Morris gets good feedback on audit

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris received Tuesday a positive review on its fiscal 2014-15 audit in a Finance and Administration Committee meeting.

Third-party auditor Bill Crawford informed the committee of the review, Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday. The committee made a recommendation that the council accept the audit at its next meeting scheduled for Oct. 5.

“We’ve done well,” Kopczick said. “We’ll hopefully be looking even better when Costco gets into our EAV. It will help increase our property tax base.”

The city is fresh off approving an annexation agreement with Costco, which will bring 140 acres into city limits and provide upward of 155 well-paying jobs in 2017 when the company plans to open a 256,000-square-foot meat processing facility adjacent to its distribution depot off Route 47.

The city will see an enhanced property tax base in coming years, based on a property tax abatement agreement between Costco and multiple taxing bodies.

Exact numbers won’t be known until the property is assessed, but if Costco opens the plant in 2017, it will pay 25 percent of the assessed value in 2019, 50 percent in 2020, 75 percent in 2021 and 100 percent in 2022, Kopczick said.

“We’ll begin to notice an uptick,” he said. “Something that was never there before.”

In other news, the City Council approved Monday night a request by Morris Police Chief Brent Dite to upgrade sidearms for department personnel.

The department has been using its current ammunition about eight years and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find, Deputy Chief John Severson said. The department also has found it to be more expensive because it’s harder to find.

Severson said other local agencies, such as the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, all use another, more modern type of ammunition and upgrading the sidearms to that type would allow Morris police to share ammunition with other agencies if it were ever necessary.

The cost to upgrade the sidearms is just less than $10,000, Dite said Wednesday.

Fire caused by faulty heater at medical marijuana facility

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a fire at a medical marijuana cultivation center in Dwight.

Dwight Fire Chief Paul Johnson said crews responded about 3:40 p.m. to PharmaCann Cultivation Center and found a fire in the northwest corner of one of the cultivation rooms in the 20,000-square-foot greenhouse.

“The fire was caused by a malfunction in a gas heater, and there was a gas line involved,” Johnson said. “We

had it controlled in the first five minutes.”

He said the greenhouse is in the final stages of construction, and there wasn’t any marijuana at the location of the fire.

“The fire was unintentional and not due to or related in any way to the cultivation of cannabis,” Johnson said. “It’s no different than if it were to happen at a warehouse.”

Johnson estimated the damage at about $20,000, but said the fire district has not yet been in contact with the owners.

A construction worker was treated and released by first responders at the scene.

And each year at the Grundy County Corn Festival, staff from local districts and departments take their fight to the streets, where they battle using fire hoses to get a barrel past their opponent to take home bragging rights in the annual water fight contest.

“You see everyone you know each year,” Charlie Boyd, Braidwood Fire Protection District safety officer, said Wednesday night before the water fights began on Washington Street in Morris.

“It’s a family reunion,” added Tim Nance, a Plainfield firefighter participating with Braidwood Fire Protection District for the water fights.

Boyd, who has been involved in water fights for 44 years, said there is a method to the madness that many who come out to watch probably don’t understand.

He said the idea is to get the weight off the pulley that attaches the barrel to the line.

He said once the weight is off the pulley, a steady stream can knock the barrel back over the opposing teams head, leading to victory.

The sidewalks were packed three and four people deep with spectators and younger water visitors stood in the empty parking stalls hoping to get wet from the fireman’s advancing hoses.

“We come out every year to watch the fights. It’s become a tradition, a way to start off Corn Festival,” visitor Jamie Bryant said. “The kids really enjoy getting wet and seeing the firefighters up close.”

Among the spectators are often the spouses, children and parents of the firefighters.

Shouts can be heard to “go, go, go!” as their loved ones push the barrel back.

“It’s a fun event for the public to see,” said Scott Swanson, Morris firefighter and referee for the water fights. “It’s a tradition and a way to have fun with neighboring districts.”

Just like any family, firefighters often step up for one another. Some firefighters battle for more than one district to make sure there are enough people for everyone to compete.

As long as they aren’t the nozzle operator for the neighboring team, they can still compete with their own team.

Students gather for national prayer event

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A group of students gathered Wednesday morning in front of Morris Community High School and joined hands as they circled the flagpole. Then, they bowed their heads in prayer for the students and staff inside and the community around them.

