Grundy deputies arrest eight drivers

By SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office participated from Aug. 24 to Sept.

7 in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunken driving enforcement campaign, where deputies arrested eight offenders for driving while impaired.

In addition, 115 seat belt citations were issued, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The local effort was part of a nationwide campaign in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-

During the campaign, Grundy County sheriff’s deputies dedicated an additional 72 hours of added occupant protection enforcement, and an additional 24 hours of impaired driving enforcement during the Labor Day traffic safety campaign, according to the news release.

Authorities still investigating Diamond bank robbery

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – A spokeswoman for the FBI said there isn’t much information from the Saturday morning armed robbery at Mazon State Bank in Diamond.

A call came in at 8:20 a.m.

Saturday reporting the armed

robbery, according to Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan.

Police responded but the suspect had left the area. The investigation was handed over to the FBI, which handles bank robberies.

“We know it was a lone bank robber who was armed,” FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde

said Monday. “He was very well-covered, including a ski mask.”

She said the suspect, of unknown race, is a male between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-9, who was dressed completely in black with no skin showing.

Hyde said the suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

While it was originally reported by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office that the suspect was driving a white SUV, Hyde said authorities have no confirmed vehicle description.

She said the FBI has not found a direct correlation at this point between Saturday’s robbery and others being investigated.

County warrant for driving while license suspended. She posted bond and was issued a Sept. 24 court date in LaSalle County.

• Jeramie S. Aimone, 35, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a violation of order of protection complaint.

• Shane M. Goodwin, 23, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police Friday on charges of possession of marijuana over 10 grams but under 30 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. He posted bond and was released with an Oct. 17 court

date.

• Timothy S. Butler, 35, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was arrested

by Morris police Sunday on charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while license revoked. He also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, disobeying a traffic control device and use of electronic communications while driving.

He was booked in the Grundy County Jail and given an Oct. 17 court date.

• Charles P. Armstrong, 24, of Braidwood, was arrested

by Morris police Sunday on a

charge of driving under the combined influence of drugs and alcohol. He also was cited for disobeying a stop sign, improper lane use and operating a vehicle with one headlight.

He was booked into the Grundy County Jail and given an Oct. 19 court date.

• William M. Smith, 41, of Tinley Park, was arrested by Morris police Sunday on charges of driving under the influence, speeding, disobeying a traffic device and open liquor in the vehicle. He posted bond and was released with an Oct. 19 court date.

“It was probably one of the worst scenes in my 17 years as an officer,” he said.

MORRIS – This week, from Sept. 13 to 19, is Illinois Rail Safety Week, and Grundy County-area authorities are placing an increased focus on the city’s rails and their surrounding areas.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said similar to school zones, where officers closely monitor stop sign obedience and seat belt safety, police were given a list of various railroad violations to look out for this week.

Some of the violations are obvious, but could be taken for granted.

Officers will make sure motorists and pedestrians obey railroad signals and gates, and that pedestrians avoid walking on railroad property, which is trespassing. Dite said there will be extra patrols along Morris’ railroads this week.

“As a community with railroads, it’s something we need to be cautious about,” he said.

Where railroad safety is concerned, Illinois ranked second in the nation in vehicle collision fatalities and third in the nation in trespasser fatalities during 2014, according to a news release from the Morris Police Department.

Statewide, Illinois had 134 crossing collisions involving motor vehicles, which resulted in 55 injuries and 24 fatalities. In addition, 48 trespasser incidents that resulted in 19 injuries and 29 fatalities were reported where people trespassed on railroad property.

It’s not unheard of for incidents to take place on Morris’ railroads. A man lost his life in July while not practicing proper railroad safety, and there have been several other incidents over the years, Dite said.

District gets small boost in general state aid; revenues are up

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The District 101 Board voted, 5-0, to approve the fiscal 2016 budget Monday night. Board members Delores Robinson and Thomas Anderson were absent.

The board received good news concerning the 2016 budget.

Superintendent Pat Halloran said he and the board usually get more information from the state in September than in August when preparing a budget, and that proved to be true this year.

