MORRIS – Families are invited to attend State Sen. Sue Rezin and state Rep. John Anthony’s Children’s Health and Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 16 at Saratoga Elementary School, 4040 N. Division St., Morris.

The event will feature state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations and businesses covering a wide range of educational, health, child care, recreational and community services for families and children, according to a news release.

Admission to the event is free with complimentary refreshments and giveaways provided.

Information will be available on topics such as cyberbullying, fire safety, bicycle safety, after-school programs, day care, nutrition, internet safety and volunteer opportunities.

“This is a wonderful event filled with activities and learning opportunities for families,” Rezin, R-Morris, said in the release.”My family and my kids are the most important things in my life, so I’m glad we can host this type of event to help us all come together.”

Demonstrations at the event include Chang Lee’s Taekwondo Martial Arts, Donna Mueller’s School of Dance and the Traveling World of Reptiles Show. The Touch-A-Truck exhibit featuring over 20 trucks and a medical helicopter also will be in the parking lot.

“As a father of four young

and organizations in our community who offer programs and services that help kids grow, learn and explore new adventures,” Anthony, R-Plainfield, said in the release. “This event showcases the tremendous local resources and activities available to kids right here in our own backyard.

Rezin appointed Senate Republican whip

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, has appointed state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, to the position of Senate Republican whip.

“Sen. Rezin brings tremendous energy, fresh ideas and forward-thinking to her new role,” Radogno said in a news release.

“Together our focus remains on building a bigger and stronger Caucus while working to improve Illinois for all its citizens.”

Rezin said she was “truly thrilled” to take on the new role, and thanked Radogno for the opportunity.

“I believe our team can and will make an immediate and positive impact on this state for all of its residents,” Rezin said in the news release.

Support group for women with cancer to meet

MORRIS – A support group for women undergoing cancer treatment is offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Radiation Therapy Center of Morris Hospital, 1600 W. Route 6, Morris.

The Radiation Therapy Center of Morris Hospital is offering “Look Good … Feel Better,” a free program for women undergoing cancer treatment. During the program, trained, volunteer cosmetologists will teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.

Free cosmetic kits are provided to participants, and women also will learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves and other accessories. Register online at www.morrishospital.org/events, or call the Radiation Therapy Center of Morris Hospital at 815364-8915.

MORRIS – The Morris Theatre Guild Inc., 516 W. Illinois Ave., Morris, will hold open auditions for its fall production of Neil Simon’s comedy, “God’s Favorite.”

Auditions will be at 7 p.m. Sept.

3 and 4.

Auditions will take the form of cold readings, therefore, no special preparations are necessary. You need not be a member of the Morris Theatre Guild to audition, however, you must be age 18 or older.

Five adult males and three adult females are needed.

The play tells the comedic story of successful Long Island businessman Joe Benjamin as a modern-day ‘Job’ with a demanding wife, ungrateful children and wise-cracking household employees. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any worse, he is visited by Sidney Lipton – a messenger from God with a mission to test Joe’s faith and report back to “the Boss.”

God’s Favorite opens Nov. 7 at the Morris Theatre Guild.

Additional performances will be held Nov, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. All Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and both Sunday matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A yip, a yap, and an occasional growl was heard as four legged patrons of Clayton’s Tap greeted one another in the back room during the August Yappy Hour sponsored by Bonnie Latta with Bone-ifide Care and Sara Martinez of Blackbird’s Bowl.

“We started Yappy Hour as a twice a year event for people to come out and bring their dogs,” Latta said. “It was so popular that people asked us to hold in once a month, so this is our first year doing it ever month.”

Latta said the event continues to be popular with both the dogs and their owners who come out the second Thursday every month to socialize with each other.

“It’s good for Jack [a sevenmonth-old rottweiler] to socialize with other dogs,” Lisa Smyk said. “He plays well with others because of this type of event.”

Jean Vilt of Morris comes with her mixed-breed dog, Tucker, not just for Tucker’s socialization but also her own.

“Friends come with dogs, and he likes it here,” she said.

Coal City school district, union reach agreement

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City’s school board reached a fouryear collective bargaining agreement with its union, the Coal City Community Unit Education Association.

The Coal City Community Unit School District 1 Board approved, 5-0, the agreement Wednesday night. Ken Miller abstained and Jeff Emerson was absent.

Miller’s wife is a part-time teacher in the district, meaning he would face a conflict of interest on the teacher contract vote.

“I think it’s mutually beneficial, which is a good outcome when in negotiations,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said.

The current contract was set to expire Aug. 13, the day students return to school.

Bugg said the goal was to come to an agreement before the

start of school.

Jane Swinney, union president for the Coal City Community Unit Education Association, said she thinks it’s the best deal the teachers could get in this economy. The teachers’ union approved the contract as well.

The board entered collective bargaining knowing it needed to change the current health insurance plan to stay fiscally stable.

