Morris, which plays in the Pontiac Tournament on Saturday, grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the second set before Lockport took control. Julia Elsouso got the serve back with a kill, then Meredith Friscia served out eight straight points to give the Porters an 8-2 lead. The advantage reached 10-4 before Morris began to creep back in it.

The Redskins pulled to within 14-11 after Brehm got the serve back with a kill, and with Brehm serving, the two teams staged a long rally filled with diving saves, hustling recoveries and big attacks. In the end, Korte won the point with a block and put the momentum back on Morris’ side.

“You just had the feeling when that point was going on that whoever won it would have the edge,” Litwiller said.

“Our girls really stepped up.

Lockport was doing everything they could to take Kaylin away, and they did a good job of it. We had so many other girls step up.

“This match showed what teamwork is all about,” Litwiller said. “We have been working so hard to come together since we started practice with six players, and that showed itself tonight. We were one big Redskin tonight, and that’s what makes this team so th much fun to coach.”

MORRIS – Morris girls volleyball coach Jackie Litwiller went to high school and played volleyball at Lincoln-Way. She also coached in that district before coming to Morris. In all that time, since she was 14 years old, there was at least one thing she had never done.

Litwiller can cross that off her bucket list, as her Redskins defeated the Porters, 25-19, 25-23, on Thursday night in a match that highlighted both Morris junior Kaylin Korte’s talents and the Redskins’ ability to be more than a one-woman show.

Korte did lead Morris with 12 kills and 11 digs, but for much of the second set she was handled very well by the Lockport blockers. That forced the Redskins (7-2) to look for other options, and they found them.

Sophomore Janelle Brehm finished with seven kills, Amber Misek had nine digs, Taya Torkelson had 14 assists, Addison Polite had five assists and Emma Thomas had three aces.

When it was all said and done, it was a team victory.

“We tried to run different plays,” Torkelson said. “Kaylin was helping us out, but we were running everything we could think of. We knew they [Lockport] wanted to take her away, so we had to have other players step up, and everyone did.

“Our serves helped out a lot. We were real aggressive with our serves. I think this is the first time we have ever beaten Lockport, and I know it was the first time coach ‘Lit’ has. They were the best team we have played all year.”

Korte was dominant early, as she had nine kills in leading Morris to a 22-16 lead in the first set. Lockport (2-7) rallied to make it, 22-19, but Brehm got the serve back for Morris with a kill to make it 23-19 be-

Many tribes across this land would peel bark from trees for their homes, baskets, and yes, even clothing. A skilled bark stripper could separate the bark from the tree and yet not hurt it. It would heal and continue to grow. One narrator of a recent documentary I was watching on native cultures put it best by saying, “Everything is connected to everything.”

He was talking about the relationship that nature shares with all the plants, creatures, and the land.

For most hunters, this connection to nature is what drives us. It is what makes even the most mundane outings, the ones where no game is seen, more bearable. Sometimes those trips might even be the most enjoyable after a stressful day.

Yes, I do look forward to hunting season. I am so anxious to have the chance to pull my bow back. I look forward to hearing ducks circle above me.

I can’t wait to see wild turkeys grouped together preparing for winter. I also can’t wait for a few hours where the clock means nothing. The only acknowledgment of passing time is set by the sun as it traverses the sky above me and the squirrels sense dusk and scurry to their leafy beds.

I do hope that we have the good fortune as to enjoy a long and drawn out fall season. It seems that summer rests its weary head much to fast and the grasp of winter takes hold too soon. It is the fall that is so full of spectacular sights. It is a time of year that is often taken for granted. Do try, this autumn, to live for the moment and enjoy it.

The days are getting shorter. There is no doubt about that. The leaves are also starting to show slight hints of the brilliance they will soon reveal. All the signs are there that fall is creeping closer and with it come many new dreams and aspirations.

Each time I walk down my driveway and look at the lone deer stand, keeping watch like a sentinel, I long for some hours in its grasp. At this point, in my hunting life cycle it is not the giant buck that might walk past me that I yearn for, no, it is for the peace and quiet of sitting amongst the natural world.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have dreams of giant bucks just as much as the next guy, but, hunting is more than that now.

I would bet that many of you share the same feelings that I do.

