2015’s Women of Distinction chosen Women of Distinction

In greater Grundy County, there are many strong women who touch the lives of those around them and help create an ideal quality of life.

Those women are why the Morris Herald-News is proud to host its third annual Women of Distinction awards.

This year’s recipients are Lori Cora of Coal City, Sandi Dransfeldt of Morris and Janine Petric of Streator.

Cora is a member and disaster relief coordinator at Coal City United Methodist Church. As the Coal City community was faced with the devastation and destruction of not one but two tornadoes in the last two years, Cora sprang into action, coordinating efforts to provide

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Walking through the gates Saturday of the Grundy County Fairgrounds was like walking back in time, taking Jalopy Fest visitors to an earlier, simpler time.

Participants strolled around the parking lot near the 1972 models of custom cars – and some older than that. Some people stood next to their vehicles, among them vintage models from 1964 and earlier. Many dressed in styles from the 1950s, complete with car club jackets touting names like Scapegoats and Voodoo Kings. Trucks and motorcycles accompanied the showing.

“It takes you back in time for a weekend at a time,” Kathy Alexander, of Gardner said of her weekend jalopy lifestyle.

While Alexander and her husband Dan have attended several jalopy shows, this was her first year with her very own jalopy, a 1962 Galaxy 500, a project car she has a vision for. Her vision includes the color purple, but that’s all she would give away as she sat in her 1950s dress on the hood of her car eating a lollipop.

“We want to join the club because we get to be around like-minded people,” Wayne Schmitt said. “They are always here to help.”

group and continue to grow the jalopy community and foster friendships.

The two clubs parked their cars across from one another in the gravel parking lot and stood together to discuss the latest in jalopy news, and to show what they’ve done most recently with their cars.

“We all need camaraderie,” said Gus Mavraganes, from Steger. “Everyone needs to belong, from chess clubs to the football team. The thing we have in common happens to be pre-1964 hot rods, with an emphasis on custom hot rods.

None of us drink, and many have kids they bring with.”

He said the club is a family, in every sense of the word.

They get together for birthdays, for holidays and are all just a phone call away.

“It’s an extended family, a family you didn’t get stuck with, it’s one you choose,” he said.

The event this year started on Friday night with live Rockabilly bands and continued on Saturday where they held a Pinup Girl contest, a chop top limbo contest and a flame throwing contest where cars enter a ring and spectators watched as fire shot out the tail pipes of the hot rods.

The show also featured a swap meet, and vendors selling vintage apparel, and items for the home and car.

Operation Firm Handshake COAL CITY – Two simple words – thank you – can go a long way. Veterans from all branches of the armed services were welcomed Saturday to the third annual Operation Firm Handshake at the Coal City Area Club as a way to say “Thank you.”

Area veterans organizations have teamed up the past three years to host a picnic where the only price of admittance was paid when service members served their country. The picnic, which started with only Coal City and Grundy County veterans, has been opened up to all who wish to come.

Veterans from Chicago, Morris, Gardner, Coal City and more gathered together like long-lost brothers and sisters and enjoyed good food, good music and family fun.

DIAMOND – Mazon State Bank in Diamond was the scene of an armed robbery Saturday morning, according to Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan.

“We got a call at 8:20 a.m. that there was a bank robbery,” he said. “We responded and received a basic description, but they couldn’t tell what race he was.”

Callahan said the suspect was described as being about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7, but no other information was available.

The case has been handed over to the FBI, which handles

bank robbery investigations. The FBI could not immediately be reached over the weekend.

Callahan said early reports on the type of vehicle were not clear, and authorities were waiting for surveillance video to clarify.

GOTTA DO IT MORRIS – On Sept. 21 an “About Boating Safely” course will be taught at the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 111 E. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

This two-session introductory class discusses state requirements, routine operations and recognition of safety issues. The second half of the class will be held the following Sept. 28.

In Illinois, younger boaters, aged 12 to 17, are required by law to take a boating class to operate a vessel alone.

Successful completion of About Boating Safely earns the required certificate.

This class also is good for newer boaters.

NBA great Moses Malone dies at 60

By BRIAN MAHONEY The Associated Press Moses Malone devoured rebounds so easily it sometimes seemed he missed shots on purpose to pad his total before scoring.

All those points and rebounds made Malone an NBA great.

A few words, and one championship, made him a Philadelphia sports icon.

