2 killed when bike hits building Channahon man ‘greatly missed,’ says relatives

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two people, including one from Channahon, were killed Sunday when their motorcycle struck a building.

Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said the crash happened about 9:06 p.m. A Harley-Davidson traveling north on Barney Drive went past the T-intersection at Glenwood Avenue.

“For some reason, they continued over the curb, through the grass and struck the building. Both were ejected from the bike and neither were wearing helmets,” Roechner said.

Patrick T. Ortiz, 34, of Channahon, and Amy Reed, 24, of Palos Hills, were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

According to the Will County coroner’s office, Reed died in the emergency room at 9:27 p.m. and Ortiz died in the emergency room at 9:54 p.m.

The McKeown Building, 2455 Glenwood Ave., is set back about 30 yards from the intersection. A restoration company was preparing Monday afternoon to fix a hole the impact left in the white bricks.

Watching the contractors from the sidewalk was a woman carrying a single red rose.

She declined to give her name but identified herself as a relative of Ortiz.

“He’ll be greatly missed by a lot of people. Even if he hadn’t heard from you in a while, you called him up, he’d say ‘Whatever you need,’ ” she said.

She said Ortiz grew up in New Lenox and was an experienced motorcycle rider. She did not know the relationship he had with Reed.

Mark D. Stukel, 56, was crash with motorcycle ROMEOVILLE – A 56-year-old Channahon man died after being hit by a motorcycle Friday night on Route 53 in

pronounced dead at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital at 9:28 p.m. Friday, according to the Will County coroner.

The motorcycle was traveling northbound on Route 53 in the area of Chambers Drive when it struck Stukel, who he was walking in the street, Romeoville police said in a

news release.

Stukel was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation.

Sunday’s waddle included more than dogs. Guardian Angel Basset Rescue Board Member David Rafael of Wisconsin said organizers planned games and fun events for the dogs and owners. At one end of downtown Dwight is the Guardian Angel Basset Park, he said.

The 12-acre park, which includes a pavilion, was purchased with the support of many dog owners. One part of the park includes a memorial area dedicated to deceased bassets.

Josh Slowinski of Romeoville said he brings his bassets, Snails and Molly, every year.

“We love it,” Slowinski said. “It’s really nice to see the kids’ expressions.”

“It’s about community. I think that’s a part of why we do it,” Slowinski added.

DWIGHT – Anyone wanting to see a basset hound just had to stand on the street Sunday during Dwight’s Harvest Days parade.

Every brown, tan and white variety of the low-to-the ground, long-eared pet was on display.

Basset hounds on leashes, accompanied by their owners, stepped off as the lead unit in Sunday’s parade. Emmy Little of the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue said the “waddle,” as the gathering is called, featured about 900 dogs.

Each dog’s owner paid $25 to enter the parade, said Little, a Dwight resident. Owners also raised money for the basset rescue organization, taking pledges for the number of blocks walked.

The group uses all the money raised to rescue and provide foster care for other bassets.

Kindlespire announced his favorite food as any kind of fruit, and his favorite activities as peekaboo and dancing to “Happy Feet.”

“I’ve seen other people do it in the past,” Tate’s mother said of the Baby Show, “and I thought it would be fun to get him dressed up.”

Tate, who took second place in his category, got a little tearyeyed at the beginning, but brightened up in front of the judges.

“We had to wake him up from a nap,” his mother said, “but he did pretty well.”

For Victoria Robinson, of Morris, entering 2-year-old Brealyn in the show was carrying on a family tradition.

“It’s our kickoff to Corn Fest,” Robinson said. “Whatever we can do Corn Fest, we do.”

On stage, Brealyn jumped around and had a lively conversation with the judges. She ended up with first place in her category.

“There was a lot of good competition,” her mother said.

“There were some serious cuties this year.”

OPINION Rauner needs a bigger boat to win Bruce Rauner reportedly had one of those bugs that was going around last week.

