A branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, the Morris YMCA found a temporary home in Morris in August after months of searching.

Through an agreement with the city of Morris, the YMCA is leasing the former city hall building at the corner of Wauponsee and Jefferson streets.

The YMCA has offered multiple sports clinics and activities in recent years, but without a central location until now.

The building’s interior is under construction as the YMCA makes renovations.

Once completed, the facility will include multiple large activity areas and offices.

Because of the construction, Durkin said Saturday’s open house will be confined to the outdoors. The YMCA plans to complete indoor construction by January 2015.

“After the new year, we plan to open our doors and offer programs and services, but until then, we wanted to get out, introduce ourselves and let every one know we’re happy to be here,” Durkin said.

The downtown location is temporary while the YMCA raises enough funds to build a new, permanent facility in Morris, potentially along Route 6.

Unfortunately for the Morris girls volleyball team, Tuesday night’s match against Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Kaneland was one of the downs.

Kaneland seemed a halfstep ahead of the Redskins (96, 0-2 NIB East) all night, and the Morris block was uncharacteristically ineffective. The result was a 25-22, 25-17 loss.

“We were not sharp at all,” Morris coach Jackie Litwiller said. “And we were not able to let things go and move on to the next point. You hope that you don’t have nights like this, but this was definitely one of those nights.”

The Redskins, who visit Yorkville on Thursday night, got out of the gates well enough, jumping out to a 6-1 lead early in the first set as Janelle Brehm was at the service line. After a timeout called by Kaneland coach Cynthia Violett, however, it was all Knights.

Kaneland (13-6, 3-0) battled back to take a 9-8 lead and never trailed again in the first set. The damage was well-balanced, as Ellie Dunn had three kills, Anna Senese had five and Riley Hannula had two.

Kaneland also got two aces each from Dunn and Hannah Nauert.

And while Matt Long may have a future ahead of him as a Division-I athlete, there’s no questioning that his focus for the remainder of the 2014 season is on his senior season at Coal City.

“I didn’t think we showed much heart the first few weeks, and I think [Friday] could do a lot to change the momentum of our season,” Long said. “Coming into next week’s practice, I’m hoping that boosts everyone up and gets us going.”

PLANO – Just before the blocked punt that changed everything for the Coal City football team in a 22-13 comefrom-behind victory over Plano on Friday night, Coaler senior Matt Long decided it was time to make a stand.

Facing a 13-0 deficit that seemed nearly insurmountable with roughly 8 minutes to play, Long, a starter on Coal City’s offensive line used sparingly as a defensive tackle, was inserted into the rotation on the defensive line. With Plano looking to grind it out in between the tackles and eat up clock, head coach Lenny Onsen figured Long’s 6-foot-5, 305-pound frame would help the Coalers maintain gap integrity.

“We knew they were trying to eat clock and run, and they were trying to run it more up the inside, so we threw the big body in there hoping we could get some stops so that we could make some plays,” Onsen said.

As it turned out, Long was more than just a space eater.

He made a tackle at the line of scrimmage to force a third-andlong before pressuring Plano sophomore quarterback Tyler Ward and nearly batting down a pass that would fall incomplete.

“We brought an intensity to the interior that Coal City, as a whole, had been seriously lacking,” Long said.

And, on the next play, the Coalers brought the house and blocked a punt to change the game.

“I came out and I challenged the guys and said, ‘This is the time we need to make a stop,’” Long said after Friday’s win.

“And you gotta love the way everybody stepped up and started making plays.”

And Long’s fiery side paid dividends on the offensive side of the ball, as well.

After failing to get anything going for 40 minutes, Coal City capitalized on the momentum of the blocked punt, and they did so, largely, because of the play of the offensive line, which Long anchors.

Long and company gave quarterback Nick Micetich plenty of time on a pair of critical first-down completions to

Keegan McKinney and Parker Czaja. Then, on 2nd-and-goal from a yard out, there was no mistaking where the ball was going, as Micetich took it in himself right behind Long.

