By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Julie Buck sat Monday morning in the new office for the Community Foundation of Grundy County as movers brought in load after load of files, furniture and other necessities.

The fresh wood floors and new light fixtures, along with a new office configuration, made the office space at the CanalPort Community Center unrecognizable from the office that once housed We Care of Grundy County.

One of the most noticeable changes is a coffee bar, which will be one of the first things visitors see when they enter.

“We want people to come in the door and discuss options with us, so we built a coffee bar,” said Buck, the executive director for the Community Foundation.

Buck said the organization hopes its office space becomes the community nonprofit hub that Jim and Carol Baum saw when they created it from the older-than-a-century building that once housed Coleman’s Hardware.

In addition to the three front offices that will house the Community Foundation staff, additional office spaces in the back are available to rent on a full- or part-time basis for other nonprofit services in Grundy County.

“The purpose of the additional office space is to lure services to Grundy County,” Buck said. “Many not-forprofits don’t have a part-time presence in the community because they can’t afford a fulltime office.”

Jay Fillman, a Community Foundation board member, said the mission of the foundation is to make the community a better place, and having other nonprofit organizations closer to home for Grundy County residents contributes to that goal.

Each rental office will have access to a small conference room, Internet access, storage and parking. Renters will be able to use the copier/printer and pay per usage. Phone usage also will be a case-by-case basis depending on whether the agency wants to forward a phone line or use staff cellphones.

Each of the three offices is about 8 feet by 10 feet and will be available at $10 a half-day and $20 a full day. If an agency wants to rent one for three mornings a week, it would cost $120 a month. Similarly, a full-time rental will be $400 per month.

Community Foundation Board President Ralph Wolter said the idea of helping others is exciting for the group.

In addition to having the office spaces for rent the Community Foundation will be scheduling the community conference room available to the community since Baum created the nonprofit condo idea.

MORRIS – The lives of the Allen family of Morris changed forever March 18, 1985.

At just 24 years old, James Allen was the lead on the fire hose during a rural fire when a backdraft came through a back door. James Allen never returned home.

“I was there that day, behind him on the hose line,” Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Deputy Fire Chief Bob Wills said Saturday. “He was the lead and I was getting more hose when a backdraft hit and blew me up the stairs. There was no way I could get back down to him.”

Saturday, in a somber yet joyful gathering of friends, family, fire and police officers, a portion of Route 47 between High and Benton streets in Morris was dedicated as the Firefighter James Allen Memorial Highway.

James Allen’s brother, John Allen of Fair Oaks, Indiana, said their dad, Kenneth, was a firefighter for the volunteer Morris Fire Department for 27 years, so the boys practically were raised in the firehouse.

“As kids, our home phone had a certain ring if it was a fire call. James would hop on his bike and ride to the fire location and watch and learn from the men,” John Allen said. “He took training classes in high school and when he was fully eligible at 21, he joined the force as a volunteer.”

James Allen’s mother, Judy Steffes of Demotte, Indiana said it wasn’t unusual for James to be walking around with any pair of boots he could find and a helmet.

“He knew he wanted to be a fireman since he was 2 years old,” she said.

James Allen was married at the time of his death to Don-

na Allen, and the two had one son, Ken Allen, who was only 3 when his father died.

Ken Allen, who lives in Darien, said he has vague memories, but loves hearing stories about his father and hopes to pass them down to his children – his daughter Briana and son J.J., whom is partially named after his late grandfather.

“I was told he was tall and the kind of guy who was noticed when he walked into a room,” Ken Allen said.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, and Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Fire Chief Tracey Steffes collaborated to have the section of highway named after James Allen.

With the lobbying by Legislative Liaison Office of the State Fire Marshal, George Korda, help from state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and others, the motion went through the Illinois Legislature unanimously in 2015.

“As a former first responder, I want to take care of those who put their lives on the line.

I want to thank Sue (Rezin) for getting it through the Senate and I’m honored to represent these great people,” Anthony said.

As a crowd of more than 100 gathered Saturday, James Allen’s father, Kenneth Allen, sat in a chair as Rezin spoke and handed him the official memorial highway acknowledgement papers from the Senate.

“Thank you to the Allen family. This is one way we can recognize James and the service he provided to the community. A definition of a hero is someone who gives his life through serving,” Rezin said.