I feel his pain. I was sick with one thing or another all week. Luckily, I took a little time off, or I’d probably have felt even worse.

Rauner didn’t take any time off, and it showed. For the first time at his press conferences, he read his statements right off the page, painfully stumbling over his words. It wasn’t a pretty sight.

Maybe the recent Chicago Tribune poll which showed him trailing Gov. Pat Quinn by 11 points somehow added to his physical misery. It was Rauner’s personal decision, after all, to not flood the airwaves with TV ads during the spring and summer when Quinn didn’t have the money to adequately respond.

He plain cheaped out, and now it’s gonna cost him a lot more money to win this thing, and he has nobody to blame but himself.

Or maybe it was that bottom-feeding Chicago Magazine “profile” published last week. Six thousand words were spilled on Chicago’s glossy pages to rehash boring stuff we already knew apparently in order to give the magazine an excuse to slip a couple of needlessly invasive personal items into the middle that told us absolutely nothing about the candidate or what sort of governor he’d be. I’d be pretty upset, too.

But, hey, that’s the game, I suppose. There will always be those who will try to use a person’s family to somehow disqualify the candidate for public service. It’s a filthy business.

And despite the author’s

That’d make anybody grumpy.

Whatever’s going on, sickness, a bit of poll-induced regret/fright or protective familial anger, he and his campaign have to get over it. The Quinn campaign has obviously gotten under their skin. Quinn looks and sounds like a kindly, harmless older man.

In reality, he’s a calm yet vicious street fighter who shows no remorse for his adversaries. He’s at his best during periods of chaos, and this campaign is only going to get more chaotic.

You gotta be ready for everything in this game and Rauner obviously wasn’t. Rauner may look upon himself as a cut-throat businessman, but business ain’t got nothing on Illinois politics, baby.

I hope you got some rest and tried to get healthier, dude, because you really need to step it up. We can all smell the blood in the water. And that’s your blood, Bruce. Fair warning.

The sharks are circling and plenty more are on the way. If you want to win this thing, you’re gonna need a bigger boat.

Redskins fall just short in overtime

The Sterling senior defensive tackle wasn’t too tired, however, to make the play of the game. Wolber’s tackle on a two-point conversion pass allowed the Golden Warriors to hold on for a 28-27 overtime victory against the Redskins on Friday night in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game. Sterling (3-1) overcame a two-toucbdown deficit late in the third quarter to pull out the victory.

“We just battled,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said.

“It was a lot of fun to see those guys go out there and do what they did. To be down 21-7, we could have easily folded. This group decided they didn’t want to do that. They wanted to make sure this thing ended the right way.”

Sterling had the ball first in overtime. Two plays pushed the Warriors back to the 12, but on third down, junior quarterback Sterling Thornton hooked up with Grant Jacoby on a scoring strike.

Antonio Diaz booted the extra point to put Sterling ahead, 28-21. Morris (2-2) needed two plays to score on its overtime possession. Quarterback Griffin Sobol tossed a 7-yard TD pass to halfback Keagan Sobol on a perfectly executed center screen to draw the Redskins within 28-27. This time, however, Wolber sniffed it out and brought down Sobol at the 1, setting off a wild celebration by the Golden Warriors, as their student section poured onto the field.

“They had success and popped a couple of big gains off of that play,” Wolber said.

“I guess I just read it right that time, and was in the right place at the right time to make the big play.”

Thorson wished he had tried something different on the game-deciding play.

“We felt like we had some

momentum,” Thorson said, “but I have to make a better play call. I don’t regret going for two, but I think I probably should have made a different call. Their kid obviously made a great play, so you’ve got to give credit to them.”

Morris, after spotting the Warriors an early 7-0 lead on a 77-yard run by Thornton, scored 21 consecutive points, all on TD runs by Griffin Sobol, to seize control. His last score, a 1-yard plunge with 1:12 left in the third quarter, gave the Redskins a 21-7 lead.

