Students present city lights study

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A group of Morris Community High School students is impressing state and local officials – and it’s not the first time they’ve done so.

In a Morris Street and Alley Committee meeting Wednesday night, students discussed the results of their summer study on Liberty Street traffic lights. In August, the students presented their findings concerning Route 47 lights to city council and to Illinois Department of Transportation representatives.

The students concluded that lights on Route 47 and Liberty Street are timed in a manner that encourages speeding and other unsafe driving habits.

They recommended the lights be upgraded or optimized.

told the committee that after asking drivers, they complained about needing to speed up or to stop. Some avoid the street entirely.

Students performed test drives of Liberty Street over the summer to gather data.

Their study found that of the seven lights observed, drivers were stopped at four on average. In one test run, senior Alyssa Trobl was stopped at all seven lights.

“I think you guys gave us a good challenge,” Alderman Randy Larson said. “We have to go do some digging, there’s no way around it.”

The lights themselves are six or seven years old, but the equipment coordinating them is 20 years old. The students suggested upgrading the equipment so the lights could communicate with one another.

The students found the lights tend to drift apart in timing after a while, but they weren’t able to tell what time period elapsed before they typically start to drift, be it a week or a month, for example.

Conversion to a modern fiber-optic traffic light system would cost about $10,000 an intersection, the students found. The committee said if it were to spend for the project, it would be next year at the earliest.

Larson said he’d like for the committee to consult with Ayers Electric and Chamlin and Associates about possible alternatives, such as making sure the lights are more frequently checked for synchronization.

Liberty Street is not a main thoroughfare. The speed limit is 20 miles an hour because it’s a business district with

considerable parking and a lot of pedestrians, Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

“I think we need a little more data gathered, but I don’t see any reason we can’t come up with something,” Larson said.

Aldermen Bill Martin and Don Hansen agreed. The committee will continue to communicate on the issue and bring in the students for a meeting when anything significant happens.

The project sprouted from Exelon Dresden Generating Station teaming up with Morris High School in an ongoing effort to provide students with opportunities in the workforce.

“You’re doing more than I did when I was your age,” Larson told the group. “You’ve got Exelon, IDOT, the city and teachers backing you.”

• Mary Helmick, 32, of Lima, Ohio, was indicted for forgery, a Class 3 felony.

• Michael McCarty, 26, of Joliet, was indicted for domestic battery, a Class 4 felony.

• Erica Mukes, 32, of Ottawa, was indicted for the unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

• Greg Munoz, 26, of Plainfield, was indicted for driving while revoked, a Class 4 felony.

• Justeen Negray, 18, of Streator, was indicted for the unlawful possession of heroin, a Class 4 felony.

• Natasha Nelson, 27, of Coal City, was indicted for retail theft of more than $300, a Class 3 felony.

INDICTMENTS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced Wednesday that the grand jury has returned the following indictments. The public is advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

Coal City Fire District discusses damage, looks forward to repairing station

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – While Coal City residents battle with their insurance agencies and begin to rebuild, the Coal City Fire District is preparing to move forward with rebuilding Fire Station 2, which was damaged by the June 22 EF3 tornado.

Coal City Fire Chief James Sheldon said the district is on its third insurance claim adjuster since the tornado wrapped a metal tower around the firehouse, piercing through the roof and into a water storage tank.

“Our third adjuster met with us on Labor Day. He deals with high-dollar loss claims and has worked hard to get us back on track to rebuilding,” Sheldon said. “We’ve had two structural engineers come out and both recommended repairing the building.”

He said the first adjuster showed up right after the tornado and was gone about a week later when the district was given a second adjuster who based his claim off the first structural engineer’s report – which the district felt left out some necessary repairs.

Sheldon said it has been determined some of the west wall at the back of the structure will need to come down. That wall was directly impacted by the tower right next to it.

From the training room at the front of the building, daylight streams in from the top of the wall where the roof meets its south side.

The station was manned at the time of the tornado, and public information officer Lt. Nick Doerfler said staff took cover in an interior shower area; the ceiling of that area shows damage just above where the firefighters sought protection.

As they move forward with repairs, that shower area will be converted into a tornado shelter, allowing better coverage if the area is hit again.

Since the tornado, the district has been providing emergency services out of Station 1 in De Witt Place.

“The equipment all fits in Station 1, where it was housed before we built Station 2,” Doerfler said. “Since Station 2 was built, the only vehicle we’ve bought was a pickup truck, so there is space for them to run

when Smith spoke in Naperville on Sept. 1 he questioned the reliability of the results.

“I have no response at this time until I am able to see how my own students performed,” Halloran said.

Officials from other school districts in the region also urged caution when considering the results.

Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman, said the results are “very preliminary” and no local results have been given yet. The low scores make sense because it’s a “new test, higher standards,” he said.

