Agnita (Papach) Lafferty.

She was raised and educated in Coal City and held past memberships at Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City and St. Lawrence in South Wilmington. Kay always enjoyed having the kids in her home, and will fondly be remembered as the “Candy Lady”. She took pleasure in gardening, making doilies and wind chimes, and was especially fond of her geraniums. Kay was a loving soul who loved everyone and made efforts to keep those special to her always in her prayers.

Minooka stabbing suspect indicted

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The man charged with stabbing his co-worker at a Minooka warehouse last month was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury for attempted murder.

Marshall Brown, 42, of Joliet, was indicted for attempted first-degree m u r d e r , a Marshall Class X felony, Brown and aggravated battery with a weapon, a Class 3 felony, according to a news release from Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

by Chicago police on charges related to the July 11 incident,

where he is accused of stabbing another employee at the World Class Distribution Inc. warehouse in Minooka.

At about 4:15 p.m. July 11, Brown and a 31-year-old Country Club Hills man were working inside a freezer unit at World Class Distribution, 1510 Cargo Court, when they began arguing, Minooka Chief Justin Meyer said in a previous interview. World Class Distribution ships products for Trader Joe’s grocery stores.

“There was a disagreement between the two individuals and Brown allegedly stabbed his co-worker and fled the scene in a vehicle,” Meyer said then.

The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet after being stabbed multiple times and was cooperating with police on the investigation.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The body of a woman was found Wednesday behind the Grundy County Farm Bureau building north of Morris by a group of children playing the part of crime scene investigators.

The victim, a mannequin, appeared to have been shot and the body hidden in the plants behind the building.

That was the scene for this year’s Murder Mystery Camp, an annual event held by the University of Illinois Extension Youth Development Educator John Davis and Grundy County Coroner John Callahan, which teaches kids the process of crime investigations.

“TV has a lot of hype,” Callahan said. “Today you need to pay attention because you might be quizzed later on things you’ve seen.”

Seeing things was the theme this year as Callahan and chief deputy coroner Christina Hintze-Symoniak showed the 42 children items to pay attention to at a crime scene, including location of the body, what a person is wearing, and whether there is blood or other clues on the body or near it.

They showed the children how to cast a boot print and what they would take pictures of at the scene prior to moving the person.

“I like mysteries, and I’m in 4-H so I heard about the camp,” 9-year-old Sy Salinas of Mazon said. “Just looking at the evidence, it could have been a car accident, and they tried to help themselves by wrapping up their own foot before dying.”

Salinas may have been just throwing out false leads though, especially when he told Callahan that if someone was

the murderer they would know a lot of details about the body.

None of the participants caught on, including Salinas, who turned out to be one of the murderers of the victim. The victim is a mannequin that has been used for the past several summers, always suffering a different death.

Fourteen-year-old Naya Green of Diamond said she

likes the science behind the investigations.

“I watch TV shows and think it’s kinda cool,” she said. “But I’ve learned they don’t do things as quickly as it shows on TV.” Callahan told the kids how samples are obtained and sent out to other labs for testing that his office doesn’t have the capability of doing, and how it often takes weeks to get results back.

He said a lot of time they rely on talking to witnesses, but the problem with witnesses is no two witnesses perceive things the same.

Hintze-Symoniak said the kids learn the job is more about what you see, and that you should pay attention to everything.

“It’s fun to teach the kids,” Callahan said. “It gets us away from the seriousness of what we do and allows us to share our thoughts and expertise with the younger generation. I always wonder what the conversations are like at the dinner table after this camp.”

Construction approved on Morris sidewalks, bridge

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – By next fall, a semi-continuous path of sidewalks will link Gore Road to downtown Morris, something Mayor Richard Kopczick is excited about.

This will be possible after Lisbon Road bridge is reconstructed next year, with one of the major improvements being

the addition of a sidewalk along the east side of the bridge.

“We’ve been looking forward to it because of the mere fact that we will now have sidewalk from Gore Road that – for all intents and purposes – will go all the way to Illinois Avenue,” Kopczick said Tuesday.

The eight-month project also will involve replacing the entire bridge structure, widening the opening to Interstate 80,

heightening the bridge from the drive surface and widening the driving lanes from 11 to 15 feet in width.