With the current health plan, the district was spending about $2.5 million per year, with projected increases annually of at least 10 percent. The board believed that increase of about $250,000 a year was not sustainable.

As a result of the collective bargaining process, the district will offer its employees a high deductible health plan with a health savings account option. The new plan contains a single deductible of $1,250

and a family deductible of $2,500. The coverage will remain the same.

Bugg said employees will have the option of contributing to their health savings account on a pretax basis to help offset higher deductible costs.

The change will save the district nearly $500,000 annually, as well as a 3 to 5 percent increase annually, versus the 10 percent projected with the old plan.

To facilitate the change in health insurance, the board agreed to provide the union with an additional first-year salary increase equal to the amount the board saved in union member insurance costs.

With the sick leave bank, employees who participate will put two days worth of sick leave into a pool, with further contributions later. If someone has a catastrophic illness, they can use days from the pool once their sick days run out.

“We’ve been trying to get this into the contract for some time,” Swinney said, “We’ve had teachers who had cancer or were sick and other teachers called to ask if they could donate their sick days and it wasn’t allowed. Now there will be a pool of sick days to use.”

She said the sick day bank will be governed by the association, not the district.

Of the $480,000 the district saved, the union membership accounted for about $300,000 of that savings. The board has agreed to move that expenditure from benefits to base salary in the first year of the agreement. This increase represents a 3.4 percent increase to the base in fiscal 2015.

The contract provides other additional increases to the base salary. In 2015, teachers will see an additional 2.6 percent raise and one percent in 2016. In 2017, they will see a 2.1 percent increase and in 2018 a 2.2 percent increase.

6 Grundy Republicans nominate Minooka

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Central Committee has nominated David Nelson of Minooka to replace former Grundy County Board member Teryl Lundeen, who resigned from the board in June.

According to Republican Central Committee Chairman Mike Mattingly, committee members from District 2 selected Nelson after much discussion about who should be recommended for the position.

Since Lundeen was a Republican, she had to be replaced by another Republican from District 2.

Lundeen resigned after the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office investigated her residency following speculation that she was no longer living in Grundy County.

After investigating, Helland’s office found Lundeen

was likely a Will County resident for part of her term, but also determined her residency arrangement was entirely legal based on an Illinois Supreme Court decision.

Mattingly said members had two major reasons for choosing Nelson to fill Lundeen’s seat.

“One, David ran in the Republican primary in March and he was the highest vote-getter in the primary.

Two, he has a business background,” Mattingly said.

Nelson has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in business administration.

“We like his business experience and think that would be beneficial to the county,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly said Nelson is not commenting publicly about his selection until he is officially accepted by the County Board.

Nelson awaits formal approval from Grundy County

Board Chairman Ron Severson and the rest of the County Board, which retains the power to appoint new board members.

They will vote on Nelson’s appointment Tuesday at the Grundy County Board’s August meeting.

Severson said he expects the vote to go smoothly.

“I don’t think there will be any problems,” Severson said.

“The board has the power to say no to ratification, but I don’t think there will be any issues.”

By law, the position must be included in the November general election, since Lundeen completed less than half of her term.

If approved, Nelson will serve for a brief period of about two months before facing an election.

The winner of the November election will serve until the expiration of Lundeen’s term in 2016.

The new rules are meant to further protect consumers from issues like unlimited loan rollovers, which involves taking out a new loan to cover expenses from a previous loan.

According to information from the Attorney General’s office, certain payday loans can legally reach an annual interest rate of 400 percent.

“What was happening is people would take out loans, then go back in and renegotiate to take out more money to pay back the first loan – and so all of the interest kept adding on and on and on,” Hofer said.

“What we tried to do is rewrite [the acts], so there was a realistic opportunity for the loan to be repaid.”

But the laws don’t always protect consumers who are already trapped in a bad loan.

When places like the Cash Store and other payday loan services violate the law – issuing loans that are difficult to repay on time – the lender is fined, but the borrower “unfortunately has no recourse,” Hofer said.

Payday loan borrowers are eligible for an interest-free repayment program, upon request, but other cash install-

ment loans are not eligible for the program, according to the Attorney General’s office.

Because of this, IDFPR encourages consumers to treat payday loans as an absolute last resort, after exhausting all other options.

Locally, nonprofits like We Care of Grundy County offer rent and food assistance to those with financial emergencies.

We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said the organization has helped individuals who have become bogged down by payday loans, and typically encourage all of their clients to avoid the loans, even as a last resort.

“We always counsel people away from them, because they are really dangerous,” Gaska said.

However, in some instances, cash advance services can be useful for those with nowhere else to turn.

Gaska commended the Morris Cash Store for being the only place locally that will process electric and gas bills for clients in danger of having their utilities shut off.

“We recognize that emergencies happen,” Hofer said.

“But before they take out a loan from a consumer installment store or payday lending store, they should try every other option.”

MORRIS – Payday loan providers owned by the company Cottonwood Financial Illinois have violated state law more than 90 times since March, and the Morris Cash Store was one of them.