Because of a state board audit conducted the past year – which regarded the 2014 budget – the district will receive $167,173 more than anticipated in general state aid, Halloran said.

The audit indicated the number of out-of-district special education attendance days was under-reported, and therefore the district will receive the payment and apply it to this year’s budget.

The boost comes from estimations of a $18,523 increase in orphanage act funds, a $15,000 increase in special education personnel reimbursement, a $2,225 increase in Medicaid reimbursement, a $7,000 increase in corporate personal property replacement taxes and a $13,000 increase in outof-district tuition.

The district is expected to see a $5,169 estimated decrease in TIF revenue from the education fund.

There’s an estimated $16,071 increase from the tentative budget in education fund expenditures expected in 2016 because the district is finalizing the amount of higher education teachers enrolled in this year in accordance with the teacher pay scale.

Halloran said fiscal 2016 revenues are expected to increase 1.0 percent compared to the fiscal 2015 amended budget, completed in June, while expenditures are expected to be down 4.65 percent.

In total, fiscal 2016’s expected revenues increased $125,891 to $12,521,683, up from the previous year’s amended budget of $12,395,792.

Fiscal 2016’s total expenditures decreased $704,084 to $14,449,463, down from $15,153,547 in the previous year’s budget.

“We know we’re in bad shape, but it’s a little better news,” Board President Denny Best said.

We Care fundraiser preps at Tesdal farm

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It’s harvest time in Illinois.

As farmers head to the fields, We Care of Grundy County invites residents to the Tesdal family farm to spend a day with family and help raise money for its programs with the We Care at the Farm fundraiser.

“Tom and Cheryl [Tesdal] are so generous to open their farm to the community,” said Maureen Keegan, board president of We Care of Grundy County. “A lot of kids have never been to a farm.”

The day will be filled with hayrack rides, a scavenger hunt and face painting, among other activities.

Last year, the event was moved from Saturday to Sunday to become more family-centered.

Keegan said it worked so well, the organization is continuing that approach this year.

“I think in addition to helping We Care, it is a great community-building experience,” Keegan said. “It’s a nice event with a great purpose.”

There are more railroad crossings in Morris than ever before, and rural areas are likely more apt to violations because of the lack of crossing gates, Ator said.

That’s where the sheriff’s office comes in.

Grundy County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Sajnaj said the office has sent deputies to BNSF Railway safety courses in the past, and will be paying extra attention to railroad crossings and tracks this week. He said people will be cited if they’re caught trespassing.

Grundy County has a lot of railways, and there was a time when there were no railroad crossing arms, he said.

“People just have to be aware,” Sajnaj said. “We’ll be watching crossings, tracks and around gates.”

This week is Illinois Rail Safety Week, and Morris police are increasing patrols of railroads to keep motorists and pedestrians safe. to stop a vehicle on railroad tracks or anywhere within the highway-rail grade crossing.

Highway-rail grade crossings are typically marked by white stop lines on the pavement in advance of the crossing, and if not marked by white stop lines, the highway-rail grade crossing extends from one protective gate arm to the other.

“We want to bring more light to the situation,” Dite

said. “Hopefully people will employ safer behavior around railroad crossings.”

Informational materials on violations and safe behavior are available in the Morris Municipal Services Facility, 700 N. Division St., Morris.

At the end of the week, officers will report back with observations and citations to see how the week of increased patrol went.

Pulitzer winner Frank D. Gilroy dies at 89

By LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Frank D. Gilroy, whose play about a veteran’s fraught return home, “The Subject Was Roses,” won him a Pulitzer Prize, died Saturday in Monroe, New York.

He was 89.

He passed away of natural causes, his family announced through a statement.

Gilroy, who served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 in the European Theatre, also won a Tony Award for “The Subject Was Roses.” It premiered on Broadway in May of 1964.

He then wrote a screenplay for a 1968 film adaptation starring Jack Albertson and Patricia Neal, which would earn both supporting Oscar nominations and a win for Albertson.

