Regional transportation committee meets Oct. 3

OTTAWA – The Human Services Transportation Plan, Region 3, Transportation Committee meets at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Mendota Civic Center, 1901 Tom Merwin Drive in Mendota.

Individuals interested in public transportation are encouraged to attend, especially human service organizations serving individuals who use public transportation.

The Regional Transportation Committee develops and implements the Human Services Transportation Plan, which identifies transportation needs and develops solutions to improve transportation services for the general public. An emphasis is placed on seniors, people with disabilities, individuals with lower incomes and veterans.

Region 3 includes Bureau, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle and Putnam counties.

Holiday Parade seeks floats for November

MORRIS – The Home for the Holidays Parade Committee invites businesses and residents participating in the 66th Annual Corn Festival Parade to “hold their floats” for this year’s Annual Lighted Holiday Parade.

The parade will be at 5:30 p.m.

Nov. 28, beginning at the corner of Franklin and Washington streets and concluding at Chapin Park with the annual lighting, according to a news release from event organizers. There also will be carols from the Coal City High School Madrigals, visits with Santa and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Lights for entries must be battery powered, glow lights or electrical lights powered by generators or electrical inverters.

Entrants need to be in the lineup area between 3:30 and 5 p.m.

The holiday parade has been a staple on the Home for the Holidays calendar, but the lighted nighttime parade has been a success in more recent years, according to the news release.

Fall crop sales closing date nears

SPRINGFIELD – The USDA’s Risk Management Agency reminds wheat and winter barley producers they have until sales closing Sept. 30 to purchase crop insurance or make a change to their existing policy.

Crop insurance protects against yield and revenue losses. Producers have a number of coverage choices, including yield coverage, revenue protection and area risk policies.

The agency also recently announced the availability of a Supplemental Coverage Option in select counties for winter and spring wheat for the 2015 crop year. SCO is a county-level policy endorsement that can be added to an underlying crop insurance policy.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School sophomore Veronica Johnson and her volleyball coach Taylor Lafond have something in common.

Both lost their grandmothers to ovarian cancer, and both want to educate the public about the disease’s symptoms.

“My family always does things for ovarian cancer awareness,” Johnson said.

“Every year we want to be part of awareness events so others know how to get help.”

Lafond, Johnson and the rest of Morris’ volleyball team have joined with Corri Trotter of Morris in her effort to “Turn the Towns Teal” by tying teal ribbons around the high school’s trees. The effort is designed to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, which claimed Trotter’s mother, Nancy Bonic, in 2002.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and Trotter is again organizing the local effort to increase awareness of symptoms, so women can be diagnosed and treated sooner.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in women and is the deadliest of the gynecological cancers.

Symptoms include bloating, abdominal discomfort, menstrual changes, urinary symptoms, fatigue, feeling full, having an upset stomach, back pain, pain during intercourse and constipation.

Morris High School Principal Kelly Hussey said the school supports grassroots efforts such as Turn the Towns Teal because it allows for learning outside the classroom, which supports the educational

She remembers her grandmother as always being happy and having a strong faith.

Lafond’s grandmother Margaret “Midge” Tesdal also died from ovarian cancer in 2008.

“She was very fun-loving.

She loved life and being outside,” Lafond said. “I hope the

ribbons raises awareness for females of any age.”

Lafond said it’s important for women to know that ovarian cancer doesn’t happen only to people in a specific age range; it can happen to children as well as adults.

Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson, Veronica Johnson’s father, said he is proud his daughter wants to honor her grandmother.

“I’m glad to see it’s not just my daughter, but all our athletes at Morris High School get

involved for many different types of cancer,” Johnson said.

Veronica Johnson’s grandmother, Jerri Johnson, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when Veronica was in second grade and died in December 2007, when Veronica was in third grade.

Bar owners react to new Corn Festival rule

Those are the feelings of some downtown bar owners now that a no public drinking rule will be enforced at this year’s Grundy County Corn Festival.

According to Morris Police Chief Brent Dite, officers will issue citations to anyone caught drinking on city streets or sidewalks during the festival.

“I’m afraid it’s going to keep people away. They’re going to be afraid to go out.

They’re going to be looking over their shoulder the whole time,” said Brian Steed, owner of the Red Cent Pub & Grill on Liberty Street.

Tom Hosek feels differently. The Chicago Pizza Department owner said he doesn’t mind the new drinking limitation because it will make the

atmosphere more enjoyable for families who want to roam downtown.