“That blocked punt was everything. You could feel the momentum shift and it gave our offensive line the confidence they needed to buckle down and get the big score,” Long said.

And the momentum continued in Coal City’s favor.

The Coalers would go on to force another three-and-out and the next possession, they followed a 22-yard run up the middle by Jack Dibble with a 32-yard TD pass up the seam from Micetich to Dibble. It proved to be the go-ahead score.

Coal City would tack on another touchdown and a twopoint conversion to officially put it out of reach, getting the crucial victory that improved it to 3-1. For Long, a huge win was made even sweeter by some special guests, as Western Illinois University coaches Akiba Bradley and A.J. Blazek were in attendance scouting the senior captain.

“You’re definitely focused on the game, but you can still look back and see the people in purple over there – coach Blazek and coach Bradley,” Long said. “It definitely makes you want to play a little bit better, but either way, I should go

Bears still far from perfect after win against Jets The Bears definitely deserve to be 2-1.

Have they had a little bit of luck – or maybe a lot – absolutely, but show me a winning team that hasn’t.

The Bears passing game can run with any team in the NFL today and the defense, while still very suspect, has shown some improvement each week.

But the purpose of this exercise each week, a thorough review of the tape of their most recent game, is to learn how each unit is playing and which individuals are playing well and who isn’t.

The tape of the Bears’ 27-19 victory over the Jets reveals there is still a lot of work to do if the Bears are going to be in the playoffs, and win playoff games.

Jay Cutler was a solid B against the Jets. He wasn’t as mechanically sound or accurate as he was in San Francisco and he got a huge break with an early whistle from the refs and a dropped pick by Antonio Allen, but he made plays when he had to and more importantly he put his receivers in a position to make plays.

Forte struggled because the holes weren’t there but his effort was, and he did make a few nice plays in the passing game.

The receivers get a B- as well. Brandon Marshall had his first off-game as a member of the Bears. Maybe it was his nagging ankle or the weight of his off–the–field distractions, but one bad game out of 35 isn’t bad.

Alshon Jeffery picked Marshall up for the most part, and at this stage of his career, Santonio Holmes is strictly a number three, a role he was just average in against the Jets.

Martellus Bennett and Dante Rosario lifted this group out of the C- range and into the low B’s, but the Bears tight ends have to start blocking better in addition to catching the ball.

The offensive line gets a C+.

Mills both struggled with outstanding five–technique defensive ends and Michael Ola took a step backwards after a nice first start vs. the 49ers.

Kyle Long continues to play well and Brian de la Puente had a nice night handling one of the games best zero techniques in Damon Harrison.

The defensive line gets a B-/ C+. Stephen Paea was the best Bear on the field for stretches of the game, repeatedly collapsing the pocket up the middle but he struggled at times against the run.

Lamarr Houston also brought nice pressure at times but missed plays against the run, while Jared Allen and Will Sutton were stout against the

run but brought little pressure.

The Bears’ three sacks of Geno Smith were misleading as they failed to bring any pressure for a good part of the game.

The linebackers are also a B- as Jonathan Bostic, while not special, was definitely an upgrade over Shea McClellin at the Mike, and D.J. Williams had his best game of the season.

Unfortunately, it is time to start worrying about Lance Briggs. While the TV commentators droned on and on about his leadership, it is clear through three weeks that he is missing plays he used to make routinely against the run and in coverage.

The secondary gets an A for effort, courage and as I said, making plays.

Kyle Fuller was outstanding, and Tim Jennings played well. Chris Conte, Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray actually all struggled before getting hurt, and Isaiah Frey had a bad night at the nickel.

But with the game on the line late in the fourth quarter it was Fuller, Jennings, Brock Vereen, even Ahmad Dixon stepping up and making plays, and sealing a victory that easily could have gotten away.

