Flora was born on April 28, 1935, in Cambria, to Richard and Pearl (Jones) Akins. While married to William “Bill” Robinson, together they had three beautiful daughters, Janice, Marsha and Renae.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Rick Wawczak of Hayward, WI and Renae and Steve Burkhead of Seneca, IL; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, June and Leo Severs of Cambria; brother, Billy Akins of Cambria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Flora was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Marsha Robinson; and brother, Leslie Akins.

She was a graduate of Herrin High School. Flora, or “Sally” as she was fondly known by her family and close friends, was quite an Elvis aficionado. She was always one to serve or wait on others, having been a waitress most of her life at various restaurants.

Novelist Jackie Collins dies of cancer

By ANDREW DALTON The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – The novels of Jackie Collins dramatized the lives of the most elite people and places, but they were read by everyone, everywhere – from airports to beaches to, sometimes, under the covers with a flashlight to hide from disapproving parents and partners.

Collins, whose books like “Hollywood Wives” were as brazenly sexual as they were proudly pulpy, sold hundreds of millions of novels in dozens of countries, and it led to a level of wealth, celebrity and glamour that in many ways surpassed her own characters, and arguably matched that of her older sister, “Dynasty” actress Joan Collins.

Collins died at age 77 of breast cancer in Los Angeles, her publicist Melody Korenbrot said.

Collins’ tales of sex, glamour, power and more sex were a forerunner to the culture of “Desperate Housewives” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” Her books provided at first more than some wanted to hear, but she became the kind of author from whom readers could never get enough, providing forbidden fodder for housewives and for teenagers raiding their parents’ bookshelves.

Collins told The Associated Press in a 2011 interview that she “never felt bashful writing about sex.”

“As a writer, you can never think about who is going to read your books. Is it going to be my mom? My children?

A lot of people say to me, ‘Oh, I read your books under a cover with a flashlight when I was really young and I learned everything I know about sex from you.’ ” She was born Jacqueline Jill Collins in London in 1937, the daughter of a theatrical agent and a dance teacher.

Her first novel, “The World is Full of Married Men,” was a story of sex and show business set in “Swinging London” in the mid-1960s.

“Barbara Cartland said to me, ‘Oh, Miss Collins, your books are filthy and disgusting and you are responsible for all the perverts in England,’ ” Collins told Porter Magazine in 2014. “I pause for a few moments and said, ‘Thank you.’ ” Collins followed in the 1970s with books like “The World is Full of Divorced Women” and “Lovers & Gamblers.”

By the 1980s, she had moved to Los Angeles and turned out the 1983 novel she is still best known for, “Hollywood Wives,” which has sold more than 15 million copies. It came at the same time that her sister hit the height of her own fame on “Dynasty.”

“Dynasty” producer Aaron Spelling would also produce the 1985 hit TV miniseries of “Hollywood Wives,” which featured Candice Bergen, Angie Dickinson and Suzanne Somers, among others.

It led to follow-ups like “Hollywood Husbands” (1986), “Hollywood Kids” (1984) and “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” (2001).

The books made Jackie

Collins a celebrity in her own right, and she loved the part, looking, living and behaving more like an actress than an author. In many ways, her own persona was her greatest character.

Collins embraced Twitter in her later years, and she loved the engagement with her over 150,000 followers.

“I love tweeting. I have so much fun with my fans,” she told the AP in 2011. “I’ve asked them for reviews. I answer people’s questions.

Sometimes I’ll do a little survey and say, ‘Who is hot this week?’ ” Many were using Twitter to mourn her Saturday night, including Oprah Winfrey, who Tweeted “RIP Jackie Collins. I always loved our interviews.”

Larry King tweeted that Collins was a “true talent, a beautiful being and a dear friend.”

Collins’ books didn’t stick strictly to Hollywood. She penned a series of mafia novels documenting the lives of the Santangelo family, focusing on its patriarch Gino and his daughter Lucky. She wrote nine novels based on the family that included her last, “The Santangelos,” published this year.

