MORRIS – At long last Tuesday evening, it was finally time for the Morris girls volleyball team to play a match in front of its own fans.

The Redskins didn’t disappoint the faithful, delivering a 25-17, 25-15 win over Geneseo behind 16 kills and nine digs from junior Illinois committ Kaylin Korte in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover match.

The Maple Leafs did their best to slow things down, but they were no match for Korte and her teammates.

“We’ve been working hard,” Korte said. “We came out here with a lot of energy and wanted to show the home crowd what we can do and what we are about. We started practice with just six players, and we have been getting better and better.

“This match was a lot slower pace than we’re used to, and sometimes that’s a hard adjustment to make. But we kept with it and got things moving pretty well in the second set. We know Thursday [at home against Lockport] will be a lot faster.”

Korte wasted no time getting the Redskins (6-2) moving, as she had five kills and a block to help stake them to an early 9-3 lead in the first game. Geneseo (2-5) closed it to within 12-9 before Korte got the serve back for Addison Polite (14 assists) with a kill.

Polite reeled off four straight points, including an ace and kills by Taya Torkelson and Emma Thomas, to put the Redskins ahead, 17-9. A kill

by Stephanie Swanson got the serve back for Geneseo, and it was time for the Leafs to have a run of their own.

By the time Kylie Kelsall got done serving, the lead was shaved to 17-15, but Korte sandwiched a pair of kills around a combined block by Thomas and Torkelson before an ace by Janelle Brehm put Morris ahead, 22-15. The two teams went back and forth after that before Korte ended it with a kill.

“Not only did Kaylin have 16 kills, which is a big number for a two-set match,” Morris coach Jackie Litwiller said. “But she only made three errors. She is very efficient with her swings. And, our setters (Torkelson and Polite) do a good job of getting her the ball where she wants it. She likes a little different ball than the rest of the

hitters, and the setters have done a very good job of putting it where she likes it.

“Things were moving a little too slowly for us in the first set. It was like we were playing in quicksand. In the second set, we found the rhythm we wanted and started playing what we like to call Morris-style volleyball. That quick pace is what we are going to see Thursday when Lockport comes in here.

“I thought Amber Misek and Janelle Brehm played very good defensive games tonight, and Taya Torkelson always shows up when we need her. I am really happy to see the connection that Addison has with Kaylin when she is setting her. If it isn’t for the passers and setters, then the hitters can’t do anything. I thought we executed in all phases very well tonight.”

Searching for God in songs of Hiss Golden Messenger

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post DURHAM, N.C. – Michael Taylor is ready to talk about God. But first, dinner. So, he hops into his Subaru Forester – a vehicle with enough room for child seats and guitar amps – and drives off to a restaurant in downtown Durham. Inside, there are fancy pizzas, bartenders who know his name and his manager, Brad Cook, who’s sipping a tequila gimlet and radiating good vibes. He clamps Taylor in a bear hug and quickly launches a tiny debate over which song Taylor should sing on “Letterman” in November.

“Dude!” Cook says. “Trust me!”

Taylor is a trusting dude, a devoted dad and, as Hiss Golden Messenger, an author of still-water folk songs that dive deep into the complications of faith. His superb new album, “Lateness of Dancers,” is being released Tuesday, his 39th birthday, by Merge Records, the macro-indie label headquartered just a few blocks away from this pizza spot. The songs on it feel both ambiguously sweet and deeply personal, but ultimately confident in their own vagueness.

“Mike’s level of thoughtfulness and deliberation is pretty unique,” his labelmate and sometimes-collaborator William Tyler says later over the phone. “His songs aren’t about sexy topics – they’re about being a father and searching for your place in the universe.

I think he’s a gospel singer in a lot of ways.”

But not in every way.

During his new album’s finale, Taylor sings, “Take the good news, carry it away,” refusing to indicate whether that good news should be shared or shredded.

Michael Taylor, who records as Hiss Golden Messenger, near his home in Durham, North Carolina. inhabits this highly charged middle space, the chasm between faith and doubt. His strongest melodies simultaneously suggest jubilation and despair, comfort and restlessness. His singing is cool and sharp, somewhere between James Taylor’s serenity and Bob Dylan’s agita. He never sounds stuck in the middle. He sounds as if he’s conquering the middle.

