overdoses in 45 days Police emphasize need for awareness

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As the year goes on, the number of heroin overdoses in Grundy County has been increasing, according to Grundy County Coroner John Callahan In the last 45 days, there have been three heroin overdoses in Grundy County and at least one more Grundy County resident dying of an overdose in another county.

“When you look at the overall numbers, they are on an incline, “ Callahan said “Over the years, we’ve had a fairly consistent number of cases.”

He said the reason for the increase can be everything from a bad batch of heroin, to heroin mixed with other narcotics, to a person who has been through rehab and falls off the wagon using more than their body can handle.

He said it isn’t surprising when the cost of a hit of heroin is less than a pack of cigarettes. Callahan said in a news release that overdose death investigations are time consuming and the actual cause of death is not known or confirmed for two to three weeks after the death. During that period, there are many aspects of death investigation taking place. All of the results of the investigation go hand in hand with the final toxicology results, which is then confirmed with autopsy findings.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the number of heroin arrests also has

increased.

“We are combating it through patrol, making street-level arrests on a daily basis,” the sheriff said. “We have zero tolerance for the drug.”

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said there are more controlled-substance arrests with other police agencies as well, such as the Morris Police Department.

He attributed some of the arrests to the addition of a K-9 officer at the Morris Police Department. The state’s attorney office purchased Talon, an Illinois State Police K-9 officer, for Morris last year. Talon, along with Morris Police Officer Patrick Funk, have been patrolling the streets since October.

“Funk is getting a lot of drug arrests,” Helland said.

Helland said the most disturbing factor in many of the drug overdose cases is that several of the victims have no criminal history and have had no police contact.

The coroner’s office, the sheriff’s department and the state’s attorney’s office work together with the No Tolerance Task Force to get information to the community about the dangers of heroin.

The NTTF will host its third heroin forum from 6 to 8 p.m.

Oct. 26 at Morris Community High School, 1000 Union St. in Morris.

Helland said education and increased awareness about heroin use are what will help address it.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Decked out in fashion from the 1950s, United Way of Grundy County and its partner agencies and donors united Wednesday night to celebrate the 2015 campaign, as well as to set goals for their next one.

The “Shake Rattle & Roll” event filled the tables at the Morris Country Club with guests wearing everything from poodle skirts to bouffant hair styles. United Way of Grundy County is nearing its goal of $495,000 for the 2014-15 campaign, which ends Sept. 30.

“To date we’ve raised 98 percent of our goal for the 20142015 campaign,” Grundy United Way board president John Roundtree told those gathered.

“Last year more than $380,000 was awarded to local not-forprofit agencies who provide vital programs and services to more than 38,000 residents in Grundy County.”

Roundtree said that for three consecutive years, the agency has exceeded its campaign goals.

“The surplus funds raised went right back into the community through mini-grants to local not-for-profit agencies,” he said.

The night wasn’t all about raising money, however. Organizers emphasized having fun in table competitions for who was best theme-dressed.

For the third year in a row, Standard Bank won the ‘Best Dressed’ competition. Its employees arrived decked out as 1950s icons like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.

Standard Bank president Kelly Beatty said the group has been working since last year to perfect their costumes.

She said they were a bit surprised at the stiff competition from Easter Seals. The winning table gets to pick an organization that will receive a free table the next year, and Easter

The Easter Seals staff put in a team effort and came prepared to win their table again.

They donned hot pink shirts, cats-eyes glasses and big bouffant wigs.

After Standard Bank edged them out for the win again, Beatty donated the table at next year’s event to the same Easter Seals team with a challenge to “bring it” for the competition next year.

tor for United Way of Grundy County said the 2015-16 goal is their biggest yet, and she’s excited about meeting the goal.

Roundtree announced the new goal, which begins Oct. 1, will be $525,000.

The money raised for the

2015-16 campaign will go to 32 agencies, three of which are new to Grundy United Way. “It’s a bigger-than-ever goal, and we’re excited to welcome the new agencies,” Nall said.

In addition to the previous 29 partner agencies United Way is welcoming Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, the Grundy County Mental Health Court and the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission. Partners are chosen based on specific programs they can offer.

The United Way board looks at needs within Grundy County to determine what programs would be most beneficial.

By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – If you’re in the market for a used vehicle, the city of Morris may have one for you.

At the Judiciary and License Committee meeting held Tuesday night before the regular Morris City Council meeting, the committee voted to authorize the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance allowing the city’s used vehicles to be sold at Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers.