Kenneth Allen spoke of his son and his service.

“He was a fine man all of the time,” he said. “He was always helping people and loved the job. I am so proud of him.”

Budget stall could nix employees’ insurance

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com The Illinois budget crisis continues to threaten communities and many governmental entities in the state in different ways.

If a state budget for fiscal 2016 isn’t passed by Sept. 30, employees of the 97 soil and water conservation districts in Illinois – which includes both the Grundy County and Will-South Cook County districts – will lose their health insurance.

Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District Administrative Coordinator Brooke Baker said employees in many counties will not be working, either.

“There would be no employees in office and no services provided [in Grundy County],” Baker said.

Baker works 25 hours a week, and the other Grundy SWCD employee left last fall for a teaching job because of the lack of funding. Each district is supposed to have at least two employees.

At the Will-South Cook SWCD, three employees are working – two full time and one part time. District Manager Kim Mitchell said her district would lose health insurance but it would be able to work, at least in the short term, because much of their work is done through privately paid mandates.

The Will-South Cook SWCD represents the Illinois EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in programs which permit and monitor construction sites, ensuring that development does not have a negative impact on water quality.

“We’re a little more stable in the near future than Grundy due to construction oversight,” Mitchell said. “But long term is another story.”

One would think the budget impasse would eventually have an impact on the IEPA mandate, Mitchell said, but so far the state hasn’t said it would.

The most immediate threat from the impasse is to health insurance and employment.

Many offices have cut down due to funding issues. Baker said funding of the Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District was cut 70 percent from 2008 to 2014. Last year, an additional 36 percent was cut out of the $18,000 it was promised.

Some districts get funding from county boards, Baker said. The Grundy SWCD gets about $2,500 from the Grundy County board. Some counties receive $25,000 to $40,000.

Mitchell said Will-South Cook doesn’t receive county funding.

“Now we’re not guaranteed we’ll be in this year’s budget,” Baker said.

She pointed out layoff notices with a date of Sept. 30 have been sent to eight Illinois Department of Agriculture employees downstate. At least 171 state employees would be laid off, according to published reports.

A few weeks ago, Carla was doing her typical Morris-to-Seneca ride when she stopped at Casey’s General Store in downtown Seneca for a break and to buy something to drink.

While there, she saw a collection can for a local resident – and it was for a used bicycle.

“I typically stop at the BP. This time I went to Casey’s and saw the can, so I mentioned it to the bike club,” she said.

After members discussed helping the resident, they sent Jim Bianchetta back to Seneca to get in contact with the person needing a bike.

“I was going to drop my phone number in the can and ask them to call me,” he said.

“When I got there, the can was gone.”

But a missing collection can wasn’t going to stop Joliet Bicycle Club members from helping. Jim Bianchetta left a number with the manager of the store.

the rental space was looked at, and now that the GCCF has moved in, she hopes to get some neighbors.

Buck said the organization will hold a ribbon cutting and open house sometime in October after the Grundy County Corn Festival.

The foundation purchased the 3,670-square-foot We Care condo in the center for $100,000.

The foundation board paid for half of the purchase with a match from the Baums.

Jim Baum is a trustee of the board, but also is a founder and former foundation president.

Horror movie director Wes Craven dies at age 76

By DAISY NGUYEN and JAKE COYLE The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – It’s hard enough to redefine a genre once in a career, but horror virtuoso Wes Craven managed to do it twice.

The prolific writer-director, who died Sunday at age 76, ushered in two distinct eras of suburban slashers, first in the 1980s with his iconic “Nightmare on Elm Street” and its indelible, razor-fingered villain Freddy Krueger. He did it again in the 1990s with the self-referential “Scream.”

Both reintroduced the fringe genre to mainstream audiences and spawned successful franchises.

Perhaps it was his perfectly askew interpretation of the medium that resonated with his nail-biting audiences.

“Horror films don’t create fear,” Craven said. “They release it.”

Robert Englund, the actor who brought Freddy Krueger to life, wrote on Twitter that

Craven didn’t solely deal in terror. He also directed the 1999 drama “Music of the Heart,” which earned Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination.

But his name and his legacy will always be synonymous with horror.