Malone, a three-time NBA MVP and one of basketball’s most ferocious rebounders, died Sunday in Norfolk, Virginia, where was scheduled to appear at a charity golf event.

He was 60.

Malone had just attended this weekend’s enshrinement ceremonies at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Nicknamed the “Chairman of the Boards,” Malone was inducted himself in 2001 and remains in the NBA’s top 10 in career scoring and rebounding.

“With three MVPs and an NBA championship, he was among the most dominant centers ever to play the game and one of the best players in the history of the NBA and the ABA,” NBA Commissioner

Norfolk police said Malone was found unresponsive and not breathing in his room by hotel staff shortly before 8 a.m.

Norfolk Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Malone dead at the scene. A cause of death has not been determined.

A 6-foot-10 center who was the first to make the leap right from high school to the pros, Malone is the NBA’s career leader in offensive rebounds and led the league in rebounds per game for five straight seasons from 1980-85.

Malone led the 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship team, and the club said he will “forever be remembered as a genuine icon and pillar of the most storied era in the history of Philadelphia 76ers basketball.”

That was Malone’s lone title, helping Julius Erving and the 76ers get to the top in his first season after arriving in a trade with Houston. He won his third MVP award that season and made his famed “Fo’, Fo’, Fo’,” prediction that the Sixers would win all their

playoff series in four-game sweeps.

He wasn’t far off: The Sixers lost just one game in that postseason before sweeping the Lakers in the NBA Finals, with Malone winning the finals MVP award after averaging 26 points in that postseason.

“No one person has ever conveyed more with so few words – including three of the most iconic in this city’s history,” 76ers CEO Scott O’Neil said. “His generosity, towering personality and incomparable sense of humor will truly be missed.”

Malone’s staggering statistics across 21 seasons and 1,455 professional games included 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. He holds NBA records for offensive rebounds in a career (6,731), season (587) and game (21).

Powerful on the court, he was helpful to both friends and foes off it.

“The man I called ‘Dad’ passed today,” Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said. “Words can’t explain my sadness. I will never know why a Hall of Famer took a fat, lazy kid from Auburn and treated him like a son and got him in shape and made him a player.

Kerry Simon, ‘Iron Chef’ winner, dies at age 60 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LAS VEGAS – Kerry Simon, a former “Iron Chef” champ who served up dishes to rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Mötley Crüe, has died.

S i m o n died Friday morning at a hospice facility in Las Vegas, according to his business Kerry Simon partner, Cory Harwell.

He was 60.

Simon was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, a degenerative neurological disorder, and died from complications related to the disease.

Harwell, who met Simon in 2009, said he did not let his disorder keep him from doing what he wanted to, which was open restaurants. Simon operated restaurants at several Las Vegas hotels.

MORRIS – Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity will be the recipients of First Midwest Bank’s Draw Down Fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m.

Model airplane from Arkansas town lands at Grundy County museum MORRIS – A model airplane, specifically a Ford Tri-motor model airplane built

by Ralph Yedinak in 1934 when he was 19 years old, is now home in Morris.

The plane traveled to Dayton, Ohio for show purposes and returned to Morris where it stayed for 18 years, according to a news release from the Grundy County Historical Society. It was rebuilt and repainted in 1978 when Ralph Yedinak retired to Cherokee Village, Arkansas. In 1984 he donated it to the School of the Ozarks (Ralph Foster Museum) in Point Lookout, Missouri since there was no museum in Grundy County at the time.

This year, his family decided to bring it back home to the Grundy County Historical Society Museum in Morris.

Foster Museum was coming near Morris for a family visit and dropped the plane off at its new home. The Museum is delighted to have added this plane to its exhibits, according to the release. Soon, it will be hung in a flying position from the ceiling to be enjoyed by all.

The plane has a wing spread of 39 inches and the fuselage is made from 4x4 white pine wood. It has a built-in cabin for passengers and a cabin for pilot and co-pilot. The motors are made from wood pegs glued to the motor frame, according to the release.

Yedinak was a part-time TV service man in Morris for 10 years. He worked for Diamond National Corp in Morris as a first-class machinist from 1967 to 1973. He also worked for Caterpillar Company as a plant security officer and as a fire service manager for five years. He retired in 1978.

MINOOKA – In today’s age of spread offenses and scores that look they came from basketball games rather than football games, the Minooka football team’s 46-0 win over Romeoville on Friday night had an old school feel.