The Morris City Council approved Monday a letter of understanding with the Illinois Department of Transportation to move forward with bidding the project. IDOT is the regulating authority of the Lisbon Road bridge and is charged with paying for the entire project.

According to city engineer Guy Christensen, the bridge is the original structure that was built nearly half a century ago when I-80 was first constructed and it no longer meets federal and state standards pertaining to height above interstates.

“It’s a significantly old bridge,” Christensen said.

During the process of rebuilding, the state will have to remove several trees that line

Lisbon Road, but has promised to replace the trees.

“They are going to provide the city with trees to place wherever it wants – in parks, parkways or anywhere,” Christensen said. “So we’re losing a lot of trees on the overpass, but they’re giving us new trees to plant.”

4,000 Scouts coming to Lewis University for AirFest

The event, closed to the public but open to any Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venture Scout or adult leader, encourages Scouts to consider ca-

reers in science, technology, engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM. “We developed Scout AirFest for this very reason,” said Marc Ryan, scout executive for the Rainbow Council serving Will and Grundy counties. “The big idea is to expose Scouts to these fields at a fun, aviation-themed event.”

AirFest coordinator Ken McCafferty said the event is a culmination of two years

of working with Lewis University, the Joliet Regional Port District and the National Weather Service to establish what he called the largest gathering of Scouts in the area.

“There are over 70 programs, with model rockets, discovery flights and a Na-

tional Weather Service tour,” McCafferty said.

Other STEM-related activities include an astronomy quest, hot air balloons, a cockpit tour of a Boeing 737, experimental aircraft demonstrations, a Mercury Space Capsule exhibit, amateur radio, table top robotics and

vintage airplane exhibits.

“The reason this is important is because kids often overlook the field of aviation for potential career opportunities,” McCafferty said.

“The goal of this event is to show kids different avenues to follow to achieve their goals.”

Marijuana grower interested in possible Grundy County location

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A medical marijuana grower is interested in building a cultivation center in Morris, an investment that could bring as many as 40 jobs to the area.

Doug Pryor, vice president of the Grundy Economic Development Council, informed the Grundy County Tax Committee on Wednesday about very-preliminary conversations with an applicant interested in building cultivation center about two miles west of the Brisbin Road interchange near Gun Club Road.

The potential space would be about five to 10 acres in size and would be located within the city limits of Morris, Pryor said.

“Very few places have been willing to look at building a new building for it, but we’ve got an applicant out there who’s actually considering building a new building,” Pryor told the committee.

T h e M e d i c i n a l C a n n abis Pilot Program Act was passed earlier this year allowing marijuana to be used in treating an array of medical problems, including epilepsy, cancer, glaucoma and several other health conditions.

The pilot program is set to expire in 2018. In the meantime, lawmakers will evaluate its success and decide if the program should continue.

For this reason, Pryor said not many of the applicants are willing to invest in building a brand-new facility if, within four years, the program ends.

Still, one applicant has expressed interest in constructing a new center within Morris, something that surprised Pryor.

“The long story short is, there’s a possibility that an application might end up coming up in Grundy County after all. We didn’t think it was going to happen,” he said Wednesday.

Numerous approvals and ordinances would need to be

drafted and signed before any such marijuana greenhouse could be built, but Pryor said he wanted to make the county aware of this potential application.

The new facility would create anywhere from 30 to 40 jobs which would pay as much as $45,000, Pryor told the committee.

According to state law, only one cultivation permit will be granted per state police district, meaning the Grundy County site would be competing with Kendall and Will counties to house a cultivation center.

Pryor said that many of the potential growers are filing multiple applications in each allowable district, just in case.

“This is a real long shot,” Pryor said. “But for all of the circling that’s happened, we’ve actually had one.”

School District 73 filed its original lawsuit in 2012, alleging the village violated a 1986 tax increment financing agreement under which the school should have received more than $400,000 in 2012.

Since that time, the village has paid all but about $70,000 to the school – the amount the village disputes.

The village maintains that under a new law, the village is legally obligated as the TIF creator to account for how TIF money is spent, Belt said. It is required to make sure the

taxing bodies are spending the TIF funds properly and it appears the district is not.

A TIF district allows for municipalities to develop blighted areas by freezing equalized assessed values and using the monetary difference between the frozen EAV and current EAVs to fix up the areas.

