“I think that the offensive and defensive lines will decide this game,” Thorson said.

“Especially when you get two teams like this that don’t know each other very well. It will come down to the basics, who can block and who can tackle.

“Our line on both sides of the ball has been doing a very good job, so I feel pretty good about that coming into this game. One thing our defense needs to do is build off the way we played against Metamora, especially in the second half.

We saw a lot of good things and we want those to continue.”

The offense has provided just enough for the Redskins, but there are areas Thorson knows his team can improve.

Most notably, the area inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

“We definitely need to get better in the red zone,” he said.

“That’s really been the biggest thing on offense in the first two games. We have been able to move the ball, but once we get inside the 20, we have had mistakes like penalties, missed

If we want to get to 2-1 and feel better about our season, we are going to have to take it to them from the start. I think our kids are ready to do that.”

MORRIS – It’s difficult to say that a game in Week 3 of a football season is a must-win, but Morris coach Alan Thorson is almost to that point concerning the Redskins’ game against Class 8A Dundee-Crown on Friday night at home.

The Redskins are coming off of a big win last Friday, rallying from behind to beat Metamora, 12-8, and improve to 1-1.

Even more than the playoff implications that a win would bring, Thorson sees it as something more important.

“We need to get some of our Redskin swagger back,” Thorson said. “This is a big game for us. We want to win two in a row, we want to win on our home field. This [DundeeCrown] is a good (Class) 8A football team, and we can’t let anything slide before we start our conference schedule.”

Morris is coming off a pair of tight games, losing 28-21 to Minooka and beating Metamora. At the time, Metamora was ranked No. 8 in Class 5A. Currently, Morris sits at No. 11 in 5A after the win over the Redbirds. Dundee-Crown, meanwhile, also has played a pair of tight games, albeit both against winless teams. The Chargers beat Elgin, 36-22, in the season opener before edging Streamwood, 41-39, last week in a game that saw them rally from a 21-7 deficit.

“They are athletic,” Thorson said. “We are definitely concerned about that. They have some very good running backs. No. 10 (senior Malik Dunner) is going to Ball State.

No. 6 (Caleb Parson) ran a lot last week and is a good, physical back, and No. 34 (Brooks Brandon) is also their middle linebacker, but he is a tough runner, too.

“They aren’t just a running team, though. They have also thrown the ball on play-action quite a bit that we’ve seen on film. They have one real good receiver, No. 1 (Kiwaun Seals).”

Still, with all the athletes Dundee-Crown brings to the table, Thorson said his own athletes will be able to match them. Where the game will be

JOLIET – Kevin Harvick is sixth in the Sprint Cup standings – but in reality, the precise placing doesn’t matter.

That’s because Harvick won the second race of the season at Phoenix and thus qualified for the new Chase to the Sprint Cup playoff format, which starts this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

Basically, it’s “win and you’re in,” and Harvick accomplished that right after the Daytona 500. A second win in the Southern 500 at Darlington boosted his standing in case tiebreakers came into play.

But Harvick, a 14-year veteran who has seen NASCAR go from a straight start-to-finish season to one with a playoff, said neither the restructuring from an all-points qualifying system nor the new format used within the Chase itself has changed his race-to-race outlook.

“A lot of people make a lot of what the point system is, and who’s got the most wins and how you race,” Harvick, a two-time winner at Chicagoland, said during a lull in a recent test at the track. “You don’t race any different under any point system or any circumstance whatsoever. You go out and run the car as fast as you can run it.

“You show up for the weekend, and your first goal is to win. You’re not going to win all the races, so you make the best situation that you can out of that particular weekend.

Whatever the system is, you’re going to race the same way.”

Through last season, the Chase included the top 12 drivers in the standings after the Richmond race. This year, it includes 16 drivers, including

the approach from the race teams is going to be exactly the same.”

What is uncharted territory to him is how the new format will play out.

“To the competitors, it looks great on paper,” Harvick said. “But we haven’t been through it yet.”

