Trophy will appear at fitness centers, Wilmington school

On Oct. 3, the hockey championship trophy will make an appearance in Morris and Wilmington. It will then appear Oct. 25 in Diamond.

The MDDP appreciates retailers’ concerns, she said, and acknowledged some might see the decision as good news.

Karen Ortiz, a Gus Macker committee member who has a husband, daughter, son and grandson who have played in the tournament, said she is disappointed and surprised by the news.

“It’s such a positive thing, for kids to people over 50 like my husband,” Ortiz said.

The MDDP is in the early stages of discussing how to expand or tweak the Liberty Arts Festival and Liberty 5K Run/Walk. As of now, Applegate said there isn’t anything planned to replace Gus Macker.

MORRIS – After 13 years, the Morris Downtown Development Partnership has decided not to host the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament next year.

MDDP Executive Director Julie Applegate said Thursday the MDDP board felt it was best to focus on expanding upon the success of the Liberty 5K Run/Walk and the Liberty Arts Festival. Applegate said both events appeal to a broader audience.

“Gus Macker is a great event,” Applegate said. “But we felt it’d be best to focus on events with the most potential.”

The tournament, Applegate said, appeals mostly to athletes.

She said Liberty Arts, which will see a few minor tweaks, attracts every age group. The Liberty 5K Run/Walk has been set apart from other 5Ks in the area, she said, because of its dedication to honoring veterans and patriotism.

Applegate said Gus Macker should be remembered as a great, family-friendly event that brought many people to Morris who otherwise wouldn’t have come, and because of it, continue to return.

She thanked participants, residents, sponsors and donors.

“It will be missed,” Applegate said. “I’ll be the first to say that.”

She said she hopes another local organization, perhaps a larger one with more volunteer help, can take over and keep Gus Macker alive in Morris.

Condo plan approved by Morris committee

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A third condominium building might soon be built in the Heritage Estates Subdivision along Newman Drive near White Oak Elementary School.

Steve Wilson presented plans as a reminder to the Morris Development Review Committee Thursday morning.

When over a year has passed since approval, developers are required to make a presentation to the committee, Morris Building and Zoning officer Bill Cheshareck said. Wilson said the project, which has a buildout of four buildings, was halted by economic problems.

“Now, the phones are ringing,” Wilson said. “We want to put another one up.”

The third building and garage will be the same as ex-

isting ones. There are eight units in each building, with each unit consisting of 1,100 square feet for two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The outer walls are brick. Wilson said it’s turned out to be a nice and quiet development.

“These are top-notch,” Cheshareck said after the meeting. “They do great work.”

The plans were approved unanimously. Wilson said he’s looking to get the unfinished road near the property finished before winter comes.

In other news, Michael Kinzler presented plans for a U-Store-It storage facility at the corner of Adam and Wauponsee streets. The building is the former Beatty Lumber Yard, which Kinzler and his brother, Tom, have been converting to storage units.

The Kinzlers are hoping to

begin renting to customers by Nov. 1. No fencing surrounds the building at present.

“We want it to be visible,” Michael Kinzler said. “We want it to be seen.”

They’ll be making some additions outside to beautify the property a bit, Kinzler said, but they don’t plan to add shrubs or bushes because of the upkeep and the garbage that collects around the plants.

But Kinzler said he can’t wait to get a security camera on the building, which had its plan approved by the committee and will feature more than 50 storage units.

3 French Hens market Saturday to feature fall decor New vendors also to attend the monthly outdoor event in downtown Morris MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Fall is in the air, and the 3 French Hens French Country Market will be the place to shop this weekend for all your fall decor.

Held on the banks of the historic I&M Canal, 123 W. Illinois Ave., Morris, the venue runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of each month, May through October.

This month’s market is Saturday, according to a news release.

With 130-plus vendors, there is something for everyone, including antiques, upcycled items, produce and perennials, fresh baked goods,

artisans and one of a kind handcrafted wares, according to the release.

Glory Gardens will be bringing mums from its Amish gardens in Shipshewana.