The Morris store racked up $7,000 in fines within three months for committing a handful of violations to the Consumer Installment Loan Act and Payday Loan Reform Act. These acts establish rules and regulations meant to protect borrowers from high interest rates that can create a cycle of debt.

The Cash Store, on Route 6, provides various cash loans for those who need to finance unexpected, emergency expenses.

The store was issued four separate violations: scheduling a monthly payment exceeding 50 percent of a borrower’s monthly income; failing to accurately determine if a borrower was eligible for a loan; issuing a payday loan exceeding 22.5 percent of a borrower’s monthly income; and failing to properly enter a loan into the database on the day it was made.

The infractions were issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and were listed in the department’s monthly disciplinary reports.

Managers of the Cash Store in Morris referred requests for comment to Cottonwood Financial Illinois headquarters, which did not return phone calls.

Sue Hofer, spokeswoman for IDFPR, said the department handles these violations on a case by case basis. Ultimately, they want to help a business correct its issues, not force owners to close the doors.

“Our goal is to get businesses into compliance, not shut them down,” Hofer said.

Fifth person dies from I-55 crash in Channahon Township

CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – A husband and father who died Wednesday is the fifth person to have been killed as a result of the July 21 collision of a semitrailer and three vehicles on Interstate 55 in Channahon Township.

Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 6:36 p.m.

Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He was involved in the first of two collisions July 21 on I-55 near Arsenal Road in the construction zone near the Des Plaines River bridge, which initially left four people – three women and a child – dead.

Osburn was in the same car as his wife, Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and his daughter, Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana, when a semitrailer driver rear-ended three vehicles that had backed up in the northbound lanes near Arsenal Road, state police confirmed Thursday.

Kimberly and Piper Britton died at the scene along with Vicky L. Palacios, 54, of Coal City and Ulrike P. Blopleh, 48, of Channahon. Palacios and Blopleh were in separate cars.

A second collision happened at 2:33 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Route 6 when one semitrailer rear-ended another. Killed in that accident was Deividas Mockus, 41, of Darien, who was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m. at Presence Saint Jo-

seph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The same construction zone was the site of 12 crashes with injuries and two fatalities in 2013. The I-55 construction has reduced traffic down to one lane each way for the past two summer construction seasons.

The semitrailer driver in the first fatal crash, Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, is being held at the Will County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He was charged with two Class 4 felonies that included falsifying a log book and failing to maintain a log book.

Espinal-Quiroz is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for an arraignment.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jim Long said the day after the collision that other charges, including reckless homicide, are a possibility as state police continue to investigate the crash. Police also cited Espinal-Quiroz for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney Office, said no new charges had been filed as of Thursday and the investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Espinal-Quiroz allegedly falsified entries in his logbook to make it appear he was behind the wheel for a shorter period of time than allowed by federal law. He told officers at the scene he started work at 2:30 a.m.

“The equipment that is in place is for a low to medium density access, although it’s laid out in a high density layout,” Lemmy told the committee. “It’s not made to handle the number of devices you will have.”

Lemmy also told the committee it should consider upgrading the district’s Internet provider from a residential grade broadband to a fiber optic business line to handle the amount of traffic it will see.

current open IT position.

The company would provide someone on-site at the schools two or three days a week, in addition to providing an entire tech team to offer Web-based help, a help desk, and education for teachers who want to learn more about technology, including adding video to their teaching.

“In the end, we come in, go through what is going on and are able to cut from your IT cost more than what our fee is,” Lemmy said. “The cost is about the same as one person, but you get a whole team.”

The district’s Committee of the Whole does not vote on matters presented. Any formal decisions need to be made by the full school board at a regular scheduled meeting.

LISBON – Area friends are invited to share in a farewell open house for Pastor Steve and Stephanie Lombardo from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Pastor Steve began his ministry at West Lisbon Church in September 2005 after serving as a church planter in Virginia.

In July, the Lombardo family accepted a call to serve at the Village Bible Church in Sugar Grove as pastor of community life.

West Lisbon Church is on Joliet Road, 2∏ miles west of the Lisbon Firehouse.

Morris church to hold Back to School Fun Fair

The sixth annual Back to School Fun Fair has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. This year’s location will be in downtown

Morris at 118 E. Jefferson St. The street will be blocked off for the fun and games.

This free event is designed for youngsters in kindergarten through fifth grade and will be a fun time of entertainment with a bounce house, games, face painting, food and more.

This year’s fair, which is free, will provide a fun atmosphere for all ages. All youths will receive a back to school bag with supplies.

Living Water’s Praise Team will offer live music from today’s Christian artists throughout the event.

Living Water Church of the Nazarene will host this community event. Join them on Sundays at 10:45 a.m. at 118 E. Jefferson St., Morris.

Henry, Perry hope to improve Central Michigan’s fortunes

– In a sport that is dominated by change, during the 2013 football season, one thing was a constant for the Central Michigan University football team.