“This combination of things that I do – the lyrical content, the rhythmic content,” he says, “it’s this weird alchemy that belongs to me.”

Concurrently, his search for God has been every bit as unique. But maybe not as successful.

After dinner, he heads back to the house where his wife, Abby, has already put their kids – Elijah, 5 years, and Ione, 14 months – to bed. Taylor disappears into the kitchen and returns carrying four beers and a bottle of Glenlivet.

“C’mon.”

He tip-toes down to a small room in the basement where he writes his songs. There are four white walls, a white

paper lantern, vines of white Christmas lights and an old turntable. He cracks a beer and drops the needle on a Byrds song – “Old Blue,” one of the first songs that made Taylor wonder whether he should try writing some songs of his own.

“I felt like I had struck on this thing,” Taylor says of those early songs. “This was my musical voice that I’d been searching for for so long.”

Taylor grew up in Orange County, riding skateboards in the California sunbeams. He joined a hardcore punk band, Ex-Ignota, while at college in Santa Barbara, then moved to San Francisco to lead the Court and Spark, a folk-rock group that burned brightly, then quickly burned out.

Exhausted and discouraged, Taylor relocated to North Carolina in 2007 to get his master’s in folklore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“It would be a great way to restart my brain, which had just atrophied from years of weed and drinking and drugs,” Taylor says of the move.

By 2009, everything was

different. He was a graduate navigating fatherhood, ample student loan debt, unpaid heating bills and unresolved thoughts about higher powers.

“I was baptized Episcopalian, but my parents had a hard time with church, so I don’t really have that in my background,” Taylor says.

“But I’m not saying I don’t believe in God. I’m skeptical.

And the people telling me God does exist don’t seem like reputable sources. I see God being used as a tool for violence and mayhem. Whether it’s the North Carolina GOP totally dismantling social services for low-income people and the elderly, or ISIS causing chaos, or Israel and Palestine killing each other over their prophets.”

He sets down his guitar.

“It never seems like American Christians are ever following the teachings of Jesus as I understand them to be – and they’re not that difficult to understand. I don’t want to be dissuaded from this idea of belief by people who claim to be experts on Jesus Christ.

But to me, they seem ignorant.

So I’m trying to find this other way to faith. But I’m looking for a back door.”

He pries the cap from a sweaty bottle of beer.

“It feels funny to be talking about America writ large, but faith is a big part of American culture and I want to feel like I have some sort of sense of what that is, and what it means, and a sense of the good that can come from that. ... I don’t want to be talking about music with everybody all the time. I want another connection that’s based on love and wisdom – what I think of when I think of the teachings of Jesus.”

And then he laughs.

“But I’m having a hard time finding that.”

But problems may arise when the baby is born.

Tony knows about it and the possibility that the baby will be mixed. He feels strongly that he will help me raise the child as his own.

My family knows nothing about this, nor does my ex. Dehydration often culprit causing brittle nails Dear Doctor K: As I’ve gotten older, my fingernails have become very brittle. They chip, break and split easily. I’ve also noticed ridges. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients notice that their fingernails become thinner, more brittle and fragile with age.

Nails may split lengthwise, or separate in thin layers at the tips. The nails may look different as well. They may become yellowed or dull, and many develop thin, vertical ridges.

Brittle nails usually result from dehydration. Your nails may be dehydrated if you live in a dry climate, frequently wash and dry your hands, or if you often use nail polish remover.

Here are some things you can do to keep your nails healthy and combat dehydration: • Avoid long hot baths or showers.

• Always moisturize your hands after washing and drying them.

• Use a moisturizer (petroleum jelly is fine) on your hands and nails at bedtime.

• Avoid prolonged exposure to cold, dry weather. Wear

• Trim your nails regularly to keep them short and smoothly rounded at the tips.

• Protect fingernails from injury. Wear gloves if you are working with your hands.

• Don’t bite your nails or the protective cuticles around them.

• Don’t use nail polish remover more than twice a month.

• If you get manicures, stick with reputable nail salons that sterilize instruments. Better yet, bring your own.

• Trim your nails only after soaking them or after a bath or shower. They’ll be less likely to split.

• File your nails in one direction only, and use a fine emery board or file.

• In hot weather or when exercising, stay well hydrated.