A win in the first segment advances a driver to the second segment. If three different drivers win, the nine other highest-ranked drivers move on to the next round.

One thing Harvick has is a leg up when it comes to Chicagoland. He won the first two races at the track, back when they were called the Tropicana 400. Through various title sponsors, he’s finished fourth or better in seven of the 13 races.

“For whatever reason, it’s been my driving style, and the last few years, the groove has just spread out,” Harvick said.

“I just enjoy coming to this particular race track. The results have been good, and that helps your attitude.”

Look quickly, Mr. McCarthy, because your boss is about to be out of a job.

I know Roger Goodell, barely as well as some members of the media, but better than most. There are two huge disconnects in this story for me.

The commissioner never has struck me as dishonest, and until a few hours ago, I never would have believed he would look me in the eye, or look all of America directly in its network TV camera lens, and lie.

Admittedly, most of my one-on-one contact with him is a few years in the rear view mirror, and he has grown more arrogant and dismissive in the glow of his 2011 collective bargaining agreement defeat of the

You can argue the $40 million plus he earned last year alone could change a guy.

But there is absolutely no evidence Goodell is this kind of bold-faced liar.

Nonetheless, let’s assume for the moment he could have changed that much for the worse.

My second concern is the one I just can’t move past.

How dumb would Goodell have to be to have gone out of his way to knowingly position himself for this kind of disaster if he had in fact possessed and viewed the tape?

Something is amok here, as there is absolutely no evidence anywhere Goodell could be this

dumb.

He is one of the best I’ve ever met at looking you in the eye and avoiding or ignoring your question if there’s any chance the answer could put him in a position from which he could not maneuver in any direction he would like.

I honestly believe this kind of stupidity is beyond Goodell’s reach.

So where does that leave us?

The AP didn’t make this up. There is a source, and I say with complete confidence it’s a well-vetted one. He or she could be lying, but that’s highly unlikely, too.

The AP didn’t go with this story without hearing the alleged confirmation voice mail.

An elaborate hoax is possible, but almost as unlikely as Goodell being this dumb.

It is more likely the NFL employee who received the video failed to move it to the

appropriate recipients.

Another highly unlikely scenario, I admit, but actually more plausible than any of the other long shots we’re dealing with.

Finally, there is what should be our greatest fear, that absolute power does in fact corrupt.

Less than 24 hours ago, Goodell was the most powerful man in all of sports, and now he’s dangling from the ledge of the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower by his fingernails.

I actually haven’t been a fan of Goodell’s since his thrashing of the players three years ago, but I really hope I’m right and he couldn’t have told this lie.

If he did, we might never be able to trust the game again.

Whatever NFL commissioner Roger Goodell might have stepped in, it’s getting harder and harder by the moment for him to get it off his shoes.

What we have, as of now, is an Associated Press report of a New Jersey state law enforcement official who claims to have sent video of Ray Rice cold-cocking his then-fiancée in the elevator of the Revel hotel, and also a voice mail from an NFL employee confirming receipt of the video and commenting, “You’re right, it’s terrible.”

The report comes less than 24 hours after Goodell elected to go on network TV and tell the world he never had seen that video and that “to his knowledge,” no one in his office had.

In response to the latest AP revelations, we have a statement from NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy in which he said, “We have no knowledge of

We remember The 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States is today.

It’s been a long time. In other ways, it seems like just yesterday since we watched on live TV as the World Trade Center’s twin towers fell, since we saw the damage at the Pentagon and the crater in the middle of a Pennsylvania field, a horrifying symbol of the sacrifice those on board made for the safety of strangers.

For many, the horror of the day is ingrained in the memory, much like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was etched in the minds of a previous generation.

We are reminded of President George W. Bush’s warning when he addressed the nation after Sept.

11 that the war against terrorism would be long and not like other wars. It has seemed at times that many people did not take the warning to heart, as 9/11 became more distant and the risks were shouldered by young people who volunteered to serve overseas in the nation’s fight against terrorism.