Dan Gilroy, meanwhile, gained attention in the industry for the Los Angeles noir “Nightcrawler,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and his own wife, actress Rene Russo. John Gilroy, a seasoned film editor, also worked on “Nightcrawler.”

In addition to his sons, he is survived by Ruth, his wife of 62 years, and five grandchildren.

Richrath, former REO Speedwagon guitarist, dies

By MESFIN FEKADU The Associated Press NEW YORK – Gary Richrath, a former guitarist for the classic rock band REO Speedwagon who also co-wrote the group’s hit song “Take It on the Run,” died Sunday, according to a publicist for the band.

He was 65.

Erik Stein confirmed on Monday that Richrath passed away but offered no details

about the cause of death.

Richrath was born in October 1949, according to public records. He was a member of the band when it released its self-titled debut in 1971 and was with REO Speedwagon until 1989.

Richrath co-wrote some of the band’s songs, including “Take It on the Run,” which became a Top 5 pop hit on the Billboard charts.

“I feel so sad. Gary was both a unique guitarist and song-

writer, and the embodiment of the tough guy with a heart of gold. I learned most of what I know about being in a rock band from Gary Richrath,” REO Speedwagon’s lead singer, Kevin Cronin, wrote on the band’s website and Facebook page. “The entire REO Family mourns his death and shares in the grief of his family, friends, and fans. These words do not come close to expressing the depth of emotions I am feeling at this time.”

Richrath last played with the band in 2013, when the band performed a benefit concert in Bloomington, Illinois, to raise money for tornado victims.

REO Speedwagon has released a number of successful albums, including 1980’s “Hi Infidelity,” which sold 10 million copies in the United States.

Richrath released a solo album, “Only the Strong Survive,” in 1992.

Former court poet to Ceausescu, dies at age 65

By ALISON MUTLER The Associated Press BUCHAREST, Romania – Corneliu Vadim Tudor, a nationalist politician and court poet to late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who attracted audiences by saying what mainstream politicians didn’t dare, has died.

He was 65.

Tudor died Monday hours after having been admitted to the Army’s Emergency Clinic for Cardiovascular Disease, friend Marius Marinescu said.

Tudor began as a writer and poet and penned verses flattering Ceausescu. After communism collapsed, he founded the nationalist Greater Romania Party and the Greater Romania weekly, a publication which in its heyday in the early 1990s had a circulation of hundreds of thousands.

He wrote disparaging articles about Jews, Hungarians, Roma and liberal-minded Romanians. He was a lawmaker in the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014. He denied the Holocaust took place in Romania in a 2012 television interview.

During World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed in Romania and areas it controlled as an ally of Nazi Germany.

Centrue Bank is working with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to make curriculum available to Coal City area schools completely free, according to a news release.

“Banzai is a Web-based financial literacy program.

Kids get their own accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life,” Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai ,said in the release. “But because Centrue Bank is sponsoring it, local schools get it for free. More than ever, it’s important that kids develop

sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world, and Centrue Bank realizes that, and they’re doing something about it.”

Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks that aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education.

It has become the largest program of its kind, servicing more than 15,000 teachers in all 50 states.

Centrue Bank has offered time, money, industry experience and a variety of bank resources to help Coal City area schools teach personal finance in the classroom.

Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget – but it’s not always easy.

Week 4 is a proving ground for local teams VIEWS Rob Oesterle Even though it seems like it just started, the high school football regular season is one-third completed. It might seem strange to be talking about the playoffs after only three games, but with only nine games a year, each week carries significant weight.

After three weeks, all four area teams have a winning record, so that certainly bodes well. Minooka is 3-0 for the first time since 2010, and Morris, Coal City and Seneca all check in with 2-1 marks.

No team has lost by more than a touchdown.

Week 4 promises to put the area teams to the test.

Minooka hits the road to take on perennial power Oswego, which defeated defending Class 7A champion Providence Catholic in Week 2.