Last month, Ahmad Dixon, after being drafted in the seventh round by the Cowboys, was leading Dallas in tackles in the preseason. Just over two weeks ago, he was a member of the Vikings’ practice squad.

On Monday night, he gave a maligned Bears special teams unit its first big play of the season.

Dixon recovered a Jalen Saunders fumble on the first punt of the game, setting up a touchdown that put the Bears up, 14-0.

“All week on film we’ve seen them bobble punts,” Dixon said following the Bears’ 27-19 win over the Jets. “The coaches (were) telling us, ‘just run.’ If we run, we’ll get there and get the ball. I was just thinking in my head, get there as fast as I possibly can and hopefully he’ll bobble it.

“Once I realized that he bobbled it, I told myself ‘speed up, try to shift into another gear.’

Seeing the ball hit the ground, I just left my feet, dove on it.

For someone who hadn’t had a big role on special teams since his sophomore year at Baylor, Dixon is quickly learning how valuable it can be in the NFL. “My little assignment on special teams can help this team win or lose a game,” he said.

“Had I not gotten down there fast enough on that punt when he bobbled it, nobody knows how the game could’ve turned.

Dixon said the Bears’ top gunner, Sherrick McManis, coached him up during the week to prepare him for the special teams spotlight. Dixon was in on 19 special teams snaps.

When Danny McCray had to leave the field, Dixon suddenly had to play safety for one snap late in the game, and based on the statuses of McCray, Chris Conte and Ryan Mundy, may need to do even more work next Sunday against Green Bay. If he’s not needed on defense, though, Dixon showed he can be an impact player on special teams, an area that has been in desperate need of a splash.

“I wouldn’t say anything else but it’s a blessing in disguise,” Dixon said of his three NFL teams in the last month. “I just had faith that everything would work out once I got cut from the Cowboys.”

Bossy lawmakers pile on school mandates Bad habits are hard to break. Actions by the Illinois General Assembly prove the point.

For years, legislators have had the bad habit of approving laws that require school districts across the state to add programs and services, or do things differently than before.

However, lawmakers fail to include extra cash for schools to pay for the newly mandated programs and services, hence the term “unfunded mandates.”

A look at unfunded mandates handed down by the Legislature in recent years isn’t pretty.

The average number of unfunded mandates each year since 2007? Twenty-seven.

The high-water mark was in 2011 when 46 unfunded mandates were promulgated.

(Lawmakers must have felt particularly bossy that year.)

The next highest number was 42 in 2007.

As school districts opened their fall semesters last month, they were confronted with at least 24 new mandates that legislators saw fit to approve, and the governor saw fit to sign into law.

The unfunded mandates keep piling up even as the state fails to pay its full share of state aid to school districts.

For several years, the state has prorated its payments at the rate of 89 percent, meaning districts have received 89 cents on the dollar for all state funding that they should receive.

That puts serious stress on school budgets, leaving school administrators, teachers and board members to grumble about the injustice of being forced by the state to do more with less money.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Among the new mandates this year, as compiled by the Illinois Statewide School Management Alliance: • Train students how to use external defibrillators.

• Practice how to evacuate schools in the event of shooting emergencies.

• Provide training every five years for school personnel who are required to report child abuse.

• Designate the first Monday in October as Bring Parents to School Day. Some unfunded mandates are good ideas, but without an infusion of cash to carry them out, the process inspires little enthusiasm in local schools.

Four years ago, an effort was made in the Legislature to allow school districts to opt out of future unfunded state mandates, but it failed to become law.

But former state Rep. Jerry Mitchell’s bill contained the germ of an idea that could be taken further.

We would like to see a connection made between unfunded mandates and full funding of school districts.

Let bossy legislators continue to approve unfunded mandates willy-nilly, but also let school districts opt out of them in years when the state fails to fully fund the money it owes to local schools.

