By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – COPE Animal Rescue was back in front of the Grundy County Land Use Committee on Wednesday with changes to an application to set up a cat shelter in Coal City.

Lois Dyer of Coal City applied to use a home on property she owns at 2625 Jugtown Road to be converted to a shelter for up to 25 cats, which will be housed there until they can be adopted. In July, the committee sent the proposal forward with a positive recommendation.

Land Use Director Heidi Miller said Thursday several people voiced concerns at the August Zoning Board of Appeals meeting and Dyer decided to change the application for a special-use permit to establish a sanctuary instead of a rescue.

Dyer said previously she originally organized COPE in 2003 in Joliet, where she focused on spaying and neutering feral cats, as well as caring for the feral cat population.

The sanctuary will be housed in a three-bedroom home on 5 acres of the 77 acres the family owns, where Dyer lives in another home.

Miller said the request has been amended to ask for a sanctuary versus a shelter, with the goal of finding adoptions for as many of the 25 cats as possible, and providing a safe and comfortable home for those not adopted to live out their natural life.

Miller said when animals are adopted out or die, the sanctuary will not be able to replace them with another cat.

If animals are dropped off, Dyer will work with Animal Control to handle the cats.

Dyer did not return calls Thursday.

• Demetri R. Collins, 19, of Chicago, was arrested Friday by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies on a Grundy County warrant for failure to appear for a charge of retail theft and a LaSalle County warrant for failure to appear for a charge of retail theft.

Kids celebrate Grundy County’s farming legacy at various Corn Fest activities

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Today’s children may grow up surrounded by and using technology, but Patrick and Brenda Soreng of Coal City are making sure their 2-year-old son Liam knows his history.

Farming is woven into the fabric of Grundy County, but even tractors have advanced to the point they are almost incomparable to the models of 50 years ago.

As Liam Soreng sat and pretended Thursday to steer a bright yellow antique Minneapolis-Moline tractor at the First Midwest Bank Farm Fair during the 67th annual Grundy County Corn Festival, his mother said he recently changed her smartphone’s preferred language to Spanish.

It took the Sorengs two days to figure out the hidden setting Liam had adjusted before changing it back to English.

“We’re going to make sure he knows what things were like before this technology,” Brenda Soreng said.

The Minneapolis-Moline tractor stood out among the handful of tractors parked Thursday along the sidewalk of First Midwest Bank in downtown Morris.

Each of the other Farmall tractors, painted red, were in pristine condition, but the yellow popped in the afternoon sun.

The Sorengs were enjoying Liam’s second Corn Fest, walking west on Main Street after seeing the petting zoo and pony rides hadn’t opened at their scheduled time at noon. There was little foot traffic between noon and 1 p.m., as most people found lunch.

The light traffic was ideal, Brenda Soreng said, because they’d rather take Liam to Corn Fest when there are fewer people. Her favorite part of Corn Fest is getting kettle corn.

Others, like 4-year-old Tameron Gooch of Morris, didn’t care about food – all he wanted to do was experience the petting zoo, according to his father, Dale Gooch.

“I’ve asked him if he wants to eat or get a drink,” he said.

“He says, ‘No, I want to see the petting zoo. I want to ride the horses.’ ”

The Gooches walked up and down Main Street, checking out the Farm Fair tractors before heading back to the petting zoo at the corner of Franklin and Main streets.

The petting zoo didn’t open until about 1:30 p.m.

“There was a miscommunication,” Dale Gooch said. “The farm thought they were supposed to be here at 1 p.m., but the Corn Fest booklet said 12 p.m. So Tameron has waited about 90 minutes.”

As the animals were transferred from trailers to their gated areas in the parking lot, the crowd grew larger.

District 54 meetings to use live streaming

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After running tests on live streaming in May, Morris Grade School District 54 board meetings now are available online to watch at home.

On Monday the board approved the purchase of about $1,500 worth of equipment to stream meetings online for the public, despite Superintendent Teri Shaw not recommending the purchase.

“We went to Ted Lemmy with Unified Concepts in May and asked what he had to live stream the meetings,” school board President Jerry White said Thursday. “This is something the board wanted to do, and we had an agreement to purchase the equipment through him.”

Both Shaw and White agree the board’s initial try at streamlining was less than stellar, and that board members were hard to hear or understand on the video.

Shaw said with the budget deficit the district is facing, she felt the district would be better off finding a less costly alternative to stream board meetings.