The vertical lines or “ridg-

ing” you mentioned is a natural part of nail growth. Ridging tends to happen more as we get older, and I don’t know of any way to eliminate it.

Finally, don’t fall for the many myths and misconceptions about nail care. For example, eating gelatin or soaking your nails in it will not make your nails healthier or longer.

I recall the first time a patient asked me about her brittle nails. Particularly since this patient also had serious heart and lung disease, I wondered why she was bringing it up.

I surely hadn’t been taught anything in medical school about problems with fingernails.

A senior colleague gave me some wise advice: “People care about their appearance – a lot.

Some people care more about their appearance than about their life-threatening illnesses.

Don’t dismiss those concerns.”

Teen has right to happiness Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have been married to my husband, who is 33, for seven months.

We attend the same church, and he was also our Christian youth director. I came from a troubled home. My father was physically abusive to my mother and me, and I’m sure he’s an alcoholic, or at least headed that way.

Ever since I met him, I really liked my now-husband. He brought hope and stability to my life. When he asked me to marry him, I jumped at the chance, and we have a very happy marriage.

My very best friend and I have been friends since we started first grade together. We really bonded when we got to high school because she and I had similar situations at home. She advised me not to marry my husband because she thought he was too old for me. She and I both have jobs and, now that I’m married, we don’t see that much of each other. We talk on the phone and sometimes get together for lunch on a Saturday.

The last couple of times I’ve had lunch with Karla, she has had unkind things to say about my husband. She always says, “I think your husband ... “ but she is just guessing and she’s usually wrong.

Last week, she told me that he was too old for me and that someday I’d wind up being his nurse and a lot of my years would be wasted.

She told me to my face that she would advise me to get divorced now before we start having children.

I love my husband and enjoy our life together, but I’m getting tired of my friend’s negative remarks about my

husband, and especially about being his nurse for years and years.

What can I do to get my friend to talk about more pleasant things and stop belittling my husband? I try to change the subject, but she continues. – Nameless, New Orleans, Louisiana Dear Nameless: Your friend is an unhappy young woman who foolishly thinks she can regain a full-time friend by spreading poisonous doubts about her husband. Simply put, she’s jealous of your husband.

By her incessant negativity, she’s saying: “You have to choose: him or me.”

Well, the choice is obvious – it has to be your husband. Stop the lunches and phone calls with her. Write her a letter or email and tell her that your husband is the most important person in your life, and you’re sick of the way she bad-mouths him.

Tell her you no longer want to see her, at least for the time being, but for the sake of the longtime friendship, you’ll consider resuming your friendship in the future.

There are bridge deals that appear to fit a mold, but with careful analysis, one can see that they are not an inert reproduction of accepted practice.

In today’s deal, South is in two no-trump. How should he plan the play after West leads the heart queen and East signals with his nine?

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart and three diamonds. There are two routes to eight tricks: four spades, one heart and three diamonds; or two spades, one heart and five diamonds. Getting four spade tricks seems to require the finesse to work – a 50 percent chance; while collecting five diamond winners is a 54 percent shot.

So it seems right to play on diamonds. Here, though, when the diamonds break badly, South does not have a hand entry to take the spade finesse. He will cash the spade ace and king to drop the queen, but that only provides three tricks in the suit, not four.

The right line, after winning with the heart ace, is to lead the spade jack to encourage West to cover if he has the queen. But after he plays low, declarer wins with dummy’s king and cashes the spade ace. When the queen drops, South leads a spade to his nine, then takes dummy’s three top diamonds and spade 10 for his contract.

If the spade queen does not appear, declarer needs diamonds to run.

People who do carpentry, insulation or siding can translate their on-the-job training into college credits or certificates under a Joliet Junior College program.

The community college partnered with the Chicago Regional Council of Carpen-

ters to create the program, which aims to better train apprentices and sharpen the skills of journeymen who have completed their union training.

On Tuesday, Frank Libby, the union’s president, thanked the community college, along with Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, for supporting the program’s creation. The dream of attending college or earning a degree is no longer elusive to tradespeople, he

BILL HART, JR. Bill Hart, Jr., age 69, of Coal City, passed away suddenly September 8, 2014, at Morris Hospital with family at his side - following a courageous battle with cancer.