When legislators finally comprehend that their ideas won’t go anywhere without providing full state aid to schools, perhaps they will act to raise that funding from 89 percent to 100 percent.

Maybe lawmakers can’t be broken of the unfunded mandates habit.

But starting the good habit of paying state aid in full might be an acceptable substitute.

Cronyism needs to end in Illinois SPRINGFIELD – In Illinois government, it’s often who you know, not what you know, that gets you hired.

It’s been that way under Republicans and under Democrats. Jobs are divvied out after every election like spoils of war.

It is part of Illinois’ culture of “cronyism” that allows the politically connected to prosper at the expense of the rest of us.

Cronyism comes in all stripes. In the decades I’ve been covering Illinois government, I’ve seen it all.

Back when George Ryan was on trial, a book of “political favors” came to light.

His underling Scott Fawell had dutifully recorded every favor the governor dispensed so that someday the favor could be returned.

That’s the way the game is played in Springfield: you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

Back in 1990, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a person’s politics could not play a role in who the state of Illinois hired for most positions. The only exceptions allowed are

So Illinois being Illinois, our politicians have gone into overdrive trying to reclassify positions as exempt so they can slip their “cronies” into the jobs.

In fact, that is what the whole hiring scandal now unfolding at the Illinois Department of Transportation revolves around – state workers who were wrongly classified as exempt.

You might ask, what’s the harm?

Better-qualified candidates were passed over for those positions, so they were cheated out of employment opportunities. But more importantly, taxpayers were shortchanged by not having the most qualified people working for them.

Yes, cronyism is alive and well in Illinois.

But government cronyism affects private-sector jobs, too.

Politicians routinely give tax breaks and other subsidies to companies. Politicians do this to get bragging rights about the number of jobs they “create.”

But those jobs come at the expense of competing businesses and ordinary taxpayers.

While jobs may be created at the subsidized firm, they often are lost at businesses trying to compete.

That’s just wrong.

When it comes to government subsidies, businesses should get: Nada, zilch, zip, zero.

You got it: nothing.

A more fair approach would be to create a level playing field with low taxes and minimal regulation for all businesses.

That would promote job creation – without a hint of cronyism.

Elle Fanning likes animated feistiness

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now The Fanning sisters, Dakota, 20, and Elle, 16, have been taking turns over the past decade, starring and costarring in all sorts of different films.

Dakota best displayed her chops in “War of the Worlds” and “The Runaways” (playing the wild Cherie Currie).

Elle really shone in “Ginger & Rosa” and, more recently, in “Maleficent.”

In a great case of coincidence, both Fannings have now voice acted in the wonderfully old-fashioned stop-motion animated films of Laika, the Oregon-based studio responsible for “Coraline” (2009) and “ParaNorman” (2012).

Dakota had the lead role in “Coraline,” and now Elle has a major part as the precocious Winnie in Laika’s “The Boxtrolls,” based on the novel “Here Be Monsters.”

Elle spoke a lot about the film – and a little bit about Dakota – at a recent interview in Los Angeles.

Ed Symkus: The character of Winnie, who keeps trying to get the attention of her oblivious, cheese-lov-

ing father, isn’t even in the book. She was created for the film. How would you describe her?

Elle Fanning: She’s a 9-yearold girl, and her dad is the mayor of Cheesebridge, where they live.

Obviously, because her dad’s the mayor, she’s kind of the elite. She can be spoiled at times. The audience will probably not want to like her in the beginning, because she’s definitely bratty. But you get to see her sensitive side come out as the movie progresses, and you realize that she just wants attention from her dad, because he is too distracted with cheese.

I do think that Winnie can be overdramatic, and that she sometimes takes things a little too far. But I love her sassiness, and it was fun for me to do.

Symkus: Was it very difficult to handle the posh British accent?

Fanning: I had done the British accent twice before so I’m comfortable with the rhythm of it. But still, you’re always intimidated, because you don’t want to let down or insult anyone who really has that accent.

