MORRIS – Tuesday was the first day petitions could be pulled for the 2016 elections, and as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, all but one petition pulled in Grundy County was Republican.

In Grundy County, offices up next year include circuit clerk, state’s attorney, coroner and county board members District 1, 2 and 3 with three seats up per district, as well as precinct committeemen who are elected in the March primary.

Current Morris First Ward Alderman Don Hansen pulled a petition to run for a Grundy County Board seat in District 1 as a Republican. Hansen did not immediately return a call for comment.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter, a Republican, had pulled a petition to run for re-election as a District 1 board member. Mireya Martin, also a Republican, pulled a petition to run for District 2 board member.

But first out of all was Callahan, who said it wasn’t his goal to be first to pull a petition

but planned to do it Tuesday so he did it as early as he could.

Callahan is seeking a fifth term as coroner.

“It’s exciting to pull a petition,” Callahan said. “It’s part of the process. I’m looking forward to running.”

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Angela McDonald was the lone Democrat to pull a petition Tuesday. She is running for precinct committeeman.

The primary election is March 15. The last day the County Clerk’s office will accept petition filing for the primary is Nov. 30 of this year.

The general election is Nov. 8, 2016.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Family photos along the mantel in a Minooka home show a happy family of five, but the family of four that lives there is still waiting for their fifth member to arrive in January.

“We always said we would adopt someday. I came home from work one day in March and Amy said, ‘We need to adopt now,’ ” Nate Braun said.

For Nate and Amy Braun, adoption was a topic discussed even before marriage five years ago; however, Amy said it was her faith that led her to the timing.

“God put it strongly on my heart to adopt. We considered foster to adopt options in the United States, but having two boys, we always wanted a little girl and knowing that China has so many girl babies abandoned, we felt that was where the need was greatest,” Amy said.

The Brauns began looking at different websites to find adoptable girls in China. Once they saw Huai Xi Meng, they knew that was their daughter.

Faith Huai, as they will name her, has a disability called agenesis of the corpus callosum. She has had surgeries for a cleft palate and tongue, and

Nate said from application to their daughter being theirs, it is going to cost $35,000. The expense came at a pivotal time of the Brauns’ life, with Nate moving from a full-time posi-

tion as an engineer in marketing to working part time and taking a resident path of ministry.

The couple had to get creative with raising funds and since March has raised $26,000,

but is still $9,000 short. The pair decided on a shoe fundraiser with Funds2orgs.org, which takes in used shoes, restores them and donates the shoes to developing countries.

“It’s been about seven days and we already have 800 pounds of shoes donated. I have 14 pickups [Tuesday] afternoon in Naperville and 10 in Orland Park [on Wednesday]. People also have been dropping off donations,” Amy said.

Nate said the couple will receive 40 cents per pound, and will need 15,000 pounds to reach their final goal.

“As long as we hit the 2,500 pound required amount for funds2orgs to drive up and pick up the shoes for free, we are good,” he said.

Dan Condreay of Shorewood had Nate come to his small group from Community Christian Church, where Nate also works, to speak to the group about the mission, and ended up with a large shoe donation.

“We consider this as a mission as Christians. What they are doing supports the reason for being here,” Condreay said.

The Brauns have had an outpouring of support from people they have never met. A church in Alabama called Amy to let her know they saw her posts on

Chapin’s closes after 11 years in Morris

MORRIS – After operating for 11 years on Liberty Street, Chapin’s has closed.

Owners Dianne and Scott Breslar announced the decision Monday in a post on Facebook addressed to “Our Dear Friends” that thanked their many customers who’ve shared their lives with them, and many local philanthropic organizations they have sponsored.

“As many of you may know, we have had family health issues that we have quietly dealt with, while trying to continue providing the quality service that has been our ongoing goal,” read the statement.

“We feel that it is in our best interest, and yours, to pass the baton to younger, more energetic and proven entrepreneurs that have a vision of service that is equal, if not greater than ours and who plan to deliver it in a distinctive way, worthy of

your patronage and loyalty,” the post continued.

The Breslars did not immediate return calls Tuesday.

Grundy County Chamber Executive Director Caroline Portlock said she still remembers the ribbon-cutting for Chapin’s. She said the Breslars have been active members of the community. She said she admired their ability to think ahead about the business, their family and the community.

The Breslars will continue to operate Chapin’s East Banquets and Catering and Twin Rail Pub in Minooka, according to their statement.

“It’s a move some business people neglect to make,” Portlock said. “To turn the reigns over. If they feel they’ve done as much as they can at that location, I can certainly understand that.”

