Prayer held for those lost in the Sept. 11 attacks

MORRIS – The brave men and women who ran into the burning World Trade Center towers the morning of Sept.

11, 2001, didn’t question the race, color, gender or religion of the people they were hoping to save from certain death.

This was the message Friday that Grundy County Coroner John Callahan gave at Living Water Church of the Nazarene, where the Grundy County portion of Cry Out America, a national day of prayer for those lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was held.

“On the news you see black lives matter, white lives matter, and so on,” Callahan said.

“All lives matter, folks. We are all the human race. We are all God’s children.”

The audience applauded and said amen, united as Americans, and remembered the citizens, first responders, military and their families who either lost their lives, were injured, or now live on without loved ones because of the horror wrought that day.

“The U.S. military has given their lives for my freedom,” Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

The attacks of Sept. 11 were a despicable act of war, Helland said. But he found great courage in Todd Beamer and the passengers of Flight 93, who overtook their plane from al-Qaeda terrorists.

Bound for Washington, D.C., the passengers, realizing the Boeing 757 they were on had been turned into a weapon, took control and crashed it in rural Pennsylvania, saving potentially thousands of lives.

“Let’s roll,” Helland recalled Beamer saying to other passengers as they started their attack. “I’ll never forget that.”

Officer Jim Sinovich of the Grundy County Honor Guard asked the audience if they noticed the American Flag at half-staff Friday.

If they didn’t, they could still notice it sometime the rest of the day, and remember the flag at half-staff is a sign of grieving and mourning.

“Nearly 3,000 men, women and children were lost,” Sinovich said. “Terrorists tried to destroy our freedom. They didn’t anticipate the selflessness individuals showed in representing our country.”

Pastor Rich Giovannetti of Standing in the Word Ministries said 14 years ago, terrorists brought us to our knees in prayer.

“But we stood our ground cause of who we are as a nation,” Giovannetti said. “We are one nation under God.” Pastor Tyler Carrell of the Park Street Congregational Church in Mazon, led a prayer for the military and National Guard, noting that they see things most can’t comprehend.

He spoke of David and Goliath in the battlefield and compared that battle to what the military encounters.

He said the evil, or “bad guys,” seem terrible and sometimes inescapable.