Sterling responded with a 10-play, 70-yard march capped

by 17-yard run by Thornton with 8:43 to play to draw within 21-13. A fumble by Morris on the first play of its next possession was pounced on by Sterling defender Joe Brouilette, giving the Warriors the ball right back. They didn’t waste the opportunity.

On fourth-and-goal from the Morris 9-yard line, Thornton hooked up with Turner Morse in the far left corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

They then connected on a twopoint conversion pass to knot

the score at 21. Morris nearly stole the game in the waning moments of regulation. A fake punt pass from Keagan Sobol to Josh Hulbert with 1:50 to play gained 24 yards and put the Redskins in business at the Sterling 21-yard line.

Three plays later, with 6.4 seconds to play, Morris lined up for a potential game-winning, 30-yard field goal. The kick by the Redskins’ Luis Luna was blocked, however, by Sterling’s Brett Gould, sending the game to overtime.

Two plays later, facing a makeor-break third-and-9, Coal City quarterback Nick Micetich found wide receiver Keegan McKinney on a quick hitch in front of the sticks. McKinney broke a tackle, made a pair of additional defenders miss and bolted down the sideline for a 36-yard gain and a critical first down.

After another passing first down and a short run, Micetich called his own number and took it in on a quarter-

back sneak from one yard out.

It was a statement drive for a struggling unit.

“Ohhh, gosh,” Coal City offensive lineman Matt Long said as he searched for the words to describe that crucial drive. “That was the biggest key to the game right there.

Our defense had made plays all game and then our special teams came out and made that play.

“It was time for the offense to step up and we did.”

With all the momentum playing into Coal City’s fa-

PLANO – Trailing by 13 points with less than eight minutes to play on Friday night as they visited the Plano Reapers, the Coal City football team was finished.

Through 40 minutes, the Coalers had muffed a punt and thrown an interception while punting on every other offensive drive. They couldn’t muster anything offensively and a 13-point deficit may as well have been 100.

Yet, after pressuring several Plano punts, an opportunity presented itself to change the game.

The Coalers made some changes along their defensive front (including inserting 6-foot-5, 305-pound Matt Long at defensive tackle) that helped hold the Reapers scoreless in the second half. And, after a three-and-out anchored by a big stop from Long, the Coalers set up to bring the house.

Coal City’s pressure collapsed the left side of Plano’s coverage unit and a sleu of Coalers swarmed Plano punter Zach Smith, blocking the punt and changing the course of the game.

“That’s what got the ball rolling for us,” coach Lenny Onsen said after Friday’s 22-13 win. “We didn’t play real well in the first half, but we just finally found a little energy … and I’m just glad we took that momentum and ran with it.”

Energized by the blocked punt, a stagnant Coalers offense came to life.

A Joey Quinn extra point made it 14-13 Coalers with 1:36 remaining, but Plano still had a shot.

The Reapers took over with a shot to regain the lead, but the Coal City defense was having none of it. Brad Churnovic and Kurtis Smith combined for a sack on first down, and facing a fourth and long, Marco Alegria came off the edge for a sack that all but sealed the game.

The Coalers took over on downs, needing just a first down to win the game. However, after forcing a third down and stopping the clock, Plano’s defense allowed Dibble to score from 10 yards out in order to preserve some clock, but the moved backfired as Onsen opted to gamble for the two-point conversion to make it a nine-point game and put it out of reach.

Dibble took the plunge, and the Coalers converted. An interception by safety Brad Littleton on Plano’s next possession officially ended the Reapers’ chances.

It capped an incredible comeback for the Coalers.

“Hopefully we learned from this and found something out about our club,” Onsen said.

Coal City moved to 3-1 with the victory. Plano dropped to 1-3 on the year.

Seneca’s defense shredded by Herscher STAFF REPORTS SENECA – Through the first three games of the high school football season, Seneca had leaned heavily on its defense to fashion a 3-0 record by allowing only 26 total points.