The Indians run their offense almost exclusively from the shotgun formation and have players spread all across the field.

When all was said and done, the running game and defense were the main reasons for the Minooka win that gave them a 3-0 record for the first time since 2010.

The defense set the tone early when Blake Parzych stripped the ball from Romeoville’s Jordan Nettles on the first play from scrimmage and Indian teammate Kris Ledesma recovered.

It was the first of four turnovers forced by the Minooka defense.

On their first two drives, Minooka used Mike Malinowski to drive through the Romeoville line, and he scored the first Indian touchdown on a four-yard swing pass from John Carnagio.

Minooka’s defense moved Romeoville backward on its next drive and the Indians took over after a punt.

STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – Payton Hutchings was the dominant force Saturday as the Coal City Middle School baseball team won the Illinois Valley Conference championship with a 3-0 victory over Channahon.

Hutchings threw a 1-hitter with 14 strikeouts and just two walks. He also had three hits at the plate and scored all three runs. Teammate Jack Bunton added two hits, including a double.

In another game Saturday, Coal City came from behind to defeat Saratoga, 6-5, in eight innings as Jacob Formenti singled home Connor Best with the winning run. Best and Joey Youskevtch led the hitting, while Austin Pullara was the winning pitcher in relief. Cody Rogers made a diving catch in centerfield to save two runs.

nals, Minooka upended ReedCuster, 10-0, behind the pitching of Kyle Walter and Jacob Cook. Trevor Phelan had three hits for the Indians (11-1-1), while Joe Gould had two hits.

In the other semi, Channahon beat Coal City, 6-4, behind a complete game from Brendan Bisbee.

Simon gives Seneca offense a new weapon

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Senior running back Casey Pifer ended an interview at a Seneca preseason football practice with an unsolicited prediction about a teammate.

“Junior Hunter Simon – he’s gonna do big things for us this year,” Pifer said at the time.

Since Simon had a total of four varsity carries as a sophomore, Pifer did not envision those “big things” happening necessarily in a rushing role.

Pifer said then that he expected the majority of the carries

to go to himself and fellow senior Bryce Coyle. Simon was expected to be the team’s primary receiver and a contributor on defense.

It might be fair to say that nobody around the Irish saw Simon’s breakout game against Reed-Custer coming, at least not in the manner it unfolded.

He carried the ball only a few times in the first two weeks of the season, and coach Ted O’Boyle did not gameplan for that to dramatically change.

But Simon got a team-high 15 carries against the Comets, and he turned them into 162

yards and four touchdowns in a 41-20 Fighting Irish victory.

“They were loading up our offensive right side, trying to take Casey away from us,” O’Boyle said. “We put it on Hunter’s shoulders. Simon is not a total newcomer to carrying the ball.

Since he took up football in seventh grade, he says he has primarily been a running back and a receiver.

It was as a receiver that he made a major impact in Week 1, catching a 42-yard touchdown pass from Arik Applebee in what ended up being a 28-20 Irish loss at Dwight. Last week at Nokomis, Simon and most of his teammates took a back seat to Pifer, who scored all four of Seneca’s touchdowns in its 26-6 win. When opportunity knocked Friday, however, Simon was ready.

“Usually it was our other tailback (Pifer) – he’s a really good runner,” Simon said of

the role of feature back in the offense. “I was just helped out blocking tonight. I ran to the weak side most of the time, and it ended up working out – we kept doing it and doing it and doing it.”

O’Boyle said it is critical for the Irish running game to continue to have a third element if it is going to keep having success.

And actually on Friday, it had a fourth element, as Applebee gained 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground.

“I think we will leave other teams’ defenses unbalanced – they don’t know what they’re gonna see,” Simon said.

Win shows team is improving some

By RICK MORRISSEY rmorrissey@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The Bears led the Packers at halftime. If a Bears spokesman had taken the opportunity to announce to the Soldier Field crowd that, regretfully, the season was over, the only question would have been what route the parade was going to take.

The Bears looked like a professional football team Sunday, no small thing after last season’s debacle, though they still walked away 31-23 losers. There are no moral victories in the NFL, but there are losses that don’t stink to high heaven. This was one of them. It will be a long year, but maybe it won’t be the kidney stone many of us thought it would be.