Maura Kenny and John Mathias, owners of Big Fish Grille in Wilmington, took over the former Chapin’s location Tuesday, which will be closed

for a few weeks. Kenny said the goal is to debut as Chop Shop Grille by the start of Grundy County Corn Festival, which is Sept. 20, or Oct. 1 at the latest.

The Chop Shop Grille will be a steakhouse featuring a woodfired grill and great wines, Kenny said.

“The Breslars are pillars in the community,” Kenny said.

“They wanted someone [to take over who is] local who they’re comfortable with.”

Berger said she isn’t sure if the drive was carried to Gardner by a tornado or if it fell out of some items the family was able to save and took to Gardner to store.

MORRIS – The Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 63 has begun its annual telephone solicitation.

M.A.P. represents some Morris officers for the purpose of collective bargaining and other legal services.

Persons making the phone calls are not Morris police officers, nor are they members of the Morris Police Department, according to a news release from Morris Police Chief Brent Dite.

Persons making the phone calls are representatives of M.A.P., and the donations do not go to the Morris Police Department. Donations collected by M.A.P. help fund

the services that M.A.P. provides.

Additionally, a local business received a phone call from a subject who identified himself as Jim Williams with Morris police.

The Morris Police Department does not have an employee with that name, and the Morris Police Department does not conduct phone solicitation.

It was determined Williams was calling on behalf of M.A.P, according to the release. Typically, the telephone solicitation lasts about two to three weeks.

By 5:30 a.m., more people were chiming in letting her know that the man in the photo was Kenny Berger, a manager at the Morris Wal-Mart who lost his home in the EF3 tornado that hit Coal City on June 22. Teresa Smart messaged Tiffany Berger and got the address of where she is staying in Morris while the family finds a new home.

She sent it off, along with a special plaque her 7-year-old son, Gavin, picked out for the Berger family.

GARDNER – Like many young boys, 12-year-old Tristen Smart of Gardner enjoys riding his bicycle and often uses it to get around.

Last week, as he was riding to a friend’s house, he looked down and saw a flash drive laying along the side of the road. He decided to pick it up and head back home to find out what was on it.

“I picked it up and brought it to my mom because I thought it might be important to someone,” he said.

His mother, Teresa Smart, said when Tristen came in the house, he asked if she could put the drive in the computer to see if they could find out who the device belonged to.

“We saw there were a lot of pictures on there, and we didn’t recognize the people in them,” Teresa Smart said.

“I’ve lost some of my pictures from a phone, and I know no one would just throw away pictures.”

Unsure where to turn, on Friday she decided to put up one of the pictures on a Facebook group page called “People Helping People,” a closed group page with more than 2,700 members, mostly from the Grundy County area.

Self-help guru Wayne W. Dyer dies

Dyer, who became the pied piper of the self-help movement with the 1976 publication of his runaway best-seller, “Your Erroneous Zones: Step-By-Step Advice for Escaping the Trap of Negative Thinking and Taking Control of Your Life,” has died at age 75.

Dyer, who published more than 40 books, including such best-selling titles as “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Pulling Your Own Strings,” died Sunday at his home in Hawaii. The cause was a heart attack, his publicist, Lindsay McGinty, told The Associated Press.

Although he had been diagnosed with leukemia, Dyer remained active until his death,

recently lecturing in Australia and New Zealand.

“Wayne has left his body, passing away through the night. He always said he couldn’t wait for this next adventure to begin and had no fear of dying,” his family said in a statement posted on his Facebook page. “Our hearts are broken, but we smile to think of how much our scurvy elephant will enjoy the other side.”

The prolific author and avuncular public speaker counted such celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra and fellow self-helpguru Tony Robbins among his friends, and tributes from them and others poured across the Internet.

“The world has lost an incredible man,” said Ellen De-

Generes, who posted a photo on Twitter of Dyer officiating at her wedding to Portia de Rossi.

Winfrey, who interviewed him often, said, “It was always a pleasure to talk to Dr. Wayne W. Dyer about life’s big questions.”

He also was a popular figure on public radio and television programs, and his website said 10 PBS specials he took part in over the years raised more than $250 million for public television.

A Detroit native, Dyer earned a doctorate in educational counseling from Michigan’s Wayne State University before going on to teach at St. John’s University in New York.

He would later say it was his teaching and work as a clinical

psychologist that inspired him to write his first book, “Your Erroneous Zones,” in which he exhorted readers to believe in themselves, take chances and not be afraid to risk failure in pursuit of happiness.

He believed so strongly in its content that he drove across the country selling it out of the trunk of his car until it caught on and topped The New York Times best-seller list. To date it has sold 60 million copies, according to Hay House, making it one of the most popular books of all time.

