstrom, Connor McGlynn] and there are some bad vibes going around. It was nice to see Ricardo bring us back, which is what a captain should do.

“It was a pretty physical game, but our kids just kept playing through it without complaining. There is a new rule this year that if you get 25 yellow cards as a team, you aren’t invited to the postseason.

We had nine after our first few games, but we haven’t had any since. It’s nice that we have cleaned that up and are just focused on the game.”

MORRIS – With his team trailing, 3-1, late in the first half of a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game against Geneseo on Thurday. Ricardo Del Toro did what a team captain is supposed to do.

He took over.

Geneseo was whistled for a penalty with 1:05 to play, and Del Toro took the penalty kick, shooting it past Maple Leaf goalie Cole Toone to pull Morris (6-52) to within 3-2 at intermission.

“When we got behind, 3-1, I kind of took it upon myself to carry the team,” Del Toro said.

“At halftime, I talked to the team. Kind of yelled at them, actually. I told them we needed to get our focus back.

“Once we concentrated a little more in the second half, we were able to connect on a few more passes on offense and play better. And our defense got better in the second half, too, because we shut them out in the second half. This was definitely a half we can build on.”

Del Toro had scored Morris’ previous goal at the 31:32 mark of the first half, tying the game at 1. Geneseo responded with a goal from Austin Harms just a minute or so later, then Hunter DeSplinter gave the Leafs a 3-1 lead with a goal with 3:18 to play in the first half. It was the last Geneseo goal of the game as the Morris defense stiffened up after that.

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – It all comes down to Saturday night, when the D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midgets trek to Grundy County Speedway for the final time in the 2014 season. The event is the seventh annual Alex Pruett Memorial presented by 3 Wide Life. The race is the third and final leg of the Safety-Kleen Triple Crown that has nine drivers vying for a $750 bonus.

On the STARS season, five drivers have pulled into victory lane. Austin Prock and Kyle Hamilton have each taken home four wins, while Nick Baran, Tyler Baran and Travis Young have earned one win apiece. Hamilton, Prock and Joliet’s Jim Anderson are involved in a three-way tie at the top of the all-time STARS Midget wins list with eight. Going into the final race, Prock has all but sewn up the STARS point title with a 210-point advantage over Tyler Trainor, followed by Ryan Probst, Billy Hulbert, and Nick Baran.

The race honors the life and racing career of Alex Pruett, who passed away in 2007 at the age of 20. Pruett, who was born in Evanston and was a native of Carefree, Arizona, raced from coast-to-coast in series such as USAC, SCRA, PRA, and UMARA, an organization with which he won the Bob Lockard Memorial at Grundy County Speedway in July 2006. Off the track, Pruett was known for his outgoing personality and his fun-loving attitude. He was one of the creators of the popular motorsports show “3 Wide Life.”

Two former winners of the Alex Pruett Memorial are expected to compete in this year’s event. Current STARS Midget point leader, Prock, won the most recent edition in 2013 at Grundy County Speedway. Travis Young, whose car carries sponsorship from 3 Wide Life, took the checkered flag in the inaugural race in 2008.

Baran and Prock are among nine drivers aiming to take the title of Safety-Kleen Triple Crown Champion for 2014. To win the Triple Crown, a driver must win each the Illinois State Championship, Pavement Nationals, and the Alex Pruett Memorial. Hamilton, who did

not compete in the first Triple Crown race put the kibosh on Nick Baran’s bid to sweep all three events when he won at Grundy on Aug. 23. Now, the crowning of the Triple Crown goes to the driver who has the best average finish in each of the three races. After scoring a pair of second-place finishes in the first two Triple Crown events, Prock leads the way

over Nick Baran and Kyle O’Ga- each of whom also had an asra who each have an average sist. Goalie Kevin Klock made 15 saves. finish of 3.5.

us crazy. Why were we losing our minds? The deer were using areas just out of range.

The next time we went out, the same thing happened. We were being stubborn though because we thought we had set up our stands in a good area.

Finally, we had enough, and, after a morning hunt, we took the stands down and moved them 50 yards to the south. We were quite anxious to try out the new location.

As you can guess, the next hunt was a success. The deer were moving right by us now.

It seemed like every whitetail in the county was walking beneath us. It was exciting

and exhilarating to have made such a wise movement.

Who knows why that herd of deer suddenly abandoned what we thought was a prime trail. What we do know, though, is that if we hadn’t moved our stands, there is a good chance we would have just been watching deer without the opportunity to ever pull our bows back.

Game plans are great. They help us prepare and set the tone for a wonderful season.

There is a time, though, that the game plan needs to be forgotten and your instincts should be followed. Good luck to each of you as opening day approaches.