But the growing threat from ISIS, a terrorist group that, like al-Qaeda in 2001, is sheltered by a foreign country while developing a power base that poses a serious risk to the United States, makes 9/11 very immediate again for all of us. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll finds that nearly half of Americans believe the nation is less safe now than before Sept. 11, 2001.

As contentious as domestic politics have been for the last 13 years, the United States government should get credit for keeping large-scale terrorist attacks off our nation’s shores. This has been done with discord at times, along with questions of whether our rights and liberties have been preserved. But such issues always arise during times of war.

And we must not forget that even though the attacks of 9/11 have not been repeated, we remain at war. Young men and women from across the country continue to put their lives at risk to preserve the security and freedom of the United States.

The ongoing nature of this war was obvious as President Barack Obama addressed the nation Wednesday night to talk to Americans about how the government would fight ISIS – a reminder of President Bush’s statement to the nation 13 years ago.

We know there are thousands who think daily of the war on terror – those who loved and cherished one or more of the nearly 3,000 souls who perished on 9/11, or one of the more than 6,800 military members who have died in the war on terror since 2001.

But even those who do not have a hole in their heart due to a lost loved one should take time today to reflect on what has been lost during the past 13 years. It wasn’t just steel that fell that day; part of our collective innocence did, too.

We remember.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Beacons in the darkness of the world While a prisoner of Islamic terrorists, Steven Sotloff faked illness so that he could observe Yom Kippur. It is said that he would also covertly pray facing Jerusalem.

As with James Foley, another American journalist beheaded by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Sotloff’s religious faith was reportedly important to him.

“He was no hero,” his family emphasized in a statement. “He was a man who tried to find good in a world full of darkness.”

Very far away from where national headlines tend to be made, about 250 Catholic scholars gathered in Bismarck, North Dakota, over Labor Day weekend.

The University of Mary there was celebrating the existence of Catholic studies programs, the first one having been established by Don Briel 20 years ago in Minnesota.

In a Saturday morning talk, Father Paul Murray, an Irish Dominican, reminded the gathering of a chant that changed the history of Poland in the early summer of 1979. During John Paul II’s visit to his home country, then under the control of the Soviet Union, the people began chanting, “We want God.” That deep desire for the Lord,

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez and that public insistence that religious faith is a human right to be protected and welcomed, is one that we Americans – and Westerners – often lack confidence in today, for so many reasons. Our modern cultural institutions have a secular edge to them that, at best, assumes that sophisticated people don’t do piety, and is also increasingly hostile to robust religious faith.

Father Murray talked, among other things, about the dangers of relativism. While it appears “apparently sane and humane,” and “identified in the popular mind with such fine and necessary things as tolerance and affirmation, openness and freedom,” Murray said, relativism, despite its quiet air of inevitable reason, leaves us “disarmed just at the moment when we should be armed,” unable to successfully respond to challenges to faith.

“Surely, now is the time for us to hold fast to our Catholic faith and joyfully proclaim it,” he said, adding that that is exactly what Catholic studies programs exist to help people do.

Sotloff, who had dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship, prudently concealed his faith when reporting in the Arab world. And yet it seems to have animated and rooted him, motivating and inspiring him. He seemed to have a deep respect for Arabic and Islamic people and culture. He wanted to help in a land where religious roots run so deep as to be in the blood and ground.

As men give their lives for truth, while being sustained by a humble, substantive faith in God, we might consider our own lives and behaviors. What would we die for? What do we pray for?

These things are not simply for people under the thumb of ISIS. But those who are have certainly given some courageous witness to the power and practice of faith. Even in the midst of such brutality, they prod the rest of us to live lives committed to truth and justice, faith, hope and love, wherever we are, whatever we do.

IDPH watching for possible outbreaks MORRIS DAILY HERALD SPRINGFIELD – Several hospitals in Illinois and Missouri have recently reported clusters of severe respiratory illness in community members, especially children.