Morris graduate Kevin Henry was the starter at right tackle.

Henry, listed at 6-foot-4 and 306 pounds, helped guide the Chippewas to a 6-6 record, including a 5-3 finish in the Jeff Perry Mid-American Conference.

However, Central Michigan was just 2-3 against MAC West opponents.

When Henry stepped into the starting role, he had sizeable shoes to fill. The Chippewas had lost the services of No. 1 overall NFL draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs Eric Fisher at left tackle, as well as Darren Keyton, who started 13 games at right guard in 2012.

With this being his second year in the starting lineup, he hopes to leave a similar impression. But, he knows the big-picture goal starts with doing the little things right first.

And they are things that he has heard from his days as a member of the Morris Redskins, when he was an Illinois High School Football Coaches’ Association Class 4A all-state honoree.

The Chippewas averaged 23.2 points a game last year, averaging 132.8 rushing yards and 208.3 passing yards. They ranked ninth in the MAC in total offense and seventh in scoring offense.

“Always, when I was behind those guys [Fisher and Keyton], I would think that my time would come if I would keep working hard, and I was given the opportunity,” Henry said. “I thought I played pretty well, for the most part. I made a few mistakes here and there, but overall, it was a really good season for me. We were able to get to six wins and played pretty well for most of the year. It was a good experience.”

Henry’s attitude when he was first moved from defense to offense helped sell Cummings that he could one day become a first-stringer.

“We were down a couple offensive linemen when he ar-

rived. We were kind of gutted on the offensive line,” Cummings said. “I went to Kevin and said, ‘Would you mind moving?’ I can still remember him nodding his head and saying, ‘Sure,’ without a moment’s hesitation. Anybody that unselfish, that stays selfless and keeps it about the team, they can play anywhere.”

After redshirting in his

freshman season (2010), Henry started the final four games of the year at right tackle in 2011 as a part of an offensive line that allowed just 17 sacks in 12 games. He played in all 12 of the Chippewas’ games in 2012, including a start at left tackle against UMass, a game in which CMU scored 42 points and got its sixth win of the season.

During practice this season, Henry may be called upon to block a familiar face. His former teammate in high school, Jeff Perry, will be on the Chippewas defense as a linebacker.

Perry, listed at 6-foot-2 inches and 227 pounds, was a two-way standout as a linebacker and running back for Morris. He was redshirted last season, but is back on the field this year.

“I beat dad,” Shane told his mother. “Now Brock has to beat me.”

The narrow passageway that leads up the 17 carpeted steps connecting the first and second floors of Henry and Venita Vereen’s home wasn’t constructed with two-wide racing in mind.

On almost a daily basis, however, the couple’s sons would tear up the stairs, one as intent on beating his brother to the top as the other. The foot races were rarely planned, instigated instead by something as simple as one of the boys starting to make his way toward the bottom of the stairwell or, God forbid, both arriving at the same time.

Either way, proceeding normally was never an option.

Because the path upward was so tight, the faster brother’s progress would be impeded by an ankle tackle from behind, causing a loud commotion. Venita Vereen would shake her head, wondering if her pleas for Shane and Brock Vereen to call a truce would ever be heeded.

“I was always on them, but it didn’t matter. It didn’t stop them,” she says. “It didn’t stop them one bit.”

It still hasn’t.

Ask Shane Vereen, a fourthyear New England Patriots running back, if his younger brother has ever beaten him in anything and he laughs, insisting he has always maintained the upper hand.

Take time to take in the outdoors world School is about to start. For most people, they either love it or hate it. No matter how you feel though the start of a new school year means one thing – a hectic schedule. Even if you have no kids getting ready to hit the books, it seems like the whole world around you speeds up and everything ratchets up a notch.

Just the other night, my wife and I were feeling the stress. We decided to take a little cruise on the lake and just relax. Our oldest son joined us. We slipped the motor into gear and instead of screaming across the water, we just idled.

It is very relaxing to watch the houses go by and hear the waves lap against the hull.

We headed down a part of the lake that Luke thought maybe he had never seen. I was sure that he had been there, but

I wanted to appease his curiosity anyway.

The long narrow channel lay before us like a tunnel. The other side was barely visible when we started down this runway-like passage. The overhanging brush and trees closed us in to the point where the sky was barely visible. It truly felt like we had left the world we knew and entered a magical place.

About halfway down, the channel opened up just slightly.

Luke noticed it first, “Look.” I saw that he was pointing to his right. The scene that unfolded before me was something only nature can choreograph.

The sun, which was previously blocked from us by thick flora, was shooting a beam of brilliant yellow evening light to the shoreline next to us. It was coming down with the same

intensity a spotlight would at a concert. In the midst of this lightshow was an open patch of pristine, mowed, well-kept, grass. The brilliant green was framed by a pair of weeping willow trees that created a natural border. The subject of this portrait was a young eightpoint buck in full velvet.