The village argued the TIF money was only to be used for capital expenses, such as new construction. When the village discovered some of the money, about $70,000, was being used for salaries and benefits, it withheld the money, arguing it is obligated to monitor TIF funds and make sure they are spent in accordance with the law.

The school district continues to argue its agreement is a license agreement, differing from a traditional TIF agreement, and allows the district to use the funds however the

GARDNER – The village of Gardner has requested from the court more time to ask the state Supreme Court for an appeal on its latest decision on its case with Gardner-South Wilmington High School regarding TIF dollars.

On Monday Gardner Village Attorney Scott Belt filed a motion for extension of time to file a petition for leave to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.

“The [Gardner Village] Board feels this case is worthy of Supreme Court review,” Belt said. “Especially since it involves public tax dollars.”

Belt said he expects a decision on the time extension within the next 30 days. The village originally had until Wednesday to motion for the appeal. But due to the village only meeting twice a month and its recent hiring of additional attorney Michael Reagan, who is out of town ona previously scheduled trip, Gardner needs more time to prepare, according to the court documents.

“It’s just illogical. There is nothing to be gained by pursuing this,” school district Superintendent Michael Perrott said.

The continuation of this legal matter only results in wasting of taxpayer money – twice over – since the taxpayers have to pay for both the village and the school’s legal fees, Perrott said.

This village’s action follows last month’s Illinois Supreme Court denial to rehear the case with the high school. The denial followed the Third District Court’s July decision not to rehear the case and its April decision to uphold the Grundy County court’s previous decisions in favor of the school.

Three Rivers Festival opens in a special way

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Ferris wheel turned out to be a ride that Anastacio Salazar’s 4-year-old son did not quite like Wednesday as they visited the Channahon Three Rivers Festival.

Once the ride started going fast, Emiliano started to squirm and stretched out toward the door. His dad held him tightly and then waved at the attendant to stop the ride.

Anastacio’s request to stop the ride was not a problem because all of the families and caregivers in attendance at the carnival were accompanying people with special needs.

The people running the rides knew that children like Emiliano, who has Down syndrome, might need to experience the carnival at a different pace than other children.

The Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club, in conjunction with Fantasy Amusements, invited all these individuals and their caregivers for a half-day Wednesday at the Three Rivers Festival in advance of the public opening of the carnival.

The carnival opened Wednesday evening and will continue through Sunday at Central Park, which is at Route 6 and Bluff Road.

These children, their parents and caregivers swam at the Tomahawk Aquatic Center, ate, and attended the carnival – all free of charge. Food was donated by John Carnagio’s McDonald’s in Channahon and Minooka and TCBY of Shorewood. Volunteers also came from the Rotary Clubs of Joliet and Morris.

For father, Anastacio, there was another purpose in attending the event – he and his wife could visit with other parents of special needs children. He said no one else in his family has a child with Down syndrome.

“It’s a chance for us to familiarize ourselves with other parents. We ask people [we see here] with children with Downs, ‘How do you do this?

How do you handle things?’ ” So the event also became a chance to relax in the company of others who understand.

Ride Superintendent Rick Stanley from Fantasy Amusements, the carnival company, said the entire park for the morning was geared to the needs of people with special needs who might not like too much commotion or too much noise.

He said they don’t even open the Freakout or Supershot, rides that swing violently or drop riders too suddenly.

“It’s been four years since we moved in and we’ve been busy with other facets. It’s just time to start looking at this because the building really needs it,” Kopczick said.

Nine Grundy, Kendall county students awarded scholarships

YORKVILLE – The Kendall-Grundy Community Action Board recently awarded scholarships to nine area students.

Janet Goehst and Sharon Schultz, members of Kendall-Grundy Community Action Board, awarded the scholarships at its annual dinner at Lakeview Grille restaurant in Yorkville. The scholarships are made possible by funding from Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, according to a news release.

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Noon Rotary along with Interstate 80 AMBUCS presented a therapeutic bike to a special needs child July 27.

Ally is a 6-year-old girl from Ottawa diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, according to a news release from the Rotary club. CP is characterized by abnormal muscle tone, reflexes or motor development and coordination.

The Ottawa Noon Rotary was presented with an opportunity by I-80 AMBUCS to purchase a therapeutic bike for a child in Ottawa. Ally was selected to be

the recipient of one of these therapeutic bikes to further her therapy while having fun riding with her friends and family.