Testing of some cases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified an enterovirus, EV-D68, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Enteroviruses are transmitted through close contact

with an infected person, or by touching objects or surfaces that are contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. To help protect yourself and others from enterovirus infections: • Wash your hands often with soap and water • Avoid close contact (touching and shaking hands) with people who are sick • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces • Stay home when sick Symptoms of enterovirus

illness can include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and body aches. Because EV-D68 has not been reported commonly, the full spectrum of illness due to this type of enterovirus is not well known. Anyone experiencing cold-like symptoms and having difficulty breathing is urged to contact his or her health care provider, according to the news release.

There is no specific treatment for EV-D68 infections and no specific anti-viral medications currently available for this purpose.

This time he’s called on by many of the world’s special operations strategists to forestall a global economic crisis – or so he thinks. It’s soon apparent that what they really want is Reacher as bait. There’s been an assassination attempt on the French president by a sharpshooter. He’s made a precise and threatening, purposely not harmful, shot from the stunning distance of nearly three-quarters of a mile.

The real problem is the upcoming G8 summit, to be held at an estate outside of London.

The leaders attending will be vulnerable because of the many accessible sightlines. If one or more is assassinated, the world’s fragile economy could backslide disastrously. Calling Jack Reacher to the rescue.

But why fly Reacher, by private jet, to Paris and then London?

Reacher knows one of the sharpshooters capable of this kind of skilled marksmanship. He soon discovers evidence at a makeshift shooting range that the former Army soldier, John Kott, has fired over 1,000 50-caliber rounds distances of nearly one mile. The rifle weighs 30 pounds, which compounds the skill this feat requires. Kott had been using renderings of Reacher for target practice because Reacher, a former MP, had drawn a murder confession out of Kott 16 years earlier.

In some of these renderings, Kott has shot Reacher right between the eyes.

This is world-class shooting and only Kott and three or four other men can shoot like this. Some of the other suspects are eliminated, but not all. This

Reacher must find Kott, the American suspect, and lure him into the open before the summit. But by the end of the eight-day roller-coaster ride, Reacher finds himself baited for purposes not so worthy or overt.

The 6-foot, 5-inch, 250-pound Reacher, a retired MP who travels light, thinks fast and renders his foes insensible in split seconds, really does get into a bit of a “24”-like mess this time around.

They make a good team.

The sharpshooter is an interesting foe, but in a Jack Reacher thriller, there are usually a number of hurdles (read ‘big men who want to annihilate Reacher’) the superhero must

clear.

In “Personal,” the sharpshooter requires a lot of support to complete his mission so he procures the protection and cooperation of the local and very formidable organized crime faction.

Here Reacher meets his match and more. Joey, one of the leaders, is 7 feet tall, weighs 300 pounds and is so huge his fat fingers cannot punch out a phone number on his cell phone or fire a gun.

Also of interest, he lives in a supersized house he had built to accommodate his height. When the battle goes inside, Reacher is disoriented by the bizarre scale – average-sized human beings look like little children inside Joey’s house.

Lee Child, a native of England, is back in familiar territory in “Personal.” He has done well with the United States as Reacher’s territory and the same is true of England because, when push comes to shove comes to kick, the scale shrinks down to the essentials.

Reacher is as lively and funny as ever, and this counts for a lot. These books are written from his point of view.

He narrates his every move and thought with wit and energy.

The novels are thrillers but they’re also procedurals where Reacher’s strategic brain is what we’re really trying to discern. Forget it.

He’s always 10 steps ahead of us.

But Reacher isn’t as novel or surprising as he used to be. He’s come a long way from those rich and emotive days back in Florida when he dug ditches.

A change of venue to London is fine but it doesn’t quite do the job. I vote for putting Reacher into some unfamiliar psychological territory, a place where fists and cunning and timing aren’t the first line of offense.

Be careful ‘grazing’ – you could eat more than you should Dear Doctor K: Does eating several smaller meals throughout the day rather than three larger meals help with weight loss?