The deer stared at us. It too was curious about what was going on. I felt a little bad that we had just interrupted this deer’s evening meal with my idling motor. Even with this commotion, it didn’t leave.

they confident in who they are?

Are they worried about what Shane meant to our program?’,” Muir said. “But the more you got to know Brock, the more you came to understand that his quietness was kind of an inner strength.

“He was going to blaze his own trail. That was Brock.”

Brock was already a good athlete, something he proved during his Pop Warner football days. He was a good student as well, evidenced by the 4.4 grade-point average he boasted in high school, edging Shane’s 3.8. Brock had all he needed to succeed.

But while Brock and Shane each had their own personalities and style of approaching things, those outside the confines of their family still pushed Brock to match his older brother in everything he did. Brock remained unfazed.

“I don’t think Brock felt the pressure,” Henry Vereen said of his youngest son, whom the former Canadian Football League wide receiver coached in football, basketball and baseball until Brock started middle school. “But I think a lot of people tried to put a lot of that ‘Do what Shane did’ kind of twist onto it.”

Brock became keenly aware what following his brother entailed even before he reached high school. At times, he sensed people expected him to keep up the family’s football identity

after Shane left as Valencia’s most recruited player ever.

Brock garnered only two Division I scholarship offers: Minnesota and Stanford.

Again, outsiders pressured him to choose Stanford, where he could play in the same conference as Shane had. But his parents – both college athletes at UNLV – encouraged Brock to choose his own path, prompting him to choose to play at Minnesota.

“Coming in (to high school) I was definitely in his shadow,” Brock acknowledges. “The comparisons were there, but they weren’t that bad. But thanks to my high school coach, my parents and my friends, I was never Shane’s little brother.”

Yet, there were those who kept insisting that would always be the case. Never one to outwardly show any frustration over the comparisons or constantly finishing second to his brother in the foot races and video game battles at home, Brock let football speak for him.

“I think that’s why Brock hits so hard on that football field – he’s making up for when he was a child,” Venita says, laughing. “I think that’s why he’s such a harder hitter. He had to be.”

Shane was always the star – first as a record-breaking running back at Valencia High School in greater Los Angeles and then at Cal-Berkeley, where he became one of the nation’s top rushers as a senior.

Shane – who started on Valencia’s varsity as a sophomore – burst immediately out of the gate. Brock’s development was more drawn out. Shane was outgoing. Brock was reserved, leaving Larry Muir – who coached both brothers at Valencia – to wonder exactly what he had on his hands.

Muir had gotten to know Brock by coaching his older brother. While Shane’s 6,000 rushing yards and 89 touchdowns during his three-year career had left a definite stamp, Muir understood coaching Brock would be different. The fact that Brock kept mainly to himself made communication a challenge, at least initially.

“When you have the quiet ones, you think, ‘OK, what the heck are they thinking? Where are they at with things? Are they intimidated by things? Are

ral color. I don’t know if even the most elaborate camera on earth could capture the same richness that was displayed on this lakeshore. It was truly the hand of God that had painted this picture. All the stress of the day melted away in that one instant.

We continued on our way and finished making a loop at the end of that channel and came back. When we made our return trip past that same location, the deer was gone. The majestic rays of sunshine were also absent. The entire scene was still beautiful, but it lacked the same majesty that it did just moments before. That’s how fleeting those moments can be.

If you don’t look for them, if you don’t keep your eyes open, you may miss them entirely.

For just a moment, I wondered if it had even really happened.

Taking the time to go for a walk, a bike ride, or a simple cruise in a boat, often means that your path will intersect with something from nature that you could never predict.

You can’t force it to happen. It just does happen.

All the way back to the dock, a new perspective set it. A perspective that once again aligned the things that are really most important. It is funny how often, as individuals, we need those little moments of therapy.

Thank goodness that we have all been blessed with a natural world that is constant, always there, and ready to help us. We just need to take the time to see what is around us.

the Bears, Shane made certain Brock knew if he needed anything, just to call. Shane didn’t want to be overbearing and wanted Brock to learn on his own. But Shane also made sure his younger brother understood an important nugget of truth as he started offseason workouts.

“I’ve just tried to tell him to keep his mouth shut, do what’s asked of you and go out there and try to do the best you can every day,” Shane says. “That’s pretty much all a rookie really needs to know.”

For Brock, who spent the offseason working with defensive coordinator Mel Tucker’s firstteam unit while incumbent starting safety Chris Conte recovers from offseason shoulder

surgery, the learning curve has been steep.

To make things easier, Brock spoke almost daily with his older brother. Brock was able to gain a different perspective from Shane, who, like Henry Vereen, had never coddled Brock. Having a guide to see Brock through the early stages of his NFL career has been invaluable.