Dozens more books followed, many of them also best-sellers. Among them were “Wishes Fulfilled,” ‘’Excuses Begone” and “The Sky’s the Limit.”

He also co-authored a handful of children’s books.

FAMILY TABLE A slice of life: preserving the tradition caught my eye: Jamaican jerk pickles, zucchini relish (who doesn’t need another recipe for squash?), calvados-cranberry applesauce, freezer guacamole, and green tomato-pineapple chutney.

As well, there’s a chapter on soups, stews and stocks that will line your pantry shelves with foods that don’t have long lists of unpronounceable ingredients on their labels.

How about Mexican beef garden soup, or chili, corn, and chicken chowder?

To get you started, here’s an easy recipe from the book:

That undertaking mostly has gone by the wayside, what with the other chores and diversions of life. But there are plenty of folks, like my sister Mary Anne McQuillan, who are both great gardeners and industrious enough to “put food by.”

As noted in today’s main feature, freezing is the way to go for a lot of foods. You have to stand over boiling pots of water to blanch vegetables, but at least you don’t have to sterilize jars and then process them. I called Mary Anne on a recent Monday morning, and caught her as she finished a project.

“I just put in about 15 pounds of edamame,” she said. The pods, plump with immature soybeans, had to be boiled for five minutes before she could drain and pack them for the freezer. Also packed into her freezer are grilled, peeled and seeded peppers; grilled slabs of zucchini and eggplant; and a mixture of those vegetables, along with tomatoes, that is glossed with olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper and roasted.

“I make much more than I can eat at a meal,” and then freeze the surplus, Mary Anne said.

That’s efficiency: Cook once, enjoy several meals.

My sister also freezes fruit, although this year, the winter moths decimated her fruit trees, and wild turkeys have been competing for the raspberries. When she has a big crop of cantaloupes, she freezes sections of the melon, “and then you can make daiquiris with it.”

Morris cross country teams ready their engines “Our season goals are still the same – get our teams to compete for a regional title and advance to the sectional.

We’ve never had a top 10 sectional team finish, so we probably need to start there before talking about getting a team to state.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com The tables have turned this season for the Morris cross country program. After a 2014 season that saw a wealth of returning talent on the boys team and some talented but untested runners for the girls, the teams are seeing the flip side in 2015.

This season, the girls have runners returning and the boys have spots up for grabs.

Coach Joe Blumberg enters his 11th season at the helm with optimism for both sides.

Atop the returning list for the girls team is sophomore Mya Shannon, who became the first female cross country runner in school history to qualify for the state meet last year.

Although Shannon ran alone near the front of the pack last season, Blumberg expects her to see some familiar Redskins this year.

“Postseason talk last year surrounding our girls was all about Mya,” he said. “I think she’ll have some company this year, and that can only make us better. Junior Meghan Smith is running very well in practice, juniors Lily Tibbott and Sophie Tibbott have varsity postseason experience, seniors Lindsey Schmitt and Kaitlin Palko have been running since November and have a great endurance base and junior Maria Blanco is an experienced runner with two varsity letters.”

Blumberg also sees potential in sophomore Madi Mayberry, junior Sabrina Baftiri, and senior Summer Shaw ,who are first-year runners that will contribute immediately.

“Add Madi and Sabrina’s combination of athleticism and competitiveness, and Summer’s maturity and leadership, and three more girls will fight for top five spots from the get go.”

“The loss of the graduating seniors [9 graduates] hurts us two ways. One, our numbers are down and two, we lost a ton of experience and leadership. We can never replace those guys, and it’ll be darn tough to recover from their loss.”

Although the team isn’t as big as Blumberg may like, it is growing.

“A week and a half ago, we had eight guys total,” he said.

“We’ve been able to encour-

age some guys walking the halls to come out, but must be patient as we get them into racing shape. Honestly, it might not be this year. The summer is that important.”

Only two returners have varsity race experience – senior Al Alvarez and junior Zach Chapman.

Newcomers senior Nick Bartolomei, sophomore Wes Diaz, and sophomore Zach Guzman have been pleasant surprises, but injuries are a concern.

“If healthy and completely committed, Nick and Zach can compete for top three spots,” Blumberg said. “It’ll be the first full season for each, so we have to be cau-

tious and build their endurance slowly. Zach won the fresh-soph race at our invite and Wes earned a medal. Hopefully they will gain some confidence from the early season success.”

Junior Shane McTague is recovering from an injury and probably will miss a significant part of the year.

“It’s unfair to expect a varsity contribution from Shane, as much as it’s killing him to not be in uniform,” Blumberg said. “He did get cleared to run this week and is working his way back slowly.