He earned a master’s degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University and briefly taught as a college professor in Pennsylvania

and New York, but his start in movies was in pornography, where he worked under pseudonyms.

Craven’s feature debut under his own name was 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” a horror film inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s “The Virgin Spring,” about teenage girls abducted and taken into the woods. Made for just $87,000, the film, though graphic enough to be censored in many countries, was a hit. Roger Ebert said it was “about four times as good as you’d expect.”

“Nightmare on Elm Street,” however, catapulted Craven to far greater renown in 1984. The Ohio-set film is about teenagers, including a then unknown Johnny Depp, who are stalked in their dreams. Craven wrote and directed, starting a franchise that has carried on, most recently with a 2010 remake.

The concept, Craven said, came from his own youth in Cleveland – specifically an Elm Street cemetery and a homeless man that inspired Krueger’s raged look.

The opera’s artistic director, Mihai Cosma, said the singer died Sunday after a twoyear illness.

Iordachescu sang in 61 countries with artists such as Placido Domingo, Monserrat Caballe and Luciano Pa-

varotti. He performed in more than 1,000 operas, including at the Opera de Paris and in Munich, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Los Angeles and New York.

Iordachescu made his debut in Bucharest in 1949 and his last performance was in 2005.

The Los Angeles Times wrote in 1974 that “Iordachescu is a phenomenon. His voice is immense, dark in color, resonant ... indefatigable.” His voice was at its best during Romania’s communist era, which ended in 1989.

He branched out into teaching later on.

He was 81.

His death was announced Monday by TSN, where Legatt was a network host from 1986 to 2000. Known for his Scottish brogue, Leggat helped expand soccer’s profile in Canada, covering five World Cups and two Olympics. He covered World Cup

soccer for CBC in 1974.

Leggat came to Canada in 1971 and was the first coach of the Toronto Metros. He was an executive with the NASL’s Edmonton Drillers in 1979 and 1980. He was inducted to the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2001.

Leggat spent six seasons in the Scottish league, helping Aberdeen win the league title in 1955. He also played in England for Fulham and Birmingham City, among other clubs. He played 18 games for Scotland, including the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, where Pele burst to prominence.

From creativity to corruption, Mandel was a political force

By BRIAN WITTE The Associated Press ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A colorful and complex figure in Maryland politics, Marvin Mandel was seen by some as an innovator who reorganized state government to be more efficient.

For others, he was forever stained by his conviction for selling the powers of office.

Mandel died Sunday afternoon after spending two days with family celebrating his stepson’s 50th Marvin Mandel birthday.

He was 95.

The cause of death was not yet known.

He was widely acknowledged as a creative and effective governor who restructured state government and pushed big school construction and mass transit initiatives. Yet he made national headlines in a political corruption scandal that sent him to federal prison in a legal case that was later overturned. Then, there was his tumultuous personal life – including a temporary exile from the governor’s mansion when he left his wife of 32 years to marry another woman. His first wife, Barbara “Bootsie” Mandel, wouldn’t leave the mansion.

A popular governor, Mandel was elected in 1970 and again in 1974 with about two-thirds of the vote each time.

BUSINESS Hospital associate honored as Fire Starter of the Month SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Morris resident Betty Lenik doesn’t like to be idle. An environmental services Associate in the surgery department at Morris Hospital, Lenik prefers to be on the move, constantly helping others to assure everything is flowing smoothly.

Lenik was named Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for July, according to a news release from the hospital.

“Betty is an integral part of our surgical team,” Jennifer Brown, a nurse in the surgery department who nominated Lenik as Fire Starter of the Month, said in the release.

“She is always thinking ahead, trying to determine our needs for our operating rooms. Her actions help to facilitate a quicker turnover in between cases so we can stay on schedule. Without Betty, many of our nights in surgery would not flow as smoothly as they do.”

Brown’s words mean a lot

to Lenik, who enjoys being part of the surgery team at Morris Hospital just as much as she enjoys keeping the operating rooms in top condition.

Lenik joined the Morris Hospital family in 2005 after working in food service at the Exelon Dresden Station.

She originally was assigned to the patient care units on the hospital’s second floor when she had the opportunity to fill in for a co-worker in surgery and has been “loving it ever since.”

