Area man wanted for home repair fraud Arrest warrants issued in Grundy and Will counties

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com Steven M. Ellis is wanted by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Morris Police Department for multiple counts of home repair fraud.

Morris Detective Alicia Steffes said Ellis has been investigated and charged in relation to a case Steven M. in Morris.

“We believe Ellis he’s still soliciting business in the area,” Steffes said. “We want to serve the warrant to keep him from hurting oth-

ers.”

Ellis most recently lived in the Seneca and Verona area.

He is wanted in Will County for larceny.

Ellis, 41, gives estimates for roofing work, receives a payment or partial payment – and never does the job, Steffes said.

Grundy County Detective R.H. Coleman said a warrant for Ellis’ arrest was issued for aggravated home repair fraud, and Coleman is investigating a second active case involving Ellis received Wednesday by the sheriff’s office.

Ellis is believed to be in the area, Coleman said.

“We encourage people to do background checks and get references and follow up on them,” Steffes said.

Junk in the Trunk events Grundy County Historical scheduled for September Society to meet Tuesday MORRIS – The next Junk In The Trunk flea market is scheduled for Sunday at 100 Commercial Drive in Morris (use the parking lot behind Walgreens near Lindy Gerties Restaurant).

Jack Dunn, of Kinsman, will talk about mutual telephone companies, which were private phone companies often operated by individuals out of their homes. Jack Dunn has lived in Kinsman all his life and operated the Kinsman telephone company for 50 years.

Minooka fire destroys home; no injuries reported

MINOOKA – A home in Minooka was destroyed in a fire Thursday morning, but no one was injured.

At 1 a.m., the Minooka Fire Protection District responded to a house fire on the 800 block of Avalon Way, according to a district news release. Crews found the home engulfed in flames, but police confirmed all the occupants were already out of the house.

Firefighters did not enter the home because the fire was too heavy and the roof collapsed, the news release stated.

The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes and extinguished in the next hour. Crews remained on the scene until about 4 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the news release. The house and its contents are a total loss.

Channahon, Elwood, Morris, Troy, Oswego, Plainfield and Wilmington firefighters assisted the Minooka district on the scene, as did Minooka police and the MABAS Division 15 fighters rehab and canteen unit. Coal City, Rockdale and Manhattan crews covered Minooka’s fire station.

Minooka high school bus hit by car Thursday

MINOOKA – A car slammed into a school bus Thursday morning in Minooka, but no one was injured.

At 8:15 a.m., the driver of a Kia rear-ended a bus near Ridge and Wildy roads, according to Minooka police. Three students were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, but none were injured.

The bus was transporting Minooka Community High School students. Police responded to the scene immediately.

The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to police.

HOW TO SUPPORT LOCAL POLICE

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Every time an officer drives past Kathy Cabada’s Armstrong Street home, she wants them to know she has their six – a military and police term for “I’ve got your back.”

Cabada, a Grundy County 911 dispatcher, and fellow dispatcher Leslie Coleman jointly operate Flip My Decor, a decorating business. The pair has offered to paint blue lines on anyone’s curb who wishes it. In order to receive the blue lines for free, community members must promise to thank a local police officer in person.

“With everything escalating with police across the country, we want to show the ones we love that we support them,” Cabada said. “It started as a memorial for fallen officers, and now it’s being used as a show of support for police.”

She said the message is simple: If an officer is on her street, in her neighborhood and in need of help, she and her family are there.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said the outpouring of support has reaffirmed what he’s always known – that the community is full of great people who support the department.

“It’s a little overwhelming at times,” Dite said. “Our department is about pride, service and integrity, and this shows me we are living up to that.”

Dite said recently a resident brought in a Jimmy John’s gift card good for a sandwich, chips and a drink for each one of the department’s officers.

There are 24 full-time officers and eight part-time officers who work for the Morris police.

