Flea market’s location discussed

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Junk in the Trunk fundraiser flea market organizers Ken Willis and Carol Posey spoke to the Grundy County Facilities Committee at length Thursday night about hosting their monthly Junk in the Trunk event at the county-owned parking lot between Route 47 and the courthouse.

“The event is the third Sunday of every month,” Willis told the committee. “We’ve always told those that participate that it’s at their own risk, and we always leave the lot cleaner than when we found it.”

market allows people to sell merchandise out of their vehicle trunks for a fee. That fee is then donated to a different charity every month.

A dispute over parking at its previous location in the parking lot between Country Brothers Supply and Wendy’s Restaurant put Willis in the position of having to find a new venue quickly.

Neighboring business owner, Gene Funk of Morris Liquors, threatened to sue if the market continued there because his customers were unhappy they had to park farther from his business because of the market.

County Board member Vicki Geiger said a bigger discussion about allowing the

need to have a discussion that includes that information,” Geiger said. “We have to make sure we are looking at the big picture. We represent the taxpayers.”

Facility chairman Harold Vota said the committee couldn’t simply give the OK without further conversation.

State’s Attorney Jason Helland said a process needs to be in place to make it fair to everyone who might have interest.

Willis and Posey were invited to speak at the Grundy County Board meeting next week when they could present what they would like to do to all the board members during the public comment portion of the meeting.

New law for voter registration will cost Grundy County $35,000 in upgrades

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson will be updating software for the county electronic poll books thanks to an unfunded mandate from the state.

Public Act 98-1171, a 334page law affecting voter laws in Illinois, will require the county to have same-day registration at the polls starting with elections in 2016.

“Originally, the bill would affect counties with a population over 100,000 people and we would not have been affected,” Olson said. “During the second amendment, they changed the verbiage to include counties less than 100,000 who use electronic poll books.”

Olson said in 2013, former clerk Lana Phillips purchased electronic poll books to replace the laptops being used as the equipment got older and needed updating. The electronic poll books allow election officials to process voter information during an election.

Olson said after watching demonstrations, Phillips and her staff, including Olson, saw the advantages to switching to the electronic devices.

“The cost was about the same, but the electronic poll books were much sturdier and came with everything needed to use them,” Olson said.

She said poll judges have loved the new devices and they require less time for the clerk’s office to confirm voting accura-

At the time the poll books were bought, the county opted not to purchase the on-site voter registration portion because it was not interested in offering the service and because it was an added expense the county didn’t need to incur.

With the new law, the clerk’s office will have to spend about $35,000 to upgrade to the software that will allow the county to register voters at every polling location.

Pryor understands the services may be desirable, but said it’s tough to provide services when the county has limited funding to implement the mandates.

“I believe in making it easier for people to vote,” said state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield. “I voted no because I believe it can breed corruption.”

Anthony said before his no vote, he spoke with the clerks in his district and heard an overwhelming “no” from all of the clerks when it came to the

bill.

“I felt it was an unfunded mandate, and I reached out to the clerks who were all against it. It will cost the taxpayers money we don’t have,” Anthony said.

In addition to the cost of the software upgrades, Olson said additional training will be needed for election judges, and she fears it will be difficult to find enough judges to train to use the software. She said historically the clerk’s office has

had a hard time filling the positions without the added technology upgrades.

The process also may slow down lines at the polls as voters will have to be entered manually into the poll books after they register.

She is considering setting up a separate registration table to get the initial paperwork completed. But once people are in line to vote, the election judge will still have to enter the voter manually to ensure the voter is not voting at more than one polling place.

A previous concern of Internet connectivity also is back, according to Olson. When the county used laptops, there were issues connecting to the Internet at some of the polling locations. With the electronic poll books, an Internet connection is not required.

But the new software will require an Internet connection to safeguard against voters registering in more than one location. Olson said that creates additional work for the county IT department, which further drives up the cost.

“They continue to pass laws without a way to fund it and without a way to implement it,” Olson said.

Olson said she is in favor of giving everyone a chance to vote, but feels the provisional voting that was already in place provided that without a large expenditure.

Because prescription medications often end up in young people’s hands and can lead to addiction, anyone with excess, unwanted or expired pill medications can drop them off from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday in the return box at the Coal City Police Department, 545 S. 6 Crest Hill motorcyclist crashes

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – A Crest Hill man operating a motorcycle without a license Wednesday evening fled after crashing his bike off Interstate 80.