The council will discuss and possibly vote on the ordinance in what will likely be a Sept. 21 meeting, Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday.

“For a long time, because of the recession, we sat on our equipment and didn’t spend,” Kopczick said Wednesday.

“But this year, we bought some much-needed vehicles.”

Eight vehicles, including Morris Police Department squad cars and Morris Public Works trucks, are on the list to be sold. The vehicles have more than 100,000 miles each.

At least one vehicle from Public Works is from 1990, he said.

There also will be a meeting of the Street and Alley Committee soon to discuss a list of equipment that could go up for sale. Kopczick said the city auctions off its old equipment and vehicles from time to time and has received a better return when using Ritchie Brothers.

The auction proceeds go into the city’s general fund, he said.

The Judiciary and License Committee also granted a business license to Albert Banushi, who intends to open Starved Rock Vapor LLC at 2419 Sycamore Drive. It’s the second license the committee has granted to someone looking to open a vape shop. The first was granted in August.

Kopczick said Wednesday it’s too early to tell if the trend will continue in Morris, but said it’s possible. He said some businesses in the community sell electronic cigarettes as one of their products, but electronic cigarettes are a niche market.

At the committee meeting, Alderman Don Matteson asked Banushi if he would sell marijuana oils. Banushi said no because electronic cigarettes are thriving with many people using the product to help transition away from cigarettes.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Costco threw a curveball Wednesday at the Morris Water and Sewer Committee.

Costco development manager Ted Johnson informed Mayor Richard Kopczick in a phone call before the scheduled committee meeting that Costco now intends to build a 256,000-square-foot meatpacking plant rather than the more than 360,000-square-foot facility originally planned.

The meeting was scheduled to address, among other items, necessary improvements to the city’s sewer treatment plant if Costco were to build a meatpacking facility using 250,000 to 400,000 gallons of water per day.

After the meeting, Kopczick said the change to the plans was unexpected, but it doesn’t alter the city’s intent to get the right system in place. He said Johnson told

him Costco began the bid-letting process for the larger facility and was surprised by the high costs.

The updated plan still features one assembly line each for hot dogs, sausage and meatballs. A future expansion, perhaps years from now he said, could add another meatball processing line and boost water use to 400,000 gallons a day.

In the meeting, Larry Good, who specializes in water and wastewater at Chamlin & Associates – the city’s engineering firm – detailed four potential plans and costs.

The city would get about $1 million from Costco toward the cost through water and sewer per acreage fees regardless of the plan chosen, Kopczick said. The rest of the expense is the city’s responsibility to fund, but will be repaid by any other future developers because the improvements would allow for possible industrial develop-

ment along Brisbin Road.

For now, the committee is looking at an option that includes a higher biochemical oxygen demand load and capacity to handle an additional 400,000 gallons a day. It would cost about $2.2 million.

The committee also is considering a more detailed plan with an unknown cost.

Good said he will work on a preliminary estimate for the project, which would fill all needs. Kopczick said that leaves plenty of room for future growth.

“I’d rather have it ready to go for further expansion,” Kopczick said.

The city’s newer of two treatment plants, which is where Costco’s waste will flow, was designed to expand to handling 4.5 million gallons.

“Right now we’re at 300,000 gallons,” Kopczick said. “Our old central plant is maxed at around 2.5 million gallons average daily flow.”

County board OKs help to Coal City subdivision

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board agreed Tuesday night to help homeowners of the Prairie Oaks subdivision clean up their waste treatment plant at a cost of $32,168.83.

The amount the county is giving the homeowners comes from an agreement with Coal City in which Grundy County was to collect $32,168.83 from the village for improvements made to South Broadway Street in 2010. The settlement was reached in July.

County Board Chairman David Welter said after the meeting that board members on the previous Finance Committee had given the homeowner association their word that they would provide aid in the clean up of the treatment plant.

The neighborhood’s septic system and treatment plant was a requirement of the development by Grundy County building code, despite homeowner’s requests to build separate septic tanks on their private property when the subdivision was built.

The Prairie Oaks subdivision was annexed into Coal City nearly a year ago to connect to the village’s sewer sanitation plant. The neigh-

borhood’s septic system was under an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency mandate to resolve its sewer issues.

To avoid fines and to stay in compliance with IEPA mandates, the homeowner’s association of 38 homeowners is required to clean up and remove the existing plant.

At the time the association approached the city for annexation, the cost to decommission the plant was $105,000.

The cost is the responsibility of the homeowners.