“Corn Fest is supposed to be family time. Time to get out, enjoy the parade, enjoy the food,” Hosek said.

“I think people may actually enjoy themselves more than before, because many of the bars have bands or entertainment on their property anyway,” he continued.

The public drinking ban is a new and significant change for the festival.

In past years, bar owners were given leeway to let patrons drink on the sidewalks near their establishments, but owners and residents have abused that right, Dite said.

As a result, the police encountered increasing problems with adults sharing or providing drinks to underage kids. In some cases, the crowds were so dense that families could not easily walk downtown without walking through

crowds of drinkers, Dite said.

“I think it’s kind of gotten out of control,” said Jim Maskel, vice president of the Grundy County Corn Festival Board.

Maskel said the new policy also is an opportunity to drive more traffic to the beer garden, located at the city parking lot at Illinois and Wauponsee streets. Half of the revenue

from the beer tent goes to the Corn Festival committee. The other portion is given to the Eagles Hall.

“That was part of the idea when we first started the tent – to get people off of the street. And also, to make money to support future festivals,” Maskel said.

Losing business is not a concern for Clayton’s Tap

owner Lois Darlington, but the potential for confusion and enforcement problems has her worried.

She said people coming back to Morris for the festival may not be aware of the rule change and will try to enjoy themselves as usual.

Local veteran’s flag finds new life

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Moldy, musty and stained: The flag belonging to former Morris resident Louis Chesharek was in poor shape when his nephew Paul Chesharek found it in the basement.

For years, the flag was buried inside a chest, but it resurfaced when Paul Chesharek’s basement flooded in July.

Louis “ I t w a s i n Chesharek such bad shape, I was going to have it destroyed at the Legion or the VFW,” Paul Chesharek said.

Paul Chesharek’s neighbor, Roger Haefner, had another idea when he saw the damaged flag.

“I told him I would fly it on my flagpole to honor his uncle,” Haefner said.

When he began cleaning it, Haefner realized the ninefoot flag was too large to fit on the 10-foot flagpole in his front yard, but he was determined to find a home for the Chesharek family flag.

Haefner reached out to the city of Morris, and after working with Mayor Richard Kop-

czick, they found a new home for the flag at the Morris City Pool, one of the few locations with a pole big enough to properly display the flag.

“At the pool we could fly it very visibly. A lot of people go by the pool,” Kopczick said.

Kopczick said he was happy to find a location for the flag and honor a Morris veteran.

“It’s just a little piece of Americana from right here in Morris,” he said. “And we were proud to honor [Paul’s] uncle.”

Before making its way to Paul Chesharek’s basement, the flag was draped on Louis’ coffin when he was buried in 1955 at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris.

Born and raised in Morris, Louis served in the United States Air Force after high school, but was killed in a car accident when he was only 25 years old, Paul Chesharek said.

“Nobody seems to know a whole lot about Louis, since he died so young,” Paul Chesharek said. “So I think it’s nice that he will be remembered.”

Haefner said he is organizing a ceremony at the Morris pool for when the flag is officially raised.

Kopczick said it will be put on display beginning next spring, when the pool reopens.

Election petitions available in Channahon

CHANNAHON – Election petitions and materials will be available for circulation starting Tuesday at the village of Channahon, 24555 S. Navajo Drive.

Those interested in picking up materials can do so between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to a news release from the village.

Positions up for election are village president, village clerk and three village trustee positions. Each are four-year terms.

Completed petitions must be received no earlier than Dec. 15 and no later than Dec. 22. Ballot position is determined by time and receipt of petitions.

If more than one petition is filed at the same time, by mail or in person, at 8:30 a.m.

MORRIS – Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge Director Scott Kristiansen presented Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan with two state awards Sept. 9 recognizing his office’s recent win at the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge.

Kristiansen presented the awards on behalf of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. The challenge targets three traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, speeding and impaired driving, according to a news release from the county.

Agencies are evaluated on enforcement initiatives and innovating problem solving in their communities, informing the public and creating policies that support traffic enforcement efforts, Kristiansen said in the news release.

The department received a first-place recognition award in the category “26-50 Sworn Officers” and an agency “Rookie of the Year” award for the best first-time entry in all categories.

Five deputies – Deputy Aaron Cory, Deputy Sean Wojtczak, Sgt. Josh Slattery, Deputy Darren Roach and Deputy Greg Butterfield – also were commended for their DUI enforcement.