In the fourth game Friday night, however, the defense met its match, and then some, as Herscher ran for 400 yards and beat the Irish, 47-7.

“Herscher flat-out whooped us,” Seneca coach Ted O’Boyle said. “You have to give them credit for that.”

Alex Thornley scored the lone TD for the Irish, who travel Friday night to Lisle.

CROSS COUNTRY Minooka Flight Invitational: Minooka won the title for the first time since 2007, as Ashley Tutt finished ahead of Yorkville’s Skyler Bollinger in the championship flight. The two teams were tied entering the final race, and Minooka claimed a 19-20 victory. Minooka got wins from Emily Shelton (18:27, flight 4), Morgan Crouch (18:37, flight 3) and Mackenzie Callahan (18:12, flight 2). The Indians also received a fourth-place effort from Emily Ellis (flight 5) and fifths from Gaby Gall (flight 6) and Caitlin Kurtz (flight 7). Weingarten: Pretty much

The Washington Post WASHINGTON – Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist Gene Weingarten is known for exploring morality in both somber and extremely silly ways, including an in-depth article on parents who mistakenly leave their children to die in hot cars and an essay that asks, among other things, whether it’s possible to steal a fart.

His new book, out this week, lays out different questions, and for a new audience.

It’s a book on atheism for children.

In “Me & Dog,” Weingarten – who is an atheist – and his regular illustrator-collaborator, Eric Shansby, introduce a dog named Murphy and a kid named Sid whom he worships and tries to please.

The pair stand in for humans and God, and through big, colorful drawings and rhyme pose questions some probably will find insightful and others offensive.

Here are excerpts from the conversation:

Michelle Boorstein: How did you come to write this book?

Gene Weingarten: I stepped on my dog’s foot. That actually happened. The whole book was created in four seconds of insight. My dog – like the one in the book – is named Murphy. I stepped on her foot, she howled and then asked me, clearly: “What have I done wrong? What did I do? I won’t do it again.” The whole idea flashed in my mind: I am her God! The allegory sprung to mind. That there is a controlling presence. That we can importune him with favors. That all things happen for a reason. We may not understand the reason, but somebody up there does.

This is a book that is a sweet little book. It’s not hectoring

the way I raised my kids.

I knew my parents had no religious beliefs except they were hypocrites in that I had a bar mitzvah. It was important to them in their society that they pretended.

Yom Kippur we celebrated by drawing the drapes in the dining room so no one could see us eating.

Boorstein: Let’s get back to the book and how it came to be.

Is that something to fear? And the book says: No, we have each other, we have love and the world is full of endless possibilities. Why should that be frightening?

Boorstein: What did you tell your children about God when they were growing up (his daughter, Molly, is 33, and his son, Daniel, is 30)?

Weingarten: They grew up knowing, understanding we didn’t have a religion.

We didn’t go to synagogue or church. My wife was born Catholic and I was born Jewish, but our kids weren’t bar or bat mitzvahed or anything. But we didn’t proselytize [atheism]. It became clear to them over time that faith wasn’t part of our life. And then exactly the right thing happened.

My daughter was curious

about religion and wound up majoring in pre-med and religion. She wanted to learn. (Molly calls herself “agnostic.” Daniel says he’s a mix of “Native American spirituality, gnosticism and Eastern philosophies.”)

Boorstein: But how did you discuss the issues that normally come up?

Weingarten: I don’t think I used the word “atheism.”

Because I don’t believe in proselytizing, even atheism.

It’s an essential problem with religion in that it is, by it’s nature, exclusionary. I’m not anti-religion, it does a lot of good things. But at its basis it is: We’re right, and they’re wrong. I’m sure at various times I told [my kids] my belief is: This is it, and IT is beautiful. The world is filled with hope and opportunity and it’s our job to take care of one another. That’s what this book is saying. This is not a threatening concept.

best-selling books today is Todd Burpo’s “Heaven Is for Real,” about Burpo’s son who claims he went to heaven.