My experience has taught me that, more often than not, a game plan for hunting often needs to be abandoned much sooner than most offensive coordinators in the NFL would recommend. I have found that flexibility and adaptability are the true measures of success when dealing with wild creatures.

Every outdoorsman does their best to pattern their quarry and set up in the perfect place. And many times, this preparation can put you in a position to be successful.

But I think there are just as many instances where adjusting on the fly can be beneficial.

There are so many factors that contribute to the movement and placement of ani-

mals. Whether we are chasing pheasants or whitetails, the weather is probably the top determiner of what type of day we will have. There are times when I wake up and just know that things will be moving and active and other days when I can tell that the woods and fields will be as calm as a forgotten cemetery. With limited time afield each year, how do we adjust our game plan to account for hunts gone awry?

I think the best advice I can give is to follow your natural instincts. Let your internal predator out and try not to overthink what is going on at any given moment. There was one particular whitetail season where my hunting buddy and I had to learn firsthand how important it is to be flexible.

We had set up several stands along a few well-used trails intersecting a large field and a known bedding area.

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this during an NFL game: “Even though they’re in trouble, it’s too early to abandon the game plan.”

It is an interesting quote and idea.

Football teams prepare each week for the next opponent. Part of the preparation includes having a game plan.

How are you going to handle the other teams strengths?

What about how you are going to exploit their weaknesses?

The list of possible preparations is endless. Often during the game, as in life, the plan falls apart. A team might find itself down 21 points in the first quarter, but the announcers will talk about not giving up on the plan.

That same thought process can be applied to the outdoors, especially when hunting. Before a hunter sets foot in the woods, fields, or blinds, they have usually thought out how they are going to approach the hunt, where they are going to set up, the direction of the

Little sympathy for Crundwell Rita Crundwell, Dixon’s disgraced former city comptroller, apparently believes an injustice is about to be visited upon her personal finances.

And the federal prison inmate wants to do something about it.

Crundwell, who pleaded guilty to stealing a mind-boggling $53.7 million from the city of Dixon between 1991 and 2012, does not want her pension accounts to be used to repay the massive restitution bill she owes.

The issue will be front and center during a Chicago federal court hearing next week.

While Crundwell was stealing millions from Dixon taxpayers, a portion of her salary was duly put away into two retirement accounts. The total amount set aside is more than $90,000.

From her prison cell in Waseka, Minnesota, where she is serving a nearly 20year sentence for wire fraud, Crundwell made it clear that she wants that money to be off-limits to the public.

“I wish to object to the inclusion of these funds in the judgment,” Crundwell wrote in a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“I feel these funds should be exempt.”

Crundwell must be looking ahead to the day when she can leave prison a free woman and desires a nice pension to support herself.

However, that won’t happen for quite a while. All her personal needs for years to come will be covered by federal taxpayers.

Meanwhile, Crundwell still owes the city more than $44.4 million in restitution, after the sale of her property and assets netted the city a check for $9.2 million.

Public pensions are the reward for retired public servants who have discharged their duties diligently, faithfully and honestly.

Crundwell’s devious, heartless thefts fit none of those descriptions.

Therefore, let her pension funds be ordered forfeited and awarded to the city.

If the perpetrator of a historic injustice believes herself to be the victim of an injustice, well, that’s just too bad.

She’ll find little sympathy here.

Your online High Holiday rites The idea was really simple, in terms of technology: Since many Jews could not attend High Holiday rites, why not put microphones in key locations and let them listen on their telephones?

It wasn’t as good as being there, but – for shut-ins – it was better than nothing.

Decades later, some Jewish leaders mounted cameras in their packed sanctuaries and let people watch High Holidays rites on video. Again, it wasn’t the same as being there, but it was better than nothing and, certainly, better than listening on a telephone.

Jewish leaders who tiptoed into these technologies “didn’t change what they were doing, they just put a telephone near it,” said Rabbi Robert Barr, founder of Congregation Beth Adam, a 30-year-old independent congregation in Cincinnati, Ohio. “When cameras came along, they just aimed cameras at what they were already doing. They didn’t change anything.”

VIEWS Terry Mattingly Rabbi Laura Baum, who founded OurJewishCommunity.org, stressed that while interactive video is streamed live from the brick-and-mortar Beth Adam sanctuary during the High Holidays, the project’s regular work – from weekly Shabbat services to pastoral care – is unique and totally online. The blogs, podcast collections, YouTube channel, digital libraries and chat rooms are always open, which means the digital doors are never locked.

While the analog Beth Adam congregation has 300 members, Baum and Barr expect between 30,000 and 40,000 people to take part in one or more of the digital High Holidays services this year. Counting this kind of flock is “more of an art than a science,” said Baum, since there is no way to know

how many people are gathered around one computer or mobile device at any one time.