The county board also approved the filing of the intergovernmental agreement for Animal Control Municipal Fees that will be considered for passage at the November board meeting.

County Administrator Doug Pryor said there are no changes to the fees, and once the agreement passes it will be in effect from Dec. 1 until Nov. 30, 2016.

Municipalities, except for Channahon, within Grundy County have contracts with the county to provide animal control services.

Each municipality sets the number of patrols per week it would like from the county, as well as agree to a set fee for callouts when animal control officers are needed to address loose animals or animal bites.

Co-founder of Alaska ski race dies in ATV accident

By MARK THIESSEN The Associated Press ANCHORAGE, Alaska – One of the founders of the World Extreme Skiing Championships in Valdez, Alaska, has died in an all-terrain vehicle accident, city officials said Tuesday.

Karen Davey Stewart, 62, was found unresponsive under her ATV Monday evening on a trail, city of Valdez spokeswoman Allie Hendrickson said in a statement. Responders began CPR, and Stewart was taken to a Valdez hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Stewart helped pioneer helicopter skiing in Alaska.

She and others, including her late husband John McCune, worked to parlay that into the first backcountry skiing championships, attracting thrill-seekers like Dean Cummings to Valdez.

He was a U.S. Ski team member from New Mexico, but he never experienced anything like the rush of the Alaska event.

The race helped reinvent skiing and brought it back to the weekend warrior-type skiers, Cummings said.

Joaquin Andujar dies at age 62

By R.B. FALLSTROM The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Joaquin Andujar, a star pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980s who called himself “One tough Dominican,” has died in his native Dominican Republic. He was 62.

“He was a joy to manage,” former manager Whitey Herzog said. “Everybody knew he didn’t operate with a full deck most of the time, but when you had Joaquin on your ballclub, you were sitting on a firecracker every day.”

The team said Andujar died Tuesday. Leonardo Matos Berrido, president of the Dominican Baseball League, said the cause was diabetes complications.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of the best pitchers in Cardinals history,” Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends and his teammates today.”

Andujar was a two-time All-Star during five seasons with the Cardinals from 198185. He had 20-win seasons in 1984 and ’85, led the National League in victories in ‘84 and was a 15-game winner on the Cardinals’ World Series title team in ‘82, also winning Game 7 of the Series against the Brewers.

He won 21 games in 1985 for an NL championship team and was ejected from Game 7 of the 1985 World Series against the Royals for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Don Denkinger.

Herzog said Andujar often would arrive cranky at Busch Stadium ready to air grievances. The manager would stall, promising to talk later, and leaned on teammates Ozzie Smith and George Hendrick to get Andujar into a better mood.

Co-author of ‘Black Rage,’ Dr. William Grier dies

By JULIE WATSON The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – Dr. William Grier, a psychiatrist who co-authored the groundbreaking 1968 book, “Black Rage,” which offered the first psychological examination of black life in the United States, has died at age 89.

Grier’s eldest son, Geoffrey Grier, said Wednesday that his father died Sept. 3 at a hospice care facility in Carlsbad, a coastal city north of San Diego, after suffering a brain lesion.

Grier and Price M. Cobbs, both black psychiatrists working in San Francisco in the 1960s, co-authored “Black Rage” to explain the anger that triggered the riots after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The authors argued how the heritage of slavery contributed to the unrest decades after the end of segregation

and continued to affect society as well as the personal lives of African-Americans.

In 1969, ABC produced a TV special about the book called “To Be Black.”

Grier had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and was driven by his need to expose the long-lasting effects of social oppression, his friends and colleagues said.

“I think that desire to acquire information coupled with his social conscience formed a force that was hard to be reckoned with,” Geoffrey Grier said. “ ‘Black Rage’ was required reading in schools, colleges for a long period of time.

“It allowed all people to be able read, understand, comprehend, draw conclusions and make connections. It had a much larger impact than we think.”

His father died believing his book was as relevant today as it was when it set off

a firestorm of debate in the 1960s, he said.

“You can try to come up with another name, call it Black Lives Matter,” Grier said. “Whatever you want to say, at the end of day, there is black rage. The relevance of what they were saying is really, really on point now.”

Corrie Ort said her husband closely followed the news, including the police shootings of young black men in Missouri, New York and Baltimore. The couple lived in the beach community of Leucadia, north of San Diego.

“We really need to start listening,” Ort said.