Ally’s parents, Nick and Lisa, promised to pay it forward by offering the bike back to I-80 once Ally outgrows it so it can be reused by another child.

I-80 AMBUCS builds bikes in Seneca and services Grundy, LaSalle, Putnam and Bureau counties in Illinois along the I-80 corridor. These bikes are all purchased with donations from the community and they currently have five bikes in Ottawa that are awaiting funding.

Too many Americans are facing debt collectors Americans’ apparent indifference to debt appears, at last, to be waning.

Data show that credit card balances are at their lowest level in a decade, a good sign that we either have more money at the end of the month or that we are beginning to realize that paying 20 percent interest on yesterday’s purchase isn’t great financial planning.

But the problem with debt is far from over, as a disturbing new study from the Urban Institute shows. More than 35 percent of Americans have been reported to credit agencies for unpaid debts, according to the institute.

Certainly some of those involve debts that are in dispute. But most are bills that Americans can’t or won’t pay.

The problem is particularly acute in the south and west, as you might expect. Credit is no less available in poorer areas of the country, but it comes with higher interest rates and more penalizing terms.

Of Dallas residents, 44 percent are receiving collection agency calls and visits. Imagine that. Almost half the people walking down the street are leaving themselves vulnerable to nasty letters in the mail or unwelcome phone calls.

The problem is a serious one. Being reported to a collection agency can have negative consequences on more than a person’s credit score. It can affect whether someone gets a job or qualifies for housing or student loans.

This phenomenon obviously most affects the poor and the least educated. And as an Associated Press article about the report noted, it isn’t necessarily the level of debt that an individual carries that translates to being under a collection agency’s watch.

In San Jose, California, for instance, the average person has almost $100,000 in debt, mostly from a mortgage.

Yet few people in San Jose are being reported to collection agencies. In contrast, in the Texas border city of McAllen, the average person carries just $23,546 in debt.

But more than half of people are facing collection agency queries.

Many of these debts are tied to medical bills. Older people and even younger people in poor health find themselves with crippling hospital bills that they simply can’t keep up with. It’s probably no surprise that McAllen, a center of collection activity, is also among the most expensive health care markets in the country, according to a report in The New Yorker.

There are no clear answers to this debt problem. We can hope that the fact that people are managing their consumer credit better is a positive sign that collection activities will decline over time as well. That depends, of course, on a strong economy and an improved job market with better wages for poorer Americans. And that’s far from guaranteed.

Meanwhile, the message of the debt collector is simple: Pay up now.

That they still could elect a Congress with the powers of the purse, which could, at the very least, have provided funds to states for the National Guard to stop the Invasion of 2014-24 (taught by government schools as the ‘Gran Liberacion’)? And they did ... nothing?”

“That’s right,” she will croak.

“They did nothing.”

“Why? Tell us again why they didn’t love liberty enough to defend” – their voices will drop to a whisper – “the Former Constitution and impeach the tyrant?”

The reason was the Republicans – that was the name of the Stupid Party before the Obamacrats instituted the single-payer health care and political system combined – would have had

“But they still had elections,” one of the youngsters blurted out, everyone’s heads shaking involuntarily in disbelief. “They still had the chance to make the case to the people according to the Former Constitution” – the youngster’s voice dropped off – “and they did nothing.”

“But they had laws against voter fraud back then.”

“How many times do I have to tell you, the Stupid Party never prosecuted voter fraud, no matter how rampant! The entire establishment even hushed up hard evidence that Obama committed identity fraud with forged documents to get elected in the first place.”

The youngsters’ eyes widened.

“We’ll get to that another day,” she said. “Meanwhile, there was no hiding Obama’s dictatorial usurpation of powers that didn’t belong to him, at

least when he was still under the Former Constitution.” She, too, muted her croak from habit.

“He changed legislation, made up legislation, refused to enforce legislation, punished political opponents, hid everything.

Eventually, he just seized Capitol Hill for the NSA’s Monitoring Infinite project run by the Unaccompanied Minor Brigades.”

She continued. “But another reason Congress did nothing when it still could was because practically every important conservative declared it was ‘premature’ to follow the Former Constitution and impeach the tyrant. No public support for impeachment, they said. What we lacked though, was a political leader to make the impeachment case and win that public support – or go down trying.”