“No one should be concerned or panicking. It doesn’t mean the students are less prepared or the teachers are not doing their job. It just means the system has changed,” Hernandez said.

The number that jumped out at Tim Reilly, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 assistant superintendent for curriculum, was the zero percent of high school students exceeding expectations in math and only 17 percent meeting expectations.

“That’s a massive problem with the test,” Reilly said.

Reilly said he was concerned local test scores will not be released until late fall, giving districts a shorter amount of time to adjust. He also was concerned about how data between schools will compare since districts were allowed to test any group of students they wanted when it came to mathematics.

According to ISBE, the first year of PARCC testing will serve as the baseline for future test scores. In response to school districts, the exam will return next spring with a “shorter, simplified format to improve the testing process.”

MORRIS – Initial test scores for a new statewide assessment of student academic performance released Wednesday showed less-than-stellar results – but some state and local school officials stressed the results were only preliminary.

District- and student-level scores for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers will be released in November, according to Illinois State Board of Education officials.

The preliminary state-level PARCC results from tests given to students last spring show 26 to 35 percent of students in elementary to high school grade levels met expectations for English language arts and literacy. Between 17 and 31 percent of those same students met mathematics expectations from the test.

Between 2 and 8 percent of students exceeded expectations for English language arts and literacy and between zero and 5 percent of students scored as well for mathematics.

The PARCC exam replaces the Illinois Standard Achievement Test for grade-school students and the Prairie State Achievement Examination for 11th-graders. The exam is based on Common Core standards.

Tony Smith, state superintendent of education, warned school districts in a Sept. 11 letter of low PARCC results compared to the ISAT and PSAE. In 2013 and 2014, more than 40 percent of students failed the old exams statewide.

Smith’s letter stated the numbers are not final and told school leaders he does not “want anyone to use these results to shame teachers or schools.”

Corn Fest-goers asked to hold parade floats SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – The Home for the Holidays Parade Committee is inviting those who participated in the 67th Annual Corn Festival Parade to “hold their floats” and register for this year’s Annual Lighted Holiday Parade, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 27.

The HFTH Parade Committee encourages any group or individual to participate in the November parade, which begins at the corner of Franklin and Washington streets and concludes at Chapin Park with the annual lighting. The only requirement for any entry is the use of lights.

Lights for entries may be battery powered, glow lights or electrical lights powered by generators or electrical inverters. Entrants need to be in the

lineup area between 3:30 and 5 p.m.

The holiday parade has been a staple on the Home for the Holidays calendar for many years, but the lighted nighttime lighted parade has been an overwhelming success in more recent years.

The parade will conclude at Chapin Park where the fun will continue with carols from the Coal City High School Madrigals, visits with Santa and more.

Prairie Day returns to Goose Lake

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Not many people know bats are beneficial to the environment.

But residents can learn how, as well as the purpose of skunks – and what to do if you are sprayed by one – at the 18th annual Prairie Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday as a part of National Prairie Week.

It’s being held at Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area, 5010 N. Jugtown Road, in Morris.

“We have a world of information available here,” said Susie Johnson, president of Goose Lake Prairie Partners.

In addition to the Incredible Bats presentation by Daniel and Sharon Peterson, there also will be presentations by Dave Di Naso’s Traveling World of Reptiles and “The Spoon Man” Jim Cruise from Michigan, who will play heavy metal and rap songs on spoons and lead a sing-along competition.

“He’ll also teach people how to play the spoons,” Johnson said.

Dr. Sam Heads, who comes to Goose Lake Prairie for the first time. Heads will show and discuss real 20 million-year-old amber-encased fossilized insects. In addition to traveling the world, Heads just returned from an expedition in southwest Montana, Johnson said.

“This is also an area famous for its fossils,” Johnson said.

“What better way to celebrate that then having a fossil expert here?”

Returning once again will be Lou Aiello’s Traveling American Indian Museum on the front lawn of the visitor’s center, where visitors can learn about the many aspects of the life of American Indians from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Wagon rides and trail walks are other activities visitors can participate in.

Presentations are free because of a sponsorship by Exelon Generation’s Dresden Station. Site communications manager Bob Osgood said as close neighbors along the river, Exelon is committed to the environment and keeping it maintained. Sponsoring this event helps with that goal, he said.

“It’s an extensive area to

keep natural,” Osgood said.

“We believe in partnering in environmental stewardship and are fully behind environmental education.”

Johnson said they typically have about 300 visitors on Prairie Day. Many visitors return yearly, but she said Goose Lake Prairie Partners is anxious for more new people to come out to the event. SBA closing disaster loan center Thursday SHAW MEDIA COAL CITY – The U.S. Small Business Administration is closing its temporary disaster loan outreach center in Coal City on Thursday.