Dear Reader: We know that eating fewer calories is important to losing weight, but there is less agreement on the specifics. Are three meals a day best for weight loss? Or is it better to eat more – or less – frequently?

We can rule out eating fewer than three times a day. You’ll feel hungry, making it more likely that you will overeat and choose less healthy foods when you do eat.

In comparison, eating at least three times per day can keep you full and reduce hunger – both of which are good for weight loss.

What about eating smaller amounts throughout the day, an approach known as “grazing”?

Limited research suggests that people who graze may feel less hunger than people who eat three larger meals per day. But this does not translate into more effective weight loss.

So, it appears that how often you eat does not affect weight loss. When deciding how often to eat, consider your lifestyle and when and how often you naturally tend to feel hungry. People have different patterns; not

Also consider the pros and cons of grazing. For example, if you eat more frequently, you are less likely to be hungry, and this should prevent overeating.

On the other hand, if you eat throughout the day, you may be more likely to reach for food whether or not you are actually hungry. That surely happens to me when I work at home to write this column. I graze – a lot. It breaks up the intensity of writing.

Whatever schedule you choose, these tips should help you lose weight: • Choose foods that satisfy hunger. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins fit the bill.

• Fill up on veggies. Fill half your plate with vegetables, which are high in fiber and nutrients and low in calories.

• Be mindful. Eat when you’re

hungry, not when you’re bored.

(And not, like me, to break up the intensity of work!)

• Avoid high-calorie beverages. Sodas and juice have a lot of calories but few nutrients.

• Replace high-calorie foods with healthier, low-calorie ones.

For example, substitute one cup of pasta with a half-cup of pasta and a half-cup of broccoli.

Finally, try eating slowly when you have a full meal. After you start eating, your body begins to send your brain chemical messages to stop eating. However, these “satiety signals” take about 15 to 20 minutes to kick in.

A person can consume hundreds, even thousands, of calories in 15 to 20 minutes.

An active male and female of age 60 need 2,600 and 2,200 calories per day. If there are 3,000 calories on your plate (not unusual with many restaurants) and you consume that meal slowly, your satiety signals may kick in – and prompt you to save what you have not yet eaten for another meal.

Never legalize illegal drugs Dr. Wallace: I’m writing a paper for my sociology class about why drugs should be made legal, just as alcohol is.

That way, drugs could be controlled and taxed.

This plan would bring in a lot of tax money and drive the drug dealers out of business.

Do you know how much money Americans are spending yearly on illegal drugs? I hope so because it’s important for this figure to be part of my paper. Also, do you think drugs should be legalized? – Mario, Miami, Florida Dear Mario: Many concerned American citizens are starting to think it’s impossible to eliminate the flow of illegal drugs into this country and that legalizing them might be an acceptable alternative. I don’t agree. It is still unclear whether the U.S. is doing all we can to curb the flow of illegal drugs, but I would never want to see them legalized.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Americans spent over $100 billion on illegal drugs. This is an unthinkable amount of money wasted by human beings trying to escape reality. Add the money spent on “legal” alcohol to the money wasted on “illegal” drugs and the amount might retire the national debt.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 19-year-old girl, and I live at home with my parents and three younger brothers, 14, 12 and 8 years old. My parents and I work full time and, naturally, my brothers attend school. You should discuss your feelings with your mother and father and see if things can be worked out so that you will be doing a fair share, but not the bulk of the household chores.

And it is also important to be a family participant in discussions and activities, and this is not happening at the present time.

If your problem can’t be resolved to your satisfaction, it might be a good idea to move out of the house if you can afford it financially. You may be able to find a roommate to share the expenses.

This week we have been looking at deals in which declarer has been trying to maximize his chance of success. Here is another. How should South plan the play in seven hearts after West leads the diamond king?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise: at least four-card heart support and game-going values.

When South found three aces opposite, he bid seven hearts, thinking that it would be at worst on a black-suit finesse.