Alexa Rain and Luke Holliday led the prayer, just as they do each week in the school cafeteria where they meet with others for a prayer group.

“We went to a Christian youth group in Michigan this summer,” Rain said. “They gave us a card with a task to do; it might be to feed a Thanksgiving meal to the homeless or some other task. We both got the same card that said to start a prayer group at school.”

That card has grown to a reality since the second week of school, when they approached the administration and asked to hold the group.

“It was received very well.

We talked to Mr. Hussey and got two teachers to supervise,” Holliday said.

The group typically meets Tuesday morning before school, but they moved to Wednesday this week to participate in the national See You at the Pole event, which was created in 1990 as a global day of student prayer.

Proceeds to benefit Special Connections of Grundy County; also has kids runs

At 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at Goold Park in Morris, participants will get in their stance and cross the starting line in costumes, if they so choose.

“We’re hoping to appeal to a broader mass audience with the costume theme,” Special Connections of Grundy County Executive Director Kelly Thompson said.

This is the fourth year Special Connections has teamed up with the Morris Police Department to host the event.

All proceeds will go to Special Connections, a nonprofit that serves people with disabilities in Grundy County and surrounding areas.

Starting from Goold Park, the course is paved, fast and flat. The last half-mile is slightly downhill, providing a welcome finish.

The course distance is USA Track & Field certified, and the race is chip timed. There will be food, music and fun, Thompson said.

“It’s a well-run race on a nice course,” Thompson said.

“We’ve received a lot of compliments on it. It’s also a great time of year when it comes to weather.”

The cost is $25 a person, and participants can register at www.specialconnections.org as an individual or group.

Trophies will be awarded for several age brackets, starting at 8 and younger. After the 5K, there will be an 800-meter kids dash to encourage young people to be active, Thompson said.

Those who register by Oct. 1 are guaranteed a T-shirt commemorating the event.

Race day registration begins at 8 a.m. and closes at 9:30 a.m.

Highway agencies drop Illiana appeal

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the state agency is following the Federal Highway Administration’s lead by voluntarily dismissing its appeal of a recent court decision that ruled the federal government’s approval of the Illiana Expressway project invalid.

“The project remains on indefinite hold,” Guy Tridgell, spokesman for IDOT, said in an email Wednesday.

Doug Hecox, spokesman for the FHA, confirmed Wednesday the administration’s decision to voluntarily dismiss its appeal but declined to comment further.

“No, we’re not offering any comment. [The agency does not] comment on litigation,” he said.

In a news release, the Chicago-based Environmental Law & Policy Center – a major opponent of the $1.3 billion proposed tollway project – said the FHA’s reversal means the Illinois Department of Transportation’s and Indiana Department of Transportation’s “fundamentally flawed” environmental impact statement process “must start over and use much more realistic data.”

The court had ruled a critical piece in the FHA’s record of decision – handed down late last year – was “arbitrary and capricious” and violated federal environmental law because the environmental impact study “did not substantiate the purpose and need” for the tollway project. The court ruled the study was based on a faulty “no build” analysis and failed to consider alternatives.

The proposed 47-mile tollway would connect Interstate 55 in Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana. Supporters have said the tollway would relieve traffic congestion on Interstate 80 south of Chicago and create much-needed jobs. Critics – including the ELPC – say it’s financially risky.

John Greuling, president and CEO for the Will County Center for Economic Development, declined to comment until he learned more about the administration’s decision and its impact on the project.

Young Professionals Network donates time to We Care SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Several members of the Young Professionals Network volunteered their time over two days to help in We Care of Grundy County’s clothes closet.

Volunteers included: Christine Mendez, (events director for the Grundy Chamber of Commerce,) Ryan Wilkinson (Northwestern Mutual Wilkinson) and Zack Hajduk (Zack’s Holiday Lighting).

We Care has been in the process of transitioning the clothes closet from summer to winter apparel. Donations of winter clothing have been kept in storage throughout the summer.

“It is a very-labor intensive process to do the seasonal change outs,” We Care Executive Director Eric Fisher said, “and we really appreciate YPN for reaching out to us to help.”