Born in 1926 in Birmingham, Alabama, Grier saw racial injustice from a young age when his father was unfairly fired from his job as a postman, forcing the family to move in with relatives in Detroit when Grier was 12 years old, Ort said. He attended Howard University and

later medical school at the University of Michigan and became trained as a psychoanalyst in Detroit.

Cobbs said his lifelong friend reframed the way people look at anger among African-Americans.

Geoffrey Grier said he also opened the door for blacks to seek the help of a therapist,, which was unheard of before the book’s release.

His family said Grier loved classical music, jazz, was a history buff and wrote poetry.

Grier also is the father of actor and comedian David Alan Grier, known for his role on the Emmy Award-winning TV show “In Living Color” and for his work on Broadway.

Grier is survived by his wife, and children, Geoffrey, David Alan, Elizabeth and stepson Derrek Karmoen, and stepdaughter Saminah Karmoen, and two grandchildren.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Sometimes, a team can learn more about itself after a loss than a victory.

Morris football coach Alan Thorson is hoping that last week’s 19-13 overtime loss to Washington is one of those learning experiences for the Redskins heading into this Friday night’s visit to DundeeCrown.

“The kids took their lumps last week,” Thorson said after his team led, 13-0, at halftime, only to lose the game in overtime. “All you can do now is learn from it. Now, it’s time to see if we have learned what we need to learn from it.”

One of the things the Redskins want to improve on from last week is cutting down on penalties.

Morris was flagged 10 times last week, some of which stalled drives that had reached the red zone and pushed them out of scoring range.

“We’ve had a good week of practice,” Thorson said. “The first thing we did the last cou-

“They will throw the ball quite a bit,” Thorson said. “In their first game, they threw about eight or nine times, but they were ahead most of the time. In their second game, they threw it 31 times. They have a couple of running backs that have good speed, and their quarterback is a lefty who is very accurate.

“This will be a good test for our secondary. We haven’t seen a lot of passes yet this year, so we’re excited to see how we play against it.”

After a long trip to Washington last week, Morris should have its schedule figured out this week, giving the Redskins one less thing to worry about.

“We had a road trip last week, but that’s no excuse,” Thorson said. “The big thing for us is to see how we respond after a tough loss. If these kids are the kids I think they are, then I think we will play well.

“We have won this tournament three years in a row,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “Now, we will see how well we do against Ottawa on Wednesday and Streator on Saturday.”

On Tuesday, the Redskins began Northern Illinois Big 12 play with a 5-2 loss to Sycamore.

Lain and Connor McGlynn each had a goal for Morris, while Skylar Wills and Bryan Pfaff each had an assist.

“Sycamore is tough this year and have a stud up front that needs to be feared as he is only a sophomore,” Valdivia said. “We are dropping like flies due to injuries and having to dip into the JV for assistance. We never gave up, and our captain, Matt Borgstrom, had an amazing 11 saves that were crucial to keeping us in the game.

“We have a long way to go, but everyone is coming together and we are experimenting with other formations due to the injuries.”

You make many assumptions at the bridge table, based on the bidding and cards played. If those assumptions are correct, you will make a lot of winning decisions.

In today’s deal, East drew a conclusion that had no validity and gave away a game. South was in three no-trump. West led the spade queen in answer to his partner’s overcall. What should have happened?

The auction was straightforward.

East was right to overcall one spade for two reasons: His side might have been able to outbid the opponents, and to help partner with his opening lead.

Then South jumped to three no-trump with sufficient points for game and two spade stoppers.

At the table, East encouraged with the spade 10 under his partner’s queen.

However, he is still waiting for his partner to lead another spade. East’s assumption that his partner had started with two spades was not valid.

South allowed the spade queen to hold the first trick, took West’s diamond shift, and played on clubs to establish 10 tricks. He lost only one spade and two clubs.

As you have noticed, East should have overtaken the spade queen with his king.

This costs a trick only when West has the spade queen and jack, which is most unlikely given South’s jump to three no-trump.

Daughters unite in resisting mom’s domineering demands Dear Abby: At what point does a parent no longer have the right to know who their child’s friends are?

I have three grown daughters, all on their own, living on the other side of the country. During a recent visit home for their grandmother’s birthday, I asked each of them to give me all of their friends’ phone numbers, in case I couldn’t reach them.

I also wanted to know who they were exactly, how well they knew them, etc. I was simply thinking of their safety. If I can’t reach my girls, I want to know who might have seen them last and, if need be, give that information to the police.

Abby, all three of them told me NO! They said they are grown women and can take care of themselves, and