Why are we troweling that kind of crap into the heads of our kids? This book is an alternative to that, it is an antidote to “Heaven Is for Real” ... I hate the fact that “Heaven Is for Real” is a runaway bestseller.

Atheists always get this question: How can you be an ethical, moral person? Which is annoying and insulting. It demonstrates a fundamental disconnect. Do you really need fear of hell to make you do good, moral things? I don’t need to fear the devil to do good. I know that it’s fundamentally right to do good. And that’s what I tried to teach my children. I have ethical and moral children.

Boorstein: You say you “want to start a conversation.” Is this advocacy? Is that you?

Weingarten: I’m not that earnest. I wanted to do a really entertaining book that didn’t patronize children and that made a very gentle statement. If there is no deity, and that’s what we have, that’s not a frightening thing.

The world is full of beauty and hope and we should treat one another with respect and love, and that’s a pretty great situation.

DONALD W. COCKREAM Born: May 20, 1945 Died: Sept. 19, 2014 Donald W. Cockream, age 69, of Elwood, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center with his family at his side.

Born May 20, 1945, in Morris, he was the son of Raymond E. and Dorothy M (Attaway) Cockream. He was a graduate of Morris High School, Class of 1963. Don was a member of the United States Marine Corps and was part of the official Marine troops first landing in Vietnam on March 8, 1965.

He served two tours of duty and was honorably discharged in September of 1967. He married Mary Ann Lamping at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Joliet, on November 12, 1966.

Don worked for Commonwealth Edison at Station 29, retiring as Unit Operator after 32 years of service.

He also served with the Elwood Fire Department for 20 years, retiring as Captain. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, a Eucharistic Minister, and former president of the Parish Council. He was also a former 4-H leader, Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator with Will County and Grundy County Emergency Management Agencies, and member of TOPS, New Lenox Chapter, and a life member of Stone city VFW Post #2199.

He enjoyed NASCAR racing and traveling to various race tracks, and enjoyed camping across the country. He and is wife were also a team couple for Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years,

Mary Ann (nee Lamping) Cockream, who he married November 12, 1966 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Joliet. Also surviving are his son, Greg R. (Jennifer) Cockream of Wilmington; his daughter, Michelle R. (Gary, Jr.) Kurbis of Elwood; four loved grandchildren, Jessica A. Bertino, Emily M. Cockream, Gary L. Kurbis III, and Nathan D. Kurbis; brothers, Raymond G. (Linda) Cockream and Robert (Judy) Cockream; sister, Sharon (Charles) Crumb; special aunt and uncle, Betty and Dick Powers; sister-in-law, Marie F. Strysik; brother-in-law, Clarence W. (Patricia) Lamping; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Chris Lachowski, Ray Spreitzer, and Jim Offrink.

He was preceded by his parents; one sister, Terri L. Fannin; and two brothers-in-law, Mitchell Fannin and Joseph J. Strysik.

Don will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched, and will live forever in our hearts and memories.

RAYMOND R. DELACH SR. Born: Aug. 22, 1924; in Joliet, IL Died: Sept. 21, 2014; in Morris, IL Raymond R. Delach Sr, age 90, of Gooselake, passed away late Sunday afternoon, September 21, 2014, at the Morris Hospital .

Born August 22, 1924 in Joliet. He was a son of Anton and Katherine (Spreitzer) Delach. He attended Joliet Central High School, and honorably served in the United States Army during WWII. After his service, he graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign/ Urbana. He married Anna M. Gil on August 21, 1948.

Raymond worked and retired as a methods engineer at Electro-Motive.

He is survived by a daughter, Judith Brockway of Wilmington; two sons, Lawrence (Chris) Delach of Morris and Raymond Delach Jr. of Coal City; and a granddaughter, Courtney Delach, Morris. Also surviving are a sister, Josephine Balma; and a brother, Robert (Kathy) Delach, both of Joliet.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife of 53 years, Anna, in 2001; a grandson, Eric Wilson; a sister and brother in law, Kay and Frank Racich; a brother and sister in law, Anton and Theresa Delach; a step sister, Mary Marzel; and a son in law, Bob Brockway.