“I picture myself or a family member needing to be on the operating table. I don’t want any diseases or germs coming into the operating rooms,” Lenik said in the release. “I enjoy doing a little bit of everything.

That’s what makes you feel like you’re part of the team.”

Morris Hospital surgery director Linda Wiesbrook also sings Lenik’s praises, describing her as an individual who is constantly aware of what’s going on around her.

“Betty is very intuitive, and she looks for opportunities to

help out,” Wiesbrook said in the release. “She doesn’t just wait for someone to tell her what to do. She will come to us because she notices something that needs to be done.

She offers suggestions. It’s her intuitive spirit that makes her very successful here. She is very concerned about making things perfect and goes out of her way to help our staff.”

For Lenik, it’s a win-win situation because she gets to be around people and help them.

And helping people is what gives her the biggest spark.

“I like being here and always try to do my best every day,” she said in the release.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – In many sports, one of the key components in any game is the matchup. That appeared to be the case for the Morris boys golf team.

According to Redskins coach Matt Lafond, his team has traditionally not played well at Cinder Ridge, the site of Monday’s triangular meet between Morris, Seneca and host Coal City.

Although the Redskins came away with a winning score of 165, they believed it wasn’t what they were capable of.

“You can ask any guy on this team,” Lafond said. “And they will tell you that they didn’t shoot what they were looking to shoot today. But what they did do was beat the other people in their group and did what they could to put the team in the best position to win.”

Nick McPherson, Nick Bonomo and Jake Hulbert each shot 41 for the Redskins, while Jack Galloway rounded out the scorecard with a round of 42. Matt Dinelli shot 52 and Dylan Callahan shot 55 as well.

For McPherson, who finished tied for second over the summer at the Joliet Park District Junior Golf Tournament, held at Inwood, it was a day to get through and move on.

“I guess I did all right,” he said. “I don’t feel like I hit that many real good shots. My driver wasn’t very good and it felt like I was just scrambling all day. I didn’t hit a lot of greens and didn’t make many putts.

But a day like this can be good.

Not everything is going to be on the short grass all the time.

“It’s fun to end up with the bragging rights among these schools that are so close to us, though. I know most of the guys on both teams and work with them over the summer, so it was a fun match that way.”

While the top three of McPherson, Bonomo and Hulbert have been consistently near the top of every match so far this season, Lafond was happy to see sophomore Galloway step up and contribute to the team score.

LISLE – The Morris girls volleyball team saw stiff competition at the Benet Invitational over the weekend and finished with a 1-4 record.

During Friday’s pool play, Morris (2-5) lost to Hindsale Central, 27-25, 25-22, before falling to eventual tournament champ York, 25-17, 25-14.

The Redskins then defeated Lincoln-Way Central, 25-16, 2325, 25-15, to finish the day.

On Saturday, Morris dropped a 25-13, 25-22 decision to West Aurora before falling to Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival DeKalb, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13.

“Overall, this was a tough tournament, and we knew that going in,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “But it was nice to play some of the bigger schools and see that we could compete and hang in there with them.

It’s still early in the season, and we have time to make

some adjustments before we get into our conference play.

“I think this tournament has definitely helped see exactly where we stand and what we need to work on.”

Kaylin Korte had 43 kills, 26 digs and six aces for the Redskins during the tournament, while Janelle Brehm had 30 kills, 29 digs and seven aces. Jasmine Cook had 15 digs, while Ashley Hood had 40 assists and five aces, and Addison Polite had 29 assists and two aces.

Serena Freshman Tournament: Seneca went 3-0 in pool

play, defeating Plano, 25-7, 25-11; LaSalle-Peru, 25-14, 259; and Hinckley-Big Rock, 2513, 25-9, before downing La Moille, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11 to win the championship. Grace Alley led Seneca with 13 kills and eight blocks in the tournament, while Alyssa Binion had seven kills and six aces and Kylie Windsor had 10 assists.

ate up the clock in the first quarter. Morris had the ball on the six-yard line and turned the ball over. The Morris defense forced a fumble on the next play to get the ball back, as Trevor Tanke recovered the fumble for Morris. Tyler Petty then scored on a six-yard touchdown run.