There might be some early picked pumpkins, gourds and broom corn. Minjon Rose will be on hand with its handcrafted wheat sheafs and wreaths.

Produce will be in abundance with the fall harvest, and Hens organizers remind everyone to bring a market tote for easy carrying.

This market won’t be an event to miss, with several new vendors joining seasoned veterans.

Boehm Photography, is excited to offer original photos, both framed and unframed, according to the release.

“We changed the show up a little bit. It used to be on Saturday and Sunday, but now it’s Friday night and Saturday,” Bernie Myers, the event organizer, said.

The event starts at 5 p.m.

Friday and gears up again at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, 8890 Route 47 in Morris.

“We get a great increase in crowds every year on Saturday, a 15 to 25 percent [increase] some years, and last year we had the jump up on people again, but then Sunday is just a dud,” Myers said.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Katie and Ryan Newell are icons in their Morris home, thanks to John Kettman of LaSalle, who is engaged to Katie’s mother, Maryann Wisniewski of LaSalle.

Kettman immortalized the Newells in a tribute painting with Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” as the inspiration.

The painting was Kettman’s wedding present to the couple, who were married Aug. 29 at Ellis House and Equestrian Center in Minooka.

“When we opened it, we were so surprised,” Katie said.

In addition to recreating Katie and Ryan’s likenesses, Kettman personalized the painting by including various details that are important to them. For instance, their two dogs – Tillie and Casey – are featured, as well as their cat, Chevy. The house design down to the bay windows is based on the Newell home, and the roof is inscribed with dates that are significant to them, Kettman said. The painting also commemorates Katie and Ryan as volunteer firefighters for the Lisbon Seward Volunteer Fire Department, Katie said.

Katie’s birthday is added to her dress, Ryan’s birth date is inscribed in the pitchfork and some of the messages are well-hidden, Katie said.

Ever since Kettman began painting in 2008, he has experimented with a variety of means to express his creativity, working mostly in acrylics.

He also has done an image of Streator native Clyde W. Tombaugh – who discovered Pluto. Kettman is collecting signatures on a petition, in the hopes the U.S. Postal Service will issue it as a postage stamp.

Arborists take to national cemeteries 9

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Local arborists and horticulturalists will spruce up Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery next week as part of a volunteer project at the nation’s veterans cemeteries.

Arborists at 27 national cemeteries will provide tree care in the debut of Saluting Branches: Arborists United for Veteran Remembrance.

The focus at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be removing dead trees and planting new ones, said Jim Teiber, the Joliet city arborist and site leader at the Elwood cemetery.

Teiber said he was impressed with the response to the program. Nurseries are donating trees and two companies are providing tree removal services. About 15 to 20 trees will be planted at the cemetery.

There has been high enthusiasm for the project on a national scale according to Julie Gann, a spokeswoman for Saluting Branches.

“The response has been overwhelming,” she said.

About 1,000 volunteers are participating at 27 national cemeteries, Gann said.

Projects vary by cemeteries, and work includes pruning and tree care as well as tree removal and planting, she said.

The program was organized by Rainbow Treecare in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Gann said the company saw the need for the tree services three years ago after doing volunteer work at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

DAYTON, Ohio – A founding member of the retro-rock/ doo-wop group Sha Na Na, who later became a movie studio executive and law professor, has died. Dennis Greene was 66.

Greene’s nephew, Edward Robinson, said his uncle died Saturday in Columbus after a brief illness.

Greene performed with Sha Na Na at Woodstock in 1969 and with the group in the 1978

movie “Grease.”

Robinson said Thursday the New York City native left the group in 1984 to study law and later worked as a Columbia Pictures vice president. He said Greene appreciated opportunities from his music career, but law was his passion.

Greene began teaching law at the University of Dayton in 2001.

Funeral services set for Sept. 19 at Church of the Immaculate Conception in New York City will be public.

Former AP reporter Shaw dies; broke Nixon resignation news

By KEN MILLER The Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY – Former Associated Press reporter Gaylord Shaw, who broke the news that President Richard Nixon would resign as evidence in the Watergate case mounted around him, has died. He was 73.

Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan, Oklahoma, said Wednesday that Shaw died Sunday at his home. A cause of death was not released.

While working in the AP’s White House bureau, Shaw covered the fall of one president and the rise of another, President Gerald Ford, who later pardoned Nixon.

“Gaylord and I worked that story together, and then he worked the bulletin that went on the wire, and that was a pretty major one,” Walter Mears, former bureau chief for the AP’s Washington bureau and a longtime friend and colleague of Shaw’s, recalled from his home in North Carolina. “It was great that the AP had a guy you could rely on to deliver everything there was to deliver on a story like that.”

Shaw later worked for the Los Angeles Times, where he won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 1978, and for Newsday, where he shared a Pulitzer for spot reporting in 1997. He returned to his native Oklahoma after his retirement.

Lou Boccardi, a former AP president, said Shaw had “a slow smile that got wider as he spun out details of a good story he was working on. He lived his work.”

Boccardi called Shaw “a straight arrow in the sense of keeping his eye on the center of a story.”

Shaw was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, and began his newspaper career as a 13-yearold sports reporter for the El Reno American. He later worked for the Lawton Constitution before joining AP’s Oklahoma City bureau at age 20.

‘Young Dr. Malone’ actor John Connell dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Actor and decorated World War II veteran John P. Connell has died at the age of 91.

Connell, who was best known for starring in the live soap opera “Young John P. Dr. Malone,” Connell passed away Thursday in Woodland Hills, California, according to the SAG-AFTRA union.

After serving in the war as a radio operator and waist gunner, he turned to acting.

Over the course of his career, the Philadelphia native performed on Broadway, on television and in films including “Three Days of the Condor.”

He also did promotional voice work on the radio and television for companies like American Airlines and Ford.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, a son, daughter and a grand daughter.

OPINION All lives matter, are valuable All lives are valuable, whether young or old, men or women, regardless of race, faith or economic status.

Each member of every community in the nation is entitled to the “unalienable Rights” listed in the Declaration of Independence: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The fact that “life” is listed first is no accident – the benefits of living in a free country cannot be enjoyed without life.

It is this life that has so tragically been taken away recently from a number of citizens whose calling in life is to protect the lives of others.

Law enforcement officers are our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, grandparents, friends, and co-workers.

We are part of our communities. Many of us were born and raised in or near where we now serve the public.

We care about our communities.

We have sworn to protect and serve the people in those communities.

It is a difficult and dangerous time to be a police officer.

Law enforcement officers put on their uniforms and go to work to protect their communities in a state of hyper-vigilance.

We are highly trained and are often called upon to make split-second decisions of life or death.

The vast majority of the time we get it right. However, when a life, any life,

OUR VIEW

We must never forget 9/11 Fourteen years ago, the horror and tragedy of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil unfolded before our eyes on TV. Four passenger airliners were hijacked by members of al-Qaida with the intent of flying them into buildings.

Three of them reached their target – the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.

A fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to subdue the hijackers.

The towers crumbled to the ground. Nearly 3,000

people were killed.

Our nation was stunned, but our resiliency rose to the top. The nation came together as one to mourn, to reflect and to stand up to terrorists. We were united.

Fast forward 14 years, and those feelings of unity and a nation standing together as one are long gone. We’re not sure where along the way those feelings regressed.

Look at our country now. Divided by partisan politics. Divided by ideology. Divided by racism and intolerance.

As each year passes, the memories fade a little more.

Never forget becomes harder to remember.

We should never forget.

Thankfully, there are other people and organizations in our area who feel the same way.

There are events planned in throughout our communities and we encourage you to attend, and to remember.

As you go about your Friday, it likely will feel like any other Friday before the weekend starts.

Take a moment to remember those who lost their lives in the deadly Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

When you do, also take the time to think about how united we were as a county and what you can do to get us closer to unity and further from divisiveness.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Morris swimmers cruise past Joliet

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Despite having several first-year high school girls on the swim team and having to coordinate schedules with girls from four different schools, Morris girls swimming coach Andrew Porth is encouraged about what he has seen so far this season. Particularly Thursday night.