The district hired an in-

house IT director for the 201516 school year after the overwhelming response from staff favored having a director on hand, Shaw said in July.

Shaw worked with the new internal IT director to develop a streaming option that cost the district about $150, primarily using existing district equipment.

“With $150 in equipment we have on hand we were able to provide an internal solution that seemed like a better alternative,” Shaw said.

White said he thought the district had been continuously using the equipment provided by Lemmy that was approved Monday night for purchase.

“The picture quality and sound quality got better,” he said.

Shaw said it got better because of upgrades purchased in-house.

She said an added benefit of the district using the in-

house equipment is that it could be set up on a cart for use in other parts of the building for streaming events such as school concerts.

The equipment the board approved to purchase can only be used in the board room.

White said he feels the board gave their word to Lemmy that they would buy the equipment, and voting to approve it was the right thing to do after such a long amount of time it’s been in the district’s possession.

College students make case for MAP funding Those at risk urge lawmakers to pass budget before universities lose people

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Nicole Berard told a committee of Illinois lawmakers Thursday her enrollment at Joliet Junior College this spring will be in jeopardy if they don’t approve a state budget that funds tuition assistance for low-income college students.

Berard, who is studying special education at JJC, is among the 130,000 low-income students statewide who receive funding from Illinois’ Monetary Award Program to help pay for education. The funding has become entangled in Springfield’s budget impasse, which is in its third month.

Thursday’s Illinois Senate Higher Education Committee hearing in Joliet was one of three scheduled across the

state designed so students could tell lawmakers about the impasse’s effect on their educations.

“The MAP grant, to me, plays a key role. If I lost that, it would be really rough. I don’t think I could continue my education,” Berard told committee members. “I’m working my two jobs right now trying to pay for everything, to pay bills, to provide for my younger sister. And it’s a lot for me.”

College leaders from JJC, University of St. Francis and Lewis University in Romeoville said Thursday the institutions have so far “floated the money” to students eligible for MAP funding for the fall semester.

But without state appropriations, that won’t be feasible for much longer, and could hurt spring enrollment, said Raymond Kennelly, senior

vice president for strategic enrollment management, marketing and planning at Lewis University.

“One of the challenges that we will eventually confront is, if the dollars do not arrive, we have a true cash flow challenge,” Kennelly said.

He said institutions would then have two choices: go to families and ask that they pay – in some instances – thousands more in tuition, or attempt to fill the financial gap with “dramatic” midyear budget adjustments achieved through staffing and service cuts.

The cost to Lewis is about $6 million over two semesters, he said. USF President Arvid Johnson said university officials have floated about $1.2 million to students for the fall semester.

If spring arrives without appropriations, that will jump to about $2.5 million, he said.

JJC President Debra Daniels said nearly 950 students at JJC eligible for MAP funding are attending the school this fall, she said.

“The state funding problem should not be on the shoulders of students who are striving to receive an education,” she said. “The state is putting at risk our most at-risk population.”

Daniels said the state budget impasse also has tied up funding for the college’s adult education and literacy class options. If nothing is done, those classes will be reduced, leading to staff layoffs.

Corn Festival Coloring Contest winners announced

A good person and a good artist Joliet artist shows off two-sided sculpted artwork in two exhibits

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several months ago, Chris Zurales asked Morris artist Margie Glass Sula for suggestions for the Shirley Oberwortmann Community Art Wall at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Sula recommended her friend and former Joliet Junior College classmate Pedro Palacios, 33, of Joliet.

Zurales, relations coordinator the Joliet medical center, said he doesn’t know much about art but Palacios’ sculpt- Pedro e d r e l i g i o u s Palacios and immigration-themed pieces appealed to him. Palacios’ exhibit will remain in place through Oct. 16.

“It catches the eye right away,” Zurales said of Palacios’ art. “It has this almost dark appearance to it, but when you look closer, it’s very positive and uplifting. It has a juxtaposed feeling to it.”

Sula, an adjunct art teacher at JJC who met Palacios about 15 years ago, is impressed with Palacios’ growth as an artist and his dogged determination at fighting the lingering side effects from childhood brain cancer.

“He’s very strong and a hard worker,” Sula said. “He’s always very positive and looking to make things better.”

Palacios also has created a 3-by-2 foot sculpture for the Day of the Dead exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. The exhibit

will be up through Dec. 13, according to its website.

