MORRIS – Shanna Enger, a lifelong Morris resident, is watching her dream grow, board by board, as her Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity home is built.

Enger and her two children, Bryson and Bridget, will be moving into the home that broke ground in May as soon as the project is finished, which Executive Director Sarah Peterson said hopefully will be in time for Christmas.

Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity is the recipient of the First Midwest Bank’s Draw Down fundraiser at the Grundy County Corn Festival this year.

“The goal is to have them in

by Christmas. We are still raising funds to finish the house,” Peterson said. “We wanted the house started and wrapped with insulation before winter, and we are at that point.”

Enger has worked for the past 16 years at R-Place Restaurant where she is a prep cook, and is excited that she will be able to have a house she can call her own. Peterson said Enger has been on hand with her children, actively working toward finishing the home whenever she is not at her job.

“It’s great to see the kids here [at the house] working with her so they can see what goes into having a home,” Peterson said.

The Enger home is the 12th built by Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity in Grundy County and the fourth in the Hancock Page subdivision along North Street.

The subdivision is named after founding Grundy-Three Rivers members Randy Hancock and Janet Page, and is on the old paper mill property on the east side of Morris.

The projected cost of the Enger family home was $85,000.

Morris City Council voted, 8-1, Monday night to approve an annexation agreement between the city of Morris and Costco Wholesale Corporation and K&S Real Estate LLC for the annexation of about 140 acres in Saratoga Township along North Lisbon Road in Grundy County.

Costco will spend an estimated $120 million for a 255,996-square-foot meat processing plant, Costco Development Manager Ted Johnson told the council Monday night.

The site plan recently was downsized, but Costco intends to expand the facility eventually, he said.

“We tried out a larger shell, and the (cost) numbers just got crazy,” Johnson said. “When we decide to expand, we’ll come back to the city and do this process again.”

The building will employ about 155 people and approximately 220 during peak times of the year.

Johnson said the plant would be producing more product around Labor Day, Fourth of July and Memorial Day. The meat processing plant will function best when paired with an adjoining depot, Johnson said.

In the public hearing, Alderman Randy Larson’s expressed concerns about the city’s ability to absorb sewage discharge from the plant.

The Water and Sewer Committee, particularly Aldermen Julian Houston and Duane Wolfe, tried to assure Larson that Morris City Engineer Larry Good has done extensive work on the project since 2013 toward the goal of ensuring environmental safety.

Downtown street work to be done by Corn Fest City aims to address safety concerns with costs possibly less than expected

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Street maintenance in downtown Morris should be completed Tuesday, just in time for the 67th annual Grundy County Corn Festival, which begins Wednesday and ends Sunday.

The city sets out each year to finish downtown portions of its street maintenance program before Corn Fest, Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

“We don’t want people

stumbling into a hole or tripping during the festivities,” he said.

The target completion date was Saturday. Morris City Engineer Guy Christensen said paving downtown was completed Saturday, which allows for striping to be done Tuesday morning.

“We wanted to get all downtown work that would be visible completed by Corn Fest,” Christensen said.

City council voted, 7-0, in July to award a bid of $69,595.91

– nearly $8,000 less than estimated – to AC Pavement Striping for restriping and sealing services across the city. Christensen said the company was striping all of Monday.

Improvements on Washington and Liberty streets are complete, aside from some alley work.

The majority of work to other Morris streets is finished, with the exception of some patching needed on the northwest side of the city.

Christensen said he won’t be sure of the exact cost for the 2015 street maintenance program until it’s completed, but said it would come in near the contracted price. As the work is done, Christensen collects the data and adds up the prices per ton of material used.

The mock bedroom has been used at various forums during the last year to show parents what signs of drug use and other destructive habits could be hiding “in plain sight” within their child’s bedroom, according to a news release from event organizers.

The trailer will be open to the public (adults only) for viewing.

The trailer is set up like a teen’s bedroom to educate parents, grandparents, guardians or any adults what to look for in their teen’s bedroom if they should suspect that the teen might be engaging in drug and substance abuse or risky behavior, according to the news release.

The trailer is owned by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and operated by the Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force.

The room will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Liberty Street near the Grundy County Sheriff’s pork chop stand.