I have seen lots of posts from friends on social media showing the gamut of fall hunts one might enjoy. Just today I saw pictures from a successful father and son outing as they participated in a dove hunt.

Another friend had a beautiful landscape showing calm waters and silhouettes of decoys, resting, waiting for their turn to call in the birds. Yet another boasted golden aspen trees and a lone elk bugling toward his future mate. All of these images share one thing, the opportunity to enjoy the peace that comes with being outdoors.

No matter what game you chase, the enjoyment of being in nature is all the same. It is a time for family and close friends to share a common bond. It’s a bond that rises above that of many other pursuits. We are not trying to tame nature, we are not in the process of bending it to our will, we are in fact trying to blend into it and become a part of its world.

I have always had a tremendous respect for native cultures that once claimed this land from coast-to-coast. They got it. They understood what it meant to be at one with your surroundings. I think that we can learn a lot from them, even today.

Meat safety at great risk The risks of living in today’s United States should not extend to eating meat purchased in supermarkets.

Yet staff shortages and other problems in the nation’s meat inspection system are understandably causing alarm among food safety advocates.

The system is in flux in anticipation of changes due to take place Oct. 24 in the poultry industry.

Those changes are worrisome: The U.S. Department of Agriculture will phase out 630 poultry inspector positions nationwide. The work will be taken over by employees of the processing plants.

The rationale, officials say, is that few problems are detected by eyeballing each chicken carcass. Plant employees can take over that role, and inspectors will be freed up to control salmonella and other harmful bacteria.

But meat processing workers already are under pressure to process animals more quickly. Safety rarely has been a priority for the industry, and there is little reason to believe that will change.

Meanwhile, the USDA is holding meat inspector positions open in poultry and red meat plants so that the employees currently inspecting chicken can be reassigned after the new rules take effect.

Gaps are being filled by temporary inspectors whose training is suspect. Federal auditors have warned that inspectors are overworked and at risk of making mistakes.

None of this is good news for consumers. Federal agencies must not wait until the next meat illness outbreak to shore up its inspection system.

‘Pay 2 Play’: Next move – Flip the board

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post Like the recent documentary “Citizen Koch,” “Pay 2 Play” aims to stir up outrage over influence peddling.

Although billionaire industrialists David and Charles Koch aren’t mentioned until midway through this film, they and their ilk – wealthy conservatives who push their agendas by pouring cash into the coffers of like-minded politicians – are clearly the villains here.

But director John Ennis is interested in doing more than getting people riled up. “How do we get past the pay-to-play system?” he asks in a voiceover narration. “Because I’m ready to be a board flipper.”

That reference is to the Monopoly game and tossing all the pieces on the floor when you’re losing. Ennis uses the Hasbro game and its cartoon mascot, the mustachioed Uncle Pennybags, as a leitmotif throughout the film. In his view, the spirit of Monopoly – the player with the most money wins – is emblematic of what’s wrong with government today.

The answer to Ennis’s question,

which he provides himself, is not just to get mad, but to get active. He advocates doing whatever one can to protest the status quo, whether it’s as an individual street artist or blogger or as part of a larger collective such as the Occupy movement. Ennis is an optimist at heart, and his belief that one person can make a difference is infectious, if naive.

That belief is echoed in the film by Surya Yalamanchili, a former contestant on the television show “The Apprentice” who ran for Congress in 2010 on a platform of election reform.

He lost, but still thinks that one person can change the world.

That’s refreshing to hear, especially when many other man-on-the-street interviews in the movie suggest that things have been so corrupt for so long that they will probably never change. Among the film’s famous talking heads, “Pay 2 Play” features interviews with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, linguist and leftist firebrand Noam Chomsky and former labor secretary Robert Reich, each of whom contributes a pungent soundbite or two.

At times, “Pay 2 Play” seems to lose focus, digressing about racism in campaigning – Yalamanchili’s Democrat primary opponent allegedly made fun of his name – and the scourge of gerrymandering. The film tends to ramble a little, spending what seems like an inordinate amount of time on Ohio politics as a case study for the nation.

“Pay 2 Play” makes no new revelations. It’s one of a bunch of documentaries of late that have tried to raise awareness about what they call the evils of the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which ushered in an age of unfettered corporate electioneering.

The difference with this movie is that it actually means to inspire hope.