I worked with a dialect

coach to perfect it and get it right, and it was really helpful in finding Winnie’s voice.

At our first voice session, we kind of played around to find the right tone. There were a couple of earlier scripts, and in the beginning, Winnie was even more snooty and you really didn’t like her.

Then when we went in and found her voice, we thought, maybe we can make her a little more likeable, or just feisty but not so mean-spirited. That’s how we found our way in.

Symkus: How did you prepare for an animation role?

Fanning: It’s still a character, so I still prepare the same way – just imagining that I was this girl. When I go in, I always take my shoes off in the booth. And I felt that because Winnie was so energized, I never sat down.

At first I was more conscious of my face, but then I realized it doesn’t matter what you look like, and I could really exaggerate. You could overdo it, and when you’re acting for animators, more is great.

When you’re doing live action, more is overacting

and that’s not what you want.

You want more subtlety.

Symkus: Did you talk to Dakota about working on “Coraline” before you took on this role?

Fanning: I knew about Laika and stop-motion from when she was doing that. I went with her [to the studio] and looked at all the “Coraline” sets.

About three years ago they asked me to be part of “The Boxtrolls,” and I wanted to do it right away, because I know how unbelievable their world is and what they do.

But Dakota and I don’t really talk about films; it’s like an off-limit area. So, she didn’t give me any advice on it, but she was happy that I was doing it.

She has her Coraline statue, and I have my Winnie statue.

Symkus: The film is really all about cheese. Do you have a favorite cheese?

Fanning: I do. I love Verata goat cheese. You can’t go wrong with cheddar cheese, either. I love cheese.

ADVICE Divorced dad’s girlfriend wants nothing to do with kids Dear Abby: I am a 42-year-old divorced father of two. I have had a girlfriend, “Dawn,” for about a year. I’m not sure what kind of canned or powdered drink your friends are bringing, but if they are on some kind of restricted diet, then it’s what they need to do for a while. If the restaurant objected, the manager would either tell your friends not to do it anymore or institute a charge to make up for the lost income.

New drugs for atrial fibrillation have upside, downside Dear Doctor K: I’ve been taking warfarin without any problems for years to treat atrial fibrillation. Now my doctor wants me to switch to a different medicine.

Should I? Dear Reader: Atrial fibrillation (aFib) is a rapid quivering in your heart’s upper chambers, or atria.

Instead of vigorously pumping blood down into the lower chambers (the ventricles), the quivering upper chambers let blood pool inside them. As blood sits, it can form clots. If a clot gets into the bloodstream and blocks a vessel supplying your brain, it can cause a stroke. Therefore, a person with aFib needs anticoagulant (anti-clotting) drugs.

Until a few years ago, the only option was a drug called warfarin (Coumadin). Warfarin works well, but the dosing is tricky. As a result, anyone taking warfarin must have regular blood tests to make sure the dose is correct. Too weak a dose can increase the risk of blood clots; too strong a dose can increase the risk of bleeding.

To make matters more complicated, the body doesn’t always react the same way to warfarin.

One month the dose may be just right. But the next month, the dose is either not strong enough or is too strong.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Over the past few years, new anticoagulant drugs have become available. The new drugs available in the U.S. include dabigatran (Pradaxa), rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and apixaban (Eliquis).

But, as you asked, if you’re doing well on warfarin, is there any reason to switch? My colleague Dr. Christian Ruff is a cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He says yes, there is.

The new drugs are just as effective as warfarin, but safer. Compared with warfarin, they are only half as likely to cause bleeding in the brain. The new drugs also don’t require regular blood tests, and they have fewer interactions with other drugs and foods.

But the new medications do have some downsides. For one thing, they wear off quickly. So if you miss a dose, your clot risk rises. (Warfarin is long-acting, so missing a dose or two is less risky.) And when the newer drugs cause bleeding, it is harder to stop than bleeding caused by warfarin.

