• Stephen Heizenroth, 24, of Dwight, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, both Class 2 felonies, and was placed on five years probation. Heizenroth must serve 180 days in jail and report for periodic drug testing upon release from incarceration. He also must pay court costs and restitution of more than $500 and a monthly probation service fee of $20.

• Michael Mison, 36, of

Diamond, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 200 grams of psilocybin, a Class 1 felony, and was placed on four years probation. Mison must pay more than $4,000 in fines, court costs and fees, report for periodic drug testing and serve 90 days in the county jail.

• Jacob Smith, 19, of Morris, pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, and was ordered to serve 180 days in jail. Smith was placed on probation for four years and must pay more than $1,000 in restitution, court costs and fees. He also was ordered to obtain a mental health evaluation and complete treatment. In addition, Smith was ordered to have

no contact with the victims during the period of probation.

• Gerald Studyvin, 25, of Diamond, pleaded guilty to the delivery of a controlled substance, a Class X felony, and was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Studyvin must pay more than $3,400 in court costs and fees.

• Ich Minh Tran, 27, of Fort Collins, Colo, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony, was sentenced to six days in the county jail and was placed on 30 months probation. Tran was ordered to pay more than $1,300 in fines, court costs and fees. He also must complete 30 hours of community service.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – On Tuesday night at Lions Park in Minooka, the community and its police force came together to help take a bite out of crime.

The summer event wasn’t able to take place last year, but this year it was back in full force, welcomed by residents of the village.

“This is something we’ve been doing, I’ve always done it with my daughter,” Candace Walston of Minooka said. “I missed it last year when they didn’t have it, so I was happy to see it back and I brought my son with now.”

Village President Pat Brennan said it’s a wonderful event that he is happy to see the police sponsor.

“The police do a wonderful job,” he said. “It gets the community involved with the police more,” he said. “It helps to get the kids in the community used to the police in a positive situation.”

Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said bringing the community and police together is exactly what the national event promotes.

“What I like about the event is it gives the residents the opportunity to work together with the police towards a safe community,” he said. “I’m thrilled with the number of people who came

His welcoming nature showed the kids of the community that police can be friendly, even police dogs.

The community was treated to the free event, which included a bouncy house, touch

Under the pavilion residents were offered free snacks including popcorn, sno-cones and hot dogs while listening to the free DJ. Austin Etheridge, his sister, Cheyenne and friend, Amber Arteese waited in line with funny props for their turn in the photo booth that sent residents home with a snapshot from the night to remind them the community can help stop crime when working together.

According to the National Night Out website, natw.org, “America’s Night Out Against Crime” was introduced in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Minooka residents were asked to join forces and lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police to celebrate the National Night Out campaign at Lion’s Park.

“It’s time for Minooka residents to band together and promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity,” community police officer Denis Tatgenhorst said, in a news release prior to the event.

Morris approves gas aggregation program

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris will save about 23 percent on its natural gas bill for the seven-month period starting in September.

The city has entered into a natural gas aggregation program offered by Hudson Energy. The aggregation will apply to the 11 city-owned facilities that use natural gas and is not a program open to all residents, Morris Mayor Richard Kop-

czick said Tuesday.

With the program, the cost of the city’s natural gas supply will be fixed at a lower-than-normal rate beginning in September of this year and ending next March.

The savings comes at no cost to the city as Hudson Energy does not require a fee for finding the city a less expensive natural gas supply.

“Up to this point, the city has done nothing and is in what is generally known as the default program. The default program

is the most-expensive program to be placed in,” Hudson Energy Regional Distributor Mike Barnett said during the more recent Finance & Administration Committee meeting.

The committee recommended the agreement with Hudson last week, and the full City Council approved entering into the agreement at its regular meeting Monday.

During the council meeting, Kopczick reminded members of the public that the program is commercial and only applies to

the city’s buildings, unlike the electrical aggregation program, which is residential and open to all Morris residents.

The natural gas program is, however, nearly identical in concept to the electrical aggregation program, Barnett said.

The city’s gas will continue to be distributed by Nicor, but where the actual supply of gas comes from will change, depending on which has the best price.

Hudson Energy will find the city the most inexpensive rate

they can and lock in that rate for seven months to avoid price fluctuations that come with changes in the economy and weather.