Collins told People magazine, which first reported

her death Saturday, in her final interview Sept. 14 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer over six years ago, but she had chosen to keep the news among family, confiding mainly in her three daughters, 54-year-old Tracy, 48-year-old Tiffany and 46-year-old Rory.

A family statement called Collins “a true inspiration, a trailblazer for women in fiction and a creative force.

She will live on through her characters but we already miss her beyond words.”

Collins was married twice, the second time to art gallery and nightclub owner Oscar Lerman in 1965. Lerman died in 1992. She was then engaged to Los Angeles businessman Frank Calcagnini, who died in 1998.

Asked by the AP in 2011 if she was dating anyone, Collins said “I have a man for every occasion.”

“When I was a kid growing up, I used to read my father’s Playboy and I’d see these guys and they had fantastic apartments and cars,” she said. “I have all of that now. Why would I want to hook myself up with one man when I’ve had two fantastic men in my life? One was my husband for over 20 years, and one was my fiance for six years.”

Homecoming started Sunday with a parade down Main Street at 2 p.m. This year’s grand marshal was Mark Victor, who was born and raised in Springfield. His parents were German Nazi Concentration camp survivors and education was always an important influence in his life.

Victor graduated from Illinois State University, worked in education for 33 years, including Seneca for those final 20 years. He also wasthe band director for 20 years at Seneca High School.

Quarterback Guth leads Redskins to victory

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In the first three weeks of the football season, most of the attention shown to the Morris offense went to the Redskin running game.

The backfield of Michael Gerischer, Michael Feeney and Keagan Sobol has been more than enough to give the Redskins a 2-1 record heading into Saturday’s game against Sterling.

After a 38-21 Northern Illinois Big 12 win Saturday over the previously unbeaten and No. 8-ranked Class 5A Golden Warriors, there’s a new player entering the conversation when the topic of the Morris offense comes up.

Quarterback Nathan Guth was efficient in guiding the Morris offense. He finished by completing 8 of 16 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He also put the exclamation mark on the win with a 25-yard touchdown run on 4th and 5 with 3:07 remaining.

His passing numbers may have been higher if it weren’t for a couple of drops by Morris receivers.

When Morris got the ball for the first time, the Redskins faced 3rd-and-10 and Guth connected with Cole Puckett for a 17-yard gain and a first down. On the next play, Sobol broke through the middle for a 28-yard gain and Feeney finished the drive off with a 30-yard touchdown run on the next play.

On the Redskins’ next drive, on 3rd-and-12, Guth again his Puckett for a 17yard gain an a first down to keep the drive alive. Later, on 3rd-and-5, a hard count by Guth drew Sterling offsides and made it 3rd-and-inches and he ran a sneak for three yards and a first down. He drew Sterling offsides again on 3rd-and-4, setting up a 29yard touchdown pass from Guth to Jake Webb.

“Their corners were playing pretty far off the ball and their safety was jumping to the receiver,” Guth said.

On Sterling’s next drive, the Morris defense stuffed quarterback Sterling Thornton for a one-yard gain on

4th-and-2 and the Redskins took over on their own 43.

On 3rd-and-7 from the Sterling 32, Guth had blood on his jersey and had to leave the game. Backup Ricky Del Favero came in and ran for a 22-yard gain to the 10 and, two plays later, a cleaned-up Guth hit Sobol in the flat for a five-yard touchdown and a 20-7 lead.

Morris got the ball to start the second half, and Feeney returned the kick 48 yards to the Sterling 42. On 4th-and-4 from the 36, Guth hit Delaney Stutzki for a 10-yard gain. On 2nd-and-5, Guth fumbled the snap, picked up the ball and ran. He gained 10 yards before he was hit and fumbled again, but the ball went right to Feeney, who ran the remaining 11 yards for a touchdown.

“That’s not in our playbook,” Guth smiled. “When that happened, we really got a feeling that this was our night.”