“We thought we’d be reaching young people,” she said. “That’s a key demographic for many synagogues today. ... We know that many young people under the age of 30 or 40 may not join a congregation, but they are obviously very comfortable with technology.”

Truth is, she said, some people prefer to experience community at the level of face-to-face interaction, reverent silence in the pews, congregational singing and hugs from other members.

However, many others prefer the anonymity found online, choosing to spend time in personal, solitary reflection in what they see as a safe environment in which they are allowed to share what they want, when they want and with whom they want.

This full embrace of technology would, of

course, be totally unacceptable for those whose faith is rooted in the traditions of Orthodox Judaism, said Barr. However, the leaders of Congregation Beth Adam are – at every level of doctrine and practice – focusing on an evolving Judaism of the future, not the past.

“We’re trying to make sense out of what this online experience is, what makes it work,” he said.

Instead of using new technology to put the same old services online, “what we are doing is qualitatively different. We’re right in the middle of these changes.

We are living it. ... We’re really trying to redefine what it means to be a community in the first place.”

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post What would it take to make you happy? To experience that emotion truly, deeply, utterly, “as a state of being,” as a character puts it in “Hector and the Search for Happiness”?

If your answer was more money, a new job, better sex or stronger drugs – or maybe reconnecting with your first love, the one who got away – you’re not unlike the film’s title character, a successful but vaguely unsatisfied man who suddenly chucks everything, including his beautiful, adoring girlfriend (played by Rosamund Pike), to go gallivanting around the world in search of something that – surprise! – turns out to have nothing to do with any of that stuff.

Based on a 2002 book by French shrink-turned-popnovelist François Lelord, “Hector” is as light as the

punch line from a “Peanuts” cartoon, despite a sequence in which our hero (Simon Pegg) is kidnapped and beaten by a violent African warlord (Akin Omotoso). Consider yourself warned: Although the trailer makes the movie look like a comedy, it’s less than a laugh riot.

After being released from that cheerful little interlude, Hector is shown skipping down the street as the words “Happiness is feeling completely alive” crawl across the screen. Hector, who carries a notebook everywhere he goes, keeps a running tally of various theories of happiness he has hit upon during his globetrotting “research,” each of which appears as a handwritten scribble on screen, as a way of closing out chapters of the film.

Much of it is about as profound as what you’d find printed on a greeting card,

and one theory is quite crass.

“Happiness could be the freedom to love more than one woman at the same time,” Hector writes, after spending a (chaste) night with a hot Chinese hooker (Ming Zhao), just before she is forcibly removed by her abusive pimp.

Hector’s other encounters include meeting a rich, cynical banker (Stellan Skarsgard); an old friend of Hector’s who has become an aid worker after coming out as gay (Barry Atsma); a ruthless drug lord (Jean Reno) with a mentally ill wife ; a woman dying of cancer (Chantel Herman); and a wise old monk (Togo Igawa).

Just about everyone Hector runs into seems to have some sage advice or life lesson to offer. They’re straight out of Central Casting, not cinéma vérité. Where is the airplane seatmate with body odor and a boring story about a business meeting in Sacramento? Why

is everyone in this movie – except Hector – an enlightened being or a heartless thug?

As naive as the main character is – and he’s almost shockingly unsophisticated for someone who has been to medical school – the movie is even more clueless. There are many scenes where you can see the plot turns coming from a mile away.

There are no surprises here, only blandly reassuring homilies.

Spoiler alert: Happiness has to do with loving others and self-acceptance. If that’s something you have to fly to Shanghai to find out, save yourself the airfare and see this movie instead.

• “Hector and the Search for Happiness” received one-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains obscenity, violence, brief nudity and sensuality.

The film runs 114 minutes.

Good pair of glasses will correct most cases of astigmatism Dear Doctor K: At my last visit, my eye doctor told me I have astigmatism. He told me what that means, but I still don’t really understand what it is. Please explain it to me.

Dear Reader: Astigmatism means that the eye’s cornea has an irregular shape, which causes vision problems. Astigmatism is very common; I am among the several billion people who have it.

Fortunately, it’s easy to correct.

Let’s start with a little eye anatomy. The cornea is the clear, dome-like window at the front of the eye. Rays of light pass through the cornea and then through the lens, which focuses images onto the retina. The retina captures the images, then sends them to the brain via the optic nerve. The cornea is normally round.

In people with astigmatism, the cornea may be shaped like a football or oval. This causes light to scatter instead of focus on a single point as it passes through the cornea.

Blurred vision is the most common symptom of astigmatism.

Some people describe it as double vision but in only one eye. You may develop eyestrain, squinting and headaches from working to

Many people have some degree of astigmatism; in fact, it is rare to find a perfectly formed eye.