“We were able to take advantage of a lower pricing in the summertime, lock it in and be able to have that fixed rate throughout the winter,” Kopczick said.

Although residents won’t see the direct savings, the city will be saving taxpayer money by shrinking its monthly gas bills, Kopczick said.

MORRIS – Susan Mallory alleges a poorly-placed stop sign contributed to a car accident that claimed her daughter’s life.

Mallory, of Morris, filed a lawsuit last week against local authorities in charge of placing and maintaining the traffic signage on Nelson Road in Grundy County, where the accident occurred last summer that killed her daughter, Lauren Mallory Elder, 28.

Mallory claims the sign’s low visibility is what caused driver Joshua Layne, 36, of Morris to run through the stop sign July 13, 2013, when he was traveling east on Nelson.

After Layne failed to stop at the sign, he continued through the intersection and another car driving north on Lisbon

said Tuesday.

“It was very difficult to see, and we have reason to believe other drivers have missed it too,” Mueller continued.

Defendants named in the case are Grundy County, Grundy County Highway Department, Saratoga Township, Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem and Saratoga Road Commissioner Homer Ellis.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, who is representing all county defendants, said his office would not comment about the pending litigation.

Also named in the lawsuit is John E. Johnson, the driver of the vehicle that struck Layne and Elder. Although Johnson did not run any stop sign, Muller claims Johnson

Road collided with Layne’s vehicle.

Mallory’s daughter, Elder, was a passenger in Layne’s vehicle and was killed during the collision. Layne died almost a year later as a result of injuries from the collision. No charges have been filed in the case.

The plaintiff claims the stop sign was placed at the improper height, angle and distance from the road. She also alleges the sign was too small – in violation of the Illinois Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices – and it was placed on a wooden telephone pole which also displayed several advertisements above and below the traffic sign.

“We believe there is some negligence on the part of the other driver, that’s why he is also named as a defendant,” Mueller said.

As the special administrator for Elder’s estate, Mallory is asking for more than $50,000 in damages.

Layne, the driver of the vehicle Elder was in, died in June as a result of injuries received in a traffic accident, according to his obituary.

Mueller said there is a possibility Layne’s estate could be named in the case as well.

“I think he will probably be brought in as an additional defendant,” Mueller said.

MORRIS – Spontaneous combustion caused several hundred hay bales to catch fire Tuesday morning, destroying 200 bales by the time flames were extinguished.

Crews from Morris, Coal City, Lisbon, Gardner, Channahon, Minooka, Marseilles and Mazon battled the hay-bale fire for more than four hours Tuesday.

It was called in shortly before 11 a.m., and when the flames were finally out in the afternoon hours, Chief Tracey Steffes of the Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District said the cause was spontaneous combustion of the hay.

The fire was on a Lund Road farm belonging to local farmers Don and Vickie Lowery.

“They put a lot of time and money into that hay. They need it to get through the winter and feed their animals,” Steffes said.

“It gets very expensive to feed [cattle], so it’s a big thing for us to save the hay so this farmer can continue to feed his cattle,” he said.

Fire crews used backhoe tractors to break open and move the smoldering hay bales away from the remaining bales to help contain the fire.

Morris High School hires new band director

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Members of the Morris Community High School Marching Band are pounding pavement in the high school parking lot this week as band camp is under way – with new band director Jeff Maraida at the helm.

Maraida was one of more than 60 applicants for the school’s position, Principal Kelly Hussey said.

“We were pleasantly surprised with the competitive nature and volume of the pool of applicants,” Hussey said.

“We brought in a team of people who included parents, school administrators and teachers who had the opportunity to read the top applicants and chose eight to interview.”

Hussey said Maraida’s name rose to the top.

Former band director Don Stinson announced July 18 he would resign from Morris Community High School, where he had been working for the past five years, to take another position.

Maraida is from Joliet and has worked the past two years at Hufford Junior High School with it’s five feeder schools, and spent the 10 years prior at Dirksen Junior High School in Joliet.

His resignation from his

previous contract was official Monday, and Maraida began work at MCHS directing its summer band camp the same day.

“I’m excited by the sense of pride and the love of music from the kids,” he said Tuesday. “I’m excited about the band program, but one of the things I love is the marching band.”