That touchdown put Morris (3-1) ahead 26-7, but Sterling (3-1) wasn’t done. Thornton had a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter to make it 26-21, and midway through the fourth, the Warriors got the ball back with a chance to take the lead.

own 32, Thornton dropped back to pass and rolled out to his left, Sobol chased after him and swatted the ball out of his hands. Payton Bruyn scooped it up and raced 22 yards for a touchdown to make it 32-21 with 6:07 to play.

“That was a game-changer,” Guth said about Bruyn’s scoop and score. “It got us going again.”

The Morris defense stopped a Sterling fake punt short on the next drive. On 4th-and-5 from the Sterling 25, Guth ran to the right and found nothing but open space as he scored a touchdown to cap the scoring.

“A lot of people have been talking about our running backs,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “But after tonight, they have to say we have a pretty good quarterback, too. Nathan had an excellent game and made some big plays.”

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – No Southwest Prairie Conference team has found an answer for the Oswego football program in 30 straight games, and Minooka was the latest statistic in the Panthers’ win streak on Saturday night.

Oswego scored its first two touchdowns in an 11-second span and the night would only get worse for Minooka as the Panthers went on to win 42-7, handing the Indians their first loss of the season.

“Offensively, we didn’t play very well. We didn’t do the things we were supposed to do,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “We need to play better. We’re 3-1. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ll bounce back. We got punched in the chin a little bit and we need to learn from it.”

After Oswego quarterback Steven Frank connected

on consecutive touchdown passes to Brice Robinson (22 yards) and Conor Morton (19 yards), Minooka (3-1, 1-1) responded with a 78-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Carnagio to Quintin Durov.

He caught the ball near midfield and sprinted along the Indians’ sideline untouched with 3:32 remaining in the opening quarter.

But the 14-7 score was as close as Minooka could get to Oswego.

The Indians turned the ball over three times on a pair of interceptions and a fumble and only reached the red zone once more after their lone touchdown.

Trailing 21-7, Minooka recovered an Oswego fumble at the start of the second half to get good field position at the Oswego 24.

But a pair of runs net a loss of 13 yards and a false start penalty created a third-

and-19 situation before Carnagio was sacked on fourth down.

Oswego’s Chad Marsh intercepted Carnagio and returned the ball 79 yards for a touchdown with 1:40 to play in the third quarter.

Frank (9 for 17,151 yards, 4 TDs, INT) scored on a 44-yard run – his fifth touchdown of the night – to cap the score, 42-7, and send the Panther starters to the sidelines for the night.

“We’re into the conference and getting into our groove,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “The second half was much better than the first half. Even though it was 217, we didn’t feel good about the type of 21-7 that we had.

Coal City defense gives up big yards in loss to Plano STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – Things didn’t start out well for the Coal City football team on Saturday afternoon, and they didn’t get any better as the game went on.

The Coalers (2-2, 1-1) fell behind Interstate Eight Conference Big rival Plano, 28-0, at the end of the first quarter, and the Reapers cruised to a 56-13 victory.

Plano’s offense was balanced, as the Reapers ran for 204 yards and threw for 274 more. Coal City. meanwhile, managed 98 yards on the ground and 43 through the air.

Cutler leaves game with hamstring injury Cardinals 48, Bears 23

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Jay Cutler left Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with a hamstring injury and did not return.

The injury occurred after Cutler threw an interception, which was returned for a touchdown. He made a diving attempt for a tackle and appeared to hit the ground hard with his shoulder and head, but the Bears announced a hamstring injury after halftime.

“It takes a while to run tests. Our medical people will inform me, and then I will inform you. But at this point, he’s got a pulled hamstring,” John Fox said after the game.

Before the pick, Cutler had completed all eight of his passes for 120 yards and a 48-yard touchdown to Josh Bellamy.

He also had three carries for 24 yards.

The pick-six gave the Cardinals a 28-14 lead. Jimmy Clausen replaced Cutler and threw an interception on the first drive of the second half.

Clausen finished the game completing 14-of-21 passes for 121 yards and a passer rating of 56.6 in the 48-23 loss to the Cardinals.