We Care opened the clothes closet after moving into its new building at 530 Bedford Road in Morris. The clothes closet is open to all residents of Grundy County who fall in the 20 percent of poverty or below. People may utilize the clothes closet once a month and can take two bags of clothing per person in their house hold. The clothes closet is used by approximately 200 families per month.

We Care is in need of volun-

teers to help out in the clothes closet and welcomes groups of volunteers such as the Young Professionals Network to help on special projects.

“Our group is looking for ways to give back to the community,” said Christine Mendez, “We reached out to We Care, who said that they have an ongoing need for volunteers in their clothes closet.

YPN was grateful to have the opportunity to give our time to help We Care.”

The Young Professionals Network is an organization made up of young professionals in their 20s and 30s from businesses around the greater Grundy County area. These motivated men and women possess a common interest in developing a social and business network to enhance our community through working with its citizens and the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce. Their goal is to promote and maintain the area as an exciting and enticing place to live, work and grow.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, clothing, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Virginia Mae (Johnson) Leach, age 83, of Morris, passed away peacefully in her home with her family at her bedside on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015.

Born in Newark, Illinois on Nov. 29, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Grace (Johnson) Johnson.

Raised on the family farm and a graduate of Newark High School, Virginia married Donald Leach in Newark on May 30, 1953. The couple made their home in Mazon before moving to Morris in 1976. They have two children, Michael Leach of Channahon and Patricia (Duane) Perryman of Kennesaw, GA. Virginia worked for several years for XL Bannon Radio before working as a bookkeeper at Walker Sales in Morris, where she retired in 1994.

Virginia enjoyed reading, and she loved to shop whenever she could.

She leaves behind her husband and two children; five grandchildren, Laura and Jenna Leach, Megan Steele, Donica Sokolinski, and Shannon Steele; along with four great-grandsons, Trevor Sokolinski, ‘Bela,’ Miles and Sullivan Olsen; and one great-great-grandson, Elijah.

Also surviving is her loving sister, Ann Wagner of Oswego.

Preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Janice Yost.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris.

Bertha L. McMillin, age 87, of Coal City passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born July 8, 1928, in Coal City, Bertha Laurine was a daughter of the late Henry Jacob and Ida Molly Facinelli-Marketti. She was a graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1946, and on Nov. 16, 1947, Bertha married Mack Edwin McMillin in St. Peters Lutheran Church in Coal City.

After high school, and prior to starting her family, Bertha worked at Bailey Hardware and Printing where she initially learned accounting. After her daughters went to school she then returned back to work at Coal City Courant. Bertha later spent ten years in payroll with Barnard & Burke at Peoples Gas, and went on to retire after holding employment with the Coal City Public Library.

Bertha was a thirty year member of the St. Peters Lutheran Church in Coal City, before joining New Hope where she was a member for forty years. In 2003 she joined the Coal City United Methodist Church, and as an active church member throughout her life, Bertha enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She was a longtime member of the Junior League which pioneered the kindergarten in Coal City, and continued to enjoy meeting with the members of the group.

Bertha also volunteered and delivered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Bertha loved the Chicago Cubs, and as an avid Cubs fan, she could always be found taking stats during the games. She enjoyed cooking, reading, needlework, puzzles, number games and dominos. Bertha took great pleasure in traveling, and enjoyed many memorable trips to Door County.

She will most be remembered for her love of family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Kristine (Fred) Davidson of Coal City, Karen McMillin (Emily Gage) of Oak Park; special nieces, Monica (Cragg) Burgess of Goose Lake and Jan Walker of Morris; five grandchildren, Valarie (Tom) Berger

of Racine, WI, Amy (Dave) Fowler of Romeoville, Ann (David) Droge of Russellville, KY, Patty (Dan) Rodwick of Jefferson City, MO, Paul McMillin Gage of Oak Park; nine great grandchildren, Kayla, Rebecca, Austin, Lauryn, Ryan, Carter, Abigail, Samantha, and Jacob; many special nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as a special cousin, Dee Provance of Diamond and a host of wonderful friends.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mack on Sept. 2, 2013; infant son, Paul Harold; one sister, Henrietta (Pat) Mallaney; and one brother, Marcus (Ann) Marketti.