Maraida played the trombone in the Evergreen Park High School marching band before he worked on his undergrad degree at VanderCook School of Music. He has a master’s degree from Central Michigan University.

Maraida worked closely with former Morris Band Director Mike Fisk, who is now a Joliet Township High School director, while he was employed in Joliet and said he is familiar with the program at Morris.

“I’ve worked with Mike Fisk and talked to him to find out about the program, and I knew Don Stinson so I was able to talk to him about what the program and the students were like in Morris. It made me really excited to apply.”

Superintendent Pat Halloran said while Maraida started work Monday, he won’t be formally hired until Aug. 12 when the school board is set to approve his hiring.

Cook said he sees the area as prime real estate for such enterprises as hotels, restaurants and gas stations.

The Village Board also approved entering into an agreement with Rock Island Clean Line for tax abatements for the company at 85 percent of real property taxes for the life of the Joliet Arsenal Enterprise Zone, which expires in 2032.

the meeting, Cook explained the tax rebate is designed to help offset Grundy County’s machinery and equipment tax, which taxes machinery and equipment as real property.

Channahon also had success in obtaining road salt through a private vendor after not being able to procure enough through the state last month. Trustees approved a contract to purchase 750 tons of rock salt from Central Salt for $98.50 per ton. Last year, the village paid only $50 per ton for salt through the state.

The 750 tons will add to the 700 tons of salt already in storage. During last year’s icy winter, the village used 1,650 tons of salt on intersections and roads, which was an unusually

large amount.

Channahon also entered into a contract with a new electricity provider, as part of the Will Electric Aggregation Group. Residents and small businesses do not have to do anything to continue with the program that began three years ago, according to Durkin, and letters will be sent out soon explaining how individuals may opt out of aggregation.

The 17 municipalities of the aggregation group chose Homefield Energy as the new supplier and approved a contract at 6.99 cents per kilowatt hour for the first two years and 6.85 cents per kilowatt hour for the final year. ComEd is currently offering a rate of 7.42 cents.

MORRIS – The first day of school for Immaculate Conception School students will be Aug. 19. Classes begin at 7:55 a.m., and dismissal will be at 11 a.m.

Bus service to school will be available that day, but not for the 11 a.m. dismissal, according to a news release from the school.

Preschool and kindergarten students and their families are invited to visit the school Aug. 19. 3-year-old preschool families may visit between 8 and 9:30 a.m. 4-year-olds whose last name begin with A through M should visit between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and those with last names that begin with N through Z between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Detroit Free Press Lisa Howard first considered going gluten-free about five years ago.

The 37-year-old food writer and recipe developer from Berkley, Michigan., began dabbling with gluten-free baking because of the culinary challenges it presented.

“Gluten-free baking was a whole new ... interesting field of sort ... to get involved in and experiment with,” she said.

At the same time, Howard said, she began to experience gastro problems and stomach pain. Opting for a holistic approach, she put herself on an elimination diet to see whether food was the culprit. After forgoing and then reintroducing a series of common food allergens, Howard discovered gluten was affecting her health.

To make the rolls: Trim away any ragged edges from the collard leaves. Cut off the bottom 3 inches of the tough rib. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the leaves. Cook uncovered for 3 minutes, use tongs to promptly remove and let drain.

Spread a leaf out on a plate or cutting board and place a spoonful of tuna in the lower third of the leaf. Add radish slices, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, and a hearty dab of hummus. Fold bottom of leaf up onto the filling. Fold in each edge of the leaf and then roll up, turning it over and tucking in the sides until the leaf is a neat package. Place seam side down.

Repeat with remaining leaves.

Almond Sponge Cake with Chocolate Ganache Frosting

Moroccan Almond and Lamb Meatballs

Makes: About 50 / Preparation time: 30 minutes Total time: 45 minutes 1 pound ground lamb or ½ pound

Mix lamb with onion, garlic, orange, cumin, coriander, mint, salt and egg. Add enough almond flour to make a mixture that is dry enough to easily roll into 1 inch balls. If you overshoot on the dryness, add another egg and gradually add in more ground almonds until you hit the right consistency.

Sauté balls over medium heat for 4 minutes or until all “sides” are nicely browned, shaking the pan often to make sure the meatballs cook evenly. (When you think they’re done, remove one and cut it in half to see whether it’s cooked through.) If the meatballs stick to the pan while cooking, add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and carefully move them around to release them.