Penalties were a major issue on both sides of the ball, with the Bears’ offensive line committing six, but Matt Forte said that wasn’t because Cutler got hurt.

“It’s not on him for the

holding penalty or the offsides,” he said. “That’s just lack of focus on there. If we know the snap count, why jump offsides? Play’s going on, that’s just technique, we can’t hold out there. That puts us behind, 1st-and-20, and then we have to get those yards back.”

Special teams and defense got Clausen the ball with a short field late in the second quarter, but the offense settled for field goals, another failure that Forte did not pin on the quarterback switch.

“I don’t think it was because [Cutler] went out and Jimmy had to go in,” he said.

“We didn’t score there on the goal line, the penalties were killing us. Pre-snap penalties, post-snap penalties on first and second down is going to kill your drive. ... We were still trying to run the ball a little bit, establish that, too.

Then the passing game was opening up for us, but mistakes. Too many mistakes out there.”

Similar to a trend seen in the past when Cutler has gotten hurt, the defense struggled, too, but Pernell McPhee said that was a problem for the defense to sort out and wasn’t correlated to Cutler’s injury.

Lawmakers should decide how tax dollars spent SPRINGFIELD – It seems everyone is angry at the state of Illinois.

And one of the hottest is Danny Chasteen, who won $250,000 in the Illinois Lottery in July but, so far, has had to settle for an IOU. The factory foreman from Oglesby is none too happy.

“When you buy a winning lottery ticket, you ought to get paid,” Chasteen told me. “I paid $5 for that ticket and had to look at it four times before I convinced myself that I had just won $250,000. And then I got a call from the lottery department and was told they can’t pay me until the state passes a budget.”

So Chasteen has made a federal case out of it. He is suing the state.

A judge will decide whether the state should start forking over the dough.

An unfortunate part of the budget impasse our state now faces is that its judges – not lawmakers – are deciding how tax dollars are being spent.

That’s not the way things are supposed to work.

In June, Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed most of the budget passed by the state Legislature because it was $4 billion out of balance.

And we have been without a budget. A judge has stepped in and said state employees must get paid.

Also, judges are enforcing a dozen other agreements regarding funding for state programs.

And more lawsuits are being filed asking judges to order more spending.

In fact, state Comptroller Leslie Munger said recently that between the court orders, numerous judicial agreements and some statutory requirements, the state is fulfilling 90 percent of its financial obligations.

The General Assembly is supposed to be a deliberative body that sets priorities and develops policy.

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder The Legislature is allowing other branches of government to do the heavy lifting.

When the General Assembly passed a budget billions of dollars out of whack, it whined that the governor vetoed it rather than try to make cuts on his own.

And, increasingly, lawmakers have sat back and watched the judicial branch do its job for them by authorizing spending.

And what have legislators been doing? Looking busy, but accomplishing little.

Look no further than the measure passed by the Senate last week. It would increase state spending on welfare by $2 billion.

I don’t claim to be a math wizard, but anyone who ever has balanced a checkbook knows you can’t withdraw more than you have deposited.

In the case of the Senate, its latest measure – along with its original budget – arguably would put the state $6 billion into overdraft territory.

It’s the politics of gridlock.

Instead of making tough choices on a balanced budget, legislators are performing a charade and calling it governing.

We deserve a General Assembly that will work with the governor to make tough choices.

Instead, we have a legislative majority that wants others to make the tough calls.

We deserve better, and they know better.

Each day I get up and think I will write a week of columns in the morning, but I am happy if they are done by nightfall. However, this deal should be part of every bridge player’s repertoire at whatever time of day it is being played. It features lots of instructive material.

What should North respond after partner opens one spade if, first, West passes; and second, if West makes a takeout double? Next, what should West lead against four spades? Last, if West opts for a low diamond, what should happen after that?

In the auction, if it goes one spade – pass, North probably should just blaze away with a pre-emptive fourspade response. Typically his hand would include a singleton, but bidding fewer spades will not describe his hand better. If West doubles, North should bid four spades even quicker.