“The guy who dropped off the Jimmy John’s was upset at the general feeling of police lately,” Dite said. “When

Morris shop still closed after fire

Owner hopes to re-open in October

MORRIS – It’s been one month since a fire on the second story of 118 E. Washington St. in Morris rendered an apartment unlivable and a store inoperable.

That store, Our Home To Yours – a thrift shop selling gently-used furniture, clothing and accessories – is working on opening again sometime in October, co-owner Marge Bell said.

Marge Bell “We’d like to be open for Our Home To Yours owner Corn Fest, but I just don’t see it happening,” she said.

The store experienced Bell and her sister grabbed damage from water but little a few things before exiting, from smoke, Bell said.

She was in the shop when just as they saw some glass in a UPS delivery driver ran in the store shatter. and told her to get out because the building was on fire.

Morris claims 3 years of ACT scores above national average

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the first time since all high school juniors began taking the ACT in 2001, Morris Community High School has posted three straight years with spring testing composite scores above 21.

The school also has continued an pattern in the graduation report portion of test data, which counts the student’s best score out of how many times they may choose to take the ACT. “I’m most excited that in five of the last six years, our graduation report ACT composite score has been above 21,” Principal Kelly Hussey said.

According to ACT scoring history provided by Hussey,

over the last eight years the national ACT composite score hovered below 21. The Illinois spring junior testing composite score fluctuated between 20 and 20.3 and the Illinois graduation report composite fluctuated between 20.5 and 20.9.

Until 2000, only students who wanted to take the ACT and identified as college-bound actually took the test in Illinois.

From 1990 to 2000, Morris Community High School’s composite scores were between 21.4 and 22.6.

Morris is now at a point where composite ACT scores of graduating classes are consistently in line with its 1990s graduating classes, when only college-bound students took

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For 23 years, women with the Fraternal Order of Eagles Woman’s Auxiliary have made and sold fudge at the Grundy County Corn Festival, and this year is no different.

After forming the auxiliary in 1991, the women decided they wanted a way to spend time together while doing good for the community, and the idea of the fudge sale was born.

“We all get together and make it at 7:30 a.m.,” Auxiliary President Lori Carlson said.

“We’ll make 30 double batches of fudge and get it ready to sell.”

The fudge – which sells for $4 for nearly a half-pound – comes plain or with walnuts and has been one of the primary fundraisers for the women, who gather on the first and third Wednesday each month.

The money raised is used to help local charities and people who apply for help. The group votes on which requests they can help. The Fraternal Order of Eagles was first established in Morris in 1905, and the woman’s auxiliary formed to further help their community by giving back.

“I joined over 13 years ago because I wanted to give back to my community,” Carlson said.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles raises nearly $10 million annually at the national level to help communities.

That charity is the draw for some of the women who meet locally; for others, it’s the sense of sisterhood, a chance to get out of the house and meet with like-minded women.

“After the kids grow up, you still need something for yourself,” member Mary Jo Bernardi said.

Membership is open to women of all ages and the group boasts every woman age 21 to 100 will find a friend and purpose in the organization.

to make friends in Morris, but when traveling, she and her husband have stopped at other Eagles halls and felt welcomed.

For many, the organization is a family affair, with thirdand fourth-generation members working side-by-side to help others. Carlson said the corn Festival is a great time for women who are interested in becoming members to stop by and talk to current members – be it at the fudge stand set up near the corner of Liberty and Washington streets where its hall is located, or at the lower floor of the hall itself.

The ACT test is an indicator of a student’s college and career readiness, Hussey said, noting that high schools are well aware they do not prepare students for careers. Rather, high schools prepare students for the training they will receive, either at a two-year, four-year or vocational institution.

OPINION Short on words for state budget woes Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said recently the state government’s backlog of unpaid bills will hit $8.5 billion by the end of December, up from about $6 billion right now.

The state’s bill backlog was about $8 billion this past January, right after most of the 2011 state income tax hike expired.