Serve on a large plate with a toothpick stuck into each meatball to make it easier for guests to serve themselves.

Cook’s note: Mint is also a main ingredient in Greek tzatziki, a yogurt based condiment flavored with mint, garlic, cucumbers, and often lemon juice. A dollop of plain whole-milk Greek yogurt would be a nice accompaniment to these meatballs, or make a quick version of tzatziki by combining yogurt with minced seedless cucumber, a clove of minced garlic, some chopped fresh mint, and a squeeze

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

For the topping: In a small bowl combine all the ingredients and set aside.

To make the cracker dough: In a large bowl, whisk the flours and sea salt together. Add the oil and

water and stir until you have a firm dough that isn’t too wet but also isn’t crumbly. You should be able to easily shape the dough into balls. If it’s too crumbly, trickle in more water to reach the right consistency, adding 1 tablespoon at a time.

Divide the dough into 4 small balls and work with one at a time.

Place a ball on the parchment-covered baking sheet and pat down to flatten. Sprinkle the dough with the seed topping. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough directly onto the parchment, adding more seeds if the dough starts sticking to the rolling pin. Gently flip the dough and repeat on the other side. When the disk is flattened to a rectangle that’s about ¼-inch thick, (it’ll take up about one-quarter of the baking sheet), slide it to one corner of the sheet and repeat the process with the other 3 balls of dough.

Press the quarters loosely together before baking.

Bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until the edges start to brown and the cracker is turning golden. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack. As soon as the crackers are cool enough to touch, break them up into smaller pieces.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees and thoroughly grease an 8 by-8-inch glass pan.

To make the cake: Place yolks, eggs, sucanat and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Whip on high for 4 full minutes with a hand mixer or a standing mixer. Quickly whip in the flours, baking powder and melted butter. Pour batter into the pan and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean and warm. Let cake cool before frosting.

To make the frosting: Place a large mixing bowl and the beaters in the freezer. Break up the chocolate and place in a small saucepan over the lowest heat setting. Melt slowly, stirring often. Remove from heat when the chocolate still has a few bumps and continue stirring to finish melting the chocolate. Set aside.

Pour cream into the chilled bowl and whip with the chilled beaters until you have fluffy but still smooth cream. Whip in the melted chocolate.

Frost the cooled cake and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to set the frosting. Leftover cake can be refrigerated for up to 4 days.

Cook’s note: Make powdered sucanat by running granular sucanat through a coffee/spice grinder until powdery. When you refrigerate the cake for more than a few hours, the ganache frosting will harden, so it’s best to let any leftover slices sit out at room temperature for an hour to soften before serving.

Elder abuse needs to stop Reports of abuse and neglect of the elderly have become more common, and the trend seems only likely to continue as members of the baby boom generation enter their golden years.

Statewide, elder abuse has risen steadily since 2007. Recent national studies of the elderly population have shown that about 7 percent to 10 percent reported experiencing some kind of abuse in the previous year, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse.

There are many forms of elder abuse, and it can be inflicted unintentionally as well as willfully. Abuse of elderly people can be physical or emotional. It can include financial exploitation, confinement of an elderly person or passive neglect of an older person’s needs by an inexperienced caregiver.

Victims of elder abuse are often women with an average age of 79, according to the Illinois Department on Aging website. That means the victim is probably a mother, and her abuser is likely an adult child, grandchild or other family member.

No matter how the abuse occurs, though, it must be stopped.

Experts said there are telltale signs of elder abuse, including changes in personality, missing regular appointments or changing schedule routines.

Victims of physical abuse might have welts and bruises, and those suffering financial exploitation might be receiving calls from bill collectors or simply having a lower standard of living.

Illinois operates a 24-hour hotline for people to report suspected abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of an older person at 866-800-1409.

Under Illinois’ Adult Protective Services Act, people who report suspected abuse in good faith and cooperate with authorities are immune from criminal or civil liability.

As the population continues to age, elder abuse will become more common, and increased public vigilance as well as training for people who work with the elderly will be needed to protect the nation’s elderly from those who would do them harm – willfully or otherwise.

State fair finances burden Illinois SPRINGFIELD – Twenty years ago the state implemented reforms designed to make the Illinois State Fair break even.

They failed. Big time.