“I don’t see myself at this level right now without [Shane] mentoring me along the way,” Brock said. “It’s weird to have a role model on a team you’re going to get to play against, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

As much as he has impressed Tucker and defensive backs coach Jon Hoke during the offseason, Brock Vereen’s intensive training remains in front of him. During OTAs and a three-day minicamp, he proved himself to be an intelligent decision maker blessed with good natural instincts.

Much of the learning has come on the fly, keeping Vereen focused on putting new information into practice. As promising as Vereen has looked, it is difficult for his coaches to gauge how NFL-ready the rookie really is.

“Football is a pad game; it’s a violent game,” Hoke said. “[In the offseason], all you’re doing is looking at their movement, seeing how much they pick up the scheme, how much they understand – that’s it.

“It’s not a true indication – especially with young players – how well they’re going to play pro football.”

Vereen realizes although he has passed an early test, much more awaits him. At some point, Conte will return and will be given the opportunity to compete for the same starting job many have already penciled Vereen in for. Vereen can’t afford to take such prognostications seriously, knowing as a rookie, he still lacks much of the knowledge and game experience many of his teammates possess.

“Some of these vets have been here for 10 years, 11 years, and I’m chasing that,” he says.

“So I think you definitely have to put yourself in a mindset that you’re behind and you’re always in catch-up mode.”

That’s where Brock’s experience shadowing his brother will pay off.

Before the rookies left, quarterback Jay Cutler reminded them they are no longer in college and can’t consider the summer as a chance to get away and relax. How rookies adjust to the change will go a long way in determining how much time they see once the season begins. Shane, for one, is confident his brother will be up for the challenge.

“He knows he’s a rookie and he knows he’s got a long, long way to go and a long road in front of him,” Shane said. “He may not be ready right now, but he will be eventually. I’ve

got 110 percent confidence that he’ll be ready one day.”

••• Venita Vereen dreads Oct. 26 – the day in Week 8 of th regular season when the Bears and Patriots meet in New England.

When friends bring up the game, she quickly changes the subject.

By then, Brock Vereen will have reached the midpoint of his rookie season. Despite being a veteran, Shane Vereen has difficulty making the nationally televised meeting just another game, considering the ties it has not only to his younger brother, but to his parents.

“I think it will be both stressful and the best game they’ve ever seen,” Shane says.

“I’m trying to figure out who is rooting for me and who is rooting for him. But I think it will be fun. Not too many parents get to look out and see both their kids on the same field at the same time.”

Henry Vereen won’t allow himself to think too much about the game. Still, he is proud of what his boys have achieved and with the way Shane and Brock have managed to follow different paths to reach the NFL. “I thought Brock worked a little bit harder to get where he’s at than Shane did, but that’s just how things go sometimes,” Henry says. “But I’m just happy for them.”

Brock and Shane discuss the game at least twice a week.

Each time a bit of “friendly fire” – as Venita calls it – is exchanged. Shane reminds his younger brother how he has never beaten him at anything, and their first NFL meeting will be no different. Brock fires back, again finding a way to hold his own like he always has.

“I don’t think the trash talk will ever end,” Brock says.

Still, the boys’ mother wishes things could be different. She would feel better if both of her sons played on the same side of the ball. But because they don’t and because she vividly remembers those daily foot races up the stairs, she cringes to think of her boys being forced to go head-to-head.

Always the peacemaker, Venita has already asked Shane to let Brock tackle him. She has also requested Brock allow Shane score a touchdown. Deep down, she knows her boys aren’t about to comply with her wishes.

CIA torture report needs to be released More than a year and a half ago, the Senate Intelligence Committee approved a voluminous report on the CIA’s detention and interrogation of suspected terrorists after 9/11. Those who have read the report say it concludes that the agency used brutal and sometimes unauthorized interrogation techniques, misled policymakers and the public, and sought to undermine congressional oversight. It also reportedly rejects the idea that waterboarding and other “enhanced interrogation techniques” (a euphemism for torture) produced information vital to preventing terrorist attacks.

The public has been unable to evaluate the committee’s conclusions – or complaints by Republicans and the CIA that the report is flawed – but that was supposed to change this month with the release of a 480-page executive summary and a list of findings. Now, however, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the committee chairwoman, is delaying publication of the document “until further notice” while the committee studies “significant redactions” made by the Obama administration.

Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper said the redactions were necessary to protect “sensitive classified information” and that half of the redactions were in the footnotes. He insisted that “the declassified document delivered to the committee will provide the public with a full view of the committee’s report on the detention and interrogation program.”

It’s understandable if the public doesn’t take Clapper’s

assurances at face value.

After all, he is the official who answered “No, sir” when a senator asked him in March 2013 whether the National Security Agency collected data on “millions or hundreds of millions of Americans.” A few months later, thanks to revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, Americans learned the government had been “bulk collecting” information about telephone calls.

As for the CIA, only last week Director John Brennan apologized to the Senate Intelligence Committee after the agency’s inspector general concluded that CIA officials had improperly searched computers being used by committee staffers working on the detention and interrogation report.