West has a tough lead. If his four honors will score tricks in the fullness of time, he should lead the spade ace and shift to a club. Here, though, he has to lead a diamond to give the defense a chance.

Then comes the key play: East must put up his diamond jack – bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high.

If South takes the trick and leads a trump to West’s ace, West should now play another low diamond. This gives East the lead for the critical heart shift, which gives the defenders four tricks.

No other defense works.

A very sad realization in today’s society is the prominence of disrespect, bullying and violence. Unfortunately, many of our children experience varying degrees of these negative behaviors. Combatting these behaviors is an extremely important goal for schools.

Many schools, including Saratoga, have a specific program in place to emphasize and teach our students about respect and positive behaviors.

At Saratoga, the foundation of our positive behavioral interventions and support (PBIS) program is the three building-wide expectations: Be responsible, be respectful and be ready. The social workers at Saratoga along with administration, the school psychologist and many teachers put together this program over the summer break.

There are four components to Saratoga’s PBIS: 1) behavior expectations; 2) teaching students about the expectations; 3) HAWK bucks; and 4) office discipline referrals. One of the ways that we are teaching students about our expectations is by showing them videos of appropriate and inappropri-

Throughout the school year the PBIS team will send updates and information home about our PBIS system. The school year is off and running, and at Saratoga, we are responsible, respectful and ready.

Changes in lifestyle can help combat prehypertension Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 20s.

My doctor says I have prehypertension. How seriously do I need to take this?

Dear Reader: Quite seriously. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or higher. Only a few decades ago, blood pressure lower than that was considered normal – or, at least, not worth worrying about.

But during the last 20 years, multiple long-term studies have shown that people with blood pressures higher than 120/80 but lower than 140/90 have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. That’s why we now have the term prehypertension, which describes blood pressures between 120/80 and 139/89.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff A recent study in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology included nearly 2,500 men and women.

They were aged 18 to 30 years when the study began.

Researchers measured their blood pressures seven times over the next 25 years. Near the end of the study, they had heart-imaging tests.

The researchers found that people who had prehypertension when they were between the ages of 18 and 30 were more likely to have signs of heart disease in middle age.

Every adult should get their blood pressure checked

at least once per year. You don’t have to see a doctor to do it. Many drugstores have blood pressure machines you can use for free, or take advantage of free health screenings at work or in your community. You can also purchase a home blood pressure monitoring machine. They are accurate and inexpensive.

The best and easiest to use involve a cuff around your upper arm (as in the doctor’s office) and automatically take your blood pressure. You just sit there.

Now that you know your blood pressure is slightly elevated, lifestyle changes can help to get it back under control: First, if you smoke, make quitting your top priority.

Next, improve your diet

and exercise habits. These changes will help dial back your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart problems and stroke later on.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• Make vegetables and fruits half of every meal.

• The other half should contain healthy protein and whole-grain carbohydrates.

• Reduce salt intake. Use a little less salt every day to help your taste buds adjust.

• Drink water instead of sugary beverages.

• Be as physically active as you can all day.

• Get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

Some young people with prehypertension probably could benefit from drug treat-

ment to lower blood pressure.

That might be something to discuss with your doctor if lifestyle changes don’t have enough of an impact.

When I graduated medical school, it seemed most doctors didn’t start really worrying about blood pressure until it was 160/100 or higher.

As I’ve said, now we start worrying when it’s higher than 120/80. Why the change?

Because scientific studies involving literally millions of people over many decades has taught us when we should worry, and given us tools (lifestyle changes, medicines) that reduce the risk.

No public drinking allowed at Corn Festival Second year of policy’s institution

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A liquor policy that upon being announced caused a bit of public disagreement during the 2014 Grundy County Corn Festival is returning for this year’s fest, the 67th annual, which begins Tuesday and ends Sunday.

“There will be open alcohol only in designated areas,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said. “They are fenced in with barriers around them. They’re easily identifiable.”

No open alcohol will be permitted in public, and any person caught drinking on city streets or sidewalks will receive a citation carrying a $50 fine.

The rule will be enforced

every day of the festival, without exception. That includes during live music concerts and other entertainment events held on public streets.