Ennis, who has a young daughter, says he can’t very well drop everything and live in a tent encampment to protest. But what he can do – in fact, what he has done, with this film – is something else that matters.

• “Pay to Play” received two-and-ahalf stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains some coarse language.

It runs 87 minutes.

Too much weight gain in pregnancy is bad for mom and baby Dear Doctor K: I am pregnant, and my doctor says that I’m gaining too much weight. I trust the doctor, but I’ve heard that it’s normal to gain weight during pregnancy. How much weight should a woman gain?

Dear Reader: It’s natural for a woman’s appetite to increase during pregnancy. This is nature’s way of making sure that she eats enough for herself and her growing baby. All women should gain weight during pregnancy, while eating healthfully and sensibly.

But too much weight gain isn’t good for a woman or her baby.

A woman of average weight should gain between 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy.

Ideally, a woman should gain three to eight pounds in the first three months of pregnancy and three-quarters to one pound a week after that.

Most women of childbearing age who are moderately active require 2,000-2,200 calories a day before they get pregnant. They generally need only 300 additional calories per day after they become

If a woman is underweight when she becomes pregnant, her doctor may encourage her to gain as much as 40 pounds. A woman who is overweight when she becomes pregnant should aim to gain between 15 and 25 pounds.

A good way to get needed nutrition and calories without gaining too much weight is to eat healthy snacks during the day. Fruits and vegetables, and cheese or nuts (in limited amounts) are nutritious choices.

A newborn baby generally weighs between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds. So what accounts for the remainder of weight gain? The majority of additional weight goes toward an increase in blood and body fluids and an increase in the mother’s fat stores. In addition, extra weight comes from breast

enlargement, uterine weight gain, amniotic fluid and the placenta.

Babies born to obese women or those who gain too much weight during pregnancy are more likely to be born with problems such as neural tube defects.

This may be, in part, because obesity makes it more difficult to detect abnormalities during prenatal ultrasound tests.

Women who gain too much weight during pregnancy are also more likely to give birth to heavier babies. These babies are more likely to be obese as children and adolescents.

While the risks to the baby when the pregnant mother is obese are small, they are real. If you are early in your pregnancy, you’ve got plenty of time to make corrections to your diet.

Many addicts never recover Dr. Wallace: I know that addicts become extremely upset when they can’t get whatever they’re addicted to. What I would like to know is, what are some of the things people can be addicted to?

– Jessica, Providence, Rhode Island Dear Jessica: Besides the obvious and well-publicized addictive substances – drugs, alcohol and tobacco – the most common addictions involve food. Some food addicts eat too much and become obese. Then there are those who are addicted to certain foods such as chocolate, ice cream or soft drinks.

Paradoxically, you can also become addicted to NOT eating, or self-starvation; this is called anorexia.

Basically, an addiction is the compulsive, repeated use of a substance or engagement in an activity, despite adverse consequences.

You can become addicted to work, sleep, dieting, shopping or sex, and the list goes on and on.

You could put watching TV on the list, too.

Almost anything humans do can be overdone and used as an escape from reality – and hence, turned into an addiction.

Some addictions are so powerful that the addicts cannot overcome them without professional help.

Many addicts never do.

The sun’s ultraviolet rays are so potent, that they can penetrate the beach umbrella.

And remember that the sun is powerful and can cause skin damage even on a cloudy day.

If you follow all these precautions, your parents should feel confident you won’t get burned.

But be aware that even a suntan is harmful because there’s no truth in the saying that a person has a healthy tan!

The last four columns featured deals in which the declarers tried to maximize their chances of making their contracts. But sometimes a defender should take a page from those declarers’ books.

In this deal, East is defending against four hearts. West leads the club seven. East wins with his queen and cashes the club ace, West following with the two to show that he started with a doubleton. What should East do next?

After East opened one club, South had enough points to make a takeout double, planning to bid hearts on the next round to show his strong hand-type. But he feared that the opponents would carry the auction uncomfortably high in spades before he could mention his suit.

The defense looks so easy: Lead a third club. West will win the trick by ruffing, return a diamond to East’s ace for down one, and perhaps another club will effect a trump promotion. In this deal, though, that backfires badly.

Declarer wins the third trick in the dummy, draws trumps and claims.

Before getting greedy, East should cash his diamond ace.