State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said troopers were called at about 7 p.m. to the Ridge Road ramp after a silver 2014 Yamaha GZF-R1 crashed.

Witnesses said Arien A. Whitehead, 24, had been traveling west on I-80 when he exited onto the ramp and appeared

to be turning left, according to Rivera.

“He over-corrected and lost control. He told troopers the bike was going to hit the guardrail so he slid it on the ground,” Rivera said.

Whitehead sought a ride from another motorist before fleeing the scene on foot.

“When troopers arrived they tracked him to Ridge and Hope roads where he was laying in a ditch,” Rivera said.

Whitehead was cited for operating a motorcycle without a license and driving without insurance.

Callahan said the program has grown to collect at least 50,000 pills a month. It should increase with another drop box placed in a well-known location.

On average, the pills are collected once a week by staff from the coroner’s office and stored safely until an annual trip to Indianapolis with upward of 1,000 pounds of medication, during which Callahan drops the medicine bag by bag in an incinerator at the ultra-secure Covanta Secure Services Inc. “No one else touches the medications but us,” Callahan

“We do death investigations of young people where text messages reveal they were looking for prescription medications,” Callahan said.

The elderly may die, leaving behind extra medicine, while others find out they’re allergic to a medication and don’t dispose of the pills. And when people throw out medications in the garbage or toilet, it can still be harmful, Callahan said.

“Studies indicate that medications end up in our discharge water,” Callahan said. “Then you have rural areas with well water and septic tanks. … You have to be proactive to clean up the environment.”

There also is a sharps container at the Coal City department where the public can submit used hypodermic syringes for proper disposal.

Comic actor George Cole dies

By DANICA KIRKA The Associated Press LONDON – George Cole, the British actor best known for playing conman Arthur Daley on the long-running TV series “Minder,” has died.

He was 90.

Cole’s career spanned more than 70 years from his first stage appearance in 1939 and included more than 40 films, including “Cleopatra,” with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. From 1979 to 1994, he starred as cigar-smoking, Jaguar-driving Arthur Daley on ITV’s “Minder.”

Set in London’s criminal underworld, “Minder” followed the adventures of a small-time crook always on

the lookout for his next dodgy deal. Cole’s shifty but ambitious character captured the money-conscious spirit of Britain in the 1980s, and he was twice nominated for best actor by the British Academy of Film and Television.

Cole was surrounded by his family when he died Wednesday at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after a short illness, said agent Derek Webster, who represents Cole’s “Minder” co-star Dennis Waterman.

Born in south London, Cole started working when he was 14, appearing in the chorus of “White Horse Inn” in 1939.

He starred with Alastair Sim in the 1941 film “Cottage to Let,” in which he played a re-

sourceful evacuee from wartime London who unmasks a spy. Sim, an older actor with an established career, took him under his wing and the pair appeared together in several films, including the 1951 version of “A Christmas Carol.”

Cole also appeared in some 30 plays and numerous television series, including “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” in the United States.

Tributes poured in Thursday, including one from Tony Hall, the director general of the BBC. “George Cole was a wonderful actor and he has a very special place in the public’s affection,” he said. “He will be greatly missed.”

Former basketball star John Rudometkin dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWCASTLE, Calif. – John Rudometkin, the University of Southern California star center who played in the NBA for New York and San Francisco, has died.

He was 75.

The school said Wednesday that Rudometkin died Tuesday in Newcastle of chronic lung disease, the lingering effect of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his chest that ended his NBA career.

Nicknamed “The Reckless Russian” by broadcaster Chick Hearn, the 6-foot-6 Rudometkin led the Trojans to

the 1961 Athletic Association of Western Universities title, their last outright conference crown.

Rudometkin left USC with career records for points with 1,484, scoring average at 18.8, and rebounds with 831, and is seventh now on the school’s scoring chart and fourth in rebounding. He was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and his No. 44 jersey was retired in 2010.

Rudometkin averaged 6.3 points and 3.1 assists in 131 regular-season games in four NBA seasons, three with the Knicks and one for the Warriors.

OPINION We now live in the world of the Rauner If there was any doubt before last week, there’s zero uncertainty now. Gov. Bruce Rauner won’t allow anyone else to interfere with his dominance of the Illinois Republican Party.

When the party was out of power for 12 years, several independent actors always tried to influence elections from behind the scenes, elbowing people out, putting people in.

One of those independent actors has been Ron Gidwitz, a moderate, wealthy business executive and onetime gubernatorial candidate with a network that includes lots of his rich friends. He ran the monied wing of the party.