Diane was an active member of the Joliet and Morris Invitational Racing Pigeon Clubs, which she enjoyed with her husband and many friends.

She enjoyed fishing, especially in her backyard lake, shopping, vacationing in Florida, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.

She was the true spirit of Christmas, a soulful chef, animal lover, and thrived in the outdoors. Above everything, she was a faithful partner, trusted friend, doting mother, and proud grandmother, lovingly known as Grandma Peaches. Her boundless excitement, infectious laugh, selfless nature, and loving heart will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mansoina Bewaja, the nurses of Joliet Area Community Hospice, especially her nurse, Linda, and her caretakers, Kelly, Crystal, and Karsyn of Absolute Home Care Plus, for the care, attention, and love they gave.

Morris Theatre Guild holds annual meeting MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Morris Theatre Guild Inc. held its annual general membership meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Morris Theatre Guild, located at the west end of Illinois Avenue in Morris, to elect members to the Board of Directors.

Re-elected to the board were Annie Kowalczyk, Judy Miller and Jim Welch, all from Morris. Katie Stroup of Morris was elected as a new board member.

Truancy summit convened by office of education SUBMITTED REPORT YORKVILLE – The Grundy-Kendall Regional Office of Education presented a truancy summit Sept. 17 at the Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville.

More than 110 counselors, social workers, nurses, attendance secretaries, administrators, probation officers and court-appointed advocates attended the half-day event.

Regional Superintendent Christopher Mehochko welcomed the attendees and moderated the event, which he said was held to share the best practices of individual school districts and communities.

A panel representing 10 area schools shared what’s working for them in reducing truancy. Useful remedies included detentions during lunch; visits to homes if the parents don’t respond; incentives for improving schoolwide attendance; and if youth were truant last year, sending letters to parents even before the new school year starts. Educating parents and doctors of

the rules for excused and unexcused absences also has been helpful. Assistant Regional Superintendent Shelley Senffner explained what schools need to bring to truancy hearings for chronic truants.

Brenda Karales, assistant state’s attorney of Kendall County, was the keynote speaker at the summit. She congratulated those in attendance for the work that they do and said, “It is hard work sometimes, but when we all work together, it can be done.”

Karales said that when truant cases are referred to the state’s attorney office, youth first go to a court diversion program that involves counseling and drug testing among other compliance terms. If the court diversion doesn’t improve school attendance, Karales said that she needs good records of communication with parents and copies of doctor notes so she can take the case to court; penalties that could result from going to court include fines, suspended driver’s license, and being referred to DCFS.

The 1960 graduation class of Morris Community High School met at the Eagles Hall on the evening of Sept. 11 for an “ice breaker.” On the morning of Sept. 12, some members met for golf while others had a lunch on the porch of Nettle Creek Country Club. Later, others attended the Cruise Night in downtown Morris, followed by a dinner at the Morris Country Club. They met again at the Morris Country Club the following morning for breakfast. Morris looking to trip up Yorkville

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Last season, the Morris football team suffered consecutive one-point overtime losses to Sterling and Yorkville.

Those losses were tough for the Redskins to take, and they exacted a bit of revenge last week in a 38-21 win over the previously undefeated Sterling.

This week, the rematch with Yorkville is on tap for Friday night, and coach Alan Thorson feels his players will be ready.

“We’ve had a good week of practice,” Thorson said. “Last week was a big win for us and it gave us some confidence.

What I like about this group is that they are confident, but they know they still need to keep working. There’s a big difference between being confident and being cocky, and our guys haven’t crossed over into cocky.

“There’s no need for motivation for these guys. Every year, if you lost to a team the year before, you want to beat them. With Yorkville, it was the way we lost and the fact that they are a close rival. Any time two schools this close to each other play, they are going to become rivals and it’s a big game for both schools.”

Morris enters the game with a 3-1 record and is currently ranked No. 10 in the most recent Illinois AP Class 4A rankings.

Yorkville is 2-2. The Foxes lost their season opener to Plano, 28-14, before beating Sandwich, 40-14, and Rochelle, 37-6.

They lost to Kaneland, 35-7, a week ago.

“This is the type of game where you throw the records out,” Thorson said. “They want to beat us and we want to beat them. They have won the last couple of years, so we want to right the ship and get back to where we’re beating Yorkville.”