Here, West signals with his seven to show the diamond king. East leads another diamond for down one. But if West discourages in diamonds, East returns to clubs, hoping that West has a heart higher than dummy’s seven.

Born September 17, 1952, in Morris, Brent Clifford was a son of the late Clifford Louis “Judge” and Dorothy (Enger-Watts) Davies.

He was a tremendous Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, who took great pleasure in watching the games. Brent will be remembered for his enjoyment of taking rides when the opportunity arose, and always being a truly happy guy.

Survivors include aunts and uncles, Herbert (RoseMarie) Enger and Leonard Bols both of Morris, and Barbara Pierce of Yorkville, as well as numerous cousins.

Brent was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Watts; and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., in Mazon Brookside Cemetery, where Brent will be laid to rest with his parents. Reverend Dr. Roy Backus will officiate.

(Teresa)Viland Jr. of Sandwich; one granddaughter, Tina Maria Kenney of Streator; two sisters, June Sanders of Placerville, CA and Patricia(Robert)Williamson of Morris; 5 step grandchildren, Bernie (Carol) Boeger of Newark, Tim Boeger of Alexandria, IN, Bruce Boeger of DeKalb, Diane (Wes) Scott of Yorkville and Donna Franklin of Sugar Grove; 10 step great-grandchildren; 5 step great- great-grandchildren.

It’s a question most people can answer.

“I was a freshman in high school,” Shawn Robertson with the National Guard said Thursday at the National Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony at Seneca Grade School. “It was keyboarding class, and it was playing nonstop on the televisions at school.”

Russell Tendall, a veteran with the American Legion in Seneca, said he was at home watching TV when he saw and heard what was happening.

For Seneca Grade School students, there are no memories of that day.

Most weren’t born yet, except for some of the eighth-graders, who were infants at the time.

In 2009, the U.S. Congress designated Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. According to nationalservice.gov, the day was launched in 2002 by the organization MyGoodDeed, with support from service organizations and “the 9/11 community.”

The day was organized to inspire charitable service as a tribute to victims and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York,

Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., that left nearly 3,000 people dead.

Seneca Grade School has hosted a ceremony to commemorate 9/11 since 2002, renaming it the National Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony after 2009.

The school invites current and past members of the military to the event, to offer thanks.

Prayers said on courthouse lawn to remember those lost in attacks

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Huddled under a blanket, Alfred and Elizabeth Franks sat on the courthouse lawn Thursday, cold but determined to say prayers for U.S. soldiers.

“As a nation, we need to get back to God,” said Alfred Franks. “Prayer is where it starts.”

The Franks were joined by other residents, elected officials, military personnel, pastors and veterans, all gathered at the courthouse for the second annual Cry Out America National Day of Prayer held in Morris.

The event is held in conjunction with 9/11, known as Patriot Day, to memorialize the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., that left nearly 3,000 dead, as well as to pray for the country.

Townships sue wind farm over roadway issues

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com KINSMAN – Highland Township Road Commissioner Mark Harlow can remember the days when driving down certain country roads would end with a black, tar-covered vehicle.

That was about three years ago, and the tar and chip roads near Highland and Vienna townships have not improved much since then, despite attempted repairs, Harlow said.

The pavement problems began after Blackstone Wind Farm put new chip seal on the

roads. The company agreed to help maintain a roughly 34mile network of roads on Oct. 13, 2009, when it signed road use and maintenance agreements with Vienna and Highland Townships.

Now, Highland and Vienna townships are embroiled in a lawsuit with the wind farm, alleging the company breached its contracts by not indemnifying the townships for costs associated with the road repairs, according to official court records.

Initially, Blackstone recognized the need for new roads.

The company attempted to fix the problem spots and provided vouchers to residents needing their cars cleaned, Belt said.

Those attempts to remedy the situation were made more than a year ago, but the tar issues persist, Harlow said.

“It’s gotten a little better now, with the colder temperatures, but it’s not fixed,” he said.

The lawsuit was filed in

February and is ongoing, Belt said.

Multiple calls made Thursday to Alison Dodson, Blackstone’s legal counsel for the case, and Bob Lenz, Blackstone attorney, were not immediately returned.

At the end of the day, Harlow said he’s most concerned with getting the roads back to normal so residents and local farmers can keep using them.