Visitation will be on Thursday September 25, 2014, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Ferrari Funeral Services, 1044 Ferrari Drive, Coal City, IL. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, September 26, 2014, at The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City. Father Robert Noesen will officiate. ADVICE Mother battles fears while raising happy daughter Marriage wouldn’t be wise Dear Abby: I had an awful childhood. After I was finally taken into state custody, I cycled through six different foster homes. Because of it, I have struggled with mental health issues for as long as I can remember.

I’m 28 now and have a 4-yearold daughter who is everything to me. The problem is, I’m terrified of strangers. As a child, I saw firsthand how evil people can be, and I am almost paralyzed with fear because of my hyper-vigilance. I fight the battle every day.

I am in counseling and I’m trying, but I am afraid I am going to make my daughter fear the world.

She’s in Head Start and loves it.

Anyone who meets her comments on how happy and outgoing she is, but I don’t know how to walk the tightrope between keeping her safe and making her afraid.

Any advice would be appreciated.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Terrified: Considering your past, I think you’re being a wonderful mother. You are getting professional help and for that I applaud you. You are realistic about your issues, and your daughter appears to be thriving.

You may need counseling for some time to avoid becoming overprotective and to allow your daughter to develop into a healthy adult. While your fears are the result of your history, they do not have to become a part of hers.

During the 1960s, many parents stopped teaching their children social refinements like the one you describe. The result has been a lack of sensitivity in social interactions, and it is evident in more ways than this one.

Women at high risk for breast cancer should have yearly MRI Dear Doctor K: I’m at high risk for breast cancer. Should I have screening mammograms, MRIs or both?

Dear Reader: Many factors can put a woman at high risk for breast cancer. The most common and important are these: (1) inheriting certain high-risk genes from one of your parents; (2) having a parent, sibling or child with breast cancer; and (3) having received radiation treatment to the chest (usually for some type of cancer) before age 30.

Some women at high risk for breast cancer – Angelina Jolie is a very public example – choose to have both breasts surgically removed. For women at high risk, this choice offers the best prevention.

However, most women at high risk opt for a less drastic option: regular screening tests to detect early breast cancer. That’s the easy part of the answer to your question: Nearly every expert would agree that women at high risk for breast cancer should have regular screening tests.

The harder part of the answer is to decide which screening tests should be ordered, and how often they should be done. That’s because there isn’t a lot of evidence comparing the various screening

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff tests, and also because the technology used to perform screening is improving over time. So an answer that’s right today may not be right a year from now.

I think it is reasonable for high-risk women to get yearly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams starting by age 30.

Based on today’s technology, there’s little question that MRI is better than mammograms for screening high-risk women. Yearly mammograms are optional.

MRI uses magnetic fields to create an image of the breast, providing more detail than mammograms. And it detects small cancers that mammograms can miss.

What’s more, mammograms expose women to a small amount of radiation. So, is there any reason for high-risk women to have a mammogram in addition to an MRI? A recent study helps answer that question. It included 2,207 high-risk women, ages 30 to 69.

All were screened with digital mammograms and breast MRI

scans.

The results were as expected.

In the first year, the screening found 35 breast cancers. Of those, MRI detected all 35. Mammograms found only 12. No cancers were detected by mammogram but not by MRI. Does this mean mammograms are unwarranted? It’s not that simple. Breast MRIs show many more false positives than mammograms. False positives are spots that could be cancers. But after further testing (usually an invasive biopsy), they are found not to be cancers.

Many breast cancer specialists recommend that women at high risk for breast cancer and who have an abnormal result on the MRI should then get a mammogram. If the mammogram is normal, then they assume the MRI result was falsely positive and spare the woman a biopsy.