The Foxes will give the Redskins a different test than Sterling did last week. Sterling’s game was based on speed, while Yorkville is a more bulky, physical team.

There’s no way Jay Cutler starts Sunday So let’s talk about the worstkept secret in the NFL. Asked Wednesday if Jay Cutler has been ruled out at quarterback for the Bears on Sunday, Bears coach John Fox responded, “No. He’s taking it day to day. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. We don’t rule anybody out for games until Friday.”

There are two reasons Cutler absolutely will be out Sunday.

The first is, hamstrings don’t heal quickly or easily, and because Cutler’s hammy was bad enough three days ago to send him straight to the showers before the first half was over, there’s no way he will be miraculously healed four days from now.

Remember former coach Marc Trestman’s first year when Cutler suffered a serious groin injury in a 45-41 loss to the Redskins that was thought to be at least a four- to six-week injury and Trestman tried to bring him back early. Cutler clearly was limited and ended up injuring an ankle that cost him another month.

The second is, even if Fox and Cutler can somehow get the Lord himself to lay hands on the back of Jay’s right thigh and miraculously heal him, he still needs to sit. If he starts Sunday, the popular perception and most likely the fact would be that Cutler’s hammy really wasn’t that bad in the first place and he just quit after the pick. I don’t believe that for a second, but I promise you that will be the narrative should Cutler start in Seattle.

So let’s turn our attention to Jimmy Clausen, who will be the starter against Seattle.

I don’t blame Fox for not wanting the Seahawks to know they don’t have to deal with Cutler, particularly because Clausen offers none of the mobility or athleticism that Cutler does, but consider this answer when Fox was asked if he thought Clausen had a good training camp and preseason to prepare him for the start.

“Anybody we pick on the 53-man roster did something right,” Fox said. “He’s part of that.”

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush I’m not making this stuff up folks, that’s the coach’s unedited response, and the biggest problem with it is it’s not true.

Clausen showed nothing in the preseason or camp to suggest he’s up to the task, and, in fact, there’s nothing in his entire body of work to give Bears fans comfort. In five years in the NFL, Clausen is 1-10 as a starter and has appeared in 18 games. His completion percentage is 53.2, he’s thrown five touchdowns, 11 interceptions and has a passer rating of 60.0.

Clausen is the Bears’ backup because beating out Shane Carden, Pat Devlin and Zac Dysert was a little less difficult than throwing a football into Lake Michigan from the Oak Street Beach.

Nonetheless, Clausen told us immediately after the Cardinals game that he’s ready.

“I feel good. I feel good with the offense. I feel good where we’re at. We just have to watch the tape, clean up the things we did wrong and keep getting better on the things we did right.

Just move past this game and get ready for Seattle.”

Nonetheless, it seemed prudent I take one more crack at Fox, just in case Clausen doesn’t stir the memories of Steve Young, Brett Favre or even Cutty on Sunday in Seattle, so I asked if he thought David Fales was ready if need be after all his missed time in training camp and relative inexperience?

Fox said, “He’s probably about as caught up as most third quarterbacks in this league are.”

Clearly not an answer to my question, and, again, pretty clearly not the facts, but what are you going to do? Is it me or is the Bears’ new coach getting testy before the real flames have even started to heat up?

Some deals are tougher than others. This one is well up the scale. You are West. You lead a trump against four hearts. When that dummy appears, how would you hope to collect four tricks?

Duplicate players these days (sensibly) treat a jump raise in competition as pre-emptive: four-card support but a weak hand.

With at least game-invitational values, they cue-bid the overcaller’s suit; here, bidding two spades.

Count the points. Dummy has 11, you have 13, and declarer had enough to go to game. Clearly, your partner, East, has few values. He cannot hold the spade king or club ace, unless South has taken a gamble.

So, you should hope to take these four tricks: two spades, one diamond and one club. But to get those spade winners, you might need partner to lead the suit through declarer.

South draws trumps and plays a diamond. Rise with your ace and exit safely with a diamond.

Declarer will take his tricks there and play a club to his ace. You must be ready – sacrifice the king under the ace. Then East will get in for the lethal spade shift.

Keep the club king in your hand and you will be endplayed, forced to lead a spade or concede a ruff-and-sluff. **
