By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A Missouri man who claimed he was kidnapped after a night out with coworkers was arrested Tuesday by officers with Illinois State Police District 5, according to a news release from ISP. The car he was traveling in was located along Interstate 55 near Channahon.

After an inv e s t i g a t i o n , James J a m e s S t a m - Stamer er, 32, of St. Charles, Missouri, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of disorderly conduct, a Class 4 felony, according to the news release.

Family and friends of Stamer reported to police that he sent them text and social media messages during the early morning hours Tuesday that he was being held “against his will” in a vehicle traveling north on Interstate 55, according to the news release. He asked family members to call state police for help.

Several calls also were made about 1 a.m. Tuesday from Stamer’s cellphone to the Logan County 911 dispatch center, the news release stated, prompting state police to

request assistance from other state and local police departments in locating Stamer.

Police determined that the claims were a hoax perpetuated by Stamer, without the knowledge of the driver of the vehicle he was in, according to the news release.

Channahon Deputy Police Chief Adam Bogart said Tuesday his department was not involved with locating Stamer or the investigation.

“Due to the collaborative efforts of state and local law enforcement agencies, this situation concluded without incident,” state police Capt. Darryl Bogard said in the news release. “The Illinois State Police take these types of allegations very seriously and will ensure to actively enforce all violations of the law, including false reports.”

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On Oct. 2, J.D. Flood will close the office door adorned with his name and title – public defender – for the last time.

He will descend two flights of stairs that echo with each footstep in the Grundy County Courthouse.

He will walk through the security area and out the front door, leaving behind a job he has held for more than 30 years.

A job he loves.

“I’ve seen a lot done since I was named public defender in April 1985,” Flood said. “I hope I made a positive difference to the people I have represented.”

Flood is retiring the same day he turns 64, but he doesn’t plan to leave the courthouse completely: He plans to stay on to help with drug court, a specialty court he helped create.

The Grundy County Drug Court started in late 2007 with the purpose of helping offenders return to the community as productive members. It is the one initiative Flood said he is most proud of being involved in during his tenure.

“It took us a long time to realize that putting people in cages on top of people doesn’t solve the problem,” Flood said.

“Specialty courts are much more effective and cost considerably less. I’m not ready to give it up.”

Judge Robert Marsaglia said Flood is a true believer and a moving force in making drug court work.

“His heart is always in it,” Marsaglia said. “For the past eight to 10 years, he has really invested himself in helping participants turn themselves around.”

Public defender was not the first role Flood had in the Grundy County court system.

Tornado victims set to receive aid in October

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Long Term Recovery Committee in charge of the distribution from the relief fund for victims of the June 22 EF3 tornado said it will begin distributing money in October to affected residents.

To date, there is $299,235.54 in the fund managed by the Community Foundation of Grundy County. About $20,000 of that was in place before the tornado and will remain in the fund in the event of another disaster.

Operation St. Nick and Community Foundation of Grundy County each donated $10,000 to the fund after the Diamond tornado.

Coal City ball fields in need of cleanup Area baseball, softball representatives ask village board when cleanup will begin

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Coal City Area Baseball and Softball League asked municipal officials Monday night what to expect in regard to cleanup of the girls and boys baseball fields on village property that were damaged by the June 22 EF3 tornado.

“No one sees any improvements to the fields,” said Kevin Bach, vice president of softball with the league. “Oct. 1 we start registering, and we don’t want to lose our kids to other towns.”

He said the league was willing to help with tearing down dugouts and damaged fences if it receives permission from the village.

Village Administrator Matt Fritz said the fields are covered by insurance and the village is probably only out the deductible, but staff has not yet received amounts from the insurance company.

League board member Rich Pelnarsh said he doesn’t understand why the village

hasn’t been there yet, because of safety issues with sharp fence pieces and the damage to the pavilion.

“For safety, those should have been done,” Pelnarsh said.

Fritz said he expects to get a final report from the insurance company this week, so the village can begin cleanup efforts after receiving it. He said village officials had hoped to use volunteers to aid in the cleanup; if the league had parents who were willing to help, the village would get dumpsters there for the removal of debris.

“It is covered, and you can tell people that you have the commitment to get it done as quickly as we can,” Mayor Terry Halliday said. “The board is aware and committed to getting the fields fixed.”

Coal City Police Chief Tom Best asked the league to contact the police department before cleanup because of police security cameras in the park, so officers could remove them if the devices are among the debris.