The fair has been as sure-fired a loser as a kid playing a carnival game.

Well, maybe that’s not fair – every once in a while, a youngster actually wins.

Not so with the fair. It’s a carnie’s dream: a loser that won’t quit.

It and its Southern cousin, the DuQuoin State Fair, haven’t broke even once in the past two decades.

State Fair Manager Amy Bliefnick told me she doesn’t know if it’s possible for the State Fair to operate in the black.

Leave to a government bureaucrat to think losing money is always an option.

During the last 20 years,

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder the state fairs have lost $71.2 million.

And Illinois taxpayers have paid those deficits.

That’s money the state could have used to pay for something really important.

Instead it has been spent on a couple of festivals.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the fairs.

As a teenager, I showed cattle and hogs.

As parent, I’ve carried each of my three daughters on my shoulders through every nook and cranny of the State Fairgrounds.

Just last week, my 83-year-old father was regaling me with stories of how he and his best friend

from high school showed Duroc hogs at the State Fair back in 1950.

He tells me the fair’s hog barn looks just the same as 64 years ago. And, folks, it smells just the same, too.

But what really stinks are these deficits.

Hosting fairs and festivals is not a core government function.

The money would be much better spent educating our kids, keeping our roads safe, incarcerating the worst in our society or lowering taxes.

Instead we are spending it to bring Tilt-A-Whirls and deep-fried Snickers bars to Springfield.

Sorry, fairs are nice but not something in which government should be involved.

They have known that for quite some time in the

Lone Star State.

The State Fair of Texas is operated by a nonprofit corporation that manages to take in about $8 million more than it spends each year. That money gets spent on improving the Dallas city park where the fair is held.

So state fairs can break even. They can even turn a profit.

At a time when Illinois state government has the worst credit rating in the nation and is paying its bills months late; it’s time to take a serious look at making the fairs self-sufficient.

For Coal City’s Miller, it’s all about the community

roesterle@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There aren’t a lot of perfect matches when it comes to jobs and people. Usually, you have to take what the job entails and find the person that best fits, knowing that there will be good points and bad.

In the case of Coal City’s Ken Miller and the position of Joliet Slammers Director of Community Relations, however, the fit is about as seamless as it gets.

“I don’t think we could have found a better person to be in that position,” Slammers general manager Chris Franklin said. “Ken is just a great person to work with and he is one of the friendliest people I know.

He makes my job a lot easier.”

Miller, who taught and coached at Coal City High School full-time for 34 years and still coaches part-time with the football team, is in the twilight of his working career, and says he has the perfect gig.

“I started this job in December of 2010, and I really enjoy it,” Miller said. “I had retired from teaching in 2002, and one thing I told them when they offered me the job was no full-time. I worked full-time as a teacher and a coach for 34 years. The Slammers have been very good about keeping their word on that, and I will keep coming to work as long as I enjoy it.

“I have to say I have enjoyed it every day. It’s fun to be able to come out here to the ballpark

He might make it sound like it’s all fun and games, but there is a lot of work behind the scenes for Miller, who is instrumental in setting up community nights for Joliet and the surrounding towns at Silver Cross Field.

“We like to have those different community nights,” Miller said. “We would really like for every community around here to be able to showcase their community and get people out to the park. It’s a beautiful park and just a nice way to spend an evening.

“Each community offers a different opportunity and approach. Coal City chose to highlight its school district, while Morris chose Habitat for Humanity and the Housing Authority. They all have different angles to choose from. I will talk to the mayor about throwing out the first pitch, find out if they have an individual or organization that would like to sing the national anthem be-

Whatever problems the crew discovered, they had apparently fixed, as Nick qualified third fastest behind Tyler Trainor and Ryan Probst.

The three-car inversion for the feature put Baran on the pole alongside Probst on the front row. From the opening lap, Baran was able to jump out to a comfortable advantage over Probst with nothing but clean air and an empty track in front of him. On Lap 9, three-time STARS winner

this season, Austin Prock, beat Probst in a race to the bottom groove in turn one to take the second spot. From that point onward, the battle was on between Baran and Prock. For the next 24 laps, Prock was hounding Baran’s machine as both drivers weaved their way through lapped traffic with Prock waiting to pounce on any miniscule mistake that Baran might make.