If you are at high risk for breast cancer, have a breast MRI every year. You and your doctor can decide if you should also have a yearly mammogram.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, unwed, and have a 2-year-old son. A guy I knew three years ago has been contacting me for the last six months. I haven’t seen him in two years, but he says he wants to marry me and adopt my son.

Let him know you’re interested and that you would like to start seeing him soon. After you do so, you’ll have a much better idea whether he would make a good husband and father.

I realize that it must be extremely difficult to be 19 and an unmarried mother, and probably many times you feel overwhelmed, but that’s no reason to leap blindly into marriage. If the marriage fails, believe me, you, and your child, will suffer much more than if you had remained single.

The cornerstone of a successful marriage is mutual love. You won’t know if you love this guy, or if he really loves you, until you get to know him. If he’s truly the right guy, the best way for him to prove it is by showing patience with you now.

This week we are looking at deals in which North and South have to decide which of two suits to choose as trumps.

In general, a balanced fit – one where North and South have the same number of cards in the suit – will be preferable to an unbalanced fit – in which one player has more cards than his partner.

In this deal, if the balanced diamond suit is trumps, declarer can arrange an extra ruffing trick after drawing trumps and discarding the spade eight from the dummy on his fifth club. In seven diamonds, South takes one spade, five diamonds, six clubs and one spade ruff in the North hand.

If the unbalanced suit is trumps, (here the 6-4 club fit), there is an inevitable spade loser. South can win only 12 tricks, not 13.

The auction itself was exciting. South opened one club, planning to bid diamonds twice to describe his distribution and strength. If West had immediately overcalled four hearts, it would have made life very tough for North-South.

North could have bid five diamonds, but East would have increased the inconvenience by raising to five hearts.

In the actual sequence, once South knew about the double fit, he control-bid (cue-bid) five hearts to suggest a grand slam.

And when North was happy to control-bid five spades, South jumped to seven diamonds.

MORRIS – One of Samantha Elmore’s first words was “flowers.”

The 22-month-old from Channahon loves flowers, her mother Stephanie Friel said, so when she went shopping for Samantha’s Corn Festival Baby Show dress, she found the perfect one – a white background with pink, coral and red flowers.

“Flowers ... shiny ... she’ll love it,” Friel said were her thoughts when she spied the dress.

On stage Sunday at the Baby Show, Samantha danced and blew the judges kisses.

Her family has participated in the show for years, and all three kids were in it this year, including Camden, 5, and Connor, 3.

“They get excited over it,” said Samantha’s father, Scott Elmore. “They like getting dressed up. It’s a fun time for everybody.”

The show was held Sunday afternoon in the auditorium at Morris Community High School. The age groups were 6 to 12 months old; 13 to 23 months old; 2 years old; 3 years old and 4 and 5 years old.

“It’s going very smoothly,” Baby Show Chairwoman Heidi Kindlespire said midafternoon.

There were 176 entered in the show and another 116 entered in the Baby Photo Contest, Kindlespire said, which was judged last week.

We Care event raises money to help those in need

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – We Care at the Farm was a huge improvement over last year’s football tailgating-themed event, according to Executive Director Denise Gaska.

“It was the largest fundraiser in We Care history,” Gaska said Sunday night.

The event brought in more than $12,000 to be used toward various programs offered by We Care of Grundy County, including the food pantry, rent assistance and utility assistance.

“It’s great,” Gaska said out at the farm Sunday afternoon.

“We have so many people, we are running out of things. It’s a wonderful turnout.”

6 Local Girl Scout works with city to create dog park

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Local pooches could have a new place to play now that the city is pursuing the creation of a dog park in Morris.

Helming the project, however, would be local Girl Scout Emily Lamaze, who wants to design and construct the park as part of her gold award achievement project for the organization.

Lamaze and her parents presented their tentative park plans to the Parks and Annexation Committee on Monday.