In addition to having trailer presentations, Sgt. Michael Weber from the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad will be present to talk about the latest drug trends, and there will be drug dog presentations from local law enforcement agencies, according to the news release.

Award-winning poet CK Williams dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOPEWELL, N.J. – C.K. Williams, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet known for his long, conversational lines of verse that brought frequent comparisons to Walt Whitman, has died at age 78.

Williams was an impassioned observer of war, alienation and the cancer that eventually took his life on Sunday at his home in Hopewell. His death was confirmed Monday by author Joyce Carol Oates, a close friend and former colleague at Princeton University.

Williams won the poetry

Pulitzer in 2000 for “Repair” and the National Book Award for his 2003 work “The Singing.”

He also was a translator of Greek drama and an author of the memoir “Misgivings.” A new Williams book, “Selected Later Poems,” is scheduled to come out Tuesday.

According to Farrar, Straus & Giroux president and publisher Jonathan Galassi, Williams had completed another new poetry collection, “Falling Ill,” just before his death. No publication date for that has been set.

Famed Spanish literary agent Carmen Balcells dead at age 85 The ASSOCIATED PRESS MADRID – Carmen Balcells, a literary agent who represented some of the biggest names in 20th-century Spanish literature and several Nobel laureates, has died. She was 85.

Her agency said Balcells died Sunday in Barcelona. It did not give a cause of death.

Balcells, who never attended university, created her Barcelona-based agency in 1956. She found her first success with Latin American writers, including Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda.

Amid growing international prestige, Balcells turned to Spanish authors and represented Camilo Jose Cela, among others.

Her clients included intellectuals and popular writers, and huge sales by the authors made her a powerful figure in Spanish literary circles.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – One of the latest techniques for treating blockages in the leg arteries is being performed in the cath lab at Morris Hospital. It involves the use of a drug-coated balloon during peripheral artery angioplasty and shows promise for reducing recurring blockages in the leg arteries.

Cardiologists at Morris Hospital began performing the technique just a few months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Medtronic’s In.Pact Admiral drug-coated balloon. Cardiologists Syed Ahmed, M.D., Govind Ramadurai, M.D., and Athar Saeed, M.D., have all treated peripheral artery disease with drug-coated balloons in the Morris Hospital cath lab.

“One of the challenges we have with treating blockages in the leg arteries is the high rate of restenosis, or recurring narrowing, following traditional balloon angioplasty,” Ramadurai said. “Now we have the availability of the new drug-coated balloon, which releases the drug paclitaxel into the vessel wall, preventing the build-up of scar tissue and restenosis. Clinical trials show a recurrence rate of just 10 to 12 percent with this technique, compared to a 70 to 80 percent recurrence with a regular balloon.”

The tip of the catheter has a very small balloon on the end and when it reaches the blockage in the leg artery, the balloon is filled with air, widening the artery and improving blood flow. The drug is released when the balloon is expanded.

“The American Heart Association estimates that PAD, a life-threatening condition, affects at least 8 million Americans by narrowing arteries and reducing blood flow to the limbs,” Ahmed said. “The advantage of drug-coated over conventional balloon is that while the balloon opens up the clogged vessel, the drug released during balloon inflation prevents re-narrowing of the vessel.”

While the drug-eluding balloon only is approved for use in blockages in the upper leg, Dr. Ramadurai expects 20 to 30 percent of patients treated

for peripheral artery disease will benefit from the new technique. In addition to reducing the need for repeat procedures, the new technique may offer an alternate solution for people faced with surgical treatment for a blocked leg artery.

“The use of drug coated balloons is a new, first-line therapy for treating blockages in the peripheral arteries, without closing the door to other treatment options down the road,” adds Dr. Saeed.

Peripheral artery disease occurs when fatty material builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, most commonly the legs, limiting blood flow. In addition to increasing the risk of sudden heart attack or stroke, blocked blood supply to the muscles and tissues in the legs can cause recurrent and painful muscle cramping and numbness, in addition to increased risk of infection in the blocked limb. Severely blocked blood flow can result in gangrene, leading to leg amputation. An estimated 8 to 12 million people in the United States have peripheral artery disease.

“This event will help to uncover the unique natural setting of Arroyo Trails,” said Daryl Cole, Channahon Park District superintendent of Park Planning. “The work that has been completed by LyondellBasell is at the gateway to Arroyo Trails and these projects will improve the appearance of the area.”