A Brush With Kindness is a nationwide effort led by Habitat for Humanity International to serve low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes.

ABWK focuses on exterior home repairs, and Executive Director Sarah Peterson said it was the next logical step for Habitat for Humanity expansion.

“It’s a way for us to service more residents,” Peterson said. “With our homebuilding program, we can only help

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Because of a lack of applicants for a part-time Spanish teaching position, the three full-time Spanish teachers at Morris Community High School will work and be paid a little more.

The District 101 Board voted, 5-0, on Monday, with members Delores Robinson and Thomas Anderson absent, to approve teaching overloads for teachers Diane Lincoln, Leigh Ann Grabowski and Becky Ortega.

Each teacher will teach one more class a day this year and be compensated with the equivalent to one-sixth of their base salary. The compensation ranges from about $6,900 to $8,600 based on the teacher pay scale.

“The cost is about $7,000 less than our part-time Span-

ish teacher last year,” District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said.

In August, Coal City High School and Morris Community High School aimed to share a Spanish teacher who would spend the first half of his or her day in Coal City and the second half in Morris. That effort was unsuccessful.

“Due to the inability for us to fill the posted part-time Spanish position, we have implemented one period of overload for each Spanish teacher,” Halloran said.

The class size stayed the same as planned, and no students were forced to drop the class.

“We want to meet the needs of our student schedules,” Halloran said.

In other news, the board voted, 5-0, to approve a band and choir trip to New Orleans in 2016. The cost is about $875

a student and is scheduled for spring break.

The board also approved, 5-0, a July 2017 trip to Las Vegas for industrial tech students. The students will attend a trade show hosted by The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers, the largest national trade association in the United States and which represents the interests of companies that supply the home and commercial furnishings industry.

A maximum of 20 students can attend at a cost of about $500 a student. Industrial tech teacher Mark Smith told the board it’s not the typical trip to Las Vegas.

“Students will have the opportunity to meet industry leaders,” Smith said. “I’ve had students eventually gain scholarships and job offers from networking at this show.”

To date, industries have invested about $340,000 in donations to Morris High School’s program, and Smith will work to get secure donations for the trip.

Hospital to host golf outing, dinner SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Hospital Auxiliary will host its annual Golf Outing and Bridge/ Euchre Tournament on Monday at the Morris Country Club, 2615 Route 6, Morris.

Guests are invited to golf, play cards or have a casual dinner, with all proceeds benefiting the Morris Hospital LifeLine and Patient Transportation programs.

He was proud to have traveled to over thirty countries with his beloved wife, Roberta. Wayne had many hobbies, but his greatest joy came from golfing. He was proud to have golfed the old course at St. Andrews in Scotland, with his brothers-in-law, Bill and Jessie.

Flood has had his battles outside the courtroom – he’s fought colon cancer, which he said is not the deciding factor in retiring now.

The Southern Peanut Growers’ just wrapped up its annual PB My Way Recipe Contest, which brought in unique entries from peanut butter lovers across the United States.

Here are two of the tasty winning recipes.

ORANGE-KISSED PEANUT BUTTER BUNDT 6 tablespoons butter, melted 1 cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup orange juice

1 tablespoon orange zest 2 cups brown sugar, packed 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup buttermilk Frosting ingredients: 1⁄3 cup creamy peanut butter 3 tablespoons orange juice ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1½ cups powdered sugar ½ cup whipped cream Chopped peanuts for garnish Heat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease and flour a Bundt pan. Set aside. In a large bowl mix together butter, peanut butter, orange juice and orange zest until well combined and creamy. Beat in sugar, eggs and vanilla.

Combine flour, baking soda and salt, then stir half into peanut

Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté onion and pepper in peanut oil until tender.

Add garlic and cook an additional minute. Reduce heat and add coconut milk, peanut butter, Island teriyaki sauce, crystallized ginger, hot pepper flakes and brown sugar. To serve: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook shrimp 2 to 3 minutes on each side until tender.

Move shrimp to outer edge of pan and cook coleslaw mix in center just until it starts to wilt. Add wilted slaw mix to ramen sauce mixture. Divide ramen among four plates and top with 4 or 5 shrimp.

Garnish with reserved sauce, peanuts and scallions if desired.

Layne Kief started the set with a kill and Korte had three more kills as Morris led 6-4. Ashley Hood then had three straight aces and a Ryan Friend kill gave Morris a 10-4 lead. With Korte at the service line, Morris extended its lead to 15-5 with Friend adding another kill. Katy Smith delivered a block to put Morris ahead 19-6 before Korte made it 24-12 with a kill and ended the match with a block.