With just 17 laps to go, Baran and Prock split the lapped car of Patrick Bruns, causing Prock to drift high and out of the groove which allowed Baran to briefly extend his

lead to six car lengths. That gap was short-lived as Prock quickly made up ground and began to challenge once again.

With just two laps to go, Prock made one more effort to get by Baran in turns one and two.

Baran left a one car width lane on the inside of turn one that Prock used to get up alongside him, but Baran was able to get a good run coming out of turn two and down the backstretch to ward off the challenge.

Prock’s car got sideways on the final lap betweens turns

one and two and was unable to recover in enough time to make another challenge for the lead. The rest of the top-ten included Probst, Kyle O’Gara, Trainor, Billy Hulbert, Nick Wagner, Brandon Wagner, Bruns and Kyle Kettmann.

The win was the first career STARS National Midget victory for the 27-year-old Plainfield native who was the 2013 STARS National Midget division rookie of the year. He

MORRIS – On the day Luke Baran was born, his father, Nick, made a promise to his son that he was going to bring home a trophy to put in his nursery. The victory did not happen, and in fact, the team’s future was initially thought to be in peril after Nick lost his second engine of the season. Just one week later, as Nick took over the reins of his brother, Tyler’s, yellow No. 11, Lady Luck finally shined on the BBOYZ Racing Team as Nick Baran was able to earn his first career D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget victory in a thrilling, 50-lap Illinois State Championship feature at Grundy County Speedway.

The trophy came a week later than Nick promised, but it was a delivery that has been a long time in the making.

The number of mechanical issues the BBOYZ Racing Team has encountered this year has tested the Baran brothers’ patience as well as their wallets. Along with multiple engine failures, both brothers’ cars have suffered from drivetrain issues all season. The first engine that let go on Nick was on June 14 at Grundy County. The second engine predicament that put them on the sideline was just last week when a belt broke while Nick was running in second place with just a little more than one lap to go in the feature. Nick went through this past week believing he would be playing the role of crew member, but less than 24 hours before the race, Nick received a lifeline from his brother. “Last night, Tyler called me and said, if I was interested, I could drive his car,� Nick said. “It blew me away. • Kingsley Flood, ‘Live at the Armory. George Hall’s guitar

work provides even more of a backbone here than on Kingsley Flood’s stellar studio albums: Unassumingly raucous, it simultaneously grounds this live collection of the band’s best songs – recorded in front of a small crowd at the Armory in Somerville, Massachusetts – and sends it soaring at all the right moments. His turn on “Devil’s Arms Full,” all winking swagger and rockabilly raunch, is a particular standout.

But as usual with these Boston-based folk-punk (or is it punk-folk?) rockers, “Live at the Armory” lives and dies by frontman Naseem Khuri’s lyrics and his breathless delivery of them. On rockers like “Strongman’ and “Sun Gonna Lemme Shine,” his compelling, wild-eyed rasp is impassioned, pointed and best of all, unique; there’s just no one else out there who sounds like this guy.

Factor in killer horns and Jenee Morgan’s beautiful harmonies and counterpoints, and you have the perfect entry into Kingsley Flood’s world if you’ve yet to experience it – or the perfect celebration of it if you have.

• Rockin’ Jason D. Williams, ‘Hillbillies and Holy Rollers.’ Wil-

liams isn’t exactly the force of nature here that he was on 2010’s “Killer Instincts,” but the (slightly) slower place actually suits the new album well, taking Williams’ boogie-woogie piano licks and laconic vocal drawl in cheeky new directions.

But it’s the covers that really make “Hillbillies” a keeper – Williams’ sly piano take on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” stands among that song’s most enjoyable versions. And his snappy “Sweet Georgia Brown” actually breathes new life into the old chestnut, effectively swiping it back from the Harlem Globetrotters. Short, punchy and irrepressible, “Hillbillies and Holy Rollers” is a halfhour or so well spent. (Info at rockinjasondwilliams.com) • Various Artists, ‘Bob Dylan in the ’80s, Volume One.’ There are pleasures to be found in Bob Dylan’s much-maligned ’80s output, and the contributors to “Bob Dylan in the ’80s” prove it on one of the

most consistent collections of Dylan covers to come along in a while.