Cory, Wojtczak and Butterfield received commendation certificates from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists. Callahan individually recognized Butterfield and Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force Director Paula Goodwin for their recent Illinois State MADD Hero Awards. It was the second time Butterfield has received the award.

Police agencies are asked to annually nominate to Mothers Against Drunk Driving their top DUI officer and/ or exceptional individual who provides or participates in prevention programs and/or works to prevent underage drinking.

Callahan also presented Goodwin and Butterfield with commendation certificates from state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, for their efforts. Slattery and Roach also received commendation certificates from Anthony.

station in Grundy County. The station would be built on agricultural land near the former Collins Station property.

At the station, electricity would be converted from direct current into alternating current energy and then get injected into the power grid. The energy would power homes throughout the Midwest and as far as the East Coast.

Morris Community High School Superintendent Pat Halloran said in July the districts would abate 100 percent of the taxes in exchange for the onetime payment until 2032, when the enterprise ends. At that time, the districts will receive 50 percent of the taxes owed on the property.

The project’s fate rests with the Illinois Commerce Commission, which is reviewing it.

MORRIS – Saratoga school officials have agreed to abate taxes on the site of the proposed Rock Island Clean Line Energy power station until 2032 in exchange for a one-time payment of about $2.75 million.

The Saratoga Grade School District 60C Board voted, 5-0, Monday to approve a term sheet with Clean Line. Board member Ginger Jones was absent, and Scott Heren left prior to the vote.

School officials, along with Morris Community High School administrators, had met with the district’s attorney to discuss what the Rock Island Clean Line’s energy project would mean to the schools if it came to Grundy County.

“The district would receive a one-time payment of $2.745 million,” Superintendent Kathy Perry said. “We could use those funds any way we want.”

Perry told the board if the Clean Line Energy project goes forward, the district would consider putting the lump sum payment into a separate escrow account, which the district would draw from annually during the next 20 years.

The proposed Rock Island Clean Line Energy project involves channeling 3,500 megawatts of wind energy from Iowa to Illinois through a series of above-ground transmission lines.

The electricity pipeline would begin in O’Brien County, Iowa, and span 500 miles, ending at a large converter

I’ve had these silver fillings in my mouth for years and they don’t hurt, but my dentist says I need to have them replaced with crowns and white fillings. Does this work really need to be done?

A:

These silver fillings are called amalgam fillings. They are composed of mercury, silver, tin, and other various metals.The amalgam fillings itself do not pose any sort of health risks, but do pose a risk on teeth. Amalgams are not chemically bonded onto the tooth and since they are made from metal, they tend to expand and contract inside of the tooth. This constant expansion and contraction causes the amalgam filling to separate microscopically from the tooth creating gaps. In these microscopic gaps, bacteria can enter the tooth causing decay underneath the filling. Because of the nature of the amalgam fillings, sometimes the decay cannot be detected using an x-ray or even seen with the eye. By the time the decay is found using an x-ray, the decay is large and root canal treatment might be necessary. Also, amalgam fillings can cause cracks in teeth, especially the larger the filling and the longer it has been in the mouth. These cracks are often asymptomatic, but over time, the crack becomes larger and the tooth will either fracture or start to hurt. If the tooth fractures, then a crown will be necessary and maybe a root canal.

If the tooth becomes symptomatic, then a root canal and crown may be the only choice to save the tooth. Having the amalgam fillings removed before cracks form is the ideal situation because typically, those amalgam fillings can be replaced with the white composite fillings. Waiting too long to replace amalgam fillings will end up in larger treatment costing more money and possibly more discomfort. adno=0263739

The State of Illinois is one of 35 states that has a “Bioptic Telescope Driving Law”.

This law states that if a person has 20/100 vision in the better seeing eye and can be corrected to 20/40 with a telescope that does not exceed 3X power, and meets the criteria Jeffrey J. Blanco, O.D. for side vision, that person qualifies for the vision requirement for driving.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sheriff’s Office, 111 E. Illinois Ave. in Morris to check car seats for proper installation and advise parents and caregivers on how to choose and install the right car seats, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The free event is part of National Child Passenger Safety this week. It is one of 78 events in Illinois sponsored by AAA, the Illinois Secretary of State, the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Illinois Depart-

ment of Transportation.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible, up to the top height or weight allowed by their particular seats, according to the news release.

Once children outgrow the rear-facing car seat, they are ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness. After outgrowing their car seats, children should be placed in booster seats.