Although it’s only the second week of the Southwest Prairie Conference schedule, it’s not out of the question this game could decide the conference title. The Indians always have been able to put up points, but this year’s edition also seems to play the type of defense that leads to deep playoff runs.

Friday night’s game against Oswego certainly will be a litmus test for the Indians.

Morris and Sterling always seem to play tight games, and Friday night shouldn’t be any different. The Golden Warriors have been good offensively this year, putting up 126 points so far, an average of 42 a game.

Morris, meanwhile, has been stingy defensively, only allowing 27 points in its three games. Sterling handed Morris a 29-28 loss in overtime last year, so payback will be on the Redskins’ minds. Add in playing at home and the fact the 2005 Class 6A state championship team will be honored at halftime, and motivation shouldn’t be a problem.

Coal City is coming off two hard-fought games, a 20-16 loss to Wilmington and a 13-9 win over Peotone, and will add a third straight to that mix Friday night when they travel to Plano. The Reapers beat Yorkville, 28-14, in the season opener before rolling over Chicago South Shore International College Prep, 50-12, in Week 2. Last week, Plano suffered a 34-31 defeat to Manteno. The Coalers, Plano and Manteno appear to be the teams to beat in the Interstate Eight Large. A win over Plano on Friday would make Coal City’s Oct. 9 home game against Manteno the game most likely to decide the conference title.

STAFF REPORTS STREATOR – For the past three years, the Streator Cup belonged to the Morris boys soccer team. On Saturday, the Redskins faced long odds of bringing it back home. They needed to beat Streator, 3-0, to claim the title, while Streator needed just a 1-0 victory.

After the Redskins (4-4) defied the odds and beat Streator by the same score, 3-0, the cup was once again in Morris’ possession.

“We knew it was going to be a tough hill to climb,” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“We beat them, 2-1, to win the regional last year and I knew they would be hungry to beat us.

With 34:28 left in the first half, junior Josh Lain, off a deflection, brought out his dribbling skills and made a few moves to put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Morris lead. At the 15:20 mark, Lain got the ball to Matt Samolis to score for a 2-0 Redskin advantage.

With 28:48 left in the second half, Lain persisted to get

it near the box and once again got it to Samolis for his second goal of the game.

“This was an incredible game and it all came back together having Conner Shaw, Colin Webber, and Noah Poston come back from the injury list,” Valdivia said. “I gave them a pep talk about how I loved going against the odds.

When I was younger, people would always tell me I couldn’t accomplish certain goals due to the facts, and I always loved to prove them wrong. That is exactly what this team did and they did it together, not individually.

“They not only won, but they played great, getting a lot of touches and kept possessions. They stayed composed and believed that they could win this tournament.”

Morris varsity girls won the title with 67 points, well ahead of LaSalle-Peru’s second-place total of 109. Morris had five finishers in the top 17 and six in the top 30. Mya Shannon (fifth 19:49), Meghan Smith (14th,

20:48), Bridget Landers (15th, 20:52), Madi Mayberry (16th, 20:56) and Sabrina Baftiri (17th, 20:57) scored for Morris.

“Again our girls executed the pack mentality perfectly,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “Mya ran well in the second pack of competitors, but our two through five were impressive. They used each other to continue to push the pace. I think the fact that our fifth girl was less than a minute from Mya shows the improvement our girls are making.

“We will score well in bigger meets with a small one through five split. I think our new varsity runners are starting to learn some race strategy, learn how to use teammates, and also learning that they can push their bodies farther than they had thought.

I think we still have room to improve, and that’s exciting.”

In the boys race, Morris took second with 94 points, behind LaSalle-Peru. Al Alvarez (11th, 16:57), Zach Guzman (16th, 17:10), Zach Chapman (26th, 17:35), Jordan Olson (28th, 17:44) and Max Dudley (29th, 17:45) scored and

medaled for Morris.

“Zach and Al are running together, and Oly, Chappy, and Max battled for quality scoring places,” Blumberg said.