The Redskins picked up a decisive 124-52 win over Joliet Township on Thursday, adding to a double win over Ottawa and Pontiac earlier this week.

“This was a real good meet for us,” Porth said. “I was very pleased with the effort tonight.

We have a lot of great girls that are not only great swimmers, but great people.”

Morris, which also features swimmers from Minooka, Coal City and Seneca high schools, had a big night all around.

The Redskins started the night with a win in the 200-meter freestyle relay, as Elizabeth Smith, Alex Kaste, Jen Ashley and Reilly Chytracek finished with a time of 2:23.54.

Chytracek followed that up with a win in the 200 freestyle in 2:38.66 before Ashley and Smith battled to the end of the 200 individual medley.

Ashley pulled away in the final leg, the freestyle, and won with a time of 2:24.21, ahead of Smith’s 2:35.83.

Kaste won the 50 freestyle in 30.24 before Carmen Terry won the diving competition with a score of 141.25.

Ashley picked up her second win of the night by taking the 100 butterfly in 1:18.99 before Smith won the 100 freestyle in 1:09.07, ahead of teammate Katelyn Moore’s second-place time of 1:15.50.

Chytracek won the 400 freestyle in 5:13.98 to earn her second win. In the 200 freestyle relay, Andrea Wydeveld, Morgan Abraham, Erin Sweet and Moore finished second in 2:04.85 before Anna Bowman (1:30.68), Sweet (1:32.52) and Jackie Martinez (1:55.71) went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke.

We have a lot of first-year swimmers and it’s been fun to see them step up and compete.”

STAFF REPORTS LOCKPORT – Several days ago, the Morris girls volleyball team did not perform at its best in a loss to LaSalle-Peru.

On Thursday night, however, the Redskins got their groove back and defeated Lockport, 25-18, 25-22.

Kaylin Korte led the Redskins (4-6) with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Janelle Brehm had five kills, three aces and two digs. Ashley Hood had 10 assists and six digs, with Addison Polite adding nine assists and three digs. Veronica Johnson had two kills and seven blocks.

“The girls played with a lot of energy and hustle tonight,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said.

Morris lost the sophomores match, 24-26, 25-23, 22-25, while the freshman A team lost, 27-25,

25-20, and the B team fell, 25-14, 25-22.

BASEBALL

(8-5, 2-0) to the Southwest Prairie Conference win with 13 kills, seven digs and two aces, while Ginger Perinar had five kills and seven digs. Brooklyn Bachmann had 17 assists.

Martinez has his eye on fall, not the Phillies

But as the Cubs prepared to open a four-game series in Philadelphia on Thursday, Martinez also got another reminder of just how big November might be for him – as the latest chapter in the Phillies’ ongoing management shakeup continued.

Former Cubs executive Andy MacPhail, the recently hired Phillies president, fired longtime general manager Ruben Amaro and installed assistant Scott Proefrock as assistant GM. The Phillies already were operating with an interim manager, one-time Cubs candidate Pete Mackanin – in a position that figures to be one of five to eight managerial openings during the off-season.

Martinez, 50, wonders – and

manager Joe Maddon hopes – this will be the year Maddon’s right-hand man goes from perennial finalist to first-year big-league manager.

“You never know,” said Martinez, who interviewed for the Cubs job Rick Renteria got before last season, was interviewed for the Tampa Bay job Maddon vacated last fall, and also has been a finalist in recent years for jobs in Houston and Washington.

“For me, there’s no question that I’m ready. It’s just getting the right opportunity,” said Martinez, whose 16-year career as a big-league player began as a third-round draft pick of the Cubs and included three seasons in Tampa Bay when Proefrock worked in the Rays front office.

As a rising managerial candidate since he helped put Maddon’s Tampa Bay teams on the baseball map, it was almost inevitable from the first day back in Chicago.

Fall brings many fishing challenges By the swarm of magazines and catalogs I’m getting you would think the fall season has fully enveloped us and winter is right around the corner.