The new medications are still

new. We don’t have information about possible side-effects that could develop with long-term use.

Also, the new drugs are more expensive than warfarin, and for some patients, that can be a disincentive to take them.

Also, the new drugs need to be taken twice a day, whereas warfarin is taken just once a day. Some people have trouble remembering to take medicines more than once a day. Not taking the new medicines exactly as directed – for this reason, or because they’re expensive – can increase the risk of clots.

So, when I have a patient on warfarin whose dose has proved to be very stable, and who has not had any adverse effects despite taking it for many years, I think twice about switching to the new medicines – even though I agree with Dr. Ruff that they do have some clear advantages. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m waiting for more information about the possible adverse effects of the new drugs before recommending them to every person who needs an anti-clotting drug.

We are looking at choosing between two fits, one balanced, in which the partners each have the same number of cards in that suit, and one unbalanced, in which one partner holds more cards than his partner.

In general, the balanced suit will make the better trump choice. But what happens in a game-going deal when that is in a minor and the unbalanced is in a major?

Then usually you select the major-suit fit because you need one fewer trick to collect the game bonus.

In this deal, when North responded two hearts, a transfer bid showing at least five spades and any point-count, South might have rebid three spades, a superaccept, to indicate a good hand with four-card spade support and a doubleton somewhere. Then, when North rebid a natural and game-forcing three clubs, South was in a quandary.

If North was thinking about a slam, clubs rated to be the better trump suit. But if North was not that ambitious, four spades would probably be preferable.

Note that five clubs would have gone down two in jig time after East led the heart queen.

Against four spades, West, with an unenviable lead, chose a trump. Declarer won, drew trumps, cashed all of the clubs ending in the dummy, and played a diamond. West took that trick and led his second diamond winner. What did South do?

He calmly discarded a heart from the dummy, leaving West endplayed to open up hearts or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Summer’s not over yet, but it’s not too early to start planting your spring-blooming bulbs.

Temperatures have already begun dropping in the evening - a signal that your bulb planting should begin.

The rule of thumb is to plant bulbs before the first frost, but at the very least before the ground freezes so that they can form roots to sustain them through the winter. Here in the Chicagoland area, that means September or October. It’s that two-to-three-month period of freezing weather followed by the spring warm-up that triggers bulbs’ urge to bloom.

Different types of bulbs require different planting techniques. Some need to be planted deeper in the ground, while others flower best when planted closer to the surface.

You have to check which planting your individual bulbs prefer.

Once you know, it’s basically a cinch to dig the hole and drop in the bulb, then covering it

over with soil.

And speaking of soil, bulbs need phosphorous for proper root development, so mix some bonemeal into the soil before planting.

Most bulbs do, however, have a few basic requirements to assure beautiful blooms in the spring. They like welldrained soil in a sunny spot.

Most won’t bloom in the shade.

They also won’t bloom if you plant them too deep. Remember to plant bulbs between two and three times their height.

And don’t forget to plop them in the ground when the outside evening temperatures are between 40 and 50 degrees.

From crocuses -, those early bird bulbs that bloom right through the snow - to daffodils and tulips.

If your soil is mostly clay, add compost, peat moss or other organic material, working it into the top 12 to 18 inches.

Always water after planting to encourage root growth before winter sets in.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Minooka farmer Bob Bols spends one morning every September bringing in bushels of corn that aren’t quite ready for harvest so Morris’ lampposts can be decorated for the Grundy County Corn Festival.

“My dad did it,” Bols said.

“I just continued the tradition.”

Bob and his father, Orville, farmed together for years at the family homestead on Route 6. Bob and his wife, Orpha, live there today.

Orville Bols was the first generation of Bols farmers to provide thousands of cornstalks to the community for decoration. Sue Morse, Corn Festival board member, said she can’t remember who donated stalks prior to the Bols family.