“The concept is to have a park where dogs can run and play in a fenced-in area,” Lamaze told the aldermen. “Dog owners who don’t have yard space can bring their dogs there and let them run.”

Lamaze proposed the park be located near the White Oak Elementary baseball diamonds, providing the committee with two optional park locations.

However, the committee preferred constructing the park on a plot of city-owned green space on Michael Drive near Lion’s Park.

“We’ve talked about that spot, and we think it would work out nicely,” alderman Julian Houston said.

The city would install fences, benches, a small parking lot, a sidewalk and a spigot

for refilling water bowls, but the design and some of the installation would be completed

by Lamaze, as her project requires.

Putting in the parking lots, fence posts, spigot and sidewalk could be completed by the public works crews, Mayor Richard Kopczick.

The park would be divided into two sections – one for large dogs, the other for small dogs.

In her proposal, Lamaze suggested charging a small fee for pet owners. She also included a list of rules all owners would have to abide to help keep waste and other issues under control.

Kopczick said one of the few problems would be in enforcement as the city does not have a park district. Without a park district, the city is without park police officers who could watch the park regularly.

“We can’t dedicate a police officer or someone to be there every day,” Kopczick said.

While the aldermen applauded the idea, they asked Lamaze to research the Michael Drive location further and develop a new, detailed design. They also asked for a cost estimate so the park could be incorporated into next year’s budget.

Lamaze, a sophomore in high school, said she has until her senior year to complete the project.

MORRIS – The John Martin Steele VFW Post in Morris is inviting local veterans to participate in the Grundy County Corn Festival Parade.

Veterans will walk at the start of the parade behind the Morris Color Guard. The parade is an opportunity for veterans to participate and for the community to see how many veterans there are in Grundy County, according to a VFW news release.

MORRIS – Emma Johnson, a 9-year-old Saratoga student, loves to read, especially the “Dork Diaries” series.

“I like ‘Dork Diaries,’ and I like to read books about dogs,” Johnson said. “I love dogs.”

Johnson and more than 50 other grade-school students in the 75th state House district were rewarded for their summer reading by attending a party Saturday on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn by state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield.

“I want to thank the parents for believing in their kids,” Anthony said at the Saturday ceremony where kids were treated to ice cream and received a certificate and a letter from Anthony. “My wife and I instill in our kids that reading is important. We even read to them when they were in the womb.”

Debra Johnson said her daughter Emma, participates in other reading programs as well, including one at the Morris Library, and said Emma enjoys reading and being recognized for it.

Kyler Krull, a 6-year-old Mazon Grade School student, prefers a little more action in his books and said he loves the “Transformers” books his mom reads to him.

The students needed to read 10 books on their summer vacation from school, but many didn’t stop at 10.

MORRIS – Residents wanting to run for local office in 2015 can pick up candidate petitions and begin collecting signatures.

Various city offices, school board positions and township offices will be on the April ballot.

This is the first year the Grundy County Clerk’s office is administering school board petitions, rather than individual school districts, County Clerk and Recorder Lana Phillips said, a notable change for those accustomed to going through their schools for petitions.

All registered voters within the school district who meet county residency requirements are eligible to run.

Packets can be picked up from the clerk’s office beginning Tuesday. The packet includes a statement of candidacy, an optional loyalty oath and candidate petition papers.

Phillips said each school board candidate must collect at least 50 signatures to run.

Rezin endorses Anthony for state rep MORRIS – State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, endorsed state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, at a news conference at Morris City Hall on Monday.

“As a former Sheriff’s deputy with Kendall County, state Rep. John Anthony has worked hard with various organizations on legislation to make sure our children and neighborhoods are safe and has been working very closely with me on school funding that I find very important, too, not just the 75th District,

but also to the state,” Rezin said.

Anthony will face Democrat Martha Shugart of Morris in the Nov. 4 election.

Rezin said it is important to be united to properly fix important issues like education.

Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, also was on hand and said the Republican Party is unified now more than ever.