Illinois law requires a child remain in a booster seat until they are age 8. Since some children are not tall enough at age 8 for the seat belt to fit them like an adult, they need to stay in a booster seat longer.

All children younger than age 13 should ride in the back seat.

Don’t turn safety over to government

The U.S. Forest Service was thoroughly mocked for a recent exhaustive article on the eve of National Roasted Marshmallow Day (Aug. 30), instructing Americans how to successfully toast a marshmallow without injuring themselves. The USFS also suggested replacing the chocolate with fruit and the graham cracker with angel food cake, in the name of nutrition.

Why stop there? Why not replace the marshmallow with a Brussels sprout, and the fire with a TV set? It would be safer, healthier ... and absolutely ghastly. The truth is, safer is not always better.

The article author’s intentions were good, and the tips are recommendations, not codified into law — at least, not yet – but this is indicative of the troublesome trend of making health and safety paramount over everything, including both freedom and enjoyment.

Take, for example, motorcycle helmet laws. Yes, it is very dangerous to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. But do riders’ heads belong to the state? Shouldn’t riders be able to decide for themselves?

The fundamental argument for helmet laws is that the state pays some medical costs for riders’ injuries and, therefore, has an interest in keeping riders safe, but that rationale is an endless path. As taxpayers shoulder more and more health care costs, the state can claim that every decision that impacts health falls within their jurisdiction.

America is fatter than ever, so we are seeing attempts to tax, ban or regulate soda. Can candy and snack foods be far behind?

And guns? If it weren’t for that pesky Constitution, firearms would have been banned

Parents in several states recently have been arrested and forced to fight for custody of their children, just for allowing their kids to walk to the neighborhood park to play.

Sometimes, a safety concern doesn’t even have to be proven.

Governments are rushing to regulate or ban e-cigarettes in spite of the fact that we do not yet even know whether they are a health danger or benefit to smokers.

Anything we are afraid of gives lawmakers the chance to grab a little more power, a little more money, impose another regulation, or look like defenders of the public good while picking economic winners and losers – and, therefore, campaign contributions – from the industries they target.

However, ceding control of our lives to the state is just about the least-safe thing we could ever do.

How many times at work have you heard, “Safety is our first priority?” Don’t believe it.

If you work at a toy factory, the first priority actually is making toys. If safety was really more important, they would close up shop and fire you so you could go sit safely at home.

The world is an unsafe place. Empowering the state with the endless and futile task of protecting us from all possible harm is a recipe for unlimited government and total surrender of personal freedom. As a society we must not succumb to the impulse to surrender so much of our personal responsibility for daily safety that we end up giving away our freedom out of fear.

In America, safety is not our first priority. Freedom is.

Missing the forest for the trees WASHINGTON, D.C. – “The West must shift from reactive to proactive, from crisis management to crisis prevention.”

The target of this advice, given by Aram I Keshishian of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was Washington, D.C., but it also happens to be good counsel for the average citizen.

At the summit, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, chose to talk about Israel. His remarks began somewhat innocuously enough, but he was soon telling the crowd that everyone present had to stand with Israel. This audibly upset some in the audience – it doesn’t require an expert in regional politics to know that there might be some political sensitivity about Israeli policies in a room of Arab Christians. Cruz took the reaction as anti-Semitism, expressed this fact and promptly left. As you might imagine, the partisans of social media, abetted by the voracious appetite of the hype-driven 24-hour news cycle, had a field day.

But when all most Americans see of Arab Christians is footage of a crowd of them hissing at Ted Cruz and Israel, the importance of that message and its radical love is muddied, if not lost.

Reactions to Cruz that

The cynical among us gave the clinical Beltway analysis: The new group had invited the presidential aspirant in the hopes of getting some buzz, and Cruz used the opportunity for the same.

And what started off as an attempt to spotlight the importance and vulnerability of a specific population became just another ugly political fracas. Cruz supporters dubbed him a hero on social media, the IDC was derided, and that little matter of Christian genocide was forgotten once again.

Bishop Angaelos, a Coptic who lives in London, acknowledged that a truth was spoken during the Cruz kerfuffle, even as the IDC was “misrepresented.”

Cruz had said that hating Jews does not reflect the

teachings of Christ. That happens to be absolutely true.

But Cruz’s remarks were upsetting to the majority of people I spoke to because the admonishment wasn’t one they needed to hear. “We are not people of hate. We speak in defense of Christians, of Jews, of Muslims, of those of no faith,” Angaelos protested.

That said, no one is perfect, and where did the impulse to heckle a speaker come from?