In the red suits, South has five hearts, one diamond and one diamond ruff in his hand. So it seems as though South must ruff his spade losers in the dummy, then find the club queen. But there is another possibility. If he can take four spades and two clubs, that will also result in 13 tricks.

In a vacuum, the percentage play in clubs is to cash the king, then to finesse through West.

In the real world, it is better to lead the jack from hand, hoping that West either covers with the queen or thinks about it. Or, if he plays low smoothly, to rise with dummy’s ace and finesse through East on the way back.

However, although that will work against many players, the best way to combine all of the chances is to cash the ace and king in the side suit with the greater number of cards – here, clubs. If the queen drops, fine; if not, declarer finesses in the other suit.

MAZON – Dan Matzen has transformed his small Mazon backyard into a ninja warrior training course, complete with a 17-foot warped wall and a salmon ladder, as he tries to qualify for the “American Ninja Warrior” television show.

“I watched it on TV and I said, ‘I can do that,’ ” Matzen said. “I submitted a video, but wasn’t selected for the show.”

Although he wasn’t accepted, he was chosen by the show as a tester for four days in St. Louis, where he tested the course before competitors raced their way through.

That’s when he decided to build his own course, to prepare for the show’s next season.

“I’m training to be on, but if I’m not chosen, I will wait in line to be a walk-on,” Matzen said.

While he is training, Matzen is offering up his course to ninja warriors around the country to raise money for the Cure It Foundation.

County embarks on four-year road construction plan

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Major improvements to Ridge, Brisbin and DuPont roads are among projects included in Grundy County’s four-year highway plan.

When deciding what roads should be revamped, Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem said the highway department prioritized roads and bridges most heavily used and in need of the most repair.

“Our decision is driven by the traffic. It’s driven by the condition of the roads. It’s really based on need, and we make the higher-volume roads a priority,” Cassem said.

According to the plan, 2015 will be the most expensive project year for Grundy County. In total, the highway department anticipates spending $10.8 million next year.

Widening of the Ridge Road viaduct will be the most expensive project of the year, costing more than $7.2 million.

The viaduct expansion is part of a larger project to widen Ridge Road between McEvilly and Minooka roads. Widening the road to five lanes is set to begin in 2016 and end in 2018. The

Ridge Road widening will cost an additional $6.4 million.

When finished, a bike path will run along Ridge Road.

“That area has been a bottleneck for a while,” Cassem said.

“If you go north of there, the village has already built four lanes up to I-80. So for people going south, it’s a bottleneck.”

Also scheduled for 2015 is the replacement of Spring Road bridge, costing the county $836,000.

According to Maine Township Highway Commissioner James White, the Spring Road bridge has been shut down for more than five years. The bottom of the bridge caved in years ago and local residents have waited for repairs.

“It will make it easier for people that live and farm down there,” White said. “It used to get a lot of traffic.”

Designing and reconstructing a portion of DuPont Road near Seneca is a relatively inexpensive project, but it will be a major improvement for local residents, Cassem said.

The county took control of the formerly private DuPont Road four years ago and has not made improvements since.

The widening of a two-andhalf-mile stretch of Brisbin Road will begin in 2015, costing

the county about $7 million.

Bonds will cover $5 million of that cost, Cassem said.

Between 2014 and 2018, multiple county roads will also be

sealed, patched and resurfaced, including Broadway and West Grand Ridge roads. Sealing the two roads will cost the county about $715,000.

A zoning ordinance for all cultivation centers was placed on file Tuesday by the Grundy County Board, which outlines rules future cultivation or distribution facilities would have to follow.

Mennie said the selection process will be competitive since the state allows only one center per Illinois State Police District, but they could know as early as January 2015 whether or not the Gardner site is selected.

“We have put a really good application together,” he said.

Wise said the village is cooperating with Mennies every step of the way.

“The way I see it, if we don’t get it, somebody else will,” he said.