The album only has one flat-out disaster: Reggie Watts’ truncated, jumbled up version on “Brownsville Girl,” easily Dylan’s masterpiece of that decade. But the rest of the tracks are all worthwhile: The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn was made to cover “Sweetheart Like You,” and Glen Hansard’s ragged “Pressing On,” from Dylan’s “Saved,” captures the simplicity and beauty of Bob’s “gospel” output.

Some of these songs were just so well constructed by Dylan that it would take a concerted effort to do them poorly – “Jokerman” and “Dark Eyes” come to mind, and the versions here, by Built to Spill and Dawn Landes with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, are suitably stunning.

More impressive, though, are the “lesser” tracks that the cover artists make their own: “When The Night Comes Falling From the

Sky,” a Springsteen knockoff from “Empire Burlesque,” becomes a jangly triumph in Lucius’ hands. And “Got My Mind Made Up,” a bluesy trifle from “Knocked Out Loaded,” translates much better in Langhorne Slim’s banjo-laden Americana version.

“Bob Dylan in the ’80s” shows that era to be a more than worthy inspiration to Bobophiles present and future. Not to mention deserving of space on your Bob mixtape (whatever that is).

(Info at 80sdylan.com) • Vinyl Spotlight: Bonnie Raitt, ‘Nick of Time.’ Capitol Records/ UMe has issued a vinyl re-release of Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick of Time” to commemorate its 25th anniversary, which is as good a reason as any to revisit the album – and I’m happy to report it holds up beautifully. Awash in gravelly blues and poignant ballads, it’s smooth without being slick, and her slide guitar work is, frankly, mesmerizing.

Raitt’s two original compositions are easily among the album’s best: The opening title track is one of the most thoughtful meditations on aging ever set to music.

And “The Road’s My Middle Name,” closes the album with a rollicking, worn-in vibe that feels well-earned.

In between those two tracks are an impressive array of blues rock efforts, several of which today feel like standards. The buoyant riff Raitt puts on John Hiatt’s “Thing Called Love” only amplifies the song’s infectious appeal, and on Bonnie Hayes’ winking “Love Letter,” Raitt’s crisp drawl generates the steam heat of as-yet-unrequited love.

Twenty-five years later, the remastered vinyl edition is a wonderful way to relive all these songs – rarely has an artist been better suited for vinyl’s warm tone. If you somehow missed it the first time around, there’s no (nick of) time like the present to discover Raitt’s stunning comeback. (Info at bonnieraitt.com)

ADVICE Expectant mom must consider baby’s future Dear Abby: Coming out of an

abusive relationship in the past, I made some poor decisions.

I moved away from home and into pornography and prostitution. I come from a small town, and it became a big deal when it hit the Internet. Everyone in my generation back home knew what I did.

Years later, I’m back home. I have a wonderful husband and we’re expecting our first child – a girl. My husband loves and accepts me in spite of my past, and my mother has become my best friend. I love my life here.

Nowhere else feels like home.

But I’m worried that my child’s life could be miserable here because of my past. She will go to school with the children of people who know my history.

No parent would want their child around me and – by extension – her. She may also learn the unsavory things I did.

I’m torn between moving away for her sake or staying. My parents are aging and have no one else to care for them. They

How long after that date is it safe to use them? – Wondering In New Jersey Dear Wondering: According to Eatbydate.com, when it comes to milk, the length of time it lasts beyond the expiration date on the carton depends on what kind of milk it is. Lactose-free and non-fat milk last another seven to 10 days.

Skim and reduced-fat milk, one week.

Whole milk should last five to seven days. Of course, for this to happen, the milk must be stored properly, at a temperature at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that eggs should be refrigerated at the time you buy them and as soon as possible upon your return home, and can be used up to three weeks after the sell-by date if they have been stored properly.

Choose right kind, right amount of fish during pregnancy Dear Doctor K: I recently found out that I’m pregnant. I’d like to continue eating fish, but I understand some fish contain mercury, which could be harmful to my baby. What fish should I avoid?

Dear Reader: Fish are a great source of lean protein, and many types are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help brain and nerve development and protect the heart. In fact, current dietary guidelines recommend that women who are pregnant eat 12 ounces of seafood a week.

But as you noted, some species of fish do contain worrisome amounts of methylmercury. This toxin is especially dangerous to developing brains. High-mercury fish you should avoid during pregnancy include swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish.