The PR headache and disappointment can also serve as an examination of conscience.

You can talk about something, but people have to see it. And if a Christian approaches the world with anything other than true love for the heart of God, what the world is going to see is not his or her best intention, but the obstacle in the way of a world of good.

Boos and brawls are what make news, if we let them.

So we must direct the focus elsewhere.

MORRIS – After all the anticipation over the summer months, the high school football season is already one-third over. Through three games, Morris is 2-1, having lost its opener, 28-21, to Class 8A Minooka, before beating downstate power Metamora, 12-8 and Class 8A Dundee-Crown, 27-0.

Starting Friday, the rest of the schedule for the Redskins consists of Northern Illinois Big 12 schools, starting with a crossover against Sterling. The two teams share Metamora as a common opponent, as Sterling dropped a 29-14 decision to the Redbirds in Week 1 after taking an early 14-0 lead. Since then, Sterling has defeated Chicago Whitney Young, 37-13, and Rich South, 32-12, and the Golden Warriors enter the game with a 2-1 record and two straight wins, the same as Morris.

Sterling has yet to throw a touchdown pass so far this season, as quarterback Sterling Thornton is their top rushing threat. He has carried the ball 65 times for 317 yards and seven TDs, while the next leading rusher is Rafael Escalante, who has 109 yards and three TDs on 20 attempts. Brandon Dennis has 106 yards on 41 attempts.

Through the air, Thornton has attempted just 40 passes in three games, completing 15 for 145 yards. His top receiver has been Turner Morse, who has caught eight passes for 85 yards.

“Their quarterback is their best athlete,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “They use a little bit of read-option, but they also run some quarterback leads and isos for him, too. They use him a lot like Minooka used [Mitch] Brozovich a few years ago or Seneca used [Bo] Taylor last year. We definitely have to stop him, that’s for sure.

“But, that plays right into what has been our strength, especially the last couple of games. Our defense, especially against the run, has been very good. They have a chip on their shoulders and they don’t even want to allow a first down any more. We have been really

good, and Sterling will give us a good test.”

One thing that may work in the Redskins’ advantage is, oddly enough, the Golden Warriors’ home field, which is an artificial field turf surface. It will be the first time on an artificial surface for Morris, which has played on a wet natural grass field all three weeks.

“Playing on the turf will be nice,” Thorson said. “Their field is very nice, and their stadium is a neat place to play. It’s a great atmosphere. Of course, it will be tough to play on the road after a long trip like that.

We’ve had two home games and our road game was in Minooka.

This trip is quite a bit longer, so we have that to deal with.

“We just want to continue to play our game and improve each week. If we can eliminate more of the mistakes and penalties and just come out and play like we can, I think we will be fine.”

Senior running back Jake Walker has been a question mark every week with an ankle injury, but Morris has had someone step in and take over the running load. In the Week 2 win over Metamora, it was quarterback Griffin Sobol, who gained 98 yards and scored both touchdowns. In last week’s win over Dundee-Crown, sophomore Keagan Sobol was pressed into more offensive work that he is used to, but responded with 187 yards on 23 attempts. Fall temp changes can bring great fishing I stepped from my front door just as a few faint streaks of sunlight sliced through the darkness. My breath caught just slightly. For the first time, I was chilled by the morning air.

Glad to have on a jacket, I proceeded to my car and made my way to work. Around the bend my ears caught the familiar, but long since heard, cackle from thousands of blackbirds as they swooped and swarmed from one treetop to the next.

Nature is sending us signals, and those signals feel good.

Later that same week, I sat in my recliner with every window open in the family room.

The sun was beaming, the breeze crisp, and football game danced across the television.

What a day. Fall is such a great time of year, but what does it mean for the angler in us?

Change – that’s what.

Late summer angling can be especially difficult. Water temps are at their highest point all year, and many of the quality fish are in deep haunts hanging right at the edge of that thermocline. At this level they still have plenty of oxygen, however, they can stay at more comfortable temps.

The fall, however, can change things and usually in a hurry. When referring to fall in the angling world, you need to be thinking water temperature, not calendar pages. I like to think of fall fishing getting real good once that liquid world dips below the 70-degree mark.

If that surface temp hovers around 65, then so much the better.

It seems to me that once the water hits that magical range, the fish change their entire attitude and hit baits with a vengeance. I prefer to use something that swims to cover lots of water. The key is finding where the food chain is active.