Bill was employed many years with Caterpillar Tractor Co., from where he retired. He enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. Bill also enjoyed the Thursday night man cave and Saturday nights at the party garage. Bill was an avid Cubs and Bears fan who will be missed by all.

Survivors include his wife, Norma (nee Corn); sons: Kregg (Jami) Hart and Kevin (Tracy) Hart, all of Coal City; grandchildren: Kori (Jacob) Weatherhead, Megan Hart and Matthew (Jessi)

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Wheelchair-bound and without ramps to help her get around, Tressa Vergonet felt like a “caged animal” living alone inside her Goose Lake home.

An immune system disorder and other health problems rendered Vergonet unable to walk last December.

For eight months, she struggled. Getting the mail, letting out the dog, answering the door; daily chores became daily battles – often ending with a trip to the emergency room – in a home ill-equipped for Tressa’s wheelchair.

Adding accessibility ramps would be costly, especially for Vergonet, a senior on a “very limited income.”

“I was feeling hopeless. All these days and months went by, and I thought I was just going to live out my days like this,” Vergonet said.

At her darkest hour, something special happened.

“God intervened. I really believe that He did,” she said.

Call it divine intervention or call it community kindness, but Saturday, Vergonet was gifted a new wheelchair ramp from the First Christian Church of Morris and the Grundy County Health Department.

The department supplied funding for raw materials, and the church provided skilled labor. In just eight hours, a group of four church volunteers built a ramp for Vergonet’s front door, providing access to her front yard, sidewalk and driveway.

Each year, the health department receives a federal grant of about $1,000 to help a local senior with home repairs.

Typically, the small grant is enough to help only one local senior. Vergonet was this year’s grant recipient, said Deb Wyeth, Senior Program coordinator for the health department.

“She was homebound, and we definitely saw the need,” Wyeth said.

The grant alone could not pay for a new ramp, which can cost several thousand dollars.

Without volunteer labor from

the First Christian Church, the project would not have been possible.

As a lifelong Catholic and member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Vergonet was “amazed” that another local church was willing to help someone outside of their congregation.

“I want to thank each and every member of that church.

They don’t care about race, or creed, or anything. They just help,” she said.

Helping strangers is nothing new for First Christian Church member Jamie Bradley, one of several First Christian churchgoers involved in the community outreach ministry known as “Project 25.”

Since Project 25 began last year, the church has helped feed local students, provide transportation to prisoners and complete improvement projects for a number of local homes and businesses, Bradley said.

“What we wanted to do was reach out to the community, help existing agencies in the community and help ministries that are already there instead of trying to create some of our own,” he said.

The coordination between nonprofits and the health department is something administrator Phil Jass is working hard to facilitate.

Seeing great need in the community but having limited resources, Jass said the health department is trying to partner with local churches, community groups and charities to fill in service gaps.

“We don’t want to duplicate services. We want to maximize our resources from the county and use it the best way we can,” Jass said. “We don’t want to reinvent the wheel. We just want to add to it.”

Wyeth said many local seniors, like Vergonet, are confined to their homes without ramp accessibility and they need assistance. It’s help the health department can’t always provide.

Partnerships such as the one with First Christian help bridge the gap, Wyeth said.

Tuesday morning, Vergonet smiled as she practiced maneuvering on her new ramp, something she is still getting used to.

“I could go all the way to the end of my driveway, if I wanted,” she said. “Nothing can stop me now.”

County prepares for medical marijuana growers, sellers

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Marijuana can be grown and sold within Grundy County, as long as it’s not near churches, schools, parks, forest preserves, day cares, residential areas and other “protected” areas.

That’s what a proposed Grundy County ordinance states.

The Grundy County Board placed the ordinance on file Tuesday evening. Next month, the board will revisit the marijuana ordinance and make its final decision.

The proposed ordinance regulates every minute detail about potential marijuana grower or seller operations, and is in conjunction with state law.

Among the regulations are a long list of areas where potential growers and sellers are prohibited. With those regulations in place, marijuana facilities would be relegated to secluded sections of Grundy.

“Practically, it has to be out in the wilderness some place,” Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman told the County Board on Tuesday.

Cultivation centers have to be 2,500 feet, or roughly onehalf mile, from any schools, day care centers or residential areas.