All liquor establishments will be responsible for keeping alcohol within their doors. If a customer is caught leaving a bar with liquor, officers will speak with the owner or manager, and make sure bars have security personnel stationed at the door.

“All establishments that had someone stationed at their doors last year didn’t have a problem,” Dite said. “They also have to remind people not to enter with open alcohol.”

Dite said the rule was put in place last year after establishments were unsuccessful in keeping large amounts of alco-

hol out of the public. Littering also left excessive bottles and cans on city streets.

Open alcohol in streets and sidewalks leads to underage drinking because intermingling prevents enforcement of the law, he said, adding that the rule makes Corn Festival more family friendly.

Eight people were cited in the entirety of last year’s Corn Festival, the first year the rule

was in place.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said it was a successful rule change, estimating that the number of complaints of public drinking for the entire Corn Festival was less than in one evening in previous years.

“Last year, we had the best weather I can remember, which usually means more people,” Kopczick said. “Families felt safer.”

painted and jumped in the bounce houses. Tom Tesdal took groups on hayrack rides around the property, while kids ran around the farm with their scavenger hunt cards, seeking the sticker they needed for their cards in order to get a prize.

“Finding the mushroom statue was the hardest because it was hiding behind a tree and it was very small,” said Kylie Williams, 10, of Morris.

In the front yard, Bonnie Latta, owner of Bone-ifide Care, assembled dogs in a circle and played music to begin a game of musical dogs. The last dog to sit when the music stopped was out, with Tank, a German shepherd/husky mix winning the game. Tank’s owner, Bill Easson of Morris, accepted the dog’s prize of toys, treats and dog tea.

Minooka ‘painted blue’ over weekend, supporting police

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The streets of Minooka were lined Saturday with the color blue, while fences and trees around the police station on the corner of Wabena and McEvilly roads were filled with banners, balloons and ribbons – all to show support to the Minooka Police Department.

Laura Reed created an event for Saturday on Facebook called “Paint Minooka BLUE” at the Minooka Community Center, where volunteers cut blue plastic tablecloths into strips, blew up balloons and created posters to don the streets with blue in response to the new Sept. 19 National Thank a Police Officer Day. “I saw an idea online where people were doing this in other communities, and with the recent events going on with the police, I wanted to do something,” Reed said. “This is a safe town, and it seems like the police can’t do anything without threats, so it’s time to start showing support.”

What Reed was seeing online was a part of the Illinois Auxiliary-Wives Behind the Badge campaign called Paint Illinois Blue.

There have been 83 deaths of law enforcement officers in the line of duty in 2015, according to a news release from the group. The organization wishes to serve as a positive voice for all law enforcement in communities across the nation with events like Paint Illinois Blue.

“This fundraiser took off more than we expected. Our goal was 50 shirts, or $750, and the last time I checked we had sold over $9,000 in shirts,” said Candace Battung, local Illinois Auxiliary-Wives Behind the Badge volunteer. “The Minooka 201 School District and local McDonald’s also changed their signs to support the cause.”

With the statewide awareness, Reed decided to piggyback on the group’s efforts by showing similar support in Minooka.

After the ribbons were cut and signs were made, the volunteers hit the town Saturday to tie bows on poles and trees, as well as put up signs and balloons.

Member of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorer program, Dylan Blough, 14, his brother Hunter Blough, 12, and mother Michelle Urtz of Minooka cut ribbons for more than 90 minutes.

“I had a great-grandpa who was an officer for the Chicago Police Department for 33 years,” Dylan Blough said. He said he was taking part because he wants police “to know they are important and that we are behind them.”

Rain totals were not consistent for area farmers across the county, with some areas receiving 9 inches one week, while farmers on the other end of the county only got a couple of tenths of an inch of rain, according to Mazon farmer Tammy Halterman.

“Morris got 9 inches one week. The next week, when the Coal City tornado happened, we got 10 inches and Morris didn’t,” Halterman said. “On top of the rain, we are seeing wind damage in