Most of Palacios’ artwork is a combination of wood sculpture and acrylic paint, with the occasional addition of mixed media. He no longer works in oils because of their extended drying time. He enjoys the ease of sculpting with wood and modifying found objects – such as medallions – to fit his pieces.

“Some of the things I make, we have a love-hate [relationship],” Palacios said. “It’s very tiring and hard on me sometimes, but I just have to do it.”

Nearly all the art reflects Palacios’ two loves – religious themes and immigration rights.

“No. 1, I’m Catholic,” Palacios said. “I know a lot about immigrants. I like their stories of coming here to the United States to better themselves and have a better life for their children.”

No stranger to challenge – or sincerity

For Palacios, life is precious. He was 9 when he suddenly became violently ill. His doctor, concerned with the projectile vomiting, immediately sent Palacios for blood work and a CT scan.

The scan showed a mass, which was diagnosed as cancer. Palacios was scheduled for surgery to remove part of his cerebellum and brain stem, but his prognosis was poor.

“I was given six months to live,” he said.

As he recovered, Palacios dabbled in art and later took art classes at Bolingbrook High School.

Elizabeth Fink, lawyer for Attica inmates, dies

By MICHAEL VIRTANEN The Associated Press ALBANY, N.Y. – Elizabeth Fink, a New York lawyer who helped state inmates win a $12 million settlement three decades after the bloody 1971 prison riot in Attica, has died.

She was 70.

Fink died of cardiac arrest Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, said her brother, Larry Fink.

Elizabeth Fink sued state authorities over the force used to retake control of Attica Correctional Facility from inmates. Troopers and guards fatally shot 29 inmates and 10 hostages, and prisoners who had rioted five days earlier and taken control of part of the prison were beaten and tortured.

“It took 27 years,” she told The Associated Press last year.

“It was not a lot of money.”

The federal class-action lawsuit was tried in 1991 in Buffalo.

An appeals court overturned the jury verdicts for

the prisoners for violations of their civil rights.

The settlement was reached in 2000.

Attorney Jonathan Gradess called Fink’s efforts “heroic.” He represents families of killed and injured hostages who got a $12 million state settlement in 2005.

Both groups still seek two more things – full disclosures of what happened and apologies from the state, he said.

“In essence, what she did was bring to light something that the state wanted to bury: that there was torture inflicted on prisoners in the aftermath of the violent retaking.”

Gradess said.

Fink worked on other prominent civil rights cases and represented criminal defendants, including difficult cases other lawyers avoided, said former colleague Sarah Kunstler.

“She believed standing between a client and the crushing weight of government power was a political act,” she said.

Morris loses tough match to Yorkville

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If ESPN were to expand its coverage to high school girls volleyball, Thursday night’s match between Morris and Yorkville would soon be aired as an Instant Classic.

The Redskins and Foxes battled toe-to-toe in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East battle, with Yorkville emerging with a 22-25, 25-21, 25-23 win.

Both teams played excellent volleyball, with very few unforced errors all night. Players on both sides were hitting the floor with regularity, trying to keep points alive. In the end, however, it was Yorkville that had a few more points.

“This was a great match,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “I told the girls afterward that I feel like we won it. It was that close, and we played that well. It was just a few balls that went the wrong way.

“Our girls played all-out and played with a lot of heart.

Our energy was very good. Before the match, we are usually having fun, but the girls were very serious tonight.”

The Redskins (6-12, 1-2) needed to be serious to contend with the Yorkville twin towers of 6-foot-3 Katie Nolan and 6-2 Jordan Albarran. The duo combined for 26 kills in leading the Foxes to the win.

Meanwhile, Morris had 33 kills from Kaylin Korte and eight from Janelle Brehm.

Korte also had 16 digs, while Brehm had eight and Corrinne Day added nine. Calleen Soper had two kills for Morris, with Ryan Friend delivering three blocks and Veronica Johnson two. Addison Polite had 22 assists and Ashley Hood had 19.

Morris jumped ahead early in the first set, taking a 4-1 lead. Yorkville tied the score at 9 before Morris scored four straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The Redskins never trailed again in the set and won, 25-22.

Morris led, 1-0, in the second set, but didn’t lead after that as Yorkville went ahead 5-2 and never let up. Morris closed to within 17-15, but never got any closer, setting up

the pivotal third set.

The third featured ties at 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 before Morris went ahead 9-6 on an ace by Day. Yorkville rallied to take an 11-9 lead before Morris tied it at 12. Yorkville then opened up an 18-15 lead, only to see Morris go ahead, 22-20. Yorkville, however, scored five of the final six points to end the match.