Dispensaries must be 1,000 feet from schools, day care centers, residential areas, parks, forest preserves, churches, other dispensaries.

As a type of farming operation, all marijuana growing centers also must be registered with the Department of Agriculture and comply with their rules for growing.

“The way I look at it, [this ordinance] is a protection for the county, because we then – Grundy County – determine where we want these dispens-

ing operations,” board member John Almer said Tuesday.

Those wishing to become a grower or seller are subject to rigorous vetting from the state before they can receive proper licensing.

Chairman Ron Severson said the Gardner’s municipal board approved an application for a medical marijuana cultivation center Monday night. The potential growers are proceeding with their application and placing it on file with the state.

However, only one grower is allowed per Illinois State Police District for security purposes. This means Grundy is competing with Will, Kendall and other counties to house the cultivation center.

The Gardner center could create as many as 40 jobs, Sev-

erson said.

“This is not an endorsement of marijuana plantations in Grundy County,” Rudman said. “It’s simply to have our zoning laws ready if, as and when the application is made.”

Other action • The board hired Tony Arnold of Minooka as the Maintenance Director for the Grundy County Administration Building. Arnold will be paid $21 an hour, according to Chairman Severson.

• The county agreed to pay Computer Consulting Information Concepts Inc. $38,801 for a four-year contract. The firm will provide record keeping and revenue stamp services for the county.

Ukraine counsul general updates Rotary on crisis

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Consul General of Ukraine Andriy Pravednyk spoke to the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club on Tuesday to discuss the conflict between his homeland and Russia.

Pravednyk said Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies attacks in Ukraine as an attempt to preserve Russian culture and language.

“I have to tell you, that was never true,” Pravednyk said. “[The separatists] found some people who were not happy with their lives and managed to persuade them. They started creating what they call rebels, for their rights. We call them terrorists.”

Ukraine has large companies that produce military and civil rockets. Without those facilities, Russia could not produce its own rockets, Pravednyk said.

Pravednyk said his people fear Russia taking control of Ukraine’s facilities and using the weapons against its own people.

Pravednyk also spoke about the Union Association Agreement signed in June between Ukraine and Europe, which opened doors for “deep and comprehensive fair trade, economic reform” and a way for “Ukraine to fully integrate

living in Ukraine who remain communists, Pravednyk said.

He spoke of his own grandfather, a communist, whose monthly pension was reduced from the American equivalent of $200 a month to $40 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. His grandfather was living a comfortable life until then. Because he was never subjected to imprisonment or other harsh treatments, he believed he was better off before that time.

While a ceasefire agreement was made between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels on Friday, there has been official confirmation that separatists have already breached it several times, Pravednyk said.

The one positive thing Putin has done for Ukraine, according to Pravednyk, is to unite its people and to bring them together as a proud country.

MORRIS – The 2015 budget for Morris Community High School District 101 puts the district in a better position than the district’s tentative budget showed.

Next year’s budget shows about $14.76 million in projected expenses across all its funds versus about $12.58 million in projected revenue. The budget maintains the existing education program at the schools.

There are some changes.

The district hired a special education social worker, a move related to its decision to decentralize its special education coordinator and social worker positions. It notified the Grundy County Special Education Cooperative of that decision last October.

The final budget includes a $114,192 increase in revenue from the fiscal 2014 budget, while expenditures show a decrease of $363,899 from 2014.

The tentative budget showed a $60,000 increase in expected revenues, while expenditures showed a decrease of a little more than $250,000.

“It’s a positive move from the tentative budget to today,” Superintendent Pat Halloran

told the board Monday night.

The district has a nearly $2.18 million deficit in its Education Fund. Operating this fund on a deficit has been standard for the district since Midwest Generation closed and the district lost 35 percent of its local equalized assessed value in 2004. It then began issuing working cash bonds to help pay for operations.

The school board approved the budget Monday by unanimous vote.

Education fund revenue changes in the final budget were due to an increase in direct revenue, Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax and general state aid, despite decreases in local sources and the property tax levy.

There was a decrease in special education reimbursement on the revenue side, which occurred because of a decrease in purchased services. That also positively affected the budget.

“Due to fewer special education students in private facilities outside of our county, we see a positive effect on the budget,” Halloran said.

Board president Denny Best said, with all things considered, the board did the best with what they had to work with.