“The Founding Fathers wouldn’t have thought it was premature,” one of the youngsters said. “They would already have initiated impeachment proceedings.”

Tears of pride came to the granny’s eyes, but fear sounded in her voice. “Never mention the Founding Fathers outside this cave!” she warned. “But you’re right.”

Knapp to continue career at Eastern Illinois Redskins alum won 3 straight high jump state titles

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – From an uncertain start to her track and field career, 2014 was a historic spring for Morris’ Haleigh Knapp. The senior high jumper became just the second athlete in school history to win three state titles in an event (Adrianne Leschewski, 19982000 in the shot put) and fifth statewide to win the state title in the high jump event three times. Knapp cleared 5-foot-8 to win the title by an inch over Bloomington’s Molly McGraw this past spring.

“This year felt the most exciting because the competition was so good,” Knapp said.

“I knew that I had to do what I had to do to win, but I was so nervous and I had absolutely no clue about what the outcome would be. At first, I was really nervous, and I kind of let that take over, but I pulled through and did it. I really couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

And, after having such success at the Eastern Illinois University complex over the years, Knapp decided to make it her home for the next four, accepting a scholarship to compete for the Panthers in college.

“That’s a funny story,” Knapp said about moving on to EIU. “When I first started looking at colleges, I remember saying that the very last place I wanted to go was Eastern. I visited a few bigger schools, and my dad finally talked me into taking one of my official visits to Eastern.

“Once I got there, I got along with the coaches really well and it just felt homey to me, like a place I would fit into. Some of those bigger schools were just so big they were overwhelming, and some of the small schools I looked

It’s not all spread out like a lot of other campuses are.”

When Knapp began her track and field career at Shabbona Middle School in seventh grade, she had no idea that high jump would be her event. Or even which event at all would be.

“The first day of track practice, me and some friends were just moving around from event to event, trying them all out,” she said. “The high jump just ended up being the best fit for me. But in no way when I was done at Shabbona and walked into the high school did I think I would leave high school with three state championships.”

Some of those titles can be attributed to the work Knapp had some with Jump High, an athletic club dedicated to high jumpers and pole vaulters headed by coach Bob Cervenka, who has coached five IHSA state champions, 102 state qualifiers and 57 state finalists.

“After my freshman year, I started going to Jump High,” Knapp said. “Coach Cervenka saw me at the state meet there and thought I could do

something special, so I started training with him. It’s what I did over the summers when school was out and we would go to AAU meets and stuff like that. It turned into a yearround thing.”

Except for this summer, which has seen Knapp traveling to such places as San Diego and Seattle on vacation before heading to Charleston in a few weeks for her life’s next chapter.

“I decided to take the summer off from meets,” Knapp said. “I am still sticking with my workouts, but just not jumping in meets. I wanted to have some time.

“I don’t know what to expect at Eastern, but I am excited. I am not going in there with a bunch of goals because I just want to get into the groove of things and see what happens. It’s all going to be so new. I am pretty excited about seeing what weight training is going to do for me.

“Also, I am not sure what I am going to major in yet, but everything I have thought about, Eastern has. I am going to take a bunch of different classes and see what stands out for me.”

Kind of like that first day at track practice.

The success of local pitching prospects in the professional ranks continues.

In his major-league debut Saturday, Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz went twothirds of an inning in relief without allowing a run. He struck out a batter, walked one and gave up a hit in the Astros’ 8-2 win over Toronto.

His strikeout came against American League All-Star Jose Bautista.

Not to be outdone, fellow Minooka grad Tony Bucciferro celebrated his promotion to Double-A Birmingham in the White Sox organization by notching a win in his first start. He allowed nine hits and no walks while striking out two in 6 1⁄ 3 innings as the Barons beat Chattanooga, 6-4.

Morris’ Zach Petrick was roughed up a bit in his latest start Monday for the Triple-A (Cardinals) Memphis Redbirds at Round Rock, Texas.

He allowed three earned runs on six hits in three innings in a no-decision. He struck out three and walked one. For the season, Petrick is 8-5 with a 3.99 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A.

Williams returns with ‘a lot to prove’

By MATTHEW PARAS mparas@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS – By now, the rehabilitation process has become boring to D.J. Williams.