Gidwitz used his and his friends’ money to boost candidates who were to his liking. He backed Sen. Kirk Dillard for governor in 2010, for instance, then switched his allegiance to Bruce Rauner four years later.

After months of public silence, Gidwitz reemerged last week. Sources said he has been bad-mouthing U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk behind the scenes for quite a while.

Kirk has had his problems of late, forced to apologize for – or at least back away from – some racially charged and just plain weird remarks.

Kirk also faces the fight of his political career next year, running statewide in a presidential election year when Democratic turnout very likely will be much stronger than during his off-year 2010 victory. So, it wasn’t exactly a surprise when Gidwitz told Greg Hinz at Crain’s Chicago Business last week that Kirk ought to let somebody else run.

“I do not believe he will be a U.S. senator in 2017 and, as top of the ticket, he could cause collateral damage [to other Republican candidates],” Gidwitz told Hinz about Kirk. “I call

If that reads like a prepared script, it’s because it was.

These weren’t off-the-cuff remarks.

Republican state legislators may grumble about Rauner in private (boy, do they ever), but they toe the Rauner line when it comes time to vote on the House and Senate floors.

Much of Rauner’s top staff came out of Mark Kirk’s Senate office and Kirk’s campaigns. Those high-level staffers still have a strong loyalty to their former boss, and Team Rauner is fully behind the incumbent senator.

So, not long after Greg Hinz called the Kirk campaign for comment about Gidwitz’s statement, Gidwitz himself got a call. And it wasn’t a very nice one, either.

“He sounded like a beaten man” after the governor’s forceful message was relayed to him, declared one GOP source later that evening. Soon after, Gidwitz called Hinz to fully retract his comments and endorse Kirk’s re-election.

I should say I’ve always liked Gidwitz and respected him. But the days of Gidwitz and others successfully acting independently are over.

Gidwitz’s complete backtrack was one of the more humiliating scenes I’ve witnessed in quite a while. Others most surely took notice.

We all live in Rauner World now. Get used to it.

Developing better leaders With Illinois stuck in the second month of a budget stalemate, it’s hard to see much hope for compromise.

Hey, if our state were a baseball team, we’d be mired somewhere near the bottom of the standings.

Indeed, many veteran “players” on the current “team” just haven’t performed, have they?

And when new talent arrives on the statewide scene, the veterans have shown minimal inclination to pull together with the newcomers.

In baseball, the most successful teams build winning traditions from the minor leagues on up. A good farm system teaches fundamentals and constantly feeds talented players to the major league club who are imbued with a strong philosophy of teamwork.

The result? Victories.

Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals have seen it work for decades. Fans of the Cubs

are seeing it work this year (finally).

Perhaps that’s a good analogy for the Edgar Fellows program going on this week at the University of Illinois’ Institute of Government and Public Affairs in Urbana-Champaign.

Forty emerging leaders are involved in the five-day leadership training program, where former Gov. Jim Edgar and IGPA experts inspire the young leaders to pursue bipartisan, inter-regional cooperation when dealing with the state’s major challenges.

The Class of 2015 reflects the state’s regional, political, racial and ethnic diversity.

It joins three previous classes in learning about competent, ethical and solution-oriented leadership.

Our area is lucky to have three people in this year’s group: David Welter of Morris, chairman of the Grundy County Board; Ragan Freitag of Wilmington, a member of

the Will County Board; and state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet.

There are 11 legislators in the group. In fact, since 2012, more than 40 lawmakers have been involved – more than 20 percent of the Legislature.

We believe that bodes well for the state’s future.

Why? Just as developing young athletes pays dividends on the baseball diamond, developing young leaders should pay dividends in Illinois government, the business world and civic engagement.

If those leaders perform as they’ve been taught, maybe our state will get the innovative, inclusive, forward-thinking leadership it needs to solve its many problems.

It’s worked for the Cardinals. It’s working for the Cubs. Someday, maybe Illinoisans won’t have to wait till next year for better leadership.

Luckily for both the Warriors and the Chiefs, local interest in football is strong enough to keep them going strong.

The Warriors recently held a skills camp – open to any child in Morris – that attracted 110 football players and 52 cheerleaders.

“That was a good camp for us,” said Troy Shannon, the junior varsity coach for the Warriors, as well as the vice president of the organization.

“We had about 15 to 18 players who have graduated from Morris and gone on to play college football come help us, and all of the high school players were there, too.