What does that mean? In the fall, it usually translates into fishing the windiest shorelines that you can find. The predatory fish are relating to the bait this time of year more than shoreline cover. If there are schools of baitfish being pushed along a bluff bank, the bigger fish will be there. If the wind changes and now the

It took me a while to learn to fish that way in the fall. I was still looking for “fishy” looking stuff. You know, stumps, weeds, rocks, that type of cover. A single outing on Lake Norfork in northern Arkansas changed all of that. The local we were fishing with pulled up on the worst bank I have ever seen. Flat, sandy, and no cover at all. To make it worse, the wind was beating that bank with a vengeance. It was so bad we could barely control the boat. In fact, we were the only boat anywhere near that mess.

Everyone else was in protected coves far away from us.

I looked at my guide with what must have been a confused expression. He said, “Trust me.” Minutes later we were chugging giant spinnerbaits and reeling in equally impressive fish. I soon forgot about the wind and the lack of cover on the shoreline.

After I became a believer, he explained to me everything I mentioned earlier. He said the water temperature is the key and works on lakes all over the country. He also told me fishing traditional cover the way a person would all summer will work. But, if one wants big numbers of quality fish, then they should follow the bait through the entire fall season.

I have been doing so ever since and not once have I been disappointed. The Minnesota Vikings and Carolina Panthers have gotten it right now by placing Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy on the commissioner’s exempt list, a special and rare designation that allows the team to retain its rights to a player while not keeping him on the active roster. The player continues to be paid his full salary, so he is not being harmed or penalized in any way while his case works its way through the legal system.

Should Hardy and/or Peterson ultimately be judged guilty in a court of law – Hardy has been found guilty by a

judge but has an appeal to be heard by a jury of his peers scheduled – it will be up to that court to determine their punishment.

That would also make it seem reasonable that their respective teams should be able to punish or discipline them as well for conduct unbecoming to the organization.

But until their due process is complete, a right guaranteed to every American, guilty or innocent, I believe these teams have now taken the correct approach.

With domestic abuses cases squarely at the forefront of the NFL world, a high-profile civil rights lawyer called a press conference Wednesday in Atlanta to blast the NFL’s handling of the years-old allegations against receiver Brandon Marshall.

And it prompted a supportive statement in defense of Marshall from Bears general manager Phil Emery.

Attorney Gloria Allred claimed that the league and commissioner Roger Goodell did not properly investigate Marshall’s past incidents with ex-girlfriend Rasheedah Watley, stemming from arrests in 2007 and 2008 when he was with

the Denver Broncos.

Allred said that “this isn’t a case” against Marshall and the NFL, but that “our focus in on the [investigation] process” in light of the situations of Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and Adrian Peterson.

“This issue is so much bigger than Brandon Marshall,” Allred said. “This issue is about the NFL and what it needs to do to in the future.”

Joining Allred at the press conference were Watley’s father, Clarence, and friend, Kristeena Spivey, who read statements alleging that they were ignored by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell after being informed of Marshall’s alleged actions.

Goodell to resign. Allred said Watley, herself, is not interested in being interviewed.

“It wasn’t like the commissioner was in the dark about what was going on with Brandon Marshall and my daughter,” Watley said. “There was no way he could be out of the loop on that many instances.”

Marshall was handed a three-game suspension by Goodell on Aug. 6, 2008 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after incidents with Watley in March 2008. It was later reduced to a one-game suspension.

In August 2008, Marshall was charged with two misdemeanor counts of simple battery. In August 2009, he was found not guilty.

Marshall’s past is well-documented. His story was just featured on ESPN’s “E:60” on Tuesday, which Marshall viewed unfavorably according to his remarks on Twitter, and will later be detailed on NFL Network’s “A Football Life” on Friday.

Marshall has become a team leader since joining the Bears in 2012, using his platform to raise awareness for mental health issues.

Marshall, while a member of the Miami Dolphins, announced at a press conference in July 2011 that he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

“Brandon has the full support of the Chicago Bears,” Emery said. “We were aware of his personal background when

But there is another fun and healthy alternative that many in this area may not even know about. Join a club.

The Joliet Ski Club could be a good option for someone who wants to stay active outdoors and have fun. This winter alone, the club scheduled weeklong trips to Nevada and Oregon, weekend trips to Minnesota and Michigan and an overnight trip to Wisconsin.

The club is hosting a meetand-greet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Knights of Columbus, 100 Infantry Drive in Joliet, to highlight this year’s trips and activities. Attendees are welcome to sign up for trips and membership applications will be available.