“Yorkville is a very tough team,” Lafond said. “And our girls showed that they can compete with them. We really played as a team tonight. That wasn’t only the six players on the floor. Everyone on the bench was up and cheering for

the girls on the floor. It was a complete team effort.

“I did think that Kaylin really stepped up huge tonight.

She was talking to everyone and getting everywhere on the court. She had to adjust her attack because of how they were blocking her, but that’s what makes her special. She can see that and make the changes. I also thought Janelle Brehm had a very good match and Corrinne Day has done a great job since stepping in as our libero. This team is learning to control the game and the pace and they are becoming much tougher players.”

What a beautiful week it has been. Perfect fall weather.

Warm days followed by crisp evenings just make me smile.

I was so fortunate to be part of a field trip with a bunch of students to an outdoors education camp in the middle of this glorious week.

The goal of the outing was to instill a sense of team and build friendships. Each year, hundreds of kids swarm into the building where I work.

They come from a variety of elementary schools. When they walk into the doors of my school in the fall, they may or may not see many of their friends.

Creating a sense of family is important to the atmosphere of the building. The key to this outing is the universal fact that the outdoors creates an environment for fun and learning.

As the buses pull into the camp, the kids are glued to the windows, anxious to see what waits for them. Trees surround the grounds to create

an illusion of seclusion even though we are smack in the middle of the urban sprawl.

The youngsters unload, line up and wait for directions.

I smile, knowing what an amazing day they are about to have.

Camp counselors step forward and take manageable sized groups off to their first activities.

I get to wander from group to group and witness the kids tackle the many challenges that have been prepared for them.

The activities stress the importance of thinking, communicating and working together. In fact, the obstacles cannot be overcome as individuals. Cooperation is the only recipe for success in this outdoors course.

It is so interesting to watch the kids discuss, debate and even sometimes argue over what to do. They lift and wrestle with boards, trying to get from one stone to another without touching the ground,

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers they help each other up and over a wall, they struggle, contemplate and succeed.

There are times of frustration, moments of elation and lots of trial and error. It is heartwarming to see the kids pick each other up.

Their sense of empathy surfaces and in many situations it helps them coax a team member who may have given up to try just one more time.

I have witnessed this field trip do some amazing things for kids. They talk about it throughout the year and we often refer to the outing in all of our classes, especially when group work becomes tense and tempers flare.

The outdoors provides such a great setting for team building. The gentle breeze and blue sky promote working

The flocks of blackbirds open up discussions of teamwork, and the children spend the day unplugged from electronic distractions.

During lunch, the students are able to eat together under a pavilion. As they finish, groups of kids get up and continue to play and interact with each other while waiting for the afternoon’s activities to proceed.

Some play a game of tag.

Others can be seen squatting around some insect in the grass, observing it, others just chill out under the sun and enjoy the company of a classmate.

New students make friend-

ships, old friends build memories and teachers get to watch nature bring them together.

After a few fast-paced hours, the kids line up and march back to the buses. The ride home is a always quieter from this challenge course.

A full day of fresh air makes for sleepy heads and tired smiles. As we unload back at school, I take pride in the fact the outdoors helped to create some lasting friendships that only Mother Nature can nurture.

Enjoy our fall weather. We did.

When you play bridge, keeping some statistics is not a bad idea. In a duplicate, for example, note how many times your opponents are going down.

If a lot, you are not doubling enough.

When you are on opening lead, how often do you make the best start? You must treat this one carefully, because some “best opening leads” are hard to find.

You are West, on lead after that Stayman auction. Which card would you choose?

From the auction you learned that dummy has four spades. Without a major, he wouldn’t have used Stayman; and with four hearts, he would have raised his partner’s suit.

However, it is probably best to lead a spade, despite dummy’s having four.

You hope partner has a useful doubleton; preferably king- or ace-doubleton, but ten-doubleton might be enough.

The layout of your dreams exists in this deal. But note that you must “forget” the textbook advice to lead the top of three touching honors. If you choose the queen, you irreparably block the suit. When an opponent is known to have four-card length, lead fourth-highest; here, the three. Presumably declarer will play low from the dummy. Your partner will win with his king and return the suit. Since declarer cannot get nine tricks without playing on diamonds, you defeat the contract.

Finally, note that if a psychic declarer calls for dummy’s ace at trick one, hope partner unblocks the king.

If he does, sign him up as your bridge partner for life.