“While we had some team success, there is work to be done.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lady Irish Invitational: Seneca finished second in the tournament, dropping a 25-22, 27-25 decision to Reed-Custer in the title match. The Irish beat Peotone, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, in the semifinals. In pool play, Seneca (11-4) beat St. Anne, 25-14, 25-16; lost to Sandwich, 21-25, 25-22, 16-14; and beat Dwight, 25-14, 20-25, 15-12.

Emily Woods had team highs with 27 kills and 51 assists, while Karlie Cade had 29 service points and 39 assists.

Danielle Chismarick had 25 points and a team-high 38 digs.

Minooka picks up win over Joliet West

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After dropping a few one-goal decisions this season, Minooka boys soccer coach Chris Brolley was happy to see one of those matches finally go his team’s way.

The Indians scored twice into the wind in the second half. Their second goal answered a tying goal by Joliet West a short time later to capture a 2-1 nonconference victory.

Minooka (3-5), which dropped a 2-1 decision to highly regarded Wheaton Academy on Saturday, got Monday’s match-winner in the 66th minute when Tony Davila sent in a long pass and Austin Robare got off a close-range header

“The younger guys are stepping up. We have a lot of depth and I feel safe with anyone going into play at any position.”

“West is a good, solid team and they played hard today and knocked the ball around and made us chase them,” Brolley said. “We had to change some things at halftime to have guys in the right positions and rested and healthy. You try to look at the big picture with four games in six days but you also

want to win the game.

“They tied the game late and things could have gone the other way. Austin really picked it up by scoring the last goal today. The guys off of the bench really played well. The guys kept fighting and that was fun to see.”

West (3-4-1) pulled even in the 63rd minute when Elber Haro put in a loose ball, but the Indians kept up the pressure with Matt Dlugopolski sending a header to keeper Carlos Urbano and Robare making a run toward the net but Jayson Graves cleared his shot.

Shortly after Graves deflected a liner by Marriano Kotrba, Dlugopolski continued to go after a loose ball in the box and was fouled in the 53rd minute.

Kyle Sparks fired in the subsequent penalty to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

“Our play is definitely picking up and think that we’re going to get stronger and stronger as the season goes on,” Sparks said. “I like how everyone works hard and gives 100 percent, not only in games but also at practice every day.

After Minooka grabbed the initial lead, the Tigers countered with a try by Gerardo Nicolas that was halted by keeper Noah Jawdat and then a corner kick from Haro and a free kick from just outside of the box by Ivan Lopez that were both punched away.

At the bridge table, good communication between defenders will save a lot of points and, if there are stakes, money.

Today’s deal highlights one critical communication technique. How should the defenders card to defeat three notrump after West leads his fourth-highest club?

North used a textbook transfer sequence, bidding two hearts then three no-trump to show exactly five spades and game-going strength. South, with only a doubleton spade, had an easy pass.

Declarer starts with eight tricks: one spade, one heart, five diamonds and one club (given that the defenders will be attacking that suit). If the spade finesse is winning, there will be overtricks, but if it is losing, South could concede one spade and four clubs.

After West leads the club five, East wins with his ace – third hand high.

Then, with two cards left, he returns the club nine, starting a high-low with a remaining doubleton.

South will put up his queen, but West should realize that if his partner had begun with A-J-9-3 of clubs, he would have led back the three (low from a remaining odd number), not the nine. So now West must resist the temptation to win the trick. He must follow suit with his four, to keep communication with his partner. Then, when East gets in with his spade king, he leads his last club for down one.

Distant husband gives no support to pregnant wife Dear Abby: I’m a few months pregnant and married to a man I love with all my heart.

We have a young son together.

For the last couple of months, I have had severe morning sickness, and my husband seems to resent me for it.

He complains that I “don’t do anything anymore,” but I have been so ill that some days it’s all I can do to get to work in the morning. I try to help out as much as I can, but it doesn’t seem to be enough.

Lately, he has shown no interest in me or the pregnancy. He won’t go with me to doctors’ appointments, no longer asks me about them, and refuses even to discuss possible names for our new baby. I have been to the emergency room twice – once for