The Joliet Ski Club meets the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 100 Infantry Drive in Joliet.

Not everyone can join the club since members must be at least 21 years old. However, the club is family-oriented and encourages people of all ages to register for individual trips and attend social events.

“We have a member who is 82 years old and skiing with us,” club vice-president Debbie Hylek said. “It’s a sport for all ages.”

The club provides another

important benefit. It is a healthy way to spend a winter.

Instead of being miserable, cooped up inside during the winter months, ski club members are staying active outside and having fun. Even at a beginner level, skiers and snowboarders can burn more than 1,000 calories a day.

Members also save time. Instead of spending days booking and making travel arrangements for a group or family trip to a ski resort, members sign up for a trip that appeals to them.

The price includes the travel, living arrangements, some meals and lift tickets.

If someone wants to go on a trip, but does not want to become a member, they can. Associate members can register for an overnight trip for $10 and a weekend trip for $20.

‘This Is Where I Leave You’ is a funny, good ‘August: Osage County’

More Content Now For anyone still reeling from the ordeal, earlier this year, of watching “August: Osage County,” in which a father’s death reunited a dysfunctional family under one roof, resulting in much caterwauling and overacting, here’s some good news. “This Is Where I Leave You,” with a script by Jonathan Tropper, who also wrote the hit 2009 novel, is the snappy, sparkling, funny version of “August: Osage County.” Dad dies, kids come back to mom’s house for a week, arguments ensue, long-kept secrets are revealed. But you’ll be chortling rather than cringing.

Although this is a genuine ensemble piece, in which everyone gets some time to shine, the story has Judd (Jason Bateman) at its center. He remains the calm in the stormy sea of the Altman family, whose matriarch, Hillary (Jane Fonda), is a celebrity author who has written far too much, far too openly, about her family. Judd’s brothers, Paul (Corey Stoll) and Phillip (Adam Driver), are experiencing various degrees of difficulties with, respectively, a wife and an older fiancée, and with each other. Judd’s sister, Wendy (Tina Fey), is stuck in a bland marriage and still thinks about the good times with her now addled, accident victim ex-boyfriend Horry (Timothy Olyphant).

But it’s Judd we focus on because

he’s having the roughest patch. Even before his dad’s death, he discovers, in uncomfortably comic manner, in the film’s terrific introductory scenes, that his wife is sleeping with his boss, and has been for some time. Then dad dies, then he has to return to the little town he happily left long ago.

So there they all are. Mom, the kids, their spouses, their partners, all sorts of friends and relatives, along with a few people who, for whatever reason, never got to leave the little town, squeezed together in the family home to pay their respects by “sitting Shiva,” which is a traditional Jewish period of mourning, and which is an oddity in this setting because none of the characters is Jewish. On a side note, there’s also Charles Grodner (Ben Schwartz), the hippest rabbi in the history of cinema, or at least the rabbi character who believes he’s the hippest.

Director Shawn Levy has a choppy track record, jumping from the forced comedy of the remake of “The Pink Panther” to the pretty good fantasy of “Night at the Museum” and the uneven science-fictioner “Real Steel.” But he keeps successfully tight control of the irreverent funny stuff here, and makes great use of sharp actors delivering Jonathan Tropper’s fast-moving dialogue, just about all of which flows naturally.

It’s always nice to see Jane Fonda in a comic role. Here she’s as adept at presenting Hillary as a free spirit, as a

concerned mom who is forgiving of all of her kids’ many faults, and as a woman who enjoys showing off her buxom figure, even if, maybe especially if, it makes her kids uncomfortable.

Complications for these folks never seem to stop piling on. Judd bumps into his old flame Penny (Rose Byrne), and there are definitely some unresolved issues there. Judd’s cheating wife Quinn (Abigail Spencer) arrives, uninvited, with some interesting, plot-twisting news. Youngest brother Phillip, the true free spirit of the Altman clan, finally admits that he’s “the family screw-up.”

You’ve gotta wonder, can’t anybody in this movie be happy?

Yes, they can. But the film doesn’t need the off-putting distraction of a little kid running through the scenes, dragging and using a portable potty for comic effect, or to make the characters smile. It’s nice that in the midst of all of the film’s comedy and chaos and emotional complications, there are moments of tenderness. It’s even nicer that, in the end, all of the story’s up-and-down complexities are clearly explained, and will leave viewers satisfied and smiling.