But the backlog fell to $3.5 billion by the end of July, and only $2.3 billion of those bills were more than 30 days overdue.

But let’s take a look at another estimate Munger released last week. She totaled state spending from the last fiscal year that isn’t being mandated by federal and state court decrees (Medicaid bills, state employee and judicial salaries, etc.), continuing appropriations (bond and pension payments, legislative salaries), a signed appropriations bills (K-12 education), and other things, and came up with $4.3 billion.

The $4.3 billion is the total amount paid out last year but is not currently being sent to colleges and universities, state employee health care providers, non-Medicaid social service providers, MAP Grant college student aid recipients, lottery winners over $25,000, plus various “transfers out,” including to local governments for things such as motor fuel tax distributions. Senate Democrats stepped in last week and passed an appropriations bill that covers most of those state payments that aren’t already going out the door. The problem, of course, is that just because they passed a spending bill doesn’t mean there is any money to pay those bills.

And there are, indeed, no available state revenues to pay for most of those appropriations (with exception for money that comes out of “special funds” such as the $582 million appropriated from the Motor Fuel Tax

There’s already billions of dollars less coming into state coffers because of the January tax hike expiration, but the Senate bill would spend billions of dollars more. The governor’s overall record on veto overrides so far this year has been 60 wins and one loss – with that one “loss” being a veto of Medicaid funding for heroin treatment that was overridden by both chambers and is therefore now law. But the governor agreed to Republican legislators’ demands to not oppose the override, and there are those who believe he only vetoed it so he could look like he was opposed to spending money on heroin addiction treatment, so it wasn’t really a “loss.”

It is, therefore, more than reasonable to assume that even if the House Democrats do manage to get all 71 of their members to town later this month and pass the Senate’s spending legislation (probably a big “if” because one of those Democrats has tickets to see Pope Francis that very day), the governor likely will veto the thing, and then the House Democrats will struggle in vain yet again to override.

According to the Senate Democrats, the four legislative leaders and the governor have not met with each other since late May. And the governor refuses even to discuss the budget until the Democrats agree to address his “Turnaround Agenda.” I just don’t know what to say any more.

As is so often the case, my dad is right. I don’t know what that’s like. But together we have a chance to show these officers, deputies and their families we appreciate that they do know what that experience is like.

Former soccer coach Joe Morrone dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS STORRS, Conn. – Joe Morrone, a Hall of Fame coach who led the Connecticut men’s soccer team to the 1981 national title, has died.

He was 79.

He died Wednesday night at his Mansfield home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, the school said.

Morrone guided the Huskies from 1969 to 1996. He previously coached at Middlebury College in Vermont from 1958 to 1968. When he retired, he was one of four college coaches with at least 400 career victories. His record was 422-199-64.

At UConn, Morrone compiled a 28-year record of 358178-53. The Huskies were nationally ranked 16th or better 14 times between 1975 and 1996, and the school’s soccer stadium was named for Morrone in 1997.

“He was a UConn legend who touched the lives of so many,” UConn President Susan Herbst said.

HOUSTON – Milo Hamilton, a Hall of Fame broadcaster who called Hank Aaron’s historic 715th home run in 1974, has died.

The Houston Astros announced the death of their longtime play-by-play man on Thursday.

A cause of death was not immediately released.

He was 88.

Hamilton spent 60 years broadcasting MLB games, and was working for WSB Radio in Atlanta when Aaron became the all-time home run leader on April 8, 1974. Hamilton later said it was the highlight of his career.

Hamilton joined the Astros in 1985 and retired after the 2012 season. Hamilton since 2013 served as a guest radio commentator for select home games.

BRAIDWOOD – Immaculate Conception Church of Braidwood is holding its 2nd Annual “A Nite at the Races” fundraising event at 6 p.m. Oct. 10.

The event will take place at the Gardner American Legion Hall, 426 Industry Ave., Gardner.

This year’s theme is “tailgating.”