Younger generations are embracing pickling as a way to explore their interest in food, preserve the season’s bounty and cut their food budgets.

Andrea Garza has been pickling for 10 years and knows several people who have gotten into the hobby as a way to preserve the abundance of vegetables from their backyard gardens.

“Others want to try and save a little money,” Garza said. “Either way, it is becoming popular.”

In a small saucepan, combine 1¾ cups water with the sugar, salt, star anise, cinnamon stick and cloves. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let steep 5 minutes. Stir in vinegar. Place cherries in a 1-quart (4-cup) glass jar. Pour in enough vinegar mixture to cover cherries and almost completely fill the jar; you can either strain out the whole spices or place them in the jar.

Place the jar on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and no more than 2 weeks.

Online privacy can be elusive It is a rare celebrity who dreads exposure, but the computer hackers who broke into Apple’s iCloud service platform to steal intimate photos, emails and phone contacts of wellknown actors have brought new meaning to the problem.

The FBI is not amused. The bureau is investigating the theft of nude photos from what was supposed to be the protected iCloud account of actress Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence’s photos were deposited on an anonymous image sharing site where the public has unrestricted access.

As many as 100 celebrities have had their iCloud accounts compromised by determined hackers. They are believed to have taken advantage of a back door in Apple’s “Find My iPhone” app to infiltrate and raid the image storing platform.

That back door has since been closed, but the fix comes too late for many who once believed that cloud-based platforms added an extra layer of security that was practically impregnable.

It shouldn’t be necessary to state the obvious, but in this case it is: Because there are bad people lurking on the Internet, a good rule of thumb is to assume that once photos are uploaded, a determined thief or voyeur can get at them.

That said, it isn’t enough to tell celebrities or ordinary people to stop uploading nude photos of themselves to the cloud – many people will do whatever they like without regard to the consequences. It’s still important that image storing platforms such as iCloud constantly update their security protocols.

Apple and its competitors should also level with the public: There is no such thing as privacy in cyberspace.

Tuition at U of I needs to be more affordable SPRINGFIELD – More often than not, when students receive an admission letter from the University of Illinois, they opt to attend another college.

That’s a sad state of affairs for Illinois’ flagship university.

The U of I is a terrific school. My father graduated from its Champaign campus 54 years ago with a degree in veterinary medicine, I received a master’s degree from its Springfield campus back in 1988, when it was still called Sangamon State, and my niece graduated this year from the U of I with a bachelor’s degree.

But folks, right now the university is pricing itself out of the market.

That information came out this month when the agenda for a U of I Trustees meeting was released.

The reason most often cited for youngsters telling the U of I “no” is the school costs too much to attend.

An incoming freshman at the U of I is expected to plunk down $12,036 a year for tuition. That doesn’t count room and board, which can double the price tag for a year.

Officials at Illinois say they may need to offer more in the way of financial aid to attract students offered admission.

A more effective solution would be to lower tuition cost for all students.

Sure it’s expensive to go to college just about anywhere these days. But other states are charging considerably less for in-state students to attend their flagship universities. It costs $2,200 less a year at the University of Texas, $3,957 less at the University of Iowa and $3,662 at University of North

Carolina.

Kids smart enough to be admitted to the University of Illinois are smart enough to count their dollars and often are choosing elsewhere.

According to university data, back in 2006, 58 percent of Illinois students offered admission to the U of I attended. Last fall, that number dropped to 45 percent.

That’s right. When most kids receive their coveted admission they letter say, “No, thanks.”

A gravy train isn’t going to be chugging into Champaign from Springfield anytime soon. So the university needs to come up with ways of spending less and charging students less.

Already 13 percent of Illinois state university employees are opting for a 401k-type retirement plans rather than a traditional pensions. This option affords employees greater economic freedom to move from job to job without losing benefits.

More employees need to be encouraged to consider this option.

Exorbitant pensions paid to university professors and administrators are contributing to the escalating tuitions paid by undergraduates.

In fact, nine of the 10 highest pensions paid within Illinois state government go to retired U of I professors.

Topping the list is a professor who worked at the university’s Chicago campus. He collects an annual pension of $452,843.

That pension alone would cover the tuitions of 37 students.

Greater student affordability can be achieved through university fiscal responsibility.