GARDNER – In five short months, Gardner could be home to one of the state’s 22 medical marijuana cultivation centers, something that makes Mayor Tom Wise excited.

Wise said the prospect of 40 new jobs paying between $35,000 to $40,000 a year, plus the additional property tax revenues generated by the facility, would boost Gardner’s economy in a big way.

“I think it’s just a win-win situation for Gardner,” Wise said.

Operating the grow house would be Bill and David Mennie of the village of Mark, who said they intend to file their official application with the state next week. It would be the first application filed within Grundy County.

The brothers already own Mennie Machinery, a family-owned company with about 250 employees.

“We’re just trying to grow another company in the Illinois area, so we can keep expanding,” David Mennie said.

A group of several project managers and investors also are backing the Mennies’ brothers pursuit. Two of the partners have extensive expertise in agriculture and would help manage the farming operation, Mennie said.

The Gardner Village Board unanimously approved the Mennies’ application at its last meeting after they, and other investors, presented to the village.

“We’re very happy with these guys,” Wise said. “We were impressed with how they managed their other business, too.”

The cultivation center would be on a plot of property owned by farmer Chris Lenzie, Wise said.

According to David Mennie, the center would be 20,000 to 25,000 square feet in size, and they would build a well to maintain their own sewer and water connections.

If the medical marijuana pilot program is written into law in four years, Mennie said

there is a strong possibility of expanding and connecting into the city’s water main.

The Mennies have filed applications in other counties, but David said they liked Gardner’s proximity to Chicago and the support of village officials, an aspect that was highly important to them.

“You want the involvement of the city with any business venture. That’s critical. As far as investors, they want to go to a community with open arms, otherwise it’s not going to be good for anybody,” David Mennie said.

COAL CITY – The Coal City Community Unit District 1 School Board will consider measures to prevent parents from approaching coaches on the field or in the locker room.

“The athletic code we have in place states they are to wait for a 24-hour period before approaching the coach,” Superintendent Kent Bugg told the school board during their meeting Sept. 3. “We had an issue last spring, and we’ve already had one this fall.”

Bugg said during a phone interview that school officials are looking for consistency instead of dealing with issues on a case-by-case basis.

“Over the years, we have seen parents getting more aggressive in dealing with coaches,” he said. “That is why we put in place the 24-

hour cooling-off period, but we have had issues where parents violated the rule.”

He said most parents follow the athletic code, but it’s an emotional topic for some parents.

Students know the consequences of breaking the athletic code, and he said he wants the same consequences spelled out for parents and community members who attend sporting events.

Board member Shawn Hamilton said the board sets policy and he believes that holds more weight than the athletic code.

“If we go with board policy, we can have it effective immediately,” Hamilton said during the board meeting.

Bugg said he expects the board to take action at its October board meeting, once it discusses the issue at its next study session.

“My wife is in a moms group, and a friend’s daughter in that group has cancer,” Matzen said. “They said Cure It helped them through their battle, so I wanted to be able to help Cure It.” Unfortunately, because the event is hosted in his backyard, people can’t come to watch. But he hopes others will step up and donate to Cure It. He has received sponsors from companies including D’Arcy Motors in Joliet and First Community Bank in Plainfield.

First Christian Church in Morris will provide volunteers to help run the concession stand available to contestants and their families and to help on the course.

“Dan asked if the church would be interested in working the obstacle course and concessions to raise money for the church,” First Christian Church pastor Todd Thomson said. “We told him we have young adults who will work it, with the proceeds going to Cure It.” Competitors will compete in four stages with no eliminations, unlike the television show. If they fall, they will be penalized one minute for each fall.

At the end of the four stages, the top five finishers will compete to be crowned the winner.

Young Eagles flight rally set for Saturday

MORRIS – Area young people ages 8 to 17 will take to the skies on Saturday as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 95 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Morris Municipal Airport.

The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation, according to a news release from the organization.

Since its launch in 1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.8 million young people from more than 90 countries.