“This was an exciting match,” Lafond said. “We work on our defense and our blocking every day at practice, and it really showed tonight. The girls didn’t want to let the ball

hit the floor.

“We had a few different lineups out there. We are still searching for that one lineup, but switching things up also keeps the girls on their toes.

We tried Corrine Day at libero during the Pontiac Tournament and she really stepped up and played well tonight. And we put Ryan Friend in the middle to mix things up. She’s really quick on the block.”

After finishing last in the NIB 12 East last year, all that mattered to Korte was the win.

“A lot of girls contributed tonight,” she said. “We all work together no matter who is out there. We really wanted this conference win, and we got it.”

MORRIS – It was a night of records for Morris volleyball player Kaylin Korte on Tuesday. The Redskins defeated Sycamore, 25-23, 21-25, 25-12, to open Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

Before the match, it was announced that Korte, who will play for University of Illinois next season, broke the school record for both kills and kill attempts over the weekend at the Pontiac Tournament. The previous kill record was held by Tory Rezin, while the previous kill attempt record was held by Korte’s sister, Kendall.

Before the match, Morris coach Taylor Lafond surprised her with a present and announcement.

To top off the night, she set her personal single-match kill record at 23 as the Redskins (69, 1-0) rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the first set to win and set the tone for the match.

“I didn’t know I had broken the records,” she said. “It’s an awesome feeling. It was my goal since freshman year to set records, so it’s a great feeling to do it. I am more focused on getting 1,000 kills in my career, so I didn’t know I had the record.”

Korte entered the match with 821 kills in her career and it looked like she might reach 1,000 on Tuesday. At the end of the night, she finished with 23 – a personal best.

From the start, it looked like it might be a quick match in the wrong direction, as Sycamore owned an 18-11 lead in the first set. But Morris bounced back, getting three kills from Korte and an ace from Addison Polite during a 10-2 run that resulted in a 21-20 lead. Sycamore tied it at 21, but Morris took the lead for good off a Spartan hitting error and another Korte kill to go ahead, 23-21. The two teams traded points and then Sycamore pulled to within 24-23 before a rotation error ended the set.

The tables turned in the second set, as Morris led 8-5 in the early going, only to see Sycamore come back to take a 20-14 lead and control a 25-21 win.

“Kaneland struggled to get a goal on us the first half only because Matt Borgstrom had 14 amazing saves,” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“The second half was a different story. Kaneland put one in within the first two minutes of the half, and they were able to recapture there momentum and put two more goals.

“We are young, with seven sophomore starting and they have to learn how to play with great teams, not just good teams. They are getting a lot of experience and they will learn from this.”

The 2015-16 Blackhawks will look a whole lot different than the 2014-15 Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks. There could be five or six new forwards in the opening-night lineup. There could be two new defensemen. It’ll take weeks, if not months, if not all season, to find the right line combinations and to develop chemistry. It might be Joel Quenneville’s toughest coaching job since he came to Chica-

go. Even tougher than 2010-11, when he lost half a championship roster in much the same way.

Yet, here we are, two days from the Hawks opening camp in South Bend, Indiana, and Bovada (among other gambling sites) still has them as the favorites to repeat.

Training camp and six preseason games should give us at least some idea of how realistic that is. Here is the storyline to watch as the Hawks return

to the ice.

The Kane conundrum

It all starts with Kane, of course. The Hawks’ summer of celebration turned into a summer of silence last month when Kane became the subject of a police investigation and now a grand jury. The Hawks still haven’t said whether Kane – who is entering the first year of an eight-year, $84 million contract – will be at camp. They haven’t even announced a camp sched-

prudent thing to do is to keep Kane away from the team and have him work out on his own until the investigation reaches some sort of resolution, for better or worse. It might cost him the preseason.

There is no good answer here. Kane’s presence, fairly or unfairly, would be a massive distraction. And even without him there, Kane’s status will be the dominant storyline of camp and for the foreseeable future.

Local Jeff Gordon fans merit promotional spot “For me, it’s full circle. In his early days, we’d go to Indianapolis Raceway Park and watch him run in midgets. Then it was sprint cars.”

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Jim Messig has been a Jeff Gordon fan since the racer was a teenager wheeling midget cars around the bull rings of U.S. Auto Club. That’s back when it seemed Gordon, whose family moved from California to Indiana to further his quest, was destined for a career not in NASCAR, but in Indy car racing.