Learning never stops when you’re trying to catch fish INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers area that has multiple current streams flowing into it, so much the better.

Good current usually means a channel of some sort and water with depth to it.

Fish of all types, in lakes and rivers, prefer to have access to deeper water. Find the good current, and you will find those safe havens.

We rigged up our swimming jigs and attacked the shoreline. After a couple of hours, and several nice fish, I knew this trip was tougher than the previous year.

Narrowing down the pattern needed to happen. The bites we had came from areas that also held lots of rock. Time to look for that cover and fish it.

A railroad embankment and causeway offered everything we wanted. Rock, current, and good depth fell into place. We continued to catch fish, including some real quality ones, but we weren’t putting up numbers that I hoped for. Then evening approached.

We watched a local angler working about 50 yards from us boating fish on a regular basis. Every few casts another smallmouth danced his way.

My son and I both noticed how, where and what he was doing.

He was fishing incredibly slow and letting his bait

shuffle along the rocky bottom with the current. I could tell he didn’t want to impart any action to the lure himself, but let the river bounce it along.

Sounds easy, but maintaining a slow enough boat to let that happen without you pulling the lure along can be a challenge.

The next morning we took our observations and applied them. The first place we pulled up, Cody boated a solid 3-pound smallmouth on the first cast. His uncle followed suit a minute later. Cody repeated his first effort and immediately I swung a solid bronze back into the boat.

Wow. Narrowing down a pattern and applying it to new areas is the essence of fishing. If we hadn’t seen that other angler and how slow he was fishing, I’m not sure we would have had the success we did on the last morning.

You better believe that none of us will forget that little lesson. The next time though, the opposite may hold true. The fish might want that lure ripping through the water. Fishing changes, not only by the season and day, but sometimes by the minute.

The Warriors play in the River Valley League and the Chiefs are in the Illinois Val-

ley League, so they don’t play against each other.

“It’s all one common goal, anyway,” Shannon said.

“They are going to be on the same team in high school.

Warriors, Chiefs – it doesn’t matter. They both become Morris.”

“Most of our coaches are former Morris players, and they know what it takes to play at the high school level.”

As with many youth or-

ganizations, the behind-thescenes help is the backbone of the program.

“We have so many people who help us out,” Warriors president John Maddox said.

“We couldn’t give these kids what they need without a lot of help, and we are very appreciative of all the help we get.”

What a wonderful weekend I had. I spent four days with my youngest son and brother fishing the infamous pool 9 of the Mississippi River.

Another angler I ran across confirmed this fact when he said, “When God thought of frog fishing, he created pools 8, 9 and 10.”

It’s kind of ironic that we never boated a fish using a plastic frog this trip. We tried, but that bite just hadn’t fired up quite yet. As much as the three of us wanted it to happen, we realized to be successful we were going to need to adjust. Imagine that, Mother Nature throwing a curveball.

Mankind also can toss a potential wrench into the works.

Our first morning on the river we discovered the Corps of Engineers were dredging the pool. Some locals told us they dropped the level of the water to help them with their monumental task. “Pool 9 is dead right now,” a salty old marine dealer told me. “Best try somewhere else.”

As troublesome as that ominous statement might have been, I knew tough fishing in pool 9 still is better than just about anywhere else.

We rigged up and hoped for the best.

The particular area we like to attack is full of backwater channels choked with grassy islands, lily pads and a myriad of ways to get lost. Sounds exciting, I know. The common factor I always look for in a river situation is good current with breaks. If I can find an

This week, I have been trying to clarify the confusion that responder can have after the opener bids one of a major and the next player interposes a takeout double. Then, a jump to two no-trump shows game-invitational values with four-card or longer support for partner’s major. With game-forcing strength, responder bids three no-trump. Here, though, responder is a passed hand, so cannot have a game-force unless he has distributional values in the form of a singleton or void, when he could make a splinter bid. I know, more confusion!

In this deal, North indicates a maximum pass with four or more spades, and South bids game. (Yes, South might have opened one no-trump. Then North might have raised to three notrump, which would not have worked well; or he would have used Stayman and reached four spades.)

West cashes two top hearts, then shifts to the club jack. Declarer wins with dummy’s ace and runs the spade jack. West takes the trick and leads another club. How should South continue?

It looks obvious to take the diamond finesse, but West, who could not open the bidding, has already shown up with 11 high-card points. East must have the diamond queen. Declarer should draw trumps, cash his diamond ace, and play a diamond to dummy’s king. Keep counting those high-card points.