Last Saturday, Bob and his son, Mark, took to the fields with community volunteers to bring in about 8,000 stalks of corn, which Morse, Bob’s cousin, took downtown on the back of a hay rack.

Bob said Mark, who works at Grainco FS, has started working the family farm more.

He is happy to know he will keep the tradition alive.

“I will continue the tradition,” Mark said. “I think it’s a nice thing to do.”

The volunteers first have to walk rows of corn that are about to be cut, picking ears by hand, much like Bob remembers doing as a child.

“When I was young, I’d get up with dad in the dark and go out to the field and pick

and husk corn before I went to school,” Bob said.

He enjoys sharing the story with the kids who come out to help for Corn Festival, knowing that for some, it’s their first time on a farm.

They picked 35 to 40 bushels of corn Saturday morning before using a tractor to cut down the rows of stalks to be

loaded.

Morse said one year, when she was in still in school, volunteer pickers left the corn on the stalks. Kids went into Hornsby’s 5 cent to $1, which was still downtown, and bought pea shooters.

Danny Kaye and Susan Cabot, film stars of the 1940s, were the parade grand marshals that year, and the kids used the pea shooters to shoot corn at the stars as they rode through town.

“From that point on, they’ve removed the ears of corn,” Morse said.

The Bols family doesn’t get paid for the corn it gives to the Corn Festival, and Bob said he wouldn’t want anything for it.

“Everyone has to do their part,” he said. “They supply all the labor, so everybody wins.”

Boy Scouts from Troop 469 in Morris, along with other community members, spent two and a half to three hours bringing in the field before tying the stalks to all the posts in town.

“The hard work and stalks of corn are very much appreciated,” Corn Festival Board President John Sparrow said.

MORRIS – The hiring of an assistant for Grundy County Human Resources Director Debra Johnson was halted Monday evening following confusion about the position.

Grundy County Finance Committee members did not understand why the assistant’s

Nicor explains gas smell in Channahon

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Excess levels of mercaptan – the pungent additive that gives natural gas its “smell” – led to several calls from concerned residents about potential gas leaks Monday night.

Channahon Deputy Police Chief Adam Bogart said the village received several calls starting at about 11 p.m. Monday.

“What they’re smelling is the additive mercaptan that’s added to the gas line,” Bogart said. “We’re advising everyone to continue to report any

smells they might observe.”

Bogart said he was told by Nicor that the “over odorization” situation occurred at the utility’s distribution center on Mound Road in Shorewood.

Despite its smell, which has been compared to rotting cabbage, mercaptan is harmless.

However, previously undetectable leaks may now be detectable due to the excess supply of the additive, Bogart said.

Nicor is correcting the issue by “flaring off” the excess additive, Bogart said.

Residents who smell natural gas are asked to call the Channahon Fire Protection District at 815-467-2112.

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon School Board District 17 has a lot on its plate this year: a new superintendent search, collective bargaining, and designing and preparing for construction at N.B. Galloway School.

With those demands, board members Monday evening decided to wait for further discussions on a potential school closing until after the new post-election board is reconfigured in May 2015.

Members have considered reconfiguring the district’s four grade schools, possibly closing one to be more efficient as student enrollment drops.

Superintendent Karin Evans reminded the board Monday that student population was about 1,800 in 2007-08, as compared to 1,048 projected in the next few years.

Galloway building schedule The board received a timeline for modifications to N.B. Galloway School, planned for completion in July 2016. The school’s lunchroom doubles as a gymnasium, and the physical education program stops for two hours midday to allow for lunch.

The board in August authorized an architectural firm to design and begin plans to convert Galloway’s lunchroom to a gym and to build a new lunchroom that would also serve as a multipurpose room.

Architects estimated construction costs at $1.1 million, not including furniture.

Evans said the timeline would include schematic design in early spring 2015; design development in late spring; permitting in August 2015; bidding in October 2015 and construction in spring 2016.

The change would make closing a school easier if the board decides to go that route.