Though people are born with astigmatism, it is often not noticed until a child attends school or learns to read. Astigmatism tends to remain stable, but it may slowly worsen over time. An eye doctor can diagnose astigmatism using a standard eye examination.

Glasses are a good, reliable choice for correcting astigmatism.

Patients who prefer contact lenses may be limited to hard contact lenses. Soft lenses are sometimes an option, but they aren’t as effective for severe astigmatism.

Another option is corrective surgery. The most common type used to correct astigmatism is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis).

In LASIK, the doctor makes a small incision on the surface of the eye to create a small flap of tissue, which is lifted up. Then the doctor uses a cool laser beam to correct the irregular shape of

the cornea. Recovery is usually quick and painless.

When LASIK surgery was introduced, I took a wait-and-see attitude. The surgery clearly produced short-term improvement in vision, with minimal risks.

But I was concerned about the possibility that over the longer term the surgery would become less effective, or there would be adverse effects. Today, after nearly 30 years of its use, I’m much more confident in recommending this procedure to my patients.

It’s the unusual person, though, who needs surgery to correct astigmatism. Glasses have always worked for me, as did contact lenses.

I think eyeglasses are one of the most important medical discoveries – right up there with antibiotics, X-rays and vaccines.

So many children and young adults begin to lose clear vision due to myopia, astigmatism and other common eye problems.

Without eyeglasses, society would be much less happy and productive.

Teen challenges drinking age Dr. Wallace: My 19-yearold sister just returned from spending six weeks in Germany to better learn how to read, write and speak the German language. She was in Munich, the Bavarian region of Germany, and she loved every minute of it.

One thing that surprised my sister was that she could visit a beer garden, order a bratwurst sandwich and wash it down with a stein of beer.

You see; the minimum age for consuming alcohol in Germany is 18. My sister said all the American students in this program sponsored by the university were under age 21, but over age 18, and most of them were drinking beer. She said that all of the students behaved themselves and none of them became intoxicated.

Why can’t the United States follow Germany in legalizing our minimum drinking age to 18? Eighteen-year-olds are considered adults in every other way.

I dare you to challenge my reasoning. – Kim, St. Paul, Minnesota Dear Kim: Giving me a dare is a good way to see your letter in print. Every so often I receive a letter such as yours promoting the theory that 18-yearolds are considered adults, but are denied the privilege of consuming an alcoholic beverage, but I’m never convinced that older teens can consume alcohol without consequence.

Germany has one of the highest percentages of teen deaths by automobile accidents in the Western world. The reason is perfectly clear: lax laws about teen drinking.

Even with our strict minimum-drinking-age laws, we have much the same problem in this country. The three

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace leading causes of death among teens are automobile accidents, homicide and suicide, according to Dr. S. Kenneth Schonberg, a professor of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Nearly half of the teens who die in accidents are intoxicated themselves or are in a car driven by someone who is, Dr. Schonberg notes. This fact alone makes alcohol intoxication the leading cause of death among North American teens.

In addition, nearly one-third of teen murder victims are under the influence of alcohol at the time they are killed, Dr. Schonberg says.

Add to this the fact that 20 percent of teens who commit suicide are intoxicated at the time of their death, and one can plainly see that teen alcohol use is anything but consequence-free.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and never been on a date. I don’t really know why.

I’m not bad-looking and I’ve got a decent shape.

The only thing I can think of is that I’m really very bright and a straight-A student. Do you think this can scare guys away from asking me out? – Amber, Indianapolis, Indiana Dear Amber: Your brainpower might be intimidating to a few guys, but that’s not the prime reason you are dateless.

Guys are interested in girls who are interested in guys. So, it’s important that you be friendly, outgoing and even a bit assertive. Don’t sit back and wait.

In yesterday’s column, we saw a deal in which a 4-4 fit was worse than a 6-3 because there was an inevitable trump loser in the 4-4 fit, but those losers could be discarded if it were a side suit.

Today’s deal is another example of one in which the unbalanced fit works better than the balanced, but it is hard to recognize at the table.

After South opens one spade and North raises to two spades, it is tempting for South to rebid three hearts. Perhaps North has raised with three spades and five (or six!) hearts. Here, North would surely raise to four hearts.

Whether South is in four spades or four hearts, West does best to lead his fourth-highest club, guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit (or a most unlikely singleton). East takes the trick as cheaply as possible and continues with his original fourth-highest club, which South ruffs. What happens after that?

In four spades, declarer continues with the diamond king.

West wins and plays a third club. South ruffs, draws two rounds of trumps, cashes the diamond queen, ruffs the diamond three in the dummy, and plays on hearts. Declarer loses only one spade, one diamond and one club.

In four hearts, though, the continued club leads force declarer to ruff twice in his hand, which promotes West’s heart jack to a winner. The defenders take one trick in each suit for down one.