Join the church for an evening of video horse racing, raffles, silent auction and live auction.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Don’t forget to wear your favorite sports apparel to receive an extra $10 of “funny money.”

VIEWS Rob Oesterle When the Morris football team takes the field against Sterling on Friday night, it will have some special guests in the audience.

The Redskins will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 2005 Class 6A state championship team, a team that holds a special place in the long, rich history of Morris football.

Morris athletic director George Dergo, who was the coach of that team in his first year after taking over for legendary Dan Darlington, said a large majority of the team has confirmed they will attend the event.

Those attending will meet in the main gym at 6:30 p.m. to receive shirts before going out to the field at 7 p.m. to greet and cheer this season’s team as it prepares to play Sterling.

Once the team is on the field, the 2005 team members will move to the south end of the field to visit and enjoy food, treats and drinks. At halftime, the team and coaches will be announced while standing on the track in front of the home bleachers. After halftime, the honorees will be free to sit in either the south end zone or move about the stands.

Current Morris coach Alan Thorson, who was a member of the coaching staff in 2005, is pleased to have the former state champs in attendance.

“I think it will be pretty special for the kids on our team now,” he said. “A lot of these guys grew up watching that 2015 team, watching John Dergo run behind that big line with guys like Jamie Cumbie, Alex Perry, Dane Zumbahlen, Darin Hass and Mark Kopczick.

“I know our kids have their own motivation this year and they have set high goals, but it won’t hurt to have the state title team here. I think our guys will want to show those guys that the Morris tradition is in good hands.”

The players who were seniors on that team, along with a few juniors, received two state medals – one for finishing second in 2004 and one for winning the title in 2005.

The sophomores and two freshmen who were on the 2005 roster also earned two medals when the Redskins finished second in 2007. The only other group to earn two state football medals were members of both the 1979 3A runner-up and the 1980 3A championship teams.

for kills in a season, as well as kill attempts. She has 844 kills and is chasing down a personal goal of 1,000 for her career.

Korte, who already has committed to continue her career at the University of Illinois, is a

special talent that doesn’t come around every day.

Monday night is senior night for the Morris boys soccer team as the Redskins take on Coal City at 6 p.m.

In addition, for the first time ever, the Morris High School marching band and guard will be performing its show at the halftime of a soccer game.

Allow yourself time to enjoy the fall season Last Tuesday evening, I ran across an unusual situation.

I found five minutes in my schedule that were unaccounted for.

At first, panic set in.

Where was I supposed to be?

Who did I forget to email?

What kid was waiting for a ride with no parent to pick them up?

After the initial wave of nausea subsided, I realized it was really happening. Five minutes to do with whatever I wanted. I found myself outside.

My just completed task involved taking out the garbage.

I hesitated while reaching for the doorknob to the house. My eyes fixated on my patio table and chairs.

I looked into the kitchen through the window. No one noticed me.

I listened.

My name was not being called. Then I did the impossible and sat down.

At that moment, the entire world around me changed.

Everything slowed down.

I noticed the cool breeze racing through my hair. It

felt good.

The last rays of the sun still blanketed my surroundings with just enough warmth to remind me that summer was not that far in the rearview mirror. The birds sang, ducks swam across the lake, and tension lifted from my body.

For the first time this fall, I actually took a moment to enjoy the outdoors without an agenda.

Great trips from autumns past rushed through my mind.

Pictures of vivid colors danced through my memories and foretold of the blessings nature is soon going to unveil for all of us. I cherished the times driving through the northeast as one mountain after another passed by and dazzled everyone with endless beauty. I recalled fishing in Wisconsin, admiring the Mississippi River valley.

Amazing times I will never forget.

Even if your calendar doesn’t allow for such roads trips, take an evening and follow a few forgotten country lanes around here. This

Trading Quintana might do Chicago more harm than good

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – If the White Sox deal from a strength and decide to trade Jose Quintana during the offseason, the void that will be left in the starting rotation will be huge.