That’s how the 11-year veteran linebacker described his latest stint trying to rehab a ruptured left pectoral muscle that ended his season after once six games. Williams, 32, has dealt with a handful of injuries throughout his career, having missed games because ofinjury in three separate seasons.

Even in his first year as a Bear, Williams, who spent nine seasons with the Denver Broncos, dealt with a nagging calf injury throughout July and August last year. In addition to that, he caught bronchitis in Week 5 against the Saints before ultimately rupturing his pectoral muscle toward the end of the third quarter against the Giants in Week 6.

“I know I have a lot to prove to a lot of people, especially climbing up in age at 32,” Williams said. “But I’m in the greatest shape I’ve been in a long time.”

Williams said being in great shape involved returning to his rookie weight, where he weighed 250 pounds out of the University of Miami.

Williams also will play at middle linebacker, a position Williams was brought in for last season and again when he re-signed to a one-year deal.

“I don’t want to say our defense is simple, but it highlights what I do pretty well,” Williams said. “It allows me to run sideline to sideline and play defense inside out.

We play Cover 2 a lot where guys are breaking and making plays.”

Williams enjoyed success in his limited time in 2013. He had two sacks, which was still the second most for the Bears’ linebackers despite missing 10 games.

However, not only is Williams out to redeem himself, but he also added the defense is out to make up for the disastrous year it had last season.

The defense ranked 30th in total yards allowed and dead last in rushing yards.

Williams said the team is eager to get out and start tackling opponents. The Bears’ first preseason game is Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field.

“Playing one of the opponents that I say personally embarrassed last season, we’re eager to see how far we’ve come

and still see what we have to do,” Williams said. “I want to shut them out. That’s how you approach every game, whether its preseason, regular season or practice.

“I just want to see everybody beat their guy and get to the ball, be energetic and follow the plan,” he said.

Williams also has to prove himself to his coaches. Bears coach Marc Trestman has stressed that competition has been the theme of training camp and Williams is in one that could be considered the closest.

When the preseason depth chart was released, Williams and second-year linebacker Jon Bostic were listed as co-starters for the middle linebacker spot. In camp, Bostic has been the starting nickel linebacker, with Williams taking the first-team reps with the base defense.

“It kind of reminds me of me and (former All-Pro Broncos linebacker) Al Wilson when I first came in the league,” Williams said. “It’s a competition, and I want to play as many reps as possible and know that he does as well.”

‘Deepsea Challenge 3D’: Cameron goes back to abyss

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post I’m not sure whether the target audience for James Cameron’s “Deepsea Challenge 3D” is aficionados of undersea adventure or aficionados of James Cameron. The movie, which documents the filmmaker’s 2012 expedition – in his own personal submarine – to the deepest point in all of Earth’s oceans, features less 3-D footage of sea cucumbers and exotic octopi than of Cameron’s nose. It’s a movie about exploring the vast, “dark continent” of the ocean’s deepest places (to quote Cameron, who produced and narrates the film) that ends up feeling claustrophobic. Much of it was shot inside a metal sphere the size of a fitness ball.

That’s because that is where Cameron is for much of the movie. He paid for the submersible, christened the Deepsea Challenger, so of course he gets to ride it to the bottom of the Pacific’s Mariana Trench. He also gets to take all the risk.

At nearly 36,000 feet below sea level, the trench is the deepest known point on the planet, and it hadn’t been visited by a manned vehicle since 1960, when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste to the spot

known as Challenger Deep. The trip is very dangerous, but, admittedly, also pretty exciting.

The “Titanic” director is well known for his underwater exploits, both on screen and off, having visited (and documented) the site of the Titanic more than 30 times and having made the deep-sea thriller “The Abyss” in 1989. Along with footage of those projects, the movie features a dramatized prologue showing a young version of the filmmaker playing, as a boy, in a cardboard box that he imagines to be a submarine.

Despite the personal nature of those scenes, the movie makes it clear that Cameron’s interest in financing a voyage to the bottom of the sea is more than egotism. Scientific advancement is the true goal, in the form of knowledge about how tsunamis are formed and in the discovery of new species of deep-sea life forms.

Yet the film pays scant attention to this stated goal, relegating the discoveries achieved by Cameron’s mission to a brief on-screen title at the very end of the film. Even a scene in which Cameron is shown collecting sediment and rock samples seems perfunctory, as though the work is secondary to how cool it is to be floating around a few miles underwater, manipulating a couple of 3-D cameras on

robotic arms with joysticks.