The defense forced another fumble on the next possession, recovered by Denver Vandover. Vandover later found the end zone on a seven-yard touchdown run as the Redskins took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Kam Dransfeldt scored on a six-yard TD run to make the score 21-0 early in the fourth quarter. Nathan Korte, Dylan Swartz, Joey Lyle, Kaden Laurie and Noah McCorkhill did a great job of making holes for the running backs for the Redskins.

Tomasik nabs first win at Grundy County Speedway SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Scott Tomasik called it “pretty eventful.”

By any description, the late-season partnership between Tomasik and the Tony D’Ambrose-owned T1 Racing team was a success.

In only his second night out, Tomasik found his way into victory lane Friday at Grundy County Speedway, outdueling short track master Larry Schuler in the 30-lap late-model feature.

The 28-year-old from India-

napolis won in dramatic fashion, passing Schuler with only one lap remaining and prevailing by 0.477 seconds.

Tomasik had a fourth-place finish in his Grundy debut the week before and finished second in the late-model main Aug. 22 at Illiana Speedway.

Billy Knippenberg jumped from the front row into an early lead. He was able to hold off James Gregait, but on Lap 17, Schuler was able to ease by, taking Tomasik with him.

With five laps remaining, a wreck in Turns 1 and 2 took

out, among others, points leader Eddie Hoffman. Hoffman briefly went to the pits for repairs and returned to finish ninth.

On the green, Tomasik hovered behind Schuler until one lap remained. Tomasik then went to the high side, and when Schuler moved up to block he dove to the bottom and made the winning pass.

John Nutley was third, followed by Knippenberg, Gregait and Nathan Kelly.

victory of the season, taking the lead on Lap 7 from Craig Matteson. Points leader Christy Penrod stayed glued to his bumper, and was within 0.166 at the finish. Seth Blommaert was third, ahead of heat winner Cheryl Hryn and Tim Stewart.

With her second-place finish, Penrod added to her division lead over Hryn, which was at 13 points going into the night. Penrod still is looking for her first victory, but has been a runner-up seven times.

For the last seven columns, we have been looking at elimination and endplay.

Declarer draws trumps, keeping at least one in each hand to benefit from a ruff-and-sluff, and eliminates all of his cards in two side suits.

Then he endplays an opponent, ideally to gain a trick, but at the worst to break even.

Occasionally, though, declarer can only partially achieve the desired end-position. Then he needs to get lucky.

In this deal, South is in six spades.

West leads the heart queen. South wins with his ace and cashes his spade ace, but an easy contract suddenly turns tough when West discards a heart.

How might declarer avoiding losing a trick in each major suit?

After North made a game-invitational limit raise, South sensibly bid what he thought he could make. Why give the defenders extra information?

South has to hope that East has at most two hearts.

Declarer plays a spade to dummy’s king and eliminates the minors, ruffing dummy’s third card in each suit.

Then he cashes the heart king before exiting with a trump.

Here, East must lead a minor-suit card. South sluffs his last heart and ruffs in the dummy – or vice versa.

This is called a partial elimination.

Woman becoming nun needs friend’s interest, not concern Dear Abby: I was best friends with “Joanne” after we met in middle school. She comes from a conservative Christian family and has three successful siblings.

This has made her quirky, media-driven pursuits and city life a disappointment to her family. When we were teens and she learned that I was a straight ally for gay rights, she came out to me as a lesbian, but for years only I and a few close friends knew.

Once she was an adult and her family found out, they practically disowned her and made their disapproval and “shame” very clear. Unfortunately, due to some family problems of my own, I moved away, and we communicated

with her decision because it means she will never date another woman or be a part of “that lifestyle.”

I know Joanne is an adult and these choices are hers to make, but I’m afraid she is being guilted into a life she will ultimately regret. How do I express my concerns to her without being offensive?

press your concerns,” I think you should have enough respect for your friend’s intelligence to ask her what has prompted this life-changing decision, and what it will entail.

Will she be joining an order that wears a habit? (Not all nuns do anymore.) Will

she be taking a vow of silence and shutting herself off from the world for a life of prayer and contemplation, or will she be working to help underprivileged communities?

Does she plan to remain in the United States, or join an order like Mother Teresa’s in some other country?

If you show an interest rather than “concern,” I’m sure she will be glad to answer any questions you may have without becoming offended.