That’s more than 20 years ago.

On Sunday, the CARCARE Collision Centers chain he co-owns with fellow Gordon fan Bill Aeschliman will have its logo on Gordon’s stock car when he runs in the Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Was that the result of two fans from Joliet pooling their money and buying the spot on the Hendrick Motorsports car?

No, it was the result of two body shop guys merging their businesses nearly 20 years ago and growing it to the point that Axalta, Gordon’s main sponsor, offered them the promotional spot on the car as a reward for being a good customer.

Axalta Coating Systems – paint, quite simply – is the old DuPont paint division that DuPont, which has sponsored Gordon his entire career, sold off a few years ago.

CARCARE has been a steady customer; and as its operation has grown to 16 shops from Rockford to Effingham – with more on the way – it has used more and more paint.

“We’ll be guests of Axalta,” Messig said. “We’ve invited all our employees. We’ll have pit tours, getting a firsthand look at how NASCAR operates.”

Messig expects more than 125 employees – close to half the 280 on staff – to be in the stands Sunday. Messig and CEO Chris Ward will be in the pit area before the race and hang out in a suite during it, rooting for Gordon to grab his 93rd career victory in NASCAR’s top series.

For Aeschliman and especially Messig, the serendipity of being Gordon fans and getting to have their company’s name on his car in his last race in their town is just too good.

“For me, it’s full circle,” Messig said. “In his early days, we’d go to Indianapolis Raceway Park and watch him run in midgets. Then it was sprint cars.”

Then, when Gordon couldn’t find a ride in the old CART series, Hendrick put him in a stock car. In 1994, less than two years after his first race, he was in Victory Lane in Charlotte; a few months after that, he won the first Brickyard 400. A racing star was born.

Messig and wife, Diana, are true fans.

“We go to about 13 races a year,” Diana Messig said.

“It’s very rewarding.”

Last year, Gordon won the Brickyard 400 for the fifth time, the first driver to capture more than five races on the Indianapolis Motor

Speedway oval. Messig and Aeschliman were there.

Poor absorption of vitamin B12 may make shots necessary Dear Dr. K: I was recently diagnosed with a vitamin B12 deficiency. Can I take B12 supplements by mouth? Or do I need the shots?

Dear Reader: Tissues throughout the body need vitamin B12, especially in the brain, spinal cord and bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Vitamin B12 in the diet gets absorbed in the part of the small intestine called the ileum. There, it enters the blood. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, and problems with the bones, brain and spinal cord.

Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood basically have two causes: Either there is not enough B12 in the diet, or the B12 in the diet has trouble

B12 is found naturally only in animal products like meat, fish, poultry, eggs and milk.

Many cereals are fortified with it.

In the United States, Canada and other developed nations, there is only one relatively common situation where there is not enough B12 in the diet. Vegans, who avoid all animal-based foods, are at increased risk. I order blood tests for vitamin B12 for all my patients who are vegans.

While there is only one

common cause of B12 deficiency due to inadequate amounts of the vitamin in the diet, there are many causes of poor absorption of the vitamin by the gut.

The most serious is a disease called pernicious anemia. This autoimmune disease is caused by an attack of the immune system on the ability of the ileum to absorb vitamin B12 in food.

One of the hallmarks of pernicious anemia is that the red blood cells are both larger and less numerous than normal. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, askdoctork.com.)

Pernicious anemia was a fatal disease until the mid20th century. Scientists here

at Harvard Medical School discovered that vitamin B12 (which was extracted from the livers of animals) could be given as treatment. It was a life-saving discovery that was honored with the Nobel Prize.

In pernicious anemia, it won’t do any good to take vitamin B12 pills -- not even megadoses. The disease won’t let it get absorbed by the gut.

As a result, it won’t get into the blood and get carried to all the cells of the body that need it. So, for pernicious anemia you need the vitamin B12 shots. The vitamin B12 in the shots goes directly into the blood: It doesn’t need to be absorbed by the gut.

Besides pernicious anemia, there are other condi-

tions that interfere with the ability of the gut to absorb the vitamin. Any diseases that affect the ileum interfere with the absorption of vitamin B12. An example is Crohn’s disease.

Often, B12 shots are necessary. And if Crohn’s disease has injured the ileum badly enough that it needs to be surgically removed, then a B12 pill definitely won’t work.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll describe the other conditions that can make your vitamin B12 level low, and how to treat them.