• “This Is Where I Leave You” is written by Jonathan Tropper and directed by Shawn Levy. The film stars Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Adam Driver, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll and Rose Byrne. It is rated R.

Daughter appalled by treatment of dad’s ashes

His flaw is extremely serious

Dear Abby: My dad died in April after a brief illness. Before he passed, my stepmother encouraged him to donate his body to science because she is to be buried with her first husband, and she didn’t want the expense of burying Dad. I went to pick up my father’s ashes as she requested. When I got there, she invited me into her bedroom to see that she had made a shrine to her first husband, who had died three years before she and Dad were married. The one photo she had of Dad was 2 inches by 3 inches, and was the one from his memorial invitation.

Abby, she was married to my dad for 30 years. He supported her, took care of her, and worked to the age of 75 to keep her happy – and that was a task!

As I reached the front door, I remembered what I was there for in the first place – my dad’s ashes.

They were still in the UPS wrap,

Everything about him is what I want in a guy.

He’s handsome, kind, intelligent, considerate, romantic and has a great build.

Time is of the essence in treating heart attack Dear Doctor K: Can you tell me what happens when someone having a heart attack gets to the hospital?

Dear Reader: You’re going about your day when you suddenly start to sweat and become short of breath. You feel a crushing pressure in your chest. You think: “This is it. I’m having a heart attack.”

A heart attack occurs when one of the coronary arteries, blood vessels that supply the heart, becomes fully or partially blocked.

The blood carries nutrition – oxygen, sugar and other molecules – that every tissue needs to survive.

It also carries away the waste material made by the cells. Any tissue that is completely deprived of a blood supply dies. That includes the heart muscle. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

If you think you may be having a heart attack, call 911. Don’t ask a friend or relative to drive you to the hospital. An ambulance will take you to the emergency department (ED).

When you arrive at the ED, the staff have three immediate challenges: • They need to assess how sick you are.

tion to make the diagnosis: Are your symptoms caused by a heart attack or by another condition?

• They need to give you treatments to relieve your suffering and to minimize the heart damage, if you are indeed having a heart attack.

The ED staff will immediately check your pulse and blood pressure and will take your electrocardiogram (ECG), if you haven’t already had one in the ambulance. They also will take a blood sample for various diagnostic tests.

Physicians will use the ECG, along with blood tests and your symptoms, to confirm that you are having a heart attack or to diagnose another condition that is the cause of your symptoms.

If you are having a heart attack, the doctors will start an intravenous line so that they can rapidly give you medicines. They will hook you up to a heart monitor to identify the development of dangerous heart rhythms.

Finally, they usually will give you oxygen, aspirin and possibly oth-

er medicines to minimize heart damage.

When I was a medical student, there was not much more that could be done. Specifically, there was no way to open up the blockage in the coronary arteries that was causing the heart attack.

Today, there are powerful new treatments for restoring blood flow to the heart and preventing further blockages.

One way to restore blood flow is to perform a procedure called angioplasty. Another way is to administer intravenous clot-busting drugs. Time is of the essence: The faster blood flow is restored to the heart, the greater your chances of surviving and recovering.

As soon as you are stable, you’ll be encouraged to sit up and then stroll the halls. This helps keep blood clots from forming and begins to strengthen your heart.

It sounds frightening. But if you have a heart attack and reach the hospital in time, chances are very good that you will survive – and walk out of the hospital within a week.

That is an interesting concept.

I wonder how he typed while swimming.

When the card play has finished, the contract will either be underwater or have floated safely ashore. If it has been defeated, though, declarer should not worry about how far it has sunk, as long as he took his best shot to make the contract. (Yes, if you are playing in a pair event scored by matchpoints, that is not necessarily true.)

In this deal, South is in three no-trump. After West leads the diamond king, how should declarer swim?

North’s jump-shift rebid guarantees extra values and forces to game.

South starts with six top winners: four hearts, one diamond and one club. In addition, he hopes to take either four club tricks or three clubs and one spade.

First, South should hold up dummy’s diamond ace until at least the second round to confirm the split. Yes, it is likely to be 6-0 or 5-1 because otherwise West would probably have led a different suit (presumably spades).

Declarer takes the second trick with dummy’s diamond ace, cashes his hearts and runs the club 10.

East wins with his king and shifts to a low spade. What should South do?

If West has the spade ace, the contract will drown. So declarer should play his spade king. Here, it wins and the contract comes up for air. But if the king loses, South has potentially gone down two instead of down one – a small price to pay for trying to collect a vulnerable game bonus.