John Fox made his debut as Bears coach, and it was clear from the start Sunday what his approach will be: Limit the number of opponents’ drives, try to keep the score close and who knows what can happen?

It worked for a half. The Packers had just three drives in the first two quarters (not counting the knee they took to end the half), Matt Forte had 105 of his 141 rushing yards and the Bears led 13-10.

Can this actually work for a talent-poor team? Only if the Bears play a perfect game.

They did not Sunday.

The plan seems to be to run Forte until he either sets an NFL rushing record or has to live out the rest of his years as a giant bruise. The plan seems to carry a condition: Don’t even think of running him near the goal line, with the game still very much in doubt.

The Bears gave up on Forte when it mattered most. It was if Marc Trestman had intercepted the radio signal and started calling plays. Trailing 24-16 in the fourth quarter, they attempted three pass plays from the 2-yard line, including one to Eddie Royal on fourth down that fell incomplete. Given that they had run Forte twice on third-and-3 and picked up first downs earlier in the game, the decision to pass was a head-scratcher.

True, Forte is generally not exceptional in short-yardage situations. But he had been good at it Sunday.

Asked whether running the ball might have been a better option on at least one of the goal-line plays, Fox said, “Hindsight is always 20-20.”

Listen, foresight was screaming, “run the ball!” And when the Bears weren’t lining up for a field goal on fourth down, foresight was being given CPR.

“The defense really set the tone for us,” Forsythe said.

“My hat’s off to the defensive coaches. They had a nice game plan and the kids did a real nice job of executing it.

“We still have some work to do, but it’s a good feeling to be 3-0 at this point of the season.”

At the bridge table, playing the right card can convert a negative score into a positive one.

When I watch less experienced players, they so often play the wrong card. Of course, if their partners are paying no attention, it doesn’t matter.

But for the next couple of weeks, let’s assume we would like to defeat more contracts.

How should East-West play to beat four spades after West leads the club ace?

In the bidding, North’s jump to four spades was an overbid because South might have had nothing. If North had bid only three spades, South probably would have passed, thinking that his diamonds were worthless, sitting under the opener.

Third hand’s job at trick one is to say whether he does or does not have the club queen, the card touching the two honors promised by partner’s lead.

If he has the queen (and no desire for a shift), he typically signals with the highest spot card he can afford. Here, though, he can do even better, playing the queen under partner’s ace. This shows the queen and the jack (or an extremely unlikely – and impossible here – singleton queen).

Now West should continue with a low club to give East the lead for the killing diamond shift.

When you cannot win the trick, (if possible) play the top of touching honors.

Patient-centered medical home becoming primary-care norm Dear Dr. K: I’ve been going to a family medicine practice for years. My doctor just told me the practice is going to become a “patient-centered medical home.” What does that mean? How is this going to affect my health care?

Dear Reader: Many family medicine practices across the country are switching to a team-based model of care called a patient-centered medical home (PCMH).

The PCMH turns a doctor’s practice into a physician-led team. This team will develop a long-term treatment plan for you that focuses on prevention.

Basically, the PCMH was born out of the realization that 21st-century medical care has become more complicated. There are more

The team makes sure that all pertinent information about your health is available to any health professional caring for you. It also makes sure you understand what the plan is for your care, and why.

To help you meet your goals, the team will educate you and coordinate care with other specialists if necessary. The team must

be available to you, at least by telephone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.

PCMHs took off in the late 2000s among family practice and internal medicine doctors. An important stimulus was Congress’ passage of the Affordable Care Act (called “Obamacare” by many).

Since then, thousands of doctors’ offices have made the switch.

If you’re taking a preventive approach to your care, you’ll stay healthier, which can save money and improve your quality of life.

And you’ll receive better treatment as well, with team members following up to find out if you’ve stuck with your medication regimen, gotten a scheduled screening

or kept an appointment with a specialist.

As your doctor’s office makes the switch, ask the following questions: • Who are the members of my care team?

• What are their roles?

• How will this change my access to care?

• How often will I have appointments?

• When will my team develop a care plan for me?

• Will the PCMH staff provide educational resources to help me better manage my own health care?

• Does the PCMH use a patient portal?

A patient portal is a computer-based connection between you and the doctor’s office. It enables you to look up your test results

and medical records, ask for prescription refills, and send questions to the nurses and doctors.

Several national accreditation programs provide certifications and keep track of a PCMH’s progress. These programs hold the PCMH to high standards.