Quintana, who pitched seven innings of one-run ball in the Sox’ 4-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field, has been steady, durable, reliable and most of all good since he became a starter in 2012.

He also is young (26) and under team control with a contract that will pay him $5.4 million next season, $7 million in 2017 and $8.85 million in 2018 with club options of $10.5 million in 2019 and $11.5 million in 2020.

That’s a lot of bang for the buck, thanks to a shrewd deal negotiated by general manager Rick Hahn two spring trainings ago. It’s a contract that should ensure Hahn gets plenty in return if he decides to add to the club’s lacking position-player inventory.

Without Quintana, the Sox likely still would have two

left-handed stalwarts for years to come in Chris Sale (26) and Carlos Rodon (22). Lefty John Danks (30) is also under contract for another season.

Without Quintana, they no longer would have the services of one of baseball’s top left-handers.

He’ll pitch 200 innings for the third consecutive year, and he has posted season ERAs of 3.76, 3.51 and 3.32. His ERA this season is 3.53. How remarkable is that consistent quality?

“We know he’s a good pitcher,” manager Robin Ventura said. “You don’t question that at all. Whether he’s going to get some run support, that’s the other question.”

The lack of support has given Quintana 50 career no-decisions, the most in the majors since his rookie year of 2012.

He was in line to win for the 10th time Thursday, but closer David Robertson gave up a three-run homer to Billy Butler in the ninth inning.

“He’s one of the hardest workers on this team,” said Robertson, who was furious with himself for blowing the save. “He gets a quality start

almost every time he takes the ball [23 this season]. You can’t say enough about the guy.”

The Colombia-born Quintana, one of the most wellliked players in the clubhouse for his workmanlike approach and team attitude, just grins and bears it.

He said he never gets down and he wasn’t aware the no-decision tally was at 50 until a reporter told him.

“I never feel bad luck,” he said. “It’s part of the game, it happens. Try to continue.

Sometime that’ll change.”

It’s to the point where Ventura has had enough of the Quintana storyline.

“You get tired of talking about it,” Ventura said. “Going out there, he’s the same every day, he brings it every day. He’s just very consistent about how he goes about his work, how he pitches, attitude, all that stuff that you’d like to see, he does that every day.

He doesn’t hang his head on things like this, he knows guys are out there trying.”

Maddon optimistic on going into games against Cardinals

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com PITTSBURGH – The Cubs say they believe they can catch the Pirates for the top wild-card spot in the National League – especially after a three-for-four run through PNC Park the past three days.

Manager Joe Maddon said he’s still keeping the faith in a long-shot run at the Cardinals – their opponent the next three days – for the division title.

But when it comes to the lofty heights this young and flawed baseball team has achieved with 16 games left – after a 9-6 road beating Thursday of the team with the best home record in baseball – it really seems to come down to this: “Do you believe in magic?” Maddon said after the Cubs finished off a 7-4 road trip that included series wins over both the Cards and Pirates – that came within a pair of bullpen letdowns of being sweeps.

Magic? Believe it or not, since Maddon hired Simon the Magician to make a fivegame losing streak disappear June 30 in New York, the

Cubs have the best record in the major leagues – a halfgame ahead of the Pirates after Thursday’s win.

Maddon seemed only a little surprised to learn that when the trip concluded.

“There’s a lot to that,” he said.

It explains the success as well as anything else in that span for a team that can’t trust its starting pitching after two guys, has a hold-yourbreath bullpen and that still considers a runner at third with less than two outs an exercise in rocket science.

“I want to say I don’t believe in magic,” said rookie Kris Bryant, who had three hits and a walk, including a single in the middle of the Cubs’ six-run rally in the fifth.

“I don’t believe in it until it affects us like that.”

The Cubs closed to two games behind the Pirates in chase for top wild-card position.

And by winning three of four, the Cubs have clinched the season series against the Pirates, assuring home field for a wild-card game if they finish with the same records.