The Company’s 16th annual Global Care Day encourages LyondellBasell employees around the world to collectively participate in community service projects on the same day. This year, approximately 2,600 volunteers invested their time and talents on projects in the areas of education,

health and the environment – the core focuses of the company’s Elements of Engagement community philanthropy strategy.

“Global Care Day provides our employees with a great sense of pride for giving back to our surrounding communities,” said Ahmad Hayek, Morris complex engineer.

“The Channahon Park District has been a great partner over the years. We hope our work helps illustrate to youth the importance of environmental sustainability, while enhancing the park as an educational outlet for the importance of physical fitness.”

Arroyo Trails Park is a unique environmental setting which strives to reintroduce children and families to nature.

The volunteer work performed by LyondellBasell employees is crucial to the park’s development.

Senior Night a success story for Morris

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – All eight of the seniors on the Morris boys soccer roster were in the starting lineup Tuesday night as the Redskins celebrated Senior Night.

Matt Borgstrom, Max Dudley, Evan Gagnon, Brian Haldorson, Enrique Luna, Hernan

Gutierrez, Brian Pfaff and Brandon Vasquez were all honored before the game and all have been four-year members of the program.

Borgstrom was in goal and made a number of saves in the 5-0 win over Coal City, while Haldorson had two goals and Luna added one. Dudley, Gagnon and Pfaff were key figures on the defense, while Gutier-

rez and Vasquez helped control the ball on offense for the Redskins, who improved to 5-6 with the win.

“This was a perfect Senior Night,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “All of the seniors started, and they all played well. It was nice to see Brian Haldorson get a couple of goals and Enrique get one.

“The band came out and

played on the field at halftime.

It was just a very good night all around.”

Morris, playing the first of four games this week, started a little slowly, but once the Redskins got going, the goals kept coming. The Redskins host DeKalb on Tuesday before traveling to Geneseo on Thursday and visiting Minooka on Saturday for a noon contest.

Conner Shaw started things off scoring wise with a goal with 18:16 remaining in the first half. Haldorson followed with his first goal of the game with 15:39 to play in the half, and Luna scored with 5:25 to play to give the Redskins a 3-0 halftime lead. With 7:45 left in the first half, Pfaff got off a

NEWARK – In a rematch of last year’s Class 1A Westminster Christian Sectional, the Newark volleyball team was unable to exact revenge on Elgin Harvest Christian as the Lady Norse dropped a 15-25, 25-12, 25-22 nonconference decision Thursday.

Maddie Friestad led Newark (6-3) with nine kills and three aces, while Nikki Kala had five kills.

John Fox declined to elaborate on the Bears signalcaller’s injury, recovery

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – John Fox said Monday that tests revealed Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has a strained hamstring, but wouldn’t put a timetable on Cutler’s return.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Cutler will miss “at least” the next two weeks, which includes games in Seattle and at home vs. the Raiders.

Cutler suffered the injury trying to make a tackle after he threw an interception in the second quarter, which was returned for a touchdown in the Bears’ 48-23 loss.

“I think any time it’s not real severe I think it’s good news,” Fox said. “We’ll just evaluate it going forward. We have game-planning tonight for Seattle and tomorrow and players are back in on Wednesday.”

The Bears will have to release an injury report Wednesday, which is when Fox said they’ll have more information about Cutler’s injury.

When asked about Cutler’s chances to practice Wednesday, Fox responded, “I don’t know. Is it going to be heads or tails Sunday? I don’t know.”

Prior to the injury, Cutler had completed all eight of his passes, including 48-yard touchdown.

Jimmy Clausen replaced Cutler and was 14 of 23 passing for 121 yards and one interception.

“Well for the individual, I don’t think there’s any adjustment,” Eddie Royal said about the switch at quarterback.

“You still got to do your part once the play is called. You’ve got to execute that play the best you can. Individually, for me, I didn’t have to do anything different. I think Jimmy did a great job coming in. It was a tough spot to be in. And I think Jimmy did great.”

Cash the club ace (necessary if declarer had a singleton club and could make a loser-on-loser play) before leading your lowest spade – then hope partner thinks to ruff with his heart eight to force a trump promotion.

It has made me sad to see her go through the same pattern with him for so many years.