Pictures of vast woodlands ablaze with multiple colors and hunters holding big deer are all over these publications. But what does this mean for the avid angler?

Tough question.

It’s important to remember for the fisherman hitting the lake, that our scaly pals base their world off water temperature and amount of daylight.

Flipping the calendar page is unique to mankind and many times we change our fishing techniques and methods too early.

I have spent lots of time on Table Rock Lake. This famous fishery is notorious for holding on to late summer patterns well into the fall months.

In fact, anglers in November can still be found fishing the tops of submerged cedars that are fifty feet under the water.

When we think of fall fishing, we create images in our mind of hungry predators chasing vast schools of baitfish into shallow coves and creeks and attacking them with a vengeance.

Yes, this does happen, but not always when we want it to.

For me personally, I like to use traditional fall fishing methods once the water temperature is consistently in that 60 to 65 degree range.

Many lakes in our area topped out this year at a surface temperature around

80 degrees. That is nearly a 20-degree drop before typical fall conditions.

I was unable to make it onto the water this last week, but with the hot weather we have had, I’m sure the temperature is not anywhere close to falling.

This means that even though it is getting close to mid-September, most summer patterns are what the fish are holding in.

In our area I find that most lakes reach the lower sixty degree water temperature towards the mid to end of October.

So now what?

As I mentioned earlier, the majority of the foraging in the fall will be on baitfish.

Many times your typical predatory fish, such as bass, walleye and pike, will venture away from traditional structure they may use earlier in the year and follow schools of bait.

I have seen and participated in amazing fall days where the only thing we did was follow balls of bait on our electronics and ignore everything else.

We caught fish in some of the most open and exposed places because of this. When the feedbag was on, the only thing the gamefish related to was where that giant ball of shad was located.

In many of the local lakes that are lacking a population of schooling shad, the bluegills become the primary forage.

These sunfish will still hang out in the typical places, but they often will be bunched up in greater numbers. I’ve watched nearly

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers 100 bluegills of all sizes swim around and under my dock in the fall. The bigger fish will be nearby. If they are not actively feeding on them, odds are they are hanging just out of sight below their prey in deeper water.

If you are lucky enough to fish a more traditional impoundment like Kentucky Lake, or many other reservoirs, then check those feeder creeks.

Follow them back until you find where the shad are hanging out. Once you have located them, you can apply that knowledge to other parts of the lake. Any lure that mimics a baitfish will be a great choice.

You will hear many seasoned anglers talk about how fall fishing is either feast or famine. That is often the case. But when you locate the forage, your odds of having a stellar day vastly increases.

Keep watching those water temperatures and look forward to the cool days ahead.

At the bridge table, if you know you will lose a trick in a suit, should you lose it early or later?

In this deal, for example, what should happen in hearts? Would you prefer to declare in or defend against three no-trump after West has led the heart nine?

In the auction, South was right to respond one no-trump, not two diamonds. If game were possible, it was so much more likely to be in three no-trump than in five diamonds. And if the latter were best, North would run from no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, two hearts (given that East has the king-queen) and three clubs. He must play on diamonds to establish a winner there. However, this requires losing the lead twice, and the risk is that East will establish and run his heart suit first.

The key play comes at trick one.

If East puts up his heart queen, South ducks, takes the second heart trick, and plays a diamond. West will win but not have another heart to play.

East must remember to give declarer his heart tricks as quickly as possible. At trick one, East encourages with the heart seven. South wins with his jack and plays a diamond, but West takes the trick and leads his second heart.

This establishes East’s suit while East still has the diamond ace as an entry. The contract is down one instead of plus one.

PUBLIC NOTICE REQUEST FOR BIDS DWIGHT TOWNSHIP Dwight Township is seeking bids for a contractor to perform and manage the remodeling of various portions of its historic township hall, located at 201 North Franklin Street, Dwight, Illinois. Specifically, the remodeling will consist of repairs deemed necessary to the hall's steeple, gutters, downspouts, and flashing (collectively, the "Project'").