“These roads have been the biggest headache for us,” he said. “It’s just a pain for us, as the public, and I get tired of all of the complaints. I just want them done properly.”

Habitat for Humanity will hold informational meetings MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity will hold informational meetings next week for families interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner in Morris.

Meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Hospital in Whitman Room 1, 150 W. High St. in Morris and for 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Coal City Library, 85 N. Garfield St. in Coal City.

Volunteers will give a onehour presentation on the Habitat for Humanity program and application process, according to a news release from the organization. Attendance at one of the meetings is required to obtain an application.

To be chosen for a home, families must meet a minimum of three criteria: 1) Need for a permanent home, such as living with a family member or renting a crowded or unsafe apartment; 2) Ability to pay a no-interest mortgage, earning 30 to 60

percent of the median income for Grundy County; 3) Willingness to partner in the construction of their home by contributing 400 hours of “sweat equity” to Habitat.

“We are excited to be able to continue to build affordable housing for area families,” Sarah Peterson, executive director for the Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, said in a news release. “We are currently building our 11th home and are looking forward to selecting families for houses 12 and 13.”

Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1996 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The organization is a nonprofit, Christian housing organization which seeks to eliminate poverty housing by providing simple, decent homes for low-income families. MORRIS – It’s not uncommon to hear horns blaring in traffic, but on Thursday, the horns were sounding to honor U.S. troops.

“We committed our military to battling this foe, and the cost was paid in lives,” he said.

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan also spoke, noting the personal significance of the day. He volunteered at ground zero in New York after the attacks.

“They arrive on the scene first and foremost, so many, many times, and without hesitation they begin their work.

Robertson has been to several of the school’s events and said it helps to see community support. The event also leads him to reflect.

“The kids who are in school now haven’t lived without a war,” Robertson said. “That’s an interesting concept.”

The event started with a freedom walk, with students from the North and South Campuses gathering in the South Campus parking lot for a presentation of flags by the American Legion, Seneca FFA and students with the Seneca Legion Auxiliary.

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Fans and racers alike turned out to ogle cars, scarf munchies and generally soak in everything NASCAR at Race Fan Rally on Thursday evening in downtown Joliet.

Zachary Tinkle, 12, of Park Ridge already is planning for a future in racing.

Standing near his Super Cups racer – a 50 percent scale copy of a NASCAR stock car – Tinkle handed out autographed racing cards with his picture to the curious.

The cars, with completely enclosed bodies and roll bars, are capable of hitting speeds of more than 100 mph on the right track. Locally, at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, they typically reach speeds of about 70 mph, said Tinkle’s father, Brad.

“I like going fast, and these go pretty fast,” the younger Tinkle said.

Adam Taylor, 25, of Shorewood was at the rally to show off his midget racer, another car series that races at Grundy County Speedway.

Taylor, who has been racing for the last 18 years, said he recently switched from go-karts to the larger midgets because they’re considerably cheaper to operate.

Taylor said he spent about $25,000 last year competing in seven go-kart races. Most of the cost was for tires – he said he sometimes burned through five sets per weekend at about $250 a set – and engines, which have to

rebuilt after running for four or five hours.

Taylor said the midget racer, on the other hand, was a relative bargain at an operating cost of about $3,000 per season.

Open-wheel racing is a lot different than stock cars, Taylor noted.

“You have to be a lot more careful,” Taylor said. “You wheel-hop somebody, and you could be on your top in seconds.”

Veteran drag racer John Lawson of Joliet turned out for the rally to display his funny car and watch the Haulers Parade.

“Any kind of racing I like,” Lawson said. “As long as someone is doing something with a car, a bike, a boat, whatever, just as long as they’re racing.”

Lawson said he once tried his hand at circle track racing.

“I always forgot the turns so that’s why I got back into drag racing,” Lawson said.

Several hundred fans turned out for the rally, though the cool temperatures in the mid-50s may have hurt attendance a bit.

Lockport fan Gary Drejas noted that the cool weather should make for better racing.

“Horsepower is going to be up, and grip is going to be up,” Drejas said. “It should make for a real good race this year with some good passing.”

Racing kicks off Friday night with the Lucas Oil 250, followed by the Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast 300 on Saturday and the main race, the MyAFibStory. com 400 on Sunday at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.