“As a captain, he’s influenced our team so many other ways thus far.”

“Max Dudley is an intriguing addition. He’s a soccer player first, but will compete with us on race days,” Blumberg said. “After his winter and spring training, we think he can help.

And the other guys are instantaneously on the varsity roster, because of numbers alone. Somebody will get the opportunity to step up and run in the postseason.

“Who that will be all depends on who can stay healthy while getting in race shape.”

Baran is looking for his first feature win of the season.

Third-place Ryan Probst is 130 points behind Greenup and not out of the hunt.

Amanda Bohn, in the CSR Minicups division, leads Jamie Domski by 18 points with both drivers having won two features. In the closest points battle of all the divisions, Jordan Caskey is 11 points ahead of Nathan Bertino in the Midwest Legacy Series.

MORRIS – The 12th annual Grundy County Speedway Hall of Fame Induction ceremony is scheduled Saturday.

Fans can arrive as early as noon to view all the photographs and race cars on display until 6 p.m.

Evan Esar, a humorist who died in 1995, said, “A signature always reveals a man’s character – and sometimes even his name.”

A bridge bid (at least in theory) always reveals something about your hand – not only to partner, but also to the opponents. This makes it a double-edged sword. You hope it will help your side to reach the best contract, but not give the defenders sufficient information to defeat you.

This deal occurred during a social game. Look at the North hand. Your partner opens one no-trump, showing 15-17 points. What would you respond?

In my opinion, there is a strong case for raising straight to three no-trump. You have honors in both of your doubletons and a strong five-card minor. It is true that if you have a 4-4 spade fit and can make game in that suit but not in no-trump, you had better use Stayman. But the odds are against that. And here, if you use Stayman, you tell the defenders that partner has four hearts and you have four spades.

You are more likely to attract a diamond lead than the major-suit lead that would be almost certain after one no-trump – three no-trump.

Here, if North does not use Stayman, West will probably lead a heart, after which the contract makes easily. Declarer just plays low from the dummy to set up a minimum of two spades, two hearts and five clubs.

After a Stayman auction, West might well start with the diamond nine, which kills the contract. Yes, if he chooses a spade, not a heart, the contract should also fail, but keeping the opponents in the dark is often beneficial.

Complications following cataract surgery are rare Dear Dr. K: I am having cataract surgery in a few weeks.

Can you describe the possible complications?

Dear Reader: A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. As the condition worsens, you may experience blurred or dim vision, increased glare, double vision, nearsightedness and worsening night vision.

Surgery is the only effective cure. During cataract surgery, the doctor removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens.

Cataract surgery is generally very safe. I know, because I’ve had it. But all operations involve some risk. Following

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff are some potential complications: EYE INFECTION. You will receive antibiotics before, during and after surgery to minimize this risk. If you do develop an infection (symptoms include red, swollen, painful eyes and a decline in vision), see your doctor right away.

SWELLING AND FLUID IN THE RETINA. Symptoms include blurred or reduced central vision. This can be treated with steroid injections or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drops.

SWELLING OF THE CLEAR COVERING OF THE EYE (THE CORNEA). You may notice blurred vision or halos around lights. This complication is often temporary.

BLEEDING INSIDE THE EYE. You may see blood or have blurred vision and floaters. Bleeding often clears on its own. Occasionally, surgery is needed to clear the bleeding.

RETINAL DETACHMENT. This rare complication, in which the retina pulls away from the blood vessels that supply it, is an emergency. It can be treated successfully if brought immediately to the attention of the eye doctor.

INCREASED GLARE. This can be temporary or permanent.

DISLOCATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LENS. If the lens shifts out of place, it may need to be

repositioned during a second surgical procedure.

CLOUDING OF THE LENS CAPSULE. The capsule is the thin, clear membrane that surrounds the lens. It’s the pouch inside of which the lens sits. Clouding of this membrane is usually not a significant problem and can be treated with laser surgery, if needed.

INCREASED PRESSURE IN THE EYE. Medications can usually control the pressure.

ASTIGMATISM. Distorted images, caused by irregular curving of the cornea, can be managed with glasses or surgery.

STRABISMUS. Your eyes will be crossed, they won’t focus on the same object at the same time, or you’ll have double vision. This is sometimes

temporary. If it is permanent, it can be treated with eyeglass modifications or, rarely, eye muscle surgery.

DROOPING OF THE UPPER EYELID. If the drooping is severe, it can be treated with lid muscle surgery.

Maybe you read this list of possible complications and thought, “It sounds like the surgery does more harm than good!” Don’t get cold feet. These complications are unusual and treatable.

When I had cataract surgery, I didn’t have any of these complications – and nor do most people.