Speaking of which, those robotic arms give out at one point, having sprung leaks in their hydraulic conduits. Why did this happen? And why was it not anticipated? And what is that scary cracking sound that we hear during one of Cameron’s early practice dives, that sounds like the filmmaker, to use his own words, is about to get “chummed into a meatcloud in about two microseconds” by an implosion of the hull?

The movie doesn’t tell us. It also isn’t clear whether the deaths of the film’s co-director, Andrew Wight, and cameraman Michael deGruy, who were killed in a 2012 helicopter crash, were directly related to the filmmaking or incidental.

Cameron seems certain, however, that Wight and deGruy “would have wanted” him to continue.

Maybe they would have. What is certain is that, even after that tragedy, Cameron has a movie – and a message – to deliver: His heart, if nothing else, will go on.

• “Deepsea Challenge 3D” received two out of four stars. The film is rated PG, containing some crude language and brief disaster images. It runs 90 minutes.

Reduce blood-pressure medication though lifestyle changes

Dear Doctor K: Is it possible to get off blood pressure-lowering medication through diet and exercise?

Dear Reader: Yes, it is. I’ve seen many patients commit to lifestyle changes and get off blood-pressure medicines entirely. More often, I’ve seen that a commitment to a healthier lifestyle allows people to greatly reduce how much medication they take, even though they still need some medicines to control their blood pressure.

While many people, myself included, would like to not have to take medicines at all, being able to reduce the dose is a big deal. Many of the side effects of medicines are reduced or eliminated by reducing the dose.

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce high blood pressure. Still, it’s important to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program. If you are taking certain blood pressure medications, you may have to take extra precautions when you exercise. For example, thiazide diuretics slightly lower blood volume, so you may be more prone to dehydration with exercise.

Aerobic exercise, which boosts your heart rate and breathing, is best for lowering blood pressure.

Aim to do 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity activity on

Some resistance training is fine, but don’t strain. Do more repetitions at lighter weights to prevent temporary blood pressure spikes.

Many of my patients have started exercise programs to lose weight. But if they didn’t lose weight, they stopped the exercise.

They thought the only value in exercise was losing weight. They didn’t realize that exercise produces enormous health benefits -- with or without weight loss.

Regular exercise lowers a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke, diabetes and many common types of cancer.

Good nutrition can also help lower blood pressure. A blood pressure-friendly diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; several servings daily of low-fat dairy products; some fish, poultry, dried beans, nuts and seeds; and minimal red meat, sweets and sugary bever-

ages. Limit your salt intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table listing lower-sodium alternatives in common food categories.)

You should also aim to: • Attain and maintain a healthy weight. Exercise alone can help drop your blood pressure, and so can weight loss alone, by reducing your calories. But the combination of regular exercise and weight loss is more powerful than either alone.

• Limit alcohol. No more than one drink a day for a woman and no more than two drinks a day for a man.

• Stress less. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga can help relieve stress.

Lifestyle changes can have a powerful beneficial effect in lowering your blood pressure and the risk of diseases worsened by high blood pressure – particularly heart disease and stroke. This is not sanctimonious preaching: It’s solid science.

At the bridge table, though, sometimes you must decide between setting your sights high or low. How does that apply to this deal? South is in three no-trump and West leads a fourth-highest spade six. What happens after that?

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade (given the first trick), three hearts, two diamonds and one club. He hopes that the club finesse is working. But even if it loses, West might not find the right defense.

South takes East’s spade jack with his king, leads a heart to dummy’s king, and runs the club 10. It loses, but West is now in a quandary. Who has the spade queen? East would have played the jack at trick one with either only the jack or the queen-jack. And South would have won with his king, whether or not he also had the queen.

If South still has the spade queen and another spade, West needs to shift to a diamond in the hope that his partner can win with the ace and return a spade through South. But if East has the spade queen, that suit can be run now.

Should West play his partner for a queen or an ace?

Do not be greedy; set your sights low. West should cash the spade ace. Perhaps South started with king-queen-doubleton. Here, though, East should throw (unblock) his queen under partner’s ace. By applying the Rule of Eleven at trick one (11 - 6 = 5), East should know that South started with only one spade higher than the six, the king he has already played.