The center will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, according to an SBA news release. It is at the Coal City Public Library, 85 N. Garfield St. Low-interest disaster loans are available through the SBA

for area businesses, homeowners and renters. Storms, flooding and tornadoes in June and July caused severe damage in Grundy County.

This is much higher than most buyers would guess. It is important to point out that the asking price is the price at the time of the offer. HELP CRIME VICTIMS of GRUNDY COUNTY

I’ve had these silver fillings in my mouth for years and they don’t hurt, but my dentist says I need to have them replaced with crowns and white fillings. Does this work really need to be done?

A:

These silver fillings are called amalgam fillings. They are composed of mercury, silver, tin, and other various metals.The amalgam fillings itself do not pose any sort of health risks, but do pose a risk on teeth. Amalgams are not chemically bonded onto the tooth and since they are made from metal, they tend to expand and contract inside of the tooth. This constant expansion and contraction causes the amalgam filling to separate microscopically from the tooth creating gaps. In these microscopic gaps, bacteria can enter the tooth causing decay underneath the filling. Because of the nature of the amalgam fillings, sometimes the decay cannot be detected using an x-ray or even seen with the eye. By the time the decay is found using an x-ray, the decay is large and root canal treatment might be necessary. Also, amalgam fillings can cause cracks in teeth, especially the larger the filling and the longer it has been in the mouth. These cracks are often asymptomatic, but over time, the crack becomes larger and the tooth will either fracture or start to hurt. If the tooth fractures, then a crown will be necessary and maybe a root canal.

If the tooth becomes symptomatic, then a root canal and crown may be the only choice to save the tooth. Having the amalgam fillings removed before cracks form is the ideal situation because typically, those amalgam fillings can be replaced with the white composite fillings. Waiting too long to replace amalgam fillings will end up in larger treatment costing more money and possibly more discomfort.

SENECA – Grundy County Land Use Department will hold an Electronics Waste Event for Grundy County residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 26. The event will be at the Seneca Police Department, 340 N. Cash St. in Seneca.

BRIEF Fern Dell holding annual cemetery walk Oct. 17

NEWARK – Fern Dell Historic Association will host its fifth annual Cemetery Walk starting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Millington Newark Cemetery on South Church Street in Newark. Several former residents and historical figures will be highlighted at this year’s walk.

Grave sites will be lit and have history recited at each. Golf carts will be available for those who have trouble walking.

Subway co-founder DeLuca dead at 67

By CANDICE CHOI The Associated Press NEW YORK – Subway co-founder Fred DeLuca, who turned a sandwich shop he started as a teenager into the world’s largest fast-food chain, died Monday evening.

He was 67.

DeLuca’s death came two years after Subway said he had been diagnosed with leukemia and was scaling back on his leadership role at the company.

It also came just weeks after the 50th anniversary of Subway, which is known for its “Footlong” sandwiches and says it has more than 44,000 locations around the world.

The company traces its roots to 1965, when DeLuca opened a sandwich shop at the age of 17 to help pay for college. The idea came from a family friend, Peter Buck, who was co-founder and provided the $1,000 to start the business.

DeLuca and Buck opened their first store in Bridgeport, Connecticut under the name “Pete’s Super Submarines,”

with the priciest sub selling for 69 cents. The name was changed to the snappier “Subway” in 1968, and the pair decided to fuel growth by franchising, or letting others open Subway stores in exchange

for fees. By 1988, Subway had 2,000 locations. By 1990, it reached the 5,000-store mark.

And by 1994, it had more than 8,000 locations.

Subway, based in Milford, Connecticut, is privately held and doesn’t publicly report its financial performance or executive pay packages. But this year, Forbes magazine pegged DeLuca’s net worth at $3.5 billion, making him the 259th-richest individual in the United States.

In July 2013, Subway announced that DeLuca had been diagnosed with leukemia. It said DeLuca was in regular contact with his management team, but on a reduced basis as he received treatment.

Then earlier this summer, Subway said DeLuca’s younger sister, Suzanne Greco, would take over as president and oversee day-to-day operations. DeLuca remained CEO. The company did not immediately say Tuesday if a successor had been named as CEO.

Morris nurse honored as August Fire Starter

For Carey, having a positive attitude and helping to create a positive environment is something that has been an inherent part of who she is ever since she was a child.

“That was one of my mother’s philosophies,” added Carey. “Make the most of any situation and be positive. I’m also living up to the example set by my dad [retired Morris Hospital courier Don Dix], who was also a Morris Hospital Fire Starter.”

In early civilizations, fire starters were the individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. As Fire Starter of the Month, Carey received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a Morris Hospital clothing item of her choice, a special “Fire Starter” lapel pin and a designated parking spot for the month.