Given that, Americans will wonder if redactions made in the executive summary were designed to protect sources and methods or to spare the CIA from further embarrassment.

On Tuesday, Feinstein said the redactions “eliminate or obscure key facts that support the report’s findings and conclusion,” and sent a letter to President Obama proposing changes that she said would be necessary if the document were to be released. Obama, who acknowledged last week that “we tortured some folks” and that we “did some things that were contrary to our values,” should respond positively.

The summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee report may be the best available account of how America lost its way. It has been kept from the public for too long.

Pope Francis continuing church revival From day one in the Pope Francis era, the so-called insiders who do so much to shape public opinion have said “conservatives” – inside the Vatican and outside – were grumbling about this shepherd’s unorthodox style.

That is certainly true in some corners of the church, noted Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, a prominent voice on matters of doctrine and public life.

The famous Catholic writer G.K. Chesterton once noted that “every age gets the saint it needs. Not the saint people want, but the saint they need – the saint who’s the medicine for their illness. The same may be true of popes,” said Chaput in a July 26 speech at the Napa Institute in California.

“John Paul II revived the spirit of a church that felt fractured, and even irrelevant. ... Benedict revived the mind of a church that felt, even after John Paul II’s intellectual leadership, outgunned by the world in the public square. Also, it’s crucial for news consumers – Catholics included – to understand that it’s hard to accurately discuss centuries of doctrine and faith while using political terms like “conservative” and “liberal.” Chaput stressed that people should read the pope’s writings and sermons and hear what he is saying, unfiltered.

They will find that political language of this kind tends to “divide what shouldn’t be divided,” said the archbishop.

“Service to the oppressed and service to the family; defense of the weak and defense of the unborn child; belief in the value of business and belief in restraints on predatory business practices – all these things spring from the same Catholic commitment to human dignity.

‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’: Merely amiable

By MARK JENKINS Special to The Washington Post French and Indian restaurants stage a culinary showdown in “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” but the result is neither rich nor spicy. This rom-com-drama is merely amiable, even when the two central couples pretend to be bristlingly incompatible.

The movie is essentially a return to “Chocolat,” director Lasse Hallstrom’s 2000 tale of a provincial French town that reacts badly to the arrival of deliciousness. In that story, the intrusion was at least French; in this one, it’s Indian.

The newcomers are led by Papa (veteran Indian actor Om Puri), who decides to stay in the immaculately picturesque village where his family van breaks down. He has five children, but only one matters to the story: Hassan (Manish Dayal), a kitchen savant.

The story is driven by three conflicts, but two are easily resolved and the third is never really explained.

Papa and Hassan’s new eatery sits 100 feet across a rural road from a Michelin-starred landmark run by the imperious Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). She attempts to sabotage the competition, but finds Papa every bit as bull-headed as she is. Indeed, the two widowed restaurateurs seem a natural match.

The very first person the family meets, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), is a stock character in movies about foreigners in the South of France: the young beauty who travels exclusively by bicycle and always wears dresses.

(Put a pair of Levis on Marguerite and she’d curdle like overheated hollandaise.) She and Hassan are clearly meant to mate, but Marguerite is an aspiring chef who’s jealous of his culinary genius.

The other antagonism

is more substantial, which may be why the filmmakers sidestep it. The Indian family was driven from Mumbai by a mob that burned down its restaurant, killing Papa’s wife and the kids’ mother.

But why? The source novel (by Richard C. Morais) acknowledges that Papa and his brood are Muslim, something the movie never mentions.

(The only hints are that Hindus tend not to be named “Hassan,” or to cook veal and beef.)

The script is by Stephen Knight, whose work is usually tougher and tighter. Next to his recent directing debut, “Locke,” this movie looks flabby. Perhaps seeking to retain something of the book’s rhythm, Knight and Hallstrom let a very simple story meander for two hours and include episodes that serve no dramatic purpose. Maybe they hoped the exuberant A.R. Rahman score would keep things moving.

Dayal is bland and Le Bon not much zestier, although both can reasonably blame underwritten parts. Puri and Mirren are lively and well-matched, even if the British actress’ French accent is distracting. As the town’s gourmet mayor, Michel Blanc is a big pleasure in a small role.

But the real stars, of course, are the food and the scenery, both bathed in celestial light. “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is basically a promo reel for small-town France and Gallo-Indian food fusion.

Anyone who requires a more substantial meal should eat before heading to the theater.

• “The Hundred-Foot Journey’ received two out of four stars. The film is rated PG, containing thematic elements, some strong violence, language and brief sensuality.

It’s in English with bits of unsubtitled French and Hindi.

The film runs 122 minutes.

ADVICE Woman treats friend’s kitchen like a buffet Dear Abby: I have a friend who will help herself to anything in my fridge, pantry, etc. without asking. She also will eat most if not all food that’s meant to be shared, such as appetizers and snacks at a social gathering. Once she literally polished off an entire plate of appetizers before my guests arrived and I had nothing to feed them.