A recent study may add two more fish to that list. The study hints that salmon and tuna may also boost mercury levels.

The new study looked at what types of seafood Americans eat and how often, and how that affects mercury levels in the blood.

The vast majority of participants had blood levels of mercury in

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the safe zone. Not surprisingly, the more fish people ate, the higher the levels of mercury in their blood. Those who consumed swordfish, shark and other high-mercury fish were the most likely to have higher blood levels of mercury. But some study participants who reported that they ate only salmon or tuna also had high mercury levels.

My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Emily Oken has studied women’s fish consumption during pregnancy. She explains that it’s complicated to tease out the harmful effects of mercury. That’s because the primary source of mercury in our diets is fish. And fish have nutrients that are beneficial to the brain and the heart – the same organs that mercury may harm.

Low-mercury fish options include trout, herring, pollock, flounder and sole. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a

table listing additional low-mercury seafood choices.)

In this column I try to make things simple, but the reality is that things are rarely as simple as we would like. Eating fish is a good example. Like all foods, fish contain many different substances. Many of them are healthy, but some of them are unhealthy.

So, what do you do? As with so many things in life, the key is moderation. Continue to enjoy fish, just not too much. Since you’re pregnant, eat 12 ounces of fish a week. And choose the fish that contain relatively low levels of mercury. Stay away from high-mercury species.

Finally, remember that “moderation” also applies to advice. If you’ve already had a meal or two of high-mercury fish during your pregnancy, please don’t worry that you’ve injured your baby’s brain. A meal or two of high-mercury fish is not like taking poison.

Daughter should not feel guilty Dr. Wallace: I was born in December of 1997. Last weekend I was looking for my birth certificate in a box marked “important” papers, and while browsing through the box, I found my parents’ wedding certificate. It stated that they were married on July 14, 1997.

My mom always told me that they were married on July 14, 1996. My parents are now divorced, and I am living with my mom.

She is a wonderful parent and I love her very much. She is also my best friend. My parents are divorced and my father has left the region and we don’t know where he is and we don’t really care. He was a terrible husband and father. I’m thrilled that he is out of our lives.

Now that I have discovered that mom was pregnant when she married my father, I feel guilty because she probably wouldn’t have married this guy if she wasn’t going to have a baby. Should I talk to my mom about all this, or should I just “let sleeping dogs lie”? – Nameless, Moline Dear Nameless:

You had nothing to say about your parents’ marriage, and it appears that their divorce was inevitable.

You have no reason to feel guilty for anything concerning Mom and Dad. There is no good reason to mention to Mom that you are aware that she was pregnant when she married your father.

My mother always compared me unfavorably to my many cousins. I was either too fat or my grades were not good enough.

Now time has passed and I’m the vice president of a health care system. I have a master’s degree in business administration, and I earn a good salary. None of my cousins have my educational or professional status. That’s really not important.

Thanks to my mother, I still struggle with low self-esteem, a remnant of feeling like a failure when compared to my cousins. Is it possible that parents who use comparison as a motivational tool for their children are really trying to compensate for their own feelings of inadequacy when they were young? – Jo, Baltimore, Md. Dear Jo: Yes, it is possible. And it’s always good for parents and teens to hear from someone who had a negative experience and finished with a positive life. I’m sure many parents will reconsider their actions and motivate their children in a more positive way.

That is important for West in this deal. How should he plan the defense against three no-trump? West leads the heart four: three, jack, queen. South plays a club to dummy’s king, then runs the diamond jack. After winning with his queen, how should West continue?

South starts with only five top tricks: two hearts (given trick one) and three clubs. Obviously he will play on diamonds for more winners, with spades on the back burner if necessary.

Several years ago, during an interview, I was asked what is the one thing I teach my students that they never seem to get straight and I cannot understand why. This is what I answered. When playing third hand high on defense, you play the bottom of equally powerful cards.

In this deal, when East plays the heart jack at trick one, he denies holding the 10. So West, reading the cards, knows that South started with the heart ace, queen and 10.

This means that leading another heart cannot be right. West needs to get East on play for a heart lead through South.

Enter the second key rule: If you lead low from length, you guarantee at least one honor in that suit. Here, West should shift to the spade eight, high denying an honor. Then East should win with his ace and return the heart seven, resulting in South’s going down two.