I awoke the morning of September 11th this last Friday mindful of the significance of the day. Images on the morning news reminded me of exactly what I was doing when the world changed. I started my day hoping that it would be a peaceful one without incident. As I arrived at work I lowered our flag to half staff and I immersed myself in those important tasks that all of us in our chosen profession accomplish every day.

That morning seven United States Military Veterans walked in to our funeral home, members of the Morris Color Guard in full dress attire complete with white gloves and presented our funeral home with a plaque that read the following…

“In appreciation of Fred C. Dames Funeral Home for continued support in honoring our departed veterans.”

I didn’t know what to say, here standing before me were real heroes on one of the most significant and emotional days in our nation’s history and they are giving us recognition, it left me with great pause. On behalf of our family and a grateful community, thank you to the Morris Color Guard, Veterans Organizations, all active military, intelligence services, fire, police and all those who keep us safe. Without you, America could never be the land of the free and the home of the brave.

In the words of her co-workers, she is happy, personable, helpful, genuine and inspiring.

For these reasons, Carey of Minooka was selected Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ August Fire Starter of the Month.

“Donna is an absolute ray of sunshine to everyone she encounters, whether it’s patients, employees … really, to everyone around,” said Erin Kotowski, site supervisor of the Channahon Healthcare Center. “She has insight to know who needs help without them even asking, and she is willing to help with anything. She is one of the most genuine, happiest people I’ve ever encountered.”

When Carey joined the team at the Channahon Healthcare Center in March 2013, she was no stranger to Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, having worked in various physician offices in previous years. She found her niche in her current role with endocrinologist Nuzhat Chalisa, M.D., where she enjoys establishing long-term relationships with patients.

“Nursing has so many different facets,” said Carey, who became a nurse because she enjoys working with people. “I love my current role because it’s all about patient education and helping people with lifestyle changes. Many of our patients are often nervous about their diagnosis and their new medications, and we go through step by step education to introduce them to their disease. Interacting with the patients and providing them with education is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Co-worker Laura Hernandez has witnessed Carey’s interactions with patients firsthand and calls her a true patient advocate.

“Working in health care, our top priority is patient care and satisfaction,” Hernandez wrote in nominating Carey as Fire Starter of the Month. “I believe this is something that

The Morris football team plays host to one of its top rivals, Sterling.

While Morris has been a fixture among the state’s elite programs for nearly 40 years, Sterling is the team that comes in with a big reputation this season – the Golden Warriors are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A in the latest Illinois high school AP poll, with Morris among the others receiving votes in Class 4A. Sterling is 3-0, having scored 126 points in those wins, while Morris is 2-1 heading into the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game.

Those numbers don’t faze Morris coach Alan Thorson.

“We get to go against a good football team that has a very good offense,” he said. “I am excited about this week.”

Sterling’s offense runs through senior quarterback Sterling Thornton, a double threat with his arms and his legs.

“He’s one of those players that you have to account for on every play,” Thorson said about Thornton. “He’s a very good runner, but he’s no slouch with his arm, either. He can throw from the pocket and he’s very good throwing on the run as well. He’s one of those guys that you can do everything right on defense and he still makes something out of it.

“We are going to have to do our jobs. Besides the quarterback, they have a lot of other good athletes and they have a lot of speed. But I think our team this year really matches up with anybody, speed-wise.”

Thorson pointed out that the Sterling receiving corps consists of Jordan Asbury, Reid Blackburn, Grant Jacoby and Turner Morse – all quality receivers. Asbury, he said, is the top target. Sophomore running back Latrell Vaughn also can be dangerous.

“Asbury has good speed and real good hands,” Thorson said. “And the other guys have a lot of catches, too. They real-

And, as if a 29-28 overtime loss to Sterling last season wasn’t enough motivation, the Redskins will be at home after two weeks of lengthy road trips to Washington and Dundee-Crown, as well as having the 2005 Class 6A state championship team being honored at halftime.

“We’re excited to be at home,” Thorson said. “Those were two long road trips, so to be back where we are comfortable will be nice. We showed last week that we can respond Hetal Amin, M.D. to a loss, but now we have to see how we handle winning.

Note that if West had led the club seven, top of nothing, East would have assumed it was from a doubleton and tried to cash a third club trick. Then, though, South would have collected an overtrick, not an undertrick.

Sapphires pass as diamonds in a case of mistaken identity Dear Abby: Last year I gave my new (at that time) girlfriend, “Alyssa,” a pair of earrings for her birthday.

They were in a box from a department store marked “fine jewelry.” She loved them and became emotional in expressing her gratitude. I thought it was because it was the first piece of jewelry I had ever bought for her.

When she opened the box I explained that they were her birthstone – sapphires – but WHITE sapphires. In her excitement she must have missed that part.

The earrings are large – maybe one carat apiece.

Yesterday I overheard my granddaughter ask Alyssa if they were real diamonds, and