After she finishes the food, she often says, “Oh, I was starving!” I find myself hiding food from her when she comes over, or delaying putting treats out for guests until later in the party.

The most recent episode was when I was preparing food for my toddler. While it was cooling on the counter, she helped herself to all of it. She told me afterward she had consumed it.

So you see -- nothing is safe, not even a child’s meal. Abby, how can I tell her what she’s doing is wrong and rude? – Stumped In Studio City, Calif.

Vaginal atrophy is likely cause of post-menopausal bleeding Dear Doctor K: I thought I entered menopause five years ago, but now I seem to be having a period again. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: A woman is considered to be in menopause once it has been one year since her last period. Once menopause begins, vaginal bleeding is not normal.

Post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) can happen for many reasons. It may result from infection or injury. Non-cancerous growths such as polyps and fibroids can cause PMB. So can bleeding disorders or use of blood thinners.

The most worrisome cause of PMB is cancer, especially of the uterus. Cancer can usually be ruled out with a biopsy and a pelvic ultrasound. But if you do have cancer or pre-cancer of the uterus, it’s very important to make the diagnosis – and begin treatment – as early as possible.

If the bleeding is from your vaginal walls, the likely cause is vaginal atrophy. This accounts for about half of the cases of PMB. Vaginal atrophy develops during menopause, when age-re-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff lated changes cause the ovaries to make less estrogen. Estrogen helps keep vaginal tissues lubricated and healthy. When levels of estrogen are low, vaginal tissue becomes thin, dry and shrunken.

The vagina becomes prone to inflammation and tearing. Vaginal atrophy typically develops slowly.

You may not notice any symptoms until five to 10 years after menopause begins.

You can try a water-soluble vaginal lubricant to relieve vaginal dryness and moisten vaginal tissues. If that doesn’t work, vaginal atrophy estrogen therapy can help. Your doctor may prescribe an estrogen pill, a topical estrogen cream, vaginal suppositories, an estrogen skin patch or a vaginal estrogen ring.

So, schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she needs to identify the source of your

bleeding before you can take the next step. One or more of three diagnostic tests often is ordered: • An endometrial biopsy. A sample of the inner lining of your uterus is taken to look for malignant cells.

• A pelvic ultrasound. This imaging test can look at the thickness of the lining of your uterus, and for non-cancerous growths in the uterus, as well as possible cancers in the ovaries.

• A Pap smear. This test can spot cancer of the cervix, another cause of PMB. Post-menopausal bleeding is one of those symptoms that cause you to worry even though it usually turns out you had nothing to worry about. Because it can indicate cancer, it has to be taken seriously. Fortunately, at the end of the diagnostic evaluation, the news usually is good.

Strive for academic excellence Dr. Wallace: I’m a good student and will graduate next year.

I’m on the debate team, president of the science club, a member of the marching band and a member of the National Honor Society. With participation in these excellent academic groups, hardly anyone knows of my achievements. But everyone on campus knows the football quarterback, the basketball star and the guy who hits the home runs for the baseball team.

It’s almost like our school is more popular for our athletic teams than for our academics.

Our football team won eight games and lost only two. All the kids know this. Our debate team was undefeated and we won a trophy, but no one knows or cares about us.

I know that you are a former high school principal. Did you allow the athletic department to dominate at the expense of the academic program? – Jeremy, Houston, Texas Dear Jeremy: The prime goal for every school, both public and private, must be to provide the best possible academic program and to instill in students a desire to learn to reach their full potential academically.

But extracurricular programs offer students the opportunity to broaden their educational experience. You are a wise young man for participating in these programs.

Athletics are also an important section of the extracurricular program. Athletics not only allow the participants to learn the game and enjoy the competition, but they also help the student body to join

The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit research organization, found that athletics could possibly aid academics. Their study found that schools that have powerful athletic teams generally have math and reading scores equal to schools that are not sports powerhouses.

Team sports are a dominant factor in high school culture, and researchers who have studied student athletes for the past 50 years have found that they generally have higher grades, better attendance and fewer discipline problems than non-athlete students do.

The Brookings report compared scores on state-required reading and math tests in 141 high schools, in 24 states, that excelled in athletics. This report was the first to show that a school’s focus on sports can boost academic achievement school-wide, not just for the athletes.

When I was a high school administrator, I considered academics the prime goal while an extracurricular program was important, but never at the expense of academics.

You are a very bright young man, and I’d like to offer my congratulations on an excellent academic record and wonderful extracurricular activities.

Whenever you can ruff a loser in the shorter trump hand, it is almost certain to be the right line of play. So, South should immediately cash his two top spades and ruff a spade in the dummy – but with which trump?

Here, if South ruffs with dummy’s 10, East overruffs and returns a trump to defeat the contract. Instead, though, declarer ruffs with dummy’s king, returns to his hand with a diamond, and ruffs his last spade with the heart 10. East may overruff, but that is his only trick.
